I came here because of recommendations on Reddit for a good sushi spot in Providence. Some comments were saying sushi in Providence is trash, and to head to Cranston. They might have been right I fear. We were seated quickly. The inside has a nice comforting feel. It took a while for the server to come to us, but that gave us plenty of time to decide. We ordered the steamed shrimp shumai, sushi regular, and chicken yakisoba. The shumai were a healthy size and were very good. Definitely my favorite part of the meal. The sushi was very basic, honestly I’ve had better sushi at market basket. The yakisoba was fine, but nothing spectacular. We did enjoy the miso soup and salad that came with them, but I have had better for less $. In addition I felt service was quite slow in getting us our check. Overall save your money. There are definitely better spots not too far away.

Sashimi (chutoro, salmon, hamachi, ikura) was excellent! We’ve been going to Ran Zan for many years and more recently, not as often as we’d like. We were there last Friday evening, on the early side, so we wouldn’t have to wait for a table. We were seated immediately and told that if we order sushi bar items, it would take a little longer. We don’t mind longer wait times, and appreciated the heads up so we could order some non-sushi appetizers. We had the grilled hamachi kama (fish collar), which is always delicious and highly recommended. If you haven’t tried it, please do! We also got the agedashi tofu and yakitori (grilled chicken). The tofu was very good, as usual, but not to my surprise, the chicken wasn’t anything special. With dinner, which was a mixture of a la carte selections of sashimi and nigiri, I had a nice, icy cold Sapporo. Tuna was very fresh, hamachi was delicious, and salmon was also good. For groups of eight, the restaurant has round tables that allow everyone to participate in a single conversation, rather than only the people sitting next to them. If you’re looking for a place to have a dinner with a group around 7-8PM before heading out to the bars to celebrate a birthday or other occasion, this is a great option. The food and drinks are consistently very good. The sushi pizza was a big hit for our group. The crust of the pizza is thin and is similar to a very crispy scallion pancake or outside of an egg roll. The crust is topped with either salmon or tuna; our group went with the salmon. On top of that is tonkatsu sauce, spicy mayonnaise, tobiko, and jalapeños. I’d definitely recommend giving the sushi pizza a try as an appetizer. The walnut shrimp is also excellent. The “fruit mayonnaise sauce” the shrimp is served in may sound unusual, but it balances the flavor of the lightly battered fried shrimp really well. The server was attentive and the robot (yes, robot!) that assisted him was very entertaining. However, today I noticed the tuna was bright red (almost looked like it was dyed) and had a very strong fishy taste, as did the salmon.
