I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend to celebrate and had high expectations considering the high price and good reviews (including a Bib Gormand from Michelin). Ordered £120 worth of food, with most of it being mediocre/passable at best. All the food looked good but tastewise some were sorely lacking. The onion flatbread was good, the crispy lamb belly was great and the tempura broccoli was amazing. On the other hand the fried chicken massaman was chewy where fried chicken should be crunchy, the jersey chaat was tough and just tasted like boiled potatoes, the koftas were passable but I’ve had far better in York for far cheaper, the pork belly tasted like cheap Peking duck (even though the meat itself was obviously high quality). The mackerel pho was downright terrible; soft skin on the mackerel, watery, tasteless. Portion sizes were small, but this is to be expected in a fine dining establishment. The service itself was good, our server was attentive, but we were served food on chipped plates on three separate occasions (I only bothered taking photos the second and third time because I was so surprised at the low standard). Given the high price, this is unacceptable. The restaurant atmosphere was quite good generally, very modern, although some of the decor was very tacky ( gorilla head lightbulb, pig ). We've eaten in, and reviewed many restaurants, and Meltons is without a doubt one of the very best we've ever been to. Lucy squeezed us in on short notice and we're so glad she did. Situated a little out of town (10 minute walk from cliffords tower) just off bishopthorpe road. The restaurant is very small and intimate with only about 7 or 8 tables. The unpretentious front of the restaurant belies what is within. The menu is a fixed price (£85) for three courses. Both starters and mains have 3 choices and 4 on the deserts including the cheeseboard (no extra charge) wine list is comprehensive, but they offer a short wine menu too. Canapés, amuse bouche and a small selection of (gorgeous) breads and butters are included as are petit four with your bill. The amuse bouche & canopes were delightful, each dish brought to you is explained by the server, it is clear that there is a real pride in what they are doing, justifiably so. I struggled with my starter selection as none seemed to be that appealing, how wrong I was, I think the chef could delight you with your least favourite food. I selected the Mushroom tart and my wife chose the Orkney scallop, the other choice was artichoke. The mushroom tart was unlike anything I've ever tasted, it seemed to play hopscotch with my tastebuds, nothing short of astonishing, I'm betting that whatever you chose it would be a similar enlightening experience. My good lady was in raptures over her Orkney scallop and its accompanying sauce of Crown Prince Squash, Maple Verjus, Furikake. For Mains I selected the Halibut, the 'skin' of which is a Gruyère Crust, served with Chanterelles, Leeks & Salsify. Beautifully cooked, moist and delicious. Red deer was the choice of my good lady, served with Celeriac, Elderberry & Quince, she was again in foody heaven. To top off an amazing night we both selected the Blackberry & Meadowsweet Almond Cake, Yoghurt. Sounds simple? What arrives is anything but, there is clearly an immense amount of time and effort in providing this, and all the dishes we enjoyed. Service was above and beyond by the ladies, we felt truly looked after and had an unforgettable night for all the right reasons. If you are lucky enough to get a table don't hesitate. A generous portion of za'atar fried chicken to start which was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and delicious to taste all the way through! Green harissa paste and preserved lemon mayo drizzled over the top to complete the experience. Main was a super-tender, unctuous, beef cheek which tasted and felt wonderful to eat. Chef said the meat was marinated in double chicken stock and prepared with ras-el-hanout spices including cinnamon, cumin and ginger, plus loads of red wine. We sat out the back in their covered marquee area which was nice. All the staff we interacted with were really friendly. I had the Ham and cheese toastie which was really good. Loads of cheese, loads of ham, in lovely thick crispy bread which I think had been fried so was all lovely and greasy from the cheese. Said it was served with 'home fries' but was really small potatoes that were fried so were lovely and soft, however there really wasn't many of them. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. Our experience was no different other than the service was seemingly better during the meal. We knew it was a limited menu but this means each dish needs to be on form. I also had a glass of the Merlot this was nice. The toilets were well decorated and flushed effectively.

