The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, located in the Scottish Highlands, is a unique and enchanting experience for nature enthusiasts and families. It is home to Britain's only free-ranging herd of reindeer. Visitors can join daily guided hill trips to interact with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The tour takes you on a scenic journey into the Cairngorm Mountains where you can feed and pet the friendly reindeer.
Second time visiting. It's a wonderful experience. The walk up the hill is short and beautiful, with a bridge crossing quite a big stream. The enthusiasm of the staff is heart warming. Best of all is getting to feed the reindeer where you can feel just how soft their noses are. Definitely book if you are in the area.

Simply amazing. The hike wasn’t that long or hard, and the scenery was stunning. We got to be up close and personal with a ton of reindeer. My whole group enjoyed feeding them and taking a TON of pictures. Kate and Lottie were informative and answered all of the questions we had about the reindeer. I definitely recommend booking a hill tour hike in advance for your group. It’s an absolute must for a trip through the Cairngorms!
Kirstin C — Google review
We did not do the tour to see the reindeer in their natural habitat because the guide and signs everywhere warn how difficult the trek is. But, they do bring the deer down on a rotating basis for people who can't make the trip to see. I bought some beautiful original art here to support this center and their cause to protect these lovely creatures.
Sharon C — Google review
We had a fantastic few hours with the herd, such a brilliant experience. The three herders we had were so informative and answered all of our questions without hesitation. The walk to the herd was fantastic in itself, beautiful scenery, and the 30 second shower of rain we had made the most glorious rainbow. Worth every penny
Vicky D — Google review
An amazing experience seeing the reindeer up close and feeding them. It's a bit of an uphill walk to get to them but well worth it. If you're bringing a campervan, park on the road when you get to the reindeer centre as the car park has a really sharp turn on the exit. You're only at the centre for a short time before driving to another car park to begin the walk up to the herd. Absolutely recommend this reindeer experience!
Heather H — Google review
Wonderful experience, the reindeer nose is so soft and docile. I am sure the kids will be thrilled with the encounters, no need to travel to Scandinavian country to experience. There are multiple sessions each day from 11am, website advised pre-booking is essential. A short walk to the free ranging area. Also if you take the fork, there is a nice short trail, don't miss it since you are here.
Khin — Google review
Fabulous experience doing the hill walk and meeting 35 reindeer up close. Our guides Beni and Maisey were super knowledgeable and friendly. We visited on a gorgeous July day, so the walk was pretty easy and mostly dry. You must be comfortable with lots of trail stairs (made of rocks), but otherwise not very strenuous. This was one of the highlights of our Scotland visit.
Christine I — Google review
I’ll admit I was a bit worried this might turn out to be a tourist trap, but I’m so glad we went. Getting up close with the reindeer and feeding them was absolutely worth it – after all, when’s the next time you get to do that in your life? Big thanks to Amy and Daisy for such a brilliant experience. We loved every minute. It’s a great activity for big kids (adults) as well as little ones. And just to note: the climb up is really short – even the kids in our group managed it with no trouble.

Glamis Castle, a 14th-century fortress and the childhood home of the late Queen Mother, offers guided tours of its opulent interiors. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural history of the region and walk in the footsteps of historical figures like Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The castle's interior is adorned with period furnishings, suits of armor, hunting trophies, and manicured stone steps.
A stunning historic castle with breathtaking architecture and beautifully maintained gardens. The guided tour was very informative, giving a glimpse into royal history and fascinating stories. A must-visit for anyone exploring Scotland!
Subhadeep B — Google review
Visited on a Monday lunchtime in the October school holidays, not busy and the tour was fantastic. So interesting and informative, no video or photos allowed inside. The gardens are huge. Kitchen and Italian gardens were beautiful, café lunch was fresh and tasty
Becca — Google review
Really enjoyed the house & grounds. The tour guide was so knowledgeable & I enjoyed learning lots about the history & characters of the house's history. We were lucky with a great autumn day but also really liked the Macbeth loop.
Susannah L — Google review
First time visiting Glamis Castle and it was lovely. The castle itself is absolutely breathtaking from the outside and our tour guide John was very entertaining and definitely knew his stuff. The castle was a vast history was damaged in battles, renovated and upgraded in various ways as well. The gardens and various pine walks are beautiful as well, during the tour John mentioned the gardens were designed first and then the castle followed. That is evident when you take pictures of either of them, the garden is so picturesque and flows very well. Overall well worth the ticket price and visit. I recommend going early morning and leaving before the afternoon rush.
Shireen — Google review
Glamis Castle has the most beautiful grounds. We didn't have enough time to do the Castle tour but definitely coming back for it! We were there on a cloudy day but the whole space just makes you feel amazing! All staff are very nice and helpful and its credit to the staff who maintain this beautiful site!

Was passing by and was recommended to have a visit and I’m glad that I did! An incredible castle with extensive grounds that are all looked after immaculately. The tour was great, Abi was our guide and she did a wonderful job. Didn’t have much time to really take everything in so will definitely be back when next in the area.

Lovely Castle with such a rich history. So great to see it in such good condition and still in the same family. We went on a guided tour and the host was very informative with a few quirky tales.

Bon Scott Statue

Mentioned on
1 list
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
The Bon Scott Statue in Kirriemuir is a popular tourist attraction for fans of the AC/DC frontman. The statue pays tribute to the legendary musician with intricate details on his tattoos and bagpipes. Despite mistakenly receiving a one-star review, visitors corrected their mistake after seeing the beauty and fitting tribute of the statue. AC/DC continues to honor Scott's memory by performing hits from their time together in Kirriemuir, making it a must-see destination for music lovers.
In July 2025, I visited the Bon Scott monument in Kirriemuir. Bon is one of my personal heroes, so it was great fun to visit and take photos there. Definitely worth doing if you're in the area and you like AC/DC. It's a shame that someone who became so famous hasn't been given a more prominent place in the village instead of being tucked away in a corner of a car park. I would argue for relocation.
Bram S — Google review
Birthplace of Bon Scott. Ex lead singer with AC/DC. Worth a visit for photo opportunity.
Gav L — Google review
Any ac/dc fan would want to see the statue where he was brought up before leaving for Australia.
Ronnie B — Google review
a must for any ACDC fan when visiting Scotland Standing proudly in Kirriemuir, the Bon Scott Statue is a heartfelt tribute to one of rock music's most iconic frontmen. Born Ronald Belford Scott in in 1946, Bon spent his early childhood in Kirriemuir before his family emigrated to Australia in 1952. There, he rose to fame as the charismatic lead singer of AC/DC, leaving an indelible mark on the world of rock before his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 33.

///owner.darling.newlywed I had to ask where the staue was. I've now included the What three words designation above of his staue. Well worth a visit. Currently free parking (bonus). There is also other Bon Scott memorabilia in the museum and a commemorative plaque in the town.

A fine statue in a nice little setting, shows a real likeness of the great man. You can get up and get your selfie no problem! Also some nice information about Bon Scott. If you're in the area it is well worth a visit.

Loch Muick

Bodies of Water
Loch Muick, pronounced "Mick," is a stunning natural lake located at the foot of Lochnagar in the Cairngorms. It is situated on the Balmoral estate and offers a popular walking route with picturesque views of surrounding hills. The circular route starts from Spittal of Glenmuick and passes by a small boathouse before reaching Glas-allt Shiel, which was built by Queen Victoria as a quiet retreat.
A must do walk (if you are able). Stunning scenery. We walked the 8 mile circular route around the Loch. Note at the South East corner the wide path narrows significantly and becomes a single file rocky path. It took us 2 hrs 45 mins at a steady pace. There are a few other routes available. (See map attached) A North Easterly wind on the day made a pleasant 10 degrees feel chilly and jackets were required. Of course 5 mins later the sun was out and jackets off. 😆 There is parking for around 200 cars in three separate cars parks. It costs £5 for a day ticket. Highly Recommend. 😎
Ewan W — Google review
Brilliant walk, amazing views across various trails, lots of them to choose from. Some shorter than others but most are lengthy so if that's your thing then go for it! The one around the loch offers great views and the difficulty is rather easy so good for beginner walkers. We walked up to the top of black hill and then back down and around the loch which was quite lengthy but worth it, especially the walk around the loch. The view from up black hill was great but you'd probably get better ones from atop different peaks around the area. Overall a brilliant experience, stunning nature views and a great glance at the estate.
Arek J — Google review
Beautiful, we did the 8 mile circuit around the Loch, with bikes. Not one of my best ideas but worth it,
Steven O — Google review
Best and moderate trekking place with amazing views if you're near to Aberdeen and shire. 2 major routes one is circuit and the other is getting to top and both are very reachable and can be done with in 4-5 hours combined. If you're lucky you will see stags - largest I've seen in scotland from that close
Bhanu G — Google review
We came on a little family holiday to Ballater, my son being obsessed with nature was desperate to see some Red deer stags. We were told by so many people that the stags would be hiding away in the hills but today we got lucky. The walk, the views, the wildlife was just breathtaking. The weather was mostly sunny with showers of rain, windy but warm. Would 100% recommend a visit.
Amy R — Google review
It is worth visiting, leaving the car in the car park. Walk 15-20 minutes to the lake. Spectacular views, only it rained the whole way.
Ruta R — Google review
We had a memorable time together hiking around Loch Muick. We walked from Ballater to the loch which took us around 4 hours. We enjoyed our hike, deers running around and the natural beauty around loch.

