Out of the three manors I loved this one the most! I can't even express how wonderful it was to have a walk there. It's like being in one of the Russian fairy tales. As soon as you see the place you realize where Pushkin got his inspiration from. Make sure to visit the place when it's warm and sunny and don't forget to bring some mosquito spray with you.

(Translated by Google) Located in a beautiful location, wonderful view of the city. A beautiful place for a walk. The modern appearance of the monastery is a complex of buildings surrounded by an old stone fence. You can get inside through one of two gates: Pyatnitsky, near which stood the now destroyed church of the same name, and Anastasyevsky, near which there was a chapel of the same name (also no longer existing). Now you can see a small stone gatekeeper. Near the Pyatnitsky (or Holy) Gate there is the house of the governor of the early 20th century. Another gate named after the lost church today, Nikolsky, connects the holy and trading courtyards of the monastery. The main attractions of the monastery are the Assumption Cathedral and the Hannibal-Pushkin family tomb. In the aisle of the first, a coffin with Pushkin’s body was placed on the eve of the funeral service. The name of A. S. Pushkin, who lived in Mikhailovskoye, is closely connected with the monastery, which he often visited. While working on Boris Godunov, the poet spent a lot of time in the monastery archives, studying ancient chronicles and historical works in order to make his drama as authentic as possible. In addition, the monastery hosted fairs that were famous throughout the area, where the poet also often visited in search of types.

(Translated by Google) On the territory of the monastery there is a fragment of a bell, a belfry and the main attraction - the Pushkin necropolis and the grave of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. Children are often brought here on excursions, in whole buses... We just found ourselves in such a period and this, of course, is not very good, but what can you do, everyone wants to touch the great and eternal... (Original) На территории монастыря находится осколок колокола, звонница и главная достопримечательность - некрополь Пушкиных и могила Александра Сергеевича Пушкина. Holy Dormition Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
15th-century place of Orthodox worship, one of very few in Russia to have never been closed.
There are ten churches in the monastery. It is in the oldest gold-domed Dormition church that one can see and venerate the miracle-working icon of the Dormition of the Most Pure Mother of God and the relics of the Holy Martyr Cornelius. Currently the monastic community numbers over 90. Fantastic place to visit!
Oleg S — Google review
Amazing place, even if some churches were closed
Jean-Francois L — Google review
If you're a religious person or a big fan of nature, than you will probably like this place. If not, I don't think, you're going to be impressed. The walls of the fortress are ancient and massive. You can walk near them and enjoy the atmosphere. The church is yet small and not really beautiful. When I was here the main church was closed for cleaning.

Rotko muzejs

Art museum
Museums
Art Galleries
Displays of contemporary paintings, ceramics & photos, plus original works by Latvian-born Rothko.
If you are in Daugavpils, this is almost a must-visit place. The Rotko exhibition itself is in a small room only, with around 5 artwork you can really see. But other exhibitions in the museum are really attractive as well, including paintings from local and overseas artists. Many of them are temporary exhibitions so chances are next time when I come I will see other artwork in the museum. This time I am lucky enough to see the artwork from Jekaterina Griskjane and Ernesto Morales. I really enjoy it.
Stefan T — Google review
A unique and inspiring place to experience Mark Rothko’s art in his homeland. The museum is beautifully designed, calm, and welcoming, with thoughtful exhibitions that give both context and space for reflection. A true cultural gem in Latvia and well worth a visit!
Jete M — Google review
What a fabulous art gallery! All wonderfully curated in an amazing art space. There's no need for to write about Rothko here. Other works in the exhibitions were various and interesting - well chosen to offer a broad combination of abstract art and indeed ceramics under a single awe inspiring roof. This place is a singularity in Europe. Don't forget the separate ceramics exhibition space in the building opposite. Another rare experience!
P. F — Google review
I was willing to come here for a long time and took it as a great opportunity to admire the works, but museum got me disappointed. Despite having a watcher guard in every room, i cannot even lean forward to admire the technique and brushstrokes of Rothko himself. In this case - what is the idea? I can just search these works in google and take a look. But the works of other artists are marvelous though - very much worth visiting
Mārīte — Google review
Very limited (close to non existent - 6 painting ) Rothko collection. Nice permanente exhibition, worthy to visit only if you are already in Daugavpils.
Tony B — Google review
Excellent exhibits. Not much Rothko unfortunately. Other artists paintings were great. Bit expensive to go in. €10 each.
Patrick M — Google review

