We found a parking spot on the side of the building and only had a short walk to the front door. Once inside, the old country theme continued, with lots of wood, an open ceiling and touches of mismatched architectural elements. You are allowed to seat yourself and there was a small table in a corner near the salad bar that we grabbed. We were promptly provided menus and ordered the "wine of the south" - sweet tea. The tea was excellent - fresh, sweet and not watered down at all. After several minutes of studying the selections, my grandson chose fried catfish, my brother selected the BBQ sandwich and I went for the Cuban sandwich. Both my brother and grandson favorably commented on the sweet tea and immediately dug into their food. They were both highly pleased with their selections. My Cuban was perfect - the crusty bread, ham, pork, cheese and pickles made for one of the best Cubans I've ever had. And the prices were very good. Just look at the photo of the menu below. For example, the Surf and Turf with an 8oz filet and a skewer of grilled shrimp for only $20. That menu item near where I live would be $40 or more. I highly recommend 50 Taters for the food, service and charm. It will definitely be on my list of places to return. And just for fun, I asked one of the employees where the name 50 Taters came from. Honestly this had to be some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. First off I got belittled by the manager. I ordered the burrito grande which isn't a burrito. Yes I should have looked closer on the description. The manager treated me like a child when I told him I didn't want this. Also there was probably only three chicken strips on this thing. Mexican food is cheap to make. All he would have needed to say is I'm sorry your not happy with your selection can we get you something else. I swapped this out for the California burrito which came with no cheese on top and the chicken was dry as you know what. My wife's taco salad was the smallest I've ever seen. It's quaint outside and I think the dining experience is supposed to be evocative of dining at grandma's house, but the rather dirty, dim, and run-down looking interior doesn't convey that message. The majority of the gravel parking lot is behind the house. I entered through a side door and immediately saw a hot bar. I'd later figure out this wasn't the "main" entrance, but it's clearly a common one given its proximity to the parking lot. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting a hot bar / cafeteria set up here. I did later figure out they do have a menu you can order from, but I was never offered one. Instead, the lady working behind the hot bar just looked at me like I'd grown three heads as I stared at the bar in befuddlement. I was committed to trying the place, though, so I buckled down and tried to quickly figure out what to order. It's not at all clear what's available to you in what portion and for what cost -- is it a meat and two? Three? Can I have a vegetable plate? What about multiple meats? Is there bread? Dessert? Who knows! I would later see a blackboard at the actual front of the house that had the offerings for the day written on it...but once again, doesn't help if you enter on the side from the parking lot. They were out of a lot of items at around 1:15 on a Friday. I don't hold this against them *too* much as they do close at 2, but it was still a little disappointing. They were out of chicken tenders and fried fish and the hamburger steaks looked unappetizing, to say the least...so I asked if they could do a vegetable plate to which they agreed. I wound up selecting mashed potatoes, buttered carrots, macaroni and cheese, and savory rice from the dishes that remained on the hot bar. I was informed that rolls would be out of the oven in a few minutes. I asked for a sweet tea to drink but was told a waitress would come take my drink order...even though the drink cups and the machine were right next to the hot bar. Just seems weird to have cafeteria style food service but then a waitress for drinks. But off I went to find a table to seat myself. They were doing a decent business despite being near to closing but I found a two-top that wouldn't lead to me taking up too much space. The waitress who was supposed to get my drink order took several minutes to do so, which presented yet another problem as I wanted to start eating my food before it cooled. She did eventually come by and get me a glass of sweet tea, which wound up being far and away the best thing I had. It was really good sweet tea and I gulped it down...but no refill was forthcoming until I was taking my last bite, at which point she reappeared too late. Sadly, the food was largely...not good. The buttered carrots were the worst offenders. They tasted like hospital cafeteria carrots. The macaroni and cheese was very watery and had a suspiciously Kraft cheese-like flavor. I got up after a few minutes to get my roll, which was fresh and warm. Definitely a Sister Schubert baked-from-frozen, but those are honestly fairly tasty, so whatever. The hot bar lady was abruptly a lot nicer when I came to get my roll and she offered me some of their homemade flavored butter, which I accepted, but upon examining it back at my seat I was put off by the texture and so just ate the roll plain. The savory rice had some extra veggies in it, which was nice, but it was oddly on the fairly-spicy side, which was...fine, but unexpected. Still, it was the most flavorful dish, so that was something. The mashed potatoes were the best food item. They were creamy and buttery and a pleasant texture. That's probably the only thing I'd eat again if for some reason I ever find myself here again. On the bright side, it was cheap, at only $11 for lunch. But I didn't enjoy any aspect of my experience, and the sweet tea and mashed potatoes were pretty much the only saving graces. I'm glad to cross another establishment off my list "to-try" list, but that's about it for here.