Located in Angus, the Glenesk Folk Museum is one of the UK's pioneering museums to use living history for educating visitors. The museum has a growing collection and is now housed in a newly refurbished center. Visitors can experience interactive exhibits, dress up in period clothing, and engage with historical artifacts. The museum showcases agricultural items and local area history. There's also a donation system to support the museum's upkeep. Additionally, there's a cafe offering soup, sandwiches, scones, and cakes.
Lovely museum! Very educational and very welcoming and kind staff. Me and my partner will certainly be back! The soup and Victoria sponge cake was so tasty😋

This is such a lovely, warm and homely folk museum capturing the history of life in Glen Esk. It feels like the things are kept with love and care as by family members, wonderful stories of most noticeable characters, their belongings and photos. Cafe and community room is such a cozy space. All run by volunteers. Enjoyed the visit a lot!
D F — Google review
Lovely cafe for cakes and hot drinks. Large second hand bookshop . Museum shop has hand made gifts and art from local artists/crafters. Lots of local photos and maps current and old Signs around the place often funny Very friendly staff Displays offer good local information. Lots of variety. Only thing letting it down was the internal temperature. We should have worn warmer clothes as it was warmer outside.
Helen S — Google review
Visit Angus says the museum is free, with donations accepted, as does the information on Google, as does a notice board right outside the museum, however when you get in the door you see that it is £5 to get in. Charging entry is absolutely fine, these things cost money to keep going, it's totally acceptable, but being deceptive is not ok and leaves a sour taste. I get that things online might be outdated, but there's no excuse for still having it advertised as free on a board at the premises.
Emma S — Google review
traveled from Newcastle to this beautiful heritage site and landmark, very dog friendly museum and welcome insided, the staff are very friendly, please ask david for his tour! the food and hot drinks were lovley 10/10

It’s a delightful place to go in, the volunteers are very friendly, the museum is very interesting and wonderful to find a nice little cafe in the middle of nowhere. It was a perfect place to go. Having gone past the museum many times on our way to the hills, we took the opportunity to call in and were not disappointed.

Have driven past the museum probably about 100 times Decided to actually go in today Fantastic place Very enjoyable Loads of curiosities, they also have things to do especially for kids The cafe is also lovely We already had our lunch with us , but bought some cake and a couple of gifts The staff are very pleasant and lovely people Next time we go hiking will definitely come in even if just to the cafe

Linn of Dee Pl is a charming single-lane road flanked by classic rural residences and a delightful guest cottage. Additionally, it serves as the starting point for the demanding 20-mile Lairig Ghru hike, which traverses a mountain pass between Coylumbridge near Aviemore and Linn of Dee above Braemar. This challenging trek typically begins from the east to benefit from favorable wind and sunlight, requiring prearranged transportation at both ends.

Braemar Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Historical place museum
Braemar Castle, an elegant 17th-century fortress, is the ancestral home of Clan Farquharson and is nestled amidst the lush greenery of Aberdeenshire. Despite its picturesque surroundings, the castle has a rich military history and has played a significant role in Scotland's development. It also holds cultural significance as it once hosted Queen Victoria during the traditional Highland Games.
We were actually on our way to visit the Linn of Dee when by chance, we saw this castle nestling in the trees. It was a gem and definitely worth visiting. We paid for parking before the short walk to the castle, passing the Fog House, a small timber building the owners used to show their visitors the countryside. Back to the castle, we paid for our visit and with a guide sheet, we had to follow the custom. Before every person or family start their tour, they have to ding the Braemar Castle "ships bell" just outside the main door. (The bell is from the SS Braemar Castle which was sold for scrap in 1924). With the bell rung, we began our tour. What was interesting was "how homely" the rooms felt, like visiting an elderly relatives home. Although the castle was small, good use of the round towers was made, as washing places. There were some interesting facts to note as we walked around. This Castle is community funded and volunteer run. They have a little shop offering a small selection of gifts. There is a small children play area with a chess set. This is a place that's worth visiting.
Anthony H — Google review
Very nice well kept castle. Well worth the entrance fee to help with the upkeep. Very friendly and helpful team who welcome you in from the outside. You can walk around yourself or pay for a guide. We chose to just take our selves around. Lots of interesting rooms and history ! Well worth a visit !
Matt H — Google review
It was a nice surprise. We did not plan to visit it but you cannot miss it from the road. The tour is about 30mn , but you can easily spent 1h. You will find a lot of history details about Scotland, and the clan living here. I loved the room about the clan with all the weapons and rocks.
Laurent G — Google review
I've been to many historical sites on my Scotland visits but the staff and volunteers here are amazing. The presentation given by the staff for people unable to make the tour were phenomenal! A special thanks to ol' Morris for keeping the castle safe and an even bigger thanks to the community that makes this site accessible for anyone. The rich history of the site is amazing and the knowledge of the staff and volunteers is an absolute treat for any visitors.
J. P — Google review
We had a wonderful tour with Doreen through the castle. She told us so much that we probably would not have known or noticed on our own. We love that the castle is run by the local community.
Gwen G — Google review
Beautifully restored castle and fantastic visitor experience. Excellent self-guided tour with the aid of the Bloomberg Connects mobile app, which has floor plans, audio and video guides to each of the Castle's sympathetically restored rooms. It's worth downloading the app and multimedia content before you visit. I recommend bringing your own personal headphones to listen to the audio on your mobile device as I wasn't sure if they provided equipment. I thought the admission price was quite reasonable considering the entry and parking fees go towards the vital upkeep of the castle, which is under community care. The staff guides are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
Bob M — Google review
Stepping into Braemar Castle is like turning the pages of a captivating history book. We were taken on a journey that showed us how this impressive structure transformed from a no-nonsense redcoat garrison into a glamorous high-society escape. The stories of its Royal visitors and the many colorful characters who lived within its walls are brought to life by the knowledgeable guides. If you want to get a true feel for the history of the area and the people who shaped it, a visit to Braemar Castle is an absolute must. It's a truly memorable experience. There is a paid parking area outside the castle entrance.

