Been coming here since its opening night and today ( Friday ) at 8pm we thought we’d pop along. We hadn’t booked but we chanced it. We were the only customers, which is surprising as Bedford/Kempston doesn’t have many good Chinese restaurants and we did class this as our favourite. We tried to order a rose wine ( only one on the menu ) but they had none. They only had one rose on the menu. So somebody clearly can’t control their stock levels. So we settled on a white. It took 3 staff members to remove the cork from the bottle. The server seemed puzzled when we said we would like to try the wine, however it was a really nice white rioja. We ordered the food and as always it was lovely. Could not fault it. The biggest problem was the staff. There seemed to be no passion or engagement. None of the regular staff were there from previous visits and the atmosphere was not the same. It really felt it had been taken over and the staff had no training. Such a shame. To us good service is a very important part of the meal, as is the atmosphere. If you like good Chinese I’d recommend as our food as always was good but be prepared for some service issues, hence the low rating. Will give it ago again and hopefully give it a 5 star review it deserves.

Our chowmeins, are crammed with vegetables. The pancake rolls were nearly passable but only because we added sauce. The highlight was the prawn crackers. Never again for us. None of the flavourings were to our taste.

I don’t like writing a negative review, but I wouldn’t want another couple to get the same disappointing experience we had at this restaurant. It’s a nice restaurant room to eat in, and the soft furnishings mean it’s easy to maintain a conversation with your dinner companion(s). It was reasonably busy while we were there, maybe 70% of the tables in use - nice to see a restaurant busy mid-week! Positive: they have a menu showing the gluten free options, which can be used alongside the main menu when dining in. Sadly two things let our meal down. The quality of the food was poor. There was a disappointing lack of flavour compared to chinese restaurants within a reasonable travelling distance, and even some of Bedford’s better take aways. I realise there aren’t any other Chinese restaurants locally, but the Golden Cross could certainly do better. Service, after we’d finished our main course and drinks, the staff just ignored us for 45 mins, despite us trying to catch their attention. There were a table of six regulars next to us, who were receiving regular attention throughout the meal, including desserts, drink refills while our table was left. I’m not interested in becoming a regular if there’s a probation period of receiving poor food and service to go through! I hope this was either a non-typical experience of the Golden Cross, or that they make efforts to improve for other diners.

And I have never been made sick from this Chinese. Most restaurants won't even entertain and order that has gluten free on it so I'm not left with many options. I have had to shop around on the menu to find what's good, I don't think the way the package their noodles is the best but the fried rice and the chicken satay amongst other items are really nice and they are cooked fresh or else I would not be able to eat them. It always arrives at our house hot when I ring the restaurant directly. I have read reviews here about deliveroo and just eat and food arriving cold. I do believe that's to do with the apps, I have seen the noodles come out of the box on somebody else's picture and yes that does happen. But if you shop around on the menu and if you are gluten intolerant you may be able to eat this restaurant. They are not overly expensive so it's great on a night when I really cannot find the will to cook because there are so few places I can eat. I generally have to cook everything myself at home.

I ordered a takeaway for my family and travelled to the restaurant to collect. A lady brought it out to me and read out the order, before handing me the bag. The order she read out was correct and exactly what I had asked for. Unfortunately, when I got home, one of the dishes was wrong. We had ordered a portion of sweet and sour chicken, but were given sweet and sour pork. I telephoned to tell them and ask what could be done. The phone was answered by a lady, who was initially polite. I explained the situation and she told me I would have to return the portion in order to be given the correct one. I explained that I didn't live in Bedford, but in one of the surrounding villages, so that would be inconvenient as the rest of the food would go cold. I asked if the correct one could be delivered, but she refused. With no convenient solution for a replacement dish, I asked for a refund for the cost of the incorrect portion. However, she told me I would have to bring the portion back in order to get a refund! Again, I said that was not an option and queried why it had to be returned as it wasn't as if it could be served to another customer. She insisted I would have to return it. I explained that I don't go into the town centre very often and would be unlikely to be passing the restaurant any time soon, during its open hours, so it could be weeks! However, she still insisted that it should be returned! I've never heard anything as ridiculous! I asked again why the refund could not be made now, whilst I was on the phone. Surely it could be placed back onto the card I used to purchase it? She told me it couldn't and said that she needs the manager's approval. I asked her to get the manager and do just that. She said he wasn't there. I asked when he would be back and she said she didn't know! I asked her to explain why she needed approval when clearly, the restaurant was at fault. I said that surely the manager would understand and that there must be a policy in place for such a situation and that I also had consumer rights. She then told me that she needed the manager to put the PIN into the card machine in order to process a refund and that he was the only person who knew the PIN!!! Seriously??!! The conversation went back and forth, with me stating that the situation was unacceptable and her telling me she wouldn't refund and would only swap the food if I brought it in. When I asked what would happen if I was only able to return to the restaurant in a couple of weeks, when I didn't then want the correct portion, she said I would get a refund on my card!!!! I asked how would that be possible if the manager wasn't there and how could I guarantee that he would be there before I arrived? She told me that I should ring first before I arrived!! Her tone had been becoming more and more aggressive and she got very angry and by now, was shouting down the phone at me! I asked several times for her not to shout and get angry as it was completely unacceptable. Eventually, I realised that I wasn't going to get anywhere with this incredibly rude, unprofessional and unhelpful lady, so I had to agree but asked for the manager to call me at his earliest convenience, before I then hung up. Unbelievably terrible customer service, shocking behaviour and attitude and I don't believe for a second that she could not have refunded my card there and then, whilst on the telephone. I know it's not a huge amount, however, out of principle (and consumer law I would imagine), I would like the refund. The food is normally fresh, full of flavour, and always a treat we look forward to. Unfortunately, when the owners go away on holiday, the standard really drops. The replacement cooking leaves a lot to be desired – the rice and noodles are poor in texture and bad taste, the beef and chicken don’t seem to be cooked properly and taste dry and old, and the overall flavour is almost non-existent or unpleasant sometimes even tasting slightly off. It’s disappointing because when the owners are there, it’s one of the best takeaways in Bedford.
