We hadn’t experienced Bistro Terroir before and we’d been recommended it by a friend. The menu is your standard French offerings; entrees of French Onion soup, escargot and a standout in the pork belly and scallop. All starters were beautifully presented. For mains we both chose the Steak Frites; as did most of the other diners. The steak is a Wagyu rump with a marble score of 7 topped with cafe de Paris butter and a range of mustards to choose from. Our desserts were Creme brûlée and Pomme Tarte Tatin, which were both delicious. The service was very good; the staff were very well acquainted with the menu and the wine list. I would have given Bistro Terroir five stars; however what let them down was the fact that the frites with the Steak frites were shoestring fries that were obviously frozen. At $55 my expectation is the frites would be hand-cut as is the case with Bouillon L'Entrecôte. Overall though, an enjoyable dining experience.

The steak frites can’t be missed, but from our limited taste obviously everything on the menu is blow your mind levels of incredible. Every dish had us grinning from ear to ear and the meal was the highlight of our trip to Daylesford. Our server’s were an absolute joy, the attention to detail presented in everything from the food to the atmosphere shows a true level of care and passion for the experience being served and makes you feel incredibly cozy and like you’re in the hands of the best kind of hospitality veterans from front to kitchen. Found this to be a much more wholesome experience compared “fine” dining restaurants you find within Melbourne’s CBD. A must visit if you’re ever in the area, and a reason to come back again and again!

We started with a beer and the averna amaro spritz and had a lovely Spanish red during dinner. We finished with a couple of cognacs to have with the dessert. The grilled cabbage, marrow and mussels I also forgot to take a photo of, which was a shame as it was superbly presented. If in Hepburn you must go to the surly goat!

The croquettes were EXTREMELY SALTY (you can see how much sea salt flakes on the croquettes) I tried my best to shake them off but it was still very salty. We paid extra to try the oysters.. the foam was bitter and tasted strange in general. We were so confused at the flavours presented and I saw the other table ordered the oysters as well. I was observing their reaction and I don’t think they were very impressed either. Then came the creamed celeriac. it didn’t taste bad but flavours were just flat. Main course lamb was cooked nicely but I was not a fan of the flavour of anchovy mixed with lemon. It came with super thick slices of sourdough (why? To soak up sauces?) however it was cold.. dessert was okay but not impressive Overall there was no balance of flavours at all for the dishes and we were so disappointed and confused by the high ratings Service was okay the waitress was friendly in general but did not ask us how the meal was at all and just left the bill at the end and quickly walked away For $98pp it was not worth and we have had much better with this price One of us was a chef in Melbourne CBD and he was also confused by the flavours presented that night. The menu changes every week (sometimes daily) and is entirely driven by the weather, seasonal produce as well as allowing the chefs to showcase their knowledge of cuisines from around the world. Silky smooth and the fermented kumquat offered a twist but with familiar citrus notes. Locally raised lamb done with preserved lemon and anchovies this was both gorgeous pretty but bangs of flavour. Incredibly tender, but the balance of the dish was spot on. Every touch point was amazing. We had the 10 course set menu with the wagyu course. I had the Japanese plum wine vodka martini and a dessert wine with dessert. We booked well in advance as they sell out quickly and spent a wonderful 4 hours there from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. What sets Kadota apart is how thoughtful their vegetarian menu is. I did feel like the duck was slightly overcooked. The glazed pumpkin, lentils, hazelnut , green olive tapenade $35 was way too salty not a well thought out dish that was enough for 2 people not great at all. The greens side $14 was baby food over cooked veg something your parents would do. So much garlic out of a jar and a watery mess. The chips rosemary salt with aioli $12 couldn’t taste the salt asked for extra salt chef apparently refused & put it on the side instead. The so called complimentary bread was good but tasted like a sweetbread. The state of the ice cold butter cut out of a block like know one cares slapped on a plate. IS IT SO HARD to take it out of the fridge 30 minutes prior and actually make it presentable. There was 1 chef standing there looking into the dining room like she owned it maybe the head chef or owner. I know 1 thing I will go elsewhere next time, a really underwhelming restaurant that needs to bring things back to basics before moving onto bigger and better things. The minimal decor & mood lighting were good though creating a romantic atmosphere, but a little soft music goes a long way.

We decided to try the chef menu. It came no were 3 entrees, 4 mains plus a salad and leek vinaigrette. Out of the 3 entrees, the ham hock terrine was super delicious. It was slow cooked in red wine, the rich flavor blended in so well and the chicken was cooked to perfection without the meat being too soft. The rare beef was pretty good too. The Cod Brandade seems a bit dry but tasted ok. We finished the meal with the sinful creme caramel. It texture was so smooth that it melt in the mouth. There was no fancy presentation but the food was really good. Advance booking is needed.

However having to navigate different dietary requirements and all the errands we had to run, I soon found out it was best for a nice Thursday night in with dietary friendly food. Sal was great in having to navigate that for me so I didn't have to do extra thinking on top of everything else I had to do. She was easy to deal with and nothing was too much trouble. We arrived back at our accommodation that night with an amazing spread of food already set up for us, which was such a nice surprise for my girls! Having dietary friendly options also meant that no one had to be excluded and we could all enjoy something together. Thank you, Sal! Your food was amazing and everyone raved about the Mexican chicken salad. Especially one of my bridesmaids who has never been a fan of salads or tomatoes for that matter. The food and staff were GREAT, clearly well trained but actually with a passion for what they are serving. Every dish was full of flavours and when served beautifully explained. The menu is structured so guests can choose either a three course at $135 or four course at $147. The menu selection is well balanced and very tasty! As a dessert fan I have to admit I was not inspired so went for three savoury courses. I felt the desserts were trying too hard instead just keeping it simple! The dining room is simple and with no padding to keep the noise down can prove a challenge if you are close to a group! Overall it’s very good and wonderful to see staff who loved their jobs and were enthusiastic about hospitality, but not cheap so more of a destination restaurant when visiting the region. The decor was great although the floors were oddly sticky and the service was okay but I was there for the brisket and the brisket was terrible. The food is okay tasting. The place is busy but the staff move everyone fast and they are polite. My issue is a common one. If you are going to make pies and serve them hot make a pie crust able to HOLD the pie together. Firstly as I was asking about vegan options, the woman serving me says in a defensive tone almost barking at me " we had a busy day so there's not much left!" Breakfast said it finished at 1:30pm, but they mentioned we could still order it (winning). We were the only ones in the cafe at the time. We ordered a veggie big breakfast and a lemon sugar pancakes. The veggie breakfast was unfortunately very bland, nothing really tasted seasoned- the eggs were nicely poached though and we actually weren’t served the baked beans that were listed on the menu. The pancakes came out and it took us a while to notice they probably weren’t the lemon sugar ones since they had ice cream and maple syrup with them. We flagged it with the staff and they changed it and apologised so that was all fine, unfortunately the pancakes were pretty flavourless without drowning them in lemon and sugar and they were burnt on the bottom so they were difficult to pull apart. They were spectacular. You can really taste the fresh ingredients used. The Mozzarella cheese was perfect on both pizzas. The cans of blood orange soda in the drinks case goes very nicely with the pizza on a warm night- or pick up a bottle of wine while you wait for your pizza.
