Went to celebrate Father’s Day 2025 at Laughing Sun for some BBQ and a beer. I’ve been looking for good BBQ in Bismarck, and Laughing Sun has been recommended to me quite a bit. The place itself is really cool — I love the big, open blues venue atmosphere. Axe throwing is a fun touch, and I appreciate that it’s sectioned off so it doesn’t distract if you’re not into it. The line to order moved quickly, and ordering was smooth with friendly service. I got the 3-meat BBQ plate with brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. For sides, I chose mac and cheese, beans, and kettle chips. My wife ordered a half order of the BBQ nachos and a root beer. I had the Space Probe Blue, a sour — which I really enjoyed. The ribs were great: served slightly above room temp, tender, and well-seasoned. My coworker noted that the chicken with wild rice soup was disappointing, with not much chicken, and the chicken that was present was small and obviously came from a can. These are important notes that I will come back to. The entree, meatball stroganoff, was fantastic. It was 5 stars. Very nice flavor, good amount of mushrooms, perfectly cooked noodles. The sauce was savory but not overly rich. It was herbaceous. The meatballs were nice and there was a good ratio of meatball to pasta. The variation in type of cut (long skinny onion, various shapes of mushroom) showed the touch of a chef that was obviously well trained. When we got the bill, I was shocked and appalled to see that I was charged $7 for my salad, and my coworker was charged $7 for the soup. When asked “soup or salad?” I assumed that it came with the entree, it was not posed to me as an additional item. I have never seen this done before and I was very frustrated. To make it worse the salad was honestly atrocious. I could have thrown together a nicer salad in my hotel room. This left a bad taste in my mouth right at the end of the meal, which is the mist important time to satisfy the customer. The walrus was about to get a rare 5 star from me. I was willing to overlook the plastic butter ramekin, and even willing to overlook the salad. The stroganoff was easily worth the twenty some dollar price tag. But being charged for something posed as something that came with the meal really rubbed me the wrong way. All in all, I will be returning to the walrus, it’s probably the best place I have been to eat in Bismarck. But I will not be getting the soup or salad. Maybe after a second, better experience I will increase my star rating.

I've been to New York and had mouth watering NY style before and they didn't have a sauce shortage on their fare. For the premium price we're paying, give us some sauce, please! Makes for a dry unsatisfactory experience. Wife and kids, not happy. Dad not happy. I hope food quality and customer service pick up or those rumors going around may yet come true. She didn’t get her mash potatoes and the salad wasn’t brought out until after we asked for to go box and told our waitress that we never got her salid they did take it off the bill which we did appreciate! We did notice that our waitress was on her phone and seemed a little pre occupied with that which we get that thing could be going on in her personal life! But if you cant take care of your one and only table due to it getting later in the evening maybe asked one of your fellow coworkers to give you a hand. Now I’m not going to say I won’t ever go back! I’ll give it a go again. They might have just had an off day.

Food was disappointing. For a starter we had the seafood dip, which was served with store bought mini breads (I swear it is those Stonehearth mini naans). The dip was good but not amazing. Our entree was the $99 (at time of writing) dry aged cowboy ribeye cooked rare and we had asparagus, mushrooms and mashed potatoes as a side. Here there was a mistake, we ordered the mushrooms as a side but the restaurant also offers the mushrooms as a topping to the steak and that was what the gave us instead, a minor error but a bit annoying. The sides were all bland, with no sauces and light seasonings, which was disappointing. However, the most disappointing part of the meal was the flagship ribeye I mentioned before. It was just fine, not good and not great. For half the price you could get a better ribeye from any chain steakhouse. The dry age didn’t impart enough flavor to make up for the light seasoning in the cooking and the house butter we got with it brought the whole thing up to an okay experience. There was also an acrid, bitter flavor on the edges of the steak, not sure if that was from how they did the sear or the dry age, but it detracted from the already mediocre dish. Drinks and wine selection were fine for the type of restaurant. Finally, the bathroom was a disaster. My wife told me the stall locks were hanging on by a thread, the toilet rocked like a rodeo, the sink water pressure was sad and she was grateful she wasn’t in a wheelchair as the stalls were not accessible.
