We chose Smoky Boys as our pre-bowling meal for our 10 year anniversary date night. I was so excited to try the food here as the menu looked amazing and the reviews were good. Upon arrival, we questioned whether the place was open as it was empty at 7pm however we saw one other couple and just assumed because of Storm Claudia that it was a quiet night. We ordered two starters to share which were fine - nothing exciting. Our burgers were actually really nice, except my truffle burger didn't taste a bit like truffle at all. The side of macaroni cheese I ordered was abhorrent - kraft macaroni cheese would have been a better option. The pasta shells were so soft they were like mush, and the sauce was completely tasteless other than the faint aftertaste of plastic. I've honestly bought better macaroni cheese baby meals for my toddler. When the food was taken away, the server (who was very polite and I did feel quite bad for him as he seemed new) didn't question the still full plate of macaroni. He brought over the pictured piece of paper saying that if we give a good review, you receive a free dessert or drink etc. Finally then I understood why the reviews were so good - a total con. In fairness the macaroni was removed from our bill, as well as the ridiculous 12.5% service charge, however I still felt that a £70.00 dining experience which lasted less than an hour and was barely enjoyable felt like a huge rip off. My advice would be to choose one of the other, busier establishments at Xscape and to not try this place based on its Google Reviews, but to instead look at TripAdvisor where the reviews are not incentivised.

Having been to other branches before and always had a great experience, this visit was honestly such a letdown. When the food came out, it looked like the pizza oven had been turned up far too high everything looked overdone. To make matters worse, one of our party ordered a BBQ Chicken pizza that arrived without any chicken! As if that wasn’t enough, the cocktails came out in Coca-Cola tumblers! The staff in general seemed disinterested, we waited ages for sauces, cutlery wasn’t replaced, and there just didn’t seem to be anyone around to help. Then, Lee appeared and thank goodness he did. He was genuinely shocked (as we were!) to see a BBQ Chicken pizza missing its main ingredient, and he immediately took action. He had a fresh pizza made right away, replaced our cocktails with ones in proper glasses, put the ones in tumblers in proper glasses and even took the time to check everything was sorted. His sense of humour, professionalism, and kindness completely turned the experience around. Lee is a true credit to Pizza Express, nothing was too much trouble for him, and he single handedly saved what would have been a total disaster of a meal. He absolutely deserves the Flame Pizza badge for outstanding customer service. Without Lee, this would have been a one-star experience but thanks to him, we left with a smile.

The toilets were ok but not the best for cleanliness with one flusher not working in the ladies and the wash basins were old and not very good either. Firstly walked in and and sat down. No acknowledgement that we had entered. Went on the hunt for menus which wasn't a problem, the lady apologised for not bringing them over as they were short staffed and a bit busy - understandable. Ordered our food and the food is very good, my meal didn't come with chips despite it saying it on the menu, when asked the lady she did apologise and she said it was her fault they didn't come, again apology accepted. My mother in law went to the counter and asked for some mayonnaise with her meal (again the menu said hers came with garlic mayo but didn't come). When asked another lady serving was quite snappy and said 'just give me a minute ' and continued to do something else behind the counter. After 5 minutes whilst our food was getting cold and my MIL went back up again to ask for some mayonnaise and it was finally brought over but with no apology or acknowledgement. In conclusion I really think the service let the side down today as the food was really nice, fresh and hot. Also purchased some deli food to take away which was equally as nice. Maybe if the staff are struggling with demand it could be worth having more staff on at busy lunchtimes. I'm a lover of supporting small businesses and I have shared my review in the hope that changes can be made. Just felt like our presence was an inconvenience ☹️