Frozen-fried crinkle cuts but they were nice and crispy. My biggest complaint about the whole experience was the salt was sort of just thrown on them in a pile at the top. So a few fries were extremelyyyyy salty and others not at all. The burger was, as expected, the star here! Cooked about medium-well, it was still plenty juicy despite the relative thinness of the patty. The mushrooms and Swiss cheese were so buttery and melty together. They add bacon to their mushroom and Swiss and honestly I could take it or leave it. Some of it wasn't as crispy as I prefer, and I think the mushrooms add the extra savory punch so bacon makes it a little heavy, but I'm honestly nit picking here. It was a very yummy burger. I very much enjoyed myself. This is the kind of spot my folks would love, so I hope to bring them back in the future, and also to come try the delightful-sounding Moon Pie banana pudding!

She returned with my tea wordlessly and swiped up my slip with my order. I circled a fried chicken breast with "potato patties" and fried okra. The sweet tea was the best thing I had and I enjoyed drinking it while I waited for my food. No refills or to go cups were ever offered though. I will grant the food came out fairly fast...but it also came out cold. Well, the chicken and potatoes were approximating room temperature, but the okra wasn't even lukewarm. My grouchy waitress also didn't give me any silverware and ran off before I could ask for any. I had to hunt down a different, only marginally less grouchy waitress so I could eat my food with a fork. It's a shame the okra was cold because it had a hint of potential; the breading was sort of cornmeal-y and might have once been crispy. As it was, it wasn't good at all -- the cold okra got slimy. The chicken was passable but also not nearly hot enough. The breading also needed more seasoning. The potato patties were...not patties? I was expecting something like a Jojo (small crispy potato round, thicker than a chip) or at least something circular lol, but instead I got two scoops of a sort of whipped potato casserole. This would've also been alright except it was lukewarm and, even worse, absolutely replete with still-crunchy large pieces of onion. Couldn't get a mouthful without them and left with much smellier breath. The one redeeming factor other than the tea was the bread basket: two yeast rolls and a hunk of cornbread. The cornbread was awful (bland and dry), but the yeast rolls were soft and warm and about the only food item I legitimately enjoyed -- even though, once again, my waitress left me hanging with no butter. I really couldn't wait to get out as I felt terribly unwelcome, so as soon as I ate what I could stomach I went to the marginally less unfriendly waitress and paid at the register. The price was decent (~$15 before tip). I did still tip, but I was salty -- legitimately some of the worst service I've had in a long time. I'm forgiving of long wait times and forgotten stuff, but I really don't like callous attitudes when I do my best to be pleasant and accommodating. Definitely wouldn't return. 2 stars because the food was edible and the place was clean enough. The hunt for a decent lunch in Scottsboro continues.

It is a cute little mom and pop diner with a nice selection of home-style menu items. Portions were good, and the prices were reasonable. We ordered a slice of Sawdust Pie to go because they are apparently famous for their desserts....and it was fantastic. The French fries were NOT “homemade”—they were school cafeteria frozen bag quality. ALL of the condiments (ketchup, etc.) were “Great Value” Walmart brand. All of the barbecue sauce was TERRIBLE. The “thick” tasted like Walmart brand cheap quality. All of the other vinegar-based barbecue sauces were SO THIN they were like WATER!!! It was impossible to put on a sandwich without having mush for bread. We waited well over 15 minutes for food even though we were the only people there. The staff were INCREDIBLY RUDE and didn’t act like they wanted to be there. It’ll be a long time before I try BBQ out again.

