Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens

Mentioned on

Museum
Specialty Museums
The Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens in Dover, Ohio is a tribute to the renowned wood-carver Ernest "Mooney" Warther. Visitors can explore the home where he and his family lived, view his intricate wood carvings at the Button House, and see his untouched carving workshop from 1973. The museum also features the Dave Warther Arboretum with a diverse range of plant species.
Visited the Warther Museum once again, not only for the carvings, but the stories as well. There have been changes since COVID but their was no impact on the carvings, button collection, going through the old house, and the arrow heads collected and mounted. They are a story in themselves. This is true Americana. People who had dreams and the talent to make those dreams come to frution. If you haven't been, you wont be disappointed. Fabulous
Laura F — Google review
The Warther Museum teaches more than about Mr. Warther, we learned a lot about trains and the area around Dover before the European Settlers. Our group had a small child and there was room for her to walk around as we all saw the exhibits. If you like coins, there is a penny collection from 1773-1909. Amazing!
H B — Google review
This place was way better than I anticipated. I'd go back to spend more time viewing the exhibits. This is no second class museum. We learned a lot and really enjoyed it.
Larry E — Google review
I had never heard of Ernest and Frieda Warther but the visit to the museum, gardens, button house, and home was fascinating and well worth the price of admission ($20 adult; $19 senior 65+). I don't know how Mooney Warther carved all those train pieces by hand!! We took the guided tour, which I recommend. I think you'll get a much more in-depth understanding of Warther's work with the docent explaining everything. Well worth the drive to Dover, OH (from Cuyahoga Falls it's a 45-minute drive).
Virginia M — Google review
I came here with my mom as a kid but never knew where it was. When my husband and I decided to spend the night in Amish Country I decided to look for things to do and saw this. Knowing his love for trains and history i brought him. He loved it. I wish we'd have had more time. I will plan better next time.
Alice G — Google review
Very interesting museum! Well laid out, and exceptionally neat and clean. Well worth the visit.
John D — Google review
Amazing! I had the privilege to receive a pair of hand carved pliers from Mr. Warther when I was a small child. I just visited the museum again more than 5 decades later and was blown away. There are no words to describe the talent of this wonderful man, you must experience it first hand. I recommend joining one of the tours. It did not take too long and made the museum come alive and be so much more interesting. A must see gem in central Ohio.
Sheena M — Google review
I will be honest, I had never heard of the museum, Ernest Warther, or his carvings. We went with a group to the museum and I am so happy we did. The carvings on display are amazing! Probably the world's best woodcarver in all of history. The precision is mind-blowing. We were amazed at the talent. The museum does a great job telling the story of his life, which is very interesting, as well as presenting his amazing talents. I just can't say enough of how happy I am to have gotten to see and learn about the works of Ernest Warther. Also, the story of his family and spouse is great too. We also enjoyed seeing his wife's collection of buttons. All worth seeing. I highly recommend it and would certainly return.

World's Largest Cuckoo Clock

Mentioned on
11 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The World's Largest Cuckoo Clock is a charming and whimsical attraction located in Sugarcreek, Ohio. This fully functional cuckoo clock features a water wheel, a dancing couple, and a four-piece polka band. Visitors can enjoy an hourly musical performance by the cuckoo bird from spring through fall. Adjacent to the clock is the Alpine Hill Museum, which showcases the town's history. The downtown area offers plenty of parking for visitors to easily access this entertaining spectacle.
I tell you you got to see it at least once! It is the world's largest, in a very nice small town. I was expecting a little more mechanical action, but it was worth the trip. It runs every 30 minutes and the park around it is pretty nice too.
Keith G — Google review
This is a very unique attraction and well made. However, there are two benches sitting right in front that make it harder to get a great photo without others if you are wanting one. Also, only on the hour and half hour does it “come to life” so you need to plan accordingly to see it at its best. Overall, a neat experience. It’s free to experience too. Also, parking is probably easier on a weekday than on weekends, so be prepared to walk a few blocks.
Katie H — Google review
It was fun to see the Clock and when it goes off on the hour. You can walk around the little city and visit the shops. They do have a museum the show you items from early 1900's It was a good time, but not a whole lot to do for kids. It is also based around eating at the restaurants and ice cream shops.
Laura J — Google review
Free things to do in sugarcreek Ohio. Well maintain and surrounded by cute local gift shop. Highly recommend this place to visit with family and friends
Chintan T — Google review
Well the name fits the description. It is in fact the world largest cuckoo clock. It's worth seeing because you won't see the world's largest anywhere else. Or at least shouldn't.
Kay B — Google review
Just got back from Sugarcreek, Ohio, where the world’s largest cuckoo clock made me question every clock I’ve ever owned. (Sorry, iPhone, but do you have a dancing couple 💃🕺AND a yodeling bird? 🐦⏰ Didn’t think so.) After the clock struck “Whoaaa,” I wandered over to the Alpine Hills Historical Museum & Information Center 🏔️🏛️, where I learned that Ohio has more Swiss charm than my grandma’s cheese drawer. 🧀🇨🇭 10/10 would recommend for anyone who loves quirky roadside attractions 🚗, history 📚, and the thrill of not knowing when a giant wooden bird will pop out and surprise you! 😱😂 #CuckooForSugarcreek #SwissInOhio #ClockedInFun

Great little town. Clock was great, museum was very nice, the Secret Garden was incredible. Highly recommend visiting Sugar Creek.

The Farm At Walnut Creek

Zoo
Sights & Landmarks
Farms
Working farm that's also home to hundreds of exotic animals, plus a produce stand & gift shop.
Our family decided to spend a day at The Farm At Walnut Creek, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable adventures we’ve ever had. From the very first moments, you feel like you’ve stepped into another world – rolling green fields, peaceful scenery, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and truly enjoy the experience. 🚗 The drive-through safari was absolutely magical. As soon as we rolled the windows down, curious animals started to approach us, each one eager for a little snack. We were able to feed zebras, llamas, deer, and even a giraffe – an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults. The animals are gentle and friendly, which made every encounter exciting yet calm and safe. 🌿 After the safari drive, we explored the walking part of the farm. It was wonderful to see a variety of animals up close, take our time, and really enjoy the natural surroundings. The staff were kind, helpful, and clearly care deeply about the animals, which made the visit even more enjoyable. For families, couples, or anyone who wants to step away from the rush of daily life, The Farm At Walnut Creek is the perfect escape. We came home with smiles, incredible photos, and beautiful memories. This is not just a zoo or a farm – it’s an experience that leaves you feeling connected to nature and full of joy. We’ll definitely be coming back! 🌟

Awesome day today at Walnut Creek with the family. We didn’t know what to expect when we showed up and thought it was going to be a normal petting zoo. However, it was way more than that. We chose the self guiding tour, which was $15 per adult, and $12 per senior. They have feed you can purchase for $3 a bucket. Bring cash because that’s all they accept. They have an option where you can do a tour on a horse and buggy cart, similar to what you’d see at a pumpkin patch. If we come back that’s what I’d do, so you can interact more with the animals. The self guiding car tour was a lot of fun though so I wasn’t disappointed. The animals literally come up to your car and will eat out of your hands.
C G — Google review
Very cool place to see some cool animals. Some were much more demanding than others (like the llama that came running for my car) but it was chaotic fun nonetheless. Definitely requires a good and careful driver to navigate the roadways and animals. Overall the experience comes recommended from me! Hoping to catch a wagon ride if I visit again.
Anna K — Google review
This place was awesome! Well worth the money! If you drive through, your car might get scratched though. No big deal though, just take a wagon instead! Either way, so much fun! The kids loved it! The photos say it all!!!

The Farm at Walnut Creek – Trying to find something to do? Well go ahead and ditch the daily grind and embark on an unforgettable adventure to The Farm at Walnut Creek located at in Sugarcreek, OH. I got to experience this farm when I was up in Ohio for a family visit and let me tell you, this place has over 500 animals from six continents, right in the heart of Ohio's Amish Country. Owned by a North Carolina resident renowned expert in the transportation and care of exotic animals, ran by the Amish and they don’t skip a beat. Forget boring car rides; here, you can choose your adventure: a thrilling drive-thru experience from the comfort of your own vehicle, or for the ultimate immersion, hop aboard a charming horse-drawn wagon ride, me and the family chose the wagon ride of course. Prepare for giggles due to the banter, the knowledgeable and incredibly interactive staff will be your guides, sharing fascinating facts and engaging stories that bring each animal encounter to life, making the experience even more enriching and entertaining for the whole family. IT was a blast, and we were all surprised and in awe as you come face-to-face with exotic creatures like towering giraffes, striped zebras, alongside familiar friends such as horses, fluffy llamas, powerful buffaloes, and graceful deer. The best part? You'll have the incredible opportunity to hand-feed many of these amazing animals, creating memories that will last a lifetime. IF you need something fun and exciting to get out the house make the drive and support a local farm

The wagon ride was amazing .Up close to see the animals and feed them. We had so much fun. After the wagon ride we saw even more animals around the pond. There is a covered bridge! So beautiful place ! So much to see. Look out for the white spotted cow ...she gets your bucket in the middle of the wagon she is so smart .
Stephanie H — Google review
Had much fun riding on a horse-drawn wagon hand-feeding bison and bulls and other critters who came right up to the wagon. Made me feel like a kid again. A clean, well-run professional place. Very enjoyable!
Dan K — Google review
We have been to Amish Country many times but we had never been to The Farm At Walnut Creek! We will definitely return again and again! We drove our vehicle through because we were new to the experience! The next time we will ride on the wagon and feed the animals. I absolutely loved being right there with the animals. I got so excited with each new animal that came to our vehicle!! I can’t wait until the next time we visit the area so we can return to The Farm At Walnut Creek!!