Outdoor Activities
Cairn Gorm, a 4,084-ft mountain in Scotland, is renowned for its domed summit and offers various activities such as hiking trails, a ski resort, and a funicular. It's not the highest peak in the Cairngorm mountains but is still popular among walkers. On clear days, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Highlands from the summit. The mountain also features a station where visitors can enjoy reasonably priced food.
Fantastic views. Worth the trek! Ensure adequate clothing as it much cooler and that you have the right footwear. It is fairly challenging going down hill with snow & ice.
Ying H — Google review
Gandalf must have walked up at some point and commanded the rocks to form into a nice staircase for a good chunk of the route. Well done Gandalf. One has to pass the skeletal remains of spidery ski lifts and snow machines, which looks absurd in the warmer months, but once above these there's a sense of some wildness (apart from Gandalf's DIY obvs). 10/10

Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Distillery
Food & Drink
Located in Ballater, Scotland, the Royal Lochnagar Distillery has a rich history dating back to 1826 when it was founded by James Robertson. The distillery is named after the Lochnagar estate and holds a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria since 1848. It is renowned for its grassy-green, lightly firm whisky and exports to over 100 countries worldwide.
Today we did a wonderful tour of the Royal Lochnager Distillery, just outside of Ballater. The distillery is right next to the Balmoral estate and has been making whisky for the royal family since Queen Victoria. Our guide, Angie, was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional and made the tour a lot of fun. The tour showed the whisky making process (everything is done here the old fashioned way to preserve the tradition), a tasting, and at the end Stacy bought me my own bottle, which I poured directly from a cask. My bottle is number 87 of approximately 500 worldwide.
Jon S — Google review
On my way to visit the Balmoral Castle, I was recommended to see this place for tasting. As you recognise, this place has got “royal” title which is quite rare among the distilleries. Once I stepped in, the staff was amazing and very helpful. I ve also got nice tricks for tasting a scotch and my point of view to whiskey is totally positively changed. I know what I am not supposed to do while drinking scotch anymore ☺️ Thanks everyone there
Melih U — Google review
Visiting Royal Lochnagar Distillery was an absolute highlight of our trip. The distillery is charming, beautifully located, and rich in history. The tour was very well organized, with clear explanations of the whisky-making process and a welcoming atmosphere throughout. We especially appreciated how everything was presented with such detail and passion, which made the experience both educational and enjoyable. Stuart, our guide, was excellent and added to the overall quality of the visit. A must-see for anyone interested in Scotch whisky and Scottish heritage!
Bruno M — Google review
Hung out with Stuart (guide) here for an afternoon. Wonderfully self-deprecating humor, he had. Lovely walk from the castle nearby and you get 15% off if you show your castle ticket. Incredibly mild, but still complex whiskies. Great old distillery with lots of history, exposed stone and wood. I think I’ll have another.

Balmoral Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Balmoral Castle is a Scottish Baronial-style mansion and serves as the summer residence for the royal family. The estate was purchased in 1852 by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband. The current castle was constructed to replace the original one, which was deemed too small. It remains the property of the Queen and includes extensive grounds with moorland, woodland, farmland, a fold of Highland cattle, red deer, and even a whisky distillery.
Fabulous fairytale like Castle, absolutely stunning grounds and woodland, plenty of walks and fun activities for the children. Very interesting historical and current caveats displayed in the ballroom. Great place to enjoy a picnic, but especially by the river Dee.
Kathleen K — Google review
Bought an interior tour ticket way in advance which means you get priority parking at the castle too which was really handy- was able to leave things in the car (jacket, umbrella etc) and picked them up in the afternoon when needed. Arrived in advance and was let in for an early start. Overall such a calm, incredibly beautiful estate with flowers, lawns, a river, outdoor buildings and enjoyed the interior tour too. Albert‘s pyramid / cairn is a separate walk outside the grounds which I hadn‘t realised. Great cafe next to the castle.

Such a wonderful experience to walk around the grounds and view the Castle. It was so beautiful. The Restaurant was amazing with excellent quality food. The Shop was beautifully stocked and the displays where awesome. Just a fantastic experience ✨️ Thank You

I enjoyed my visit and it was very interesting to see all the new planting taking place, especially the trees and maze. You do need to go when the weather is fine because there would be few places to shelter in the rain. I would recommend asking for an audible guide. This wasn't offered when I purchased my ticket and I believe it would have made my experience more interesting.

Thank You to HRH King Charles III for the new wonderful, colourful flower, tree & shrub displays. The best in the country, such Vision. Our 4pm house tour was incredible, historic and we felt much closer to the Royal Family. Well done also to your team of hard workers.

One of the best places you can visit in Scotland. It is still used by his majesty the King and his family but as you might guess visitors are not allowed to get inside the castle. Only one room is included for visitors which is “ball room” that you can find many beautiful details carved and painted inside. Gardens are amazing. Especially the river walk trail is calming and relaxing with the sweet sound of river Dee. If you are interested in distillery tours keep your Balmoral Castle ticket so that you can get %15 discount on Royal Lochnagar Distillery which is located nearby.

I have a special attachment to this castle since my grandmother and grandfather worked and met. I brought my grandson here to show him. The grounds are large, and the gardens are well maintained. We were only allowed into the ballroom, but that was impressive. There is a restaurant where you can have tea or lunch. I was surprised on how good the food was and how reasonable the price was.
Arose58 — Google review
Very quiet and tranquil place to visit. The grounds are extremely well presented and amazing views. Only 1 room which was a hall you visit which had an interesting display for the history of the castle. There are nice walks around the castle and on site cafe. It's a long drive to get there but great day out.

Loch an Eilein is a picturesque freshwater lake located in the Scottish Highlands near Aviemore. It features a walking trail around its circumference, offering serene views and a chance to explore historic castle ruins on an island within the lake. The parking fee of 1.50 per person is considered reasonable, and visitors can enjoy amenities such as a small shop selling local crafts, tea, coffee, and snacks.
A really nice place to visit! I rented a bike and went around the loch, which was a very enjoyable experience 🤩 even better if I could bring my dog here. It also seems to be a good place for swimming and other water sports.

Beautiful peaceful place. Single track road to car park, small shop for ice cream & drinks.

One of the visits I liked most on my trip to Scotland. A beautiful walk around the lake, seeing a small castle on the water. One of the very few places with free parking.

A fabulous 3.25 mile walk around the beautiful Loch an Eilein. The scenery is outstanding, and it’s a lovely place for a wild swim too!
Michelle B — Google review
A perfect place for a leisurely stroll around the loch. We came back this time with our daughter who loved playing in the rocks. I’d highly recommend this place for a visit.
Oliver W — Google review
We chose this spot because it was recommended for having an overnight car park. After a long drive, we were shocked to find the price had jumped from £15 last year to £38 this year — more than double. What was once a busy, welcoming and beautiful spot no longer feels worth the cost. A real shame, as it now seems like motorhomes are being priced out of what used to be a wonderful place to stay.. email of complaint inbound.

Lovely place to visit for a walk and relax. Well looked after path around the Loch with astonishing views of the island and castle in the middle of the loch. Lots of history about the Wolf of the Badenoch. Large parking area with toilets nearby. The shop has some local produce along with souvenirs.

Best walk ever in Scotland for me, beautiful views of mountains and lochs, the castle on the small island in the middle of the loch was just ethereal ⭐

Rothiemurchus Estate is a Highland estate that boasts a 13th-century island castle and offers abundant wildlife and outdoor activities. The estate stretches from the River Spey at Aviemore to the Cairngorm summit plateau, featuring one of Scotland's largest remnants of Caledonian forest, home to red squirrels, capercaillie, and Scottish wildcats. Visitors can also explore nearby farm shops in Grantown on Spey and Nethybridge for local produce.
A wonderful experience feeding the deer! My children truly enjoyed getting close, touching, and feeding them. The guide was very kind, shared interesting information about the deer, and answered all our questions with patience. We highly recommend this activity for visitors, especially families and Arab tourists, to enjoy this unique experience in Scotland

We attended the Highlands Falconry and that was an incredible experience! The birds were so gorgeous and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience to be able to handle them. We love it!! After a quick lunch at the barn, we hiked around Loch an Eileen. this was an easy hike with a lovely wide path and beautiful views of the loch. from the car park it was 3.5 miles loop.

We visited the hairy coos safari as a family of 4. We all enjoyed it and it was a good experience for the kids. We also hired bike to go around the area. Overall the staff are friendly and very welcoming. We will definitely come back soon and try more activities that could suit my kids age.

We did the Coo Safari. It was awesome! Lots of hands on experience with young cows (2 years and under) Vickie was our guide and was very knowledgeable of the property and of course the Coo's! They were so cute. The roads were well maintained and easy to follow along with any vehicle. We would definitely do it again!

What a wonderful experience. Entirely worth doing and suitable for all ages (56 year olds) and we felt fully worked out after. The guides Ben and Olly were so attentive and knew how to support the group and encourage us. It is a nippy cold experience, but you hardly notice it when you’re so caught up with the rapids.

Went on the intermediate pony trek. What more can you want? Highland ponies in the Highlands!! The ride was lead by a lady with a wealth of knowledge on the ponies and the estate. I really enjoyed it. Very highly recommend.