Daugavpils Fortress

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Part-preserved bastion fort dating from the 19th century & home to the Mark Rothko Art Center.
Impressive military and cultural heritage site with various museums about art, history, nature and industry. Besides being completed as the last bastion type Fortress it has also planning of the Ideal city! Recommend visiting visitor centre for information. This place holds a lot of surprising facts and traces of global events, which might not be easy to see without a guide. Luckily you can order a guided tour there in the visitor's centre, most of the workers there are historians, or simply explore the exhibition of the visitor's centre and ask questions to the employees on spot without leaving the centre.
Maris G — Google review
The Daugavpils Fortress is an impressive fortress. The fortress is placed outside of Daugavpils. The fortress has had various purposes since 1810. Both Napoleon, World War 2 and during the Soviet era were involved with the Daugavpils Fortress. Today the fortress is pretty much run down. The best place is the Nicholas Gate and the buildings where the art museum is. We were told by some very nice historians by the Nicholas Gate that because we were visiting during the winter most of the museums were closed. Around the fortress a lot of ruins can be seen from the fortress wall. It's a fun area to explore and It's definitely worth a visit!
Simon G — Google review
Although it is supposed to be a popular tourist destination, we felt like intruders in a closed community. Visited a local store but the lady behind the counter was not welcoming at all. She seemed annoyed that we came in, although we were polite and nice to her. We enjoyed only the graffiti exhibition and cannons, also the Alexander's gate is moderately interesting. Probably would be more interesting if we would visit the museums. Maybe other time!
Austra Ā — Google review
Good to spend an hour or so, the area in itself is tourist friendly, with museums and coffee shops around.
Stefan T — Google review
Big, bigger, biggest! The history of the Daugavpils Fortress actually begins in 1772 with the First Partition of Poland, when Dyneburg (Polish for Daugavpils) fell into Russian hands and became a border town. Although the Second and Third Partitions of Poland moved the border many kilometers away from Dyneburg, the Napoleonic Wars forced Tsar Alexander I to order the construction of a Dyneburg Fortress in 1810. After a slow start and a revision of the plans, some 10,000 workers built a huge Vauban fortress. In 1812, part of Napoleon's Grande Armée attacked the still unfinished fortress. The garrison already stationed there, which had safely retreated behind the Western Dvina, managed to repel the French attacks with artillery fire. The construction of the fortress lasted until 1878, partly due to the invasion of Napoleon, long delays, floods and a slow work pace. Nevertheless, the immense fortress (area = ±2 km2) is a modern and important military stronghold. During the first Latvian independence (1920-1940), the Daugavpils Fort became the base of the Latvian army. After the fortress was captured by the Germans during WWII, they established the POW camp Stalag 340 here. From 1948 to 1993, the fortress was home to the Daugavpils Higher School of Military Aircraft Engineering, but after the regained Latvian independence, the Daugavpils Fort lost its military function. As of 2025, parts of the fortress have been restored, several museums are located there (including the Mark Rothko Art Center) and people live there. Daugavpils Fortress, the best preserved early 19th century citadel in Northern Europe, is definitely worth an (extended) visit!
Koen — Google review
The fortress is partially restored, but even only for a walk it's an interesting place, soaked with history.
MM — Google review
Beatiful and historic place. Has remainings of the Fortress and some other old buildings. Nice walk around, although why only 4 stars. Despite having a museum of art, medicine, and war, it feels like it hasn't been used to its full potential. Some work needs to be done on some of the old buildings which are in ruins, which could be used for other cultural or entertaining purposes. Ofcourse it might also be a slight mood killer that it has local residents sharing the routes and part of the grounds of the Fortress. Nevertheless worth your visitx entry into the inside of the fortnerr is free, you can just come in. Hope to see see some potential future development!

Treetop walking path and information centre

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tree-canopy trail complex with a walkway, an information center & a 34-m. observation tower.
A really nice experience – walking among the treetops offers a unique and peaceful perspective on the forest. A fun and relaxing activity, perfect for nature lovers looking for something a bit different.
I M — Google review
I’ve visited this place a few times now, the tree top walk and viewing platform are great fun. The view from the viewing platform is great, but a word of warning the floor is constructed from metal grates so you can see though it - you’ll need a head for heights. During the summer there can be lots of mosquitoes as I found out, I’d recommend wearing trousers! Well worth a visit.
Oliver C — Google review
It's a great family activity. Walking above the trees is a very interesting experience. After the trail, there are two cafes with a fairly wide selection of food, which is also nice.
Andrey P — Google review
The Tree Top Walking Path offers a unique and refreshing experience walking among the treetops with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding forest. The path is mostly flat and accessible, making it suitable for all ages. The highlight is the observation tower with breathtaking vistas and a fun 55-meter tunnel slide for some added adventure. The adjacent Adventure Forest playground is perfect for families, with plenty of activities for kids. The staff are friendly, and the facilities, including clean toilets, are well maintained. It's a peaceful nature escape with interesting birdwatching opportunities and beautiful seasonal colors, especially in autumn. A small entry fee applies, but the experience is well worth it. Highly recommended for nature lovers and families alike!

Nice surroundings in the middle of the national park but I expected longer treetrop walking path. We were in and out in about 10-15minutes (including going to the top of the lookout tower). The information center is quite nice and the people who work there are even nicer!

Gediminas Castle

Mentioned on
+108 other lists
History museum
Museums
Gediminas Castle Tower, a 3-story brick tower dating back to the 15th century, offers visitors an impressive 360-degree panorama of Vilnius from the top of Gediminas Hill. Before taking in the breathtaking views, visitors can explore an exhibition inside the tower that delves into the history of Vilnius as the political center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The views from the top of the tower and the castle walls are gorgeous. Definitely worth the 2 euros for the one way funicular ride. The tower itself has a small museum inside. The 8 euros for entry are more for the unobstructed city views at the top of the tower from the than the exhibits. But they are instructive and geared towards families. In summary, it's best way to either start or finish your day in Vilnius.
Eric F — Google review
Free to walk up to and around the grounds for a fantastic view but you have to pay for the tower. Be careful of the stones going up to the castle or you can take the funicular for 3EUR return. Would highly recommend to visit for the beautiful scenes!
Yeesh R — Google review
Did a walk up because the funicular was closed on a sunday. It's not too bad. Saw little children hopping up and many old couples doing it too. Beautiful views. Totally worth the climb.
Paul T — Google review
Gediminas Tower offers one of the best panoramic views of Vilnius. The climb up the hill is short but rewarding, and the tower’s small museum gives a clear overview of Lithuania’s medieval history. The restored structure is simple yet symbolic, standing proudly above the city. It can get windy and crowded, but the scenery makes it absolutely worth the visit.
Dani B — Google review
Visiting Gediminas Hill was a memorable experience, worth every step. The view from the top is breathtaking, and the tower itself is a reminder of Vilnius’ roots and legends. Helpful tips for tourists: • 🚶‍♂️ The funicular is currently out of service, so you have to climb on foot. The path is steep – wear comfortable shoes. • ⏰ Best time to go is before sunset, when the city is painted in warm colors. • 🎟️ Inside the tower, there’s a museum about the history of Vilnius castles. • 👨‍👩‍👧 The climb may be challenging for kids, but the experience is rewarding. • 📸 Don’t forget your camera – the panoramic views are among the best in Vilnius.
Oksana O — Google review
Visited on our day trip to Vilnius. There was no funicular working on the day which was limiting for some visiting. The path up is part cobble (very uneven) and wooden stairs so while the renovation is ongoing if you have mobility issues it may not be for you(September25). Good Views of the city. €8 to enter. Gediminas Castle is a great place to visit in Vilnius. It’s on a hill, and from the top, you get an amazing view of the whole city, especially at sunset. You can walk up or take the funicular if you don’t want to climb. The tower has a small museum inside where you can learn a bit about Lithuania’s history. It’s not very big. The best part is definitely the view, it’s perfect for photos and just relaxing for a while. If you’re in Vilnius, this is one of the top spots to see!

