It was late by the time we finished and we were both hungry and in need of lunch. A quick Google search showed that this place was still open though it was just before 3:00pm. Too many places stop serving lunch by 2:00pm. We dropped by and were welcomed. We opted for the 2 course lunch menu with a glass of excellent Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot (included). The prawns and steak tartare were excellent and we shared it. The steak was divine and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the home made béarnaise though the steak was so good that it wasn’t needed. My husband enjoyed his home made chimichurri sauce. We were too full to have dessert. We will definitely be back next time we visit Bendigo.

Sadly, our latest visit was deeply disappointing. The female manager’s service was unprofessional. We ordered two medium-rare steaks, but one was overcooked. While she did agree to replace it, she said “It’s also the lighting here, I can’t really see” and the steak’s thickness hence why it’s overcooked. When paying, we found we’d been charged for a different, more expensive dish—about $100 more—than what we ordered. The manager implied it was on our end that did not noticing the size of the steak, the name when they served, and only after discussion, we both agreed to meet in the half way, $60 discount was applied, but leaving us confused and uncomfortable. On the positive side, the male staff member (pictured in our second photo) was very professional and saved part of our experience. Although the meat quality is excellent, two negative encounters with the manager have put us off returning or recommending Woodhouse to friends.

The sign of a great restaurant is one that you don’t want to leave. The staff kinda feel like family by the end of your 3 hours of eating and you just wish they had a sofa for you to collapse on for that food coma we all fell into. Masons was simply wonderful. The revamped interior makes for a cozy atmosphere. The new menu has a wider range of delicious dishes and should keep every punter happy. Each plate we ordered was in small proportions, appealing and delicious. They say you eat with your eyes. The plates here were certainly eye appealing and delicious, they were delectable. We asked for a local chardonnay, but unfortunately, there wasn't a local chardonnay on the menu. We ordered one from Macedon, which did not disappoint. I found the green peppercorn sauce for the steak was absolutely fantastic. The peppercorn flavour is strong enough that you know it’s pepper sauce. I know a lot of places stuff it up. The salads in the dishes are very nice and fresh, unlike the soggy soft and disgusting one in the supermarket. Gluten free option for fisherman basket is also good. You know it’s hard to find gluten free fish and chips or seafood baskets etc., not to mention to find a good one.

The hotel was a short walk from our accommodation, so it was an easy choice. Luckily for us, it turned out to be an excellent choice as well! I noticed one table get their first meal and then when the person who got his meal was almost finished his meal the others came out.

We stayed 2 nights, the room was clean & warm, great bathroom, the staff were friendly, readily accessible and helpful. We loved the grandeur & sense of history. Yes areas of the building are showing their age. Food was great, I ended up sharing a three meats & sides platter with the wife. The Burnt ends were really good and same with the Lamb shoulder, the Brisket was okay but id try something else next visit. The sides were great as well being perfectly golden and cooked through. Portion sizing was enough for me and the wife and for $75 for the platter you can't go wrong. The Jalepeno poppers were good but two for $10 seemed a bit steep. The last time my family of four visited this venue it was operated by a different cafe which was really great. So, having seen the change to Whitby's, we were initially apprehensive, wondering if we'd get the same great food and service. Well, we got a lot more than that. Once I’d had a few mouthfuls I thought I’d try again, after 10 minutes, and stopping to eat my meal to get some eye contact, the girl who originally served me, stayed behind the counter and asked me did I need something, I replied and said “I’ve been trying to get someones attention for quite some time and have been unable”, I said, “I actually ordered a Penne pollo de pesto, my meal is wrong, but I’m hungry and tried to eat it and I was wondering if I could have a garlic bread please”. Mexican Kitchen used to be phenomenally tasty in the old days of the 1980's. Great chef called Jake. When he left, it went down. All the food had not much taste, watery, flavourless. Mexican food is abundant with rich flavours. Get proper Mexican food trained people in and it seems like you are using cheap and/or improper ingredients and techniques. Never ever ever ever ever going there again. Another friend of mine said they are NEVER getting food from there again because it is "so horrible". They have been getting takeaway from the once a month for years but said the past few months have been bad and now they have seen the pattern of yuck food for lots of money and not getting it anymore.