The Wilds

Wildlife and safari park
Nature & Parks
The Wilds is an extraordinary conservation center nestled in southeastern Ohio, spanning approximately 10,000 acres. Established in 1984 as a nonprofit initiative, it offers visitors a unique safari-like experience that includes thrilling ziplines and horseback animal explorations. For those seeking a romantic getaway, Nomad Ridge provides luxurious yurts exclusively for adults since its opening in 2009. Guests rave about the well-organized tours and engaging experiences available on-site, from guided sunset viewings to fishing adventures.
What an experience! The Wilds is an Ohio gem that is well worth the money. I would say great for kids 4 and up. The open air tour was so much fun, we saw so many animals near and far from the bus. They do have food and water on site as well as a great gift shop. The bus was a rough ride a times, more so at the back of the bus. Our tour guide was full of knowledge and made sure we saw everything. The beauty of the park and restoration efforts are worth seeing even if you aren't interested in the animals. They've done a great job making everything accessable for everyone, even the handicapped. Don't miss this adventure!

We stayed two nights in the Grand Yurt. The yurt was perfect. Central AC, mini fridge, and super comfy bed. The provided meals were delicious. The yurts are a short walk to the Overlook Cafe. There is a slight walk down to the Grand Yurt. The concierge service is a nice touch. The Open Air Safari was very educational. Make sure to bring a drink with you. The Wild Side Safari was exceptional. You get up close and personal with a lot of the animals. The Rhinos like to rub against the jeep. Bottled water was provided. The Zip Line was a lot of fun. Again, I suggest you bring water with you. All of the staff were very informative as well as helpful and fun.

The Force is alive in every hoofbeat and roar at The Wilds. We embarked on the Wildside Safari, and it surpassed every expectation. Rather than being confined to paved paths, we rode off-road in a custom truck with padded seats and a canopy — comfort and adventure in harmony. The open-air safari is lovely, but restricted to roads; the Wildside version lets you move closer to the animals, even into hidden corners of their habitat. (Be sure to bring binoculars as backup!) A moment I will never forget: we visited the giraffe barn and hand-fed a giraffe. With chill in the air, they’d been brought inside — an exclusive experience only possible on Wildside. To look eye to eye with that gentle giant and extend your hand is to touch a living Force. Our guide channeled true Jedi wisdom, weaving facts, conservation tales, and ways we can help protect these creatures and their world. After the safari, we browsed the gift shop and dined at the café, gazing out over the vast meadows — a scene so tranquil it could quiet the busiest mind. The Wilds also offers ziplining, horseback riding, and lodging options (yurts, cabins, camping). In fact, when you stay overnight, you may even get a tour‐discount. 📸 Jedi Camera Tips: Wide-angle lens captures sweeping vistas, savanna skies, and dramatic herd scenes. Zoom or telephoto lens (100–500mm or similar) gets you intimate shots of rhinos, giraffes, and especially those up-close barn moments. Don’t forget to shoot in “burst” or continuous mode — animals move with sudden grace.
Dain W — Google review
We had a great time and awesome experience! Our tour guide was amazing, we couldn't have asked for better! (Got lucky there! 🙃) The animals were active, we had a cool brisk morning, everything but the giraffes were out and about. Glad we brought binoculars but still had all the animals close enough we didnt "NEED" them by any means.
Elizabeth D — Google review
It was a great experience, the tour guide was very helpful, love animals with a passion. We get to feed the animals. The facility was very clean well maintained, a great place for family to hang out, educated your kids about wildlife, nice scenery to get some fresh air or read a book. I will definitely return again in the spring.

Visiting The Wilds was a wonderful experience. Seeing these endangered species in a natural setting is an experience I will cherish. The animals we saw were not the only thing that made our visit special, the enthusiasm displayed by all the employees we interacted with was outstanding! You will not regret visiting The Wilds.
Erin R — Google review
Exceeded our expectations. We stayed in a king sized yurt and did the Wildside tour. Worth every single penny. We got up close to the animals and learned so much new information from Logan, our tour guide. We got to feed a giraffe also! Lois was the best concierge staff for Nomad Ridge and we shared great conversations with other guests around the fire. Dinner and breakfast were included with our stay.

I was invited by friends to see the Wilds safari. We rode in an open bus. They also have closed bus tours. They quit allowing private car tours when they got rhinos. They don't have elephants or giraffes, but they have a number of endangered species. The lady bus driver/tour guide was knowledgeable. All in all, the tour was interesting and the bus stopped long enough to see the animals and be able to take pictures at a number of locations.

Historic Muskingum River "Y" Bridge

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Bridges
I just love the fact that we have a bridge in the shape of a y and the look on people's faces when you give them directions to turn right or turn left once they get to the middle of the bridge 😂
Deborah L — Google review
The only bridge like it in the World. Initially built in 1914 the Y shape was created to allow traffic heading East across the bridge to go either North or South as heading straight on would involve driving straight into a mountain. Aviators use this bridge for a reference point and famed pilot Amelia Earhart said it was the most recognizable city in America. This is a fifth generation bridge with the first being a trestle bridge and then a covered bridge. Before traffic lights were invented a traffic officer would be stationed in the center of the Y to direct traffic. It was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and on the National Register of Historic Places.
Scott — Google review
Only Y Bridge in the world. Had to drive it and take a walk. The water moves very swiftly over the dam and under the bridge. Love the impressive light poles. It looks good on the city of Zaynesville how well they have preserved this historic asset.
Martin C — Google review
Crossing the Y Bridge is a novel experience, both amusing and impressive at the same time. I have read that Amelia Earhart once remarked that it made Zanesville the most easily recognized city in the US from a pilot's point of view. Where else can you tell someone to drive to the middle of the bridge and turn left?
Jonny O — Google review

Awesome structure of a bridge. The 'Circle of Vases' or 'Vasehenge' was a bonus find down from the bridge - west main street and north pine!

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Tours
Scenic Railroads
Had a tour of the station and a ride on the train while visiting for the Ohio Museums Association conference. It was a great time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ride seemed very kid friendly and we got a great guided tour of the surrounding areas while I took the ride.

My husband and I went on the Fall Foliage train ride and it was beautiful. The views are amazing. The gift shop is very nice with different drinks and snacks you can bring aboard the train. Getting your tickets is easy and the train depot is really cool. The ride is very interesting and you learn about the history of the area. The only thing we didn't like was how packed each train car was and how close you were sitting to strangers. We got there 45 minutes early, 15 minutes before it said to arrive, and it was already packed. We had difficulty finding the seats we wanted. We rode on the open train car to enjoy the nice weather but we had to sit on a bench shoulder to shoulder next to other people. They definitely need to have a max capacity that allows people to have some space. They shouldn't allow us to have to be that cramped together. We definitely will arrive even earlier next time. Other than that, I recommend it.
Bryanna M — Google review
If you've never been on a train and want to say you have been, this is an inexpensive way of doing that. However, this is not what my friend and I had expected. The trip was not very "scenic" unless you enjoy seeing rundown backyards and trash piles. I understand the railway cannot control the public, but I wouldn't say this is scenic. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. The windows do not lock in place and can be dangerous. Several windows in the car we were in slammed shut from the vibrations of the train, thank goodness no one was hurt. The small town, can't remember the name, wasn't much to look at either and the "gift shop" there was a joke. But it was an inexpensive way to kill a couple of hours, just wouldn't do it again.
Sharina S — Google review
If you ever want to say you went on a train ride this is the perfect and inexpensive spot to do that. There were more views of people's backyards and work equipment than beautiful views but still really cool to see and do. The colors were beautiful since it was fall. We also stopped at a small village which was pretty cool.