St. Anne's Church, also known as Santa Ana Church, is a striking example of Gothic architecture located in the old city of Vilnius, Lithuania. Built in 1581, this Roman Catholic church is renowned for its intricate red brick structure and complex design. The building features two tall towers and numerous small spires, creating a perfect Gothic complex style. The exterior walls alone used 33 different shapes of bricks, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its construction.
Magnificent looking building in red stone with exceptional architecture. The church glows in sunlight wonderful landmark with nice garden surroundings.

St. Anne’s Church is truly beautiful and charming. The traditional old architecture is breathtaking, with its rich history reflected in every detail. Inside, the wonderful woodworking on the furniture adds warmth and authenticity to the atmosphere, making it a peaceful and inspiring place to visit. A must-see for anyone who appreciates historic architecture and craftsmanship.

St Anne’s Church is the most beautiful and famous structure in Vilnius. It was constructed during 1495-1500 at Vilnius old town. The intricate design of the church makes it an outstanding piece of architecture. The exterior of the church has remained almost unchanged, though the interior has been repaired many times. The interiors of the church feature unique paintings and decorative wood carvings that are truly beautiful. Enjoyed visiting the church very much.
Soudamini M — Google review
Today is Easter and we went into the Church of St. Anne. According to legend, Napoleon would like to place it on the palm of his hand and transfer it to Paris. But the church in the style of "Flamboyant Gothic" still decorates our city. This small and very beautiful church is often open on church holidays. And whenever we go in, we see a haze. Maybe because of this smoke, it has a light, airy atmosphere.

One of the most breathtaking sights in Vilna. Definitely in the top 5 most beautiful churches I've ever seen. A must to visit if you're in town.

One of the most impressive churches I’ve seen from an architectural point of view. Truly magnificent both outside and inside. Take a moment to admire it from the park on the other side of the street before entering through the main gate into the main church. A must see in Vilnius.
Gaia P — Google review
One of the most beautiful and epic churches I've been. Interestingly enough it has a carving of the Godess Ishtar. Which is a pagan symbol.
Maria-Christina S — Google review
This Late Gothic Church uses 33 profiles of bricks in the faccade. The History does not say it but I wonder if 33 profiles are used to represent that Christ was 33 when he was crucified. Napolen destroyed the church in battles of 1812 and was rebuilt in 19th century with a belfry of NeoGoghic style. The Soviets used it as storage and offices. Even do, the interior was revitalized in late 1990s by the monks, and the chapel is in Benedictine monk honor. We spent over an hour exploring, including a secret room with frescos and wood works under reconstruction. Take photos of the frescos that were painted over by the Soviets as the trues colors come out on photos.

Vilnius Cathedral is a stunning Roman Catholic cathedral located on the site of an ancient pagan temple, featuring 11 side chapels. It's a prominent stop on walking tours through Vilnius' Old Town, offering visitors a glimpse of the city's main attractions like Town Hall Square, St Annes Church, and Uzupis neighborhood. The cathedral's grandeur has been likened to a mix of Greek temple and Polish civic theatre.
Located in the heart of Vilnius Old Town, the cathedral is a stunning landmark worth visiting. Although there was some construction during our visit, which partially obstructed the view, its beauty still stood out. The surrounding area is lively, with charming restaurants, cafes, and shops just a short walk away—perfect for spending a relaxing afternoon exploring.

The Vilnius Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus (Vilniaus arkikatedra) is Lithuania's main Catholic shrine and a key national symbol. Architecture: The current structure is a stunning example of Neoclassical style, designed by Laurynas Gucevičius in the late 18th century, but it incorporates elements from earlier Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque rebuilds. Key Feature: Inside is the magnificent St. Casimir's Chapel, which holds the remains of Lithuania's patron saint. Bell Tower: The free-standing Bell Tower was once a defensive tower of the city's castle. The cathedral and its tower are prominently located in Cathedral Square.

Vilnius Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus, is one of the most striking landmarks in Lithuania’s capital. Standing proudly at the heart of Vilnius Old Town, it’s not just a place of worship but a symbol of national pride and resilience. The first thing that catches your eye is its grand neoclassical façade — white columns, statues of saints above the entrance, and the separate bell tower that dominates Cathedral Square. The architecture feels more like a Greek temple than a traditional church, which makes it truly unique among European cathedrals. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and reverent. The high vaulted ceilings, intricate chapels, and beautifully restored artwork reflect centuries of faith and craftsmanship. One of the most fascinating parts is the crypt, which holds tombs of Lithuanian nobles and historical figures, adding a sense of mystery and depth to the visit. The surrounding courtyard and square are just as impressive. It’s a large open space where locals and tourists mingle, street musicians play, and people sit by the fountains or simply take in the view of Gediminas Hill in the background. Whether you visit by day or night, the cathedral and its surroundings capture the spirit of Vilnius — elegant, historical, and full of quiet charm.

Quite serene and powerful atmosphere. Loved the friendly nature of people around the cathedral. Got offered free friendship bracelets by some children visiting with their teachers.

The Vlinius Cathedral is jaw dropping. You don't need tickets. The building is so stunning, just the exterior is worth the trip (by all means, go inside, but I'm just saying it's a very impressive building). Do not miss out. Budget some time to see the Vilnius Cathedral when visiting.

Vilnius Cathedral is a striking landmark, blending elegance and simplicity. Its bright, neoclassical façade stands out in the main square, while the interior feels spacious and serene. Highlights include the stunning Chapels of St. Casimir and the crypts. It’s an essential stop for understanding the city’s religious and cultural heritage, and a peaceful place to pause while exploring the Old Town

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is housed in a former KGB headquarters and prison, showcasing the resilience of the Lithuanian people during the Nazi and Soviet occupations. The museum provides insight into the country's military history, featuring exhibits and old combat equipment. It offers visitors a chance to learn about the fierce resistance of Lithuanians throughout the 20th century, honoring those who lost their lives in this historic struggle.
This was a very heavy experience. They do not sugar-coat the atrocities. This museum has so much information and history. I HIGHLY recommend buying the regular ticket AND the audio tour. If you don’t have it, it’s too much to read. There are hundreds of things to learn about and read, so the audio is awesome. They give you the player and the headphones, so don’t worry about bringing anything. Going through the entire museum took us 3.5 hours and we could have gone longer but we hadn’t eaten yet and were very hungry. The audio tour also tells you a bit more information than just reading the English signage. I’ve been quite a few places in Vilnius and this is the one place I think EVERYONE should go. Please be respectful while you’re there and try to learn as much as you can.

