We had fish (haddock) and chips served with mushy peas and bread/butter and chicken curry with rice and flatbread. Good size portions without being too big. Flatbread a bit greasy, not sure it was necessary really, but lots of chicken in a tasty sauce. Served by two lovely ladies and a delightful Italian work experience student. Will definitely revisit. You really need to book even on a Tuesday lunchtime.

My wife had the beef roast and was more than impressed. The staff were excellent and worked their socks off, as it was very busy (completely understand why it was packed). The food was amazing and you will not leave here hungry. Well worth a visit and we will be returning in the very near future. Value for money as well. Just excellent! Visited a second time and the meal was excellent again. The only criticism we do have is that even when the bar is quiet and the restaurant is busy with minimal staff, the waiting staff are left to run their socks off while bar staff have a leisurely time serving the odd customer or preparing drinks for orders. The pub has a mixture of a bar only area, bar area with tables and a large restaurant area situated at the far end of the building. We visited on a rather cold night but there was a welcoming large fire in the bar seated area. Having not booked we were asked if we’d like the restaurant which initially appeared a good option as the bar area was full. However it was a little chilly and empty so we opted to return to the seated area and wait for a table. The bar staff were very accommodating and offered us some seats to await a table which came quickly. The menu was large with specials posted on a board with a good overall choice of items. Food arrived quickly and was served hot and full of taste. I would offer a full 5 starts except there were a few pointers. Our table was located next to the doors Leading to the restaurant area. One door however had been damaged earlier which caused it remain open leaving a nasty chill to roll into the room around our legs. The landlord was very good and attempted to resolve the issue but it did somewhat make the area a little uncomfortable for a short while. The premises appears to have had some remedial work completed in the last year with new owners taking over. This however appears to have not followed through to both male or female toilets. Such a shame as with a revamp of the facilities it would be a lot more pleasant. Overall, 5 stars for staff, couldn’t fault them, 5 stars for food and welcome and bar area, but 4 stars for facilities and the annoying draft. Looking forward to perhaps visiting when it’s warmer to make the most of the restaurant and outdoor area.

The reason our food took so long was because they keep.catering for take away! I get that that is part of your business,but to make the people that actual visit your place and choose to spend time there wait a ling time seems like an odd choice. After 1 and 30 minutes and having just finished our meal we wanted to go. It took us another 15 minutes waiting at the till, before any member of the staff bothered coming over and that was because the chef noticed us and pointed it out to the waiter. I am not the person to walk away without paying, but another 10 minutes would have pushed me over the edge. Long story short? Food is great and the setting also but due to long waiting times I would order take away before showing up to claim a seat and eat it there.

Pad Thai - had all the flavours of a pad Thai, was very tasty and authentic really happy with this dish, personally I believe that iy could have been a touch spicier and a touch sweeter . But we’ll made and really happy with the taste. Pineapple Thai rice - lacked flavour, was a rather small portion as well, could have had more of it, needed more nuts as well. I understand that presentation of Thai Orchid is focused as bowls and a smart outlook but pineapple rice is renowned to be known to severed in a pineapple, many places in Thailand and event 5 star hotels and restaurants would do the same. The dish lacked flavour. Chill basil prawns - very well made, flavours were there and hit all the pallet. Was fragrant and spicy, prawns and veg were cooked very well, had great flavours and combinations. Overall I would recommend Thai orchid , it is a great place to visit to enjoy authentic Thai food, it is on the rather pricier scale for what the portion size is. The flavours we done well, it is an interesting atmosphere the Resturant is, a great asset in Battle. Really enjoyed my time.

The pub has a car park, but we chose Battle Abbey as we were shopping for books after dining. On entering the pub a few minutes after 12 noon, it was empty, but for the host. Our early arrival allowed us a window seat, and a quick delivery of two Shandy's and the menu. The lunch menu is not extensive, but in my opinion, doesn't need to be. The accompanying vegetables and fruit, and the manner in which they were presented made the meals really special for us. The desserts are £10 each, which we thought a little expensive. However we have to check ourselves, and remember this is not the 1970s Angel Delight era. The desserts were superb. My wife, who is a good cook, couldn't praise the food enough. The interior of the premises is 'Olde Worldly' with walls decorated with some photographs, a wooden torso and a violin encased in a black birdcage hanging over the bar. But don't let the quirkiness put you off. The young lady who served us was extremely pleasant, good humoured, efficient and has a great personality. If you have the same experience as us, you will not be disappointed.

