My wife and I recently tried to go to an Italian restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, which we’ve previously been to and liked very much, but found that it had permanently closed. We were meeting out of town friends for dinner, and since I didn’t know of any other good Italian restaurants in Puerto Vallarta I just did a google search, and thought that La Tosca looked like the best bet. And to say that we were NOT disappointed would be an understatement.
We met our friends at La Tosca in early October, and coincidentally found it to be located just across the street from the other restaurant we initially wanted to go to, in the very hip Versailles neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta. The ambience is quaint, warm and European, with both indoor and outdoor seating. We ate outside, but by the time dessert came it started pouring down rain, so we went inside for that. And then we had to stay in the restaurant for another forty five minutes waiting for the rain to let up, which only added to an overall very memorable dining experience.
I can’t recall which salad my wife and I shared, but I do know that we thought it was great. Before we went I had read someone else’s review on La Tosca, and that person claimed their eggplant parmigiana was the best they’ve ever had, which is probably the most singular thing that made me want to go there to begin with. But they didn’t have eggplant parmigiana the night we went, so for my entree I ordered the chicken parmigiana with a side of pasta in red sauce, and thought both were outstanding, really outstanding! My wife had spinach and cheese raviolis in a red sauce and she was raving about how good they were. Our friends, who I guess are a little more health conscious than us, both ordered the grilled salmon, and it looked incredibly delicious,
They only had Tiramisu or homemade chocolate gelato for dessert, and neither my wife nor I are big fans of either. But we tried the gelato and it was like eating a little slice of heaven! To be clear, we both do love gelato, but chocolate would not be our go to flavor. That being said, I’d keep ordering that homemade chocolate gelato at La Tosca every time we go, and I plan on returning many more times!
We did return to La Tosca with some other out of town friends who were visiting Puerto Vallarta in early November, and found it to be just as great as our first time there. The owner/ chef Gaetano, direct from Napoli Italy 🇮🇹 remembered us from our prior visit, and he brought out a variety of appetizers……mussels in the most amazing garlic and olive oil sauce imaginable, grilled eggplant, fried calamari, and a delectable salad of arugula, cherry tomatoes and burrata in a light, but incredibly flavorful vinaigrette dressing.
This time my wife ordered the special, which was the Tagliata (Rib Eye Steak) and gnocchi with fresh seafood. When the waiter was telling us about the specials I understood that the Tagliata and the gnocchi were two separate options, not all part of the same special. My wife isn’t a big fan of seafood and I don’t think she would have ordered that dish had she known that it was served with the steak, but she said she loved it. And she said the Tagliata was about the best one she’s ever had, and she definitely knows her steaks!
The eggplant parmigiana still wasn’t back on the menu, but Gaetano said he would make one for me, although it wouldn’t be exactly the same. So I had him do that, and got it with a wonderful side of pasta in red sauce. All I can say about the eggplant is that if it wasn’t “quite the same as the one on the menu,” it was still so good that I tend to believe the person who wrote the review claiming that the one on the menu was the best they’ve ever had! And now I can’t wait to return for that one!
We were all treated to a shot of lemoncello to cap off one of the all round best dining experiences imaginable! Thank you Gaetano and your wonderful, friendly staff! See you again soon!
