Crypt of Original Sin is a unique cave church featuring frescoes from the 8th and 9th centuries depicting biblical scenes and angels. Accessing the site can be a bit challenging, with limited lighting and some language barriers for English speakers. Visitors have noted that the audio devices for English speakers may not be of high quality, and some paintings are missing or deteriorated. It's recommended to make reservations in advance, as access may require prior arrangements.
This is a very special experience in a Rock Church, just 25 mins from Matera. But we almost didn’t go because of some bad reviews. The crypt is in a remote location, down a country road, so it is a bumpy ride but you don’t need a 4x4. It’s not as bad as some reviewers suggest.
The Crypt is an amazing place where the devotion of Benedictine Monks from the 8th Century is expressed in beautiful frescos. The Flower Painter of Matera is named as the artist due to the beautiful red flowers that connect all the different areas of the artwork. The visit lasts only 20 minutes, but that is long enough to take in the wonderful artwork and experience something truly sacred. Of note: no photos are allowed in the Crypt.
There is a ticked office about 750m from the entrance where we purchased our tickets. See photos. We were unable to buy online (PayPal only), but we knew that the time slot we wanted was not booked up, so we just drove there and bought the tickets on site. If you do this, be sure to check the website for availability especially in high season. We went in mid April and there were only 4 of us in our viewing. The cost was 11 euros per person.
BE ON TIME - this is a scheduled visit and all visitors are taken to the crypt together.
The staff were excellent - very friendly. And we also purchased the red wine they sell at their store for 10 euros, which was fabulous.

Very special place in one of oldest cave churches of Meteora. Interesting documentation about the history of the Cave.
You need an appointment. So I didn’t actually get to see it. But this bridge above it is pretty cool but not worth the drive down the sketchy road.
Remember to book ahead of time on the internet and arrive 30 minutes before your timed visit. Sounds a hassle but it's well worth the bother. The frescoes are wonderful.
A little mistery accompanies this location in the middle of the beautiful countryside. 10 minute drive from Matera. they show this little cave church from IX century with a light show that helps understand the representations. The language of the show is Italian but they offer audioguides with all main languages.
You need to book your visit online and when you arrive to the visit centre you will need to drive to the location for 2 minutes following the shuttle.

A twofold experience: the site is undisputably stunning. The paintings are unique, and well restored. Our guide was kind and friendly, he is not to blame for a slightly underwhelmed feeling after the visit.
But, the whole procedure is annoying, starting from the 'no foto' policy, to the fact that you have to wait in a room of overpriced tourist stuff for half an hour before being allowed into the crypt for 15 minutes, of course seated and with a kitschy Audioguide.
By the way, selling prints on gypsum slabs as "oil painting on tufo" is borderline fraud.

I’m really glad to see that the theatre is so well preserved and remains closely tied to the city’s heritage. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Stunning building! We took the 30 min tour for €5/person, and it was well worth the cost. The tour guide gave the tour info in both Italian and English. The building suffered a horrible fire in the 1990s and was rebuilt, reopening in 2008, and it's just so beautiful. Highly recommend. Would love to see an opera here.
Even though we went to what is was supposed to be an opera for kids, the vast majority of the audience was adult and the show was absolutely stunning.
Highly recommend the experience. The Labirynt in Crete by Petruzzelli theater has extremely well prepared shows with new technology incorporated gracefully into an otherwise classic story. The twist and refreshed take of the plot is also very creative.
All in all 10/10.
I took a guided tour (takes 30 minutes, costs 7€ for adults and 2€ for students) and didn't regret any penny! It was the nicest experience in Bari and the staff was very nice! Recommended!

We visited on the weekend, but unfortunately the place was closed and there was no option to buy tickets. From the look of things, it seems like it may no longer be operating—lockers appeared old and dusty, though it’s possible it’s just temporarily closed (I can’t say for sure), but I see people visited it lately an it was open… I wish it was open when we visited 🥹🥹🥹
That said, you can still walk down the stairs to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the town. The entrance door is nice and the view adding it’s magic, and the historical architecture is truly beautiful and worth seeing. 🥰 Definitely a nice spot for a quick stop and some great photos! 🤩