Great fall day adventure at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Good size train and the vintage passenger cars from 1921 were well maintained. The volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They also offer Christmas and Easter time rides, as well as a New Years Eve celebration 🍾 ride. It is a non-profit organization, and they welcome donations in any amount to keep up with the maintenance.
Tim V — Google review
The experience wasn’t what I expected, especially with it being $85. I don’t want to be too harsh with my review, since I love that they provide this experience to the public. All the staff were friendly and seemed to enjoy being there! Inside of the trains were clean and they had a vintage feel. The seats were comfortable and had a lot of leg room. Like a lot of the other reviews, I also was disappointed and the views. You see a lot of run down housing and trash. I understand that Hocking Valley Scenic Railway cannot control this, but wanted others to make others aware that most of the sites are not attractive. The biggest disappointment to me was the re-enactments. We paid for a ride that included reenactments, but every single performance was performed at the back and since the performers did not have microphones we could not make out a single word that was being said. I think this should be taken into consideration for future rides. Maybe have them do one reenactment at the front, then one at the back, so all riders are included or even some type of microphone. Overall, it we are glad we did it since we had been wanting to for awhile, but it isn’t something we would go back for a second time.

We had a wonderful relaxing ride on the train. It was a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it making it a part of your visit to the area

The Dawes Arboretum

Arboretum
Nature & Parks
The Dawes Arboretum, established in 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, spans over 1,800 acres and features a historic home. The arboretum showcases various plant collections including crab apples, conifers, oaks, azaleas, and hollies. It offers a plethora of educational experiences and miles of trails for walking, driving or biking through beautiful landscaping and gardens.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Dawes Arboretum, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The sprawling 1,800-acre property offers a serene escape into nature, showcasing a diverse collection of beautiful trees, plants, and flowers meticulously curated for visitors to enjoy. The Arboretum's well-maintained walking trails allowed me to explore various themed gardens, each presenting its own unique charm. The Japanese Garden was particularly stunning, with its tranquil pond and traditional architectural elements creating a peaceful oasis. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, adding depth to my understanding of the plant species and conservation efforts. Additionally, the interactive exhibits in the visitor center were engaging and informative, making the trip both educational and enjoyable. Overall, The Dawes Arboretum is a fantastic destination for nature lovers and families alike, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and learning. Whether you're interested in horticulture or simply seeking a serene day out, this arboretum is a must-visit.

"Dawes Arboretum is an absolute treasure! Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll, a challenging hike, or a beautiful place to learn about nature, this place has it all. The diverse plant collections, including the stunning Japanese Garden and the unique cypress swamp, offer something new to discover with every visit. I especially love the auto tour for a relaxed experience, and climbing the observation tower for that amazing view of the hedge letters is a must. It's clear how much care goes into maintaining the grounds. A truly enriching and beautiful experience for all ages!"

My wife and I visited Columbus recently and I found out about this place after looking for something peaceful and pleasant to do outdoors on our way home as we always do on road trips. Before we stopped we had some idea of the scale of this place, but when we actually got there it was truly mind blowing. The grounds are so vast and so beautiful we spent the entire day and learned a lot about trees and the various plants. I also booked a tour of the house ahead of time. We learned a lot of history on the tour and our guide was extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. Plus the tour itself is very detailed and they show you more of the house than I was expecting (including an amazing surprise in the basement). I can’t recommend highly enough. It’s a lot of walking because the grounds cover thousands of acres all of which is absolutely stunning, so plan accordingly. There is also an “auto tour” around the arboretum, with places along the way to pull off and take in the sights and fresh air. It’s amazing the dedication and care that all of their marvelous staff puts into maintaining this treasure including past caretakers (who are thoughtfully and graciously memorialized in one of the outbuildings telling you about the history of the arboretum and the people who established it). Some of the cool things that we saw there have inspired us in our own gardening endeavors at home as well. We will be returning again and again! We absolutely LOVED The Dawes Arboretum. I told all of my family about it as well, because I think everyone should enjoy their splendid green spaces, fresh air, and tall trees (especially for how low the price of admission was). If you’re a tree lover, a gardener, or you just appreciate the great outdoors and aesthetic beauty in general, this is the place for you. Actually it’s the place for everybody, because it is impossible not to find peace, tranquility, and harmony while strolling their forested trails and beautiful gardens. We could all use some of that in our lives and the Dawes Arboretum certainly provides.

We are traveling in the area. Decided to check this place out. So happy we did. I know we missed things. So we will be back here before we leave. They have paved and dirt trails. Have a little gift shop. Employees were very knowledgeable and helpful. Plenty of parking.

A naturalist led the Mushroom Walk. She was knowledgeable and nice. My son really wanted to know which mushrooms were edible and she answered all his questions. Once she said to ID a fungus property would take some more work and I thought that was respectable for a walk without tools etc. The bathrooms at the gift shop / discovery center were clean. The trails were well maintained and the discovery center was interesting and designed with kids in mind.

10/20/2024 - My family and I visited The Dawes Arboretum over the weekend. It was amazing and an unforgettable experience. There are about 12-14 miles to hike on their beautiful scenic area. You may also drive through The Dawes Arboretum where vehicles are permitted. There are all types of trees, plants, flowers, and a few wildlife. Every path you encounter and every step you take is a scene. You will also see artistry within the arboretum. There are designated parking lots throughout the arboretum for you to park and get out to explore. Per the staff member/greeter at the entrance, it is about 12-14 miles of a hike to see the entire Arboretum. There are also educational facilities within the arboretum along with a visitor center, and museum. You may bring your four-legged friends. Family space to make memories with nature. Nice and friendly staff. Cost to enter is 10.00. Enjoy.

Cantwell Cliffs

Hiking area

Geologic Formations
Known for its deep valleys, high cliffs & rock shelter, this park area includes vast hiking trails.
What a amazing hike! I read about this place, it was on my to visit list. I used garmin to get to the area. Garmin had no problems finding the place. I also used google maps as a back-up to verify the address. No too many cars in the parking area. Spaces for about 30 or so cars. I saw a few people coming back, and a few heading out. Young and not so young, even a few little ones. The trail is one way. The trail covers a mile or so. Right a the start we saw the cliffs! Wow!! The trail can be difficult, narrow passage way, a lot of steps up and down
Walter M — Google review
A short but difficult hike. Absolutely wonderful scenery with many unique experiences. In just over one mile the elevation changes over 400 feet. There are many steps and inclined trails. The trails are well-maintained and marked. One-way trails for safety. Take good footwear and a light pack with extra water.
Tyler C — Google review
This is such a beautiful area and hike, and different from the other hikes we did in the area. I would suggest using the navigation on Alltrails app, as it was a bit confusing for us to stay on the trail. We made it through the whole way, but at times we were not on the trail, as there are parts that look like trails but are not part of the trail. Following the app navigation helps! The path we took made it more strenuous but it is a beautiful place! We had adults down to a 3 year old and we all enjoyed it.

Cantwell Cliffs is a rewarding and rugged hiking experience in Hocking Hills. Unlike other spots, it feels more remote and wild. You can choose a high trail for stunning views or a lower gorge trail that takes you past towering rock walls and through the famous "Fat Woman's Squeeze." The mix of steep stairs, serene creeks, and beautiful waterfalls makes it a truly special and unforgettable hike for those looking for a challenge.
Brandon — Google review
This was a pretty cool hike. It definitely has some rugged terrain which i would say makes it more difficult than some other hikes in the area but I also think it made it more fun than some of the other hikes as well. It was far less busy as well which was nice. I would definitely recommend this hike . Could be a little difficult for kids.
Derrick H — Google review
It was right after it rained so the steps were slippery but it was absolutely beautiful and worth the hike! Would love to go again! I also went at 630am and i only saw 2 other people.
Samantha A — Google review
This is an amazing trail; highly recommend. Side notes: it has lots of "steps" that are "iffy." So you need to make your own steps to be safe... stay on or close to the trail. This was a challenging trail for me (I am 50 years old and have a fear of heights, with minor claustrophobia... and apparently out of shape). My hubby led the way and our 11 yo twins conquered with some iffiness in various areas.

Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Tree-lined hiking trails along sandstone cliffs or at the foot of a gorge dotted with waterfalls.
Do not miss this wonderful nature preserve in Hocking Hills. This short trail is accessible for almost anyone , even most of the "trail" ( mostly a paved path ) is smooth and level. Spectacular scenery. The parking lot does get crowded, which underscores just how unique this place is. Still, we found a spot and enjoyed the experience.
Steve K — Google review
We hiked the 2 mile rim trail in the early afternoon and the shorter gorge trail later in the day close to 6 pm. I would consider the rim trail moderate difficulty but if you have any knee issues be mindful there are a lot of rock and steps to climb, but roots that will trip you up which makes it more strenuous. The vista views on the rim were amazing and you really appreciate the height if you do the gorge trail after. It was a lovely woodsy hike and a small doe was eating nearby. The gorge trail was stunning especially when the sun is going down. It’s a super easy walk perfect for families.
Nicole R — Google review
This is a great hike in the Hocking Hills region. The main trail though the gorge is wheelchair accessible, except for the final part to the waterfall. There was definitely a small crowd, so don't expect to feel isolated. The hike around the gorge is also great! Some very incredible views. The fall foliage was amazing. There is an old CCC cabin just over halfway through the trail, which was cool. There are numerous displays that explain the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the region.
Nathan W — Google review
A fantastic preserve. The gorge trail is absolutely beautiful. There are many wondrous natural features to see. The trail is nearly fully accessible. The final section to the falls is an easy and very short hike. Definitely make time for this one if you are in the area. We did not hike the Rim Trail.
Tyler C — Google review
We took the lower, easier trail with a 7, 5, 4, and 2 two year olds. It was a very nice and easy trail most of the way back. At some point it goes from paved to not paved. That was a little more challenging with the younger kids, but so worth it at the end. It is very flat with beautiful scenery. I highly recommend to everyone looking for something doable with children. Just beware about 80% of the way it changes.
Eric F — Google review
The rim trail, at a moderate 2 1/2 miles, is lovely. It starts with SEVERAL steps straight up, with a couple landings to rest. The scenery is beautiful, however we were there after a lot wind over night, that blew down a lot of the colorful leaves. Still it was a beautiful hike. Highly recommended. They also have 1/2 mile wheelchair accessible trail that runs down the middle of the gorge.
Barry K — Google review
Complete trail completed in about 2 hours. Younger hikers would probably take less time. Hiking boots or shoes that can grip recommended. Many steps to get to top and some dirt trail that can be slippery on the way down. Since August is dryer month there were no water falls visible. Views are wonderful. Make sure to turn around to see the views behind you. I would not recommend taking little children as there are many non guarded drop offs.
Barbara S — Google review
This was 2nd time visiting. The walk through the gorge is really easy, paved most of the way. I have not done the upper rim hike. It is a nice walk, totally recommended if you are in the area.

Slate Run Living Historical Farm

Farm
Sights & Landmarks
Met Officer Mark today; thank you for counting to enjoy what you do! My love for the State of Ohio goes pretty deep, rooted here if you will. Slate Run is worth every trip.
C M — Google review
I've been to Slate run many times, with and without my family. It has been an enjoyable experience until this visit. Our family decided to go to get our holiday photos for a card. The kids sat on fences and in front of barns. The big work horses were brought out and the site volunteer mocked is for being on the hog fence, as we were going to get manure on us. There wasn't any manure near and no signs to let us know to avoid this particular fence. It was done for a laugh from the small audience watching the horses. The volunteer ruined the morning for my kids who were very embarrassed and wanted to immediately leave. Shame on you and your assinine behavior to children.
Regina P — Google review
Such a cute family experience! The male farmer was very kind and asked us if we had any questions and told us a little about his job. We couldn’t access the pig area due to it being overrun with a hornets nest but we peaked inside. They display a lot of neat old farm equipment. Everything has signage if necessary and it’s very well maintained.
Taylor H — Google review
I think the first time I visited the working historical farm was in 1989. It is a true gem and Ohio treasure! It's a self guided tour while volunteers work the many aspects of the farm! All buildings (there are a LOT) are marked and you can follow the map. There is an alphabetized map for kids (as and adults) and so much to see and learn. No two days are the same! Plenty of parking and new restrooms! The work horses were being used today! So very much to see and it's very much like stepping back in time! In addition, I cannot say enough good things about the farm manager Ann, and her entire staff!! They work very hard physically and they are a wealth of information of how farms operated over a century ago. Kudos to all and thank you for allowing future generations to get a priceless look back in time!!
Barb F — Google review
What a wonderful place this is! My daughter and I truly enjoyed the opportunity to step back into history and learn about the 1880s farm life. It brought me a lot of nostalgia when I remembered my Grandmother and Grandfather's farm from when I was a little girl. It was a lot like this farm. They have many hands on interactive learning areas that my daughter loved especially. Definitely worth the trip! We will be going back in the spring to see the planting season.
Kara B — Google review
Truly a peaceful and wonderful experience that really reminds you to slow down and experience everything. Such a beautiful place.
Daniel V — Google review
This is a very “real” working farm, filled with tons of opportunities to learn and explore, from the orchard to the smoke house and root cellar, to the barn and main house filled with period pieces. This is a great place for kids to get hands on experience with some farm animals. One note: the park employees in this area are in historical dress, but are not historical actors/interpreters. That said - they were very friendly and filled with great info!

What an amazing place! Came by on a warm and sunny day and were blown away by how gorgeous the grounds are. We saw staff working on stuff everywhere. As someone who has a hard time walking distances, I was pleasantly surprised to be offered an electrical scooter at no charge to help get around. The place is very large and clearly marked for what plants are where and also how to avoid staircases. Volunteers were very evident and were obviously happy to be there. Wonderful place to spend time.

I felt the price was about $5 to high. However, we booked for 5:30 entry and it was still daylight and have to have the children home at a certain time so they didn’t get to see the cool stuff come to life til we left. I understand it’s a wedding venue as I got married there at Christmas time. So we missed out on seeing the Palm house. Not spooky at all. Great for kids of all ages. Just wish the prices were lower so even the kids that come from low income families could enjoy it too.

There are many exhibits to explore. The dinosaur & shark exhibits were great to see, as they had life size models on display & it was very informative. The Ocean exhibit was fun because you can go into a real submarine & there is an interactive water room. One of the best things about the museum is how many hands on things there are to do. It's definitely a great place for all ages.

The visit was amazing! We visited for the Unofficial Galaxies event since we are huge Star Wars fans. The event was spectacular with a ton of really insane exhibits that were mostly fan made. We were absolutely thrilled to see all of the handmade items and pieces from the films. We recommend buying tickets in advance. Also the military discount here is only $2 but still worth it.

Pixar was worth it for us. Our kids from 8-16 had a blast getting drawn into the animation process for at least 90 minutes then spent another couple of hours exploring, playing and creating. The older kids had been to Cosi before but had a genuinely good time taking it all in again, they also thoroughly enjoyed shocking each other in the energy section. Even some of the discovery and play areas were surprisingly fun and interesting.

Coming from out of town, looking to kill some time, it did not disappoint!Cool science center. There were tons of day camp kids running wild, but that can be expected on a weekday morning in the summer. Very cool hands on stuff for kids. The natural history exhibits were cool, along with the Town of Progress exhibit. Would definitely recommend if you are in the Columbus area.

I don’t see many reviews talking about amazing the little kids area upstairs is! 1st grade and under I believe was the age range. My kiddos will spend hours just in that area alone. Dramatic play , water play, art room, wooden train /soft play, and play construction vehicles . Find on street parking for a cheaper rate than the garage.

Wow! Just a beautiful place to take the family. The exhibits are amazing. Every time we go the Dinosaur exhibit just keeps on expanding. Just truly an amazing place and I myself learn so much. Highly recommend going especially when they change out the featured exhibits.

This place is so worth it. For only $30 bucks we got over 3 hours of fun and useful information about the world we live in. We visited the planetarium twice for two films that were incredible and at no extra charge. You definitely can make a whole days worth out of this museum. I also enjoyed that it’s not only child oriented but also includes stuff for adults to do. Also don’t forget to check out the shows they do during the day. We got to see rats play basketball! My one and only complaint about this place is I wish there were more cool shirts in the gift shop for adults! (All the cool ones are for the kids)

I finally made it here after knowing about it for more than 20 years and it was totally worth it. I teared up a little when I first walked i to the dinosaur room. Seriously so amazing to see. And I was in awe of the beauty in the Poseidon room. I think that might have been my favorite. An incredible experience for sure. Absolutely worth a visit!

Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center - Mound City Group

Mentioned on

Park
Sights & Landmarks
When visiting Chillicothe, Ohio, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center is an essential stop for anyone interested in the rich history of the region. This park showcases the Mound City Group, which consists of 23 impressive earthen mounds constructed by the Hopewell culture between 200 BC and 500 AD. These mounds served important ceremonial purposes and offer a fascinating insight into the complex social and spiritual lives of the Hopewell people.
Despite the heat, this is still one of our favourite places to visit in OH! Sun umbrellas were offered for our use as we walked the site. Clearly marked trails, mowed grass make for an easy walk. Plan on spending at least a couple of hours if you can!
Jess B — Google review
The Hopewell Culture and Visitor Center is a smaller center. It does have some souvenirs and you can get your passport stamps here. There is a slight walkthrough in the center to see all the different Earth mounds and a video to watch. They also have all of the different flags for the Indian Nations and a small description for each. You can then walk out of the back of the Visitor Center when done looking at the displays. You will immediately see the mounds as soon as you walk out. You're also able to walk around the entire area.
Daniel G — Google review
What an incredible historical site! A great little museum/history center of the Hopewell culture as well as local life through the years. The building is completely handicapped accessible, and it's mostly a flat grassy area for the rest of the place. Give yourself about an hour. Worth a visit!

