Balian Beach is a hidden gem located in the western part of Bali, away from the bustling tourist areas. Unlike other beaches on the island, Balian Beach features picturesque volcanic ash instead of white sand. It's a popular spot for surfing and yoga, offering a serene escape from the city. The beach is surrounded by food vendors and offers an 'alternative resort' experience focused on relaxation and experiencing the authentic Bali.
Super peaceful and pretty beach, not swamped with tourists and people! The black sand was gorgeous and it sparkles in real life! A few cafes and shops are nearby for you to sip on drink and relax! There are huge waves and sometimes can spot people surfing or paragliding too! So cool!!! Highly recommended to visit this beach if you're around Lalanlinggah area~
Adeline A — Google review
If you want escape Canggu to see beautiful beach, this one is 10/10. It’s not very suitable for swimming - it’s more for surfers, but it was amazing. Definitely worth travel for it.
Filip P — Google review
Great waves for surfing & very peaceful. Yet the rubbish let it down, so surfing here was less desirable out amongst the rubbish. Had to wear shoes on the beach due to amount of rubbish. Lots of dogs, but they kept to themselves.
Nicole T — Google review
Nice relaxed place.Good surf. From the road coming in to Balian you can go left to the Pitaya Hotel and many smalls warungs. If you take le right turn you go down to Gajah Mina Resort and Secret bay Restaurant.Good sea food. reasonnable priced. A beautiful nature walk on top of the cliff. For nature lovers..
Seaweed C — Google review
The black sand feels nice on your feet. If you don’t surf, there is nothing for you to do here, the sea water is grey and very rough. Not very good spot for swimming. But the black sandy beach looks truly amazing and it feels so soft. As on every beach on bali, plastic beaches are a hype, unfortunately this one as well.
Kjoffy — Google review
Beautiful and calm place. We took surf lesson & that was amazing! Enjoyed our honeymoon's first days here and would highly recommend to stay at! Waves are too high for swimming but good for surfing & you can also enjoy the beautiful and very calm beaches by walking
Saana A — Google review
This beach was quiet with small crowds. The water was clear and great for walking. Some parts have soft charcoal colored/black sand, while other parts have rocks. Collected a lot of small seashells. Every morning, surfers were out surfing. A few stray dogs waiting for anyone to feed them. Some trash but not as bad as other beaches in Bali. Enjoyed this beach more than the populated beaches in Bali too.
Alex — Google review
Amazing surfing beach. I drove my scooter from Canggu to Balian and it was amazing once I got closer to the beach. But it was super sketchy and overall do not recommend driving a scooter on the main roads that far. I got to these rice terraces very close to the beach which was a beautiful surprise. Once I got to the beach you can have some coffee and watch the surf. After my surf there’s a great pool you can chill at for the day, just pay I think 100k. Highly recommend this spot if you wanna surf and chill

Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Brahmavihara-Arama, also known as Banjar Buddhist temples, is the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali. Nestled in the hills of the village of Banjar, it offers peaceful gardens, meditation rooms, and libraries for visitors to explore. This serene sanctuary provides a change of pace from the Balinese Hindu temples and is surrounded by lush jungle, offering a tranquil atmosphere for contemplation and relaxation. The temple complex features various levels and spaces for meditation and quiet reflection.
You don’t have to be Buddhist to appreciate the tranquility and beauty of this place. It's a Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, it’s not only a spiritual site but also a place of natural beauty and calm. Perfect for anyone who wants to take a break from the noise of daily life. We have to dress properly here because it is still an active place of worship and spiritual practice. So please respect and don't make too much noises.
Christy M — Google review
This location is an absolute gem tucked into the hills of Bali. The grounds are stunning, meticulously kept, and radiate a sense of serenity that hits you the moment you arrive. The staff were warm and welcoming, adding to the calm, inviting atmosphere. What stood out most was how peaceful it felt. There were very few tourists, and those who were there moved quietly and respectfully, making the experience feel authentic rather than crowded. The temple provided not only incredible photo opportunities but also the rare chance to slow down and truly absorb the local culture. A must-visit for anyone seeking beauty, stillness, and a genuine cultural connection.
Sean D — Google review
Great place to visit. Little gem in the hills. A great place to visit — a little gem tucked away in the hills. The temple and surrounding grounds are beautiful and well worth the trip. Entry was 35k per person, which felt fair for the experience. If you're feeling adventurous and confident on a motorbike or scooter, consider taking the countryside road from here to the Twin Lakes. Just be cautious: the road is quite narrow, and at one point the asphalt gives way to concrete tracks designed for single wheels. It’s manageable, but definitely not for beginners.
Marek D — Google review
Visiting this magical Buddhist monastery again 5 years after doing a 7 day silent retreat here! The setting and views are simply spectacular. This is a very special and spiritual place, not commercial at all and they have kept the entrance very reasonable at 35k including a sarong they lend you. You can meditate in the quiet and cool dharma halls or stroll the grounds and admire the beauty of the place. Highly recommend a visit and its a short 20 minute ride from Lovina. Enjoy and may you be happy 😊
Ryan R — Google review
Wonderful beautiful place. Very peaceful and large territory. Later some turist group came, so we had to wait in some places to take pictures. Everything is so clean, safe and sound. Very magnetic place, great energy.
Giedre P — Google review
Came here around 17:00 on a week day and we were the only 2 guests alongside with another couple. The temple is large — expect at least 1 hour to explore it all in tranquillity. The gardens are kept beautifully. The place is quiet and invites visitors to really enjoy the tranquillity. Inspiring how the architecture combines Balinese and Buddhist style, reflecting local culture and traditional Buddhist symbols. Entrance is 35k for international visitors.
Francesca — Google review
Brahmavihara is a gem & wonderfull place, very well maintained, serene, and peaceful. It's not too crowded, making it a perfect spot to unwind. Definitely worth a visit!
Ferdynand E — Google review
Must visit when in North of Bali. Beautifull and large site. Very peacefull and not so crowded. You can spend about 1 hour over here. Good to know: you can take a grab to the site, but if you want to return...grab isnt available at that adres. Best to make an appointment with your driver for an pickup time....otherwise you have to walk quite a long time.

