Les Caves Bailly Lapierre

Mentioned on

Agricultural cooperative
Les Caves Bailly Lapierre is a fascinating destination for wine enthusiasts, offering tours and tastings in a 4-hectare cave that houses an impressive 4 million bottles. Originally a limestone quarry used to build Paris landmarks, the caves later served as a mushroom growing cellar before being transformed into a wine cave in 1972. The renowned Cre de Bourgogne, similar to Champagne, is produced and stored in these historic caves.
We did the super interesting guided tour, this place had a good audio guide and the guide spoke English and German besides French, so she could translate the more complex parts of the story. The tasting was nice and we returned the next day to try more and pick a box and a few bottles of wine to bring home. The cremant is delicious!
JanenAn D — Google review
The lady running the tours is very knowledgeable and friendly- you can also pick up an audio guide for explanations in other languages other than French. From Auxerre city centre you can cycle with the e-bikes (AuxR_M le vélo) to get here (there's no charging station nearby but seemed fine to park the bikes for a bit)
Max P — Google review
Worth a trip, absolutely. Take the guided tour for 8 euro. Includes 2 tasting glasses. Tours start at 3:30 and 4:30. More frequently in the weekend.
Floris N — Google review
Truly a great experience. 8 euro for a tour of the winery caves and a tasting! Everyone was so accommodating and the wines were delicious
Ian B — Google review
Made a detour en route home especially to top up on the amazing wine. Cycled up last year and only managed 6 bottles in the panniers. This time 3 boxes and a magnum 🤭
Tabby J — Google review
What an experience. Very very impressive, lovely and cool inside. Absolutely worth it!
Schalk B — Google review
Great tour, friendly staff, lot to discover. Amazing value for money.
Derernesto D — Google review
Really cool place to buy and drink some very good “crémant” made the Champagne way, can’t be called Champagne as it’s not made in the Champagne region. But nonetheless it’s as good as Champagne. They also have wines. Their bar area is so insolite and very nice, there’s no seating area. They sample their wines easily (rare in France to get free samples of any kinds). I was hesitating between 2 and the bartender/sales person offered for me to try them. And it’s not just a sip, it’s a full glass. The tour of the cellar is interesting, not too long and you learn some cool facts. The tour is 6€ / person and you get 2 glasses of crémant at the end and you also get to keep your glass as a souvenir. The personal at the bar/selling area is very nice and of good advice.

Pontigny Abbey

Abbey
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on the serene banks of the Serein, Pontigny Abbey is a historic Cistercian monastery located just north of Auxerre. The abbey's church, stretching an impressive 120 meters, stands as the largest Cistercian church in Europe. Now under the ownership of the Regional Council of Burgundy, it is maintained and animated by the Association of Les Amis de Pontigny.
Go to the café! It is extraordinary.
Megan M — Google review
I don't really understand all the positive reviews. The abbey building is a big and impressive space, but offers no clues to its history. There's a central area set up with seats, etc., in the style of a regular church but you can go and see one of those without paying €5. It doesn't help that while we visited some people were setting up lights for some kind of event. It's hard to embrace the grandeur when people are walking around with ladders. You can see into, and nothing more, the lay brothers area, but that's the only other building that's accessible. The gardens are basically grass and weeds, though the plan is to get them landscaped at some time in the future. Really, I don't see any point in visiting here.
Colin M — Google review
Nice place to visit and taking pictures.
Folkert J — Google review
This historical abbey has a strong gothic atmosphere. Beside the building there is small cemetery. The setting of trees in rows in front of it looks very beautiful especially when fall. I love this place to visit, so calm and very deep in historical, gothic atmosphere, looks a little spooky tho at night
Erniyati F — Google review
The abbey is beautiful, with a mix between gothic and middleage style. The light coming from the windows makes the atmosphere surreal. Well preserved

An incredible experience! Despite going alone, the staff made me feel completely at ease. From the moment I arrived, they were professional and supportive, ensuring I felt comfortable every step of the way. The instructors were knowledgeable and reassuring, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The jump itself was exhilarating, and I didn't encounter any issues throughout the process.

The best experience ever for being first time for me. The team at Paris Jump were awesome, very welcoming and helpful. The place is very serene and beautiful to do this first jump. Awesome awesome experience. I am so grateful to my Tandem man - Rachid. He was just perfect. Thank you!

Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure

Temporarily Closed
Historical landmark
Nature & Parks
The Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure are a must-visit, featuring vast underground chambers adorned with stunning stalactites and prehistoric rock paintings depicting mammoths and ibex. The knowledgeable guides offer dual-language tours, providing insights into the complex geology and ancient history of the site. Visitors can marvel at genuine cave paintings, including a touching child's handprint from thousands of years ago.
We had an amazing time at the Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure! Our guide, Gilles, was fantastic, funny—super knowledgeable, friendly, and did the whole tour in both French and English for our small group (which included some Australian visitors). We chose the 1.5-hour tour, which was the perfect length to keep things interesting without being too long—great for kids too! They even offer dog-sitting for just 5 euros. After the tour, there’s a beautiful walk along the river where you can explore smaller caves, and plenty of space to enjoy a picnic. Don’t forget to bring some cash to tip your guide—they really earn it! Highly recommend for families, and nature lovers
Suzanna K — Google review
So much more could be done with this place, like a booklet in other languages, surely not impossible in this day and age? Quite an enjoyable visit with my two great nieces from Australia, but they can not have been that impressed? A tea shop wouldn't go amiss either?
Christopher M — Google review
We went with 2 children 4 and 6. We did the hour tour. Had the best time. The guide really explained to the children and made them part of the tour. Tour was in French and English. Really recommend this. There is a small shop , icecreamas and drinks. Toilets are really clean. Lots of seating whilst waiting for our tour to start. Have already recommended this to other people where we are staying.
Jane R — Google review
Was a spontaneous visit for us on our way back from Fontainbleau to Germany. The tour was fun, informative and was even conducted in english for our international group. The cave paintings are very interesting and the guide very kind and eager to answer our questions. The caverns are vast, and there's lots to see in the 1 hour tour. The gift store was also very nice, with cheap ammonites, crystals and cool trinkets. One is not allowed to post photos.
Akash N — Google review
Highly recommended tour to explore the caves. Tour is about 1h30 and good for kids 7 and up. Would not recommend for younger kids. Don't forget to bring a sweater as it is cold inside (12 degrees celcius/53 degrees fahrenheit)!
Julien J — Google review
This cave is so raw and natural it's great! Very well preserved and open. Guide mainly french but some English words also. Also 30.000year old prehistoric mammoth paintings inside. Pretty amazing. 15 degrees inside on a 37 degree day, so dress warm enough 👍
Venture V — Google review
An impressive large cave with many stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and 30000 year old cave art

La Ferme de la Fosse Dionne

Mentioned on

Bed & breakfast
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
La Ferme de la Fosse Dionne is a former farmhouse B&B offering simple rooms and suites with stone walls and timber beams, along with two lounges. The site is home to the Fosse Dionne, a natural spring that gushes around 200 liters of water per second and holds historical significance dating back to the Celts.
Had a great one night stay, room was generous and warm, well appointed with ensuite bathroom. Hosts were lovely and patient (as my partner and I both speak English). Great location next to the spring.
Meaghan S — Google review
Amazing little jewel in the town. Nice story and very well preserved. No charge, no organisation, just a place to wander and wonder. Access is difficult to impossible in a wheelchair. That's a shame but since nobody is making money from the site, it's unlikely to change. Well worth a visit if you're able to walk the distance. The colours in/of the water is something to enjoy.
Jamie M — Google review
Our host was wonderful. She served us a wonderful breakfast! The location for the hotel is good. Only 15 minute walk from the train station. And right across from the Fosse Dionne. It was also right below St Peter's church. Our room was large and spacious, as was the bathroom.
Tim P — Google review
Deep underwater cave, very clean and see-through water, but to be honest nothing special above that. Stop if it's on the way, but not worth a direct visit
Jerzy T — Google review
We were surprised to find that this old farmhouse is in a town surrounded by houses. Whilst the publicity says there is free parking it is not stated that this is in a public parking space. The glass door on the street has a piece of paper stuck to it instructing people to go to the side- we finally realised that the entry is through a gate. This was in no way what we expected and we did not feel it was safe leave a loaded car in an area strewn with rubbish. I saw the room allocated to us which was clean and well appointed, however the environment was so unlike the description that we decided we could not stay. The place has changed hands and it could be that it will improve but we felt foolish to have been guided by the reviews.
Sara B — Google review
Amazing hosts. Amazing little place. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere. I can't even begin to describe how lovely, generous and heartwarming the owners of this place are. Recommend to ALL if you're visiting Tonnerre. I would come back to this place again and again!
Kate A — Google review
A very interesting natural spring to visit with a lot of history, and a beautiful church at the top of the hill with great views of the surrounding area.
Dylan C — Google review
This is a beautiful little stop on any tour of Tonnerre. There isn't any signage to tell you that the Fosse is driven by the infiltration of precipitation on the plateau as well as drainage from at least one river. The Fosse Dionne is remarkable because of its outflow (reportedly at least 100 litres per second on average). (Wikipedia).

You'll constantly be amazed; you simply can't get enough of it. And the locals are gems, so friendly, open, and helpful. A big shout-out to the tourist office, which was exceptionally helpful. Recommended places to stay: La Maison des Corporations, drinks at Chez Mimi, and dinner at Rouge et Blanc. (Original) Je kan niet anders dan verliefd worden op dit pittoreske dorpje. Aanraders om te verblijven : la Maison des corporations, drinken Chez Mimi en eten bij Rouge et Blanc.

(Translated by Google) The village of Noyers-sur-Serein is a charming village, located in a meander of the Serein. It is a medieval village surrounded by ramparts classified among the "most beautiful villages in France". It is a timeless village with very beautiful half-timbered houses of Burgundian architecture, either modest half-timbered houses or beautiful Renaissance residences in sculpted stone. Everything is very harmonious and provides a very typical atmosphere. In the main streets, there are various shops, bars and restaurants, artisans and art galleries, monuments including the magnificent Notre-Dame church, in short, plenty to walk around and spend your time. Noyers is a tourist village, but even in July when we passed there, the village was not flooded with tourists. We had a very pleasant stopover there, an afternoon walk, accommodation in a very nice B&B and dinner in a very nice restaurant. There is a way to stay longer to visit the region, but we were just stopping off. It made us want to come back. A village to discover.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lavish 16th-century palace with gilded, mural-filled apartments overlooking ornamental gardens.
This chateau is always a hit with visiting guests from out of country. Numerous rooms have been restored and contribute to the beauty of the chateau and its storied past. The gardens provide an enjoyable walk, whether you stay close to the chateau or wander out to the folly. The staff are friendly and helpful. The chateau can accommodate group tours in English; otherwise there is a written guide to help you along as you tour.
Tracy B — Google review
Nice example of a french chateau. Decent guides offered (paper or audio - in french and English). Dressing up clothes for the kids were pretty fun, and they got to wear them all around the chateau inside. Well worth the visit. Grounds outside were also nice, though worth knowing that they don't allow picnics in the grounds.
Christopher L — Google review
This is a privately owned Chateau that has been for 100's of years. The latest owners with the help of the Local Government have restored alot but they desperately need a new roof. You can see in some of the rooms that water is coming through and affecting the rooms beneath. Such a shame. You can only visit the first floor. The rooms are very intricate and pretty with some seriously pretty floors. Parquet and tiled which are in very good condition at the moment. We managed to capture a QR code at the entrance which allowed us to listen to an audio guide which was excellent and allowed us to appreciate the history. Really enjoyable and we spent 2 hours inside and the time flew by.

