Chachin waterfall - Hua Hum

Nature & Parks
Hiking area
Waterfalls
Easy walk through the gorgeous shady forest listening to the murmuring of the Chachin river, with a spectacular waterfall in the end as if the walk required a reward. Drawbacks? 50 km of a gravel road from San Martin - so better get a 4x4. As a bonus you ll be able to get to termas as well.

Great hike to a gorgeous waterfall on the west and of Lago Nonthué near the Chilean border.
Josiah R — Google review
Beautiful waterfall though you can't get very close to it. The path to the view deck is easy to walk and it takes about 20-40 mins depending on your peace. We went with my 1.5yo and he enjoyed it.
Juan F — Google review
A Nice, short Family walk leads to the beautiful waterfall. Some information boards along the way explain the plants and history of the area. Nice place but a long travel if you start in San Martin. You should combine it with some hikes in the National Park.
Markus U — Google review
It’s about 30min walk (steady walk) to the waterfall and about 200ft elevation difference with little slope. I don’t recommend it for elderly people as I saw a few that had to turn around. Overall the waterfall is beautiful and recommended for anyone who likes hiking
David A — Google review
We enjoyed the easy hike and lovely falls.
Suzanne E — Google review
We walked all the way from the information point near Hua Hum until the waterfall. It's a small walk in the woods, with a stop in a small shore with a beautiful sight of the Nuntuhe lake . The path signaling isn't great, but as long as you are aware of where are you going, it's hard to get lost. It's a beautiful walk with a slightly different vegetation from the rest of the lakes in the nearby. Be prepared, tho... It has some pretty agressive uphills. Nothing difficult, but it is tiresome if you are not in great shape. Once in the waterfall parking the path it's super easy to follow, and it has stopping points for resting and additional information. The waterfall itself is a show on it's own -- breathtaking.
Lucas G — Google review
A boat takes you to Park Lanin and then you have to walk for about 20 minutes, depending on your stamina, to reach the waterfall, enjoy the view and take some pictures.

Old Volcano Caverns

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Old Volcano Caverns offers a worthwhile tour with stunning views and informative guides. The journey begins with a bus ride followed by a challenging hike, but the knowledgeable guides make frequent stops to provide insights into the area's evolution, Patagonian flora and fauna. While the tours are primarily conducted in Spanish, guides make an effort to accommodate non-Spanish speakers. Visitors can explore three small caves, with the last one being larger and requiring some crawling.
Definitively recommended! You get to visit 3 little caves, with the last one being a bit larger. Guide speaks only in Spanish, but very charming and knowledgeable. Tour is approximately 2 1/2 hours with some hiking required. Last cave requires some crawling in order to get into the larger and darker part. This is optional and isn’t necessarily for claustrophobic people. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it though.
Laurent U — Google review
This is worth the time to come and visit. You need to be able to walk up a somewhat steep hill and crawl through one section of a cave. We showed up at the last minute for a 3pm tour without a reservation. They were very nice and help us get set up on the tour. They told us there was not an english speaking guide available but we went anyway. We used google translate's transcribe feature and kept up with all the great information. This is more than a cave exploring tour, they tell you a lot about the formation of the landscape, plants and animals from the region. You get a great view of the entire town and a different perspective than other lookouts around town. The parts when you're inside the cave are fun, you'll make use of the required hard hat.
Chris D — Google review
The caverns and the view from the tour are well worth the visit. The first part is a short bus ride up to the beginning of the foot path upward. It is a bit strenuous but Sebastian was a wonderful tour guide and stopped several times for explanations and rest. He described the evolution of the area and the plants and animals of Patagonia. And, although it was Spanish language only, he spoke slowly and with gestures to help the other language speakers understand the gist. The climb through the smallest part of the cavern is optional. (Hard hats and hands and knees) But, a lovely crystal clear pool is inside. And the view at the top of the tour is spectacular.
Janet S — Google review
Highly recommended. Short but great experience for what it's worth. Duration about 2 hours and a half. There are two sessions during the day, one at 11 am and the other at 3 pm. There are 3 caverns or caves which seemed like too simple but it has some stories to hear. Guide is really good and let us to catch our breaths in intervals during our ascent and gave us interesting highlights and amazing views. The tour gets better and better as you go further along the course, be ready to crawl on the last leg for about 6 feet and you'll be rewarded with a nice geological surprise. I was amazed that even an elderly man was able to crawl past it. I don't see any need for hiking boots. You cannot go on your own, it's only possible through paid guides but it's relatively inexpensive. You can go to the meeting point with your own car or request to pick you up at pre-determined hotel points.
Juan P — Google review
Fantastic tour, our guide was knowledgeable and friendly and even told us a lot of information in English (though the tour was Spanish). Highly recommended, and the children in our group enjoyed it too.
Rachel E — Google review
The guide is amazing & very interesting, the caves are great there is a small lake at the end. requires to bend down to get in ***The guide doesn’t speak English