Love this place. My go to place whenever I’m visiting up north. A little touristy, but the hot spring are worth the trip & great to sooth the body & relax.
Miss G — Google review
So peaceful! Tho it actually smells like Sulphur Sulphur but it is worth it. It has crowd though, but one thing I did not like though we had to purchase tickets for like 45000/p there was another parking fees which was supposed to be a donation! The man who was incharge asked us for 5000 and when we said no it’s based on donations you! He started saying! “Yeah yeah go away don’t pay anything” as if I have made a blunder by not paying him money! Tho i had given him a 1000 rupiah
Ankit N — Google review
The hot springs were nice, but the water wasn’t really hot. You have to pay extra fees for the spa or jacuzzi, and even for lockers (10,000 IDR). Still, the place had changing rooms and showers, we enjoyed it overall, and next time we’ll just bring shampoo!
Aurore S — Google review
Three pools with mineral infused water. One is the hottest and most crowded, the biggest one not too hot. Medium to medium high sulphur. More of a warm spring than a hot spring. Changing room was dirty and smelling bad. We decided to go back and change in the car and — I think it was the right call. Crowded with lots of tourist but no one disrespectful or anything on our visit. Some good bargains on knick knacks from the vendors as you walk up. My wife enjoys bargaining as it’s part of her culture and she got stuff for cheaper than back home. Small fee to park and use locker. They should close once a week for a deep cleaning, even half a day, would make it a five star experience
Ben V — Google review
Nice water, it smells somewhat like swimming in an egg salad but you quickly get used to it. Three pools, I couldn't tell the difference between them in temperature, but one of them has water spouts which can do you a satisfactory massage if you get the angles right as they fall from a large height. I didn't use the restaurant or massage services so can't comment. Lockers cost 10k and toilets 3k, cash only. Cheap entrance ticket (45k for bule) so worth it on that basis. I spent about two hours there. Watch out for the entrance - there are about 20 gifts shops so it you want to shop go for it, but otherwise expect to be hassled. You might be able to get a grab moped but I couldn't get a grab car from this location, so book a driver in advance unless you want to be ripped off by the taxis outside.
Sam M — Google review
A paradise on earth. This hot spring in the middle of the jungle is a paradise on earth. We had a great rest and my children loved it.
Sofiane H — Google review
After paying for entry I was told to ride up to motorcycle parking, where I was told I needed to make a donation for parking (that’s fine and expected in Bali) I didn’t like the harassment from the market holders to purchase things before entry to tie hot springs, I don’t mind if walking around Bali, but after paying to enter an attraction it was very unwelcoming. (They have everything you need for sale in the pools btw, I got stung 50,000 for a towel because i read they weren’t supplied) The hot springs themselves were a mixture of warmish/hot water in the top pool and lukewarm water in the larger pool. The pool itself felt quite dirty and underwhelming, I didn’t spend long here as I was turned off by how slimy the pool was. I went early and avoided the crowds, but after an hour it was quite busy so I had a drink and left.
Jamie B — Google review
Relaxing and nice hot spring, you can smell the sulphur on the water. There are changing rooms at the facility. I will advice you to bring your own towels if your don’t want to buy one at the way in. There are 3 pools to enjoy and if you go early in the day you can avoid big crowds. Overall is worth visiting. Enjoy !!

I realy loved the walk. You can ask, touch, smell and learn so much more about the fruit and ricefields. We were guided by the son and his friend of Putu. Such a friendly guy's. And I could ask anything. What.they don't know they surch on Google :-) I had a great time. There was taken care for water and a little snack. After the walk we had a great lunch, cooked by Rita. That was amazing! Specially the pulled chicken with lemongrass. Never had that before and not seeing it elswhere. It was so good!! I felt like I know a piece of Bali more now and that makes me happy. So a realy worthy trip🙏🏼😊
Jiske W — Google review
I have done the walk with Putu many times now as have many happy guests of @villatunjung in Rangdu. It is not just a walk through the sawa's and some rainforest or fruit plantation. It's an experience as Putu seems to know everything about flora and fauna and the role of nature in every day's life of local people and religion. By great storytelling also! Not only is the walk with Putu an absolute joy, don't skip the superb lunch cooked by Ria! Best lunch in North Bali! You'll get 2 great experiences in one day for the price of one! Easy 5 stars and I won't hesitate to recommend this experience. Book and Go!
Ruud S — Google review
The cultural walk with Putu was a very unique and informative experience. He explained a lot about agriculture, plants and culture. The food cooked by Ria was delicious! Thank you very much, Ria and Putu! Warm regards Sophia and Johanna

Simply the best experience you will ever have in Bali! Putu and Ria are exceptional hosts who offer you a unique experience. Putu's Tour is absolutely incredible! Not only is the scenery and landscape exceptionally beautiful but Putu also provides you with insight into Balinese culture. I learned more about Bali on this tour than anything else I have done in Bali. It is truly the most authentic experience you will have and you will come to truly appreciate how special Bali, its people and culture are! It gives you a true appreciation of the connection between nature and culture. Ria's cooking is amazing! To be able to spend time with this wonderful family is a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed! I highly recommend this experience to all. Surfing West Bali - Medewi Surf Lesson offers an incredible experience for surfers of all levels. With its warm waters and perfect waves, Bali has been a top destination for surfers worldwide for nearly 50 years. Kuta beach is particularly popular among beginners due to its shifting sandbanks and currents, making it an ideal training ground. Soep and Ricky are highly recommended instructors with over 30 years of experience, providing assurance and professional coaching to newbies.
We took a few lessons with Sup and it was really good. Sup can explain the most important things very easy way. We stood up already during the first lesson and it gave us the motivation to continue 🤩 thank you 🙏
Mája T — Google review
Surfing with Sup helped me get the most out of a brief trip to Medewi. Sup's advice on what time to surf based on the tides, where to paddle out, where to sit in the lineup, and where to take off on each wave helped me catch much better waves than I otherwise would have! We were also able to hire boards for surfing on our own afterwards. There was a decent selection of boards available to choose from, and you can get a great breakfast afterwards at the Holy Tree!
Josh W — Google review
First surf lesson ever here with Bagus! What a nice moment, everything here is made to make you feel safe and confortable inside and outside the water. Don’t think twice and go for it ! Thank you again my friend !
Hugo L — Google review
I had some lessons with Sup, he is the best. Sup has a lot of knowledge, knows Medewi and we are always in the right spot with him. It was the first time I was able to enjoy surf and get some improvement. He also explains where to position for the wave and tells you how and why that I found really important. The best in town, I totally recommend it. Also offer driver service 5 stars. If I come back for sure I will go with Sup again.
João M — Google review
Sup is a great surf guide in Medewi! I’ve had great surf sessions with him. I was very amazed by how many waves I surfed!! I’m an intermediate beginner and Sup made me feel very safe and was supportive. He is very kind and easy going. I wish I could do more sessions with him as I felt like I was improving my skills. I would definitely recommend surfing with him. Thanks Sup!!
Yoga M — Google review
I had a really great experience with Sup in Medewi. Easy going and reliable, Sup is a great teacher that helps you feel confident in the waves. He always ensures your safety and is respectful of how you feel and adapts to your level. I highly recommend him if you want to enjoy your time in Medewi and improve your technique. Thanks Sup and hope to see you soon in the waves 🌊

I booked surf lessons with Soep for three of us during our stay at West Bali. I told Soep we are completely new to surfing; also, my husband and I are in our fifties and were not sure if we could do the sport. Soep gave me a lot of assurance, he even looped in his friend Ricky to coach with him together. We had a good time and were very happy to have started a new sport. Time seemed to have passed so fast! I can truely say Soep and Ricky were cool, professional, and were very attentive to newbies like us. For those who want to learn surfing in a tranquil atmosphere, go look for Soep and Ricky in West Bali !

Biorock Pemuteran in Bali is a captivating underwater site for snorkeling and photography. The area features a 300-meter stretch of biorock formations, including casts of deities and bikes that have become vibrant habitats for marine life. These structures can be explored at various depths, making it an exciting experience for snorkelers.
A fantastic organization doing very necessary work, very effectively at this location specifically. It’s amazing and inspiring to see, but unfortunate it is needed. The information Centre is great as provides details around their process in terms of chemistry which was very informative. A massive shoutout to their team for almost immediately assisting me when I got out the water [I had just been snorkeling by myself, not with them or anything] with a bleeding stomach from a graze on the shallow coral. They quickly disinfected it with alcohol and treated it. Very grateful for this, no questions asked, just helped, and said bye, no payment or anything expected, pure kindness, so a purchase of their T shirt felt obligatory as thanks for all the work.