We decided to visit Palombardo Lungo on a blistering afternoon, more in need of a break from the sun than anything else. Handing over the €3 per adult felt a bit steep for what essentially looked like a stone archway.
We went in with low expectations, and to be honest, the experience didn't really justify the price from a historical or cultural perspective. The name itself, "lungo" (long), gives you the most accurate description: it's a long, shaded passageway that you walk through.
There's not a whole lot to see or do inside. It's a simple, well-maintained tunnel with rough-hewn stone walls and a cool, damp atmosphere. You can hear your own footsteps echoing in the quiet. However, what it lacks in visual spectacle, it more than makes up for in pure, unadulterated relief from the heat. The moment you step out of the blinding sunlight and into that cool, dark interior, it feels like a total reset for your body. It's the most refreshing few minutes you'll spend all day.
So, while I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a must-see attraction on its own merit, if you find yourself walking around under a merciless sun and your energy is starting to fade, Palombardo Lungo becomes a practical, and at that moment, invaluable refuge.
The €3 isn't for the historical significance; it's for the brief, beautiful respite from the heat. It's a great example of how sometimes the best part of a visit isn't what's advertised, but the simple comfort it provides from the elements.
This underground building is a good example how Matera residence stored water in old days. It should be able to store lots water, but now there is only little water on the bottom, maybe only for exhibition purpose, not sure if tap water is nowdays availabel in Matera.
The building is well maintained, with bridges and steps for visitors to walk around. The lights inside is colorful. It is quite big structure and worthy to spend some time here.

Very interesting place to visit the second largest cistern in Europe, costs €3 for entry and takes about 10 minutes to see the attraction.
This water reservoir excavated in the rock, with numerous rooms, which served until a fairly recent time to supply water to Matera. It is truly impressive, the structure is well organized, restored and well lit. If you come to Matera it is worth visiting. Nicely done through walkways and stairs down and up, so it is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

The house is really hard to find. We had been searching for an hour to find it. And in the burning sun it was quite an experience.
But our struggle was worth it. The staff were amazing, they were nice, friendly. And they spoke English very well (from experience during my stay, we struggled because of language barrier in many places so it was a happy relief :) ).
The Casa Noha isn’t a big sight because of its look. You watch 4 videos in 3 rooms and they have an authentic kitchen in the 4th room.
The videos are very interesting. I found them one of the best informative videos I have ever watched. The narrative is understandable, and helpful to understand how the people of Matera have lived.
I think all of us came out satisfied, and with more knowledge than before.
I recommend it before visiting the whole town. It gives you another perspective than just walking around in the city of ruins.

The audio guides are well done and available in many languages but I would have appreciated more information out of them. I guess especially during high season they don't want people to spend too much time in each room so they have space for more visitors. All in all I consider it a "Must do" when you visit Matera.

We visited a traditional cave dwelling in the Sassi Caveoso area, and it was definitely worth the stop. Although we had to wait a few minutes before entering, the staff was very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience feel relaxed and unhurried.
The visit offers a fascinating glimpse into how people lived in these caves until the 1950s. It’s quite remarkable—and a little humbling—to see how entire families shared these spaces not only with each other but also with their animals, including chickens and even horses.
The interior has been thoughtfully restored and laid out, with everyday objects and furniture that help bring the past to life. Very interesting reconstruction of life and objects in Sassi di Matera. It is amazing that this was not so long ago. It consists of 3 parts, of which only the living room and the natural refrigerator are worth seeing. There is a paid entrance fee of 5 euros for which you get a recorded audio guide through your phone, which is quite crazy, but it is what it is.
A Fascinating Step Back in Time - A Must-See in Matera.
Visiting the Casa Grotta nei Sassi was a truly eye-opening experience. It's an amazing place to discover what a traditional peasant home looked like, and it's incredible to think that families lived this way until they were relocated in the 1950s.
The recreation is very well done and gives you a powerful feel for their daily life.
What makes this a fantastic value is that the same ticket also gives you access to two other nearby sites: an ancient snow cave used for storing ice and a small cave church that was later converted into a dwelling.
This is an absolute must-see when you are in the area. It doesn't take long to visit, but it provides incredible context for understanding the unique history of the Sassi. Highly recommended.

Oh crap. An overall underwhelming sightseeing spot. Don’t expect a full size museum. It is basically a studio packed with furniture and miscellaneous items. We like antiques, but wow, the overall amount of things to see is severely insufficient. It is sad. The site can be finished in 5 minutes. This spot l shouldn’t be priced at 5 euro. The other attractions in Matera offer a lot more and are only 3-4 euro. 5 euro is an absolute rip off. Do yourself a favor, save the 5 euro and get yourself something to drink. The fair value of this attraction should be 1 euro at best, if not free. If you don’t have time, skip this spot. The scenery around this attraction is amazing however; so visiting this general area is still recommended.