Lac des Settons is a stunning lake nestled among fir trees and larches, offering a serene escape at an altitude of nearly 600 meters. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as wild swimming, forest runs, cycling, and water sports. Accommodation options range from shepherd huts to camping or chalets. The area is relatively quiet during weekdays but can get busier on weekends and French holidays.
Did a 16km mountain bike around the lake; the terrain wasn't difficult so we really enjoyed ride and the views of the lake from different points.

Fabulous lake for kids to paddle in, stand up paddle board, etc. Dogs are allowed. We went to the beach at the green shed (cabin verte) to the south of the lake. There's an aquapark with paddle boards to hire. A restaurant practically on the beach and a snack shack actually on the beach. Weather was perfect, but we'll still be back if it's not.
Graham M — Google review
The lake is very calm. Even in high season there are hardly any people here. You can enjoy swimming in privacy. The entrance to the water is really very gradual.
Blanka C — Google review
It’s a beautiful lake with a nice 14km long hiking trails around it. We spent time around Lac des Settons and really enjoyed it. The lake is large, it was very quiet when we were visiting , and surrounded by forest, easy paths to walk with kids, and plenty of places to sit and watch the water. It is a great place for a day trip We would definitely come back but next time in summer.
Alireza F — Google review
Beautiful place to visit! It was raining when we were there and there were hardly no people. There are plenty of things to do around the lake, or in the lake and plenty activities for children. There are some restaurants around the lake. Everything was very calm and nice.
Foteini P — Google review
Beautiful place we went to the plage tranquille and found a nice spot where we could swim with our dog. There are lots of boats and watersports on the lake but it is still a beautiful spot.
Helen C — Google review
A nice lake. You can walk around it, by the road or by trail. Approximately 14 km.
Bianca K — Google review
Discovered this wonderful place by accident. Wild swimming, forest runs and glorious cycling. Easy accommodation choices from shepherds huts, camping or chalets. We were here during the week in August and it was very quiet in the morning, getting busier in the afternoons. Sunday was manic until 7pm. Apparently though outside of French holidays you have the perfect retreat venue.

Musée François Pompon

Cool
DeB B — Google review
Nice little museum, but mostly with studies of his work. It is worth even so.
Dora S — Google review
(Translated by Google) A few of Pompon's works are on display in the tiny municipal museum. Poor lighting, no museography, large "lines" on the display cases (??? see photos). The glass is untreated, so it has a mirror effect and is full of reflections, of you and other visitors, of the room, of the barely veiled windows. I don't regret going there, but I recommend the Musée d'Orsay instead. A world-renowned national museum, the resources implemented are obviously far superior to those of the small Saulieu museum, and it is the place that brings together the most Pompon sculptures. For Saulieu, one has the impression that they had difficulty filling their display cases; there is a bit of everything and anything. We go from Pompon to the local cook without really understanding why. Or they should have called it "the museum of old local glories," that would have been more accurate. On the other hand, the Saulieu Museum has no facilities: there are no public toilets; I didn't see them anywhere, and they aren't signposted either. But also, the museum is completely inaccessible to people with reduced mobility: there are flights of steps everywhere, and even two large staircases. A shame for a museum with some pretensions.

(Translated by Google) This museum is absolutely essential. One could almost say that the collection of original works by François Pompon rivals that of the Musée d'Orsay and other major museums, at least in terms of the number of works by François Pompon on display. But this museum doesn't just showcase the animal creations of the sculptor born in Saulieu; the collections also include local heritage (Gallo-Roman stelae, sacred art, works by Bernard Loiseau, etc.) and other animal sculptors who sometimes exhibited in the town's streets and left traces of their presence here.

Fontenay Abbey

Mentioned on
3 lists
Abbey
Nature & Parks
The Fontenay Abbey, established in 1118 by St. Bernard and considered to be the best-preserved of all Cistercian abbeys, still thrives today with its historic buildings and beautifully landscaped gardens. It is a testament to the ancient Christian faith that was once practiced within its walls for nearly 900 years.
A magical church surrounded by beautiful mountains and rivers, with a carefully maintained garden where over 100 kinds of herbs are grown. These are used for medicinal purposes. The owner lives on the property, which includes private land. In the small stream, vibrant blue butterflies can be seen. In the past, bread was baked and wine was made here.
Ayumi — Google review
It was the most beautiful place I visited in France, my favourite from the trip. It's a bit sad that the different rooms are not decorated, they have no furniture and are mostly empty inside, but all the buildings looks beautiful outside. The gardens are also great. Among all the destroyed and half reconstructed abbeysz, Fontenay stands out for its marvelous looks.
B P — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to the Fontenay Abbey. We basically had the entire place to ourselves. The paper guide was provided in English and was all we needed to understand all the different buildings and gardens. The church was amazing in its simplicity and the attached monks quarters were well preserved. The forge was a highlight with various re-creations of the water hammer first developed and used here. The gift shop was also nice. Parking was free and easy to access. Well worth the detour to see this wonderful historic site.