Everyone should come enjoy this small national park! You won't spend an awful lot of time here, so it's even good for kids. The workers at the information desk are friendly and have lots of information and pamphlets to give you. There are many mounds here, and some of them have information signs explaining their significance. There's plenty of parking and clean restrooms here.
Thirteendays — Google review
This park is really impressive. The mounds are amazing. There is a small visitors center with video and a gift shop. There are trails outside with different information boards to read. I have very limited mobility and get around on an electric scooter. I could go as far as the sidewalk. They did have an off road wheel chair that you can borrow to go on the trails. That was really nice to see.

This was my first visit to this National Historic Park area. Excellent presentation of indigenous (native) peoples ingenuity and sophisticated culture before the Europeans arrived. The Mound City group is just one of several sites in the newly designated World Cultural Heritage area. Make sure you see this and the other sites to truly experience the mounds and other earthworks of the Hopewell culture that flourished in the central and southern Ohio landscape.

I stopped by her after visiting Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers. This place has a lot of hidden history going back 2000 uests. Thete are 22 mounds here of differemt sizes and some of different shapes. When here walk the signage trail ti the river and read all the signs. The place is free.

Visited 7/11/23 The National Park Service manages several Hopewell mound sites in the Chillicothe area. The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park's visitor center is located at Mound City Group and is the only site that has a full facility with a museum, gift store, restrooms and helpful rangers. Despite this site's name "Mound City Group", this site was not a residential area but rather a burial and ceremonial ground. Anyone fascinated with ancient mounds and earthworks needs to visit this site. And if your travel plans include seeing all the earthworks in the Chillicothe area, see this one first to give you a better understanding of what you will be seeing at some of the other sites where the earthworks no longer exist but are only outlined by mowing the grass on the ground where they once stood. The museum and park rangers will also provide valuable information about the people who created and utilized these structures. We arrived around 3pm and were told that we could join a ranger led tour that started shortly after. Ranger Sue was so informative! I learned so much!

Adena Mansion & Gardens Historic Site

Mentioned on

Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
Adena Mansion & Gardens Historic Site is a significant estate in Chillicothe, Ohio, originally belonging to Thomas Worthington, the state's sixth governor. The mansion was completed in 1807 and has been meticulously restored to reflect its original appearance when the Worthington family lived there. The tour of this historic site provides an immersive experience, guided by knowledgeable historians who share insights into the family's life and the region's history during the 1800s.
This place is great for those who appreciate early Ohio history. It gives us a slice of how Ohio became a state and how Thomas Worthington was instrumental during the process. The house was constructed by Thomas Worthington around 1803 and still stands in much the same way it did then. They have a museum that gives great background on the Worthington family and a house tour that last about 45 minutes. The grounds are beautiful and you can view the overlook that the Ohio State Seal was derived from. Tickets are $12 per person and well worth every penny! We have a rich history in Ohio and this place is a hidden gem right in our backyard!

My 9 year old daughter and I toured the house and museum today. Quoting my daughter, "I LOVED it!" The grounds are beautiful, the house is so well preserved and the museum is interactive. Our tour guide was fantastic and really knowledgeable yet even kept a 9 year olds attention for an hour and half. Great place to check out to learn more about Ohio's early history.

Nice visitor center with artifacts and great information on the history of the house and land. Tour guide was nice and very knowledgeable. Wish the garden area and grounds had been more kept up but they were working on it.
Carol S — Google review
Disappointing experience. I was so pumped to see a key piece of Ohio history, but I knew something was up when I saw a handful of people standing outside the visitor center. I looked through the doors to see that it was locked due to giving a guided tour, and a note said they'd be back soon (not a set time). I wonder if it was ultimately due to staffing issues After giving it some time, it was clear that I could not tour the mansion in my allotted timeframe, so I drove to the overlook, took in the Great Seal, and left. For such an important part of our state's history, this is unacceptable and the people of Ohio deserve better.

I toured this with a group. It was lovely. Beautiful! The tour was a lot of walking and stairs. It was worth it, but gosh.
Rhonda E — Google review
Wonderful visitor center with child friendly museum exhibits and clean restrooms greet you at Adena. The mansion tour is extremely interesting with the history of the Worthington family, several Ohio governors, two American presidents, and the Shawnee war chief Tecumseh interwoven with the history of the collections and the mansions architects and builders.

Took a mini vaca this week while kids were on fall break and went to hocking hills. Stayed in the Marriott in Chillicothe. During our stay the hotel worker suggested we check out this place. Didn’t really know anything about this place or that it even existed so we took the suggestion and went not really knowing what to expect. We went on Thursday. So glad we did! The tour was excellent and we learned so much that we didn’t really know before. Just being on the grounds that significant historical figures like Tecumseh once graced with their presence is something else! I came not really knowing who Thomas Worthington was and left knowing a whole lot more! Of course I had heard of Tecumseh and just knowing he stayed here is reason enough to come! Much of the house is original including much of the floors and the pave stones outside. They have a museum with the actual peace pipe tomahawk Tecumseh gave to Worthington as a symbol of peace, which is really cool! So you do timed guided tours and fyi the last tour before lunch is 11:30 and then tours resume at 1:30. I got there right at 11:30 and had to wait until 1:30. That’s ok because there are things you do on your own like explore the museum, barn, garden, so we were able to fill the time. They don’t have food except a couple snack items in gift shop so don’t come hungry. The tour guide was great and very informative and gave plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Beware that the house is very cold. Wear long sleeves or layers. They are unable to change the temperature. Didn’t really get a clear cut answer why the house is so cold other than that it’s cold and they can’t change the temperature. I asked if it’s haunted but the tour guide swears it’s not. Hmmmmm….. Either way this is a great little day thing to do with your kids and family, friends, or even alone and gives you the opportunity to step back in time!

Rocky Fork State Park

Lake-based activities lure boaters & campers to this 1,300-acre expanse with wildlife-rich wetlands.
Planning to come back in the Fall. Very relaxing and well laid out. Food/store is about 15 minutes away. You have to drive to the trails. Tons of fishing areas. Lots of playgrounds. The check-in has bait, clothes, toys, fishing equipment, ice cream, etc.

We had a good weekend trip to the park. I was pleased with the group spot and other facilities at the park campgrounds. The shower facilities were a bit of a miss. Using the group space was nice, there were even pads for two RVs and extra hookups for power, if you need it. Lots of space for our 20 people, and we could have easily doubled that with room to still hang out. The playground, mini golf, and Frisbee golf are all nice features, but a bit basic. The kids had fun, which is what's important. He mindful of the sun, there's little cover on them so the kids will bake. The movie night was a nice idea, but it started at 9:00 so it was dark enough. Unfortunately the kids were worn out and only two made it through the show. Also, someone decided to light up a cigarette nearby, which bothered a few of them. It was nice having the shop walking distance away for basics you forgot or broke. The shower facilities need repairs. Warning to the guys, as of our visit, shower house #1, shower stall all the way down only does scalding hot water - it's being reported to the park services. Other guests were pretty decent. There's always a few in that dense of an area, but the group grounds we had were more isolated so you didn't have people walking through or close to your space, which was nice. Sunday a few bugged out at 05:00, but the we're as quiet as their turbo diesels could be. For camping, it has a lot of good options if you want to go and chill. There's better spots if you want hiking, but the lake has options to rent boats and stuff. The beach a mile or two down the road is sand on shore, then rocks and mussels so water shoes will come in handy. Worth the trip!

Spent a night here in late September 25'. It was great. Quiet, the temperature was hot during the day and cool at night. The gift shop had a lot of stuff. The grounds were well kept and the employees were very helpful. Definitely want to stay here again.

What an amazing park. The back country camp sites are well appointed be prepared to hike and watch for food due to the high bear activity. And remember leave no trace The water is beautiful as well and some secret trails to a climbing area exist but you probably won’t find em. Camp sites have composting toilets and bear boxes

Camped for four nights. The campground has very spacious sites in some areas. Grassy areas are uneven and you really have to watch your step! The campground offered nothing in terms of activities, so if you’re going to; be prepared to make your own fun. Camp store is well stocked and offers hand-dipped ice cream.
Dana W — Google review
Nice park. Camping was decent. Pretty crowded and busy. Sites are fairly spacious, but are also packed in. Didn't experience the lake much, but did try some fishing. Unfortunately no luck there. Barely had a few bites. We had site 47, which was decent, but wish we had sites on the other side of the road (44 seemed much nicer and private - backed up against the woods). Restrooms were very clean and the showers were nice, too. Just wish the sites afforded a little more privacy.
Keith J — Google review
This is a large state park that has all of the amenities that you would expect from a larger state park minus a lodge. The lake and the surrounding areas are very scenic. As other reviews have mentioned, there isn't many trails. Other than that it's a great state park.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House

The Westcott House, a prairie-style home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has been restored and transformed into a museum. The architect's emphasis on integrating nature into the living space is evident in the design, with windows strategically placed to offer views of the surrounding park. The house features a reflecting pool and showcases Wright's favorite color, Cherokee Red, on its brick patio and fabric awning. Visitors can explore the history of the house and its former occupants through informative tours led by knowledgeable guides.
We had a friend come into town for the week and used that opportunity to go see this wonderful house. It starts off with a little movie, and a tour director takes you around the home. The director was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the history and restoration of the house. The architecture of this home is neat to see and experience the genius of the design. He used sunlight to his advantage to bring light into rooms in a spiceal way. The wood working on the built-in cabinets is amazing, and the layout is very clever. Taking into consideration the age, there is no accommodation for wheelchairs. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in homes of this style. Our tour took about an hour and a half and was well worth the price. I am now wanting to travel to other similar homes in Ohio to continue to see this master's work.