We were on holiday and visited Rothiemurchus for both White water tubing with Full on Adventures and quad biking with Quad Bike Treks. The instructors for both activities were approachable, professional,, and we were made to feel comfortable straight away. The scenery for both activities was amazing.. We went up to the River Feshie for the tubing and on the local estate for the quad biking. We also visited the cafe for lunch, which was excellent and bought some of the Highland Rothiemurchus Beef from the shop. Great tasting food. Great quality. All in all, a very positive experience. We're happy to recommend it. 😀

Autekre 2 — Google review

Strathspey Railway - Aviemore Station

Tours
Strathspey Railway, located in Aviemore, offers heritage steam locomotive rides between Aviemore and Broomhill. The train features a dining car where visitors can enjoy afternoon tea during the journey. The railway is accommodating for families and even allows dogs on board, except in first class and dining carriages. With only three departures per day, it's recommended to catch the first departure around 11am and return on the latest train at approximately 3pm.
Took a trip on old steamy - the Strathspey Highlander from Aviemore and back which was a nice holiday experience. We chose the observation carriage which was comfortable, spacious and not busy on the day. It was however, roasting as the sun filled the carriage with its heat through the numerous windows. We were served tea, coffee and biscuits on our journey as we relaxed taking in the scenery. Stops were Boat of Garten and Broomhill which gave us the chance to stretch the legs for 10 minutes.

Didn’t ride the train this time, but loved visiting the Strathspey Railway. Friendly volunteers, great atmosphere, and even got platform tickets for some photos with my 85mm lens. Knowing it’s run entirely by volunteers makes it even more special. Can’t wait to come back for the full trip!

I went to ride on the steam train from Aviemore to Broomhill and return with my parents when we were on holiday in Scotland and I am very pleased to say that our experiences were absolutely amazing! The volunteers were very friendly and helpful, the steam locomotive and carriages that we rode on were all immaculate, the views of the beautiful countryside was absolutely stunning and the journey was restful! Thank you to the volunteers for their amazing hospitality and service!

Brilliant experience going on the steam train, we sat in standard seats but ther is a trolly service. Afternoon tea is available too. Loved it. Got off at Boat of Garten and had a wonder then got next train back. The Observation carriage is brilliant too.

Great experience and very well organised. We did the “light lunch” and it was nicely presented. The trip to Broomhill and back is a great day out, with stunning scenery all the way.
Eric R — Google review
Review of Strathspey Railway (Aviemore Station) The Strathspey Railway is a delightful heritage attraction based at Aviemore Station, offering visitors the chance to step back into the golden age of rail travel. From the moment you arrive on Platform 3, the atmosphere is filled with nostalgia: vintage carriages, traditional station charm, and the warm welcome of volunteer staff who clearly love what they do. The journey itself runs from Aviemore through the Cairngorms to Broomhill, taking around 40 minutes each way. The scenery is breathtaking, with rolling Highland landscapes, riverside stretches along the Spey Valley, and charming glimpses of rural life. It’s a wonderfully relaxing way to enjoy the area. Accessibility is another strength. The station and trains are well equipped with ramps and wide access points, and staff are quick to assist anyone with mobility or sensory needs. Reviews from wheelchair users and families with blind or disabled relatives often praise the care and consideration they received. There are, however, a few cautions to bear in mind. Occasionally, the steam locomotive is unavailable, with a diesel engine used instead—something that can disappoint younger visitors expecting the full steam experience. At busier times, organisation can feel a little rushed, with long queues and a scramble for seats. Prices, while justifiable for a heritage experience, are on the higher side, so it’s best treated as a special day out. Overall, the Strathspey Railway from Aviemore Station is a charming and memorable way to experience both Highland scenery and railway nostalgia. The combination of heritage trains, warm service, it is a standout attraction in the region. Just be sure to book in advance, check whether steam will be running, and allow yourself to slow down and enjoy the journey.

Brilliant visit. Lovely walks around the site and you visit the horses, ponies and donkeys. The meet a pony session was very informative, and provided many a cuddle and head rub. I think the visitor center is quite new so if you are going because of the horses you might be a little disappointed, we only saw a couple and those were from a distance dispite doing both the red and blue walks. That said, it's got a wonderful cafe with some spectacular walks down to the river and through the forest and the staff were all very friendly.

We have driven past this place so many times over the years without realising what a gem of a place it is. We took the dogs for a walk and clapped the very friendly horses who run up to you as you walk by. They are so friendly you can’t help but love them all. We then went for a coffee and cake and it was great with very friendly staff who gave the dogs biscuits and water. Great views to sit and enjoy a cuppa. Loved our visit and thoroughly recommend a visit if passing.

We came for a family trip to Scotland for my father's 80th birthday, had the whole family with us. We wanted to do something fun that would provide enjoyment for all from their teens to their 80s. We found the Deeside Activity Park and decided upon rifle target shooting. Jack out instructor was amazing and made the event enjoyable for everyone. So enjoyable that we went back the next day for archery and go-karting, where Jack was able to get my 80 year old father on the track racing against his grandchildren, such great memories were made. Everyone was so accommodating and the experience was amazing. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Just did a 5k mud run here with my sister and a few friends, and OMG! amazing time, great experience, and a great chance to show off some skills! 😉 seriously just wanted to start all over again the moment I finished. Plus the shower facility for afterwards (coz you're gonna get messy if you do it right) is good...even if you can only shower one at a time.

My three boys had a great time at the go-karts. At first I thought it was a bit pricey but the boys absolutely loved it. You can't put a price on happy memories. A full hour, as many laps as you can do. Training from the staff was firm and fair. These go-karts are not toys and need to be respected. Each outing you can see the boys got faster and faster. We got good mobile phone footage that the boys love watching. I'd highly recommend the go-karting. The next day I got to spend a number of hours on their Loch fishing. I was given good training/instructions on how to fly fish, ,not fished since I was a boy. I didn't catch anything despite the water obviously teeming with fish. I really enjoyed my time there. Again, I'd highly recommend.

The park also features a Treetop Trail for wildlife viewing, a fire tower, maze, and various nature trails. It strikes the right balance between entertainment and education without feeling tacky.
This is an amazing and fun place to go, no hidden fees just fun for all ages, We had a family trip 7 adults and 6 kids age ranging from 3 til 12. The kids loved every part - play park, water slides, maze, shooting range, tree top nets, dinosaurs and the illusion. The adults had fun doing the tree top course and the sky dive. Everything was amazing. The one problem from our visit was it was swarming with wasps. They were everywhere. Would recommend for any age 👌

Fun and good with kids - won't hold the all day but half or a bit more. Queues at peak time can see you wait anywhere from 10 to over 30 minutes - especially for the main attractions (water slides...). While there are multiple things to see and do, we felt we were coming back to a couple mainly, trying to balance queues waiting time and value! Few fast food stands with the quality you would expect from this type of place - nothing gastro of course!

This was the first of many activities we booked before arriving to stay in Aviemore and what a great place to start off our holiday. Fun activities for kids and grown ups alike, I personally went out of my comfort zone and did the high ropes, having never done anything like that before it really tested me but so glad I did it, my daughter even did the skydive and showed great bravery

Landmark Forest Adventure Park is a fantastic day out for families! The panoramic views from the treetop tower are absolutely breathtaking, with sweeping forests and Highland mountains as far as the eye can see. The Cairngorms lookout point is both scenic and informative. Beautifully maintained, fun, and full of natural beauty. Highly recommended for all ages.

Our absolute must stop and honestly favorite highlight stop when we come to Scotland. It’s a smaller store but the owner Scott packs it with some fantastic scotch options and what makes this place a stand out is you can try higher end whiskies before you buy and with the wise help and direction from the patient, kind and knowledgeable Craig, you’ll walk out with some wonderful choices to get you thru until your next visit. You can also get gin and sample size bottles and there’s a nice little attached store next door for baked goods, sandwiches drinks and shopping goodies.

That was indeed the case and was quite happy with the tastings he offered and recommendations. Scott was quite knowledgeable about whiskey and was able to help guide us through since incredible selections. You are also able to buy whiskey online from his shop and send it anywhere in the world! The Glenlivet Distillery, established in 1824, is a renowned destination for whisky enthusiasts. Located in the picturesque Moray Speyside region of Scotland, it offers tours and tastings that provide insight into the distillation process and its rich history. Nestled in a remote glen with a dramatic past, the distillery captures the spirit of its surroundings in every bottle of whisky produced.
A truly stunning and modern distillery. The atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. Before our tour even began, we happily spent time by the crackling fireplace, enjoying the ambiance and the pre-tour anticipation. The tour guides knowledge of the distillery's history was impressive, and they delivered it with such charm and wit, weaving in fascinating anecdotes that brought the past to life. Their storytelling ability truly elevated the experience beyond a simple tour; it felt more like an engaging conversation with a passionate expert. Beyond the informative and entertaining tour itself, the location is simply breathtaking. The distillery's modern architecture is striking, and the surrounding area offers picturesque views. For those interested, a short walk away sits a magnificent castle – a perfect addition to a day already filled with history and charm. We spent some time exploring it before heading back to the distillery to enjoy a tasting of their incredible spirits. I highly recommend setting aside ample time to fully appreciate both the distillery and the castle.

