The surrounding gardens are also beautiful and add to the overall appeal of the area. Its architecture is unique and unusual, giving visitors a sense of stepping back in time. When the weather is nice, Rue des Chats is particularly lovely to stroll along.
Impressive medieval narrow street. What I love about small cities and towns in central europe. Visited a few years back.

The valley is special, u actually see cats around it ..

This was listed as a significant tourist spot in Troyes but it’s just an alleyway. There was a shop selling cat-themed gifts and a restaurant called Le Chat but that’s it. I really don’t get it.

(Translated by Google) It is a narrow alley that apparently got its name because cats could weld from one building to another. In reality I did not find anything particularly interesting, apart from the half-timbered houses. Located at 1 place Saint Pierre, Cellier Saint Pierre is a must-visit working distillery in Troyes. The short tour provided by the knowledgeable staff offers rich information about the ancient artisanal processes still used today to produce fantastic liqueurs. Visitors can stand among the stills in the distilling room and feel the warmth from the wood-fired oven powering the distillation process. Afterward, guests can enjoy a tasting in the shop.
Fantastic visit to this working distillery. A short tour from one of the working members of the distillery was rich in information. In the distilling room you stand right amongst the stills, and feel the warmth from the wood fired ovend used to power the distillation. Ancient artisanal proses conserved and used to great effect to this day producing a liqueur which is just fantastic. Tasting offered in the shop after the tour.

Great welcoming, an expected gem just at the corner of the cathedral and at 500m from cite des vitrail. Troy is well known for its vitrail but who knew that they have a local distillery for one of the amazing invention which is not to miss, THE PRUNELLE,,, 7 stars for this shop.

Chateau de Vaux, located in the Southern part of the Aube departement, offers a captivating experience for visitors. The manor presents an intriguing mystery game set in its enchanting surroundings, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an immersive and thrilling evening. While still undergoing renovations, the castle's music hall on the ground floor has been fully restored, offering a glimpse into its rich history. Visitors can also explore the basement and stables, gaining insight into the ongoing restoration efforts.
Great find, not far from the motorway ,worth a stop on the way down from the uk. The main house is open to view as are some of the outbuildings. Info is avaliable in English and the people that work there speak English also. Worth a look
Matthew T — Google review
The grounds are enormous and with some interesting buildings adjacent to the main building which is undergoing some considerable reconstructions. Pity the cafe not open on a Tuesday but a nice place to visit for a couple of hours.
BigMickF — Google review
Chateau de Vaux is a beautiful manor in the Southern part of the Aube département. Upon entry (9€ per adult) you receive a map of the castle and a game to find the golden bell. I did not follow the game and only explored the site. The renovations are still ongoing and only the music hall was fully restored on the ground floor. Further the basement might be the most catching to see. The stables were also open. It is a nice place to visit and I am sure it will be eben more interesting when fully renovated. The staff was always very friendly and helpful.
Philipp S — Google review
Very friendly reception, beautiful estate.
Ferry B — Google review
Not exactly what you would expect to see for 9 euro. Only ground floor open and not much inside, the outbuildings and the court looks ok but again a bit pricey.
Petrica T — Google review
Magnifique endroit pour fêtes et mariage. I highly recommend this place for anyone from outside France also who wants to get married or do a big party there. They offer up to 88 sleeping arrangements and receptions for hundreds and hundreds.
Charles-Etienne R — Google review
It is very much a work in progress, but I enjoyed learning about it and seeing it in its current state. I feel like this will give more appreciation for the finished product, as well as a good opportunity to see the reality of a structure that's that old without proper upkeep.
Sean R — Google review
Quite very well renovated. All the pictures and plans for the past renovation aka things still to be done are on display. Great for a wedding venue.

Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
Nigloland is a seasonal theme park located in the Cote des Bar region, offering an unforgettable experience for families. With four distinct villages to explore, visitors can enjoy 43 thrilling attractions suitable for all ages. The park's well-maintained grounds and friendly staff create a welcoming atmosphere. While the rides provide excitement for adults, there are also plenty of options tailored to younger guests.
Theme park that has everything for the family ranging from rides for thrill seekers and rides for the little ones. We spent the whole day here from open to close and managed to cover most rides, except the ones for really little kids. The queues are manageable in the morning, by afternoon, the queues started to get quite long. Download the app to be able to check how long are the queue times before deciding to walk over to the ride! Helps to plan your day better!
Jas H — Google review
My favourite amusement park to go with my family with two boys age 4 and 5. Lots of rides for them to go in and enjoy. Maximum lengtu of a lineup for us this day was 15 minutes.
Jim G — Google review
Wow. This is one of the most well run theme parks I‘ve ever been to. It’s on the smaller side, but it offers enough to spend a whole day here. The whole park is very clean, ticket and park food prices are very fair and the ride operations are lightning quick. I unfortunately visited on of the most crowded days of the year, but because this park is so well run, I got everything done including 17 rides on their main attraction Alpina Blitz. I highly recommend a visit, and I‘m excited for their new coaster in 2027.
Johan P — Google review
Nigloland is one of those parks that’s big enough to be exciting, yet small enough to stay cozy and easy to enjoy. It’s clean, nicely kept, and full of charm, perfect for a relaxed family day. There can be queues for the main attractions, but honestly, which park doesn’t have them during school holidays? What I really love is how balanced it feels: not just for little kids or thrill-seeking teens, but great for families with children of all ages. Even toddlers can find something fun to ride. During Halloween, it’s especially atmospheric, colorful, cheerful, and full of small details that make you smile. And by the way, it’s in Champagne, so technically, between rides with the kids, you can still sneak off for a tasting or two. To each their own pleasure. A warm, well-run park. Five stars, happily.
Ogeron A — Google review
Nigloland is wonderfull blend between a fully fine to be old fashioned theme park for toddlers and older. You got everything for what you pay. It's clean, you have decent lines for all kind of attractions and rollercoasters. Spend a entire day in there. And it was a good surprise. An excellent ratio quality/price. If you plan to stay for a whole week end you should definitely stay at Hotel des pirates. The props are fun, the owners come to visit oftenly the customers. The restaurants has everything you'd like to eat. For starters you can enjoy the garden to take a drink while your kids are playing in the big playground just aside to where you can bask in the late afternoon light in your seat sipping your cocktail ! A nice stay for any family
Sébastien M — Google review
Such an amazing experience with family, good for the little ones and also very fun for the adults. This is one of the most beautiful and well kept and maintained attraction park I’ve ever been to in my life. You can really tell they keep their maintenance and housekeeping to a really high standard. All staff were also very friendly. The rides are all amazing. The African “safari” on the boat was a highlight. So entertaining. So in awe of what they have created at this park. The gardens are also beautiful, reminds me of the botanic gardens.
Abdullah A — Google review
Great Theme Park, went here but it was raining yet i had fun!

Nigloland is really very good. We stayed in the Cabainia cabins and we’ve stayed in the pirates hotel before. We’ve also done Astérix and Disney before and the quality here is much better. The decor, rides, waiting times all great. In particular their team are very nice. They do a very good job.

Château de Tanlay

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Château de Tanlay is a stunning example of French Renaissance architecture, featuring Italian-inspired details such as pyramids on the access bridge and a wall surrounding the Green Court. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, this castle is surrounded by a moat, adding to its picturesque charm. Unlike many aristocrats who favored living at Versailles, the Marquis and Marquise de Tanlay enjoyed strolling through the castle's grounds.
Awesome place with many centuries of history. Eloise our guide was instrumental to make our visit a very special experience. Frescoes are simply breath taking!
Nikolai T — Google review
The château is located in a very small village with limited options for dining or sightseeing nearby. Only a small part of the garden is open to visitors, as most areas are private and people live there, which also means photos inside are not allowed. The guide shares some historical information, but the visit is quite short. It may be interesting if you are already in the area, but I wouldn’t recommend traveling long distances just for this visit.
Giseine O — Google review
Came to the small town of Tanlay for the chateau. We brought our Bulldog with, so we just wen for the exteriour visit. Be aware of the opening times (it's closed for lunchtime) when you visit. The chateau was completed around in the middle of the 17th century. Even though construction have begun almost 100 years earlier. It's been in the hands of the same family since the 18th Century and is still owned by them. It's a really nice chateau. Maybe not the biggest you've seen, but definitely one of the prettiest. It's a real looker. With the moat surrounding it it's a picture-perfect castle. Make sure to go for a walk in the park/woods behind the castle. It's an easy, flat walk along the water. Dogs allowed here as well. A nice and relaxing spot with only few visitors. Staff here was very nice and friendly, very welcoming. And 3 Euros for the exteriour visit a real steal. It takes a lot of money and manpower to take care of this chateau and its surroundings. A very rewarding visit. Really enjoyed it. If you arrive by car you can park for free along the main road, just 1-2min away from the chateau.
Alex H — Google review
Origimally magnificent but now decrepit and unloved, with national treasures (books, tapestries et c) being destroyed by a "noble" family. Better given back to the people, where it stole most of its wealth from. The guide was lovely though.
Kristina T — Google review
Beautiful castle that is worth seeing. I don't speak French so I received a sketchy presentation in English. In my opinion, this presentation is very poor in information, information that is also missing inside the castle.
Dan V — Google review
Wonderful fairy tale Chateau moated in beauty, drenched in peace surrounded with epic beauty,. E.G. a 2km avenue of lime trees canals and meadows not to mention the architecture.
Tobias K — Google review
The chateau has a lot of period furnishings and decor that are often lacking in other historic sites. The place oozes history and intrigue. Check the website for current hours and tour times.