Considering there was an offer on for £6 carvery this week, to entice people into the restaurant, you’d of thought the management & 2 Chefs would have cooked enough food to cater for the evening. If so this has somewhat backfired as in the 30 minutes, whilst we were there, 10 more people came in, asked about the Carvery & the meat, looked at the scraps they were being offered, yes they were still offering scraps to customers, then people walked out again! The history of the building is also fascinating (and how the hotel gets its name). The rooms are very old and floors uneven but that’s part of the aesthetic. One thing we thought could’ve been better is we we wished the showers worked a little better (no power) and with consistent temperature, it was very hard to use! Overlooking a small village green near the village pub and post office. At the rear there is a good sized car park. The hotel's bar and restaurant are open to non guests. Everyday, after a day out, the hotel is reinvigorated with the smell of furniture polish. There are some great National Trust attractions close by including Bodiam Castle. There were large gaps between the flooring and the wall and some of the sealant had come away. There was also staining on the ceiling. The breaded brie for starter was great, but thought the venison main was a little bland and the crème brulee appeared split. The staff were however friendly, and we had a quirky little table/booth. The service was very friendly, all the staff present were so helpful with us, like Alexandra especially as a big walk-in table on a Saturday afternoon, they were very welcoming As for the food, everything was so delicious and filling, they have a wide choice of meals so there is something for everyone, they also had quite a few gluten-free options expanding their palette. I had the seafood risotto and it was so flavoursome, the drinks aswell were beautifully presented! Our first ever server was Kirsten and she from that day amd every other time since has been super friendly and so lovely with my inpatient hungry children. On a recent visit I have to shout out Sue, we had just ordered and I got a call my family doggy wasnt going to make it at the emergency vets. She done all she could to help us get fed, watered and our way to get to be with family, she was so caring and calming in the situation. Im sure the other person whos always here when we are is Jack. My cheese looked like leftovers from another plate, the ciabatta I was told was ok. But the nuggets were so over cooked my daughter ended up picking the batter off them all. The price was pretty ridiculous too, even for todays cost of living. The aperol spritz however was lovely, which I had 2 of while waiting for our food. Sadly we will not be returning anytime soon.

It is tucked out the way through narrow country lanes. I phoned to make a reservation and the young lady that took my call was extremely polite, friendly and helpful. On arrival the manager greeted us and sat us at our table she was also extremely welcoming. We liked the fact that there wasn’t a huge menu, there was still plenty to choose from and plenty on the specials board for the day. We started with the homemade parfait and warm thick home made bread which was amazing. I had one of the biggest sirloin steaks I’ve seen, which was cooked to perfection. My husband had the home made lamb and mint pie which looked and smelled amazing. If we are ever this way again we will definitely come back.

Unfortunately when we got there, there was a wedding party so there was minimum parking available. I came across it late on Friday night when my family was turned away from the place we booked in Hastings due to the burst water main. Helen made up a room for us while we were driving up. However, having visited today (Sunday lunchtime) we were very disappointed. The drinks were served in paper cups, instead of the usual pot of tea and china cups, and cakes were help yourselves and served on a paper plate rather than a china plate. The self service cake area was very untidy with GF cakes mixed up with non-GF, and could easily be contaminated by shared spatulas. The food choice was restricted to only cakes and scones; no light lunches. Very usually the cafe was virtually empty, which speaks volumes! Tonight we thought we'd try a takeaway. Big mistake. The Lamb Balti tasted nothing like a Balti. It had no spice just an overwhelming sweet flavour. The Lamb was tough. The Chicken Tikka Rogan Josh had no spice. Chicken in tinned tomato's was how my husband described it. The Bombay Aloo Potatoes were spongy and again no spice level. The Nann Bread, Mushroom Rice, Poppadoms and Tandoori Chicken were all lovely. We kregen niet echt een duidelijk alternatief aangeboden om te gaan eten (hun restaurant is zondag gesloten). Het (onervaren) meisje achter de balie mist nog een goede opleiding. Het was fijn om in de zonovergoten Biergarten te zitten, maar de prijs voor een drankje was veel te hoog!! De tuin was wel nog altijd mooi verzorgd. De nieuwe kamers waren wel functioneel, maar misten enkele belangrijke details (zoals Kleenex, douchekapje, een frigo die al aanstaat met bv 2 flesjes water in, een reserverol wc-papier (liefst steviger),…) In de smalle badkamer was de wasbak veel te klein, waardoor het telkens nat was op de grond. We stelden al onze hoop in het ontbijt, maar het meisje dat hiervoor moest zorgen, bleek nog meer scholing nodig te hebben dan deze aan het onthaal. De porties bleken gerantsoeneerd. Zo was er geen yoghurt meer en moesten we meer dan een half uur wachten op croissant/koeken/broodje die bij ons gekozen continentaal ontbijt hoorden. De croissant hebben we nooit gezien en een grote pot melk en een pot heet water bestellen, bleek een onoverkomelijk probleem te zijn waardoor we door de lange intervallen koude koffie moesten drinken en telkens op toasts moesten wachten want die werden ook slechts met mondjesmaat gebracht). We kregen ook niet exact wat we besteld hadden ondanks 2 x herhaald te hebben: bv. tomaten ontbraken. De productkennis ontbrak duidelijk bij het meisje… Voor de prijs die we hier betaald hebben, hadden we een betere service en betere kwaliteit verwacht. Voor dat bedrag hadden we wel een betere accommodatie gevonden… We hadden liever 5 sterren gegeven maar de ontgoocheling was te groot

Arrived to a very quite hotel so manage to park next to the entrance. Quickly checked in & the room was great. Bit rough around the edges in places with damage to a few walls. The blind over the big double doors wasn't wide enough to fully block the sun so room is bright even when closed. Bed is comfy which is always good. Ate on site which was very good. Came quickly & was extremely hot when it arrived, what you want to see. Had a shower & found there was no large towels to be had. Plenty of small ones but not one bath towel Which seemed odd. On the negative side though, it is not easy to walk from the hotel and so needs to start with a drive each day. The room we had was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was not in a modern style and, as always, could do with a refresh but any hotel with older style bathrooms are the same. Breakfast was good enough for us and the bar was more of a lounge area than a real bar with drinks being brought from the kitchen on demand. Still it was nice enough to wind down after a busy day.