From my personal interest, this is one of the most fascinating museums I've ever visited. A building which was both a "home" for the Gestapo and the KGB, it is now a museum which tells the story of the people of Lithuania during decades of occupation, repression and death. The most eerie parts are the corridors of the prison cells and the execution chamber. I truly recommend this museum for anyone visiting Vilnius
Guy A — Google review
Everyone who goes to Vilnius should go to this museum... as a reminder of the suffering of the Lithuanian people in their struggle for independence and freedom. Be prepared though... it is very sad and some of the information was shocking. But it's a must do if you're visiting Vilnius.

This place is practically living history. I assume some of the people who worked here are still living. It's a pretty sinister place. People can really think of ways to make the lives of others miserable if they don't conform to their rules. It makes me think that humanity should be doomed. All of the material is presented in Lithuanian and English.
Kirstjen L — Google review
A sobering account of Soviet oppression at a telling moment in modern times. This museum is a converted former KGB prison, with detailed explanation of the horrors of incarceration and what it feels like to be culturally and politically suppressed by an aggressive hostile country. It recounts the resistance efforts of ordinary Lithuanians in the face of insurmountable odds, and reveals their heroism even in the bleakest of times.
NickyC67 — Google review
Somber and very sobering. A must see and visit place to understand the Baltic States' history and current situation. Very detailed history of the KGB and the oppression of the Lithuanian people. It's a listed building and kept as much as it was when Vilnius returned to an independent state. Incredible lower level prison cells and interrogation rooms of political prisoners. There is an execution room but we could only last 30 seconds in there as it was to upsetting. We were the only ones there. Afterwards we went to see the names carved in the stone bricks at the front of the building. Emotional and enlightening visit.

Trakai Island Castle is a picturesque turreted castle situated on a serene island in Lake Galve, just off the coast of Trakai. Dating back to the 14th century, this Gothic castle offers visitors a glimpse into Lithuania's rich history and culture. Connected to the mainland by a charming footbridge, the castle houses the impressive Trakai History Museum, showcasing an array of artifacts including chainmail, medieval weapons, embroidery, and glassware.
A Trip Back in Time at Trakai Castle! Wow, what an incredible place! If you want to feel like you’ve stepped straight into a fairytale, you absolutely have to visit Trakai Castle. The whole experience starts with a walk across a wooden bridge over the lake, and the view of the majestic red-brick towers is just breathtaking. From the moment you arrive, you get this amazing medieval feeling. We had the best time exploring the cobblestone courtyard, climbing the wooden stairs, and peeking into the old halls. You can almost hear the echoes of knights and dukes from centuries ago! The museum inside is really well done and brings the castle's fascinating history to life. It truly feels like a journey back to the 15th century. Just a friendly heads-up, the castle is currently undergoing some important restoration work to keep it looking fantastic for years to come. While this means some areas might be sectioned off, it honestly didn't affect our visit. There is still so much to see and explore, and the atmosphere is completely magical. Don't let the ongoing work put you off! This place is 100% worth the visit for its stunning beauty and incredible historical vibe. We absolutely loved it!
Kestas G — Google review
Visiting Trakai Island Castle was like stepping into a living piece of Lithuanian history. The moment you cross the wooden bridge over Lake Galvė, the red-brick towers appear in full majesty — calm, proud, and full of stories. Inside, each hall has its own character: the Grand Duke’s chamber feels royal and atmospheric, the armory impresses with real swords and armor, and the exhibition about Vytautas the Great brings the medieval world to life. I loved how well-preserved everything is — you can almost imagine knights, musicians, and nobles walking through these halls centuries ago. Helpful Tips for Visitors: Arrive early, especially on weekends — it gets crowded quickly. Book tickets online in advance to skip the queue. Take a guided tour or audio guide — it adds so much depth to the visit. Bring cash for local shops or snacks — not all vendors accept cards. Don’t miss the inner courtyard and lake views — perfect for photos. Families with kids should visit the dungeon and towers — they’re always a hit! After the castle, try the legendary kibinai at “Senoji Kibininė” nearby — the perfect finish to your day. Trakai Castle isn’t just a tourist attraction — it’s a real time machine that lets you feel the spirit of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A must-see for anyone who loves history, architecture, or simply beautiful places that make you pause and breathe in the past.

Stunning castle in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. We were lucky with the weather as it had been raining all day the previous day. The restauration of the castle is amazing and still ongoing. Certain areas were closed because of that and because we visited out of season. But still lots to see with a huge number of period artefacts. Gives you an idea of how important trade was. Tranquil setting with nice walks in the area. Not many visitors but I can imagine it gets very busy in Summer. Good restaurants around on the lake side leading to the castle. It's a good walk from the station, about 3km, but beautiful along the lakes. The whole experience was magnificent and the on site toilets were immaculate. Access for wheelchair users a bit tricky and you need to be fairly sure footed due to the old cobbled roads and paths. But what a place. Return rail ticket from Vilnius was about €6.

A very cool medieval castle and a museum! Despite some rain and October gloomy weather, we had a great time exploring the castle. The grey skies gave the whole location a nice vibe, and the forest and lake surrounding the castle looked stunning.

Had an lovely experience visiting Trakai. Nestled in nature, the entire environment is incredibly calming and beautiful. The colorful houses and the vibrant surroundings make it a truly picturesque destination. The peaceful ambiance, especially with water all around, adds to the tranquility. And of course, if you visit, you absolutely must try the kibinai, a delicious local treat that adds an authentic touch. Absolutely worth the trip!