I am so pleased we went to see this beautiful garden and Château. 5€ each for entrance. Free car parking. The gardens were accessible for wheelchairs and prams . But not sure about the Château. The tranquility of the whole setting and the work to keep it looking splendid is outstanding. We took time to sit in the deck chairs provided in the shade of the old trees, to be in the moment. Water trickling through the stream and cascading from the fountain all helped too.
Lindsey B — Google review
What beutiful gardens the formal gardens are wonderful and the parkland offers a lovely shady walk when the sun was as hot as it was the day we visited. Dog friendly, they are only not allowed in the formal boxed hedged area they are allowed to walk around then. The house itself is really a performing arts area but the building itself is beutiful. The staff were very friendly and it was cheap to visit half at least the price of a simular garden in the UK. Small cafe on site as well I'm the summer July and August they have musical and performance arts in the gardens I understand. Good parking as well even for motorhomes Well worth a visit.
Christopher H — Google review
Very nice building, full of interesting architecture. The gardens are beautiful with a variety of planting schemes. Very peaceful walking round or sitting near the pond.
Stephen — Google review
We go there many times a year and the gardens are a joy to stroll and to enjoy the scenery of the castle. The amazing tree sculptures, the giant Sequoia, the pond, it's a pleasure to visit 😉. And afterwards a local beer or coffee, wine?
Martin W — Google review
Super nice garden and the building is awesome, especially the attic!
Martin W — Google review
The gardens are beautiful, as mentioned in others’ reviews. I am not sure the cost of €6,50 per adult to enter equates to the experience though. The chateau was empty with no art on the walls and unfurnished. We only had access to two rooms to look at and this didn’t add much to the experience. Disappointing as we have seen many other excellent historical places filled with art and explanation (like in Dijon who seem to provide much more for free for the tourist). To add insult to injury, we were expected to pay an extra euro to get the information guide in English.
Meg D — Google review
Lovely gardens and park, very well maintained. There are lawn chairs where you can have a short break. Really worth a visit, we were happy to be in the area and enjoy it.

Worthwhile visiting this place and walking in the footsteps of Renoir, especially in summer when he visited also. You get the feel of the simplicity of the village divided by the river, and to be inspired. Good to do the walking tour, just follow the red signs around the village, takes you to all the major parts. Enjoy!!!
Con S — Google review
They have made a great program for everyone to have a dynamic couple of hours walking the city of Essoyes and discovering the life of the man and artist. Renoir's House, Gardens, his studio, the cemetery where you can find his grave and that of his wife plus the cultural center where you can watch a short film in English/ French and see the cute exhibition. Very friendly people/youth greeting us as we passed by. All in all, an enjoyable and educational experience for adults and young people. I say just come to this city. You will end up with a bunch of beautiful pictures to remember the visit. Audio guides available. Credit cards accepted. English-speaking staff.
Daisy A — Google review
I love visiting this little museum in Essoyes, the foundation that manages the Renoir estate and studio do such a great job. The staff is particularly friendly, speak English (thankfully, still learning French) and they are really nice and helpful. We chose to take along the head-sets and I'm glad we did! The life and times of Renoir is fascinating how this artist saw real life and painted it. I'm so glad he did. One of my absolute favorite painters who also LIVED his life shows in the walking museum through the town. You will learn so much about his first love ART as well as his daily life in this "vacation" or resting spot for him to reflect. Every time I am in Champagne~Ardenne I include this on my itinerary because everyone enjoys it so much. This precious little town too, makes me want to rent an apartment and just walk the streets on a Saturday morning and step back in time.
Travel W — Google review
Terrific village to spend the afternoon with a picnic and a comfortable pair of shoes. The village is very quaint and photogenic. They have many bistros and bars to eat and drink. The Renoir exhibit is very informative and detailed. It is a walking tour that starts in the office of tourism and ends at his grave.

Mémorial Charles De Gaulle is located in the tranquil village of Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, known for being a place of repose for General de Gaulle. The estate of La Boisserie, his family home, is now open to the public and offers insight into the life of this renowned statesman. Visitors can explore various rooms including the drawing room, dining room, library, and office where de Gaulle wrote his memoirs.
The Mémorial Charles de Gaulle is a very good museum. It teaches you a lot about Charles de Gaulle and French history. The museum is modern and interesting. The place is beautiful and important. Sometimes it is busy and some signs are only in French, but most people enjoy the visit. If you like history, you will like this museum.

De Gaulle was a legend in his own mind. Horrible leader with a massive ego. Bad combination. He never could thank the English or Americans for the liberation of France. Just a small man all around.

Well that’s two hours of my life I won’t get back. I have never been to a museum that has such bad lighting and small writing. The amount of content you need to read is exhausting. We entered with a real interested in the life of Charles de Gaulle. We left, knowing not a great deal, more than when we entered,. We noticed many people got bored after the first hour and quickly rush through the museum. for English speaking people, you need to give yourself at least four hours.
Steve O — Google review
Fantastic museum. They have radio headphones in several languages that are poised to go off when you hit certain points in the museum. The museum is large and has an inside and outside section. My headphones didn't fuction properly which was a bummer. I'd even taken them back a couple of times and got them replaced. All the boards are multi-lingual so I had a good time. Very extensive collection. Would go back to see it again.