I go every day when I'm in pemuteran. Fabulous place. Well done to the creators and management. It's a fun safe place for the snorkelling community and for scuba training. Many small fish species sometimes a turtle nearby and great coral growing. I feed the fish and they swarm to me. Great to swim with nature. I have many videos I can't post... German and Austrian ladies I said hi too diving from the house pontoon. I couldn't get photos or videos to them
J S — Google review
Pretty good! I don't like messing about with the natural environment, but they've got fish and coral using the structures, and it provides an interesting place to view sea life. Very easy swim from shore. The platform had a broken ladder, making it inaccessible to all but the more agile and strong… there didn't seem to be any urgency to fix it, and more than one person was seen injuring themselves trying to get on.
Andrew H — Google review
Nice spot, small coral, some small fish, nice view of growing coral, easy access from the beach. a few people in the water, not too busy.
Eh M — Google review
Always a pleasure to stay at this homestay. Large, clean rooms with a/c, spotless bathrooms, most with queen beds but some that can separate into 2 twins. Good breakfast variety included, and there's a small swimming pool. Very nice staff who're adept in English. And integrated with it is a dive shop... And you can snorkel or scuba out to see the coral plantings of the Biorock experiment.
Lenard M — Google review
This project is great for coral recreation and interesting for snorkeling. You can find the statue of Garuda 12 meters deep, to the right of the floating house
Алексей — Google review
This organisation is doing brilliant work helping to rejuvenate the coral through clever design, we saw turtles, thousands of beautiful fish and bright healthy coral just a stones throw from the beach. It's really worth donating to help these guys continue the great work they've been doing.
Fiona W — Google review
Very nice for snorkeling and not far from the shore. Enter at the flag for a safe entry for you and the corals. (There is also a sign written) I'm not a diver but for me it was really nice and many different fish including a pufferfish one day.

When you want to snorkel or dive this is a beautiful place to visit. Just book a tour and have a nice experience. And when you are lucky you may see a sea turtle beside the coral 🪸 where you find real colorful fish.

Loving every corner of this Island! You could see the view of Mount Raung and Mount Ijen from here. There are also deers living in this Island as Menjangan means Deer. I think the fish here also friendly 😆 there is a group of small fish (10-12 fish) circling me around like more than 10 times when I was snorkeling. They literally followed me until I get back into my boat. The minus is around the Sri Ganesha Temple there are a few of trash. Please do take an action.

Part of West Bali National Park. On the land, you can find many Menjangans (kind of deers), that is endemic animal of Menjangan Island & West Bali area. We are phohibited to touch and feed them since they are still wild animals and those actions can change their habit and behaviours. Under the water, we can explore beautiful yet healthy corals & see many of sea creatures from sea fans, eels, and macro creatures like nudibranchs, etc.

Nature & Parks
Baluran National Park is a protected landscape in Indonesia that boasts of mountains, savannas and a diverse range of wildlife. Dubbed as the 'little Africa' of Indonesia, this park is a must-visit destination when in Banyuwangi. Visitors can explore the beautiful African Savannah-like terrain on foot or by car rental. The park also features stunning beaches where visitors can relax and unwind while enjoying the fresh sea breeze.
Baluran National Park is often called the “Africa van Java,” this place blew me away with its unique savanna landscape, diverse wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere. The Bekol Savanna offers stunning views. I saw deer, wild buffalo, and even a few monkeys roaming freely. If you're lucky, you might spot a Javan leopard! The trip to Bama Beach at the edge of the park is also worth it. Quiet, calm waters and mangroves make it a great place to relax or explore nature trails. If you're a nature lover or photographer, Baluran is a must-visit. Peaceful, wild, and beautiful ✨
Rishell H — Google review
The highlight of the park is the wide Bekol Savannah, where visitors can spot deer, peacocks, water buffaloes, and if lucky, even the endangered Javan leopard or banteng (wild cattle). The scenery, especially during sunrise and sunset, feels almost like being on a safari in Africa. Another must-visit spot is Bama Beach, a quiet coastal area inside the park with clear waters and mangrove forests. It’s perfect for relaxing after exploring the savannah, and snorkeling here reveals vibrant coral reefs and marine life.

My wish list has been fulfilled. Finally, I can visit Baluran National Park. A National Park like in Africa. To enter the national park, you have to report and pay for a ticket. Payment is cashless, so prepare your gadgets. There are several tourist stopping spots for taking pictures. 1. At the acacia tree, 2. in the NP animal skull area, 3. Bekol Savanna with Mount Baluran in the background, 4. Bama Beach. It is best to come to Baluran National Park in the morning or afternoon. The animals usually come out to look for food. In the afternoon, you can also see the sunset. If you visit the NP, please always comply with the applicable rules. Prepare sunscreen and personal protective equipment from the heat of the sun. It was a pleasure to come here. Hopefully, I can come here again

One of hidden gem in Java. Located at the Situbondo - Banyuwangi border (but the entire are in Situbondo). This place is also known as "Africa van Java". You could found some wild animal like bulls and monkeys (be careful with your belonging because sometimes the monkeys could steal it). It's better to come here in the summer or dry season (in the rainy season the savanna would be greener, but still looks good😁). I came here with a motorbike so we could see the very beautiful view😍

Great place to healing. Get lost for a while ( karena vibes ga kyk di indonesia , pun ga ada signal provider apapun once nyampe di savana ) Coming here on monday at 10.00 AM , not too crowded but it’s surprisingly hot 🥵 Great experience!

