Embark on an unforgettable adventure with Twin River Outfitters, where nature's beauty meets thrilling outdoor activities. Nestled in the picturesque Botetourt County, you can choose from a variety of experiences such as kayaking, rafting, boating, or tubing. Many visitors rave about their tubing escapades—floating down the river twice while soaking up the sun and enjoying a laid-back atmosphere. The friendly staff ensures that your experience is seamless; they provide complimentary dry bags and life jackets for safety and convenience.
There was a booking situation but they corrected it and we had no issues. This was a great 2 day/1 night trip, Glen Wilton / Iron Gate to Horseshoe Bend! We stayed at the Gala Campground - Site #3 & #4 Off Grid Glamping Site - River Rest Cabins; they were surprisingly well equipped and the solar lights inside were perfect! We had fun and can't wait to do another trip!

We had an amazing time kayaking down the James River! Paula was incredibly friendly and informative—she walked us through the whole process and made everything super easy. We did the 5-mile Springwood trip, which took about two hours, including a snack break and a quick dip in the water. Just a heads-up: water shoes are required, but if you don't have any or forget them—they have some available for purchase on-site. If you're looking for a fun and refreshing summer activity, this is it. 10/10 recommend!

We went on the 10.5 mile alpine route and had a wonderful day. The scenery was incredible , class 1 and 2 rapids were great but not too overwhelming. We called when we were an hour out and the twin river outfitter crew was there to pick us up at the end of our day . Great trip!
Michelle C — Google review
Just completed the 3 day, 2 night glamping trip Glen Wilton to Buchanan. I would highly recommend this trip and Twin Rivers in general. We checked in and were given great packets with maps and mileage, as well as a briefing by staff. Definitely helped us be prepared for the conditions. We got paddles and PFDs and put our gear in the kayak trailer, dry bags were available for our use but we didn’t need them. We were taken to our second night campsite first, just to familiarize and see where to exit the river. We then went to our first night campsite, same drill but we left our gear there. A quick trip to the launch point and we were off. I can’t stress enough how well prepared we felt before we even hit the water. The campsites (Glampsites) were really nice, wall tents with cots, fire pits, chairs, tables, fresh water container, bathroom, and firewood for sale. Really very comfortable! We utilized Twin Rivers gear moving service, so all we took on the water was fishing gear, lunches, and day bags. Twin Rivers had all our other gear moved to the next site and waiting for us. Very convenient, made the paddling way easier and more comfortable. Overall a definite 5 star experience, a professional and friendly outfit and staff, competitive pricing, and a well thought out experience. Do yourself a favor and book a trip with Twin Rivers, I will definitely be doing it again!
Steve B — Google review
We booked an overnight trip from Eagle Rock to Buchanan with one night at the Horseshoe Campground. We slept in the glamping tents and had the kitchenette and water which helped for less things to carry on the kayaks. We had our own kayaks, but they shuttled us to the start. Overall, a super experience and we had a lot of fun on this section of the James 🥰❤️ We will come back for another section I am sure.
Kerstin M — Google review
We stayed at the back run camp site and it was fantastic! Primitive yes which is what we like but it did have a very nice gravel area set up that was nice and level and had a small tiki bar like structure that was very nice to have to keep out stuff under. We will definitely be back!
Jon B — Google review
We absolutely loved our time on the river. The staff we met were so friendly and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend going mid-week at the end of September / start of October if you can; you get the whole river to yourself!
Leanne T — Google review
WOW! What can I say? Words to not do justice to the beauty, the nature, the birds, animals, and the incredible water! Most important - the staff at Twin River Outfitters were super awesome! I have done quite a bit of white water rafting and kayaking in Colorado and Arizona (some on my own and some via outfitters). This team is professional, personal, and very much on the ball. They are extremely concerned about their customers' safety. They did tell us the James River had mile markers along the way but our party did not see any! Perhaps the brush had grown over the signs!

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve

Nice place and very suitable for fishing and kayaking in the lake. Hiking in the trails, there's an area picnic too. Love this park so much.
Enaas S — Google review
We enjoyed walking the paved trail by the picnic area. There's a boat dock and several places where you can fish. They rent kayaks. Great place to connect to nature. We didn't even scratch the surface of all the trails that you can enjoy.
Sherry D — Google review
Really scenic and a great place for kayaks, canoes, SUPs. Motor boats are limited to very small motors so it’s not a wake party all the time. Not a great fishing lake.
Kevin B — Google review
Kayak rental: $15 or $20 for tandem Canoe/rowboat rental: $10 prices per hour Life jackets included but come before 10 am on the weekend to make sure you get the equipment you want! Recommended time of 7-10am
Codi W — Google review
Great place. Perfect place to SUP board. The kayak launch makes it nice for the beginners. As you can see my sister using the launch.
Rodney M — Google review
Had a great time kayaking with my kiddos. Staff was great! Best bang for your buck, $15 for an hour on a double kayak. They're generous with the time, we paid for an hour but they gave us 2 ½ (we came back after 1 hour 15 minutes). They provide life jackets. They told us the kayaks wouldn't be available for 2½ hours but then they became available after 30 minutes so don't be disheartened!
Grace Z — Google review
Always the hidden gem if you want to get out. They have rentals here, we went kayaking and fishing. Huge fish would jump out the water every now and again. We seen a bald eagle at one point. We didn't even explore all the lake it's pretty vast with trails but wonderful to explore even by water. Can't swim here but we took a dip in the water if we got hot. I don't remember if there was restrooms, we didn't go looking but I'm guessing there is as there is a BBR pavilion area.
Hope — Google review
I can not say enough about this place! I just so happened upon it and the sunset there was spectral. I spoke to a very nice man, Jim, who worked there. Great conversation! I came back in the morning to kayak. The workers in the morning were friendly and helpful as well. Cash or check only for entrance. Beautiful. Quiet.