Mirador Bandurrias

Mentioned on

Observation deck
Nature & Parks
Mirador Bandurrias offers stunning views of Lago Lacar extending westward towards the Chilean border. The ascent provides glimpses of the city, and visitors can choose to hike or drive to reach the mirador. The trail begins behind the wastewater treatment plant at the end of Juez del Valle street, with signs indicating the way. There is an entrance fee and a moderate one-hour walk to reach the mirador, with an additional 40-minute walk to a beach view.
it's definitely a hike up so bring lots of water - but the views are absolutely worth it! please note that you have to pay 5.000 pesos to enter Mapuche territory (2.000 if you're a resident of SMA).
Marie H — Google review
It’s amazing place to trek from the city. Easy and not difficult.from here you can have a nice view of the Lago Lacar and the snow clad mountains. The wind sometimes are very strong but seeing the view from here is really nice and amazing. I am sure that you will saw “wow” once you will reach here. There is a small fee of 1500 AR$ which the indigenous Mapuche peoples charge for the upkeep of the place but it is worth it
Imrajiv84 — Google review
Unique viewpoint and must see. It’s a hard and long drive on a gravel road, but doable with a normal sedan on a dry day. Can walk to it from San Martin de los Andes a d it probably takes the same amount of time. The Mapuche tribe sold tickets to the area for $5,000 pesos pp or about USD $5 each.
Lucas T — Google review
Please be aware that the fee is now 5,000 Argentine Pesos per adult if driving and 2,000 if walking. The view is pleasant but not outstanding for the area. The price of $20USD for 4 adults in a car is far too much for this very brief and unremarkable experience.
Simon K — Google review
Might be the best view of Lago Lacar, with a short distance hike approximately 1 hour up hill from San Martin.
Sagie R — Google review
Nice hike from the town if you are without a car. Views were nice. We paid $5000 per person to enter the view point, which seems extortionate, I think there might be a route to avoid this if needed. Later on we got chased by dogs near the water near a random house so be careful of this.
Emma B — Google review
This is an uphill hike with a lot of switch backs. We loved the views all along the hike and would definitely do this hike. It took about an hour to get to the top. It’s worth it! Bring trekking poles if you have them. It will save your knees and shins on the way down.
Georgia L — Google review
Pretty, accessible viewpoint. You have to pay 400 pesos because the trail passes through a mapuche village. Definitively worth it.