We tried here for the first time today, while on a short holiday to York. After reading lots of reviews we booked a table for midday - and I’m very glad we did as it filled up almost immediately upon sitting at our table and every table was taken by the time we left! The lady who showed us to our table was so friendly and helpful and the service from start to finish was perfect. She was lovely. Never able to resist a spicy pizza, we then both had the Calabrese pizza. This was just beautiful. A true, fresh, traditional Neapolitan pizza which had exactly the right amount of fresh and great quality toppings. Fresh, spicy and full of flavour. Cooked perfectly on a wonderful, fresh dough. Just wonderful. Service, atmosphere and value were all perfect and we will definitely return when we are next in York. I came here last weekend with my friends and the staff here were so incredibly lovely and welcoming, they made us feel right at home. The restaurant is quite small and intimate, but this is something I personally love and look out for when I’m choosing where I want to eat! The interior is laden with charming Italian style paintings and mosaics, even on the tables where you are eating (which I adored!). If you’re seated by the windows you have a great view of the York streets. I ordered a Capricciosa pizza which had olives, ham and artichokes, with my friends ordering pizzas such as the La Norma, Provola and Napoletana. We all thought the taste and quality of the pizzas were top class, and actually all didn’t speak for the first 15 minutes of tucking into our pizzas as they were that good! The only small** thing I would say that would make the experience here even better would be if the range of teas was more extensive!! I know this is a pizza restaurant so maybe isn’t the top of their priorities but I would have loved to have an Earl Grey tea or something like that, especially as I don’t like carbonated drinks and didn’t fancy a juice or alcohol! This is more my preference though and is no slight to the restaurant! The last thing I would say is that even though we had a 1hr 45 reservation slot and one of my friends was running late, we did not feel rushed at all by the staff. This was greatly appreciated as I have often been to places where they can be borderline rude in trying to get you to hurry up and leave the establishment but we all felt totally relaxed and un-pressured here. Overall, I would highly recommend trying Cresci out for a truly authentic Italian experience in York. The prices are great for the quality of the food you’re getting, it’s located in a great spot, the staff are attentive and friendly and the choice of pizzas is extensive! The people in there were so kind and the didn't rush us to order. We took my mother in law with us who is vegetarian so we got to try both options this time. They almost had 10 veg options on there menu. We had two starters which was so authentic and flavourful 😋. Fallowed by we had 3 pizzas all three were so good it felt the same way we had it in Naples. It was not so heavy and the tomatoes sauce felt authentic too. We ended up with tiramisu which was average yet good 😊👍🏻. Overall it was a very good experience I would definitely recommend this place.

Their enthusiasm was excellent and earnt their wages for sure. Wine pairing is actually good value (unfortunately this is the only part of the experience that justified the spend). The wine was top, so no problem there but when you look at other options in York, it's really not worth the spend. Onto the food. Id love to say it was knock out and the best, if not the best, meal we've had but it just wasn't. At the price point (£650 for wine pairing with added course and service for two) I can name 10 other restaurants in York that you can go to on the fine dining level that outshine in. None of the dishes had a "star" quality or power you'd associate with something in the Michelin world. It is next to Betty's tea rooms. The lady who greeted us in The Ivy was very welcoming. She took our bags and our coats to keep in the cloakroom and gave us a ticket to get them back when we left. Had reserved in advance and was really excited about this evening but maybe too much! There was no warm welcome or offer to take our coats. Table was ready & clean on the long sofa infront of the bar. Ordered duck pate & bruschetta which was very quick to arrive but bread was not crispy bruschetta it was regular square slice of thick sliced loaf toasted & cut into two triangles wrapped in a napkin. We were hungry so we ate it or half slice of toast for me, pate portion was quite generous and VERY filling perhaps next time one portion could be shared between two. Unfortunately my breadcrumbed chicken main was very dry and not much flavour so I only ate about third and left it. My partner he enjoyed his peppercorn steak. Bottle of Wine was lovely but not left at your table so we waited a few times for a top up. Bill was £112 which included discretionary service charge which i asked for it to be removed & tipped the waitress ourselves. All in all left feeling very underwhelmed our special treat wasn't really all that special after all will try Miller & Carter again when we return to race day.