I visited Trakai Castle in October, and it was absolutely stunning. The autumn colors made the entire island look like something out of a fairy tale — golden leaves reflecting on the calm lake, with the red brick walls of the castle standing proudly in the middle. The weather was cool but pleasant, perfect for exploring without crowds. The walk across the wooden bridge to the castle is beautiful and gives you plenty of photo opportunities. Inside, the museum is well-organized, with interesting exhibits about Lithuanian history, the Grand Dukes, and medieval life. There’s also a sense of calm and history that you can really feel as you wander through the courtyards and towers. Even though some areas felt a bit touristy (like the souvenir stalls near the entrance), it didn’t take away from the experience. I’d recommend stopping at one of the nearby cafés to try kibinai, the local pastry — warm and delicious on a chilly autumn day. Overall: A must-visit if you’re in Lithuania. Trakai Castle in autumn is simply magical — peaceful, picturesque, and full of history.

We visited a beautiful, photogenic castle situated on an island surrounded by water. During our visit, a portion of the castle was closed for renovation, which unfortunately affected the quality of our photographs. The interior of the castle is rich in history, and the local guide was very knowledgeable in sharing its stories.

The Trakai Island Castle (Trakų salos pilis) is a stunning medieval fortress set on an island in Lake Galvė, Lithuania. Reached by wooden bridges, it feels like stepping into a fairytale. History Museums
Open-air museum showcasing local customs & culture, with folk performances & hands-on workshops.
Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum (Lietuvos Etnografijos Muziejus) – an absolute gem for anyone who loves culture, history, and immersive travel! 🌾🇱🇹 This place is a solid 10/10 – no exaggeration. You can easily spend the whole day here (or even longer), wandering across a vast area filled with traditional wooden houses, windmills, barns, and workshops from different regions of Lithuania. Everything is arranged with incredible attention to detail, and the interiors feel like they’re frozen in time – some even dating back 300 years. What makes this museum special is that you don’t just look – you interact. You can step inside the buildings, touch the tools, see how everyday objects like flour or pottery were made in the past. It’s one of the most hands-on, open-air museums I’ve ever visited – perfect for families, history buffs, photographers, or anyone who wants to feel like they’ve stepped into a Witcher-style world. There are also taverns and food stalls on-site where you can taste authentic Lithuanian cuisine – highly recommend the cepelinai (potato dumplings filled with meat and topped with crispy bacon) and craft kvass (“GIRA” – an easy 10/10!). The entire museum is laid out like a miniature version of Lithuania, with different ethnographic regions represented – so it feels like a cultural road trip within one location. It’s clean, well-maintained, and incredibly atmospheric. The vibe is seminarium to the "witcher"

We visited this place on 26th January, on the last Sunday of the month so we did not pay the entrance ticket. The area is very big and they also turn on the lights of attractions when the sun sets. You can easily spend the entire day here. My suggestion is to come here when winter ends since all the houses were closed and there were no animals. Also, there was only one cafe open, Arbatine. We had a very nice day in the nature, and we will surely come back on summer, when the place can offer the most. PS: The right address is L. Lekavičiaus gatvė 2 Rumšiškės and not 2 J. Aisčio gatvė, where there is only the administration office.

A great place to visit! Very well organized, with a large area perfect for walking – you can easily spend the whole day here. In the town section some points are open where you can buy things, so it’s good to bring some cash. There’s a post office, a craftsman demonstrating traditional work, a restaurant (cards accepted), and a shop with local products like honey. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful place! Don’t think of it as a museum, but as a beautiful, enormous, gorgeous natural park. It’s wonderful! So much nature, it’s breathtaking. It was free today (Sunday) and we only payed 2 euros for parking (license plate scanning). There are toilets at the entrance. The souvenir shop was closed as it was Sunday, I suppose, and I couldn’t see anywhere to eat, so maybe bring some snacks and water. You can also get to the observation tower. We wished we had more time here, you can spend hours exploring and enjoying nature!

This is super interesting to check out. Bring a lot of time and pick a dry day. There is a lot of walking required for this, but it is worth it. There are buildings from all over Lithuania, most of them can be walked though fully equipped with furniture and all in very good shape. I liked the town center the most, there were some things to do. The viewing tower might need an update some time soon.

The 9th Fort of the Kaunas Fortress, originally built by the Russian Tsar in the 1800s, has a haunting history as a Nazi execution site during World War II. It now stands as a museum and memorial to the 50,000 Lithuanians and Jews who lost their lives there. The massive monument erected on the site serves as a solemn reminder of this tragic past.
Definitely worth a visit. Monemument and information regarding mass killings is sobering but presented respectfully. Information inside the exhibit is thorough and well worth while spending the time to read. Available in both Lithuanian and English.

As you arive there is a coffee machine at the carpark (there is no cafe or shop to get food here) it is a short pavedcwalk up to the main museum €8 Euros to go in to the Museum was well work it. There is so much to see inside. Well thought out displays and installations. Was history and so.e very thought provoking displays. Everything is displayed in Lithuanian and English. You can walk around the outside area for free. 100% recommended this for a visit 2-3 hrs would do it justice to see Everything!

If you want to understand something of the history of the region in the 20th century, this fortress gives a good overview. I had no idea that the Lithuanians continued to resist the Soviet occupation well into the 1950s. If you go by bus, remember to press the stop button before you reach the stop. I didn't and ended up a mile or two in the wrong direction.

It’s worthy to see this castle - after all, it is a symbol of the city! Inside there is a museum - price is low (for student 2€), but exhibits are not interesting. There is a view of the city from there - the free one is better, but remember that in Kaunas you can find better places for this, for example the Alexota funicular.

A very nice castle, but quite small once you get inside and with status you need to be careful as they are quite steep and you will need to wait for people or to go upstairs or downstairs as you can do both at the same time as it’s quite narrow. Worth a visit tho. The prices for tickets is ok too £4 for adult, but for students, kids, retired and disabled people gets it’s cheaper or does not pay at all which is nice.

The Kaunas Town Hall is a beautiful and impressive building – a real highlight in the heart of the Old Town. The architecture is elegant, and the surrounding square is full of charm and history. It’s a great spot for photos and a nice place to sit and take in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, during our visit, the building was under renovation, so we couldn’t fully enjoy or explore it. It’s understandable that maintenance is necessary, but it was a bit disappointing not to see it in its full glory. Still, it’s a lovely landmark and definitely worth stopping by if you’re in Kaunas – hopefully next time without scaffolding!

