The Cava Museo Fantiscritti is an open-air museum located in Carrara's renowned marble quarries. It showcases a collection of excavating tools and sculptures from the local history, with guided tours available for visitors at an additional cost. The cave itself is incredibly large and offers a one-hour trip, with the option to bring your car for an adventurous drive through the long tunnel. An incredible place and well worth the visit.

These mountains are impressive. The amount of marble here is huge. The tour guide was pretty good and made a great presentation The tour itself is very limited and the jeeps are a bit uncomfortable for those riding in the back.
Rhadames T — Google review
This place is amazing. The fact they have been mining here since before the Roman Era is min blowing. The whole process of mining, old and new, is just amazing. A real must see.
Jedaiah H — Google review
Very nice tour through the marble cave! The little busride into the cave is quite cool. There is plenty to see and learn. Our tourguide was really funny and did know quite much. Even for the children - which do not speak English or Italian - it was great fun! Sidenote is to keep eye on the tourguide at the end of the tour. We still needed to pay our visit at the end. As I was doing just that the buss and tourguide where already gone and we were a little puzzled how to get out. 😉
Melanie A — Google review
With the taxi from carrara-avenza station to here, 50Euro one-way (may vary). There are 2 different kind of tours ; one tour inside the cave, the other one go onto the mountain. You have to book and pay separately.
Neni K — Google review
Thursday/October When We arrived A woman (i think her name was Katharina?) drove out of the cave. We approached her and asked for the next jeeptour, but the last tour left 5 minutes before and she was about to go home. But then she did a whole tour just for us 2! So kind! It was so impressive to be inside of a mountain in a cave of that size! She even drove us through the mountain-Tunnel to the other side to the office, so we could pay by card, as we did not have enough cash at hand! So bring cash! The quarry itself is very beautiful and you can still see men working hard inside (until 15:00 every day). They will explain the machinery as well. You get to wear a helmet(cool!), get the chance for some souvenirs and they take some pictures (free!) of you. We were very impressed by the industry and the machinery and the size of everything, it’s massive! It’s a combination of a working place and a tourist attraction. Marble is just a beautiful material. Very happy we got the chance to visit this! 15€/p.P

This museum was a perfect way to explain the history of marble mining to our daughter. The owners are passionate about the museum and it was created by their grandfather to honor all the ancestors who dedicated their lives to this work. The small museum shop was great for souvenirs. The owner even gave our daughter a piece of marble!
Mia's M — Google review
Super experience. We had a very good English speaking guide. She explained everything very well. Also nice to drive into the cave with your own car (instead of their busses, it changed cause of corona, but to my opinion it has to stay like that! It's pretty cool). Impressive to see how marble is cut and where all that marble in the world is coming from for ages already).

It is part of the Porto Venere Natural Park and attracts visitors from all over the world. Beautiful island just in front of Portovenere! It's so easy to reach using a ferry from Portovenere pier which costs 2.50€ each way! On the island there's a few restaurants/refreshment and it's perfect for a beach day or for a hike day (if I'm not wrong you can do the whole island in 2 hours). There are beautiful landscapes and breathtaking view points! On top of that, you can also spot wild goats all around the island ;) highly recommended! A great and quieter alternative to Cinque Terre!
Vins P — Google review
Unfortunately didn't get enough time to complete the walk around the island. Being October the ferry times were not as often as it would have been in the summer or spring. Definitely will come back.

I like this island very much. The ferry boat takes people to Terrizzo but the rest of the island is not crowded. Palmaria is quiet and it has got fantastic views on Portovenere and the surrounding sea. The trekking around the island is nice and relaxing. There are goats walking free on the paths..they have horns but don't be scared, they are nice!

One of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. I came here with a friend, without knowing what to expect. We climbed the hill behind the castle, and at one point, surprise: there's a freaking church in the middle of the sea! What a view...what a moment! I wish I could go back to that hill, it was so quiet and calm... unlike the other 5 terre

What a beautiful parc. It’s absolutely worth visit it. The best way to visit it is by boat. The islands are super nice. Some very special history. There are companies where you can rent a boat to see the beautiful spots. I advice to take a local guide. They know the rich history of this area.