Fabulous abbey (the building or buildings occupied by a community of monks or nuns) consisting of different buildings, gardens, and channels. It claims to be the place where the industrial revolution started, and shows several industrial inventions. Very beautiful flower collection.

Fontenay Abbey is a must-see if you're in that part of Burgundy. The abbey provides a self-guided tour in English that provides good information about the numerous buildings on-site. The long, rich history of the abbey is very interesting and the property is beautiful. The gift shop has a lot to offer, especially books on the region.

The main attraction in this museum is a beautiful large bronze vase, which was a burial gift for the so-called Lady of Vix . The lady must have been a princess of one of the Celtic tribes that lived in this area at the end of the first Iron Age, around 500 BCE. The other galleries have collections about the Gallo Roman times until present day and near the entrance is a section on natural history. There was a wall full of woodprint blocks, which was interesting.
Seimen B — Google review
An amazing place. Superb.
Conal H — Google review
Very helpful and kind staff. I went to the museum specifically for the lady of vix burial goods. A little disappointed by the exhibit, it’s clear that the exhibit is still a work in progress. There was very little informative texts, especially at the start of the exhibit. The museum also displays the remains of the lady. The issue of displaying human remains is contentious at best, but even if it wasn’t I dont feel that the museum did it appropriately. The fact that the museum shows a reconstruction of her burial chamber just in front of the case containing her remains really emphasise the disrespect it is to have her lying on the floor, in the dirt.

Archaeological museum
MuséoParc Alésia is a museum and historical site that offers an immersive experience into the Battle of Alesia, where Julius Caesar's legions defeated the Gallic tribes. The museum features re-enactments, replica war engines, and multimedia presentations that bring to life the history of Alesia from the Bronze Age to the present day.
Excellent modern historical discovery centre telling the story of Caesar's conquest of Gaul, culminating with the Battle of Alesia. Cafe/Restaurant on site and a range of interactive exhibits that brings the history alive. Highly recommended.
Jack G — Google review
Beautiful museum with interesting exhibition The building is beautiful and makes the vist worthwhile. The 'wood' on top of the museum and the views all around are great. The exhibition is made interesting for young children as well in different ways. Especcially the small lego displays. Brilliant. It would have been even better if the campement outside of the museum could not just be looked at, but that one can actually go in there. In this respect it would also be nice to have more buildings from that long time ago rebuilt on the outside terrain which is very large. Parking is very easy and for free. The restaurant was closed when we were there, but on the outside of the museum there was a picknick place where one can get delicious sandwiches, french fries, something to drink. All very reasonably priced and fresh and with nice service. But no obligation to buy anything, you can eat what you bring along as well. The website says a visit can take up to 3 hours which we found a bit too much. All in all worth the trip and a good price-quality relationship.
Monika — Google review
I'm a Latin Teacher in the US. Wanted to visit this museum since it opened. 2 hours from Paris. We paid more for the fast train to get here in one hour. Stayed 2 hours for self tour inside and out. Took a taxi from Montbard to MuséoParc =35€. Fun day for a Latin Teacher and her husband who loves history. A great place for kids!
Martha P — Google review
Very interesting place to visit while en route. Well curated displays with clear explanation of the siege of Alésia. Explanations in English and German as well as French.
Phil A — Google review
When you want to know everything about the Battle of Alesia, when the legions of Julius Ceasar in 52 BCE defeated the Gallic tribes once and for all, this is the place to be. The building in which the museum is housed is in itself worth seeing. On the first level are the expositions with information in French, English and German. At the start is a silly video presentation, but further on you can watch a good one about the Battle of Alesia. On the top floor, you can go outside and watch the surrounding area and a remake of a Roman castrum or army camp. Inside the camp you can try your hand on Roman sports. When you come by bicycle you can park that about 100m from the entrance
Seimen B — Google review
Great place to visit. Well thought out museum that gives a very good insight into the Roman occupation of Gaul and the battle of Alésia. The displays are very informative. Don't miss the reconstructed fortifications outside the museum. The museum boasts a small restaurant where you can have a spot of lunch. There is an information package for teachers.

Château de Bussy-Rabutin

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Lush gardens extend from this moat-encircled mansion set in a wooded valley, plus guided tours.
Home of Count Bussy-Rabutin, soldier, writer and ladies man at the court of Louis XIV until banished to the heart of Burgundy after being caught being a very, very naughty boy. Beautifully preserved, with a very good presentation of the history of the family and the chateau itself. Interactive displays and plenty of explanatory signs in multiple languages, backed up by friendly and knowledgeable staff. This is a "must-see" for visitors to the Dijon/Montbard/Chatillon area. Keep your tickets from Abbaye Fontenay or Alesia and get a discount on entry. Recommended to allow at least 3 hours to fully enjoy all the rooms, paintings and gardens. There's even a maze. Limited refreshments on site or nearby so bring a picnic!