We are not whisky drinkers, but we really enjoyed the tour at Glenlivet Distillery. It was a very interesting and informative tour, and we left with a deeper appreciation of the science and art behind a great single malt Scotch Whisky. Our tour was conducted by Amber, and she did a fantastic job in explaining all the details clearly. A special mention too for Emma, who kindly allowed us to join the tour even when we were late to arrive.

Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Speyside!

Wow, what a beautiful distillery and tasting room. We came in to the distillery while we were out hiking the Drumin Castle Circuit, which is the same hike as the George Smith Smugglers Trail, except for the starting point as the Smugglers Trail starts at the distillery. We had tastings, and my hen and I also had margaritas made with the Caribbean Reserve. Our tasting consisted of very generous pours of the Captain's Reserve, Caribbean Reserve and 15 years of age single malt scotch whisky. Honestly we were not too keen on any of them. I would say we may had needed to push on and try some more until we found the one to our liking, but we needed to finish our hike. If we had drank anymore I sure we would had crawled instead of walk the rest of the trail 😂 We did very much enjoyed the margaritas, but I think we will just keep using tequila instead of the Caribbean Reserve, as it cost £30 for a 70 cl bottle. We would like to thank the Glenlivet Estate and The Glenlivet Distillery staff for their wonderful hospitality as we had a grand time!

We had an amazing time at The Glenlivet Distillery, Ross was an outstanding guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and made the whole experience both educational and fun. The history, the behind-the-scenes look at the whisky-making process, and of course, the tasting, absolutely top-notch. If you're visiting Speyside, this tour is a must. Thanks, Ross!

Had an awesome time at The Glenlivet Distillery! The tour isn’t as pricey as some others, but it’s packed with history and fun facts about both the brand and Scotch whisky in general. You get to try three whiskies at the end — the 12, 14, and 16-year-old — which is a nice change from the usual 12, 15, and 18. They also give you a 10% discount voucher for any whisky purchase, and you can sample more before you buy. Great whisky, great value, and a really enjoyable.

Although we didn’t get to join the tour, we were totally impressed by the place! The bar was exceptionally nice, and the staff were so sweet and welcoming. We picked up a few souvenirs on our way out and hopefully, we’ll get to try the tour next time!

During my visit to Scotland I wanted to have a whiskey tasting experience and I was thrilled to see the Glenlivet distillery was couple ours away from the place I stayed as Glenlivet is one of my favorite whiskeys. The day I had booked I was running late and called them and asked can they accommodate me and my friends for a later tour. Even it was clearly said they would not be able to reschedule for later time, in the booking details, they told me they will try their best to include me in a later tour as I mentioned I was visiting all the way from New York. Now for the tour I should mention, Amber was really welcoming, knowledgeable and very pleasant the way she interact with guests. Thanks Amber. The Distillery itself sits in a nice estate with beautiful surroundings. Inside the building is modern with a nice waiting area a bar and a store. Although they could improve the variety of merch they have in the store, they have decent offerings.

Leith Hall Garden & Estate in Aberdeenshire is a 6-acre garden with extensive herbaceous borders and an unusual Chinese Moon Gate offering breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The historic hall is open to visitors, and the walled garden and walks around the estate are delightful. The property also features a small cafe with delicious food, warm scones, and welcoming staff.
Great place for a wee weekend walk! There is one pond walk, and one hilltop walk which can easily be done on the same day. They have activities for children every now and then, and many benches to take a break. Be aware of the warnings about algae in the pond! If Henrietta's Tearoom is open, please stay for the soup of the day and the quiche to recover from the walks! And as in any good place in Scotland, an assortment of sweet treats and coffee to finish your visit is available. Add this one to the list of places to come with family and friends to have fun!

Leith hall is a fantastic historical location brought to life by David our tour guide his knowledge and love of story telling was all inspiring and made our visit memorable ...the hall its self has a cozy homely feel to it and the rooms are bright and lofty due to the big windows and high ceiling this make the hall more inviting ...there is a military museum on the top floor which is an added bonus and well worth visiting after your tour as it adds more information about the leith hays that lived in the hall and became prominent military figures.... there is ample parking a cafe which sells cake the chocolate cake is superb and the cafe sells breakfast lunches ect along with all hot and cold drinks well worth a visit as the produce is top notch...there is a gift shop which stocks all the normal gifts and also toilets I highly recommend Leith hall as it scores 10/10 David help with this score as he made our visit one to remember

Well worth a visit. Excellent tour of the house by Emma revealing lots about the house and the fascinating family who lived in it. The Military Exhibition (post tour) is a must as well. The Walled Garden is stunning....despite Storm Floris!

Great morning at Leith Hall today. Had a tour with wonderful guide Tina, she was super knowledgeable and personable and made our time there really nice. Interesting history of the family and beautiful rooms to explore. Would highly recommend a visit. Beautiful well kept grounds and peaceful atmosphere. Go to Leith Hall people!

The tearoom is really good and uses produce from the garden to create some different but utterly delicious food. I had the chard and cheese quiche with a tasty salad and loved it. The courgette and lime cake which followed hardly touched the sides going down, it was excellent! Our waitress was great too 😀

Glenfiddich Distillery, located in the picturesque village that is an essential stop on Speyside's Malt Whisky Trail, offers traditional Victorian distillery tours. The area is not only renowned for its whisky but also for being home to one of the best salmon rivers. Visitors can explore the surrounding countryside with its vibrant colors and visit classic distilleries like Glenfiddich, Macallan, Aberlour, and Glenlivet.
I had a great time touring this rightfully famous distillery in Dufftown! The distillery is beautiful, sitting in a scenic valley, they just recently added a beautiful new still house. The tour is a great value: in 1h30 you get to learn about the history of this family distillery, visit the facility with a step-by-step of the whisky making process, and get to try 4 different drams, including a special edition. They take away kits for drivers, but I would recommend leaving the car home and coupling this visit with a ride on the Keith-Dufftown heritage railway for a full-day experience!

Beautiful & Legendary Distillery We decided to visit Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, as we were visiting the nearby Balvenie castle. We really enjoyed it and thought this place was great. It looks the part, a bit Victorian a bit Scottish, it is really nice & well maintained. I have know this Whisky my whole life, even living in Switzerland, somehow it was always in the bars, clubs I was going to. I imagined it would of been a larger and more industrial place. I was happy to see it was more normal, smaller, etc. This is somewhat in the heart of Speyside's whisky region do visit if you can! The tour (like most of them in Scotland explains the production and making process, of whisky. Really worth your time and highly recommended from us. Note they also have a great shop and bar.

Had my first-ever distillery tour at Glenfiddich! Our guide was hilarious! super engaging and very informative 😂 The place itself is absolutely stunning and filled with history. The whisky tasting was alright, but it was still really fun to learn the story behind the drinks. Such an interesting and memorable experience!

Our tour guide was super knowledgeable, friendly, always stopped to ask us if we had any questions, and took his time with us and didn’t rush things along. The tasting room was super nice, very exclusive feeling, and there were only a handful of us on the tour together, so it felt very personal. 100% recommend.
Will V — Google review
Unforgettable Tasting Experience The Glenfiddich 1990 and 1992 Sherry Oak casks are hands down the best whiskies I’ve ever tasted, truly exceptional! Deep, rich, and perfectly balanced. A standout moment in an already fantastic tasting.

We were passing the Glenfiddich Distillery when we met a very friendly security guard. He invited us to have a look around so we did. All the tours were booked up. We chatted with various people and visited the shop which was very busy. Next time we visit we might book a tour and that would give a better understanding of this very popular industry.
Allan M — Google review
Of course, Glenfiddich isn't exactly an insider tip. But the tour of the distillery is unparalleled—and we experienced many on our tour. Glenfiddich is one of the gold standards when it comes to Scottish whisky and shows that even a large distillery can impress with individuality and quality.

