The exterior is a unique blend of country western kitch that helps draw attention to the establishment. But another sign of a great restaurant is the number of cars in the parking lot just after 11am, on a Wednesday. We found a parking spot on the side of the building and only had a short walk to the front door. Once inside, the old country theme continued, with lots of wood, an open ceiling and touches of mismatched architectural elements. You are allowed to seat yourself and there was a small table in a corner near the salad bar that we grabbed. We were promptly provided menus and ordered the "wine of the south" - sweet tea. The tea was excellent - fresh, sweet and not watered down at all. After several minutes of studying the selections, my grandson chose fried catfish, my brother selected the BBQ sandwich and I went for the Cuban sandwich. Both my brother and grandson favorably commented on the sweet tea and immediately dug into their food. They were both highly pleased with their selections. My Cuban was perfect - the crusty bread, ham, pork, cheese and pickles made for one of the best Cubans I've ever had. And the prices were very good. Just look at the photo of the menu below. For example, the Surf and Turf with an 8oz filet and a skewer of grilled shrimp for only $20. That menu item near where I live would be $40 or more. I highly recommend 50 Taters for the food, service and charm. It will definitely be on my list of places to return. And just for fun, I asked one of the employees where the name 50 Taters came from. It's quaint outside and I think the dining experience is supposed to be evocative of dining at grandma's house, but the rather dirty, dim, and run-down looking interior doesn't convey that message. The majority of the gravel parking lot is behind the house. I entered through a side door and immediately saw a hot bar. I'd later figure out this wasn't the "main" entrance, but it's clearly a common one given its proximity to the parking lot. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting a hot bar / cafeteria set up here. I did later figure out they do have a menu you can order from, but I was never offered one. Instead, the lady working behind the hot bar just looked at me like I'd grown three heads as I stared at the bar in befuddlement. I was committed to trying the place, though, so I buckled down and tried to quickly figure out what to order. It's not at all clear what's available to you in what portion and for what cost -- is it a meat and two? Three? Can I have a vegetable plate? What about multiple meats? Is there bread? Dessert? Who knows! I would later see a blackboard at the actual front of the house that had the offerings for the day written on it...but once again, doesn't help if you enter on the side from the parking lot. They were out of a lot of items at around 1:15 on a Friday. I don't hold this against them *too* much as they do close at 2, but it was still a little disappointing. They were out of chicken tenders and fried fish and the hamburger steaks looked unappetizing, to say the least...so I asked if they could do a vegetable plate to which they agreed. I wound up selecting mashed potatoes, buttered carrots, macaroni and cheese, and savory rice from the dishes that remained on the hot bar. I was informed that rolls would be out of the oven in a few minutes. I asked for a sweet tea to drink but was told a waitress would come take my drink order...even though the drink cups and the machine were right next to the hot bar. Just seems weird to have cafeteria style food service but then a waitress for drinks. But off I went to find a table to seat myself. They were doing a decent business despite being near to closing but I found a two-top that wouldn't lead to me taking up too much space. The waitress who was supposed to get my drink order took several minutes to do so, which presented yet another problem as I wanted to start eating my food before it cooled. She did eventually come by and get me a glass of sweet tea, which wound up being far and away the best thing I had. It was really good sweet tea and I gulped it down...but no refill was forthcoming until I was taking my last bite, at which point she reappeared too late. Sadly, the food was largely...not good. The buttered carrots were the worst offenders. They tasted like hospital cafeteria carrots. The macaroni and cheese was very watery and had a suspiciously Kraft cheese-like flavor. I got up after a few minutes to get my roll, which was fresh and warm. Definitely a Sister Schubert baked-from-frozen, but those are honestly fairly tasty, so whatever. The hot bar lady was abruptly a lot nicer when I came to get my roll and she offered me some of their homemade flavored butter, which I accepted, but upon examining it back at my seat I was put off by the texture and so just ate the roll plain. The savory rice had some extra veggies in it, which was nice, but it was oddly on the fairly-spicy side, which was...fine, but unexpected. Still, it was the most flavorful dish, so that was something. The mashed potatoes were the best food item. They were creamy and buttery and a pleasant texture. That's probably the only thing I'd eat again if for some reason I ever find myself here again. On the bright side, it was cheap, at only $11 for lunch. But I didn't enjoy any aspect of my experience, and the sweet tea and mashed potatoes were pretty much the only saving graces. I'm glad to cross another establishment off my list "to-try" list, but that's about it for here.