Boisserie, family home of General de Gaulle

Historic Sites
Boisserie, family home of General de Gaulle, is a fascinating and educational discovery located in the quiet Aube region. Despite being a simple dwelling for such a prominent figure, it offers an intimate glimpse into a significant period of France's history. The house provides insight into the life of Charles de Gaulle and is beautifully furnished with midcentury French country details.
A gem, an insight into the life of Charles de Gaulle. One does not have many opportunities to visit the house of a French President.

Château d'Ancy-le-Franc

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lavish 16th-century palace with gilded, mural-filled apartments overlooking ornamental gardens.
This chateau is always a hit with visiting guests from out of country. Numerous rooms have been restored and contribute to the beauty of the chateau and its storied past. The gardens provide an enjoyable walk, whether you stay close to the chateau or wander out to the folly. The staff are friendly and helpful. The chateau can accommodate group tours in English; otherwise there is a written guide to help you along as you tour.

Nice example of a french chateau. Decent guides offered (paper or audio - in french and English). Dressing up clothes for the kids were pretty fun, and they got to wear them all around the chateau inside. Well worth the visit. Grounds outside were also nice, though worth knowing that they don't allow picnics in the grounds.
Christopher L — Google review
This is a privately owned Chateau that has been for 100's of years. The latest owners with the help of the Local Government have restored alot but they desperately need a new roof. You can see in some of the rooms that water is coming through and affecting the rooms beneath. Such a shame. You can only visit the first floor. The rooms are very intricate and pretty with some seriously pretty floors. Parquet and tiled which are in very good condition at the moment. We managed to capture a QR code at the entrance which allowed us to listen to an audio guide which was excellent and allowed us to appreciate the history. Really enjoyable and we spent 2 hours inside and the time flew by.

Jeane S — Google review
The main attraction in this museum is a beautiful large bronze vase, which was a burial gift for the so-called Lady of Vix . The lady must have been a princess of one of the Celtic tribes that lived in this area at the end of the first Iron Age, around 500 BCE. The other galleries have collections about the Gallo Roman times until present day and near the entrance is a section on natural history. There was a wall full of woodprint blocks, which was interesting.
Seimen B — Google review
An amazing place. Superb.
Conal H — Google review
Very helpful and kind staff. I went to the museum specifically for the lady of vix burial goods. A little disappointed by the exhibit, it’s clear that the exhibit is still a work in progress. There was very little informative texts, especially at the start of the exhibit. The museum also displays the remains of the lady. The issue of displaying human remains is contentious at best, but even if it wasn’t I dont feel that the museum did it appropriately. The fact that the museum shows a reconstruction of her burial chamber just in front of the case containing her remains really emphasise the disrespect it is to have her lying on the floor, in the dirt.

Very interesting place to visit if you are in the region. Full of history. You will need 1 1/2 hours to visit.
Luciele M — Google review
Mildly interesting. The main problem is hidden. The tickets used to pay for the restoration, which was mostly done by volonteers. When it was almost finished, the owner decided to get the management back in order to collect the reward .. (Edit) the answer of the owner does not address the fact that they let the city managed the place until it became profitable, then the owner took back the management...

Great place to visit if your passing by Buffon, Montbard, the forge of Montbard is a historical place where thry used to produce iron so you get to see many places like the dorms of the workers and their families and the working place with its equipements as well as many halks of seevices and other uses and the buildings are integrated with nature with the artifical canal of the river that was made to pass water for hydrolic machines uses and there is courtyards around it with gardens on the other side, very beautiful

Stopped here today (26/9/23)and the public walkways are still closed. It is an amazing structure and well worth stopping to see and photograph. There is no work going on - there doesn’t appear to be anything structural needed as trains are still crossing. It just needs to have the cleaning finished; most of it is done but some of the stonework is still black. Please finish the work and reopen the walkways for us to be able to really enjoy this incredible viaduct in full.

Sources of the Seine

Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
The Seine river is one of the longest waterways in France. It is famous for passing through Paris. About 50km from Dijon are its sources. A bit off the beaten path. The park and the statue at the source are a calm retreat on the countryside. It is worth a stop when travelling by car between Troyes and Dijon.
Philipp S — Google review
Peaceful garden with the Source of the river Seine. It's a cave with a nice sculpture from which the water flows in a small wet area. Many people will have seen the Seine when it passes Paris, but here you can see the first trickle of it. There is a rest area with some benches and some GR walking routes pass the place The entrance is free

