I have to say, nowhere have we been looked after so well as we were at The Anchor...I stayed for 2 nights with my mother, we ate in the restaurant both nights... we had a slight issue with our room which was resolved quickly, I have to say the way it was dealt with was second to none!!!
The food was sublime...I've seen a review that moaned about £34 for a steak..our local pub in Norfolk is about that...and nowhere near as good! The tempura oysters were fabulous, so fresh!!!
And the staff... attentive, thorough, friendly, hard working..I could go on...THANK YOU To the Anchor and your whole team for making our weekend a memorable one...we will be back!

This is a very pleasant pub / restaurant in a lovely seaside village.
It offers accommodation, although we don't try that.
There is plenty of parking within the grounds, although that might be stretched in the height of summer.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
We were expecting more seafood dishes, given the location.
However we had a very enjoyable lunch, there is a lot of shaded outdoor seating for summer days

Had a lovely lunch Bank Holiday Monday. Made to feel very welcome, with our two dogs as well. Friendly and very helpful owners and staff. We were able to park in the car park at the rear. Seated at a perfect table inside near the bar area, but this pub also has so much outdoor seating space for the summer I am sure it does extremely well. The food was excellent,
faultless for us at lunchtime. Extensive drinks menu too and some nice hand pulled ales. Can absolutely recommend.

We have a meal here every August bank holiday as a group of around 15 people. This year, I am sorry to say was our last. The quality of the food has gone down and the prices have gone rocketing up. £24 for a simple burger with average oven chips and not even a salad. £34 for a steak. If the food was good, maybe, but for average food, sorry, Anchor, you have lost us. Very disappointing. It was the psychological impact of seeing on the bill £72 for 3 burgers, having just been disappointed by the quality of the one I ate, that did it for me. Next year we will cook ourselves. We can buy quality steak from a butcher and a bottle of fine claret and still have change. Very sad to see this lovely place spoil itself with excessive pricing and cutting corners on quality.

I have often wandered past The Anchor and considered paying a visit, but today was the first time I had been. I wasn't a guest, so I can't speak for the hotel side, but I can highly rate the restaurant side of the business. In what is clearly a very busy venue in peak season, I found everything t9 be serene, of high quality, and welcoming. The staff are some of the friendliest I've ever come across, whilst being professional and working on a sunny day in a place like Walberswick that has limited options for evening dining, so it was busy!
From the point of booking, and the server remembering who i was, and what I'd had planned for the day, to the women recommendation (spot on btw), and the dessert recommendation, which was also a very good choice! (all from different members of staff). They all made it a very pleasant dining experience for a solo diner.
For the food, 3 courses, wine and water qas more than reasonable in process, and the food itself was a mix of simple, seasonal ingredients that was brought to their full potential. In particular the wood fire baked salmon with super salad was perfect for me. Fresh, seasonal, full of flavour. After a 25 mile hike, I left refreshed, refuelled and looking forward to returning again sometime. Thank you

Booked here for Sunday lunch for 4 of us, my friend was a vegetarian and didn't like the option they had on the menu, so the chef very kindly offered to make a beautiful aubergine, roasted peppers and asparagus dish, which even though I'm not vegetarian i opted for aswell! With only 2 eating places in the village ( not cafes), they have a niche market place of very famous & rich clientele. So there food & drinks are presented as extremely expensive to visitors.
A fish loin with handmade chips was an astonishing £20, drinks were on a similar level. Attentive service? They hovered all the time as though they really didn’t want your custom.

Of course, there's only Adnams here, but it's a well kept pint. A few benches outside and people were taking their drinks to the seafront too. There's a pizza company that do food till 8.30 and it's really good. You can even get a box to take leftovers home. The bar staff didn't clear the tables in the entire time we were there. We even walked past half an hour later and our two rounds of glasses were still on the table and it was quiet by then - a bit sloppy really.

What an absolute gem of a place.
Would highly recommend. Extremely friendly service and the food was delicious. We went here with our pooch and reserved a table...well actually a beach hut!! The beach huts come with heating (you can control), blankets (for humans not your dogs) but we didn't actually use as was warm enough. Bluetooth speaker for music which was very atmospheric. Dogs aloud on the seats too (just not the tables or the blankets).

Can highly recommend this bistro. Had a lovely late lunch of Coronation Chicken sandwich and Local Ham Chutney with a side of chips. Their drinks menu is extensive and was welcome after our journey.