Under some restoration works, the Chateau is still an interesting sight to visit if in the Burgundy region. The entrance fee is reasonable and includes a Guide. On Sunday, 26 June the afternoon the tour was guided by a young enthusiastic and knowledgeable fellow. Unfortunately, did not have the time to get his name. The visit was very interesting with an insight of the owner of the castle, customs, and people of the epoch. It will be a most to come back to see the whole castle restored to its past glory. The garden is not than expansive but is well kept and a great addition.

Saint-Lazare Cathedral, located in Autun, France, is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture and a significant historical site. Dedicated to Saint Lazarus, the 12th-century cathedral features Gothic stone spires adorned with intricate Romanesque sculptures and carvings. The church holds relics of Saint Lazarus and was once a major pilgrimage destination for those en route to Santiago de Compostela.
An impressive cathedral showcasing a seamless blend of late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. The style is remarkably uniform, with a beautifully restored and captivating main portal. A true ‘must-see’ in this tranquil city, which also features Roman remnants like a theater, city gates, and ancient walls.

Théâtre Romain, also known as the Roman Theater, is a well-preserved ancient site in Autun, France. Dating back to the 1st century AD, it was one of the largest theaters in Roman Gaul with a capacity for 17,000 spectators. The theater offers visitors a glimpse into history and is well-maintained yet left in its natural state. It overlooks a picturesque lake and is just a short walk from the cathedral.

Château de Châteauneuf

Sights & Landmarks
Arrived on a Saturday to find entrance free, otherwise still a bargain at 6 Euros. Has had recent sympathetic restoration with well presented information in several languages. Most of the chateau is open to visitors. The views exceptional and the surrounding village very pretty. Streets are narrow so not suitable for larger vehicles. Parking is free and there are a few nice looking restaurants/ cafes to eat.
Richard V — Google review
A painfully over-restored castle. The newly restored right tower is not a sight to behold. Inside, however, many interesting details are still visible. Also of interest is the building's vertical open section, which reveals the medieval structure.
Michael K — Google review
I loved this castle! It is well-restored and has an interesting history. It's wild to imagine walking on floor tiles that have been in use for maybe 900 years! There is just enough decor and information to give you a sense of the castle over the centuries... It feels a bit like a treasure hunt, following along with the story of the former inhabitants and the renovation process. Don't miss the lower level with the story of the renovations. The video at the end almost made me cry. Keep an eye on time because they do kick you out for their lunch break! The medieval garden was so well-tended, we loved all the happy herb plants with their corresponding labels. I also loved the colorful tiles in the bathroom. It's amazing how the visitors center was designed so as to be essentially invisible when approaching the castle. We also really enjoyed the saunter through the town to get to the castle. What a charming place! It's a great value for the price of admission... We paid 6 Euros and we were there for almost two hours. Would have stayed longer!

This is a very well maintained beautiful small château that has an audio self guided tour as well as regular tours (check with chateauneuf team for hours and languages). The small village where the château is located is a very quaint village with beautiful stone houses and quite a variety of small restaurants where you can havevlunch, dinner or just an apéritif or a coffee break. Checked some of the menus andcthe prices were quite reasonable . . Definitely recommended !
Thanos O — Google review
It is not expensive to visit, which is fair as a lot of the castle is not available to see. There are a lot of videos to watch about the renovation work which are quite interesting. There were a couple of primary school classes visiting when we went, so it was often difficult to see anything. It's not somewhere I would take the smaller grandchildren as it's quite bland and a lot of reading to do to understand it. Parking in the very pretty village and toilets near the gift shop.
Karen P — Google review
Went with the family during our holiday. Kids (4 & 7yrs) loved it. Free entrance for kids, adults was not so expensive. (6eur p.p) (The souvenir shop itself was quite expensive) Keep in mind that between 12.30-14.00 visiting is closed. We spended ~1 hr in the château and also ~1hr in the village. Lots of art to be found, some restaurants but no grocery shopping.

Castle
Chateau de Savigny-les-Beaune, a historic castle dating back to 1340, is now home to an impressive array of museums dedicated to various types of vehicles. Visitors can explore collections of warplanes, vintage fire trucks, antique motorbikes, Abarth racing cars, model aircraft, and high-clearance tractors. The chateau's park features an authentic squadron of fighter planes and Abarth racing cars.
Wow, wow and a double wow. This place is an absolute goldmine. I could spend hours here! The collection is absolutely incredible! For motorcycle/car/airplane enthusiasts, you NEED to stop here. The entrance ticket was very reasonable (I think you can charge more though, honestly and it would still be worth every penny).
Rob R — Google review
What a remarkable collection of machines. I particularly liked the Abarth car collection. The motorcycles were numerous most makes I’d never heard of. All of them are for sale if you have a barn big enough to accommodate them. There are agricultural machines, fire fighting vehicles and most impressive the aircraft. Not restored but left to weather and decay. So many that you can view close up.
Alan H — Google review
Well, they do offer free parking on-site, so that's a plus. The place seems a bit neglected and dirty, but don't let that stop you from visiting. As I'm a USAF retired fighter aircraft mechanic, I visited just to see the aircraft. Sadly, you're not allowed to actually walk around them. You're only allowed to walk in front of them on a gravel pathway. Still worth a visit. The motorcycle museum was over the top impressive. Clearly this is their main focus. There is nothing special about going inside other than to see the motorcycle collection. On our vacation, we used this stop as a time filler along the driving route to Paris. About an hour away from Paris.