Douthat State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
A lake, trout streams & 43 miles of hiking trails attract families & others to this scenic area.
This was our 1st time camping here. The sites are well maintained, and the bathroom is amazing, clean, and lots of hot water, with a heater in the shower room, so you stay nice and warm in the colder months. We got there after hours the 1st night, and the ranger helped us to our site and continued to stop by and chat with us for the rest of our stay. The staff and camp hosts were very helpful! There are trails galore for hiking, the lake is beautiful. We will be back here again, for sure !
Charlene D — Google review
Picturesque to say the least, Duthart does every bit of justice to its good name. A vibrant beach filled with charming children during the summer , leisurely couples boating on the lake, aspiring anglers, beautiful trails… you name it and you’ve got it! Parking is 7$ , pictures don’t do justice you have to come here to see it firsthand.
Rupam C — Google review
The park this time of year is not very crowded. My dog absolutely loves running the trails here. Tuscaloosa cabin is a must! Be prepared, this place has no cell coverage whatsoever at most of the campgrounds. The whispering pines barely has enough coverage for text messaging. Starklink is usable except for white oak campground. Tree, cover there is problematic. Which is fabulous, if that's what you're looking for.
Shon N — Google review
This is a beautiful park, with miles of tails. If you are a hiker, be aware that mountain bikes are allowed on most trails. This makes them a bit grooved and rocky. The swichbacks are also super ling, so consider that when you figure out how long a distance will take you to complete. The facilities are top notch. Cabins or camping is nice. Now the waterfalls are underwhelming in the autumn. I laughed, because if i was ever going to give a natural feature a 1 star review, Blue Suck Falls would get it 😂
Richard G — Google review
This has to be one of my favorite state parks in Virginia. We visited during a long weekend on a rainy day, so it wasn’t crowded. The lake is beautiful, and the view from the lake is even more stunning. I can’t recommend it enough. If you love nature, this place is a must visit.
Tharuni K — Google review
Went on a very hot, muggy Sunday. Had a nice 4.5 mile walk with my dog through the woods and up a mountain, and then back down through a seasonal creekbed and again through some woods. Definitely recommend taking water for you (and the dog) along with some snacks, you'll need the energy for the climbs. And, dont forget the bug spray!
Paige B — Google review
Nice state park. We were going to kayak, but all the kayaks are set on top kayaks. They did have one or two set in kayaks, but they wouldn't let me rent those. It was just me and my dog and I prefer the set in when it's just the two of us. We did have a nice time and we picnicked at the at the end of the lake where the overflow is, at the damn. it was really pretty
Katrina C — Google review
Great trails that are easy, they also have plenty wooded trails. Grill was closed today so be prepared incase that isn't an option. Great day there!!