During my research I found a photo that was taken from the inside of a cave located in Parco Regionale della Murgia, Materna. I became obsessed with getting my own photo. It wasnt easy. My son-in-law escorted me on the short but steep hike to one of the many caves. I was very proud of the results but realized this was no trek to be taken lightly. At 70 years old and in great shape I managed to lie on my back for the shot (see silhoutee of my legs. The photo of the outside of the cave from taken across the way from an area of th Sassi. Once you get to the park you will notice small arrows pointing you in the right direction. You do not need to cross the bridge. Drive to the park and follow the signs. Beware! tha the cave isnt easy to find or to get to but if you are like me and you have to get the shot. wear sturdy sneakers, travel light and take your time.
Panoramic views at the top of the cave. Considering you could do this hike in 1-2 hours by cutting through the switchbacks, the views and the Tibetan bridge walk are def worth it if in town.

Visit a place where time forgot! Matera is a truly stunning town. You could easily spend two or three days here just walking the streets and National Park. The transition from the old town into the park is amazing and the views are simply breathtaking. Traversing the suspension bridge into the park leaves you feeling like your walking next to dinosaurs.
Climbing the steep walk to the opposite side is well worth it but take plenty of water and some really good walking shoes/boots. Trainers aren’t really going to do the job.
You are surrounded in history and magical culture with loads of beautiful places to eat and drink.

Angelo Coluccia was an amazing host by providing the best accommodations (apt) transportation to and from Bari airport and daily tours which included visits up to three towns each day. Some highlights were visiting churches and Basilica's, a store where cheese was made, wine tasking at a local vineyard, making pasta at a local farm house.
Obviously the food was amazing, Angelo found us local restaurants with strong ties to their communities and took time to explain each wine for that particular meal. Great surprise was when he did some family history for my wife and planned a visit to her Grandparents town of Gravina.

Our week-long tour with Angelo (from Experience Puglia Tours) in Puglia was magical! I had never before used a tour guide for an entire trip, and could not have been more happily surprised! What makes an experience is how your left feeling at the end of the day. We had planned to come on a Friday to use the pool because it was too winding for the beach. The thrillers party site we booked through didn’t communicate that the pool was closed. When we arrived, the director explained to us what had happened, obviously we were disappointed.
But then this is where true customer service and hospitality shined! The director and his team arranged for us to come the next day and provided free parking, exclusive pool access for our kids and made us feel like nothing was too much to ask for.
It’s a great location, great food, friendly team who were there to help you. We overheard some miscommunication on the day from other guests but from our perspective the team were always looking to find solution and make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

Visitors can enjoy guided tours with knowledgeable guides who provide clear explanations in both English and Italian.
We found this hidden gem by chance. What we experienced during our visit to the cave was incredible. Only about 2 meters deep, the ground splits into a wonderful, amazing cave.
Our guide, Davide, walked us through the cave giving us all the details with complete professionalism.
I will leave some photos but, I assure you, what you will see when visiting this cave, is beyond imagination. We strongly recommend you to stop and dive into the cave and you will have the impression that you are in a story.

This was an excellent place to visit while in Putignsno! It’s a guided tour of the caves and it’s not a deep cave ( 20 meters to so) so the cave is very close to the above ground! It’s a beautiful cave system and the tour lasts 30 minutes or so and has stunning formations!
We had a fantastic visit! The cave itself is absolutely wonderful — beautiful formations and a really unique atmosphere. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and super nice, making the tour fun and interesting even for our 7-year-old.
I loved that we were allowed to take pictures (always a plus!), and the guide even gave us time to stop for photos along the way. The group was small, so it felt very personal and attentive. Highly recommended for families or anyone who enjoys exploring nature and learning something new!
Is a breathtaking experience 20m under ground, there is a wine cellar (you can't drink though), amazing rock formations, rock sales and tree roots, I recommend spending 30mins down there, or pay for a specialist and do an even deeper (40m) trip.

I can't help feel that Polignano is a victim of its own "beauty". Certainly worth a visit, but I felt I kept on waiting for it to deliver, and it never did.
It does have an impressive setting, built above and into the shallow cliffs, and it had the typical bars and restaurants to enjoy, with a "new" viaduct where an old Roman one used to be, above THE beach - pebble and crowded, so for viewing from a distance rather than enjoying as a beach.
You also run out of things to experience pretty quickly, so give it an hour for a coffee, beer or glass of wine, and move on!

A special place to visit! The tall narrow houses clinging to the cliffs with the crashing waves below. Let your eyes soak up the beautiful clear Adriatic sea. Walk the narrow passages in centro storico. Experience the poetry of the little village. Dive back to Roma times.
What a charming place to stay for a long weekend. Polignano a Mare looks like it is straight out of a movie set. This part of Italy (the heel) does not suffer over-tourism so I found it peaceful. The small town is very eye catching, as it's perched precariously on steep sea cliffs. The houses have flower laden balconies and are separated by tight alleyways. You really feel like you are stepping back in time by decades. Your standard run of the mill restaurant here, would be a top class Italian restaurant at home, and the prices are great. There is a statue here dedicated to their favourite son - the famous Italian singer, composer, and actor Domenico Modugno. There is not much English spoken here, so you are better off making the effort to learn some Italian words. If you are in the Bari area, I would advise coming here for a day trip at least, it's that special here.

