The Musée Provincial Félicien Rops is a museum dedicated to the 19th-century Belgian artist, showcasing his paintings, letters, and sketches. The museum features themed groups of his art, including his time as a caricaturist in Brussels. One of the most famous works on display is the etching 'La Mort Qui Danse' (Dancing Death), depicting a skeleton in women's clothing inspired by Gothic Romantic works.
Fabulous artist, insane to think he dared to paint and draw what he did in the 19th century. The museum itself is really nice, clean, well-lit, and the staff at reception is calm and friendly. Great souvenirs and high-quality prints in the museum shops.
E M — Google review
Never heard of this artist until visting Namur. Unexpected, but interesting subject matter. Gallery offered good value. I'm not a serious art fan, more casual/opportunistic, but pleased to add this artist to the list of those I have seen. If you have any interest in art galleries, this is highly recommended.
Richardnoller63 — Google review
A really good museum for art lovers. Great permanent exhibition of works by Felicien Rops. Nicely exhibited with lighting that goes off when there’s no one in the room. The temporary exhibit of work called ‘Hommage a Pan’ was amazing. Beautiful large scale pen and ink drawings. Such detail. Staff very friendly. The appropriate member of staff jumped in to speak English to us.
Paula L — Google review
Felicien Rops is a well known artist for picturing the ladies of the 'houses of ill repute' and a criticaster during his years as a student. But his pendrawings of ordinary people and paintings really shows his talent as well. Due to renovations of the museum of Elsene, part of the impressionist collection can be viewed as well...and even if the permanent collection is nice, this temporary exhibition makes it top.
Bart E — Google review
Very interesting museum with famous arts. It's possible to visit it for free with Pass musées of Belgium.
Nat G — Google review
Lovely museum covering the diversity of the work of Rops, not very large but charming. The painter is well known for his symbolic works and his nudes, but he also produced satirical etchings. Very friendly reception.
Emmanuel G — Google review
The outside of this museum is striking and worth a pass by. The inside houses many sketches and studies for larger works. I found the giant sketch for "British Empire panels" to be very interesting in it's detail and scale.
Jessica M — Google review
Excellent museum of the fin de siècle artist Félicien Rops. I had never heard of him before. Talented and for me surprisingly scandalous for the era.

Citadelle de Namur

Historic Sites
The Citadelle de Namur is a historic fortress that dates back to the 10th century and has been rebuilt multiple times over the centuries. It dominates the town of Namur, covering an entire hilltop with its ramparts, tunnels, and grey walls. While much of what stands today is from the 19th and 20th centuries, it still retains its compelling medieval charm.
What a tremendous experience. The premises are huge and historically loaded. It’s a real maze, a masterpiece of military architecture bearing the signature of several major military architects like Vauban. The hosted city museum and the 7km long (4 accessible) well preserved tunnels are awesome. Adding a bit of nature, wandering, physical activity and a lot of friendliness, you’ve got a wonderful experience and the need to come back and discover the actual City.
Raphaël D — Google review
Lovely place to go on a day and family trip. The place is enormous. There is plenty of things to do. You could take the telepherique, eat in the top hill restaurant, go hiking, taking photos of Namur from the top, take the touristic train, and more. You can also park in different stages of the citadel and for free.
ALMUDENA S — Google review
Quality family walk here. Views are stunning. We drove to the top to go to the kids play park which is about 10-15 mins away from the Citadelle, so that helped with children and walking up a hill. Worth the visit and the views. Totally recommend it.
Ryan J — Google review
Fantastic walking area in the former fort of Namur city. Entrance to the for and grounds is free, but the museum and underground tours require a fee. It's not really that far to climb, just steep. In return you get wonderful views of the city in the north bank. If you don't fee like climbing, get the Gondola. Tickets are one way or return. One way (up) is fine in my humble opinion.
Chung H — Google review
Interesting. Great view over the city of Namur. We had our lunch on the grass. We did not have enough time to do the paid visits. They need to increase the number of parking spots. It was grossly inadequate and we were in late May. It would also be nice to have more historical exhibit available for free.
Nicolas A — Google review
Very nice place. Can recommend the Totemus game. Fun and interactive way of discovering the citadelle and its history. The panorama has a very nice terrace, overlooking the Namur skyline.
Inge V — Google review
I suggest taking the telepherique (gondola 🚠🚡) on the way up and walk down. There's a large building next to the gondolas with a lot of artwork in it. Some exhibits you have to pay for (the VR headsets for some of the artwork). I wish there was a tour because I had no idea what I was looking at or why the citadel was there. Plenty of places to eat (there's a sort of food court building) below the walking tunnel.
L M — Google review
We bought the full pass online to see the visitor center, the underground galeries and the little train ride. Very complete visit, you leave the citadelle knowing a bit more about Namur and Belgium history. Great tour guide! (Unfortunally I dont recall his name)