I won't even mention the price!!!! 13 rubles, well, that's incomprehensible!!!!!1!!........ the woman at the checkout was completely impudent, tried to rip me off for 10 rubles in change..... and didn't even apologize... (Translated by Google) Such a wonderful, beautiful city, but the Zoo did not live up to our expectations. Terrible conditions for animals. Small cages, only a floor and a couple of branches. No trees inside, no normal locations. The fence and everything else is from the Soviet Union, they could have redone it. We were in the animal park in Baranovichi, Minsk, everything is very beautiful there, at a height, and here we wasted our money. It was a pity for the animals, it's hot, and they have nowhere to hide from the sun, they lie on the sand and die ((( (Original)

(Translated by Google) The bird exhibit was decent, since most bird species are usually kept as pets. The mammal exhibit, especially the large predators, was extremely depressing. The bears and monkeys were pacing back and forth in a state of zoochosis. The bear enclosures were all concrete and stone, no greenery, just a dirty pond where they could cool off. The ungulates were also kept in small enclosures, with virtually no greenery. The toucan was either sick or very stressed, and was going bald. This zoo was the first place where I felt sorry for the hyena. I am not a fan of zoos in general, but the enclosures could have been made bigger, so that they would have been more interesting and natural for their inhabitants.

(Translated by Google) We were on holiday in Grodno and decided to visit the zoo. Unfortunately, we were very upset and saddened that such prisons for poor animals still exist. Nowadays, zoos should meet modern standards. Animals and birds should be kept as in nature, where there is enough space for their normal existence, lifestyle, needs. And not in cages, where, one might say, there is no room to turn around. A real nightmare. I am sure that the government of Belarus has enough resources to build a normal wildlife park! I wish you to do this. Also think about equipping the park with sufficient stations where you can buy water, food, where children can play, a room for mothers and children to change diapers, etc. In general, this is unacceptable in our time. It is a pity to see this.

I visited this place about a month ago. I was really baffled by its sheer size and the view from up top, I would really recommend this place just because of it's historical value and the amazing views of the forest, creek and village. There is nothing I could complain about, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone with a fear of heights. 😉

These bridges are not only a testament to Prussian engineering and architectural prowess but also a historical symbol of their might and riches. The affordability of the visit, with a modest ticket price of 10 PLN per person, is complemented by the convenience of free parking. As you walk across these grand old bridges, you’re treated to a unique perspective of their design and structure. There’s also the option to explore beneath them along the river, offering a different view and a sense of tranquility. It’s a place where history, architecture, and nature converge, offering a memorable experience for visitors.

Boyen Fortress, located in the Masurian Lake District, is a storied 19th-century fortress that played a significant role during World War I and II. Situated on an isthmus between Kisajno and Niegocin lakes, it was once home to 3,000 soldiers defending Gizycko. The fortress features impressive bastion architecture and offers several walking trails with information boards in Polish, English, and German.
Definitely worth a visit. Some facts and figures are really impressive! The fortress itself offers many interesting places, hidden gems and one famous brand logo! Remember to book a guide, definitely worth the money!
Eliza T — Google review
A nice place to visit if you are in the area. The price is very reasonable at 18 pln = £3.48 but unfortunately there is a lot of renovation work needed in the buildings as well as the grounds. It's a shame the vandals get in and graffiti the place. When we were walking around the grounds there were some information signs in a number of languages including English. The exhibitions in buildings 1,16,19 & 22 were okay, very disappointing though there was no translation to English, even a leaflet would of done.
Helen M — Google review
An impressive (read: large) fortress, with a number of auxiliary exhibits throughout its buildings. Several well-marked trails offer different options to visit - the longest will take several hours. The interior of the area could host other attractions, currently it's mostly a meadow.
Pawel S — Google review
Impressive fortress of bastion type, really big. The admission is decent, the longest walk is like 2-3 hours, depends how much interest do you wanna pay to exhibitions and buildings. Downsides: some paths are in bit rougher style of terrain, you go obviously up and down frequently. Exhibitions are not much. Lacking the concept, bits of that and that with little commentary on info tables. Especially the "gunpowder" one. Also it's heavily over grown with trees and bushes, so sheer size and magnificence of the fortress is drown and it resembles more city park than historical landmark.
Václav S — Google review

This was an impromptu visit at the end of winter in Poland. Will come back in summer. Great place to explore and learn the rich history. You probably need good 4 hours or so to do it. Take your time and explore.

This is an amazing, huge place that is only partly developed. The site is well-organised, and there are 3 different routes to follow, the red route being the most strenuous and interesting. There are plans to develop the site further, including the restoration of some of the buildings and conversion into a hotel. Although parts of the site are not suitable for the less able, there is still a lot that is suitable, and it's well worth the visit. Recommended.
Colin H — Google review
Interesting historical site to visit. There's a detailed sign next to every building to explain the function of each place. There are 3 touristic routes to follow, all of them relatively easy to do. Some of the buildings are pretty much damaged and forgotten, while some others have a nice exhibit.

Wolf's Lair, also known as Wolfsschanze, is a significant historical site located in the Polish Lake District Mazury near the small settlement of Gierloz. This was Adolf Hitler's headquarters from 1941 to 1944 and played a crucial role in commanding the armies during the conquest of the USSR. The complex consisted of approximately 200 buildings including bunkers, barracks, airfields, a railway station, power plant, water supply system and more.
Amazing experience. Yes, the buildings are mainly ruins, but you can see so much. I highly recommend going on your own and not getting a tour guide because you have all the time you want to see around places, and you move at your own pace. You can get an audio tour in a few languages if you'd like. There's a gift and coffee shop and also a restaurant where you can rest after some hours of walk. It's pets friendly as long as they are on the leash. I would definitely visit again.

