We are three food loving guys (best friends) from London who came across this establishment over one year ago when we were handed a lunchtime menu by one of their staff whilst walking through Hailsham High Street. Although we could not indulge in Callender’s lunch time offerings at that time we promised to return if ever we were passing through the area in the near future. Roll on a few months and we finally indulged in one of Callender’s lunch deals and we were not disappointed. The food proved to be excellent and beyond our expectations and we have returned to this establishment on numerous occasions to sample other dishes. Our favourite to date ( under two weeks ago) was the steak and kidney pudding which was cooked to perfection and gloriously filled with delicious meat but the liver, bacon and mash is almost just as delectable. We should also mention the delicious whitebait and soup but we could go on and on as all the food is so very good. Callenders is not your run-of-the-mill eatery that only wants to make a fast buck from undiscerning customers. It is clear from the quality of dishes on offer that Killian (chef and owner) is a creative, culinary expert who truly understands what makes great food and his pride and culinary adroitness is clearly reflected in the consistently superlative quality food that he daily serves up for his customers. The bonus in all of this is that the lunchtime deal represents excellent value for money and is almost too good to be true for the beautiful food that you can try across all menu options. Killian is a true master chef with an intimate and comprehensive knowledge of what it takes to make exceptional food and we wish that we had come across his restaurant much sooner. Lastly a mention must be made of the very attentive and professional staff in this restaurant. They really do everything that they can to make your visit as welcome, warm and enjoyable as possible. We cannot praise nor recommend this restaurant enough but please don’t take our word for it. We've often eaten at weatherspoons and this is by far the best. Great non smoking garden with a couple of shades ( need more parasols as people came out but went back in as there wasn't enough shaded areas ). We got a shaded table. Service was good, bit of bother with people crowding around you whilst ordering at the till but the girl operating was exceptionally on the ball. Food arrived quickly and was excellent! We would definitely eat here again if we were in the area another time. Really good place to eat on a budget without out it feeling cheap.

But the Haddock I had and battered sausage was awful, it was like a flat chewy skin, not crispy and fluffy. Normally batter goes fluffy and crispy when it’s fried but this was like deep fried cycling shorts unfortunately. The fish was very dry too but sausage had good flavour. The size of portion for sausage and fish was reasonably good for the price but the batter made me leave most of it in the bin. We were a group of five, with three of us ordering the carvery and two opting for burgers, and unfortunately, our visit was marred by a series of issues that severely impacted our experience. However, when we went to the bar to order, we found the carvery food to be unappetizing, with dry vegetables that were stuck to the cast iron dishes. The peas, in particular, were so dry they had turned white. We raised this concern with the assistant manager, who seemed more interested in checking with the chef about whether they should be refreshed rather than addressing the issue directly. Despite assurances that fresh vegetables would be brought out, we were disappointed to see dirty lids being used and mismatched lids placed on dishes, which raised significant hygiene and allergy concerns. When our carveries arrived, they were barely edible. The vegetables were mostly dry or overcooked, the stuffing was so hard it could have been used as building material, and the mashed potatoes were crusted from sitting out too long. Worse still, we were given only a single thin slice of meat, and the chef placed old, dry cuttings on the plate with it. The cauliflower cheese was welded to the edge of the dish, with only two pieces of cauliflower, and the whole presentation was appalling. The burgers we ordered also left much to be desired. The bacon that was supposed to be ‘crispy’ was anything but, and completely inedible. Additionally, the drinks we ordered, a lemonade and Pepsi, were flat, and the Pepsi didn’t even have ice. When we expressed our concerns, the assistant manager’s response was dismissive and unprofessional. He claimed that the portion of meat we received was bigger than it appeared, and when we asked to speak with another manager, we encountered a combative attitude. The female assistant manager insisted the portion size was “standard” and belittled our concerns. Her response to the state of the food was, “You can see there’s a full main menu there, you should’ve just ordered off of that,” which was completely unacceptable. When we asked for a complaints email, both managers rolled their eyes and dismissed us, with one even acknowledging, “Yes, you have” when we remarked that we essentially made a donation for food we couldn’t eat. Refurbished and looking very impressive and looking welcoming. The food was good. Cheese souffle was excellent, risotto very good, and Roast Pork was good, though portion was close to overwhelming. Just a note that there is no parking at the hotel - the Maltings car park is nearest, but up quite an incline, difficult to spot, and generally full. Beautiful setting. Food was great as was the service. Like to give a big shout out to our waitress Zoe who was fantastic. The only slight negative thing was the bill. I accept discretionary service charge & understand that I could ask it to be removed. We only purchased 4 beers but service charge was also added to the gift voucher which had already been paid for. Parking is widely available and inexpensive. The Maltings carpark is close by. However you will need to be able to navigate a steep hill to access the carpark.