I stood around for another ten minutes while the lady searched for honey mustard, ketchup, and H57 I'd requested when calling it in. When I finally get home I see my chicken fingers are burnt. I'm talking as dry and hard as an Alabama Highway in July. Ya boy ate 'em like a champ and shouted out my mama in Heaven knowing she'd be proud of me not forgetting where I came from. I was hungry and hadn't eaten since yesterday, plus knew I'd never order food here again. I only wish I had taken pics first. Anyways, I'm sharing a photo of what my entire order essentially looked like. If you zoom in you can even see where the chicken fingers were so burnt that they had melted the styrofoam plate. Nor do I feel they deserved a phone call. What they did deserve is an honest Google review and here it is. By the way, they didn't toast my bread and also got my sides wrong on top of sending me home with one set of plasticware for two dinners after me asking multiple times for these said condiments. You can spend your money here if you like but KC's BBQ is only a few miles away and I have never been disappointed there. They are closed on Wednesdays or I would've went there to begin with. We were greeted nicely the moment we walked in and the atmosphere was delightful. When we got there we pull up to literally a hole in the wall. It was a restaurant at the end of some buildings and the outside appearance had me worried. They have no parking lot. You have to park parallel in front of their building. We walk in and was seated in one of maybe seven booths in front of the ice cream bar and there’s literally only enough room for one person to walk between the booths and the bar. We got seated and ordered our drinks he got coke zero and I got water. It came out as bottled water because for some reason they don’t serve tap. After seeing the outside of the building and not serving tap water I was starting to get worried. I then seen the health score of 83. My boyfriend orders the smash burger and I ordered chicken fingers and the wait time on our food was great. The food looked delicious and we were excited to dig in. I took a bite of my chicken tender and it was so tough I could hardly bite it. He cut into his hamburger and ate maybe 4 bites and was done and this is coming from a man who usually eats two steaks if offered. I unfortunately didn’t try the burger so I can’t speak much for it but he didn’t even touch his fries. The okra and potato curls on my plate was decent. Nobody in there had hairnets on and their hair was either down or in a messy bun with strings of hair hanging down. It wasn’t a very presentable look. It’s definitely not a place I’d make a special trip for again. It’s very small, the bathroom is down a long narrow hallway and the door doesn’t even lock. The best thing I can say about this place is they had good taste in music with Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley playing!

So we decided to check it out. When we walked in the lady at the counter was nice, but when I asked for a recommendation on what was popular she said "pretty much anything". Not very helpful considering I told her I wasn't from the area. I was pleasantly surprised to have found coffee milkshakes as those seem to be non-existent here. So I ordered one of those. When I asked her about the toppings I wanted cookie dough, but they were minimal; no candies, cookies, fruits or anything like that. They didn't have cookie dough, no big deal just a plain coffee shake then. I literally got a vanilla shake with what I imagined must have been made with syrup. This thing tasted like a straight up vanilla bean flavored glass of milk. It was so disgusting I threw it out immediately. Maybe the food was better, but I don't know. The lady at the counter was just par for customer service and really threw me off. The cook was nice, he talked to me for a bit about their wing challenge and the different spicy peppers used in hot sauces. Kudos to him, but I just wanted to get out of there so I could throw out my glass of milk and sugar without being disrespectful. If you're from the northeast stay away from these milkshakes they will let you down.

Definitely not in the mood for fast food so we looked up restaurants and found this great little place. The service was good. Food was clean and fresh and served quickly. We had veggie omelet and eggs with biscuit and gravy, hash brown’s and toast. The gravy is the only thing i would improve on but it wasn’t terrible and Everything else was really good. It was a nice choice and experience and we love supporting small business. The price was less than $20 for 2 plates which is good.