Second time visiting this national park. It wasnt so busy on my first visit in 2018, but now, there are a lot of jeep tours, also due to many rain this year, the savanna is not used to be, it’s greeny and a bit wet now. But when sun is setting down, we saw groups of deer gathering in the middle of savanna, also monkeys and even Javanese Bull! It was truly an Indonesian safari experience! We stopped by on the beach side and had a local food; soto rujak, it was delicious! So if you want to visit, i recommend to visit just before the sunset to see all animals moving around the park.
Pritha R — Google review
Baluran is a great park for wildlife watching or birding with many beautiful landscapes. I do a lot of wildlife watching and photography around the world, and I thought overall this park is top notch, it might just require a little more effort and careful timing if wildlife is your goal. I visited for 4 days in early Oct 2025. I stayed near the park and drove a rented scooter in every day. Here are some things the park is great for, and some drawbacks: Landscapes: There is a good diversity of landscapes within the park, on the drive in, you see a lot of tropical dry forest with some wetter/greener forests deeper within the park. There is also the very dry and open savannah region and a lot of mangroves and forest near the beach. There is really just one road through the park to the beach, and not much opportunity for hiking, so if your primary focus is seeing the landscape, you could see everything in one day. Wildlife: You can see lots of green peacocks, wild buffalo, deer, langur monkeys, wild pigs and hornbills (near Bama beach), but timing matters a lot. If you are interested in seeing wildlife, you should either go by yourself, like I did, or do a tour that visits the park in the evening. I spent all day in the park, and I can tell you that if you are on a tour that goes through the park any time from 9AM-3PM, you aren't going to see much in terms of wildlife because it's too hot, and the animals are in the forests where it's cooler. As soon as it starts to cool down, you will see loads of deer, peacocks and other animals emerge onto the savannah and start crossing the roads in other areas. My biggest complaint about this park is that it opens too late in the morning. Unfortunately the park doesn't open until 7:30AM, which means by the time you get your entry ticket and drive into the park, it's already getting hot, and you've really missed the best wildlife watching period of the day. You will still be able to catch the tail end of the morning period, and you can see a lot in the evening, but for a wildlife-focused park, it's frustrating that they don't let people into the park earlier. Most of the wildlife-focused parks I've visited in North America or Africa open much earlier, because they understand that this is prime-time for wildlife. Again, you can see a lot of great wildlife in the park, but if you want to see wildlife, and you are taking a tour from Banyuwangi, make sure the tour doesn't leave the park too early in the day, otherwise you will likely be disappointed. I expected to see a lot of Banteng in the park based on the photos and reviews I saw online but I did not see any despite being in the park all day for 4 days. This may be a seasonal thing, but just be aware they aren't easy to see, unlike the wild buffalo which always seem to be around. I never really expect to see big cats like leopards in any park, but I talked to some of the workers in the park and they said they do see them quite frequently. Unfortunately they only see them at night crossing the road, and as a tourist you can't be in the park at night. Nice to know the leopards are there though even if your chances of actually seeing them is very small. I also feel the park could use some investment. The mangrove trail is closed, the observation tower at the savannah is closed, and overall, there aren't a lot of hiking opportunities. There used to be lodging inside the park, but this is also closed. Bama beach is the center of activity. It's much cooler during the day, and very pretty. The facilities are also much better there, with some small restaurants and decent bathrooms. Overall, Baluran was one of my favorite spots in Indonesia. There is amazing wildlife if you visit at the right time, and the open savannah with Baluran mountain in the background is beautiful.
Leo S — Google review
Baluran National Park is often praised as the "Africa of Java" for its unique savannah landscape and wildlife, but reviews are mixed regarding the experience and value, with some citing high fees for foreigners and limited activities beyond sightseeing. Visitors can see savanna, beaches (like Bama Beach), mangroves, and diverse wildlife like deer, buffalo, and peacocks, but sightings depend on timing and luck. Unique landscape: The park's "savannah of Java" offers a stark contrast to typical Indonesian scenery and is great for photography. Wildlife spotting: Visitors can see various animals, especially at dawn or dusk, including deer, buffalo, monkeys, and peacocks. Diverse ecosystems: Within the park, you can experience different environments, including savannas, forests, mangrove trails, and beaches like Bama Beach, which is good for snorkeling. Educational value: It's a great place for learning about nature and the environment. Sunrise and sunset: The park is known for beautiful sunrises and sunsets, particularly from Bama Beach.

Ijen

Mentioned on

Complex volcano
Nature & Parks
Ijen, located in Indonesia, is a set of volcanoes known for the mesmerizing sight of vibrant blue flames created by sulfuric gas. Mount Ijen boasts the largest acidic crater lake globally, and visitors can witness the surreal phenomenon of blue flames emanating from it at night. It's a popular attraction in Java, drawing tourists to marvel at the epic sunrise from Mount Ijen Crater Rim.
If you are an experienced, fit hiker…there is no need to get a guide and/or tour. Book a room near the entrance of the park (many options). The place will help you get gas masks, handle the entry ticket for the hike (register online, pay in person in cash), and rent extra clothing/head lamps as needed. The health certificate will be more of a pain, as it needs to be done in advance (I believe). Our driver took care of it for us on the way. The hike is some 3.8k to the crater rim, with a lot of elevation gain. Then down into the crater. No matter how early you arrive it will be mobbed…even if you don’t hire a guide you will be surrounded by them. Aside from the hike in/out of the crater itself, the hike is on a well-established, open path, but must be done in the dark to see the blue flames. Park opens the gate at 2.00 am; be there a bit earlier (before ~1.30) to beat the crowds a bit and pay for your ticket. There will be “traffic” basically the entire hike. You will save some money, but I’d say doing the hike independently is more just a personal choice based on preference…a tour can of course circumvent a good amount of logistics and planning. But on the whole, certainly manageable solo.

Not easy to go here, wake up early at 2m to move to the base of the mountain, 3-4 hours trekking to the top of Ijen. As long as you don't give up, you can reach there. If you can't trek for longer, don't worry, they have special taxi service to carry you there 😆
Nguyen T — Google review
Spectacular! We chose to start our walk to the top of Ijen at about 6am, this is due to the desire of avoiding the masses of people that try to get there for sunrise (which can be unpredictable), the lake itself becomes more colourful as the sun gets higher in the sky. We got to plod along at our pace, enjoyed panoramic views with very few clouds, practically no-one else around, it was a perfect experience.

What an amazing experience and such a beautiful place to visit. Overall we spent a total of 4hr 30mins to climb the mountain, visit the crater and then come back. The climb up the mountain is steep and is uphill the majority of the way. Then to go down to the crater, it’s mainly rocks and dirt and is quite slippy. It was very very busy when we went, we got held up for a long time trying to get down to the crater, so be prepared. The blue fire was amazing to see, but surrounded by tourists as you would expect. Also avoid the sulfur smoke because it causes your eyes to water and can make you cough, even through the mask. They also ask at the bottom if you want to hire a coat- do NOT do this if you have a jumper or jacket already. We hired a coat and we took it off within 5mins of walking, amongst everything else we were wearing. The walk gets so hot as it’s all uphill. People were shirtless and in shorts by the time we got to the top. Additionally, you will be surrounded by tourists which block out the cold. Overall, this was quite a difficult trek, but 100% worth it. Make sure you wear good shoes.

One of the most thrilling experiences while visiting Indonesia. We stayed at Gilimanuck. The hike starts around 2 AM. Gas masks, sweaters, hiking sticks, etc. are available for rent from the starting point. For those who are unable to trek the 4 km hike, trolleys are provided by the locals. The 1 km descent to the lake shore is only possible on foot. The stunning green acid lake and blue fire offer a magnificent view. The active volcano with erupting sulphur produces a strong odour. Artworks made of sulphur are available as souvenirs from the site. The sunrise from the rim of the crater is a great view.
Feroz S — Google review
My visit to Mount Ijen was an unforgettable experience. The trail was quite crowded, especially during the time I went — it was clearly a very touristy period, and honestly, there were a bit too many people. That took away from the peaceful vibe I was hoping for. Because of the crowd, I chose not to go down to see the famous blue flames. It felt unsafe — people were pushing to get down, and it didn’t seem worth the risk. Still, the view from the top was absolutely stunning. The bright blue crater lake was breathtaking, even from above. The sunrise was partially hidden by fog, but it actually gave the whole scene a mysterious, magical feel. We were lucky with the wind direction too — we barely needed our gas masks, as the sulfur fumes weren’t too strong that morning. If you’re planning to go, definitely bring a flashlight, sunglasses, and good hiking shoes. Despite the crowd, it’s one of those rare places that truly lives up to the hype — a must-see at least once in your life.
Kim N — Google review
Beautiful and definitely worth doing — but you have to accept that you’ll be doing it alongside more than a thousand other tourists. Most people start the hike around 2 AM, so it gets crowded, and there’s often a traffic jam on the way down to the blue fire. Still, it’s quite an experience — a bit dangerous, but the sunrise and the mysterious blue flames make it all worthwhile.
Vũ C — Google review
Very beautiful blue mountain flames. Must prepare well with full coverage eye goggles and as well as the filter mask. It’s worth the trip and the climb. Must reach before 5am, the flame fades after that. Sulphur gas smells strong. The blue lake visible after 5am. The view when going down the mountain is fantastic too