Scenic Drives
Embark on a breathtaking journey along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos, also known as the Seven Lakes road, for an unforgettable day trip from San Martin. This scenic drive offers mesmerizing views of the Andean landscapes and takes you past seven stunning lakes: Espejo, Correntoso, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, Machonico, and Lacar.
Wow. Probably the most beautiful drive in the world. Don't forget to go to Villa Traful as well. Make sure to take your time when coming so you can stop wherever you want and take amazing pictures. Also a great tip is to look for hikes before heading there so you can take a brake from driving to go up a mountain or near a lake.
Max L — Google review
A must when in the area. You can take guided tour or drive yourself all the way. The second option is more appropriate if you’re a good driver. Beautiful views.
Alberto C — Google review

Danielle S — Google review

Marie H — Google review
Beautiful drive with loads of adventure! From horses, cows, and sheep temporarily blocking the highway to long winding roads between snowcapped mountains, green valleys, and mirror lakes ... this route had it all. We drove it at the end of winter, but I think it's probably amazing year round. San Martin de Los Andes and Villa Angostura are two essential stops along the route. You can expect it to take all day but there's really no need to leave early unless you really want to savor every view point. You can get to San Martin for a late lunch or early dinner, then head back to Bariloche, assuming that's where you started. Staying the night in any of the three towns is probably easy. I saw a lot of signs showing availability. Driving through the Andes is an incredible experience, and I think this route might be one of the best. Of note, one route was under construction and didn't feel safe to drive. It was Route 65 to Villa Traful. Every other road felt very safe and comfortable.
Rob S — Google review
Below is a summary of the main points: Lago Espejo/Lake Mirror Enrique Wolff, an explorer, visited the lake in 1895 and named it Lake Espejo or Mirror to reflect how amazed he was at a lake that reflects as a mirror Lago Correntoso Chilean immigrants, who were farmers, first arrived here in 1898. They started growing wheat, potatoes, and oat , and raising cows and sheep. Throughout the region, there are numerous farmers with families on both sides of the border. The Argentinian border officers don’t bother them with papers as they use alternative routes. Lago Villarino Named after the Explorer who around 1750 wrote numerous dairies and maps which were critical for the Spanish civilization of Patagonia. Lago Falkner Lago Falkner’s, white sandy beach. Argentinian Explorers initially named this lake Moreno, honoring Perito Moreno. He renamed the lake. Thomas Falkner, in honor of an English Jesuit Explorer. Lago Escondido Escondido, in Spanish means hidden, the lake is truly hidden in a secluded location inside the forest. You will need to jump over to go down and appreciate it’s beauty
George B — Google review
Absolutely magical. Take route 40 at least from Bariloche to San Martín De Los Andes. I promise you, you won't regret it. Possibly the most picturesque time is either spring or fall.
Guille P — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful roads I've ever driven. A bit over 100 kilometers, it spans between San Martín de los Andes anda Villa la Angostura, two of my favourite cities in Argentina. You can breathe nature as you drive, cycle or walk through it, with many camping sites and beaches nearby. The water in any of the seven lakes is clean and pure, the trees are green, the sky is blue, what more could you ask for? A must in anyone's bucket list

Great lifts and well groomed tracks. Queuing are too messy and unorganized during high season. Leave early unless you want to spend one hour just trying to leave the Parking lot.

(Translated by Google) The service was good; if you arrive on time, the service is quick and efficient. The ski slopes are of good quality, offering a great experience for skiers of all levels, but they can get quite crowded, especially at peak times. As for the prices, although the services and facilities are good, they could be a little more affordable, considering the value for money. Overall, it is a good place to ski, but there are some areas for improvement. (Translated by Google) I bought the passes online. They closed the ski resort early (September 1st) without warning, and I couldn't use the pass for a single day. They denied me a refund, and it's also not transferable. I strongly recommend avoiding this ski resort (and the one in Bariloche, since they're owned by the same people). Go to Ushuaia or Chile. (Translated by Google) It's a shame to leave this review, since my family took classes. The instructors' human quality is excellent. The ski resort is incredible. It's a shame about the amount of snow, which is beyond belief. But I don't understand how they can have such poor organization in sales and rentals. They opened the season from one day to the next. Everyone crowded around to exchange tickets and others to buy them, lines two blocks long. Online sales only work with purchases made 72 hours in advance. Could this be expedited? We also rented equipment at the rental office at the base of the hill. Every day there's an endless line. People rush to get to their class or drop their child off at school. And what happens? We stopped taking care of ourselves... no masks 😷 everyone squeezed together to see if I could get in before someone else... they had the whole beginning of the year to get organized. It can't be the same line for the person measuring up and the person checking out... if we take care of ourselves, it should be a shared line... and the key part is organization! Don't worry, it could have been 5 stars! I hope they improve.