Nestled at the meeting point of Rivers Lour and Spey, Aberlour Distillery is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes with Ben Rinnes towering nearby. Visitors can enjoy relaxed tours to witness the whisky-making process and indulge in tutored tastings. The distillery offers a range of malts with rich velvety notes, and special tastings are available in the luxurious Fleming Rooms.
This was my first whisky tasting, so I can't make comparisons. I appreciated the information provided, and the instructor was great. I was pleased to taste a bit, and take the majority of the whiskey home in individual vials - which allowed me to safely drive. Unfortunately no tour was available. Coming from Canada, it was great to see the home of my favourite whisky !!

Even with construction, the visitor's center and tastings were available (July 2025). My two friends and I stopped in as Aberlour is one of our favorites. First, Allison is amazing. Her knowledge of current and older releases and the process to make each expression was impressive but her congeniality and communication were what sets this experience apart. She was friendly, funny, and responsive. The tasting room is small but beautiful and sufficient since there are no large tour groups finishing there.
Joshua W — Google review
Great tasting experience (Deconstructed Scotch Tasting). Distillery is undergoing massive reservations so no tours. Still, the tasting was a lot of fun with Allison, our tasting guide, taking us through a flight of five different Abelour scotches. All of them were incredible and 45 minutes wasn’t nearly enough time to cover everything (we went a tad over). Loved it so much, ended up purchasing a bottle of their award winning 18 year old Double Sherry Cask finished scotch. Definitely a great experience and more personable (to me) vs. nearby big distillery tours. Thanks Allison and Abelour!!

Yesterday I visited the Aberlour Distillery for a whisky tasting with two friends — and it was absolutely top-notch! Everything was so well organized and thoughtfully presented. What stood out the most was the incredible attention to detail in the storytelling — we were completely immersed in the history and craft behind each expression. The presentation was beautiful, full of character and small touches that made the experience feel truly special. A lovely surprise was the Walkers shortbread, a delicious and elegant little bonus that added a true taste of Scotland. Also appreciated the exclusive discount in their shop — a great opportunity to take home a bottle (or two!) at a better price. Highly recommended to any whisky lover or curious traveler in the area! We booked the Aberlour Uncovered experience. This was the more humble experience we had as was the only one of the eight distilleries we visited that did not include a visit to the facilities. They said that it is because of safety reasons. Despite that the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The Whisky selection was also great.

Logie Steading is a charming destination located near the picturesque River Findhorn. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely lunch or coffee at The Cafe at Logie Steading before or after taking a stroll along the river. The old courtyard houses a fine cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as an array of shops including a whisky shop, garden center, and bookshop offering new and secondhand books. Additionally, there are ample parking facilities and friendly staff to enhance the overall experience.
Really enjoyed doing this walk but must admit that it's not for the faint hearted!! The bridges you cross can be scary for people who are scared of heights. It is a lovely walk lots to see too. On the hill there is a derelict castle to see.

Logie is just incredibly calming. A haven in this crazy world. Highlights for me are the garden, which is beautiful, the walks along the river, and sitting outside in the courtyard on a sunny day just listening to the birds....with a cuppa and a delicious cake or scone! The cafe offers good quality food. Is isn't cheap, but everything I've had, has been lovely. I've seen the craft workshops change over the years and the selection is not as varied as it once was but it's still nice to drop by and see what's new. All in all, Logie Steading is a perfect place to spend a few hours. It's family owned and has seen 6 generations living there. It's obviously a cherished family home and I believe you can feel the family's love for the place in how beautiful it is maintained. Yes, it's a business too....but to me, that always feels secondary. I adore Logie Steading and visit whenever I'm in Moray. Well worth the short trip from the Moray coast.

Logie steading was a nice wee place, it has a lovely cafe with seating indoors and out, lovely shops with handmade goods, art, jewellery, clothing. There is also a small museum which was very interesting. There is plenty of parking and they even have parking in the shade if you have your dog in the car which I thought was good. Accessible for disabled people

What an incredible place where the walks offer serenity and a sense of adventure. The spacious café delights with delicious offerings, while the shops on site make you feel like a VIP. I loved the bookshop—massive and full of an amazing selection.

This is a great place to visit for walking, eating and shopping. We had a lovely walk along the River Findhorn to Randolph's Leap, with spectacular views. Afterwards we enjoyed a tasty lunch in the cafe. There is a fabulous bookshop here, where we spent quite a lot of time browsing through the secondhand books.

Visited this for the first tie wat a pleasant surprise. Vert neatly kept grounds and gardens. Good selection of retail outlets. Spent quite a while in the book shop. Cafe was busy with Good food. We bought a number of unusual plants. We then visited the beautiful gardens. Then it was back to plant centre to purchase more plants. Most are taken from cuttings from the main gardens. We highly recommend a visit here.

Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre

Factory Tours
Located in the heart of the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail, the Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre is a unique destination where visitors can witness the ancient craft of coopering. As the only working cooperage in the UK, it offers an interactive tour showcasing the art of crafting casks from American Oak. Visitors can observe skilled coopers at work and gain insight into this essential aspect of whiskey production.
The Speyside Cooperage offers a unique look behind the scenes of whisky cask-making. The tour starts with a short film and then takes you to a glass-walled gallery above the active workshop – a smart and safe way to experience the energy and detail of the work below. Most of the casks are reconditioned, not newly made – and it’s impressive to see how much is still done by hand: dismantling, repairing, testing. You don’t walk through the workshop, but the view from above gives you a full picture. The only part not visible directly is the charring process, shown via livestream – but everything else is clearly explained by the guide. A well-organised, one-hour tour that’s engaging and educational. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and curious about what makes whisky what it is.
Miriam O — Google review
We enjoyed learning about an aspect of the whisky process that we didn't learn about elsewhere, cask-making. They start with a short film, then a guide takes you up to a platform above the workshop where you can watch a bunch of workers actively inspecting and repairing casks. It was really fascinating to watch and learn from our guide. The charring process is shown via livestream. At the end there is a tasting of a whisky. I would definitely recommend this visit!
Gretchen O — Google review
Visiting the Speyside Cooperage was great! My wife and I liked seeing firsthand how the casks are made and repaired. It's downright crazy how fast and good the coopers are. If you love whisky and learning about how it's made, I think you'll enjoy this tour as casks are a fundamental component to determining how grain becomes the whisky we love to drink and share. Our only complaint was the tour didn't live up to it's name as we didn't get to see any barrels "toasted" or charred. We were both really looking forward to experiencing the process in person versus just in a video (which we didn't see either by the way) but apparently it isn't a for sure thing for each tour. If we knew this beforehand, we still would've done the tour but we wouldn't have been as disappointed or as surprised when we were told we wouldn't be seeing any casks "toasted" that day. Other than this, we thought it would've been great to meet a cooper in person and be able to ask them questions. All in all, a great tour and one we'd recommend taking.
David M — Google review
An outstanding and interesting place to visit, if you love whisky and cultural traditions especially ! The tour is very well laid out with an informative short movie to begin, then the extremely informative guide guides you along thei overlook balcony to share what all is happening down below in the work space. FABULOUS hour long tour, that ends with a wee nip, in a lovely part of Scotland!
Rucksack F — Google review
Amazing experience! Worth to visit! Process of making barrels can be more exciting than whiskey production (when you have seen so many) 😉
Dorota — Google review
Don’t really know if I should give three or four stars. It was amazing to see how the Coopers are restoring old barrels and how they refurbish them with such details. We even saw how two barrels were getting rejected the last minute prior to the pressure test because of some minor issue (assumption). Reason why I only give three stars is, that it was a lot of talking which is nice but I would love to see the steaming or the barrels as well as the charring. Would be awesome to see this in person and this is what I expected but maybe my expectations were a little too high. We “only” could see the apprenticeship guys which does an awesome job, no doubt about it but it would be even more impressive to see how new barrels are getting done as well as the whole entire process. Hence, I only can give three stars. Would I do it again? Not sure.
Hartmut L — Google review
Seeing and hearing about barrel making history was fascinating. Fabulous to see the processes at first hand. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend. 👍👍👍

Huntly Castle is a historic site located near the border of Aberdeenshire, boasting ruins dating back to the 12th century. Originally built by the Earl of Fife, it has undergone numerous modifications over time. The castle features impressive architecture including stately palaces and towering structures. Having served as a residence and stronghold for five centuries, it has endured multiple attacks and displays visible scars from its tumultuous past.
What a wonderful find! Huntly Castle is open in the off season, and offers free parking right next to the entrance. This is a really neat site. I loved that you could climb up to the top of the tower. Also has a very interesting history...