Red Island Beach

Mentioned on

Outdoor Activities
Red Island Beach, also known as Pulau Merah, is a hidden gem located east of Java near Bali. This popular white sand beach offers challenging waves and strong winds, making it a paradise for surfers. The beach boasts soft sandy shores and a long coastline, with its own island featuring red soil and green vegetation that can be explored during low tide. While the entrance tickets are affordable, the remote location ensures a quiet and serene atmosphere with mesmerizing sunsets.
Red Island's striking geology is what gives this destination its distinctive character and name. The small, reddish-hued hill that emerges from the sea is composed primarily of iron-rich laterite soil, which has oxidized over time to create its characteristic rusty coloration. This geological formation is particularly fascinating because it stands in dramatic contrast to the surrounding black volcanic sand beaches, a result of the area's proximity to the Ijen volcanic complex. The island itself is essentially the eroded remnant of an ancient coastal formation, with its red cliffs showing clear stratification that reveals centuries of geological history. During low tide, fascinating rock formations are exposed around the island, including wave-cut platforms and sea caves that have been sculpted by the relentless action of the Indian Ocean's powerful waves. The surrounding seafloor features an interesting mix of sandy patches and volcanic rock reefs, which help create the excellent surfing conditions. Geologists would appreciate how the area showcases the dynamic interplay between volcanic activity, coastal erosion, and sedimentation processes that have shaped this unique landscape over millennia. The red coloration is most intense during the dry season when the iron oxides in the soil are more exposed, while the rainy season brings out deeper reddish-brown tones as water permeates the mineral-rich earth. This ever-changing geological palette, combined with the dramatic tides and powerful surf, makes Red Island a living laboratory of coastal geology that's as educational as it is visually stunning.

Sukamade beach is a secluded coastal area within the Meru Betiri National Park, surrounded by lush tropical forests. It serves as an important conservation site for sea turtles, which come ashore year-round to lay their eggs in the sandy beach. The beach is part of the Merubetiri Conservation and has become a favorite among tourists due to its turtle conservation efforts. Visitors can witness the adorable sight of turtles making their way to the sea.
Definitely a big program which worth the price and the time investment. That said it is not for everyone as the accommodation is bare minimal and basic. And that is what you have to consider if you are fine with it. The other part is luck: not always will you be lucky to see the turtles laying eggs. Most of the time you do, but there can be occasions where you won't and it could be tough. The rest is amazing! Great guides, stories, the village and the people in it are lovely and open in general. Take a walk there and if you have the time visit the rubber and coffee factory as well. The turtles were of course the main show and both events with them was phenomenal! The egg-watch and the baby turtle release both are experiences worth alone the travel there. At the end I was really tired but this was an amazing experience!

It was great to see a real life sea turtle on the beach and let the little ones out to sea the next morning! Only downside is the long and bumpy road back and forth and why do we need to get up at 5am to set the turtles free? I'm sure they are fine waiting another few hours :)

We had a great time visiting Madakaripura Waterfall! I came with my two kids and was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty kid-friendly. The track is beginner-friendly and manageable, though there are a few slightly tricky parts – nothing too difficult, especially with a guide or some help. Just make sure to bring raincoat – you will get wet! 🌿 Even if you don’t, the locals also sell it. One tip: bring some cash and wear shoes that are suitable for trekking and okay to get wet – you’ll definitely need them. A wonderful nature adventure for families!

Fyi, you’ll be amazed seeing this view. I’ll suggest you to come between June-August because the guide said that it was the most beautiful moment to visit waterfall. I gave 5 stars for the services, the cleaness and ofc for the hospitality. My guide was Pak Uyik, he’ll help you to cross the stream and took a lots of photos. Thanks for the experience Madakaripura! I’ll visit again between that months so, I can get a better view 🫶🏼

You’ll read a lot of scam about the place. In fact we really had to pay 150 k rupees per person (around 8 euro) for a short motorbike ride to the rainfall and got helmets and a local guide who brought us to the place. The money was more than worth it! You’ll get really wet, prepare!

Very beautiful and unbelievable. At first we just walked but when we noticed it was far away we just get a guide, and dont let them force you to pay huge money on guides if you dont want to pay it. (it is probably not mandotory but after a hard negatitonship, we just take the guide anyways because it was far away to walk.) Definitely bring sliper or open shoes and some raincoat or smth. But after all, it was worth to see.

An absolutely breathtaking view, truly the most stunning waterfall I’ve ever witnessed. The journey to get there was fairly manageable. The hike was around 30 mins from the locket, with mostly flat tracks, a few shallow river crossings, and a couple of mild inclines. Nothing too demanding, especially with a guide and safety gear like helmets provided. Important tip: always check the weather forecast before your visit. When it rains, access to the waterfall is strictly prohibited due to the serious risk of landslides and flash floods. It’s better to postpone your trip than to put yourself in danger.

From the parking to the base took 5minutes ride by motorcycle. Then, 30mins hike to madakaripura waterfall We could only spent an hour because we arrived late.. We reached there around 3.45pm. entrance closing time 4pm.. But less crowd and easy to get spot for photo.. The water was really cold. Superb nice waterfall, will come early next time. Worth the visit.

Definitely one of the most amazing waterfalls I've ever seen in my life and I've seen lots. Truly a majestic sight for the eyes ❤️✨ The trekking is very very easy for a beginner and kaum rebahan jaman now. But the steps to the waterfall were quite slippery so tourists must be careful. In my experience, the entrance, guide, helmet and ojek fee was reasonable and the local people there were quite friendly and polite. We paid for IDR 410,000 total for 6 pax. Before we left, we had lunch in "warung makan mbak anis" and it was definitely the highlight of the day. The sambal was top notch, everything was as requested; they spicyness and everything. Then we had a whole coconut as a dessert which put the cherry on top to the whole experience of visiting Madakaripura. Recommended 😊😍

Mount Bromo, located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java Province, is a picturesque volcano with a stairway leading to its crater. To reach Mount Bromo, visitors can travel overland from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang and then hire a Jeep Hardtop to explore the seas of sand and the crater. The mountain is renowned for its stunning sunrise views, which can be enjoyed from the top of Penanjakan.
Very beautiful and grand. The sunrise is beautiful. Not really hard journey to go up. Driver driving jeep for most is the route. Bottom of the Mountain Bromo is with a lot of volcano ashes, better to wear a musk, even though guide says no.
Skye C — Google review
Would recommend doing it in the afternoon around 2-3 pm, we used the villagers’ path to avoid the park entrance fee. The hike down the path was slightly slopey, but once you reach the sea of sand it is all flat and sandy it’s a fairly easy walk.
Korrine K — Google review
Visiting Mount Bromo was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life. The journey started early before dawn the air was cold, the stars still shining, and the excitement building with every step. As the sky slowly turned from deep blue to shades of pink and gold, the view of Bromo’s smoky crater appeared, surrounded by rolling hills and mist. It felt unreal, like standing on another planet. Watching the sunrise from the viewpoint was pure magic — the sun peeked over the horizon, lighting up the sea of clouds and painting the volcano in gold. The wind was cold, but the moment was warm with awe and peace. Every second felt worth the early wake-up and the climb. Mount Bromo isn’t just a place you visit it’s an experience you feel. The sound of the wind, the smell of sulfur, the endless view of nature’s power and beauty truly legendary. 🌋✨

no words, only emotions...We started early from Surabaya, then continued by jeep through the misty Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The highlight — a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds, followed by a scenic jeep ride and a hike to the crater of Mount Bromo itself.