Mentioned on
2 lists
Volcano
Nature & Parks
Lanín is a striking stratovolcano located on the border of Chile and Argentina, boasting a conical shape and an ice-capped peak. The volcano is the centerpiece of Lanin National Park, offering stunning views that captivate travelers. While it has not erupted for thousands of years, occasional tremors keep its status active. For adventure seekers, climbing Lanín is possible but recommended only for experienced mountaineers or with professional guidance due to its steep inclines and snowy terrain.
Great place to visit. There are three routes to get to the very top, two of which are from Argentina (the south and north faces) and one from Chile. The north face is the most common route to use, whether for a one-day ascent (to get to the refuge camp and to go back) or a two-day ascent to get to the very top. Whichever one you chose, you won’t get disappointed. The route is not too challenging, but it is nevertheless tiring. It is recommended to get a good pair of hiking boots and sticks (if you don’t have them). If you are staying overnight in the camp, you will need a torch and a sleeping bag. Don’t forget to register with the national park if you are doing the ascent without a guide/tour.

Good weekend trip to explore Patagonia’s volcanoes: Excellent 2 day hike to get up Lanin. Day 1 we went up to the Refugio, slept there. On day 2 we started early and reached the Lanin peak. Hard work but you get fully rewarded - amazing and picturesque view from the peak. The hike to get up to the peak is technically not too difficult, no climbing equipment is needed though I would recommend to have crampons since the last bit is icy. 🌋🇦🇷

Parque Via Christi

Parque Via Christi is a must-visit attraction in Junin, offering a unique and relaxing experience. Spending at least a full day here is recommended, especially on sunny days. The park features the impressive sculptures of Jesus and the beautiful Puente Banana, making it perfect for nature lovers and art enthusiasts alike. The strong Christian theme adds to its allure, creating a magical atmosphere that shouldn't be missed.
I recommend to visit Junin for 2 main attractions, this being one of them. No need to stay one night but you may need a full day, especially if sunny. At least 4 hrs at park jesus and 2 hrs at punte banana. From Neuquen or San Martin (250 pesos bus) is really worth it. The park was unique and very relaxing. The artist is very unique. The puente is lovely and beautiful pics to remember this small city. This park is daring because it can really trigger those Christian fanatics. The sculpture artist is daring and very thought provoking. It is amazing how a small town can turn an ordinary pine tree forest into a masterpiece. Price is 400 pesos. You get an amazing pine tree landscape, mountains views, free range horses wandering around, a 3 hr hike and art. All in one place for a great price.

I am not religious, but this spot is really interesting. I am a big fan of art and sculptures. Even if you just look around, even the nature is beautiful. And it's not that popular, so don't worry about long lines or crowds if you have anxiety like me.

It is a visit that admits a wide spectrum of looks: admirable from the religious, anthropological point of view, from the infrastructure and architecture, from a walk in a natural environment. If it is desired to learn and to know the work from the religious, its greater symbolic potential, it is suggested to make the visit with guide.

Museo Paleontológico Municipal Ernesto Bachmann

Museum
Specialty Museums
Museo Paleontológico Municipal Ernesto Bachmann in Neuquen may be small, but it holds some remarkable exhibits. Visitors can marvel at dinosaur nests, replicas of local discoveries, and a fascinating ancient shark jaw that's a popular spot for photos. Despite its size, the museum never fails to impress its visitors with its dramatic displays. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and have an interest in paleontology.
It is a small museum but worth the stop. It has great specimens and lots of information about the dinosaurs found in this area of Argentina. I recommend downloading the virtual dinosaur. So much fun. The little row of gift houses was great too. Go down the road in town along the lake to see the imprints in the rocks of where the dinosaurs walked!!

