I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend to celebrate and had high expectations considering the high price and good reviews (including a Bib Gormand from Michelin). Ordered £120 worth of food, with most of it being mediocre/passable at best. All the food looked good but tastewise some were sorely lacking. The onion flatbread was good, the crispy lamb belly was great and the tempura broccoli was amazing. On the other hand the fried chicken massaman was chewy where fried chicken should be crunchy, the jersey chaat was tough and just tasted like boiled potatoes, the koftas were passable but I’ve had far better in York for far cheaper, the pork belly tasted like cheap Peking duck (even though the meat itself was obviously high quality). The mackerel pho was downright terrible; soft skin on the mackerel, watery, tasteless. Portion sizes were small, but this is to be expected in a fine dining establishment. The service itself was good, our server was attentive, but we were served food on chipped plates on three separate occasions (I only bothered taking photos the second and third time because I was so surprised at the low standard). Given the high price, this is unacceptable. The restaurant atmosphere was quite good generally, very modern, although some of the decor was very tacky ( gorilla head lightbulb, pig ). A generous portion of za'atar fried chicken to start which was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and delicious to taste all the way through! Chef said the meat was marinated in double chicken stock and prepared with ras-el-hanout spices including cinnamon, cumin and ginger, plus loads of red wine. We sat out the back in their covered marquee area which was nice. All the staff we interacted with were really friendly. I had the Ham and cheese toastie which was really good. Loads of cheese, loads of ham, in lovely thick crispy bread which I think had been fried so was all lovely and greasy from the cheese. Said it was served with 'home fries' but was really small potatoes that were fried so were lovely and soft, however there really wasn't many of them. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. The food choice is overwhelming - not just bao, but also gyoza, ramen, rice bowls, fried chicken and more. I wanted to try it all. Settled for a Korean pulled pork bao and a beef bulgogi brisket bao, with a side of chicken gyoza. I was not disappointed - the bao were large and fulsome, packed with meat and full of flavour. I could barely finish my gyoza and was glad I hadn’t also ordered the loaded chips that I had been eyeing… 😃 Food was in fact so good I went back two days later and had two more bao - another pulled pork and a fried chicken this time. I agreed to provide a ‘cheese cake’ for my Niece’s wedding celebrations. She is located in North Yorkshire, but a series of celebration events were scheduled to take place in Cornwall. I found Love Cheese via online search and was impressed by their offering and testimonials. The brief was to prioritise Yorkshire/Cornish/English cheeses but the couple had no set ideas beyond this, as their previous experience was primarily supermarket cheese. An exceptional cheese tasting run by Condi not only identified the 7 cheeses for the ‘cake’, but also inspired what I believe will be a lifelong love of artisan cheeses for them both. Cheeses, crackers and chutney were ordered and packaged ready for collection in advance of the long trip to the SW. The wedding celebration events were in a relaxed house party format over a couple of days, the cheeses were presented as a stack and separate displays and formed a central part of a relaxed food offering and complemented the floral and rustic style perfectly. Jordan, Condi and the rest of the Love Cheese team are definitely cheese experts and provided an exceptional level of service. On this occasion, I opted for the excellent scalda n’duja to start – this is a traditional spreadable spiced sausage (served sitting on a burner) served with soft cheese and delicious crusty bread. This is a big portion and packed with flavour. Another good option I’ve had before is the arancini, which are served with a thick and rich cheese sauce. Beautiful. For a main, the cannelloni, filled with chicken and spinach and served with cheese and tomato sauces – this is also very rich. (Special mention also to the pasta with sausage and mushroom and the chicken roulade, which are both excellent options). Whenever I come here, I regret not having a bigger appetite, as there’s always more than one thing that I want to try… There is a dessert menu, but for me the standout here is and always has been the limoncello (yes, that is with lemon) tiramisu – this is a generous portion with mascarpone and a good hit of limoncello. This truly is ‘the’ pudding and worthy of celebration. Also the staff there tried overcharging us using their bad English as a cover and making us calculate all the prices ourselves. Once we checked the bill we realized that they tried charging us 20 pound more than what we paid! They even tried to make one of us pay 3 pounds for the glass of milk he needed to be able to eat his dish. Because of how long this all took (about 20 min) most of us missed their busses right after.