Beautiful area!! If you have time, I’d highly recommend hiking from Riomaggiore to Portovenere. It was one of the most beautiful and interesting hikes in the area! Hiking down into Portovenere afforded you TONS of spectacular sceneries. There was also a cute cafe along the trail (before you hike down to Campiglia) where you could get coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and various sweets. We went in early October and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. You can’t miss this area! If you get into Portovenere early enough, you can catch the ferry back! If you end up missing it, you can simply take the bus to La Spezia and catch the train back.

Castello del Piagnaro, named after the slate used in its construction, stands as a strategic stronghold guarding the city and communication routes. What a gem!! The castle is well kept and fun to explore. The exhibit/museum with the statutes is fantastic! We walked up and took the elevator down. Both easy options. The staff was nice and even had free audio in English. Very well put together and we were very pleased!
IMtrigirl — Google review
We decided to walk around the town and we ended up at a tunnel that ran under the castle and brought you to an elevator. That brought us to the castle and we walked around the outside. Very beautiful and very well kept area. It was $7 each but we were a bit early since it didn't open until ten so we just walked around the castle and slowly back towards town. There were many little hidden gems of streets and small bridges. It was a really nice walk and finished it off with stopping in the square for a cappuccino and gelato.
Matt H — Google review
The castle hosts a very interesting museum on megalithic sculptures of the ancient inhabitants of the Lungian region: definetly worth a visit!

It is a genuine experience of a medieval castle with videos explaining the stele statues. With wonderful views across the town and the surrounding countryside. There is a lift at the end of via Garibaldi by Porta Parma for anyone who cannot face the challenge of the walk.
Philip M — Google review
Don't listen to the person that wrote not to take the lift. The lift is free. Entrance to the castle is €2 and if you want to also visit the museum, then it's €8 total. Well worth a visit. The view is fab. Come during Medievalis... it's great fun.
Heidi L — Google review
Great location. The castle was restored, it's scenic but sadly empty. It hosts a display of menhir statues found in the Lunigiana area and dating back to the Bronze age/iron age 5000 years ago - fascinating monuments that guarded crossroads or river crossings. The menhirs are beautiful and the display inside the museum is scenic with great lighting. By entering the museum you will also get to go on the castle's ramparts, beautiful view over Pontremoli. Pity most of the so-called multimedia material are videos in Italian. Foreign visitors should ask for a discount IMHO
Laura P — Google review

I loved visiting the castle while touring Pontremoli! Our tour guide Marco was so knowledgeable and pleasant, in fact he told us there was also the possibility to sleep there and a week later we came back and stayed the night!!!! One of the best and exciting experiences ever!!!! The rooms were clean and so were the shared bathrooms! We had the keys to the castle since they lock it at 7:30!! It is illuminated so beautifully at night and you are able to explore it all!! This experience is suitable for all ages and we were even allowed to bring our dog! Some rooms fit up to 20 people

The museum provides an elegant and evocative setting for these one-dimensional sculptures, which are considered important artifacts from the region's ancient past.
a beautiful museum that really details the origins of the Statue Stele culture. I was impressed by the castle and the way they used the medieval environment to add poetry and depth to the exhibition. Definitely worth visiting if you are interested in prehistorical items and in copper or iron-age cultures.

Castle of Bardi

Museums
Centuries-old, hilltop castle with history & archaeological displays, guided tours & valley views.
A beautifully preserved fortress perched high above the valley. From the Piazza, in front of the church in Bardi, one takes a walk down the quaint main street towards the castle. Once down the magnificent structure towers above. Keeping to the left, climb up, through the gates and onto the courtyard area. It affords wonderful views and also has exhibits of artefacts through the centuries. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful weel kept Castle. From renovations. to 1800 renovations. Very interesting to see all the indise rooms, kitchen, cold storage, torture room. Eat downtown some very good restaurants.