Château de Châteauneuf

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Arrived on a Saturday to find entrance free, otherwise still a bargain at 6 Euros. Has had recent sympathetic restoration with well presented information in several languages. Most of the chateau is open to visitors. The views exceptional and the surrounding village very pretty. Streets are narrow so not suitable for larger vehicles. Parking is free and there are a few nice looking restaurants/ cafes to eat.
Richard V — Google review
A painfully over-restored castle. The newly restored right tower is not a sight to behold. Inside, however, many interesting details are still visible. Also of interest is the building's vertical open section, which reveals the medieval structure.
Michael K — Google review
I loved this castle! It is well-restored and has an interesting history. It's wild to imagine walking on floor tiles that have been in use for maybe 900 years! There is just enough decor and information to give you a sense of the castle over the centuries... It feels a bit like a treasure hunt, following along with the story of the former inhabitants and the renovation process. Don't miss the lower level with the story of the renovations. The video at the end almost made me cry. Keep an eye on time because they do kick you out for their lunch break! The medieval garden was so well-tended, we loved all the happy herb plants with their corresponding labels. I also loved the colorful tiles in the bathroom. It's amazing how the visitors center was designed so as to be essentially invisible when approaching the castle. We also really enjoyed the saunter through the town to get to the castle. What a charming place! It's a great value for the price of admission... We paid 6 Euros and we were there for almost two hours. Would have stayed longer!
Sarah B — Google review
Fantastic castle with great audio visuals in 4 languages. Excellent exhibition detailing the recent renovation and lovely walled gardens. Perfect mornings entertainment for the family. Tremendous views of the surrounding countryside.
Netty S — Google review
This is a very well maintained beautiful small château that has an audio self guided tour as well as regular tours (check with chateauneuf team for hours and languages). The small village where the château is located is a very quaint village with beautiful stone houses and quite a variety of small restaurants where you can havevlunch, dinner or just an apéritif or a coffee break. Checked some of the menus andcthe prices were quite reasonable . . Definitely recommended !
Thanos O — Google review
It is not expensive to visit, which is fair as a lot of the castle is not available to see. There are a lot of videos to watch about the renovation work which are quite interesting. There were a couple of primary school classes visiting when we went, so it was often difficult to see anything. It's not somewhere I would take the smaller grandchildren as it's quite bland and a lot of reading to do to understand it. Parking in the very pretty village and toilets near the gift shop.
Karen P — Google review
Went with the family during our holiday. Kids (4 & 7yrs) loved it. Free entrance for kids, adults was not so expensive. (6eur p.p) (The souvenir shop itself was quite expensive) Keep in mind that between 12.30-14.00 visiting is closed. We spended ~1 hr in the château and also ~1hr in the village. Lots of art to be found, some restaurants but no grocery shopping.
Jeroen A — Google review
Lovely place for a walk and some ice cream. If you have the time, take the full tour of the fortress. If not, enjoy the majestic renovations and the view. Carefully: avoid walking under the oaks- the caterpillars are toxic.

Grottes de Bèze

Tours
Sightseeing Tours
I have never seen water so crystal clear. A great deal of effort is being made to preserve this environment. The underground temperature is kept at 12 degrees Celsius year-round. There are no fish. This is an adventure that can only be experienced during this season. During the winter, the water level rises and it becomes impossible to enter the cave.
Ayumi — Google review
Visited at the end of April. The town itself is well worth your time. Meandering local streets filled with centuries old buildings by the river and a walk up to the grotto takes you back to other times. The grotto was an interesting side visit especially since you get in a boat to meander up and down the cave section that has an interesting history both timeless and fascinating. Very quiet tourist wise that time of year so no battle for parking or queues to get in. Kids will love the boat ride in the “dark".

A nice view of the cave with a great story written around the cave. Very entertaining, cool to sit in a boat in a cave without an engine. Once it falls silent its quite eerie. Didn't know what to expect going in, but exceeded any expectation I had. The town outside and the source of the river are also very picturesque and worth a visit. Sadly not really a place to get a nice lunch when we visited.

Nestled on the exterior of the stunning Eglise Notre-Dame in Dijon, the Owl of Dijon (La Chouette de Dijon) is a charming stone sculpture that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This small yet significant owl is not just an artistic feature; it’s believed to grant wishes when gently stroked, making it a must-visit for those seeking a bit of magic during their travels.
Cute little owl on the side of the cathedral. So many ppl touched it... you can't really see the owl anymore. Follow the golden plaque arrows around the city to find it

A modern old town, just follow the golden arrows for sightseeing. The shops are neat and orderly. I saw people slipping after the rain because the floor is slippery. It is recommended to wear shoes a good shoes. There is a restaurant that supports Down syndrome. I recommend you try it.
Jiraporn C — Google review
Palm-sized and polished by countless hands, the little owl carved into Notre-Dame’s wall turns a side lane into a ritual. Touch with your left hand and make a wish; the brass pavement plate with the owl logo marks the stop and small arrows carry you along Dijon’s Parcours de la Chouette. This is the route’s namesake and most photographed moment: modest stone, big civic idea. I like how the trail knits small details to major landmarks - marker, brief engagement, onward wayfinding - so one carving speaks to grander sites across the old town.
Loo Y — Google review

Beautiful museum! Spacious with beautiful displays of paintings, sculptures, and archeological artifacts, located in the historical section of Dijon. The rooms are beautiful. Lots of classic old works, a few modern works, so not very impressive for me. Admission is free, so it's worth seeing the architecture. Beware, there's a trap on the first floor, you'll never get out without asking... we weren't the only ones. Fortunately, the lovely security staff are there to help.

