Whangarei. There are a lot of choices including gluten free and vegetarian dishes. The food is a little bit on the sweet side and not quite spicy enough if you're from SE Asia. But they probably have to adjust the temperature to suite the kiwi tastebud so that's understandable. Service was great and the wait staff were patient and courteous albeit they don't speak Thai. Food was well prepared, authentically seasoned, and came in generous portions. I had the Penang suj jai which was phenomenal. In fact it was so good that I took two spoonfuls before I remembered to take a picture. Parking is a bit challenging as you have to park on the street. I'm not sure whether it's OK to park in the parking lot shared by a bunch of chain restaurants a block away.

Place looks beautiful. Tidy and clean. Initially the waitress who looked after us was professional and friendly. Had dumplings as a starter. Then mains, Duck and Ramen bowl. Maybe we are not used to Japanese cuisine of this nature. But my Ramen had no flavor. Apart from hint of Miso an Peanut coming through. The duck was partly dry and was cold, plus for a non spicy dish getting chunks of chilli was a funny shock to mum who didn't recognize the slices in the duck dish. Anyway our waitress returns and asks how the meal was. I shrugged my shoulders and tried to make light of it as its hard giving straight up feedback. I mentioned lack of flavour an that I stole some of the hoisen from the duck dish. The waitress asked if i wanted something else but im never sure what that entails and didn't want to upset anyone. I never saw the waitress again. She collected our plates off mum when I was in the bathroom and didn't offer any further assistance. A while later she collected plates at the table next to us and asked how their food was. They said "good thanks", the waitress replied with "that's what I like to hear, it makes my life easier". It was intentionally to have us hear. She seemed mildly agitated when walking around. But we enjoyed the atmosphere and other aspects of the service. I'll make mention of one last thing. Not always a good look plucking your g string from your butt while walking the floor looking after people's food in plain site. But it definitely lightened our somewhat tainted mood.

The beef pho was massive definitely one of the larger pho I’ve had and the broth was sweet, not too savoury or salty I do like more fish sauce but it was delicious. The banh mi was what I was wanting. Crispy bread with heaps of veggies and tasty chargrill chicken thigh. It’s the first Vietnamese restaurant I’ve been to that has hoisin as a table condiment which went well with the banh mi. Tables were actually cleaned with detergent not just wiped with a wet cloth. It’s my top 5 restaurant for Whangārei for value for money.

We ordered drinks as soon as we could catch the waitresses attention, then food after that. The drinks took 35 minutes to arrive but the floor staff didn’t check in to say they were on their way or apologise for the delay. They arrived well after the food. We shared a few dishes between us and I politely asked if it were possible to have larger share plates (they set the table with bread plates) the waitress said sorry that’s just not possible. I couldn’t understand why so I asked the owner personally who absolutely refused also, even though I said any larger plate would be most appreciated. I even offered to pay! He said they had a one meal per person policy after I had paid for everything (if so, it was not written anywhere and we weren’t notified prior to ordering so had no idea). He ended up giving us the forks for $5 - it’s more the principle than anything else, I would understand if we were in a big group and ordered a couple meals, but we just wanted to share three big dishes amongst four people. The quality of the food also did not outweigh the rudeness, so all-round really disappointing experience unfortunately. Ironically, no sense of hospitality or service was felt here. If you're a local & find yourself complaining about this wee Whangarei kai gem, then go back to KFC, don't be so whiny there's barely anything up here!!. We've always found it a bit hard (but love it up here, gee you fellas are lucky eh!!! no dramas up these ways!) after running away from Tāmaki Makaurau, as quite frankly the 80s is in full effect in infrastructure & environment which can be quite hard to adjust too. So, Jafa here, used to North Shore & Inner City food spots. Not sure if I was supposed to eat the noodle type cup that my beef came in, but I ate it anyway cause I can. The waitress of the night was excellent. For a second there the girl looked so uncoordinated that i thought she was going to spill them. The food came in good time but was bland and unseasoned- no flavor. We expected better to be honest. I tasted all 3 meals, and would say all 3 were very average. With better staff it could be a fabulous place to come. **may or may not be the issue of this cafe (or another business nearby) but the stench of sewage in the cafe was over powering- the toilet had no water in it, the toilet roll holder fell open as I tried to pull off the roll and I couldn't keep it shut / keep it from falling on me. However the hot and spicy boneless pieces were disappointingly small, not much bigger than chicken nuggets, and the two largest pieces in the pack (still smaller than a wicked wing) were undercooked, with slimy unrendered gristle. We took these to the counter, explained the problem, and indicated we did not expect a full refund or replacement meal but would be happy with a couple of wicked wings. The staff member went to the manager who required me to explain the issue again. She gave approval to the other staff member who had assisted me to box two wicked wings for us, but then denied the chicken was undercooked and pulled the pieces I took back apart with a pair of tongs demanding that I explain what was wrong again, which led to a ridiculous back and forth of me describing exactly the same issue again and again whilst she came up with various different ways of deflecting and denying there was a problem. The stringy raw looking muscle of the chicken was apparent all the way through this Monty Python-esque exchange, a la "this parrot is not dead" I still cannot believe the lengths this manager went to in order to undermine the reputation of KFC with this unhinged response to a genuine concern raised by a customer. All while the remedy that would have avoided this negative publicity (and the letter sent to Restaurant Brands) sat on the counter, only for this manager to refuse to hand it over after pulling the piece apart and seeing the issue with her own eyes. I will not return to KFC Whangarei until my lawyer receivez a satisfactory response from Restaurant Brands.

When I went last time I wanted something hotter because I felt like the hot butter chicken wasn't hot enough so I asked for Indian hot butter chicken. Now these Chilli's are like the size of my finger which seems bite sized so I ate a hole green Chilli when I tell you I had unbearable pain I'm my mouth for 10 minutes I mean it. They server gasped as I ate it then my hole family started laughing but it was still an amazing experience(I also got a free ice cream with these tasty doughy balls to help with the pain). This time I wanted something hotter so when they asked me what I wanted I said an Indian hot butter chicken but hotter. The server knew me at this point from last time so he knew the drill. he brought it out and when I tried it I could really feel the burn but it was somehow even better than last time truly the best curry I've ever had. When I asked him how much Chilli's were in it he said 9. I was so shocked that I could handle 9 Chilli's and while I was taking this in the server was being so nice saying that he couldn't even handle 9 saying he appreciated me for letting him and the chef make spicy and more authentic curry's. Every single aspect of shiraz kamo is perfect the food is so delicious, the music playing in the background as you eat gives a really good atmosphere, the staff and service is so amazing.