She returned with my tea wordlessly and swiped up my slip with my order. I circled a fried chicken breast with "potato patties" and fried okra. The sweet tea was the best thing I had and I enjoyed drinking it while I waited for my food. No refills or to go cups were ever offered though. I will grant the food came out fairly fast...but it also came out cold. Well, the chicken and potatoes were approximating room temperature, but the okra wasn't even lukewarm. My grouchy waitress also didn't give me any silverware and ran off before I could ask for any. I had to hunt down a different, only marginally less grouchy waitress so I could eat my food with a fork. It's a shame the okra was cold because it had a hint of potential; the breading was sort of cornmeal-y and might have once been crispy. As it was, it wasn't good at all -- the cold okra got slimy. The chicken was passable but also not nearly hot enough. The breading also needed more seasoning. The potato patties were...not patties? I was expecting something like a Jojo (small crispy potato round, thicker than a chip) or at least something circular lol, but instead I got two scoops of a sort of whipped potato casserole. This would've also been alright except it was lukewarm and, even worse, absolutely replete with still-crunchy large pieces of onion. Couldn't get a mouthful without them and left with much smellier breath. The one redeeming factor other than the tea was the bread basket: two yeast rolls and a hunk of cornbread. The cornbread was awful (bland and dry), but the yeast rolls were soft and warm and about the only food item I legitimately enjoyed -- even though, once again, my waitress left me hanging with no butter. I really couldn't wait to get out as I felt terribly unwelcome, so as soon as I ate what I could stomach I went to the marginally less unfriendly waitress and paid at the register. The price was decent (~$15 before tip). I did still tip, but I was salty -- legitimately some of the worst service I've had in a long time. I'm forgiving of long wait times and forgotten stuff, but I really don't like callous attitudes when I do my best to be pleasant and accommodating. Definitely wouldn't return. 2 stars because the food was edible and the place was clean enough. The hunt for a decent lunch in Scottsboro continues.

It is a cute little mom and pop diner with a nice selection of home-style menu items. Fried chicken, Hamburger steak, Chicken and dumplings, etc. My hubby tried the Hamburger Casserole with a salad and baked potato, and I had the BBQ Stuffed Potato. Portions were good, and the prices were reasonable. We ordered a slice of Sawdust Pie to go because they are apparently famous for their desserts....and it was fantastic. It was like Coconut Pie and Pecan Pie had a baby, and it was a great combination of flavors. The server was very friendly and checked on us often. Definitely a cute hometown vibe with lots of hometown recipes to choose from.

I'm talking as dry and hard as an Alabama Highway in July. Ya boy ate 'em like a champ and shouted out my mama in Heaven knowing she'd be proud of me not forgetting where I came from. By the way, they didn't toast my bread and also got my sides wrong on top of sending me home with one set of plasticware for two dinners after me asking multiple times for these said condiments. You can spend your money here if you like but KC's BBQ is only a few miles away and I have never been disappointed there. They are closed on Wednesdays or I would've went there to begin with. I lucked out with Holy Smokes. I've been to a couple barbeque places in Scottsboro, and this is my favorite so far. The parking lot is a little bumpy / pot-holey so be careful pulling in. I rolled into the restaurant and immediately felt that this was a local-type spot. The man operating the cash register was engaged in a very friendly, familiar conversations with someone eating there. However, he paused his conversation immediately when I walked up to him and taught me about the different sauces they offered. I'm glad he did, because I definitely have bbq sauce preferences, and he steered me in the right direction! Their fairly large menu is handwritten on the board behind the register, but I opted for a lunch deal they had running - a small pulled pork sandwich with chips and a drink for only $5!! Now granted, it was a small sandwich -- if you were starving you'd likely need a little something extra -- but for how delicious the sandwich was and for that cheap, you really can't do much better than that! The pulled pork itself was really, really good - honestly some of the best bbq I've had in north Alabama. Tender, moist, moderately smoky, not too fatty. Really, really good stuff. The sweet sauce the man at the register set me up with was good too, also faintly smoky and tangy on top of the usual sweet tomato flavor. It was a delicious sandwich, and the sweet tea I got was good too, though maybe not quite sweet enough for me. I plan on coming back with family so we can try some of their other bbq. If the pork stays consistent and the other stuff is even 75% as good, this could definitely be a 5 star spot. Check it out if you're in the area!