Impressive medieval castle on a hilltop over a village. It's BIG and just after the holiday season it was almost deserted. We spent an hour or two roaming the ramparts, the many rooms (including a fascinating exhibition of 29th century socialist paintings) - and yes, the torture dungeon as well. We were pleasantly surprised to be left to roam the place on our own accord. The view of the valley from the ramparts is stunning.

Very interesting place with great views on the surroundings of Bardi. They definitely put a lot of interesting things to see inside those historic walls. When we were there a very interesting art exposition took place at the castle, worth to check out the rich programme throughout the year.

We were told that the castle wasn't much to look at. Being our first castle, it was fantastic. The view is incredible. There is a torture chamber. You can almost feel the people being tortured. Great experience. I can't imagine what castles the person who told us this was just ok has visited. This one was well worth the trip.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro is a significant holy site constructed amidst verdant surroundings during the mid-1500s. It can be accessed through an old mule trail or a cable car ride, and it boasts stunning vistas of the mountains and seaside landscapes. This unique church is an excellent destination for peaceful prayer and offers breathtaking views both inside and outside its walls. Its striking beauty makes it a must-visit location for anyone seeking to connect with their spirituality in a serene atmosphere.
A nice ascent to the sanctuary with the funicular, then an awesome walk in nature. Take time and bring a bottle of water!

Sitting high up on the hill in Montallegro, this is the first thing you see when you arrive via the Cable Car. It's just a short 10 min stroll to the church which is very pretty on the outside and highly decorated on the inside. A little more modern than other churches we have witnessed in surrounding towns and there are many tributes and photographs of loved ones who have past. They also have a gift shop if you feel the need to make a purchase.
Samantha P — Google review
We took the Tram up the the church, nice views. Its very peaceful amd you could contunue hiking around the back. There is also a restaurant behind the church. Inside the church locals were lighting candles and the ceilings were painted with bible stories. It seems this church serves as a sort of place of remembrance for deceased members, as silver hearts are hung everywhere. A small room in the back contains a miniature of the Church.

Ponte Gobbo, also known as the Hunchbacked Bridge, is a landmark bridge with a rich history dating back to Roman times. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it features an irregular up and down path and is characterized by its humpback structure supported by eleven stone arches of different height and width. This iconic bridge is a symbol of Bobbio town and is closely linked to the legend of Saint Columbanus and the Devil.
Not only have I been staying in Italy’s most beautiful village (2019). Bobbio is located in the heart of Val Trebbia, a valley described by Ernest Hemingway as "the most beautiful in the world". I discovered last night: “Historians have speculated that Bobbio was the town in which Leonardo da Vinci completed the Mona Lisa. Carla Glori in December 2011 has published her book Enigma Leonardo:decifrazioni e scoperte where the background of the portrait has been identified as the landscape of Bobbio.
Rob S — Google review
Really cool historic bridge with a stunning view. We parked outside the town, just next to the bridge. There's nothing much around, but it was worth the hour drive for us.
Miak O — Google review
Beautiful place, in fact the village has been awarded as the most beautiful village in Italy couple of years back. I fully agree with that! Since we went on Xmas day, there were literally nobody around. The drive through the hill (last 10-15mins of drive) is bit difficult since the width of the road is just enough for one vehicle. But with almost no traffic, seems to be ok. I love to visit the tourist places when it is empty, and I am glad I picked the Xmas day for the visit. There is a restaurant near this bridge, but was closed. The village also was very quite. Just my kind of place!

Beautiful, quiet place of worship. Be sure to learn about the history, pet the kittens, and visit the shop. I visit here annually bc it revives me spiritually.

Beautiful place! Quiet, very well restored. Enchanting landscape.

Beautiful hermitage, surrounded by chestnut trees and with a large oak tree in front. The paintings are true medieval frescos, and there are reliquaries of saints. Heartwarming the history of the blind brother Ave Maria.
Stefano B — Google review
Beautiful views inside and outside
Karsten R — Google review
Best place to pray, to make retreat and to buy the hand made religious articles of Fraiers of Don Orione. The tomb of venerable Frate Ave Maria adds more to the religious experience.
Anthony C — Google review
Very authentic and moving. Loved the smell of conifers on the patio. Good place to rest and let the thoughts wander.
Interview L — Google review
Lovely to be able to work around freely and see the church. The grounds are beautiful too.