Citadelle de Dinant

Mentioned on
20 lists
Museums
Castle
Dinant Citadel is a medieval stronghold and museum that can be accessed via 408 steps or a cable car. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valley. Admission fee of 11 is required, regardless of where one parks. A ticket counter can be found at both the top and bottom entrances, with limited access. Visitors may choose between taking the stairs or cable car, but must still wait in line and pay the fee.
The ticket to cable car and citadel is included. The steps are more but its worth to climb as view gets better. The world war museum is interesting and they also give tablets to listen as guide. There is a small souvenir shop, but i found better magnets and glasses in the store below the citadel. And there was little waiting period for cable car.
Dr. N — Google review
You can walk up the steps to the top but there’s also a cable car which is worth taking. The view from the upper rampart is extensive, over the whole city of Dinant. The structure of the fort is interesting but the displays are lacking. There is also a cafe at the top where you can get minimal food & drink
Graham S — Google review
Wonderful place to visit. Amazing views over the whole of Dinant, and across the Meuse valley. Nice cafe at the top with polite staff and nice food. Beer on tap! The Citadelle is really interesting, with polite staff, interactive history pads are available use and worth it. History covered through the ages. The World War exhibition is very thought provoking and tells a sad tale. Go up on the fenicular if possible, it’s worth the ride up and down. It only takes a few minutes with amazing views of the church below. Note: there is a section of the exhibition after the ‘bunkers’ that is very sensory challenging! There are not enough signs to warn people. I have no problems with balance, but found this area challenging. Fun and funny but high potential falls risk! Not even sure what it was about 🫣
Andrea B — Google review
One of the best small museums we've been to, with a beautiful panoramic view of the city of Dinant. The citadel museum uses simple but effective tablet technology to enhance visitors' understanding of the history of the citadel and city. The exhibit about WWI, using a blend of visual, auditory and sensory stimuli, was also very moving. Both kids and adults enjoyed the visit and the "treasure hunt". We chose the entrance ticket that included the short cruise on the Meuse river and it was very nice. Fyi, we went here on the 2nd week of November and the cable car was not available and it won't be available for a few months, so we assume the cable car doesn't run in fall/winter. The 408 stair steps with railing are doable for kids and adults with moderate physical ability. There's a nice playground in the courtyard at the very end of the self-guided tour. The trip to Dinant was impromptu but we're so glad we did it. It took avout 2 hours from Brussels to Dinant by train and bus.
Thao G — Google review
it is a gorgeous town! visited in September. the price of 14 euros to visit the fortress and the cable car included is acceptable... everything is beautiful from the landscapes and what you can see in the fortress... I highly recommend it! I think it is among the most beautiful places in Belgium.
Vasile A — Google review
A small museum, but such a nice surprise! The history is explained in a really clear, easy-to-follow storyline, and the exhibitions are well done. It’s a quick visit, but you actually learn a lot and walk out feeling like you have just stepped out from the past.
Pichy P — Google review
The augmented reality tour, included in the €14 price, makes the visit more enjoyable, especially for children. On that day, the cable car was closed. To avoid climbing the 408 steps, you can access the citadel via the parking at 1 Chemin de la Citadelle, which is free and has plenty of spaces.
Lea S — Google review
The citadel is located on top of a cliff which overlooks the city, making it a prime structure for defense. In the present day, this means it’s a great place to get some incredible views of Dinant. There is a museum inside which goes in depth on the significance of the citadel during war time. It was put together really well, the town has an amazing history. Also, there is a trolley you can ride up and down the cliffside! There is also a very steep set of stairs which will definitely test your stamina. Tickets were about 14€ for adults.

Pont Charles de Gaulle

Mentioned on
13 lists
Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Pont Charles de Gaulle, also known as the Charles de Gaulle Bridge, holds a significant place in history due to its connection to the Battle of Dinant during World War I. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction located near the Citadel of Dinant and offers stunning views of the Meuse River. It is adorned with multiple saxophones representing different countries, serving as a tribute to the European Union.
The bridge offers a beautiful view of the city center. Here you can take a tourist tram to explore the whole city. Near the bridge, further down the street, there are boat stops for a walk along the river. It's definitely worth doing.
Solomiia S — Google review
A unique bridge uses saxophones to pay tribute to two great men and countries. Built in 2010, the bridge is adorned with saxophones. Painted in unique colors, one saxophone takes on the appearance of a basketball, another resembles a mermaid, while another depicts a castle and a dragon. Each saxophone is placed in front of its respective flag, paying homage to the country it represents. That’s because the Belgian city of Dinant is where Adolphe Sax – the inventor of the saxophone – was born. In 1841, Sax invented the saxophone, which was one of many instruments he would influence or create in his heyday. His first major invention was to improve the design of the bass clarinet. Of course, the Charles de Gaulle Bridge also pays homage to the French general it is named after, who led the French resistance against Nazi Germany in the 1940s (as a junior officer at the time). Today, Belgium’s Charles de Gaulle Bridge remains a colorful and playful way to pay tribute to two great men of the past and to the unity of the European Union. The Charles de Gaulle Saxophone Bridge is located in the city of Dinant in Belgium. The bridge is located at Rue de la Gare, near the Gare de Dinant train station next to the Meuse River.
Dimitris — Google review
Great place for lunch - many riverside cafes and interesting things to see.
Paul B — Google review
A fun bridge full of Saxophones dedicated to the invention of the saxophone by aldolphe in the town of Dinant . Each of the saxophone’s are designed but a certain country
Graham S — Google review
I can't believe I almost didn't see the view as I drove past on my way to the train station.
Luka S — Google review
A great tourist attraction on top of the Meuse river close to Citadel of Dinant connected via a cable car. The bridge has multiple saxophone representing countries. History says the saxophones were set out along the bridge the placement in a tribute to the countries of the European Union in 2010. It was in that year when it was celebrated here the Europe Sax and when it was decided that each saxophone would represent to a European country.
Ajay M — Google review
This is a bridge on the river Meuse. When in Dinant, you will see this bridge while exploring the city and the surroundings. Would suggest to park the car and take a walk on the bridge and the surroundings. A sunny day gives all the more charm to this city. A few more places to explore around this bridge. Walking around would be a good choice. One of the good places to spend a relaxed time with family & friends. Recommend it.
Amith G — Google review
Very nicely decorated bridge with different saxophones. It's a view point to get beautiful pictures of Dinant. It's in the heart of the city. You can't miss it. Next to the bridge is the statue of Charles de Gaulle.

