My heart sank, but it was too late to do anything about it, as we were heading directly to my folk’s place for dinner. As we arrived, I grabbed the handle of the cake box, lifted it carefully from the back seat, and watched in horror as the handle ripped away and the box landed upside down on the pavement at my feet. Kirsten and I just looked at each other…this can’t be happening. I carried the birthday cake corpse into Mom n’ Dad’s, and bless my mom’s heart, she just laughed and made jokes about it being a deconstructed Black Forest cake, or that it was actually an upside down cake. At this point it was down to taste, and at least that wasn’t a total disappointment. The cake itself was moist and flavourful, and what little there was of the cherry/chocolate topping was yummy. What should have been chantilly, however, seemed to be plain unsweetened whipped cream, lacking any hint of sweetness and vanilla that chantilly should have. I thought I was spoiling my mom with a special treat last night, but the effort invested in the cake for their website photo was completely missing from the one they sold me. For sitting down to share a slice, we’ll still visit now and then, but with so many excellent bakeries in Vancouver, I don't recommend True Confections if you’re ordering a whole cake for a special occasion. Beyond their product offerings, I have also always had such nice service from this local small business, and had such an above-and-beyond interaction earlier this year with the owner (I didn't know I was speaking with the owner at the time, but realized this at pick-up). The previous cake I had ordered for them had toppled over within blocks of pick-up, and I called for my next order to see if there was any way they could provide the cake in a smaller box this time (I had believed that the cake fell due to the oversizing of the box). Not only did she accommodate this request, but she suggested crafting a special buttercream dam for my lemon meringue cake to fortify its structure, and also provided a small discount for what happened with the cake the previous order (completely unexpected because we still ate that entire cake, it was so tasty despite how it looked). Bought a mini round cake and a sheet cake for my son’s 1st birthday. When we came to pick up the cakes, the mini cake looked nice and was neatly boxed, the sheet cake on the other hand had no box. The owner of Butter Lane gave the cake to us in a dirty Tupperware that was broken and had to be taped together. The Tupperware was also much larger than the cake, which made it difficult to store. The black sesame mochi was divine a perfect blend of thin mochi wrapped around custard and black sesame. The hojicha cream puff was amazing. Perfect puff and hojicha custard. Tomato soup was very salty. Main course was sablefish. The fish was not bad for flavour and not dry. However the bokchoy was old and the gnocchi was flavourless with poor texture. Dessert was tirimisu, which is a fairly easy to make dessert. The ones from Costco taste so much better. This one was overly sweet, had no coffee liqueur flavours at all. Was just sad seeing how many guests ordered the tirimisu and the stsff was just carrying them all back untouched or after just one taste. Disappointed with the meal and I hope they do better with their catering.

The hotel was nice and comfy and we enjoyed the bed, shower, partial harbor views, and took advantage of the restaurant as well for breakfast as we left. It's centrally located and an easy walk to gas town and the cruise terminal/convention center. You can also hear the gas town clock from the rooms if you listen closely. One caution: if you walk from the train station with bags, don't use the north entrance as it only has stairs. Go another block and use that entrance as you won't need to lift heavy luggage.