The food was excellent, the service was excellent, the staff were polite, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. I can highly recommend eating here. A superb menu of 3 excellent courses for £55, with lots of choice including a divine fillet steak! However it is the little treats, all included in the price, that make this restaurant stand out, and make the meal a special experience. As a vegetarian the options were tasty, beautifully presented and thankfully far more imaginative than the usual risotto or veggie burger offering at many restaurants. My husband had the best steak he has eaten in years in contrast. Considerations were given to intolerances and everything was served beautifully and with care. Nothing is too much trouble. If you are after a quiet dinner, enjoying fantastic food in a quiet and calm setting this could be for you. We also passed the restaurant several times, as it’s situated on the main road in and out of the village. The building appears to be a beautiful 18th-century farmhouse, and its charm truly takes your breath away. My partner is gluten-free, so we always have to be careful when choosing somewhere to eat to ensure there are suitable options. On our second night, we decided to have a look at the menu on their website. The offering is classic French cuisine — all of it sounding utterly delicious. While there was no mention of specific gluten-free options, most dishes seemed naturally gluten-free. To be sure, I called ahead and spoke to a lovely gentleman who turned out to be one of the owners and the chef. He reassured me that most dishes are gluten-free by nature and that they would be delighted to accommodate us. We booked for 20:00 and were greeted by an incredibly warm and welcoming atmosphere. As the building is an old house, you genuinely feel as though you’re walking into someone’s home. Light jazz filled the air, the décor was cosy and inviting, and the aroma of delicious food only heightened our anticipation. The owner-chef welcomed us personally and offered us the choice of the bar area or the balcony to enjoy a drink while perusing the menu. We chose the balcony, which overlooked the rolling countryside of East Sussex — a beautiful touch. His wife, the co-owner, then took our wine order and food choices with charm and attentiveness. After a couple of glasses of wine, we were shown to our table in the main dining room. The atmosphere was magical — soft lighting, flickering candles casting dancing shadows on the walls, and the gentle hum of content diners. We were surprised and delighted to receive a watermelon amuse-bouche as we sat down — a thoughtful touch not mentioned on the menu. Waiting for us were two baskets of fresh rolls, including a gluten-free option for my partner. I’ve eaten at The Savoy, The Ritz, Grosvenor House, Rules, and many other top restaurants, yet none felt quite as special, welcoming, or perfectly executed as The Sundial. The kings head smashed it out the park, they went above and beyond the make both kids and adults feel extremely welcome! We loved how the kids food came out first which meant they could play outside whilst we had a moment peace to eat, and our roasts were out of this world! My parents had roast which they both thoroughly enjoyed and I had a gf roast which was the best roast I'd had in a long time! We had a good amount of veg between us none of this a sprout of broccoli each malarkey ☺️ proper portions!! And to top it all off the brownie was gf and to die for!! I had coffee ice cream on the side which went lovely!! Will definitely go back and will be singing their praises to anyone that will listen! The burger and wings come in nice large cardboard boxes so if you can’t finish their massive burgers you can just take them away. Went in and was greeted with a warm welcome, chose what I wanted and the service was great, even checked I like hot sauce because the loaded fries I chose have very hot sauce. The chap making the burgers came out and was super friendly and again checked on the hot sauce. Service was quick and I got it take away. Couldn't wait to tuck in and WOW, what a burger. I had blue cheese and bacon and it was delicious as were the loaded fries, but I did sweat after the hot sauce, I was warned! Amazing food, definitely give Hot Spot a try if in the area, they deliver too. Thanks guys for the amazing food.