This is an amazing Dinosaur Museum which is located about one (1) hour outside of Neuquen Capital City and many people have recommended it to me. They have several rooms with exhibits and replicas on Dinosaurs and there is even a place just a few kilometers away by the Lago Ezequiel Ramos Mexia where you can even see Dinosaur Footprints. Wow! I personally want to Thank Joe and Shelley from the Iglesia Bautista Biblica Church in Neuquen Capital City for taking ME there back on Sunday, April 16, 2017. I personally want to Thank Maria Rosas for the fantastic and detailed tour! I will Never forget this Experience! Such a beautiful place! I loved the personal touch; you can really tell that they care deeply for the animals. They put so much work and love into each one. Additionally, they know all of their animals’ names, their stories about how they arrived there, and their individual behaviors. Our favorite person was Navi. She was so kind and shared lots of fascinating facts about each animal. If you ever take the tour, be sure to book it with her! I was really surprised, as I expected it to be more like a zoo. On the contrary, it truly blew my mind! The facilities for each animal are impressive, the place is exceptionally clean, and the surroundings are absolutely beautiful. It's worth noting that all the animals you’ll find in Bucalco have been rescued, either from the city zoo or from owners who were unable to care for them properly.

I am really happy that I visited zoo today back on Saturday, April 22, 2017! It was highly recommended and it was also listed on the tourist map all the way from Neuquen Capital City of Argentina. This zoo is fairly new and has been open for the past seven (7) years. I also think that the selection of animals are very nice to see as you can see in the pictures that I have provided on Google. I also want to personally thank Andrea Soriano for providing me with a Fantastic Tour and for allowing me to feed Rosalie the Parrot. If you are ever in the area of Rio Negro, Argentina then please come and visit the Bubalco Zoo because it is well worth it. Sincerely yours, Howard Paul Shore... HOWARD S — Google review
Complete animal abuse. It's really sad because so many small zoos like this still exist all over the world and are unregulated. In theory, some zoos could be beneficial if the animals were indeed rescued and/or there were conservation programs enacted but this is not one of those cases. When I visited, it was in the middle of winter (30°F) and of course all the animals have tiny shelters where they can sleep at night but they are very small and dark. Naturally, the animals need sunlight and outdoor time so they're outside shivering and if they're lucky to be with others, huddling to keep warm. The enclosures are small and have no stimulation or proper environmental foilage or anything. The birdcages were tiny and only had two branches for the birds to roost on. The monkeys looked extremely lonely, a chimpanzee and two other types by themselves when they are clearly social animals. Overall a very sad experience.

I recommend it and would return more often in the spring to see everything green. Points of Interest & Landmarks
Plaza Rivadavia is a charming urban square adorned with monuments that pay tribute to the local history. Over the weekends, it becomes a hub for craft fairs. The plaza exudes elegance and timelessness, evoking nostalgic memories of early morning journeys to school during winter. Although some areas lack sufficient grass due to heavy usage over the years, this seems inevitable and adds character to its overall appeal.
Classy and almost timeless. Plaza Rivadavia brings memories of early morning crossing in the cold of winter to get on time to class at Colégio Nacional. I would love to see more grown grass. I can tell people uses it a lot more that 40 years ago. Maybe that is why has some areas going bold... But who isn't, right? Part of life. Happy to go across it again.