Booked a hut, I really recommend pre booking as this place can get very busy. It was a lovely, private experience being in the hut, there is even a radio! The food is really nice, I recommend the lamb roast and the tomato soup, and the staff are super friendly. I recommend this restaurant to most, apart from if you are vegetarian, as there is a lack of options for vegetarians, however I will definitely be back.

A return visit, which was a slight disappointment.
The menu seems to have changed with less Seaford. My partner had scampi and chips, the portion of scampi was big, probably too big. I went for smoked haddock, leak and potato gratain - this seemed to be dominated by potato, but was very good, the addition of broccoli on top was a nice touch.
The restaurant is fairly narrow, and with people walking past to the beach huts outside and the toilets it is busy if you are seated toward the rear of the main building- the restaurant has to work with what the building allows, it may be best to have a table at the front.

An amazing bakery! Wow, The food was very nice the plain and chocolate croissants were gorgeous. The rocky roads so nice, I just think everything in that bakery was amazing. Why did I choose 4 stars? Bought a slice of carrot and walnut cake and a dark chocolate cookie. Both were delicious! The carrot and walnut cake was to die for, we wish we had gone back to get more before heading home.

Two Magpies Bakery looks very stylish from the outside and the selection of baked goodies in the window is intoxicating! Service was fast and friendly. Prices are not cheap but represent good value. They serve coffee and hot drinks and sell tins of pop too. There weren’t pizzas being sold at the time I was visiting but the flavours sounded good. Huge array of pastries and cakes to choose from. I had a very nice hummus and roasted pepper sandwich and a fine cinnamon roll. Would come back for sure.

Phenomenal!!! Never go anywhere else when we’re on our holibobs in Southwold. Staff are so friendly, and always smile. They actually seem to want to be there!! Coffee is lovely too. Never mind a queue at 8am when things are this good. The queue, however, moves slower than the M25 on a bank holiday — plenty of time to reconsider life choices while inching forward.
But what really put me off was the dogs. Inside. In a bakery. Around uncovered fresh food. Why on earth is that considered acceptable? Nothing like watching someone’s labrador panting into the atmosphere being absorbed by the pastries to kill your appetite 🤣. After that, I couldn’t face ordering anything else.

Have been here several times when staying at Southwold and generally like the food but there could be more light snacks such as sandwiches, whilst they do serve "sandwiches" these are as part of a meal and not as a smaller snack that other pubs serve them as. One issue when we were there was they appeared to serve locals before us though this may not have been intentionally. The child's menu burger appeared to be very basic and was similar to frozen meat bought from Iceland and had a thin layer of processed cheese rather than fresh cheese. Also it came with a choice of either beans or peas but no one asked us which we wanted and as such we had to go have it sorted out.
On my first day in Aldeburgh I had the Goujon sandwich here with fries and a salad and it appeared nice and tasty but as mentioned it could do with more of a selection of light snacks.
No problem with drinks and it was very nice to have Southwold Bitter by the seaside.

Well yesterday I was proven wrong for a brief moment in time. The pub showed the Woman’s Euros on a small TV to a fantastic crowd - there was real energy, atmosphere and community! The good times were flowing.
I hope they can continue to host such small sporting events to encourage that sense of personality & community. I’m sure it makes good business sense too!

I really want to give this 5 stars because it is unquestionably the best Fish 'n' Chips in Southwold. Quality is very good. The batter is crispy, light and tasty. The fish portion size could be bigger and possible to be fresher.. The fish was quite dry but I do put this down to how thin the piece of fish was which meant it had dried out during the cooking, we had Haddock. Also ordered a portion of scampi, lovely plumb and juicy and the breadcrumb coating was delicious. Special mention to the Tartare sauce - Superb. I've had to mark it down by 2 points because of price and portion size. Wait time was over half an hour, but that can be forgiven, since the queue was impressively long. Given how popular the place is, c'mon you can be a bit more generous 😀

All staff were incredibly polite, friendly and professional. Very high quality service.
Accommodation was also stunning and well maintained (we stayed in one of the garden rooms.)
Then onto the food 🤤 we ate both in the evening as well as breakfast the following morning.
We ate in the main restaurant, high end food and price but again the quality of food as well as the service was stunning. Also had a few of the cocktails which went down all too easily! Breakfast and service the following morning was of equal quality.
I would certainly stay here again and would highly recommend!