A free art museum! It was a treat, of course. I'm not an expert, but I think their collection was very good, based mostly on the Duc's collection. Don't miss the Duc and Duchess's tombs! Everything was in french and it wasn't very crowded, even on a Saturday and even with people fleeing from the rain, like we were.
Erika H — Google review
The Best Things in Life Are Free Well, that’s certainly true for the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. I first discovered it a few years ago while tracking works by Vieira da Silva and Nicolas de Staël—and since then, it has become an almost obligatory stop on the way to or back from the South. Just three hours from Luxembourg, and each visit brings something new. This time, a megalomaniac Chinese painter exhibited right in front of the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy—a juxtaposition as unexpected as it is striking. And if you’re traveling with children, don’t miss the fantastical animals of Pompon. A place where history, discovery, and wonder are all free of charge.

Chateau de Savigny-les-Beaune, a historic castle dating back to 1340, is now home to an impressive array of museums dedicated to various types of vehicles. Visitors can explore collections of warplanes, vintage fire trucks, antique motorbikes, Abarth racing cars, model aircraft, and high-clearance tractors. The chateau's park features an authentic squadron of fighter planes and Abarth racing cars.
Wow, wow and a double wow. This place is an absolute goldmine. I could spend hours here! The collection is absolutely incredible! For motorcycle/car/airplane enthusiasts, you NEED to stop here. The entrance ticket was very reasonable (I think you can charge more though, honestly and it would still be worth every penny).
Rob R — Google review
What a remarkable collection of machines. I particularly liked the Abarth car collection. The motorcycles were numerous most makes I’d never heard of. All of them are for sale if you have a barn big enough to accommodate them. There are agricultural machines, fire fighting vehicles and most impressive the aircraft. Not restored but left to weather and decay. So many that you can view close up.
Alan H — Google review
Well, they do offer free parking on-site, so that's a plus. The place seems a bit neglected and dirty, but don't let that stop you from visiting. As I'm a USAF retired fighter aircraft mechanic, I visited just to see the aircraft. Sadly, you're not allowed to actually walk around them. You're only allowed to walk in front of them on a gravel pathway. Still worth a visit. The motorcycle museum was over the top impressive. Clearly this is their main focus. There is nothing special about going inside other than to see the motorcycle collection. On our vacation, we used this stop as a time filler along the driving route to Paris. About an hour away from Paris.

This expansive wine house, established in a 16th-century convent and operating since 1780, invites visitors to embark on self-guided tours through its labyrinthine underground caves. Here, you can explore an impressive collection of Burgundy's finest wines at your own pace.
This was hands down the absolute best vin degustation we have ever attended. Strongly recommend the privilege tour, but I truly believe that our guide, Murielle, was what made this experience exceptional. The tour of Les Caves was incredible. The wine was incredible as well. Add this to your list of “must do” wine tours while in Burgundy!

Self guided tour and tasting for 25 euros. Fantastic cellars, well laid out with informative video stations. For the tasting of 6 wines at the end Leane was professional and knowledgeable. We bought quite a few wines so maybe think about giving part of the initial fee back?
Beverly D — Google review
I regret our decision to visit this winery. While the cellars are interesting given their length, they are not worth seeing for the price. There is no proper greeting or personal guide, a small amount of audio/video in a few spots, no explanation or opportunity to ask questions. A big sales pitch at the end to purchase their expensive wines. Not at all worth the price.
Andrea G — Google review
We did the self-guided tour. It was very informative and the cellar was impressive. We also had a tasting at the end of 3 white and 3 red wines. We would definitely recommend this tour.

Malika was one of the best wine tasting ambassadors we have ever had. We were in the regular tour and she recognized that we were interested in 1er Crus. 15 bottles of tasting later we placed our order for 24 bottles of outstanding bottles. What a great experience! We will visit her every time we are in Beaune!
John D — Google review
We did not enjoy this tour. It was raining, and they didn't even open the doors to let people in. There is little information on a self-tour, and the wine was the smallest amount I have seen in a tasting! It's all about trying to sell their wine. The cellars are large, but not to the standard of other tours.
Martyn L — Google review
This was a very nice chateau. The self guided tour was actually very pleasant. I love old cellars and seeing dusty bottles of goodness is really cool. The self paced tasting was pretty incredible. There were attendants if you had questions, but they let you "taste" as much as you wanted. A little dangerous for Americans but we kept it classy...mostly. We did talk to a sommelier about wine and ended up doing a private tasting with some very cool Irish folks. The wines were waaaaaayyyy out of our price league, but it was an awesome experience. We did buy a pricey bottle for our 1 year old to open on her 21st. She better enjoy it! Overall this place is classy, nice, ancient, and not too stuffy. Highly recommend it for the value.

We had an absolutely perfect time here. The tour is very interesting as the cellars are just enormous. The highlight, for us, was the tasting at the end. We had an almost hour long conversation, tasted some great wine, explored all their options, and couldn't have asked for more. Worth a visit.