(Translated by Google) The park is very beautiful. Today, June 14, we had a bad experience climbing Cerro Ventana. They estimate the ascent to take only 5 hours, and we had to go down with my family because my wife was going a little slower than the group. She wasn't fatigued at all; she just couldn't go any faster. At the second or third stop, our guide, Lucia, forced us to descend. I understand there are safety issues that the group can't go too late, but we could easily wait for Ivan, at a pace that, even for me, who trains daily, was fast. No one in the group was very fit, unlike my wife, who trains regularly. There were even people over 60 who were smokers. The craziest thing was that they let us climb to a point where a guide wasn't needed, and then they didn't refund us a single cent of the 60,000 we paid between the four of us. Truly shameful, and even more so, they were misinformed about everything. Anyway... I wasn't the only one affected; there were other people with the same issue, even a female Pilates instructor. They're not serious. The rest of the trails for people invalidate how we do very poorly maintained and marked.

He was very friendly, concerned that everyone was doing their best, and the overall treatment was excellent. The difficulty depends on each person's physical condition; I found it easy. The hardest part is the first because the climb is very steep. Up to the fourth, you can turn back alone if you're tired. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person and food (fruit, sandwiches, bars, etc.). It's very important to wear appropriate footwear; there are many sections where you walk on stones, and it's very slippery.

(Translated by Google) The place is very nice, but considering the mandatory guided tour, they charge a lot and rush you if you don't go at their very fast pace. You can't even enjoy the scenery for even two minutes, and the climb becomes much more difficult. I don't recommend it because of the service. I saw other people complain about the same guide I had; his name was Nico, so be mindful of who you get. It's a tour that takes approximately 6 hours and requires a fair amount of effort, but it's easily doable (depending on your physical condition). The price is $20,000, which is justified. You have to be there by 9 a.m., which is when the groups form and start heading out. Thanks for a lovely day! (Original) 10 puntos!! Hermosa experiencia. Nuestros guía Damián un 10!! (Translated by Google) The first stretch (from the base to Station 1) is killer. It's a little intimidating, but it gets less steep afterward. At this station, you can choose to get off and continue along the trail to the pools and Forgotten Gorge (we didn't do it, but we were told there was little water). There are 10 stations in total. Up to the 4th, you can descend on your own. If you decide not to continue past the 4th, the whole group will join you, as they can't leave you alone. From Station 5 to Station 8, there are larger rocks that require longer strides. From Station 8 to Station 10, it's peaceful. The views are unparalleled. So it's worth it. The guide "Ruso" was spectacular. I highlight him because half of it was the scenery and the other half was his company and explanations of the area. The entrance fee to the Park was $1,000, and the ascent to the hill was $7,500, per person. We were lucky enough to form a large group of 30 people (out of season, fewer usually go) and saw a Black-backed Eagle, a Guanaco, and other examples of the local fauna and flora. Since we visited the park during Holy Week and there were a lot of people, the groups were quite close together, and we couldn't stay long when we arrived at the Window. We quickly took photos and left. I understand this is so that more people can visit. During peak season, I recommend going very early; the gate opens at 7:30 a.m., but people already gather before then. We went at 7:00 a.m., and there was already a line of cars. Since the capacity is only 300 people, once it's full, it closes. This happened to us the first day we tried, and we were left outside.

(Translated by Google) Very nice place, I would have liked the tasting wines to be more than one, but fine. As other people said, the girl with the guide seemed like she wanted to leave, and explained everything very quickly. It doesn't bother me, because it was well understood. The tour lasts 15-20 minutes. They don't offer any other tastings, such as cheeses or toasts to accompany the wine. The wine itself is too young, and therefore, for someone who really likes wine like me, I found it undrinkable. The white wine is good, the red wine really isn't. It's nice to go for a tour. The woman who helps you in the sales area is very unfriendly and unfriendly. That's a shame, because she's the one who welcomes you and makes you want to leave. Regarding the guided tour, they could improve the tour, passing more through the vineyards or the cellar, and not just staying in the part of the tanks. On the other hand, the tasting was divine, with a lot of information and a snack with enough cheese (ideal for vegetarians) and ham to enjoy. The attention was always very friendly.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful place! But they no longer allow you to go up just to walk around it! (Original) Hermoso lugar!