Maison Leffe is a captivating beer museum located in the heart of Dinant, Belgium. Housed within the former Bethleem convent, which has been transformed into the upscale La Merveilleuse Hotel, this museum offers an immersive experience that delves into the rich brewing tradition of Leffe dating back to 1240. Visitors can explore the history of this renowned beer brand through interactive displays and touch-screen exhibits.
The most amazing experience!!! The tour only costs 15 euros and it includes an interactive history tour about the brewery and the beer tasting with Leffe beer glasses as gifts!! The staff members were amazing and the atmosphere was lively. 10/10 would come here again!!! Definitely go visit if you are in Dinant
Elene S — Google review
Self guided tour was not that special but for €15,- not much more to be expected if it also includes a glass and a beer. The patio view is nice and it’s a good quick stop for a beer kind of experience
Nick E — Google review
The museum itself is nothing special at all. Its self guided and you can walk through in 5 minutes. But for the 15 eur you get 1 free beer. A full glass. And also a welcome present. And dogs are allowed. The tasting area is in a lovely grassy area. So, its worth it. Free parking directly in front. You can of course skip the musuem and pay for beer. They also have some small bites.
Paul H — Google review
Very disappointing experience. €15 per person to see a gimmicky video tour (lasts about 10 minutes) which is completely lacking in interest. Just watching a boring video on a screen mounted in a picture frame. You get a beer included but it’s a small measure with very moody service. All in all a very expensive way to have a beer. We left feeling ripped off and offended by the 2 rude ladies who were ‘serving’. I did wonder if they were having a bet with each other on who could get away with being the rudest!
Amanda B — Google review
Nice place to learn about the history of Leffe beer. Entry prices are fine. For €15,00 you get access to the Maison Leffe, a free gift( beautiful Leffe glass) and a free Leffe beer at the bar. Enjoyed it a lot.
Eddy S — Google review
It's not a factory nor a brewery, just a little museum. There is not much to see but they explain Leffe's hystory and their products. A beer and a glass are included in the price

These five artificial lakes are a popular place for fishing, kayaking & windsurfing, plus biking.
absolutely fantastic trip, we love such walkings, part of the route goes along the rush road, but mostly it goes in the woods or by a quiet road, the dam is nice, big, water is clean, we found many crayfish there! we did the route marked black on the map, parked at the parking lot Falemprise (for free), in the middle of the route in the village Cerfontaine we had an excellent Chimay beer and bought some meal in Carrefour, in total it took us 6 hours including a small picnic, I recommend to visit this place, we will be back for sure... pros: you can make this route be bike without any problems...

Located in the heart of Chimay, Hostel Poteaupré Espace Chimay offers a convenient and tranquil rural setting with beautiful walking paths nearby. The hostel is known for its recent, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable infrastructure. The on-site restaurant provides an authentic dining experience with delicious cuisine. Visitors can explore the history and brewing process of Trappist beers at the espace Chimay museum, followed by a tasting session.
We stopped in the restaurant to drink some beer, eat some cheese, and purchase some bottles/glasses to go. Contrary to some other recent reviews, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even activated the automatic door to the patio on a cold Fall day so that our kids could make use of the play structures (I may have also climbed to the top of the big one). Everyone knows the beer is fire but the cheese and burgers were also prime. Highly recommended.
Seth S — Google review
We had an amazing vacation. The hotel is in a calm forest place, nice walking around. The beer, cheese, and food were delicious. The room was clean, amazing bathroom. The only disadvantage was the strong noise outside (I think the engine of the air conditioning), so we couldn't sleep with an open window. I would also ask to add the SUGAR-FREE cereal for breakfast and vegetables if possible.
Nat G — Google review
Stopped only at the Espace Chimay, the shop and the bar for the tasting. Nothing wrong with the beer, everyone knows it’s legendary. The shop is also well stocked, and make sure you have a look at the deli counter. What’s disappointing is the Chimay Experience. For being a beer tour is not very informative, there is no audio, very little video, a weird dark room where you’re supposed to grope objects, and that’s it. Compared to other brewery tours I’ve been to (and it’s quite a few) it is probably the only one I would absolutely not recommend.
Alessandro H — Google review
Arrived for the beer and wine experience. I love Chimay triple beers and was looking forward to trying out the 150 and Doree (two I’ve not tried before). First issue, no dogs allowed, so I missed the experience part of the trip - resolved by the hostess that allowed us to slip through onto the terrace. Second issue, no food on the terrace because threatening rain clouds. Resolved (kinda) as they did permit us splitting the table and then allowed us to at least get the beer and cheese tasting. Third issue. The beers were not placed in order (luckily our waiter spotted that and corrected it) but he missed that the cheese was way off too. No care and attention paid in the bar which is worrying.

Great way to experience Chimay beers and cheeses … store closes at 6p , buy your stuff before you eat !

We tried the 5 chimay beers and a small tapas style board. Only thing that lets it down is the shop, cost way more than the supermarkets, even though we drove to them.