Good hotel in centre of town so you can walk everywhere. Close to the beach. Rooms are comfortable and clean, good sized bathroom. Service is good and free parking. Me and my partner took part in the Adnam Brewery Tour (next door). We also brought The Brewers Board which was provided by the Swan hotel and we really enjoyed it! Definitely needed to soak up all the beer we tasted. Service was lovely and attentive.
Unfortunately where we decided to sit we had loads of small flies flying around us and it wasn't until we were about to leave we saw that the windows had what looked like an infestation so really made us feel uneasy after eating food with the knives and forks nearby.

I had a garden room which was a good size, but very thin curtains let in too much light and there was inadequate space for the kettle and coffee maker. The shower was over a small tub, good pressure but not very safe.

My sylph like appearance belies my love of pastry products so when visiting Walberswick I thought we should have lunch at The Black Dog Deli.
The deli itself is quite small as is Thier bill of fare, but it all looks gorgeous. There is no indoor seating but some outside and as the weather was fine chose to sit there.
I started with a flat white and the coffee is acceptably strong and full of flavour, really good. We then shared a goats cheese, broccoli and caramelised red onion quiche,. The pastry was lovely and crisp and the filling divine, a great combination of flavours. I also bought a sausage roll, but the quiche got the better of us and the sausage roll lives for another day. Walberswick was a lovely place to visit and the Black Dog a must, we will be back.

The best find in Walberswick for a drop off. After finding this by accident a few months ago, we make it our “must visit” stop every time we visit for the day. I booked this place for a special occasion several weeks in advance. I have just been turned away by a very rude front of house for having a small dog with me. I made a mistake of assuming that dining in an outdoor space during Covid will be ok for a well behaved dog as the pictures showed separate huts in their garden. I understand that I should have called to check, but would have expected some sympathy rather than be bluntly told to leave my dog in the car (!) or I will be charged for a no show. It’s not the customer service we would have expected from a “fine dining” restaurant as we’ve been told on several occasions to why they don’t allow dogs. Mistakes happen but rudeness is optional.

I visited the little fish and chip shop with my friend on Saturday 30th August. In the past my experience has been good. Sad to say that on this particular occasion, this was not the case. My friend ordered two cod and chips. We sat indoors and to my horror I bit down on something sharp in my fish. I thought I’d lost a tooth only to find a large sharp flint stone which had been inside my fish. I approached the young, dark haired man at the counter and told him what had happened. Our stay was disappointing.
We entered through the back of the hotel which was grubby and smelt of boiled fish.
Our room, though spacious, had a very badly stained carpet and smelt of takeaway. The valance was hanging off the front of the bed. The room was in need of TLC.
At dinner, our main course was fine but the vegetables that we paid extra for were overcooked and grey. The creme brulee was good but accompanied by inedible madelaines which should not have been allowed to leave the kitchen.
Breakfast was mediocre.
Service was good on the whole but let down by one rude waitress at breakfast.
We felt sad and disappointed about our stay.

If anyone knew Prandium of Southwold, which was a few doors down from the post office and closed in early 2020, the owner James changed location and reopened as ninedeli. As in my previous review of Prandium, the food he serves is top notch! So if you like a good quality reasonably priced lunch, make your way here if you're coming to Southwold for the day or for a short stay.
It's very good value for Southwold, it is mainly takeaway based but there is limited seating.
Update for September 2025, pictures are now attached of his new address in the new Southwold Business hub, in the courtyard behind the 1st parade of shops as you drive into station road and onto Southwold high street. At the time of writing, the menus will change regularly according to the time of year, it's mainly sandwiches, paninis and salads at the time of writing. Coffee is good as well.
Parking. Being a popular seaside town, you may be lucky to park outside in station road, if not you may be able to park in Pier Avenue opposite or in the car park next to where the fire station used to be.

We've been going to the Beach Bistro in Southwold for a few years and have always enjoyed the food.
Location
The fish n' chip shop is ideally and centrally located at the entrance to the pier. You can get access from either outside or from inside the arcades. Loads of seating are available outside, ideal when the weather cooperates but not so good when in the rain. Occasionally, we'll hire a beach hut, bring it back, and eat inside our hut - it's such a great way to enjoy fish and chips at the seaside!
Price
We've always found the price to be quite reasonable. We've previously ordered some bespoke items (such as calamari), which is perhaps more on the punchy side, but otherwise, it's pretty much what you'd expect to pay at the coast.