Water & Amusement Parks
Park wodny Tropikana is a family-friendly water park offering both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a variety of slides and tubes for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, the park features saunas and a snow grotto for relaxation. The facility also includes an open-air museum known as Folk Building Museum Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek, which showcases nearly 80 rural objects from different regions.
Great water park with a lot of activities for all ages. Many jacuzzi tabs with differen kinds of water, saunas, many different pools for kids and adults. You can spend here 3 hours at least without getting bored. Only downside for us was that no food or drinks are available in the park.
Irena A — Google review
Water park is pretty worn out but it is still fun. Outdoor pools are cool during summer time. If outdoor pools were heated , hotel would have even better ratings.
M Z — Google review
This is not fun place. Tropican naming as fun and current state of aquapark (if you can name it as awuapark) are on different ends of spectrum. This place has been redesigned for calm, chill place. Nothing, nada, zero related to Tropicana. I would call this as large open steril open space. Synonyms to medical reabilitation premices than Tropicana. Kids amenities is a joke, cheap plastic structure in a large open space. I as an adult I had some relaxed episodes during my stay here, but as I cam with kids, they got bored relatively quick. I would not repeat with my kids.

Would be good to have family tickets. On page it say 1.5min little confused because though is 1h and 50min in pool. They do I count as 1.30min not much time at all ,if busy for slides to use or other facilities in that time and get out if with children, 1min after been charged extra every person.

Interesting caves and nice live guides, but when we arrived we did not have an option of a different language and had to listen the guide in Polish, but the cost is reasonable. you should dress well as in summer it is +9 C inside. It's super cool, but the place isn't exactly the best. You can tell there are a ton of bootleg stores in the area with only 3/4 regional things. The place is kind of overall very getto and the wait times are HORRENDOUS. Waited 3hrs to get in, and when I finally did it was for 5mins at best. Looks cool at first, but don't come here. 2 stars for the looks in the cave. Nothing too out-of-the-ordinary but it's nothing special. Just some stalagmites. Also, only polish??? What happened to being friendly to people outside of poland?! I saw some people from the UK and they were totally confused. DONT COME HERE. GRAVE MISTAKE.
Noah V — Google review
Great place to visit for the whole family. Beware, the inside of the cave and its visit for the 20 minutes inside has about 8 degrees Celsius. There is no gift store with extra clothing (hint, hint organizers) thus bringing your own polar or a sweater with a hood is advisable. This is a guided tour, 15 people per guide. Don't be surprised if you have to wait 3-4 hours for your turn, buying tickets online and reserving your spot is a good idea. Recommended.

Royal Castle in Chęciny

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Royal Castle in Chęciny is a 13th to 14th-century hilltop fortress with well-preserved towers and walls, offering stunning views of the Tatra Mountains. Originally built on the site of an earlier fortress dating back to at least the 10th century, it served as a residence for Polish monarchs and underwent expansions over time. While uninhabited for centuries, the castle still retains much of its structure and offers a picturesque setting atop a rocky terrain.
Nice castle with good views. Good to learn a little bit about history of this place. There are two towers with stairs on the top. Beautiful panoramic views from top of the towers. As a bonus you can make pictures in knights helmets.
Kamil K — Google review
If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive place to break up a days travel insurance would thoroughly recommend Chęciny Zamek. We were probably here an hour or so and it has some great interactive things for the kids. It's open air so in winter it got pretty cold especially at the top of the towers but the views of the surrounding area were great. There is also a restaurant by the free car park and toilets (4zł at time of writing) on the walk upto the entrance. There's a gift shop on site and sometimes you can hire a private guide as you walk in. They took card and cash payment at the ticket booth in winter 2025.
Andy H — Google review
A beautiful place to visit. But the cashier does not speak English. For a child who is 13 years old did not sell a discounted ticket because documents were left at car. I don't understand how they can't sell you discounted ticket for child. While buying tickets the cashier were talking on the phone and the queue become very long. There is a very small platform on one of the towers and if the group comes up there is no place to turn around. In this case there should be a sign down that more than 7 people can't go up. Toalets are not free. (4PLN)
Zane P — Google review
It is located just a few kilometres from the motorway connecting Warsaw to Krakow, making it an ideal place for tourists to stop along this route. The visit is enjoyable and lasts about an hour or less.. From the free car park, it takes 10 minutes to walk up to the castle along a small pedestrian street lined with wooden statues. Admission costs 23 PLN, it is possible climb two of the three towers enclosed within the surrounding wall. You then descend on the other side. At a certain point, the road forks into two: one path leads to the village, while the other leads back to the car park and the commercial activities. Built at the end of the 13th century, the castle was once home to knights, nobles and queens. It was destroyed and burned in an uprising against the royal family in 1607. It was rebuilt three years later, but suffered further destruction at the hands of various armies from 1655 onwards. Some maintenance work was carried out on the ruins in 1880, and it was rebuilt after the Second World War to restore it to its former glory.

The place is certainly impressive and excites the mind. Both the castle on the mountain and the town at its foot are steeped in history and make you want to spend as much time there as possible.

Very cool castle. This is one of those hidden gems that you find in Poland. You will park in the parking lot pretty far down below. There's a little bit of a hike to get to the castle from the parking lot but it is a beautiful Forest and Trail. Once you get up to the top there's an entrance and you will pay the fee to get in. There are two towers that you can climb all the way to the top and get a panoramic view of the whole Countryside. My recommendation is to take the tallest one and just go up that one because the views are pretty similar. There are all types of things to see and to visit once you are in the main part and I just think that this place is beautiful.

The aqua park is very small. We attended on Thursday, in July. It was very crowded. There were no places to sit, as people left their belongings on the chairs. You can smell chlorine in the air. It is quite suffocating. Every facility is overcrowded. It is noisy. It is expensive - 2 hours cost 60 zł. If you want to use the sauna area, it is 4 zł per minute! Hugely disappointing. Seriously overpriced.