Place Ducale is an extraordinary square, modeled after the Place de Vosges in Paris. It's a great spot to enjoy a drink or meal on a sunny evening, exuding a special charm. The square features sand and a small pool for children, offering games, entertainment, and music for adults. With its Louis XIII style buildings and surrounding bars and restaurants, it provides an opportunity to imagine life 400 years ago.
Even though it seems strange to review a public square, I feel that I must. The place was lively and fun, with lots of nice restaurants and fun for young and old. We booked a stay in on of the houses around the square. If you don't need a lot of sleep, this is very authentic. Be aware, though, the bell of the clock tower goes off every 15 minutes!

Beautiful place with several activities happening, huge sand pit for volleyball, where our son ended up playing a lot, very kids friendly and many excellent options for food just around this square.

A nice and beautiful place. Several restaurants and bar on the place. During my visit, works were carryout.

Huge cobbled square surrounded by tall 19th Century buildings of similar design. Markets held here on certain days.

Beautiful architecture and relaxed bars/restaurants surround this large historic focal point of the old town. A great place to soak up the atmosphere, if you don't mind the large marquee which dominates one half of the square.

A beautiful square. I was there with 'Frolicked' for the international puppet festival and it was always packed with buskers and shows and lovely people. The bars around the square are also lovely; recommend 'La Mantoue'.

Fabulous, our second stay. Incredible place. Tastefully renovated into a beautiful hotel. History buffs will love it. Especially the museum part of the hotel. Breakfast is plentiful and our evening meal was quite elegant. Staff are friendly and helpful. Stunning highly recommend 👍

It's a beautiful setting, a mix of old and new. You can relax here with your pets. However, it would be good to pay attention to the cleanliness of the cups and spoons.

Fantastic hotel in a medieval fortress! The rooms were super ~ comfortable, well appointed & beautifully decorated. I loved the rough stone original walls around the hotel. Less impressed with the “fine dining” experience. The food looked impressive but was average. Unfortunately, for a group of 12 international guests, we had a waitress that didn’t speak English which made things difficult for us & her. Breakfast was also disappointing. As a gluten free eater they did accommodate my diet but this meant removing things from the dish & not adding something else! My choices were limited due to a lack of adaptation. So I had a plate of meat in sauce for my main course! Surely a fine dining restaurant can be a bit creative! *Note to kitchen: the amusebouche with couscous is not GF - couscous is made of flour.

Lovely hotel rich in history. Rooms have large, comfortable beds. It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this. They also have a castle tour with some great views and an escape room on property as well. Overall amazing experience.

What a wonderfull museum. We recieved some extra information, had a nice contact with the lady at the entrance (thanks for finding my lost cap). We're Belgians, so anything to do with beer is yummy. And their beer was. Yummy. Go visit and taste. I only took some pictures that show little of the museum but trust me, it's stuffed with giant big brass machines, loads of memorabilia and beer related stuff from the last millenia 'till yesterday.
Carl N — Google review
Great museum. It's located in a beautiful old building and you really get to learn a lot about the history of beer and how its made. It also has a bar at the end of the museum to taste some beers yourself
Rens — Google review
A lot of interesting things to see and learn about beer brewing; ingredients, methods, tools and machinery, bottles, and both technical as well as cultural history. Unfortunately most detailed information as well as all data presented digitally is made available in French only. The main panels on the wall also include short summaries in English and German as well, but the lack of detail is really a pity! The museum is strongly advised to provide full translations as hand-out to improve the overall experience of foreign guests. The location and building are anyhow worth a visit, as is the small in-house brasserie that offers a broad selection of beers (also to take home, with in many cases their specific glasses as well). Nevertheless you should try their own locally brewed superb beer!
TheThird C — Google review
Extremely thoughtful and informative displays with information in French and English. Excellent overview of the history of brewing, and the shop/cafe at the end has a wide selection of beers.

Not what we were expecting, it wasn't even an old brewery. Not my fave place.

It was quite interesting and we found all the advertising memorabilia good. But it was a shame that not all of the explanation was in different languages only in French. We had the idea that we missed out and didn't know what all the exibits were. Also afterwards we thought we would be able to taste different beers for a price but we were only able to buy different beer which we felt was quite expensive.

Very nice parc. Well maintaned and friendly staff. Lots of animals to see with possibility to see them feed the animals. The hammocs are also a big hit!
Niels D — Google review
This is a fabulous little wildlife park, so if in the vicinity it's well worth 2 or 3 hours looking round. Huge parking area - no height barriers - we paid 12.50€ each. No English leaflets/boards, but most animals are self explanatory (!). All in woodland, little trails leading to enclosures. Amazing wolf packs. Plenty to see, with a little 'farm type' animals area, then more unusual animals. Birds of prey, reptiles, bats ... and various displays during the day. A great little cafe, seating inside and out. Play areas for children. Gift shop at entrance. Toilets etc at entrance and in the Park. Probably slippery underfoot in wet weather as much of yhe walking is on compressed soil. Lots of benches, undercover seating etc. Really excellent value (& we've stayed overnight in the carpark - did get permission!)
Polly W — Google review
Nice park. Not the biggest - but the staff are nice and very knowledgeable. Nice playground and high quality cafeteria with focus on locally sourced ingredients.
Cathrine R — Google review
I agree with many of the other reviews that this is a great place to visit with a family. While the park is not as big as some zoos I've been to, the animals seem much happier, and the shows and feeding times allow you to easily spend an entire afternoon. The zookeepers are very knowledgeable and approachable to ask questions. Beware that this park is on hilly terrain and not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, we luckily had a nice child carrier backpack to carry our two year old around in. The hammock rope playground is great, even for a two year old and their parents! We had a great time!
Pieter C — Google review
Splendid park within the forest. Raccoons, wolves, farm animals, owls, birds of prey and a small indoor section. Feeding moments for the raccoons and the wolves were cool and informative. The adventure parc with hanging nets was a lot of unexpected additional fun.