The Hôtel-Dieu Museum, also known as the Hospices de Beaune, is a remarkable medieval hospice turned museum that showcases local art and furnishings from the Middle Ages. Built in the 15th century to aid the poor and sick, this historic monument features stunning varnished tile roofs and serves as a museum of medical history.
The free audio guide really brought all of the amazing history of the Hotel - Dieu to life. Architecturally stunning and historically impressive. We loved every minute of our visit. (The audio guide also has a children's option so don't hesitate to ask!) We reserved our spot easily online and walked right in.

Really loved the audio guide that gave great information but was entertaining the way it is done. Took us about an hour and a half to go through and a great picture of the non wine history in Beaune. Especially liked the pharmacie room and the presentation of every day life in those times.

This was definitely the highlight of our visit in Beaune. The building used to be a hospital for poor people and is now very well restored. Entrance fee is Euro 12 - you can book online or pay at the spot. The roof and the building itself are very beautiful but they cannot be seen from outside. You need to purchase a ticket. I am glad we did.

Truly beautiful: the roof, courtyard, musuem displays, the numerous works of art. Very well curated, easy to understand the history and acts of charity carried out here. The Last Judgement altarpiece is a true masterpiece and is not to be missed, very powerful Practically had the place to ourselves after 6

Great place to learn about how medicine was practices since the 15th century. Well restored and well presented. Their audio guide is an excellent teaching and learning tool, especially the “if you would like to learn more” green button.

Step back in time of old style hospital. Magnificent building with a tiled roof you can see best from inside the large courtyard. Well worth the entry fee. Booklet or headphones self audio tour are included with ticket price.

Working for a Hospice charity, I enjoyed seeing the granddad of Hospices in Beaune. This town was caring for the vulnerable from before my country was even discovered. Amazing tour and worth the ticket price to enter.
James J — Google review
A must have seen in Beaune. Yes the roof is great. But for me the history of the very old hospital and its foundation fascinates me more. You get an audioguide, which I highly recommand. The tour is about 1 to 1,5 hours. A lot old hospital furnitures and equipment. Entrance was 12€, which is ok for such an historic place!

Boutique Wine Market

Mentioned on

Wine store
Boutique Wine Market is a shop that specializes in French wines and offers tastings as well as cellar tours. Located in the basement of an ancient church, this wood-beamed store provides visitors with the opportunity to try and purchase local wines. It is a great place to pick up all your favorite wines from wineries and vineyards you have visited.
Excellent place to have a wine tasting, where you can also taste top wines. We were helped by M. Laurent Corneillat whom has an excellent knowledge of wines and the area. Top service.

We had a wonderful experience with their guided tasting tour. My husband and I paid for the tasting, while our son accompanied us without participating, as he’s not into wine. The group size was limited to 10 people, but it ended up being just the three of us. Our guide spoke excellent English and shared his deep local wine expertise throughout the tour. We tasted four red wines, including a Grand Cru valued at around USD 295 per bottle (based on my later research), and three white wines featuring two premium crus. We were very impressed with the wine selection and overall tasting experience. The next day, when we dined at a local Michelin-starred restaurant, the sommelier recommended a red from the same winery as the first red we tasted (Marsannay 2021, approximately USD 64 per bottle market value or $85 in a Lyon restaurant ) to pair with our meal, which included both fish and chicken. Pinot Noir from Burgundy is well-structured and far more sophisticated than many Napa counterparts, which I find somewhat overpriced. The flavor profiles vary greatly depending on the winery and vintage. The Chardonnay also stood out, especially when served at the proper temperature. We particularly enjoyed the Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Champlots 2022 Blanc from Domaine Gilles Bouton et Fils (Vivino rating 4.0). Its floral and fruity notes of peach, apricot, and lemon, combined with a buttery hint and balanced acidity, made it exceptionally refreshing on an early summer day. We purchased a bottle and savored it back at our hotel. The wine glasses we used during tasting became a store souvenir. It’s a pity that both red and white Burgundy wines are quite delicate and don’t travel well in summer heat. Nevertheless, this historical church-turned-boutique wine market is a true gem. I highly recommend this guided tasting experience, especially for visitors from outside Europe. Good value with pleasant surprises.

Our group of 4 did a private wine tasting with Andréa and it was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable and took his time in taking us through each wine and helping us to appreciate their special qualities. Would highly recommend this experience.

Absolutely loved our experience at Boutique Wine Market! The self-paced wine tasting through the cellar was fantastic for our small group of 3. Tasting 8 wines, including 3 premier cru, was a highlight, and the massive maps added depth to the experience. In just one hour, we learned so much and enjoyed every moment. A big shoutout to the team for their incredible wine knowledge and hospitality. Highly recommend this gem for any wine enthusiast!
Sue C — Google review
We took a 7 glasses wine tour in the store which has a great ambiance. The only downside of the tour was the wine itself. Even the more expensive and possibly better wines were not to the liking of a group of 6 persons. The fact that it was unanimously off was odd. Especially considering the price.
Ewoud H — Google review
Our small group of 4 really enjoyed this wine tasting experience to go at your own pace through the cellar. We tasted 8 wines that included 3 premier cru and learned a lot from this experience and massive maps- overall a great 1 hour wine tasting for our small group! Big thanks to Amelia for sharing her incredible wine knowledge with us too.