A terrible, terrible aqua park. Overpriced only because it's in Krakow. Seems like there is no limit for how many people can enter which just points to disgusting greed. If you won't buy tickets online before 10 am you have to wait in pretty long queue or buy tickets in automat. Probably depends on a day of course how long the queque is. Automat sells you only the most expensive tickets - just to force you to pay more (for reference 1h ticket is 55 pln, 2h is 70 pln and there is only option to buy unlimited for 130 pln per person). It's scandal. Aquapark itself is very small and disigned by 3 year old. Let's add some fountain here, two and a half tours for swimmers here, three over there between another swing and a climbing wall. Max depth of pool is 1.5m, there is absolute no privacy anywhere for people to chill further from others. Jaccuzzi where the smallest I have ever seen and there was no way to get in there because there were only 3 of them with like 300 people in the entire aquapark. The "beach" side is a joke. I expected to have a pool also outside and some chairs on sand (because beach) but no. There is fake grass and like 10 cm deep pool for kids, squirting fountain called 'playground' and beach volleyball - the only view of any sand. The only nice things there were buffet area, system of locking-unlocking lockers and spacious showers. Changing rooms - terrible and unintuitine how do they work. Generally, an absolute diseaster of an aqua park. I will tell everyone that I know who is visiting Krakow to avoid this place.

Do not read bad reviews! There a so many fun rides there. The water is great. I recommend this waterpark to everyone.

Do not listen to the bad reviews! The water and the area is warm and I get cold easily. It’s clean and not worn down. We went with a child that’s 3 years old and we’re there for 5 hours!

Impressive waterpark with great selection of attractions. Slides, jacuzzi, sauna, food, pools - you name it. Interesting armband concept which works as the key and payment.

We visited on a Friday evening for 2 hours and was perfect. No queues for the slides and lovely amount of people to make it feel fun and not over crowded, would recommend this time of day. Cafe after did a great pizza and lovely place to relax. We will visit again, clean and felt very safe.

The place is fun for the whole family. We took the full day ticket, and it turned out to be a good choice.. We spent almost 6 hours there, and our kid was willing to stay even more, although she is 5.5 and couldn't use the big slides. What I didn't like - The toilets were pretty dirty all day, and the water in the pools are pretty cold (no way it was 28-30 degrees Celsius..)

Specialty Museums
Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego is situated on the grounds of the former Rakowice-Czyzyny Airport just outside Krakow. The museum features a wide array of historic aircraft, helicopters, gliders, engines, and missiles that narrate the story of aviation history. It houses significant military and civil aircraft from Poland and various other countries worldwide, including a captivating collection from the First and Second World Wars. The museum also includes a modern visitor center for an enhanced experience.
Any Aviation or history lover MUST come here. The one of a kind WW1 planes collection can only be found here in the entire world. Their collection of planes and exhibits are extremely unique and worth making time in your trip to krakow. Staff are friendly, tickets are cheap, and the museum is well kept.

Being a fan of aviation, I really wanted to visit the Museum so I'm really happy I got to do it during our little trip to Kraków! It's such a huuuuuuge museum with an immense airplanes and helicopters on display in hangars and outside, I couldn't believe my eyes at how much planes there were! (seemed endless!!) The tickets are really low for such a good quality museum and such a long visit! (it took us 2h/2h30 as we walk fast) however the lady at the ticket office was not really polite.. nor the one at the museum's shop (responded briefly and in a dry way when asked if she spoke english...). I really enjoyed my visit, I translated for my mother who doesn't speak English so she could appreciate it as much as I did. We also loved the exhibitions, very informative and interesting. I wish we had a guided visit as I saw on panels that to get inside 2 really big airplanes we had to be on a guided tour for that.. (was really sad we couldn't get in like we did on the helicopter on the scheduled time).

The best aircraft museum I’ve been too! Loads of cool aircraft to see and many different exhibits. Probably 100+ aircraft outside and there’s no fence so you can go up to them and walk all round them!

It is an amazing museum. We spent many hours there. It is very big but also you can see that all exhibitions are made with love . really recommend to visit :)

One of the best Aviation Museums I've had the pleasure of visiting! You could easily spend an entire day visiting the vast collection! It's mainly military aircraft which span 100+ years of aviation history with a mix of Allied, Axis, NATO & Soviet aircraft from WW1 through to the end of the Cold War, there is a retired LOT Polish Airlines Tupelov TU-134 airliner, but its in a bit of a state, hope it gets a restoration eventually! Totally worth coming to, even if you're not mad on planes!

It was really great seeing the variety of aircrafts, including vintage war planes. I had always wondered what happened to them, so it was cool learning about their history. The place is massive, and you'll need to walk a lot to see everything, so if you're not into long walks or history, it might not be your thing. But overall, I enjoyed it

A gorgeous, very interesting place, undeservedly deprived of attention. We were there on a free day and there were very few visitors. A large park of airplanes in the open air, many hangars of various equipment from different eras and countries. Polite staff, interactive exhibits.

Amazing museum, so many different aircraft from different places and for different uses. You could go right up to the planes and peer inside (without touching). Especially loved the exhibit on pioneering polish female pilots!

Jasna Góra is a significant spiritual site in Poland, established by the Paulite order in 1382. The monastery houses the revered Icon of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa and various other sacred artworks. The site also features an information center that offers guided tours in English.
A truly magical place. Visiting Jasna Góra Monastery was an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere is filled with peace and spiritual energy. You can feel a deep sense of calm and sacredness the moment you walk through the gates. A must-visit for anyone seeking reflection, history, or simply a moment of inner peace.

A heathen here. A pretty magnificent church. Our tour uses a local tour guide who takes us through the church while the Mass is in progress. He's also very thorough with the small museum. The church is dedicated to Black Madonna (the Virgin Mary), mother of Jesus. Reportedly, she possessed extraordinary power.

I love this place a lot. As soon as you walk through the gates it feels like you enter a little village on its own!!! It's a really peaceful and sacred place. I can only recommend ^^

Gorgeous buildings and surroundings. We were lucky enough to be there while mass was on. The sound of singing fills the place with reverie. There are multiple areas of the compound that are well worth a visit.

Wonderful shrine, a must-see while around Krakow. The icone of our Lady, the beautiful church, a very interesting treasury and museum, and breathtaking view at the top of the tower, all these make this place a magical one.

This is considered to be a sacred place with a miracle-making icon. This historical place is visited by the Pope, too. The architecture with inside decoration of the churches is beautiful! The entrance is free. There is a large parking behind the cathedral complex. Many pilgrims come here every year.