Ass Renaissance Clairvaux Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded by Bernard de Clairvaux in 1115. It has served as a high-security prison since Napoleon's time. Worthwhile visiting this place and walking in the footsteps of Renoir, especially in summer when he visited also. You get the feel of the simplicity of the village divided by the river, and to be inspired. Good to do the walking tour, just follow the red signs around the village, takes you to all the major parts. Enjoy!!!

They have made a great program for everyone to have a dynamic couple of hours walking the city of Essoyes and discovering the life of the man and artist. Renoir's House, Gardens, his studio, the cemetery where you can find his grave and that of his wife plus the cultural center where you can watch a short film in English/ French and see the cute exhibition. Very friendly people/youth greeting us as we passed by. All in all, an enjoyable and educational experience for adults and young people. I say just come to this city. You will end up with a bunch of beautiful pictures to remember the visit. Audio guides available. Credit cards accepted. English-speaking staff.

I love visiting this little museum in Essoyes, the foundation that manages the Renoir estate and studio do such a great job. The staff is particularly friendly, speak English (thankfully, still learning French) and they are really nice and helpful. We chose to take along the head-sets and I'm glad we did! The life and times of Renoir is fascinating how this artist saw real life and painted it. I'm so glad he did. One of my absolute favorite painters who also LIVED his life shows in the walking museum through the town. You will learn so much about his first love ART as well as his daily life in this "vacation" or resting spot for him to reflect. Every time I am in Champagne~Ardenne I include this on my itinerary because everyone enjoys it so much. This precious little town too, makes me want to rent an apartment and just walk the streets on a Saturday morning and step back in time.

Grottes de Bèze

Tours
Sightseeing Tours
I have never seen water so crystal clear. A great deal of effort is being made to preserve this environment. The underground temperature is kept at 12 degrees Celsius year-round. There are no fish. This is an adventure that can only be experienced during this season. During the winter, the water level rises and it becomes impossible to enter the cave.
Ayumi — Google review
Visited at the end of April. The town itself is well worth your time. Meandering local streets filled with centuries old buildings by the river and a walk up to the grotto takes you back to other times. The grotto was an interesting side visit especially since you get in a boat to meander up and down the cave section that has an interesting history both timeless and fascinating. Very quiet tourist wise that time of year so no battle for parking or queues to get in. Kids will love the boat ride in the “dark".

A nice view of the cave with a great story written around the cave. Very entertaining, cool to sit in a boat in a cave without an engine. Once it falls silent its quite eerie. Didn't know what to expect going in, but exceeded any expectation I had. The town outside and the source of the river are also very picturesque and worth a visit. Sadly not really a place to get a nice lunch when we visited.

Nestled on the exterior of the stunning Eglise Notre-Dame in Dijon, the Owl of Dijon (La Chouette de Dijon) is a charming stone sculpture that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This small yet significant owl is not just an artistic feature; it’s believed to grant wishes when gently stroked, making it a must-visit for those seeking a bit of magic during their travels.
Cute little owl on the side of the cathedral. So many ppl touched it... you can't really see the owl anymore. Follow the golden plaque arrows around the city to find it
Taehee K — Google review
Cool and iconic in Dijon... easy to find. It's nice to find it without Google maps to make it for Cool... just follow the signs on the street floor.
Luis G — Google review
A modern old town, just follow the golden arrows for sightseeing. The shops are neat and orderly. I saw people slipping after the rain because the floor is slippery. It is recommended to wear shoes a good shoes. There is a restaurant that supports Down syndrome. I recommend you try it.
Jiraporn C — Google review
Palm-sized and polished by countless hands, the little owl carved into Notre-Dame’s wall turns a side lane into a ritual. Touch with your left hand and make a wish; the brass pavement plate with the owl logo marks the stop and small arrows carry you along Dijon’s Parcours de la Chouette. This is the route’s namesake and most photographed moment: modest stone, big civic idea. I like how the trail knits small details to major landmarks - marker, brief engagement, onward wayfinding - so one carving speaks to grander sites across the old town.
Loo Y — Google review
Super nice tour especially for kids which are keen on discovering the next owl of Dijon on the way. All nice attractions can be seen on this journey.

I like it - brings good luck if you place your right hand on it :) A tip from a local: Once there, make sure to check the rooftop of the building to the right of the owl, you'll find beautiful owl and cat.. keeping an eye on the city ;) (photo below)

The Museum of Fine Arts Dijon is located in the Palais Des Ducs et des Etats de Bourbogne, a complex of buildings with different architectural styles. It houses remarkable collections from the 14th to 19th century, including art from Antiquity to the 21st century, Middle Ages, and Renaissance.
Beautiful museum! Spacious with beautiful displays of paintings, sculptures, and archeological artifacts, located in the historical section of Dijon. I spent three hours here and did not see everything, of course time spent depends on your interest. The staff was very friendly, the cost was free! (Thank you!) Museum hours were wonderful, open until 6:30! Highly recommend!