Great fish and chips! I have been going for several years during summer holidays and think it's excellent. Have tried the fish and chips here on a few occasions and always enjoyed but my most recent trip yesterday in all honesty was a disappointment. I’m not sure if they were just having a bad day or if ownership has changed since my last visit but the battered sausages were pink in the middle and tasted undercooked. The batter around them was so thick and dry. The chips were very basic, pale in colour, appeared just about cooked and the portion size for a medium was ridiculously small. The fish was very bland not much flavour to it and it was full of a ridiculous amount of bones, as if no attempt had been made to remove any. I’m not one to normally complain but this was honestly very poor compared to previous visits and for £20 we wasn’t very happy. If it hadn’t been so busy I would have gone back in to return the food because most of it went in the bin! !

Very much a restaurant with rooms rather than the other way round. The rooms are really nice with modern fittings, high quality bathrooms and seating areas in some rooms. Ours was lovely. There isn’t anywhere to relax outside the rooms once you’ve left the restaurant.

The location is amazing, a stones throw off of the beach and a short walk into Southwold

Fantastic stay. We stayed with our 6 week old baby and the staff could not have been more accommodating or kinder. Travel cot was in excellent condition and the staff even offered to bring food to our room when our little one was being fussy in the eve, meaning we couldn't make our reservation. Unfortunately this place has clearly gone down hill. I went a couple of years ago and ate the best burger I’ve ever eaten. Two years later I was excited to go back but was very disappointed. I said to a waitress and she said no that’s one of our vegetarian burgers… which was in the list of burgers under the statement ‘ALL OF OUR BURGERS ARE 4OZ BEEF BURGERS’. She could not have cared less and couldn’t see how the menu was worded different to what actually came. Next I got the bill and it showed an extra £6.95 - I questioned it and the same waitress said that’s the extra patty… so I showed her the menu and said extra patties are £4. So she said they have increased the prices due to the size of the patty… £7 for a piece of halloumi. So I said until you change your menu to say so you can’t charge made up prices. They did change it on the bill eventually after speaking to a manager. The portion sizes were a lot smaller than two years previous. I could barely finish it then and this time there was a lot less fries and they were far from ‘loaded’. Last time it was a mountain covered in truffle mayo and parmasan. This time a handful with a blob and a sprinkle. The burger was boring, nothing like what I had two years before. I was so excited to go back but unfortunately it went from 5 star to 2.

Southwold is a fantastic seaside town and The Red Lion is in a great position. We popped in there on a weekday evening for hamburgers and a drink. It was quiet but then Southwold is quiet after 7pm, out if the Summer holiday season.

Possibly the best fish and chips in the town. For me it's the quality, consistency, choice and cost that sets it above the others. Light golden batter, delicious fish, perfect chips. Always cooked as before, never over done. Two or three fish sizes for every appetite. Reasonably priced.

Just a 10 min walk from Heathside lodges is The Star a proper village pub, presumably freehouse, with a nice grassy beer garden with field views, colourful exterior lights at night and a quirky and eclectically decorated lounge full of antiques car memorabilia and the humourously obscure ornaments and pictures inside. To the other side if tue pub are some small dining rooms beside it which are neutrally decorated and inviting. So something for every taste if quirky isn't your thing!
Open 12-3 & 6-9pm while we were here, the owners run this place with their heart and soul. The regular locals gave us a smile as did the bar staff when we walked in. The owners clearly love their beers which are sourced from some smaller local breweries around Suffolk such as the fabulous Green Jack brewery (the Golden ale and Trawlerman Bitter are both superb!) as well as the occasional one less mainstream from Adnams (instead of the usual ghost ship) so this time I visited it was Adnams / Five Points co-lab, Distant fields which was tasty and very well kept indeed. Theres also a nice cider on handpul along with the more well-known lagers and ciders on tap.
I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat but I spoke to a couple next to us who had the Game broth (Venison Partridge and Pheasant) and they said it was delicious. We visited this pub and lodges 4 years ago during the autumn covid period of 2020 and I'd long wanted to return in normal circumstances ever since. Some places and landlords make a nice impression and Carl & his wife (sorry didn't catch your name) were both very friendly as they were back in trickier times when they served us outside in a marquee.