If you are in Surabaya, you must climb Bromo. Best to go for a sunrise hike. The mountains and the view from the vantage point is incredible. It's such an amazing mountain with incredible folklore. This is a sacred mountain so please do not litter (there were a lot in the surroundings). There is also an altar of Ganesha where you can make offerings. There are also plenty of peddlers selling snacks and drinks. The climb is actually easy for physically fit people. But do note that there is a steep staircase climb to reach the mouth of the volcano. Alternatively, you may opt to rent a horse ride. In all, it's a must visit place.
Muhammad M — Google review
Mt. Bromo is a stunning place and definitely worth visiting, BUT... It's not well maintained, polluted and not much is invested into it's environment. See the picture how the fence around the crater looks like... Not very safe. I went during the day and it was not crowded. And obviously the horses don't get enough food. The horse ride is really not necessary...
M S — Google review
Beautiful crater and beautiful view of the sandy sea. Access by scooter or Jeep. Scooter parking 5000 rupees but you can park it in the same place as the Jeep (free). Then walk 10/15 minutes to get to the bottom of the stairs to climb the Mont. Entrance to the Mount = 250,000 rupees per person. Exorbitant and shameful price. HORSE ABUSE!!! Stop renting horses because you don't want to walk 15 minutes !!! Shame on Indonesians and tourists!!
Co C — Google review
I booked with a local tour group and had an amazing experience at Mt Bromo. The tour starts around midnight and we arrived at the viewpoint by 3 am to wait for the sunrise. The wait was a bit long since the sun comes up closer to 5 am and it was chilly, but you can rent a blanket for 25,000 IDR. The sunrise over Mt Bromo is absolutely breathtaking and the jeep ride through the desert to get there was exciting on its own. Our guides were wonderful and made everything smooth and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Mt Bromo.

Mount Semeru, the tallest peak in Java, is a hiker's paradise that promises an unforgettable adventure. This active volcano offers a multi-day trek that rewards those who take on its challenging trails with breathtaking views. Starting from Surabaya, East Java’s vibrant capital filled with historical charm and modern attractions, adventurers embark on a two-day journey to the summit.
My first time on doing mountain climbing. The hardest one, but the most rewarding. The highest point of Java, with the most beautiful river. All in one package. 10/10 God creation.
Radityo D — Google review
As an experienced hiker I can tell you it’s not to hard except to the summit. I believe it’s about 900 m elevation to the top and all thru the volcanic sand which is like one step up and slide a half step back. You will start most likely in the night between 12am -3am depending on your shape and pase. It’s Getting cold in the night while hiking up so have the right clothes with you. View is Just insane, semeru erupts approximately every 15 minute, sometimes it takes up to 90 minutes and then the explosion and smoke will be bigger.

This is the best and most beautiful mountain in Indonesia for who loved adventure and hard tracks! You must try to summit and you will be able to try again and you will not never to forget how beautifully this place!

What you can ask for the best yet highest mountain in java island. The trip will take 16-20 hours of hiking. You can camp on ranu kumbolo on the first day and camp on kalimati on second day, and then go summit at late night on second day / early morning on third day. There are a lot of beautiful view that will satisfied your eyes, from basecamp to summit. Preparation should be extra for this hiking, eventho there are porter and warung on every post and campsite, there are toilet on ranukumbolo and kalimati, ranukumbolo toilet is fine but dont expect to much on kalimati. Watersource available on ranu kumbolo and near kalimati.
Alirsyad P — Google review
This was my first time experience for hiking. I couldn't say that is easy for the first timer. So, if you are first timer maybe you can try another easy-to-reach-mountain. I think the landscape is still okay from the starting point to Kalimati. But, the hardest part is from Kalimati to the mountain peak. From the starting point, it took around 2 days to reach the top of the mountain, depend on your ability. I need a lot of short break and camping in Ranukumbolo and Kalimati. Believe me, if you visit Ranukumbolo, you want to comeback again someday. During the hiking, the temperature is freaking cold, especially at night. I couldn't sleep well because of this even if I wore proper clothes and covered myself with sleeping bag. Since hiking become a popular activity in Indonesia, mountain especially in Java is more crowded than before. Badly, I decided to hike Semeru Mountain during long weekend. So, it was super crowded!!! Honestly it made me uncomfortable a little bit.
Evi S — Google review
During my stay in Indonesia I did 4 hikes but the Mount Semeru hike was the most challenging and rewarding by far! 2 days trek with awesome guide from Our Trip 1st tour operator. Day 1 is relatively easy arou d 10 km and 500 meter prominence during 6 hours. Day 2 starts at night and is around 5 km climb with 1,000 meters prominence at steep and rocky slope of Semeru. Headlamp wrongly recommend and one has to be really careful with falling rocks - apparently every year people get injured and die this way. The view on Mount Bromo and Java is very rewarding.

The Surabaya Submarine Monument, also known as Monkasel, is a unique tourist destination located in the central Genteng district on the banks of the Kalimas River. It features a decommissioned Soviet submarine, KRI Pasopati 410, which was used by the Indonesian navy during the 1960s. The monument serves to commemorate Indonesia's naval history and heroism.
Surabaya is a city full of diverse tourism attractions, perfect not only for adults but also for children. One spot that’s perfect for a family outing is the Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam). It’s a great option for a short, educational holiday activity for your little ones. The location is super easy to find—it’s just across the river to the north of Surabaya Train Station, right by a main road and a big river. The entrance fee is really affordable, and what you get is totally worth it. Inside, you’ll get to explore the submarine and see what it’s like inside. It’s a cool experience for both kids and adults to learn about how a submarine works. The best part? Each room is equipped with air conditioning, so it’s nice and comfortable, even with lots of visitors around. There’s also a guide who’ll explain all the parts of the submarine, from the back to the front, so you can really understand how everything works. That said, the submarine is the only attraction here, so it’s more of a quick stop rather than a full-day activity. But it’s definitely worth adding to your Surabaya itinerary if you’re looking for something unique and educational to enjoy during your trip!
Tutut W — Google review
I'm glad I let my curiosity get the better of me today and visited the submarine. I think walking/crawling through the submarine gave me a much better idea of what sailors commit to as crew members. Not a career I'd want! Sufficient signage in English to understand what each section is for. The nuclear submaine in the movie Red October looks palatial compared to this boat. Video drama was closed during my visit. 25,000 rupiah for international guests, 15,000 rupiah for Indonesians.

We had a quite good guided tour at this place. The tour took approximately one hour. The only issue was the language barrier. I wish the guide had better English skills at such a touristic spot. But the whole visit was impressive.