The rooms are beautiful. Lots of classic old works, a few modern works, so not very impressive for me. Admission is free, so it's worth seeing the architecture. Beware, there's a trap on the first floor, you'll never get out without asking... we weren't the only ones. Fortunately, the lovely security staff are there to help.

We were greeted by very friendly staff who explained the museum's layout. This museum is large, entry is free, and there are several floors of exhibits to see. The grounds around the museum are picturesque as well. Enjoy!

A free art museum! It was a treat, of course. I'm not an expert, but I think their collection was very good, based mostly on the Duc's collection. Don't miss the Duc and Duchess's tombs! Everything was in french and it wasn't very crowded, even on a Saturday and even with people fleeing from the rain, like we were.
Erika H — Google review
The Best Things in Life Are Free Well, that’s certainly true for the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. I first discovered it a few years ago while tracking works by Vieira da Silva and Nicolas de Staël—and since then, it has become an almost obligatory stop on the way to or back from the South. Just three hours from Luxembourg, and each visit brings something new. This time, a megalomaniac Chinese painter exhibited right in front of the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy—a juxtaposition as unexpected as it is striking. And if you’re traveling with children, don’t miss the fantastical animals of Pompon. A place where history, discovery, and wonder are all free of charge.

The Dijon Museum of Fine Arts is well organised and an example of a must see museum outside of Paris, London, etc. There's everything from beautifully curated medieval art to sculpture to art and photography of the 1900s and 2000s. What a beautiful chateau - our favorite chateau tour & tasting in Beaune! Our guide was so nice and I learned so much about the region in that short amount of time. Definitely book the exclusive tour for a tasting of 8 great wines in a private room of their Premiers and Grands Crus!
Jon B — Google review
I was there last weekend and I have to say the whole experience isn't done with love. The chairs and tables outside are not welcoming, you pay 55€ for a tasting of 6 wines and there is a very very small amount given to you in the glass. I have never experienced this in any wine tasting. There was not much context given (grape varieties / barrique etc.). The glasses are cheap - I actually have to say the glass because you get one glass and after the red wines some water is poured into it and you can rinse it before tasting white wine. For this price I would expect new glasses, maybe a glass of water with the tasting or some bread. You choose the better option if you just order a bottle of wine in a bar.
Nici E — Google review
Excellent wine tasting and tour by Benjamin. We don’t speak French and we were lucky to have a tour guide who speaks English perfectly. The Chateaux surroundings are beautiful, the wines are special, and Benjamin explains every detail about the wine production process and the different plot/regions in Burgundy. A true Burgundy wine experience!

Churches & Cathedrals
Chalon Cathedral is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, with its Neo-Gothic facade and two newer towers from the 1800s alongside elements dating back to the 1000s. The cathedral is located in a lovely square with cafes and a charming fountain nearby. It's part of the cathedral close of Saint Vincent, which includes the Bishops Palace, cloister, and cannons houses. Despite needing some renovation in parts, it remains a popular site for both locals and tourists.
Masterpiece. Brautifull inside and outside. Recommend a visit.
Artur V — Google review
The cathedral was built between 1092 and 1220 as a Roman style church but gothic additions were made later in the 16th century. The interior was rather dark but at some places they have built sensors that switch on lights when you get near. In front of the church is a lively square with restaurants
Seimen B — Google review
Nice and climstic cathedral, although it needs a general renovation in certain parts.
Lufix — Google review
Popular site for locals and tourists. Located in old part of Chalon and near businesses selling clothes, etc. Review Google in your choice of languages before visiting. The open space in front of the cathedrale is usually filled with tables and large umbrellas, which makes for ugly photos.
Mike S — Google review
The real highlight for me was the cloisters behind the cathedral. You have to exit the cathedral and turn left to visit them.

Just surprisingly beuatifull. 1000 year old cathedral. Beautiful location with Lovely square just by the cathedral with tables and chairs and cafes.Nice fountain too.Lovely architecture and great for photos. The cathedral close of Saint Vincent, seat of the former bishopric of Chalon-sur-Saone, is made up the the Bishop’s Palace, cathedral, cloister and cannon’s houses. Construction of the cathedral started in 1090 in the Romanesque style, but today is characterised by its Gothic elevation and neo-Gothic facade. The simple layout of the cathedral is composed of three naves, a chevet without ambulatory and side chapels. Come and discover the collection of Romanesque capitals, the Brussels tapestry dating from 1510 and a 16th century stained glass window. For the visually handicapped there is a tactile model available. Today, the St Vincent’s Cathedral cloister is the only canons cloister conserved in Burgundy and Franche-Comte. Its exterior walls probably date from around 1000, which makes it even more exceptional. Three wings with trilobe arched bays dating from the 14th century and ribbed vaults from the 15th century. The north wing is a contemporary reconstruction of the gallery that disappeared in the 19th century. In the spirit of the mediaeval and existing 19th century capitals, it was decorated with sculptures on the capitals in Saint-Marc stone (Burgundy limestone) made by the sculptor Laetitia de Bazelaire, representing animals, the virtues or the 5 senses. Accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Room Escape Games
We did the Samurai room and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having played quite a few rooms, this room ranked among the best. The setting was an homage to many things Japanese and lovingly crafted with tons of Japanese paraphernalia. The puzzles were also well designed, and there were some really clever mechanics that I haven't seen before and won't spoil.
Alan M — Google review
Been twice now and done the photo theme and pirate theme rooms. We will definitely be back for the 3rd room and are pleased to know there will be a 4th one coming soon. The rooms are very well thought out with almost every step being unique to each room. The staff will gently guide you if required in order to keep the pace of the game fun. They won't let you win for free though you still need to think! Once you've included the intro and the photo at the end it's a great way to spent 2 hours. The newest room is actually a 90 min time limit.