A car park big enough for over 6 vehicles. Short walk to entrance building with small shop selling gifts and treats. Entrance fee payable. The castle is big and an outhouse also exists to explore. The main castle has some restrictions to access and intricate details have been protected from the weather. Still an impressive size with prison, cellars, great hall, kitchen, bedrooms etc. Outside is a building with a bakery and a brew house. Part of the original medieval road exists just outside.
Joseph K — Google review
The castle ruins is incredible. The size is quite impressive, between the cellars, the prison, the living rooms and the different rooms you will spent 1h . All the explanations are really good, the story of it is fascinant. Highly recommanded.

Enjoyed a lovely family day out. Admission was reasonably priced. Walked around the ruins had inside and outdoor areas. Some pebbled areas, steps to climb and different levels to negotiate but not to much for the young children in the party aged between (3 and 6) Disabled access is limited to the surrounds as climbing stairs inside the towers may present difficulties. There was parking facilities outside and a nice park with play area and picnic area close to the river which was very picturesque.

this is a wonderful castle ruins and so definitely worth a visit...the site is home to a number of castles during its history ...a medieval road lays next to the current ruin as well ...Once a magnificent, sumptuous and ornate building, Huntly Castle is a large and ruinous old stronghold and palace in a pretty wooded location, long the seat of the powerful Gordon Earls and Marquises of Huntly and with a long and violent history, just north of the Aberdeenshire town of Huntly.

There is decent parking next to the castle so no issues there also toilets are avaliable. The views from on top of Huntly castle are well worth the effort. 10/10

Brodie Castle and Estate is a beautifully restored 16th-century castle that has been the ancestral home of the Brodie clan for over 400 years. The castle houses an impressive collection of antiques, art, and ceramics, including furniture, paintings, and works by Dutch masters and Scottish Colourists. Visitors can explore the castle's rooms, passageways, and towers to get a glimpse of everyday life for the Brodie clan.
Lovely stop during our trip to the Highlands. Our kids loved the large outdoor playground and the soft play next to the cafe. If you go during Spring, you will see one of the largest collections of daffodils in Scotland. We also got tickets to go in the castle for a guided tour, free as we are National Trust of Scotland members. Great woodland walk to the pond to see the swans too! See our full video review on our experience under The Olive Tree Family on all social media platforms.

We went here for the play gardens and found out there's a soft play for the really little ones. The play gardens are lovely and well kept as you would expect. We spent about an hour going round and having fun, though there wasn't as many activities as I'd been led to believe. However I was surprised to be told the cafe has a soft play (for children under 110cm in height). When we went in it's really aimed at under 5s I'd say. It was perfect for my little one. She enjoyed this more than the play gardens. I should add that wherever I read the info for the gardens made it out to be free. While you don't pay as such to get in, the amount you pay when parking depends on what area of the estate you are visiting. If you wish to visit the castle grounds (which includes the play gardens) it's £5 for the day (per car). Adding the castle costs a little extra. Note: it's free for those with National Trust memberships. I had no issues paying this, but it came a little unexpected and thought I should mention it here in case it was important to someone else. Something to mention is that the staff who we came into contact at various points were all very polite, friendly and welcoming and offered guidance and assistance where needed.

Nice tour, with very informative in person Tour guide. Castle grounds and gardens are very nice and well kept. Great place for photos. In spring it would be fantastic with a huge selection of Daffodils. We stayed in the Garden house for 5 days and was absolutely great. Super quiet well furnished historic 2 story house. Huge living room with private garden and full dining room. 2 upstairs bedrooms up a steep set of nicely carpeted steps. Full kitchen as well.

We visited Brodie Castle this Sunday and had an amazing time! It’s dog-friendly, which is a huge bonus — we were able to enjoy the day with our 10-year-old Lab. The gardens were truly inspirational. I especially loved the extended meadow areas and the large vegetable garden with an orchard. All of the play areas were well-kept, clean, and safe. There’s something for all ages — from 8 to 45! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Access to the gardens and play areas is free, and we only paid £5 for parking, which is a small price considering the number of attractions on offer. Highly recommended, especially in good weather! We’ll definitely be back!
Maria D — Google review
A lovely historic building that was brought to life as a former family home by the knowledge and enthusiasm of our charismatic tour guide. Good facilities including two small and reasonably priced cafés (lunch of soup, oatcakes, cake and pot of tea cost about £10.40). Lovely grounds to explore and a children's play garden that was clearly being enjoyed. I visited on an October week day and it was not busy, a pleasantly comfortable and unhurried 3-4 hour visit.
Paul B — Google review
We really like Brodie Castle. Our tour guide was new, but exceptional and she really added to our experience. The outside had some beautiful walking trails and we loved the huge beech tree. There were no formal gardens, but the children’s garden was so creative and really well done. If you have children, I’d highly recommend a stop here. The children’s garden was very well planned and the best we’d seen!

Visited the gardens and cafe . Staff all helpful and friendly. Two nice cafes with lovely cakes. spent a whole afternoon in the gardens and play parks. Children and adults enjoyed the play garden especially the musical areas. The big bunny was great to see. Children did the sheet to find the white rabbits and fill in the names, great idea to involve children. We didn't walk round all the areas so would certainly return.

If you have never been to a Scotish Castle I recommend Brodie Castle. Why? It is in the countryside away from traffic with plenty of parking. There is a very well organized tour with plenty of time to ask questions without feeling pressured. Several cafes are on the grounds with picnic tables to enjoy a lunch or snack. There is a playground for children. There are trails through the woods to follow . Clean bathrooms are on-site.

Glen Moray Distillery, located in Elgin, has a rich history dating back to 1831 when it was a brewery before transitioning to whisky production in the late 1800s. Situated on the banks of the River Lossie, this small and friendly distillery prides itself on using bourbon barrels for maturation, resulting in a delightful flavor profile. Despite changes over time, the dedication to quality remains unchanged.
We had a FABULOUS time at a tasting and in the cafe. Max was our server in the cafe and he was so helpful having us decide a whisky. They have a full menu for breakfast and lunch and very reasonable. Lots of freshly baked treats are available. They serve whisky as well! We did the tasting with Fiona and she was AMAZING. She was so informative, witty and fun. I learned so much and she was wonderful. She taught us some tricks for tasting and how to smell the different nuances in each whisky. It was wonderful. The gift shop is great as well. They have baseball hats, golf accessories, teapots, tiny bottles and shirts which aren’t available at all the shops. Of course they have whisky. It’s hard when you have to fly with weight etc and you want to bring something back for people. I would go back again in a heartbeat. Thank you for a memorable afternoon.

Super interesting tour and little tasting afterwards. Our tour guide Max did a great job and was always open for any questions. Enough time to take pictures of everything. Nice little option to take the samples from the tasting with you using the driver's package for free.

Nice whiskey tour experience! Felt very personal and also accommodating on person in our group that had a hard time to stand still or walk to much. If you are driving you can take the whisky with you in a small glad bottle. Overall interesting and good service!

Wonderful experience! It was fun to see the entire distillation process and our guide, Max, was very knowledgeable. The tasting was nice and we tried the food on site as well. Definitely worth checking out

This place has almost everything... Great tour. Lovely visitor center with a cafe and homemade food. Pleasant staff. But their scotch was the worst of the 16 distilleries we visited, in my opinion. I give them 4 stars because scotch is based on personal taste and I am sure there are many that enjoy this, just not me. Everything else about this distillery was lovely.

I had an amazing time on the Explorer Tour at Glen Moray. The guide Megan was fantastic – warm, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the distillery. She made the whole experience feel really welcoming and engaging. The tour itself was excellent. It was fascinating to see each stage of the whisky-making process, but the absolute highlight for me was the warehouse. There’s just something special about standing among the casks, soaking in the history and aroma – Megan brought it all to life with great stories and insight. The tasting at the end was generous and well-curated. I ended up buying a bottle from the Private Cask Collection – the Peated Fino – which absolutely blew me away. It’s a stunning dram and a great reminder of the day. If you’re visiting Speyside, Glen Moray is definitely worth a stop. The whole experience felt personal, unhurried, and genuinely memorable. Big thanks to Megan for making it such a great visit!