Well restored Frank Lloyd Wright work. Reasonably priced 1.5 hour tours of the building are available almost every day at multiple times. Gift shop and parking available. Would recommend as a day trip. We had a great time and learned a lot about the house, the family, and the architect.

Fascinating Frank Lloyd Wright house. Tours are scheduled, so buy tickets online and in advance. 90 minute tour is interesting whether you are a Wright expert or this is your first tour. Plenty of details and information about him and the house. The tour is required to see inside the house. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Brad W — Google review
Incredible tour with a super knowledgeable guide. Our guide packed so much information into our 90 minute tour-it was amazing. She gave us a history of the home and really shined a spotlight on the amazing restoration work that had been done. Would highly recommend for anyone with even a passing interest in architecture or design.

We loved it! The tour guide made the whole visit. He clearly knew a lot about the house and FLW. You can tell he really loves sharing this with people and that really made it special. The house is beautiful and lovingly restored. You really get the feel that FLW was going for in this house. The gift shop is full of all sorts of fun things. I definitely want to go back for Christmas presents! This is not handicap accessible. There are multiple sets of stairs and no elevator.

Hidden gem in a diamond in the rough city. Springfield has such a rich architectural and cultural legacy, and it shines still despite economic downturns and negative news coverage. Don’t sleep on the Westcott House! It is a magnificent experience from start to end. Our tour guide was dynamic and super knowledgeable, and kept the entire tour engaging with captivating details.

Was not our first FLW tour … won’t be our last either. The docent spent over an hour and a half with our small group of 5. Very in depth tour and fascinating to hear about all the efforts (and successes) that went into renovations. Sort of a must do if you’re a fan of his style.

Young's Jersey Dairy is a multifaceted destination that offers an array of experiences for visitors. As a working dairy farm, it features a renowned ice cream shop known as the Dairy Store, which is celebrated for serving some of Ohio's finest milkshakes. Families can enjoy various activities such as mini-golf, batting cages, and opportunities to interact with animals like goats and cows during milking hours. The on-site Golden Jersey Inn restaurant provides delicious meals.
We had a wonderful experience here! I really appreciate that there’s no admission fee, allowing you to simply pay for the activities you choose—and the prices are very reasonable. The ice cream was absolutely delicious, and our kids had such a great time. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for families to relax and enjoy themselves.

The food is ok, definitely could use some flavor. In my opinion it wasn't worth the price. The ice cream and cheese curds are good. They now have rides but I have two kids with a significant age gap. I was told my older child couldn't go in the play area that my younger child could go ( one of the few things he could do there). There was only one thing they could do together. So we weren't able to do much and it was very disappointing. The kids enjoyed the animals though.

I had an absolute blast here!!! I went for the first time the other day and who knew all the awesomeness that was there to experiance! A Carousel, Feeding Goats, All the pumpkins you can imagine, and not to mention the delicious Ice Cream!! 10/10 Recommend!

Such a fun fall activity! We got the adult wristbands and did the cornmaze, wagon ride, carousel, put put, and driving range. A very fun way to spend time with friends! (There is a foul smell on the right side of the farm due to sewage water they use to water their Christmas trees…so consider that).

I haven’t been here in years and it’s changed so much but is still great! The food is wonderful and the staff are so kind. It gets busy but there are plenty of places to sit. Renaissance Park

Event venue
It's a feast for the senses! Food, people, period, costumes, atmosphere, music, attitude, comedy, shopping, and a whole lot of fun for all ages. It offers a small relief from the modern social media age to one of more simple times. Pirates, vikings, fairies, and throw in some Star Wars for good measure. There's no shying away from costumes. Bring cash and a sense of whimsy and enjoy! Yes, you'll spend some serious change but it's all in good fun. ~$40 entry fee, $12 fish and chips, $12 meat on a stick, $12 Dole Whip in a cup, $5 pickle, etc etc etc... it adds up quick. But you're not here for value, you're here for experiences - and that's what you'll get!

Most amazing time!!! My 2 year old and 8 year old enjoyed it all day with all the different things to see and shows! It was so fun showing off our costumes and admiring all the other festival goers as well. If the cost of tickets is holding you back, splurge, we did and didn’t regret it! Will definitely go again next year :)

Insanely huge and well done Faire full of loads of fun things to do for the whole family. Don’t expect modern rides or attractions. It’s all things you’d find from the period (with a few modern conveniences like bathrooms and garbage cans!). If you have costumes, wear them. More than half the people attending are fully decked out.

Always an amazing time. Fantasy weekend is my favorite. The food went up this year 17.50 for a burger and 7.50 to add fries. We ate when we left but dole whip is a good snack or cheesecake on a stick.

We came here for the Celtic festival, and love the atmosphere. Road was clearly marked, huge sign out on the road. The buildings were on point Renaissance themed. Parking on grass but a high hill so even after rain it wasn't muddy. Bathrooms were not outhouses, real running toilets which is surprising at a festival, this one is permanent. It's a fun place whatever event they are having. Also in early June, the Cicadas were EVERYWHERE, which made it interesting, a community togetherness when everyone was covering their drinks and batting at and catching them 😂😆 Even the bands were remarking how loud they were! But it added to the fun.

The National Museum of the US Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is a sprawling aviation museum that first opened in 1923. It boasts an impressive collection of about 360 aircraft and weaponry, making it the largest military aviation museum globally. The museum offers various attractions such as flight simulators, a 3D theater, and war-themed exhibits.
Absolutely incredible experience. A museum like no other I've ever been to before in my life. I was super stoked to see the SR-71 and the Air Force one plane that JFK used. What an experience and I wouldn't change a thing. The main key is being able to interact with so many of the aircraft and my little guy loved being able to climb into cockpit and pretend he was a fighter pilot. The missile silo was huuuuge and nothing like I've ever seen before. The staff and volunteers were very nice and interactive as well. We were able to come on a random week day when it wasn't busy so we were able to enjoy ourselves without huge crowds. We will definitely be back!!

Great air and history museum! You could easily spend an entire day here. Great historical explanations surrounding the exhibits and very organized. We've been there several times with the kids through the years and always had a great time. Most recently, my daughter and I visited during a "plane talk" event and were able to meet several retired members of the flight crew of different aircraft. Highly recommend!
Stacy F — Google review
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is truly one of the most impressive museums I’ve ever visited — and the fact that it’s completely free makes it even more unbelievable. The size of the place is massive, and each hangar takes you deeper into the history of aviation, space exploration, and the U.S. Air Force’s role around the world. The exhibits are incredibly well-organized, starting from early flight history and leading all the way to modern jets, stealth aircraft, and even space capsules. Walking through the hangars feels like stepping through different eras — from WWII bombers to Cold War jets to presidential aircraft. Seeing Air Force One up close and being able to walk inside some of the planes is such a unique experience. Every area is spotless and very well-maintained, and the amount of information available is impressive without being overwhelming. There’s something for everyone — whether you love military history, aviation technology, or just want to see some amazing aircraft in person. The staff and volunteers are also very friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate, which adds so much to the visit. You can easily spend several hours here without even realizing how much time has passed. The museum is perfect for families, tourists, history lovers, and honestly anyone who enjoys seeing something truly extraordinary. This is without a doubt one of Dayton’s biggest treasures, and a must-visit destination for anyone in the area.
Unal G — Google review
Aviation history at its finest—absolutely world-class. This museum is a national treasure. From the Wright brothers to stealth bombers, the scale and depth of the exhibits are staggering. Four massive hangars packed with legendary aircraft, including the X-15, SR-71, and the B-29 that dropped the second atomic bomb. You can even walk through presidential planes like the one Lyndon Johnson was sworn in on. One of the most compelling exhibits is the story of “Flying the Hump”—the daring WWII airlift over the Himalayas to resupply Chinese forces after the Japanese cut off the Burma Road. Pilots flew from India to China through brutal weather, 18,000-foot altitudes, and zero navigation aids. It was dubbed the “Skyway to Hell”, and rightly so: over 500 aircraft were lost, and more than 1,300 crew members perished. Yet this mission was vital to keeping China in the fight and ultimately helped turn the tide in the Pacific Theater. The layout is intuitive, the signage is clear, and the staff—many of them veterans—are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. Best part? Admission is free. You could easily spend a full day here (or several) and still not see everything. Whether you're an aerospace engineer, a military buff, or just curious about flight, this place will leave you inspired. One of the best museums in the country, hands down.
Jacques L — Google review
If you like airplanes and history, this is probably the best collection you'll ever see, minus the Smithsonian. Tons of interactive exhibits, for all ages. The volunteers are all super nice, especially the tour guides, and speak from a wealth of knowledge that's irreplaceable.