We came all the way from Belgium to visit The Star Inn and our expectations were blown out of the window. Simply outstanding. We have been to the Star inn for the past few years and have been delighted with the staff, the great food and the service every time. This time again we were in a large group of about 12 including children and babies. The menu selection is even more breath taking! We dropped in to see if we could get any dinner and threw the staff a real curve ball - two vegans in the party! This was on top of the awkward timing; between Xmas and New Year when kitchen supplies would have been running short.
We'd have been quite happy to have a quick drink at the Randolph and eat elsewhere, but the lady managing the bar went to speak to the kitchen. 10 mins later she returned with a number of creative suggestions that the chef was able to offer.

Went here for a carvery and never again, first the portion of meat are super small and beef undercooked for my liking, then to make that worse the chef was cutting the meat then putting it on your plate with his hands. Discovered this lovely little restaurant/eatery. Animal friendly with a welcoming smile 😃. Although some dogs 🐕 blocked the isle, the staff were fantastic. They even allowed our cat 🐈⬛ suitably contained of course.

Had a visit to this lovely place in Southwold and it truly delivered! At first, the initial welcome felt a little awkward and not very inviting, but once the food arrived, everything turned around. The pulled pork and beef brisket were absolutely fabulous, and the savoury waffle – something we didn’t expect to enjoy – was warm, crisp, and delicious. The fries and bao were just too good as well. Honestly, every dish was spot on.
The ambiance was amazing, and towards the end the staff were warm and welcoming, which really made the whole experience even better. We visited Loaded in Southwold recently and unfortunately it was a bit of a let-down. The restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, yet we still had to wait quite a while before being able to place our order. When the food arrived, it was pretty average – nothing terrible, but nothing to get excited about either.
The service didn’t help the experience. Staff seemed disengaged and not especially welcoming, and our drinks were overfilled to the point they spilled everywhere. Everything just felt like it took far longer than it should, which made the whole visit drag.

Greeted by front of house who explained we would have to order fairly quickly if we wanted food before 8.15. We did! She was totally unflappable and took our take out order very efficiently and professionally.

It'd be roughly 2/40 or so out of our orders per year. my order is about 16 quid, but i'm a fatass if you couldn't tell so i'm sure it's a few quid cheaper for others. portion sizes are great for what I get, and sometimes i'm left having to eat the rest later. overall, it's a 9.5/10 chinese. It's pretty worth it. also, someone complained in another review that the chicken balls have softer batter inside compared to the crispier outside. dude, that is the best part lol.

I spent the day at Dunwich beach and ended up at The Yurt for lunch as it was a short drive away. The food, prepared by a Spanish chef, was well presented and delicious. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit. I also learned that they have cottages available for rent, as well as a spa, hot tubs, and swimming pools. A group of us ate at the Yurt while staying locally, and discovered a culinary gem! The head chef is called Maggie and she walked around talking to guests after we eaten. A fascinating lady and a brilliant chef. Quite honestly, you do not expect to be served food of this quality in a off-the-beaten-track restaurant in Suffolk. Between us we probably had half the dishes on the menu and every one of them was high quality produce, expertly cooked.
I would say this is a Micheling star contender in the making. Everything about our evening meal was excellent, from the staff to the music and the incredible food!

We spent the day at the Dunwich beach and ended up at the Yurt for lunch as it was a few minutes drive away.
The food was prepared by a Spanish chef and was very well presented and tasty.
Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby. We learned about the cottages they rent by the night, the spa, hot tubs, swimming pools etc during our visit. We may have to return for a few nights holiday here some day.

I ordered the Pulled Beef Ravioli, best dish I have ever eaten and I've eaten in many 5* Restaurants. I can't recommend this dish and restaurant enough. The Tiramisu, best I've ever eaten! Absolutely amazing, thank you for a wonderful meal

We decided to give somewhere different a chance, and the images on Google maps reviews definitely helped! We popped in for a tranquil, tasty meal and were not disappointed. Very friendly staff, I had the sea bass which was fabulous and full of flavour, and my partner enjoyed the burger. Would fully recommend the food for sure!

So pleased to have visited The Yurt Bistro on our trip to Suffolk, and would highly recommend anyone to pay a visit.
We found it from a search on Google Maps and booked a table as we liked the idea of an organic yurt dining experience.
The location and yurt were very inviting and the service was extremely good and attentive.
There was a good menu selection and the food was prepared and cooked to a high standard. We all enjoyed our three courses very much. It was also nice to meet the chef who was keen to know our feedback.
If we come to Suffolk again then we’ll be sure to return.