Amazing place to visit, especially for those who like cars, planes, and all things similar! Definitely worth checking out the grounds and walking among the exhibits. They also offer wine tasting on the grounds

It looks like some mad persons collected everything they could find and packed it into an old castle. Cars, fighter planes, fire trucks, bikes..... Sounds crazy but we loved it. You have to see it.

Exceptional castle with a great collection of Abarth cars, bikes and airplanes. Truly unique experience.

Had an amazing time here, great collection of cars and planes, something you not see very often. Really worth for money.

Stunning landscape even though during winter. The castle itself is well preserved with beautiful decoration. The vineyard surely gorgeous during summer time, but for now they are sleeping. The cars and motorcycles collection are crazy. They also have millions models of car, plane and service vehicles. The aircraft was packed in this place as well. You must visit if you are an aviation lover.

If you're a wine enthusiast, La Cave de l'Ange Gardien is an essential stop on your journey through Burgundy. This cozy and inviting wine cellar provides an exceptional tasting experience featuring some of the region's finest wines, including rare and aged varieties. The passionate staff are eager to share their extensive knowledge about the rich history of winemaking in Burgundy while guiding you through a delightful selection of wines.
Tasting with Nicole was one of the highlights of our trip to Beaune. Her passion for subjective tasting is infectious — “label drinkers” are not high on her list — and I now feel one step closer to trusting my own sensory perceptions of wine. Nicole and Pierre are true ambassadors for all Burgundy wines, not just the Grand Crus. I highly recommend scheduling a tasting here; you won’t regret it.

Pierre is the consummate host. He took almost 2 hours and let us taste some beautiful wines. We will definitely be back
Nick L — Google review
The best wine tasting experience of our lives!! Pierre was so passionate and knowledgeable - he really took his time is explaining everything to us about how to distinguish differences between wines. We tasted more than 10 bottles in a tasting that lasted nearly 3 hours - best investment we could have made! And the wines were simply fantastic! Thank you so much for this experience!
Jessica T — Google review
This was the most in depth and educational wine tasting I've ever been on, lasting a couple hours. I am infinitely more knowledgeable about French wine, especially Burgundian wines, as a result. The tasting walks you through many different types of wine, including a sparkling and a creme de cassis in the end. It was all done in good humor with fun stories from our host Pierre. If you can get a reservation during your time in Burgundy, I would definitely recommend doing it.
Nicholas K — Google review
Fantastic food. Creative and tasty. Simply choose from the daily menu(we had the lamb) limited seating so you must have a reservation as many people were turned away. We felt the service was average at best however the wine list was expensive and future many local superb choices
Mike A — Google review
Great! We are always looking for a place where we can taste local wines and learn about the region. This is the place! The 3+ hour dégustation with Pierre is just what we were looking for. Learned a lot about the region, tried a variety of wines (4 whites, 4 reds, 1 crèment, 1 apéritif), and met great people. There is a 15€ fee per person. For the time, expertise, and delight of the experience, it’s so worth it! We have been traveling all over France and this is exactly what we hoped we could find in so many towns, but haven’t. What a delight!
Lauren T — Google review
Great wine testing experience. The owners are friendly and share their knowledge with passion. We learnt a lot and hopefully will be less ignorant next time we order some wine :). Definitely recommend going to their cave. Their homemade cassis liquor and Cremant is also priceless.
Gabriel ( — Google review
Extremely friendly service with an extensive tasting of various levels of Burgundy wines and a detailed explanation of each wine. Five whites, five reds, a sparkling Burgundy, and finally a kir royale (Champagne flavored with a fruit liqueur) made with creme de cassis. It takes a couple hours but is entertaining and informative, well worth the time. Make a reservation due to the length of the tasting, and they try to group customers by language.

Nestled in the heart of Beaune, "Patriarche Père et Fils" stands as a testament to centuries of winemaking tradition. This expansive wine house, established in a 16th-century convent and operating since 1780, invites visitors to embark on self-guided tours through its labyrinthine underground caves. Here, you can explore an impressive collection of Burgundy's finest wines at your own pace.
This was hands down the absolute best vin degustation we have ever attended. Strongly recommend the privilege tour, but I truly believe that our guide, Murielle, was what made this experience exceptional. The tour of Les Caves was incredible. The wine was incredible as well. Add this to your list of “must do” wine tours while in Burgundy!
Amberleigh O — Google review
Self guided tour and tasting for 25 euros. Fantastic cellars, well laid out with informative video stations. For the tasting of 6 wines at the end Leane was professional and knowledgeable. We bought quite a few wines so maybe think about giving part of the initial fee back?
Beverly D — Google review
I regret our decision to visit this winery. While the cellars are interesting given their length, they are not worth seeing for the price. There is no proper greeting or personal guide, a small amount of audio/video in a few spots, no explanation or opportunity to ask questions. A big sales pitch at the end to purchase their expensive wines. Not at all worth the price.
Andrea G — Google review
We did the self-guided tour. It was very informative and the cellar was impressive. We also had a tasting at the end of 3 white and 3 red wines. We would definitely recommend this tour.
J F — Google review
Malika was one of the best wine tasting ambassadors we have ever had. We were in the regular tour and she recognized that we were interested in 1er Crus. 15 bottles of tasting later we placed our order for 24 bottles of outstanding bottles. What a great experience! We will visit her every time we are in Beaune!
John D — Google review
We did not enjoy this tour. It was raining, and they didn't even open the doors to let people in. There is little information on a self-tour, and the wine was the smallest amount I have seen in a tasting! It's all about trying to sell their wine. The cellars are large, but not to the standard of other tours.
Martyn L — Google review
This was a very nice chateau. The self guided tour was actually very pleasant. I love old cellars and seeing dusty bottles of goodness is really cool. The self paced tasting was pretty incredible. There were attendants if you had questions, but they let you "taste" as much as you wanted. A little dangerous for Americans but we kept it classy...mostly. We did talk to a sommelier about wine and ended up doing a private tasting with some very cool Irish folks. The wines were waaaaaayyyy out of our price league, but it was an awesome experience. We did buy a pricey bottle for our 1 year old to open on her 21st. She better enjoy it! Overall this place is classy, nice, ancient, and not too stuffy. Highly recommend it for the value.
Thomas C — Google review
We had an absolutely perfect time here. The tour is very interesting as the cellars are just enormous. The highlight, for us, was the tasting at the end. We had an almost hour long conversation, tasted some great wine, explored all their options, and couldn't have asked for more. Worth a visit.