A very special monuments and hardly found elsewhere... This Submarines Monument in Surabaya is worth a visit as it is a real Submarine. It has serve the sea around 17000++ of island of Indonesia... real and attractive.. Especially the 6 big Torpedoo it carries on the vessel...

The Experience: It’s not every day you get to walk into the belly of a Soviet-built submarine in the middle of a city! The Monumen Kapal Selam (Monkasel) is a fascinating stop, especially if you appreciate military history or engineering. The Highlights: Authenticity: This isn't a replica; it's the real KRI Pasopati 410. Seeing the original equipment—from the massive torpedo tubes (which look intimidating up close!) to the vintage radio communication gear—really transports you back in time. The "Real" Submarine Feel: My photos show just how tight the corridors and bunk areas are. It gives you a newfound respect for the 63 crew members who lived in these confined spaces for months. It is a bit of a squeeze walking through, but that’s part of the authentic experience. Well-Maintained: The exterior is freshly painted in striking green and black, and the interior equipment looks surprisingly well-preserved considering its age. Educational: It seems to be a favourite for school trips (saw lots of students there), which adds a lively atmosphere. Things to Know Before You Go: Not for the Claustrophobic: As you can see from the narrow hallways, it is a tight squeeze. If you are tall or dislike enclosed spaces, just be prepared to duck your head! Accessibility: There are steep stairs to enter and exit, and you have to step through circular bulkhead doors, so comfortable shoes are a must. The Verdict: A unique, quick, and affordable attraction right in the heart of Surabaya. It’s a great short visit (about 30min) that offers a cool perspective on Indonesia's maritime history.

Surabaya Submarine Monument, or Monumen Kapal Selam, is one of the must-visit landmarks in Surabaya for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Located near the Kalimas River, this iconic attraction is a decommissioned Soviet-built submarine, KRI Pasopati 410, transformed into a museum. It offers a rare chance to step inside an actual submarine and get a glimpse of its intricate layout and equipment. What makes this monument stand out is its impressive preservation and the opportunity to experience the history of Indonesia’s naval past up close. Walking through the narrow passages and observing the original machinery provides a fascinating insight into the life of a submariner. The detailed exhibits and accompanying video presentations help visitors understand the historical significance of the submarine, making it both an educational and memorable experience. While the monument is an excellent place to visit at any time, visiting at night adds a unique charm to the experience. The cooler temperatures make it more comfortable to explore, and the monument is beautifully illuminated, creating a picturesque and serene ambiance. The night visit allows you to enjoy the surrounding area in a more relaxed and peaceful setting. Overall, the Surabaya Submarine Monument is an engaging attraction that combines history, education, and a touch of adventure. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with family, it’s a destination worth adding to your itinerary when in Surabaya.
Fadhil A — Google review
A good stop if you're interested in submarines or military. Entrance fee is cheap, but is justified by the fact that the only exhibit is the submarine. The submarine is one of the 12 whiskey class submarines that Indonesia bought during their navy's early days, and saw service from 1962 to 1990. The interior of the ship haven't changed much since it was in service (besides the countless AC units inside), and you're required to go through some small hatches as you go through the ship. Interestingly some cryllic letters are still visible in some labels. If you want more information about the Indonesian navy highly recommend visiting the Indonesian Navy Museum as well.
Pachi K — Google review
The Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam) is one of Surabaya’s most interesting historical attractions. Visitors can explore the interior of the KRI Pasopati, a real submarine used by the Indonesian Navy, complete with informative displays about its history and operations. The location is excellent—right in the city center and easy to reach from various hotels and attractions. A well-maintained site that offers a unique insight into Indonesia’s naval history. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a very well known park in Surabaya, even people from outside Surabaya knows a little about this park. The park is really green and beautiful because of many trees, that also make the air become cooler here. There are many areas for people to do skateboard, jogging, and many kind of sports. A playground for children also available here. It can be accessed easily because of being located near the city centre, and many public transportation through this place.

I dared to post photos from an off-the-beaten angles. I'm not sure why this park is popular after actually visiting here. Yeah, it's big and green. You can enjoy fresh air, however it's never a quiet place. It's surrounded by busy roads. Well, this is not a touristy spot from the beginning. By the way, it might be good for lunch since you can find an open-air food court(?) somewhere in this plot. Oasis for businesspeople.

Monumen Tugu Pahlawan dan Museum Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya is an iconic memorial complex that commemorates the historic Battle of Surabaya in 1945. The Hero Monument, inaugurated by Soekarno, stands as a tribute to Indonesia's independence heroes. The Sepuluh November Museum, located within the complex, is the only museum in Indonesia dedicated to honoring the events of November 10 in Surabaya.
Pretty cool monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers during the Battle of Surabaya. The area is calm and quiet, suitable for a short visit. The history behind this monument is pretty interesting, you can visit the museum if you like to learn more in person. I didn't have time to visit the museum so can't comment on it.
Yuhng Y — Google review
Visited Museum Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya and Monumen Tugu Pahlawan. The experience was quite okay-ish overall. Considering the extraordinary history of Surabaya’s struggle, I felt it could be presented in a more engaging and impactful way. That being said, there are still some parts that are well-done and informative, especially the dioramas, which give a clearer picture of the events. On the positive side, the entrance fee is very affordable, so in terms of price-to-value it’s quite okay — though I think the overall experience can still be improved to better reflect the importance of the history it represents.
Ryan A — Google review
This museum covers the history of Surabaya, but focuses mostly on the Battle of Surabaya. The garden gives you a grand welcome to the museum, then take the left route to be led into the museum. Tickets cost 15K and requires you register online before buying a ticket. The museum was redoing the second floor of the exhibit when I visited November 2025. Compared to the other museums I visited I felt like they could've done a better job showing what happened and improve the display but with the unique shape of the building I feel artistic qualities take precedence.
Pachi K — Google review
As Surabaya is well-known as Kota Pahlawan (The City of Heroes), this spot is definitely a must-visit during your city tour. Tugu Pahlawan stands tall and proud, right above the Museum Sepuluh November which is surprisingly modern, clean, and fully air-conditioned (a big plus in Surabaya heat!). The entrance ticket is super affordable (only Rp 8.000.pax), and the museum gives a nice glimpse into Indonesia’s struggle for independence, with well-curated displays like Bung Tomo’s voice, dioramas, and old war relics. Just a heads-up: don’t go visit the monument around noon unless you’re ready to melt—it gets really hot outside! The good things are the parking area is spacious, and once you’re done exploring, the area is surrounded by lots of street food and local eats to try.
Via N — Google review
A small museum under a part of the monument. Commemorating the independence struggles in Surabaya. Lots of information and artifacts from the colonial and post colonial era. Can complete a full tour in about an hour. The design and layout is old fashioned but nice.
Sukhvinder S — Google review
A visit to Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) and the Museum Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya offers more than just a glimpse into Indonesia’s history—it’s an emotional and educational journey into the spirit of national resistance. Towering at over 41 meters, the white obelisk of Tugu Pahlawan stands proudly in the heart of the city, surrounded by a peaceful garden that invites both quiet reflection and civic pride. Its design symbolizes the date of the historic Battle of Surabaya: 10 November 1945, a defining moment in Indonesia’s fight for independence. Beneath the monument lies the hidden gem: Museum Sepuluh Nopember. Built underground to preserve the monument’s prominence, the museum houses dioramas, relics, and audio-visual archives that bring to life the bravery of Surabaya’s youth and militia. One highlight is the powerful recording of Bung Tomo’s rallying speech, which echoes through the museum’s halls with raw emotion. The museum’s layout is thoughtfully arranged, taking visitors through episodes of battle, personal stories, and cultural resistance. While most exhibits are labeled in Bahasa Indonesia, the visual storytelling is strong enough to be appreciated by all visitors. The experience is especially impactful for students and anyone wanting to understand the roots of Indonesia’s national identity. In short, this site is not just a historical stop—it’s a symbol of sacrifice and unity. A must-visit when in Surabaya.