I have been in Beaune a few times and Marche aux Vins is a fantastic place to purchase wine to be delivered to the US. Having used their expertise and purchasing some fantastic Puligny Montrachet white wines I love Bourgonone wines and this wine merchant has them all.

Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux

Mentioned on

Abbey
Sights & Landmarks
Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux is a historic monastery with modern additions, including a cheese-making operation that produces the renowned Citeaux cheese. Visiting the abbey offers an immersive experience in both religious and French historical significance, with knowledgeable guides providing interactive tours. The hospice provides a perfect setting to accompany monastic life, offering new facilities and delicious food at reasonable prices.
I read a few poor reviews for the abbey. What is apparent to me is that these individuals did not do their homework in advance. The tours are conducted entirely in French, but complete translations are provided in an easy to follow binder. Advanced reservations are highly recommended as the tour size is limited and only offered at 10, 2, and 4. This is an active monastery of Trappist monks and as such there is no “behind the curtain” tour of their life and activities. It is true that only a few of the original buildings survive due to the chaotic history of wars and revolutions. However, the tour does an excellent job of presenting the history of the Cistercians and the monastery. If you are interested in the history of monasticism, then a visit to Citeaux is worth it. Otherwise, don’t waste your time and save your poor reviews for yourself.

Unfortunately when I was there they had only guided tours. And I was just to late for the 11:30 tour. So I had to console myself having a look at the small free exhibition in the entrance

Lovely and quiet. Great place to break off from the Burgundy food and drink party.
JDE J — Google review
An hour and a half of dry historic lecture. You see in 3 buildings where they have reconstructed scenes badly. There is really nothing original left there. I thought we at least would get to see the cheese being made but no. Sold in shop but no tasters. Do not take kids they would be so bored. Could have read all they said in a history book.
Philippa B — Google review
what a disappointment! we would NOT recommend it (abbaye de Fontenay yes!) - no original buildings on site, not one. - you visit 4 rooms, that's it (and not even originl buildings, sorry to insist) - no garden to visit, there is just a plain field next to it - visit only with a guide, which means you either have to book in advance or check the times - you dont get to see the cheese factory either - and if you were hoping for a bit of cheese tasting at the shop.... well you're not at the right place.

Difficult to get in, check carefully the conditions. Inside only with the guide, few times a day. Yes, it was during a weekday after the main season, but during about 40 minutes around we could see dozens of people coming and going away with disappointment.

Collégiale Notre-Dame de Dole

Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Collegiale Notre-Dame de Dole is a stunning cathedral located in the heart of the city. This grand church, constructed between 1509 and 1574, replaced an earlier church that was destroyed in 1479. The building symbolizes the renewal of the city after its destruction. While it may benefit from some restoration work and English translations, it offers a lovely experience for those who appreciate historical churches and seek solace.
The collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Dole in the Jura was built in the 16th century. It then replaced an earlier church that was destroyed in 1479 when the city was razed to the ground by the troops of the King of France Louis XI, when he intended to take Franche-Comté after the disappearance of Charles the Bold, last sovereign duke of Burgundy.… Reconstruction works began in 1509, the new building was intended to somehow symbolize the renewal of the city.

Yes, beautiful. But yet another disgraceful monument to the greed and avarice of the Catholic church. Where's the charity? Where's the love? People dying and starving with poverty all over the world, but money flying around the Vatican. Disgusting. They make me sick.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
(Translated by Google) My visit to Dôle made me discover this original, well-hidden fountain, which emerges after a tunnel, along the Tanneurs canal. To see it, you have to go down the few steps of Passage Raynaud III. It is part of the *Chat perché' pedestrian route allowing you to discover the city where *Marcel Aymé lived. It is located on the site of an old source from the 13th century, then located under an old city gate, as indicated by the plaque affixed to the entrance to the passage. Closed for a long time after collapsing, it became this fountain, completely restored in 1986, as we can admire it today. Built-up pontoons allow you to walk along it and come out on the other side, along the canal.

(Translated by Google) Absolutely make the detour. The entrance from rue Pasteur is approximately 10m in the opposite direction to Maison Pasteur or possible access from the canal. Follow the cat on the ground that leads there: this buried architectural feat will leave you speechless! Muddy in September, wooden rafters allow easy access around the fountain. We deplore the few scattered pieces of waste. (Original) Faire absolument le détour. (Translated by Google) The current washhouse dates back to the 19th century, having undergone several modifications between 1789 and 1864. Abandoned following the collapse of the vault, the site was sealed in 1953 by a concrete slab, before being restored and reopened to the public in 1986. The passageway today constitutes a picturesque shortcut linking the city center to the Little Venice of Dole. A curiosity not to be missed!