Glen Moray Distillery was a wonderful experience in the cute town of Elgin. The tour was very informative and gave us great insight into the process of making Scotch whisky. Afterwards, the cozy café was the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and relax. A must-visit if you’re in the area!

We took the Heritage Tour on 4th September with Amanda — what a treat! We learned an incredible amount about the world of whisky, both in general and specifically about how it’s made at Glen Moray. The tour ended with a generous tasting of four Glen Moray whiskies, which was a real highlight. Compared to the other distillery tours we did in Speyside, this one stood out for its depth of information, passion, and overall experience. It may have cost slightly more, but it was absolutely worth it. Thank you again, Amanda — we’d love to come back one day, maybe with friends or for a Halloween party at Glen Moray!

Elgin Cathedral

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Elgin Cathedral, a picturesque 13th-century ruin, boasts two intact towers and vaulted archways adorned with stone carvings. The cathedral has a tumultuous history, having endured fires, attacks, storms, and the Scottish Reformation. Despite this, it remains an enchanting site filled with medieval charm. Visitors can climb the West Front tower and the Chapter House tower to enjoy breathtaking views of Elgin and its surrounding landmarks.
Had a lovely couple of hours here. A surprising gem with much more to offer than initially meets the eye. Two accessible high towers with narrow spiral staircases are not for the faint hearted but absolutely worth the effort with excellent views from the top platform and multiple rooms with exhibitions on the way up. Some fantastic carved stone examples and lots of great photo opportunities. Staff were very helpful and happy to chat about the history. There is parking on the roads nearby which is free.

Very nice ruin. Well maintained. Very nice staff at main entrance who gave us a snippet of what to see and expect. Lovely view of Elgin from the top. The stairs up were well maintained, not too narrow, not a hard climb either. I do recommend. We used explorer pass to enter.

Signed up for annual Historic Scotland pass. Visited the cathedral while touring the Moray Firth area. Found the site to be well kept with loads of informative information on it's history. Staff were great and answered my questions. Recommend

remarkable abbey ruin ...would've been amazing to see in its day as what's left is looks pretty amazing ...lots carvings as well. . Even as a ruin, the cathedral shines out as one of Scotland's most ambitious and beautiful medieval buildings. Begun in 1224, Elgin was the principal church of the bishops of Moray. It lost its roof shortly after the Protestant Reformation of 1560, and later its central tower fell.

Beautiful place to visit. What a view from the top. Plenty of stairs, so be warned. Kids were engrossed in the history hunt, and we had to ask one of Historic Scotland reps to help us complete the last few.

We visited Elgin Cathedral today and absolutely loved our experience. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, and to our delight, we were even allowed to bring our dogs with us onto the beautiful grounds. That made the visit extra special and unforgettable for us. We are so grateful for this wonderful experience!

Hauntingly evocative ruins in stone. Curated exhibitions in the surviving snd partially restored towers add to appreciation of the time and place when Elgin was an active cathedral. The decorative stone sculptures are unique surviving treasures; some are whimsical and others are quite skillfully made. There is a nearby parking lot for easy access.

Well worth a visit! Good informative interior displays of mostly the "bits" that have fallen off and grand views of Elgin from the top of one of the towers. Friendly and helpful staff.

The WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre is an educational facility situated at the confluence of River Spey and the sea, offering wildlife enthusiasts a chance to witness local fauna up close through live web cams, film screenings and a collection of whale bones. Visitors can also take guided tours of the historic Icehouse and learn about Spey Bays fishing heritage. The admission to the centre is free, making it an affordable destination for families with kids.
Was a great day so had a great view and was fairly busy which is always a good sign. The sea is great, their are river walks and the cafe/shop was good, the sandwiches were tasty and of good quality. Parking available at the centre, and easy access to the river and sea front.

Good little cafe and exhibition. Easy access to the shingle banks. Guided tours of the ice house available. Great walk around the nature reserve too. Managed to see an osprey too as an added bonus.

This is a beautiful centre, with a lovely cafe, where you can learn, explore and see dolphins enjoying their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to enjoy other wildlife on our visit such as ospreys, lizards and kingfishers. The staff are incredible, they shared so much knowledge and insight with us. You must listen to the informative talk about bones and join the Ice House tour for a real insight into our history. James and Hope were exceptional. A must do and see if you are in the area!

We didn't see any Dolphins but they don't guarantee that you will. Lovely walk on the beach, it is all pebbles so thick soled shoes/boots are advisable. Food and hot drinks available in cafe. Small gift shop.

Really nice little cafe & Shop X the exhibition on the dolphins is full of useful information X lovely setting, and views X we were fortunate enough to be able to watch the Osprey hunting while we were there, he flew right over our heads & gave us both (separately) a 10/15 minute display x unfortunately didn't see any 🐬 dolphins but they hadn't been recorded for 2 days so clearly tides & winds weren't right X would recommend it to anyone x

Amazing place, amazing people, an absolutely amazing cause. Cafe is also excellent, very nice fresh food served with very little wait (as its all freshly prepared) they don't like waste and nor do we. Its also very very environmentally friendly both cafe and shop. Amazing products, supporting local artists as well as their own clothing which is all recycled 100% cotton, also supporting so many people with their citizen science programme. I can't say enough about how amazing this place is. Their is also a bird reserve just by as its at the mouth of the river Spey. Dolphins, porpoise seen nearly daily.

Cullen Beach, nestled between the charming towns of Cullen and Portknockie in Moray, is a true gem for beach lovers. This expansive stretch of golden sand offers stunning views from the surrounding cliffs and is perfect for swimming or snorkeling during warm summer days. At low tide, curious explorers can discover fascinating rock pools teeming with marine life.
What a fantastic beach to visit if you're touring Scotland. The view from the hill with all the old beach houses is very picturesque. The Cullen viaduct is easily visible as you take the walkway along the beach. The beach provides a long walk on golden sand. Free parking and we got something from the food truck which was handy. Some people were there providing watersports and selling some products.

Stunning beach with soft golden sand, dramatic cliffs, and views of the iconic Cullen viaduct. Perfect for a peaceful walk, family day out, or paddle in the sea. Clean and well-kept, with nearby toilets and cafés in the village. The rock formations and nearby Bow Fiddle Rock make it a great spot for photography and nature lovers. A true coastal gem in Moray!

Very small area by Quay side but very close to Cottage we rented. You could hear the sea cliff! The other end of beach was past the Sea Wall. Didn't sit on the beach even in sunny periods. It was a Bank Holiday and Cullen very quiet. Couple of families jumping off from harbour wall. Very nice peaceful place for rest and recovery

Lovley sandy beach with ample parking, toilets and a cafe. There are lots of rock pools at low tide to keep the kids busy and if you venture right to the north side of the beach there are a few caves to explore. The sea is lovley here probably the best beach we've visited so far.
Jay B — Google review
This is a lovely beach of fine soft sand. It is a decent length, and has a few interesting rocks protruding but they are few, the beach is near all sand. To get to it, turn off the A98 under the Viaduct, and then into the carpark. There are no marked spaces, it is a bit of a free-for-all, and it is not paved, so it's poor for wheelchair users or even poor walkers. A further problem is, on nice days the car park tends to be packed so getting parked can be a case of waiting and hoping you can grab a space when it becomes free before someone else does. There is a little shop there selling the usual beach type wares though to be honest, we didn't buy here, but we did get lovely ice creams from the ice cream shop in Portsoy before arriving at the beach. Would I recommend? The sand is beautiful and there is a shop and parking. But the parking seriously needs looking at! But for the kids it is worth a visit!

I have been going to Cullen for years my childhood of summers at Cullen, the beaches, the Harbour, the trail walks that surround Cullen and along the coast to Sandsend another beautiful beach, time your day right and you may catch seals on the rocks on a summers day or dolphin 🐬 splashing in the bay 😀 there are a few good hotels & B&B plus a caravan park set on a hill top with stunning views, the town is friendly and the shops have there own charm, I go back each year to remember the fun and fresh air and the magic Cullen has.