Indonesia Safari Park II Prigen

Wildlife and safari park
Tours
Sprawling, drive-through park with many wild animals at close range, plus shows & rides.
Such a fun experience that we got to interact closely with the animals. The staffs are really friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit. The cars get really crowded on weekends. And the Australiana zone is a must visit!

The area is huge, the animals are too common, nothing special. I just feel that they're too commercial. The feeling of going through a wild area wasn't there. The first day we rode on the park's vehicle. The driver only speaks Indonesian and he drove too fast. My friend booked to stay at Baobab for 2 nights, so we hired a car to make another tour and they tried to charge the extra 200k as he's a foreigner. After waited for 10 minutes they let us in.

Great family experience despite high price for foreigners (400,000 rupiah per person). After driving through the animals where you can feed them , there’s a small theme park with some rides and free dolphin/elephant shows. Really enjoyable for the whole family! Food at the cafe was delicious at reasonable price too! By the way, it is all cashless right from the entrance fees to cafe etc, so make sure to bring along a credit card.

Great place for family with small kids to enjoy, with various animals shows and also safari bus ride to bring you around their Safari area, feeding animals while on the go. Remember to buy your own vegetables, bananas and carrots prior to entering the Safari Park.

Excellent place for family. Theme park. Animal feeding, carnivore. Day and night feeding. Water theme park, rides for kids and adults. Restaurants and cafes. Lots of walking to and fro attractions. Not a place for seniors and no wheel chair access. Cool weather in July. Entry to the theme park is expensive for tourists compared to locals.

Almost similar to Taman Safari Cisarua, but the vibes. Here is more natural and cooler. Baby zoo is recommended. Online ticket can be bought thru the official Instagram. Parking lot is not big enough especially for holiday season

I had the best time of my life here feeding the cute animals. Ilama, deer, bambi reindeer and so forth.

Safari Park Prigen is the biggest safari park in Indonesia, and it truly lives up to its reputation. The park features a wide variety of very attractive animals and entertaining shows that are sure to delight visitors of all ages. Safari adventure is very entertaining. The landscape near the mountain adds to the enjoyment, providing stunning views and a refreshing atmosphere. Despite the park's popularity, the large area ensures that it never feels crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Overall, it's a fantastic destination for a fun and educational day out.

Batu Night Spectacular (BNS) is a captivating night theme park located in Batu city, nestled on the hillside of Mount Panderman. The park offers a range of attractions including 35 exciting rides like the Sepeda Udara (Air Bike), live shows, carnival games, and a vibrant market.
Great place to have someone with family. There are some lanterns that you can take pics. There is now go-kart available around 60k - 90k. Foods there are okay, there are 2 different food courts 1 inside nearby go-kart and the other one by the exit. Ticket without games is 65k if I'm not mistaken and with games (but not included with go-kart) is 125k (this price was on public holiday).

Great place, but for kids. please mind that if you're height not 120-140cm you only play little vehicles. It means you better buy ticket only not the full ticket package. because the officer will not explain it to you 😔... And I don't know why, we can only play once the vehicle, if you want more you need to buy ticket 😓.

Easy to locate! Went on a Sun night and it wasn’t too packed! Mostly locals, not much tourists so felt like a really authentic experience. A good mix of thrilling and chill rides, the weather was perfect for a night out here. Got the all access pass for 120k IDR and spent about 2 hours here. They had stalls selling drinks, snacks and a food court with live shows at selected timings. Definitely drop by if you’re in Batu!

The place isn't very big, but it has lots of rides—from kids to adults, everything’s pretty complete. I suggest checking what you want to try first, so you can decide if the all-access ticket is worth it. If you're not planning to try many rides, it's better to get regular tickets and pay for each ride. Kereta Terbang felt really fast and a bit scary—it looked like it might hit the signs because everything felt so close! 😅

While there may not have been a large number of attractions at night, there were definitely enough to keep our kids thoroughly entertained.

A must-visit night attraction in Batu. There are plenty of fun rides, great photo spots, and souvenir shops. The highlight is definitely the fascinating dancing fountain.

Jawa Timur Park 2, also known as East Java Park 2 in Batu Malang, is a modern and popular tourist destination that offers a unique blend of entertainment and education. The park features an animal park with various collections of animals, including monkeys, snakes, birds, seals, and camels. Visitors can explore the Museum Satwa to learn about extinct animals and view fossils of prehistoric creatures.
i took the full package at 170k, which is incl. secret zoo, drive thru, & amusement park. it was rlly fun, alot of rare & protected exotic animals found! such as komodo, capybara, aquarium, albino tigers, alpaca, etc. with their informations in front of the fences. the rides are making me feel dizzy, without roller coaster & upside down rides. i also played lot of rides, but for me it was not too extreme compared to JTP1. the rides are making me feel dizzy, but no upside down rides.

Very recommended place to spend your holiday with family Consists of 3 main area, museum satwa, secret zoo and VR area. Friendly for babies, 1 day is not enough to explore every section, you just cannot get enough
Wilsen W — Google review
The best place for kids, it has everything. Zoo contains almost all kinds of animals, park, soft play, rides, obstacle course. The most amazing thing is the way the Park is designed and it's a single way that is everything is along a single route you don't have to decide things like should I go left first or right and circle back, very easy to navigate and full stroller friendly. For foreigners you can get 20% Discount when you purchase ticket from the marketing department.

Place is huge but lack of concept. Huge variety but seems like it just mashed up together. Especially for the ride facilities. It only showed a broken down statue with minimum effort. No improvement since my last visit 10+ years ago.

Great experience. Better to come here in the eraly morning to enjoy all of it for slow walker, bring stroller for kids, bring clothes just in case, bring some cash & debit cards. Toilets are clean. There are Musholla. Friendly & well educates staffs. So many animals we can find here, not just the usual ones. The amusement park is at the end of the Secret Zoo's route and free. Clean environment. Lots of parking space & accessible for wheelchair. Many cheap food stalls

3rd time visiting this place. Last was on 2018. Still offering great experience. Have new area 'drive thru park'. Highly recommended to enjoying holiday with kids. Visit on mid October, so the place is not too crowded.

Very pleasing and enjoyable experience! However, increasing the payment options to allow cashless method will be very fun!

It's cool. You must visit this place when you are at Batu Malang. The ticket is affordable, during weekend only 170K and you can enjoy Batu Secret Zoo and drive thru attraction. The area is large. I spent time from 10.00 AM to 15.30 PM. It's a fun and enjoying place.