I cannot rate this place high enough! We had a pre-planned business event here with a catered lunch. We had the museum to ourselves (a group of 30 or so) due to the furlough, but they were able to accommodate us for the afternoon. I am a Navy Vet (specifically naval aviation) and history fanatic so I got to be a huge nerd and had a blast! They let us ride the scooters through the museum since they hadn’t been used in a while. And it was amazing seeing all these planes close up and to be able to read the history! I already want to plan a trip back, because I don’t think I even saw a fraction of what this place holds!!

So glad we took the time to visit this place. It costs nothing to go in, and there's so much to see and do. My toddler had a great time getting to see everything. They also have several planes you get to go inside of or sit in the cockpit of. There are also several interactive exhibits that are great for kids. Overall, it's an amazing display of an important part of history, while also preserving it all exceptionally well.
Ronald K — Google review
Must-visit for any plane enthusiast. Didn't have as much time as would be needed to take everything in fully, but that was ok because admission is free, and I still got to see what I had hoped to. Only thing missing I would have liked to see was a C-5, but other than that they have all the sought after aircraft in the USAF fleet, including things like a B-2 and SR-71.

Charleston Falls Preserve

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Nestled in the heart of Miami County, Charleston Falls Preserve is a stunning 216-acre park that beautifully blends prairies and forests. This beloved destination features an array of hiking trails suitable for all skill levels, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature at their own pace. The highlight of the preserve is undoubtedly its namesake waterfall, a charming 37-foot cascade affectionately known as Miniature Niagara.
Great spot for a short hike to just enjoy nature for a while. The trail is very well maintained and well marked. Beautiful waterfall. It is a bit steep near the waterfall, so maybe not ideal for anyone with knee trouble. Even the restrooms were clean and well kept. Only downside for me was that it was pretty busy when I visited - I guess its popularity speaks for itself!

This is now officially one of my most favorite places to go, there is so much to see, the trails are kept VERY nicely, not to mention how awesome it is to explore, several locations to see within them as well. If you have not been here I HIGHLY suggest it for the entire family, you will not regret the beauty of nature within!!
Justin G — Google review
It was a great walk with multiple levels of difficulty. There's a stoned and wide path with other trails leading off that are more rugged. There's a nice grassed grotto section.
J N — Google review
This place is absolutely gorgeous! We went with our 3 year old and 1 year old and because I thought I had seen a review that said it was *mostly* stroller friendly, we brought the stroller. It is not stroller friendly! I repeat: NOT stroller friendly! At least not if you want to go down to the falls, which is kind of the whole point. There are several flights of stairs to go down and then back up across a bridge, then a path upwards that has large rocks in the path that cannot be traversed with a stroller. We ended up folding it up and carrying it until we got to the top and smooth sailing (pebble gravel). Without the stroller, my 3 year old would have had a hard time going as far as we did though, so there were pros and cons to it. When we got to the top of the trail after the falls, the path to the left, which goes down steeply, took us to a little spot where we put our feet in and threw some rocks. Not sure if we were supposed to be in the water, but there weren't any signs saying not to... And it was the highlight of our trip! My son lives for throwing rocks into water and this was better than any amusement park for him ☺️

What a gem!!! My husband and son surprised me with a Mother's Day hike here. It doesn't look like it's going to be much by the basic parking lot, simple restroom, and minimal signage...but it was a "real" hike with a beautiful waterfall. Lots of hidden extras along the way, too.
Martha S — Google review
Well kept trails, mostly graveled, some of the more likely wet parts are equipped with ramps. Park features waterfalls, creeks, rock formations, and a lake. Trails are of moderate difficulty, mostly flat, but there are steps and low grade downs and ups. Plenty of parking. Bathrooms available.
Gianluca B — Google review
With all the rain we have been having(July 2025), I thought the falls would have been flowing, but as you can see, I was wrong. LOL, but still a nice place for hiking.
Misty H — Google review
A real gem of a nature preserve park. Free admission, 8 AM until sun set. Ample parking. Nice restroom. Relaxing trails with hills. Dogs welcome but must be on leash, and have droppings picked up. Falls were dry today due to draught, and the creeks were low, but the park is still beautiful.

Carillon Historical Park is a 65-acre open-air museum in Ohio that offers visitors a journey through Dayton's rich history, inventions, and transportation milestones. Established in 1940, the park showcases the region's heritage from its founding in 1796 to contributions during World War II.
Such an awesome place! You'll be doing a lot of walking, but it's worth it. There's a lot of cool stuff to see! Be sure to ride the train! It takes you around the whole park and gives you some interesting historical facts. Definitely a fun place for kids too! If it's a weekend or special event, I'd purchase your tickets online beforehand. Plenty of parking, staff is nice and the food at the cafe is pretty good! Get the pancakes 👌🏼

Lots of different and unique displays many dealing with Dayton history and manufacturing. There were displays that interest kiddos of all ages. There is a half scale train that was running every hour, a tube slide and a carousel. There was an enormous display of cash register and some toys manufactured in the area. An interactive model train town was very popular. Various displays of trains, Street cars, bicycles, early cars, and Wright brothers and birth of flight.

Wonderful place to go and spend the day learning and reminiscing about Dayton and all its contributions. Brought back so many memories and was able to tell grandkids about the places. So many neat things to see and learn about. They do a great job of restoring and maintaining the vast museum items and artifacts. They even have a working carousel and train, and you can’t forget about the working printing press. They have a great section about the devastating 1913 flood. This place is to be enjoyed by young and old alike. And if you’re adventurous enough, climb the 8 story tower that holds the old Gem City clock. So much to see.

A must-visit gem in Dayton! Carillon Historical Park is one of the most impressive and well-designed historical sites I’ve ever visited. It perfectly blends education, history, and nature — making it enjoyable for both adults and kids. From the moment you enter, you can tell how much care and effort has gone into preserving Dayton’s incredible history, especially its deep connection to innovation and aviation. The exhibits are fascinating — especially the Wright Brothers section, which gives you a real sense of how much Dayton contributed to the world of flight. The Carillon Tower itself is breathtaking, both in scale and in the way it symbolizes the city’s heritage. I also loved exploring the old buildings, vintage trolleys, and beautifully restored machinery — it truly feels like stepping back in time. The park grounds are beautifully maintained, with peaceful walking paths, scenic spots for photos, and plenty of benches to relax. The staff and volunteers are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do — they make the history come alive. Don’t miss the Brewery and the Carillon Brewing Co., where you can enjoy excellent food and locally brewed beer in a historical atmosphere — it’s such a unique experience! Whether you’re a history lover, an aviation enthusiast, or just looking for a great day out in Dayton, Carillon Historical Park is absolutely worth the visit. It’s educational, inspiring, and beautifully done — a true treasure for the city and anyone who loves American history. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

New to the Ohio area and live about 25 minutes South of here so we decided to come check it out. Really glad we did! First the people working here are awesome. Helpful, kind and informative. We walked the entire area, road the big train and even jumped on the little train for a ride. Little train isn't always available to ride but apparently we came on the right day...throws you back to feeling like a kid for a few minutes! The grounds are kept up well, the walk is easy and relaxing and the big train is a nice relaxing ride around the park. Sit is the right place near one of the staff and they'll fill you in on the history and anything else you would want to know about. The park is full of history. I had no idea about the industrial impact Dayton had on the country at one time. Each stop at a new building is rich with information and there are plenty of cool things to look at. Wright brothers Museum was just as good as the rest of the park. Much larger than expected and lots of details about the Wright brother and their first flights. Overall it was neat to be thrown back in time and see where innovation has brought us. Even if you're not a big fan of history, it's worth the visit to check out some cool things on a relaxing walk around the park.

Absolutely love it! It was a spontaneous decision to go here as a date. It was a hit like escaping the city and going on vacation. You really will feel like you're not in Dayton Ohio. They have many things to see, and you must get the all-day train pass. Then before you leave, get some of the great food at their restaurant!

I visited Carillon Historical Park for the antique fire apparatus show and had a fantastic experience. It was a joy to photograph the vintage equipment and explore the park’s well-curated exhibitions. The park is exceptionally clean, easy to navigate, and offers a rich, engaging display of Dayton’s industrial history. A must-visit for history and photography enthusiasts alike!

This is now our 5th time at breakout games, and once again they have not failed to deliver a fun and engaging experience. This time it was just me and my fiance, and we had a blast. Being pretty experienced allowed us to escape even with just 2 brains! Kavan was an amazing game master, kept things fun and mysterious the entire escape. Definitely will be returning with more friends to do one of their newer escapes!