Churches & Cathedrals
Abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus is a medieval Romanesque church known for its stunning stone vaults, numerous statues, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. The abbey has a rich history dating back to the 6th century when a church was first built on the site of a former Roman army camp. It gained prominence in 875 when the remains of Saint Philibert were interred here.
Impressive medieval structure with some wonderful discoveries inside. The ancient stone walls, interesting windows and the crypt all convey the time of construction. In the crypt are some columns that are Roman in origin from a temple predating the abbey.
Gary R — Google review
It is one of the most beautiful constructions of medieval times. Best atmosphere and vibes ✨️
Pruthvi S — Google review
This church and Abbey is one of the best preserved in France. It is surrounded by it's own walls and gates which gives it an impression of a fotres. Already in the 6th century a church was built here in a place where there used to be a Roman castrum or army camp. The Abbey got a boost in 875 when the remains of Saint Philibert were put to rest in this church and gave it it's name. The church is sober on the interior but has some interesting mosaics behind the main altar. At the entrance is a small exhibition. The Abbey has a nice central courtyard
Seimen B — Google review
Beautiful Building, well worth seeing the main church and surroundings. The building has a special feel to it, as you enter the nave (main part of the church)

One of the most amazing churches I have been to, and I have been to hundreds or thousands of them. Beautifully restored, but not too much changed from its original state. Wonderful natural light. Not too crowded. Amazing architecture. Interesting, beautiful town that is not too touristy (at least in January, when I visited). Great, inexpensive lunch at the restaurant just outside (to the south of) the main entrance. If you like old buildings or Romanesque architecture, you should not miss Tournus.

Authentic castle with a lot of history from 950 till 16th century. Recommend the audio guide for the extra information.

A beautiful medieval site... The castle dates back to the 13th century and is partially restored.
Louis C — Google review
Visited with my family with 3 kids and grandpa & grandma. Had a wonderful day. People at the location were very nice and friendly.
Kasper H — Google review
Brancion village is an interesting place to visit, but it could be a lot more interesting for visitors if basic facilities like toilets were available. Due to Convid 19 the very basic toilet just outside the village was off limits. Once inside the village/ castle complexe there is nothing...The car park is located a good 250 metres before the main entrance. Parking is free and entrance into the village too. If you wish to visit the castle it is 6 euros. Well worth it I feel. There is a great view from the old church building of the valley below. Some houses are lived in, but most seem empty. There is a small café selling drinks. Staff in the ticket office are nice, but there were no books about the history of the village or castle, which is a pity.....
John M — Google review
The village and Château de Brancion are like a true journey back in time. Nestled in the heart of Burgundy, this beautifully preserved medieval site has a unique atmosphere. The cobbled streets, ancient stone buildings, and sweeping views over the surrounding vineyards make it a breathtaking place to explore. The château, standing proudly above the village, offers a glimpse into life centuries ago. A visit here is both cultural and enchanting, perfect for all ages. An absolute must-see for anyone wanting to experience the authenticity and heritage of Burgundy with the most beautiful view of Bourgogne

Rock of Solutré is a towering limestone rock that offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. The hike to the top takes about 30 minutes and is popular among visitors. The trail provides fantastic views of Fuisse and the Solutre Rock, as well as vineyards along the way. It's a relatively easy walk from the parking area, making it suitable for families with children. Additionally, there is a museum nearby to complement the experience.
A beautiful day and perfect weather.

Great and easy hiking trail to climb to the top; the scenery along the trail overlooks vineyards and little hamlets and is awesome for picture taking. The view from the top of the rock is breathtaking!

Beautiful view from the top! Nice walk. It took us with 2 kids (8/9 years) about 90 minutes in total, including chilling for 30 minutes at the top.
Jonathan C — Google review
Popular hike it seems, quite a lot of people did the walk to the top which has a very nice view over the area. It took us +-30mins, for 1.7km. You can start at one of the (free) parkings, there should be enough place. We did the descent via Combe Robat til the town of Vergisson. Finally through the vineyards back to the parking. You can follow the yellow marks. This direction is very quiet and more fun. Our daughters of 8 and 11 joined us, and in total we walked 6km.

Very nice place to visit to get a view over the pouilly fussé vineyards. Quite an easy walk up from the parking place. Apparently Francois Mitterrand used to walk the hill once a year. There is also a museum, which was closed when we were there

Touroparc Zoo is a great combination of a zoo, water park, and amusement park, making it perfect for families with younger children. The zoo houses various animals such as monkeys, giraffes, elephants, hippos, zebras, birds, and reptiles. The attractions cater to kids up to around 12 years old and include a carousel, train rides, museums, and seasonal water slides. Visitors can also enjoy the monorail and the baby touro river.
Great park, animals well fed and taken care of, did the private visit where we could feed several animals ans it was amazing. Staff was great too.