The Hôtel-Dieu Museum, also known as the Hospices de Beaune, is a remarkable medieval hospice turned museum that showcases local art and furnishings from the Middle Ages. Built in the 15th century to aid the poor and sick, this historic monument features stunning varnished tile roofs and serves as a museum of medical history.
The free audio guide really brought all of the amazing history of the Hotel - Dieu to life. Architecturally stunning and historically impressive. We loved every minute of our visit. (The audio guide also has a children's option so don't hesitate to ask!) We reserved our spot easily online and walked right in.

Really loved the audio guide that gave great information but was entertaining the way it is done. Took us about an hour and a half to go through and a great picture of the non wine history in Beaune. Especially liked the pharmacie room and the presentation of every day life in those times.

This was definitely the highlight of our visit in Beaune. The building used to be a hospital for poor people and is now very well restored. Entrance fee is Euro 12 - you can book online or pay at the spot. The roof and the building itself are very beautiful but they cannot be seen from outside. You need to purchase a ticket. I am glad we did.

Truly beautiful: the roof, courtyard, musuem displays, the numerous works of art. Very well curated, easy to understand the history and acts of charity carried out here. The Last Judgement altarpiece is a true masterpiece and is not to be missed, very powerful Practically had the place to ourselves after 6

Great place to learn about how medicine was practices since the 15th century. Well restored and well presented. Their audio guide is an excellent teaching and learning tool, especially the “if you would like to learn more” green button.

Step back in time of old style hospital. Magnificent building with a tiled roof you can see best from inside the large courtyard. Well worth the entry fee. Booklet or headphones self audio tour are included with ticket price.

Working for a Hospice charity, I enjoyed seeing the granddad of Hospices in Beaune. This town was caring for the vulnerable from before my country was even discovered. Amazing tour and worth the ticket price to enter.
James J — Google review
A must have seen in Beaune. Yes the roof is great. But for me the history of the very old hospital and its foundation fascinates me more. You get an audioguide, which I highly recommand. The tour is about 1 to 1,5 hours. A lot old hospital furnitures and equipment. Entrance was 12€, which is ok for such an historic place!

Boutique Wine Market is a shop that specializes in French wines and offers tastings as well as cellar tours. Located in the basement of an ancient church, this wood-beamed store provides visitors with the opportunity to try and purchase local wines. It is a great place to pick up all your favorite wines from wineries and vineyards you have visited.
Excellent place to have a wine tasting, where you can also taste top wines. We were helped by M. Laurent Corneillat whom has an excellent knowledge of wines and the area. Top service.
Lydia D — Google review
We had a wonderful experience with their guided tasting tour. My husband and I paid for the tasting, while our son accompanied us without participating, as he’s not into wine. The group size was limited to 10 people, but it ended up being just the three of us. Our guide spoke excellent English and shared his deep local wine expertise throughout the tour. We tasted four red wines, including a Grand Cru valued at around USD 295 per bottle (based on my later research), and three white wines featuring two premium crus. We were very impressed with the wine selection and overall tasting experience. The next day, when we dined at a local Michelin-starred restaurant, the sommelier recommended a red from the same winery as the first red we tasted (Marsannay 2021, approximately USD 64 per bottle market value or $85 in a Lyon restaurant ) to pair with our meal, which included both fish and chicken. Pinot Noir from Burgundy is well-structured and far more sophisticated than many Napa counterparts, which I find somewhat overpriced. The flavor profiles vary greatly depending on the winery and vintage. The Chardonnay also stood out, especially when served at the proper temperature. We particularly enjoyed the Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Champlots 2022 Blanc from Domaine Gilles Bouton et Fils (Vivino rating 4.0). Its floral and fruity notes of peach, apricot, and lemon, combined with a buttery hint and balanced acidity, made it exceptionally refreshing on an early summer day. We purchased a bottle and savored it back at our hotel. The wine glasses we used during tasting became a store souvenir. It’s a pity that both red and white Burgundy wines are quite delicate and don’t travel well in summer heat. Nevertheless, this historical church-turned-boutique wine market is a true gem. I highly recommend this guided tasting experience, especially for visitors from outside Europe. Good value with pleasant surprises.

Our group of 4 did a private wine tasting with Andréa and it was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable and took his time in taking us through each wine and helping us to appreciate their special qualities. Would highly recommend this experience.