The Beach Waterpark

Water park
Water & Amusement Parks
Tropical-themed water park with white sand & palm trees, slides, rides, play areas & an arcade.
This is our new favorite water park! The prices were reasonable from tickets to food. The park was extremely clean, lifeguards were attentive, and the setting was so nicely done intertwined with nature. I have a teen down to a 5yr old and they all had a blast at this park! My favorite part was that it was not busy. I am tired of paying a fortune to wait in line all day and receive poor customer service like other larger water parks. This was unforgettable and we will be back!
Megan B — Google review
Labor Day was the perfect day to go and they honored my Groupon that excluded that holiday. I really wish there were more umbrellas by the wave pool and a cleaner Lazy River.
Rose W — Google review
Lazy river is filthy, many slides have nearly no water pressure, people get stuck on many of the slides and have to scoot down. Water is dirty in some of the pools, and the staff is very rude and doesn't seem to care about anything. We complained to the staff about all of this and no one cared. Food is bad and overpriced. The bathrooms are also disgusting. The only decent thing we experienced was the wave pool. It's a shame the park is so poorly maintained because it's such a neat location among all the trees and it used to be so nice. But it has just gone downhill. Some of the things I can easily overlook, but the lack of water pressure on the slides is really the deal breaker. And I have seen many other reviews commenting about the same issue.
Ben M — Google review
About half the rides were shut down because they didn't have the staff to man them. 6 of 7 ticket counters were closed, so a long line at the one open counter. Same story at the concession stands - long lines and not enough help. The rides that were open were fun, but since everyone was crowded onto the few open rides, again, long lines. The place could be nice, but it has a tired, worn look and wasn't very clean. Not enough shade, not enough chairs or tables. I suppose they wanted us to put all of our stuff in one of their $15.00 lockers. The $10.00 parking charge was another unpleasant surprise. The rides all posted 250-pound weight limits for riders, but this was never enforced, raising questions about this establishment's safety culture.
XingjianR — Google review
Great staff, friendly people, and Live Reggae on Sundays keep me coming back. Season Passes are reasonably priced..and there's beer! :-) I've been coming for years and have made several longtime Friends as a result of my visits there. There's a kiddie section for the little ones and plenty to do for everyone else. I would definitely recommend a visit.
Gregory M — Google review
While the rides that were open were fun, there were a significant number of slides that were closed that poorly reflected the park on a day that a lot of new people would come (a carload of people for $50 after 4 pm). When all of the slides are open, I imagine that the park is much more appealing and operates a lot more smoothly especially if the park is fully staffed. If you go, don't expect for all of the slides to be open.
Zach F — Google review
We almost didn't go due to so many bad reviews but I'm glad we went. My kids had a good time. Two of the attractions were closed but it was still plenty to do. Some things could have been better but that's everywhere. For the saturday carload price i say its well worth it! We would definitely go again!
P. D — Google review
Five of the attractions were closed (four slides and one children’s pool). Not worth the ticket price even after the slight discount you can get online or at Kroger. Also, the pools had a lot of debris and leaves. I am aware it can’t all be removed but it appeared there was little attempt to clean them prior to opening that day. We made our one and only trip-we won’t be back.
Emily K — Google review
Awesome place, perfect for family time, a lot of water slides...
Adriana G — Google review
It's been a number of years since my family has been here but they closed down our favorite section of the park. There is very little shade and not enough double tube slides for parents riding with children that are to big for the kiddie area but too small to go alone down the bigger slides. The life guards seemed unhappy to be here. The lines were reasonable and the bathrooms were clean. We will be going to a bigger park next time, where even though the tickets will cost more, I feel like I will get my monies worth.

Water & Amusement Parks
Kings Island is a vast amusement park with thrilling rides, including roller coasters and a wave pool. The park features a lifelike exhibit of dinosaurs that adds to the excitement. Along with restaurants, shops and novelties, Kings Island offers seasonal celebrations such as Halloween haunt and winter fest. With their 50th anniversary, they have added new attractions which makes it an exciting experience for visitors of all ages.
Amazing experience rides were all super fun and not to long of a wait for the rides. The Eiffle tower was cool to see and the music and atmosphere was super nice. If you love rides I suggest going here. Parking wasnt too bad but we did part pretty far. Food was decently priced as well. There is also a bridge not far south that you can walk across or drive to get to Kentucky
Connor S — Google review
Just finished our very first visit to Kings Island for their Halloween haunt event. Overall it was a great time. The theming for Halloween around the park, especially at night was immersive, and well put together. The amount of rides, especially coasters, was also great, even though there’s only 2 truly great ones there in Orion, and Diamondback. The only issue is with the operations, as a lot of the workers around the park, are young, and very misinformed on the parks policies, or pass info. Ride operations were great as far as the speed they were dispatching rides, but also huge drawback is that on every single coaster aside from Diamondback, they tell you where to sit. For coaster enthusiasts this is a very bad thing, as we typically like to ride in certain trains to get the full experience. That’s the only reason for dropping a star. The Haunt event was decent with scare zones full of actors, however the haunted mazes we went through aside from Conjuring which is a separate price, and kill mart, were very poorly set up. Very long lines, yet hardly any actors in them. Conjuring was decent but a bit overpriced, and kill mart was the best scare attraction in the park by a mile. The dining plan is confusing but pays off easily. The night time show at the end was top notch as well. Some things could be improved but for the amount of stuff to do there, getting tickets especially during the sales is a no brainer. Looking forward to coming back soon!

I met my family for a day of fun in early October. The park was so well done for their Halloween Haunt. The park offered a great mix of scary and fun rides and activities for kids of all ages. We bought the package and the fast lane/ express lane option during the haunt which was well worth the money. We also also bought the drink option that ended up being one of the best investments we ever made. It was so hot that day and we were able to stay hydrated without breaking the bank. The icing on that he cake was the Conjourng! Highly recommend!!
Melina P — Google review
I have gone 4 times this year so far. Love the family friendly environment and adult friendly vendors here. Very well kept park with good selection of rides. I don't recommend going on Saturday especially during the haunt season! Unless you enjoy 2-3hr lines for everything..
Jerrin J — Google review
I mean come on, it’s Kings Island, one of the best amusement parks in the world, what can I say? The Haunt is extremely well done, much better than Carowinds, Kings Dominion or any of the Six Flags parks’ versions. If you like coasters and great atmosphere and fun, this should be a top destination for your travel plans.
Joey G — Google review
They are not joking when they say the operations here are world class. I think the diamondback trains dispatch 3 seconds after the back row people sit down, because the workers have already buckled and checked all the front rows by then. It’s crazy. Incredible night rides on the Beast, and you know it’s true because many people in my party agree that it was worth the 140 minute wait. Pro tip go at dusk and line up so that it’s dark by the time you reach the front, otherwise you will waiting for hours like us and the rest of the park. Insanely well rounded top five coasters here too.
N W — Google review
Came here a few times with a season pass this year, a good time each visit. Definitely recommend to get at least a gold pass which includes Haunt nights during Halloween. Be advised, haunted houses are NOT included in the pass, you’ll need a separate arm band that’s $10 you can get the day of.

Had a great family day for Labor Day Weekend! Plenty of parking and fun! Bought tickets online before we arrived and walked right over from the Great Wolf Lodge! Snoopy Land was fun for a few rides -we had a 7 & 8 year old so we were in between rides but still enjoyed ourselves. The Eiffel Tower was great for them to experience. The Ship Ride was a test of their courage. Lots of snack areas and drinks. Lots of bees around the soda area. Not a fan. Great shopping areas and Candy Zone -photos at entrance for the groups. The racer was fun and carousel. Will do the Waterpark next summer. Great time to enjoy. Lots of walking. Can’t wait to take them back as they get older.

1st— there is an entry fee to get in. I have a pass which was $40/yr. If you are single, a couple or family, and you plan to visit often, I HIGHLY suggest purchasing a pass. If you pay to enter that will be deducted from the pass you purchase. There are restrooms, a welcome/educational area/store. I did see a lot of people with pets although I’m not sure about all trails allowing dogs. The entire nature playscape are absolutely awesome if you have children. Trails range in distance and difficulty so do your due diligence in checking. There is one trail that has like a gazillion steps. Took me a minute and a half to descend all the stairs at a normal pace (I’m short) It’s very scenic though.

Peaceful place to walk. Well maintained trails, clean restrooms, and in certain seasons, the opportunity to feed turtles. In the ponds where feeding is not allowed it is common to see turtles sunning, frogs, and sometimes even newts. An excellent pollinator garden plus a variety of natural play areas for children. Wildflowers and naturalized bulbs bloom through the warmer months. In September, fall crocus bloom.

It’s my first time here, and the entry fee for adults is $10. Unfortunately, I don’t qualify for any other discounts. It seems like a great spot for taking photos—there were lots of families with photographers doing wedding or family shoots. I was hoping to catch some fall colors, but it looks like it’ll take a few more weeks. The leaves are just starting to turn yellow.