We had a great time there with our son of 6 years old. It's not too big, but still many animals to spot! Besides animals, there are also many attractions for the little ones! We had a great day.
Jenny L — Google review
Great day trip for all especially in July and August when the water park is open. New slides in the pool are excellent for kids under 7 and new games are fun. I highly recommend it.
Pierre C — Google review
More for children, not really for the animals We saw a zookeeper use a fire extinguisher on monkeys from the side to keep them appart We had to pay for the waterpark too, eventhough we did not want to use it. It was all in the price and no other options were available, it was misleading. But he parking is free.

I visited Touroparc Zoo a couple of weeks ago to celebrate my birthday, and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! What made this experience so special was how hands-on it was. Unlike other soigneur experiences where you barely get to interact with the animals, Christophe made sure we were involved and engaged the whole way through. You can tell he genuinely cares for the all the reptiles and takes great pride in sharing that with others. We had the chance to see so many incredible species up close, and he gave us a fascinating look into what it’s really like to work behind the scenes at a zoo. Thank you, Christophe, for making my birthday so memorable. Your enthusiasm made the visit come alive! Highly recommend this experience to anyone, whether you're an animal lover or just curious. Truly a 10/10!
Ahaeli C — Google review
Very! nice park but absolutely ridiculous how weird they are about the height in the attractions, when accompanied by an adult. I was not allowed to drive the horses attraction with my baby who really got to love this attraction in Parc le pal. We stood 15 minutes in the burning sun. When it was our turn he pointed at the sign saying my baby should be 90cm. At Parc le pal we did this attraction multiple times without an issue. This ruined the moment. All other safe attractions you can do as parent with your kid, is not allowed, really frustrating. The wild water attraction or the mono rail are allowed :/ Please check your height restrictions... Everything else is really nice, but above gave everything a bad taste.
Dylan M — Google review
We visited on a cooler weekday in September and the place was very quiet which was perfect for us to see all the animals It's clear the animals are well cared for and healthy The rides and water park looked good but they were not available this late in the season

The VIP and Soigneur experiences are totally worth it. We have done the VIP visit twice and the both times was super amazing. Highly recommended. We chose to do the Soigneur experience in the reptile house and we're extremely happy with our choice. It was very very interactive and we learned so many interesting facts from Christoph. Thanks so much for the amazing experience with Curu, the snakes, lizards, iguana, crocodiles, and turtles!

The Royal Monastery of Brou is a flamboyant Gothic-style monastery renowned for its ornate marble royal tombs and oak choir stalls. Founded in the early 1500s as a burial place for the Dukes and their families, it was established by Margaret of Austria. Visitors can explore the vast interior for a small fee, with interactive displays and videos bringing its history to life. The monastery houses a large collection of artworks, traditional wooden toys, and intricate architecture.
Built in the 1500's, this is a magnificent monument to tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly spoke French and English.

Very beautiful monastery with a rich history, unsurprising given how old Europe is. And this one has been well maintained, even hosting music and arts shows outside of just the walk around tour of the monastery itself. Obvious ongoing upkeep and restoration work is happening which is great given that this monastery is close to 500 years old. Doesn't look a day over 300. 🤪

A beautiful historical place where to spend a pleasant and interesting couple of hours. The architecture is impressive, the place is big and there is plenty of things to see: the church, the various rooms, the ancient tools used for the building, some historical facts etc... there was also a room with an art exhibition. Spent a wonderful afternoon there!

When we arrived there we asked if we could go up - they have set the tower up as a mini museum with about 4 floors before you reach the rooftop. The stairs are very steep (beware) but the view from the top is well worth it. Accessing the tower costs a mere €2 per person (they take card payment) and is free for children.

Pérouges Cité Médiévale

Tourist information center
Sights & Landmarks
Pérouges Cité Médiévale is a small medieval town located on a hill east of Lyon, just a 45-minute drive away. The town was rebuilt in the mid-1400s and has been historically significant for trade and defense. Approximately 400 people live within its walls, and there are some tourist-friendly businesses such as restaurants and shops. A two-hour guided tour offers insights into the town's 500-year history.
Well preserved village. The architecture is unique. The food was so good. They are so many souvenir shops but we are not lucky. That day was rainy and most of the shops were closed. Don’t forget to say Hi to a fat cat🐱

Pérouges is a beautifully preserved medieval village that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Cobbled streets, stone houses, ivy-covered facades — every corner is photogenic and full of charm. It’s not big, but that’s part of its beauty: you can wander slowly, take in the atmosphere, and imagine what life was like centuries ago. There are lovely artisan shops, small cafés, and a few restaurants where you can enjoy local specialties — especially the famous galette de Pérouges, which is absolutely worth tasting warm with a bit of sugar caramelized on top. It’s peaceful, authentic, and only a short drive from Lyon — perfect for a half-day or slow afternoon escape. Go early or late in the day if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy the serenity of the place. Highly recommended for anyone who loves history, quiet beauty, and timeless villages.

The Caves of La Balme

Heritage preservation
Storied cliff caves open for tours of prehistoric relics, limestone pillars & a frescoed chapel.
This place was honestly a surprise. Around 50 km from Lyon, and once you're inside, it's like a hidden world. Big chambers, tunnels, underground lakes...quiet and slightly spooky in a good way. Every spot has a story to tell. The Lake inside looked amazing, and the small maze section was fun. It’s self-guided so you can take your time. Not too crowded, which made it even better. Just wear proper shoes as it can be a bit slippery. If you're near Lyon and want to see something different, this is totally worth it. Note: Skip the maze if tight spaces freak you out or if you're a big guy, you might get stuck!😉