Absolutely loved our experience at Boutique Wine Market! The self-paced wine tasting through the cellar was fantastic for our small group of 3. Tasting 8 wines, including 3 premier cru, was a highlight, and the massive maps added depth to the experience. In just one hour, we learned so much and enjoyed every moment. A big shoutout to the team for their incredible wine knowledge and hospitality. Highly recommend this gem for any wine enthusiast!
Sue C — Google review
We took a 7 glasses wine tour in the store which has a great ambiance. The only downside of the tour was the wine itself. Even the more expensive and possibly better wines were not to the liking of a group of 6 persons. The fact that it was unanimously off was odd. Especially considering the price.
Ewoud H — Google review
Our small group of 4 really enjoyed this wine tasting experience to go at your own pace through the cellar. We tasted 8 wines that included 3 premier cru and learned a lot from this experience and massive maps- overall a great 1 hour wine tasting for our small group! Nestled on the exterior of the stunning Eglise Notre-Dame in Dijon, the Owl of Dijon (La Chouette de Dijon) is a charming stone sculpture that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This small yet significant owl is not just an artistic feature; it’s believed to grant wishes when gently stroked, making it a must-visit for those seeking a bit of magic during their travels.
Cute little owl on the side of the cathedral. So many ppl touched it... you can't really see the owl anymore. Follow the golden plaque arrows around the city to find it

A modern old town, just follow the golden arrows for sightseeing. The shops are neat and orderly. I saw people slipping after the rain because the floor is slippery. It is recommended to wear shoes a good shoes. There is a restaurant that supports Down syndrome. I recommend you try it.

Palm-sized and polished by countless hands, the little owl carved into Notre-Dame’s wall turns a side lane into a ritual. Touch with your left hand and make a wish; the brass pavement plate with the owl logo marks the stop and small arrows carry you along Dijon’s Parcours de la Chouette. This is the route’s namesake and most photographed moment: modest stone, big civic idea. I like how the trail knits small details to major landmarks - marker, brief engagement, onward wayfinding - so one carving speaks to grander sites across the old town.

Beautiful museum! Spacious with beautiful displays of paintings, sculptures, and archeological artifacts, located in the historical section of Dijon. I spent three hours here and did not see everything, of course time spent depends on your interest. The staff was very friendly, the cost was free! (Thank you!) Museum hours were wonderful, open until 6:30! Highly recommend!

The rooms are beautiful. Lots of classic old works, a few modern works, so not very impressive for me. Admission is free, so it's worth seeing the architecture. Beware, there's a trap on the first floor, you'll never get out without asking... we weren't the only ones. Fortunately, the lovely security staff are there to help.

A free art museum! It was a treat, of course. I'm not an expert, but I think their collection was very good, based mostly on the Duc's collection. Don't miss the Duc and Duchess's tombs! Everything was in french and it wasn't very crowded, even on a Saturday and even with people fleeing from the rain, like we were.
Erika H — Google review
The Best Things in Life Are Free Well, that’s certainly true for the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. I first discovered it a few years ago while tracking works by Vieira da Silva and Nicolas de Staël—and since then, it has become an almost obligatory stop on the way to or back from the South. Just three hours from Luxembourg, and each visit brings something new. This time, a megalomaniac Chinese painter exhibited right in front of the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy—a juxtaposition as unexpected as it is striking. And if you’re traveling with children, don’t miss the fantastical animals of Pompon. A place where history, discovery, and wonder are all free of charge.

The Dijon Museum of Fine Arts is well organised and an example of a must see museum outside of Paris, London, etc. There's everything from beautifully curated medieval art to sculpture to art and photography of the 1900s and 2000s. Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux

Abbey
Sights & Landmarks
Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux is a historic monastery with modern additions, including a cheese-making operation that produces the renowned Citeaux cheese. Visiting the abbey offers an immersive experience in both religious and French historical significance, with knowledgeable guides providing interactive tours. The hospice provides a perfect setting to accompany monastic life, offering new facilities and delicious food at reasonable prices.
I read a few poor reviews for the abbey. What is apparent to me is that these individuals did not do their homework in advance. The tours are conducted entirely in French, but complete translations are provided in an easy to follow binder. Advanced reservations are highly recommended as the tour size is limited and only offered at 10, 2, and 4. This is an active monastery of Trappist monks and as such there is no “behind the curtain” tour of their life and activities. It is true that only a few of the original buildings survive due to the chaotic history of wars and revolutions. However, the tour does an excellent job of presenting the history of the Cistercians and the monastery. If you are interested in the history of monasticism, then a visit to Citeaux is worth it. Otherwise, don’t waste your time and save your poor reviews for yourself.

An hour and a half of dry historic lecture. You see in 3 buildings where they have reconstructed scenes badly. There is really nothing original left there. I thought we at least would get to see the cheese being made but no. Sold in shop but no tasters. Do not take kids they would be so bored. Could have read all they said in a history book.
Philippa B — Google review
what a disappointment! we would NOT recommend it (abbaye de Fontenay yes!) - no original buildings on site, not one. - you visit 4 rooms, that's it (and not even originl buildings, sorry to insist) - no garden to visit, there is just a plain field next to it - visit only with a guide, which means you either have to book in advance or check the times - you dont get to see the cheese factory either - and if you were hoping for a bit of cheese tasting at the shop.... well you're not at the right place.