I specifically bought a ticket in advance on Booking called “Skip the Line: Trullo Sovrano Admission Ticket”, so I wouldn’t have to wait in line under the scorching sun at the Trullo Museum. The very name of the ticket says “Skip the Line.”
However, when I arrived, it turned out that pre-purchased tickets weren't being accepted at all. I was forced to stand in a half-hour queue under the blazing sun together with people who hadn’t bought any tickets in advance. The line moved very slowly because there was only one person selling and checking tickets at the entrance.
I tried twice to enter without waiting in line, showing my pre-booked ticket, but was firmly refused both times. So keep in mind: even if you buy the Skip the Line: Trullo Sovrano Admission Ticket, you will still have to queue with everyone else.
There’s nothing particularly special inside. I only waited in line because I had come all the way from Bari to see an authentic trullo. Considering such terrible service, this visit isn't worth even 2€. When I complained at the entrance, the staff member simply told me, “You shouldn’t buy tickets on Booking.” That’s their whole attitude toward visitors.

This was one of the most amazing and funny experiences in my entire life! This place is absolutely amazing and it is a great place for kids! The amusement park after the safari is absolutely amazing! For the safari I can highly recommend you to buy carrots, apples and cabbage in advance so that you have for more animals to feed. It is super funny and awesome that you can pet the zebras, giraffes and camels.

Amazing experience! We took the train from Bari and a bus from the train station + a 30 min walk from Fasano, as there was no shuttle bus during weekdays, but was totally worth it.
We did not have a car, and were planning to take the bus, but we were given a spare car, which made the experience unforgettable.
Amazing experience! One literally feeds giraffes amd zebras out of the car window. Animals are so near that it cannot be compared with any other zoo. Bring 3-5 kg Carrots and buy peanuts for the monkeys! Totally worth it for any age.
The safari tour was great but the rest more la la.. Rest is the second part of walking tour including a funny train and many closed attractions.
Also they forced me to pay extra parking 4 EUR although I paid a family ticket 140 EUR and they know the tour ends with parking and proceeding by foot once through the safari with the car🤣 . Pretty low and embarrassing 👎
But!! The camels are over cool. 🐫
Loved it! Safari from the car was definitely the best part! Bring carrots with you, animals will love it. It can get slow and crowded in the season, so have patience and enjoy the ride. Bring water with you cause it can take 2 hours to just go through the first part in car. You don’t have to buy tickets in advance, you can do it at the gate from your car when you arrive.
Great time spent with the family in the Safari and the park! The park is huge, you can see the animals very close, pet them! The animals are well looked after, there is no bad smell at all! Their territory is large, it looks like the animals are happy in the park! I highly recommend it!
Me and my family had a great time! Every penny was worth it :). The animals seemed happy and freely ran around the park. After our family went through the safari we left without knowing how much is left there,so make sure you don’t make the same mistake! But even if you do,you can come back the same day with the same tickets and you can make sure you don’t miss any more fun! 5 stars❤️
It's well managed and unique (for Europe) place to see lots of exotic animals considerably free in a wide space from the close but safe approach of your car. There are many areas that you are allowed to touch and feed the animals (please don't give them junk or human food, you can buy carrots, peanuts etc. specially for them at the entrance) and areas where you need to stay in your car at all times but it's all worth it. The animals looks like the staff take good care of them which is very important for me considering other similar places or zoo parks in Europe. It's really family/kids friendly place. In the pedestrian area you can find other animals and different zones like reptiles and insects, lake with birds and monkeys where you can have a paid boat ride, there is a rail car (zoo metro) which you can take from one zone to another, a special monkey zone which you can visit with a caged safari style truck and feed peanuts to the animals through a special holes. There is an amusement park in the pedestrian area where you can find food and drinks and have some fun before you take off. Overall a great place for kids and families, we had amazing time there.

Like everything in this city, the park lacks maintenance, looks (and feels) completely abandoned and there is a complete disregard for the rules. Many parts of the park have been closed to the public for a long time. People here have no common sense or understanding of the value of a beautiful park like this one.
Beautiful place but unfortunately abandoned and lacking in maintenance. Poor lighting. Uneven and dangerous wooden walkway. 🤔☹️
Very nice park with bar parkours right behind the bus station.
It's extremely peaceful, the fresh pine smell is almost overwhelming and the cricket sounds are the best meditation music 🎶
Nothing special but a nice park for the kids
Italy needs more places like this, all over and less dumb fencing that makes the country look like a prison yard.