New owners came a while back and the food changed a little but was still good. But today was my turning point and I won't be back. First of all there is no prices posted anywhere in the store and to my surprise a dozen cream filled donuts is now $33.00! They are good but that's excessive. The biscuits were extremely stale and the chicken finger was extremely dry and disgusting. I then got sick immediately after eating it. With the high prices and declining food quality I will no longer be coming here or recommending it to anyone as I have in the past. At least it was clearly fresh and high quality, which is much more than you can say for fast food. Like I said, food was cooked fresh but still came out to me in a timely manner. Heck, the fries were still so hot I burned my mouth a teeny bit! I was just trying to eat and get out of their hair before closing, so my bad there haha. Frozen-fried crinkle cuts but they were nice and crispy. My biggest complaint about the whole experience was the salt was sort of just thrown on them in a pile at the top. So a few fries were extremelyyyyy salty and others not at all. The burger was, as expected, the star here! Cooked about medium-well, it was still plenty juicy despite the relative thinness of the patty. The mushrooms and Swiss cheese were so buttery and melty together. They add bacon to their mushroom and Swiss and honestly I could take it or leave it. Some of it wasn't as crispy as I prefer, and I think the mushrooms add the extra savory punch so bacon makes it a little heavy, but I'm honestly nit picking here. It was a very yummy burger. I very much enjoyed myself. This is the kind of spot my folks would love, so I hope to bring them back in the future, and also to come try the delightful-sounding Moon Pie banana pudding!

Surprising in the sense I was expecting a good burger and got a great one and flavorful in a way I don't recall eating a burger seasoned this way. The fries and onion rings were amazing. When I ate there, I felt like he made the food the way he liked it and how he'd want his family fed. The kids loved the desserts (moon pie banana pudding! What!? and a peanut butter pie!) I discovered he's in between help right now, so not everyone gets the opportunity for the owner to cook for them but I have no doubt he expects his same quality from whoever is behind the grille. I got a chicken sandwich and it was burnt badly. The owner told me "chicken is chicken". He cut into his hamburger and ate maybe 4 bites and was done and this is coming from a man who usually eats two steaks if offered. Nobody in there had hairnets on and their hair was either down or in a messy bun with strings of hair hanging down. It wasn’t a very presentable look. It’s definitely not a place I’d make a special trip for again. It’s very small, the bathroom is down a long narrow hallway and the door doesn’t even lock. The cook was nice, he talked to me for a bit about their wing challenge and the different spicy peppers used in hot sauces. We were sadly disappointed though. They have beer but, nothing on tap. That was the best part outside of the service. The food is sub par, not even as good as the older name.... The ribeye was mostly fat and was not cooked to order. My wife ordered a ribeye and got a sirloin. The blooming onion was worth the price of zero, horribly greasy and served like it had been sitting in the back for awhile. We wish they had actually updated the decor as well instead of a bad paint scheme with the same old furniture. The same 1970's music. Really thought they were going to remodel and make this something new and better. Sad to see this half hearted attempt. Scottsboro new and would appreciate a new quality restaurant.

Right off the bat I instantly regretted our decision when our order was being taken. Probably should have walked out at that point, but we ordered anyway. I ordered Cajun grilled chicken without the bed of rice (because I don’t eat rice) and the Broccoli & Cheese Casserole. When the meal came I noticed the casserole had rice in it. Would have been nice to have known it had rice as I would have made another selection. One kid ordered fried chicken tenders and fries, the other a cheeseburger and baked potato. Some of the chicken tenders were not done, but she enjoyed her fries. The other enjoyed hers for the most part. She didn’t get what you normally would receive on the baked potato. We concluded that you must have to ask for it when ordering because she wasn’t asked what she wanted on it. Then when she tried to use the salt shaker nothing come out. The top of the shaker looked really dirty. This was the end of the Stampede for us…

Wow was I super disappointed. First off service was slow, unfriendly and apparently untrained. My wife and I both ordered dinners that were supposed to come with salads, we were even asked what dressing we wanted. That didn't matter the salads are still MIA. My dinner was the steak tips in mushroom gravy and let me say that's the only reason this place didn't get just 1 star. The food, miniscule as the portion was, was superb. When my wife went to check out the cashiers were in an apparent important discussion with themselves about nothing. After ignoring her they finally decided to check her out and when notified about our meal and lack of service offered nothing in recompense. Definitely will not be making this mistake twice.