Peaceful, delightful and calm. The perfect place to meet the Infinite, just what an Hermitage should be

Beautiful museum and with the exhibition of Georgio griffa. Colorful and fun. Perfect for children!!
Elysabeth C — Google review
I'm sure this place is beautiful as a venue, but as a standalone museum, it is not worth the $15 entrance fee per person. You walk up one set of stairs and are shown a tiny gallery where they have traveling exhibitions. The exhibition at the time we were there was that of some "famous" child painter who just put random brushstrokes on the canvas and some proud mom declared it "art." The bulk of the palace is unable to be visited. Only the primary ball room which is absolutely gorgeous and massive. I bet all the 5 star reviews are of people listening to concerts in that hall. Absolutely stunning. However, while viewing, you can spend maybe 5-10 minutes in there before you move on to the Doge's Chapel... which is also gorgeous, but small and worth another 5-10 minutes of time. All in all, we were out of there in less than 30 minutes and while we love the rooms we saw... we just expected more like the Royal Palaces in Genova and Torino.

Visited the World Press Photo exhibit here today and was blown away by the high quality of the images and the way they are presented.
Adam R — Google review
Easy to enter and just look around. Good spot to escape the heat as it's very cool within the structure.
Coral C — Google review
It doesn’t worth the money at all. No exhibistions other than the chapel, and even though there was supposed to be an exhibistion it was closed too. There’s literally nothing here. It doesn’t worth the 8 euros. And it should be included in the genova card.
Ágnes N — Google review
Not much to see as a museum. Really an event space.
Joe M — Google review
I didn’t see much because my visit was pretty short but there’s was this really cool big room that I don’t know how would you call it. It was impressive.

(Translated by Google) Perfect evening, incredibly clean, dark, cloudless sky! We began with an introduction of the summer constellations, and distances of the stars as orientation Arcturus / Vega / Deneb. The second part in the recently created planetarium with an introduction to the solar system and astronomical distances. The third part: observation through telescopes (Dobsonian) of M13, the famous globular cluster in the constellation of Hercules, M57, an unmissable planetary nebula in Lyra and Saturn just risen to the east. I brought a small astronomical binocular with me to do some tests, the purity of the sky was incredible and the ease of locating some objects that were almost invisible from the plain due to light pollution! I would like to put all the stars I saw yesterday in this review, but it's not possible! then only 5. Vega - Deneb - Arturo - Antares and Altair who kept us company throughout the evening together with the highly trained and friendly staff. Already knowing well the beauties of the sky having been an amateur astronomer for some time, it was an unforgettable experience for everyone. I will be back soon with other friends. (Original) Serata perfetta, cielo incredibilmente pulito, scuro, senza nuvole!

(Translated by Google) It was a wonderful experience! We were lucky because the sky was very clear. The evening was divided into stargazing, complete with very interesting explanations about constellations, legends, and so on. Then we spent part of the evening inside the planetarium, and finally we were able to observe with a telescope! What struck me most was the view of Saturn! The staff was kind and knowledgeable!

(Translated by Google) Found by chance to give as a gift. It was a nice discovery. Isolated from everything and everyone, it is the perfect place for astronomy enthusiasts and those who love nature. They organize several events to observe planets and stars. In the program that I chose there was also a walk in the woods, a short path taken under the moonlight, listening to the nocturnal life of some animals that live there. Really very nice experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The guides are also very kind and available to answer your questions. The ticket prices are really good, also taking into account the duration of the event (we started at around 9pm and was supposed to end at 11.30pm, but instead we finished at 12.30am). The road is perhaps the only point, it is not very comfortable but you can get there.

The laser sky displays, the digital planetarium, and the telescope observations were thrilling and engaging. The location is magnificent and makes the experience even more special. (Translated by Google) It was a very interesting experience; the staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Due to unexpected bad weather, the evening ended earlier than expected, so we weren't able to observe the sky through the telescope. Instead, we visited the on-site planetarium, which made the evening interesting nonetheless.