I'm not kidding, this is a must-go place. Definitely reasonably priced for the quality you get and drinks very cheap too. We had a couple of starters (chicken 65 and the vada) and we had a non-Veg thali that was just amazing. Place was not full and yet we waited 20 mins after being sat at a wobbly table for me to then have to ask if we could order a drink. We were not near any windows so could not see the beautiful views we had paid to see. This felt like any other restaurant at this point. Be warned when booking the rooftop bar you will inevitably be seated in this room as it acted as a holding room for when you table is actually ready. We saw multiple groups of people with bookings be sat in this room and then escorted to the rooftop when their table was ready. Large very smart restaurant with a nice menu. We had the homemade bread basket to share for our starter which was really good. Really fresh warm bread (a few different types) with 2 different types of butter. For my main I got the beef burger. The taste of the meat was really good but it had a soft mincy texture (maybe should have been grilled a bit more?). Served in a really nice bun with plenty of cheese and a good sauce. The service was all very friendly and efficient. We had all eaten plenty with the bread and the mains so couldn't manage desserts. But it's unusual for me to find many desserts I would want in a restaurant and there was a few that sounded really good (and very different to other restaurants). The atmosphere is probably the best thing here. Dark with above lighting creates a nice space to dine or meet with a partner. Drinks were very good - wine and cocktails. Service was excellent 👌. As well as the incredible selection of cask & keg, they had Whitby Rum on the shelf. No generic spirits here! Oh and the soundtrack… The bar crew were playing what they like. The service was excellent - it's so nice to be waited on properly. I'd been craving soup so my choice of starter was easy, it was a delicious lentil soup served with a huge hunk of bread with lashings of a gorgeous herb butter which I tried to leave as I didnt want to fill up on bread before my main which was the biggest ceasar salad I have ever had! Interior looked nicely decorated with a genuinely cosy atmosphere. Server was friendly and attentive though the service itself was a bit slow considering that things did not seem very busy. The food when it arrived was colorful, vibrant, fresh looking and followed up on the visual promises it made with the flavors it provided. Absolutely delicious. Not so great for me was the fact that Bill's is cashless. Check out the smallprint (literally!) on the bottom right hand corner of the front of your menu. As a business decision I always kind of feel this kind of decision is not taken for the benefit of the customer, but so the business can save itself the inconvenience of having to handle cash. Afternoon tea at the grand hotel should have been a really special experience. When we arrived we were very impressed. We were welcomed in a beautiful building by a staff member dressed in top hat and tails, then we were ushered into what felt like the beck room of the hotel for afternoon tea. So many types of bao as well - most of them sounding delicious. Decided to go. The restaurant itself is located upstairs in Brew York, and shares the tap room - a large hall with bench seating. Very Germanic. Stout. You order beers from the bar - the list of beers on order is large and changes all the time. I like lager-types, so the selection of those is a bit less, btu still good - the beer on this occasion was a Mittel Pils, from Pivovar. I liked this system and the prices for the beer were decent. Settled for a Korean pulled pork bao and a beef bulgogi brisket bao, with a side of chicken gyoza. I was not disappointed - the bao were large and fulsome, packed with meat and full of flavour. I could barely finish my gyoza and was glad I hadn’t also ordered the loaded chips that I had been eyeing… 😃 Food was in fact so good I went back two days later and had two more bao - another pulled pork and a fried chicken this time. The chicken was crisp and moreish. Overall superb and well worth a visit - if I lived in York I would be here weekly for at least one bao. Definitely pencil in a visit here. I think the food here would work well for lunch as well as in the evening.

Last night, we ate at the Pearly Cow and it was the first time where everything was perfect. We both have backgrounds in hospitality management and know that we have high expectations! The cocktails were perfectly made, the flavour and combinations of the food were fabulous and that sticky toffee soufflé was incredible. Huge thank you to the manageress (curly hair, young) who was great with her team, chatty but professional and just great. The young man that also served us was new but very lovely. We cannot wait to return and will be booking a hotel stay for sure😊 If you are after an incredible dinner or even just small plates and drinks, you won’t regret coming here.

Amuse bouche of the North Sea Oysters which were fresh and delicious presented impeccably. Starter of Tiger Prawns with orange lettuce and pickled beetroot, which was a delight and a playful change with the mild citrus and beets mixing amazingly well. All guests had the beef roast which was cooked to perfection and every mouthful bursting with flavour. They claim the best roast in Yorkshire….. they’re probably right even the drinks were too drawer. Complimented perfectly by the service staff who were warm welcoming interested without being cloying. I will 100% visit this place again and it’s well worth a 5* review Thank you to the whole team