Warm Springs Pools

Nature & Parks
Hot Springs & Geysers
A wonderful, unique experience! Water is the perfect temperature, so soothing, and perfect to just relax and forget about things for a while. 50 minutes of soaking is just the right amount of time. Fully relaxed, but not boring! There is a slight sulfur smell, but I didn't think it was bad. Water feels amazing, I wish I could visit often! They give you towel and pool noodle to float with. Sign up in advance to reserve your spot. Absolutely recommend visiting!
Rob R — Google review
This was a treat. I’ve lived here a long time and never made it until my friend visited. We drove in and check in was easy and quick. I liked the intro they give with the history lesson. I didn’t like it only being 50 minutes for $30. Would have preferred a longer session. We chose the lady baths due to the stunning opening. The changing room is spacious but not sealed which can make for a chilling changing session. There is a heater in the bathroom which helped. They have a spinner for the suits as well and plastic bags. A nice touch. We went on a Tuesday and it seemed like a lot of people at the talk but it wasn’t crowded when people chose different pools. Staff is lovely. The soak was lovely.
Ninette — Google review
Great experience, we got our pups with us. They allow on property but not pool area. Place very nice, quiet and super clean. My husband and my boy went in the pool. They were enjoying it.
Mulan V — Google review
This is a really cool place with a long history! We booked online in advance, and visitors can choose adult only sessions or family sessions with kids. There’s no shower place, so visitors can only just have some rooms to change cloths but cannot take a quick shower after using the warm spring. Recommend if you happen to pass by this area - it’s a fun experience!
Y.C. W — Google review
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4-Star Review for Warm Springs Warm Springs is such a unique and charming experience. The buildings themselves are full of character—old, historic, and beautifully preserved with an original feel that makes the entire visit feel special. The price is fair for the experience, and overall I left feeling relaxed and refreshed. The soak itself was wonderful. They provide pool noodles to help you float comfortably, and the towels smelled amazing and were incredibly soft. It’s definitely a “reset” type of activity, especially on a colder day. Just be prepared—if you visit during the cooler months, getting out and changing back into your clothes is freezing. I went in early November and was shivering the moment I stepped out of the water. My biggest disappointment was that we did not get the full 50-minute soak that we paid for. Because the check-in area was so busy, we lost a chunk of our reserved time. When guests are required to book a specific time slot and pay in advance, I would expect staffing to be prepared for the number of people arriving. It felt unfair to start late when we paid for the full experience. Something that would elevate the visit even more would be incorporating more of the history. I found myself wanting to know when it was discovered, how it was originally used, who built it, the historical significance, and what renovations have been done. The property is overflowing with history, and sharing that story would make the experience even richer. Overall, it was a very cool and relaxing visit, and I’m glad we went. With a bit more efficiency at check-in and a deeper emphasis on the history, this would be an absolutely unforgettable experience.

"Take the waters" at the Warm Springs Pools... aka Jefferson Pools from a famous past patron. First built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it remains a popular place to enjoy its soothing waters to this day.
Bruce W — Google review
If you plan to come here make a reservation via phone call. The warm spring pools are great and really only warm but the water gives you a special treat for your skin and hair. Afterwards you really can feel the difference!
Nils H — Google review
Warm springs pools or Jefferson Pools is always a must visit. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Parking was not an issue but the closer it go to my soak time. The more it filled up. 2nd time I’ve been there and I always have the best sleep afterwards. Changing rooms and bathrooms in both facilities. Check online for soak times and you have to call in advance. Some soaks kids are allowed. There is adult times as well. Beautiful experience

The Omni Homestead Resort

Mentioned on
+5 other lists
Resort hotel
Spas & Wellness
The Omni Homestead Resort is a luxurious retreat established in 1766, offering elegant accommodations, a water park, and a spa. Guests can enjoy various activities such as golf, tennis, and fine dining at the American Audubon Dining Room. The restaurant serves continental cuisine with regional influences and seasonal dishes made from fresh local ingredients. While parking may be challenging and incurring additional fees, the resort's service is commendable.
The Omni Homestead was lovely, quite, picturesque, and everything you would like for a rejuvenating weekend or stay. The pools and spa have something for everyone in a family or group. The views are endless and inspiring. The old world American charm is spot on. The grounds are refine and well maintained; the flower boxes and plants are magical. The golf course makes a non-golfer want to learn the sport. The activities, such as the horse back riding, are fun and user friendly as well, the instructors are local and knowledgeable. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is well made, tastes excellent, and you can tell the chiefs actually care about what they are cooking for the guests. The rooms are perfect for sleep and lounging. It is a great place to go and vacation in a way that makes you feel like a time traveler with modern conveniences. It’s a beautiful place probably every season of the year, but fall was stunning. Highly recommend and plan to go back!!

Unorganized chaos! We arrived early afternoon, excited for a mid-week stay to avoid crowds, only to wait seven full hours for our final room. We had paid more for a “room with a view” which is specifically described on the website as having “landscape and vista views”. While we were unable to check into our room when we arrived, we were able to go to the shooting club (the only highlight of the entire stay – Hayden is great). When we returned over two hours later, our luggage was still sitting outside at the valet carport! Our room was ready, sans bags – finally – however, our “view” was of a fire escape! Not what was expected. So back down to the front desk we went. We were told we’d be moved to a room with a real view, but again that new room was not ready. So off we went to wander the property while waiting for a text/call that never came. After another two hours we returned to the front desk because it was pushing dinner time, only to be told that our bags had already been moved – we had received no text/call. The room itself? Certainly not worth the almost $600 a night. The bedroom was fine, though we’ve stayed in nicer Marriotts or Holiday Inns quite frankly. The bathroom was fine, but pull the shower curtain closed and it was covered in mysterious stains. As were the two resort robes in the closet that we were too disgusted to touch! When mentioned to the manager at check out, I was informed they were “having difficulty with their laundry service”. Gross!

Stayed at this beautiful hotel recently for a business conference. The staff was friendly and attentive. The hotel is gorgeous both inside and outside to include the grounds. The history tour at 10am was a nice way to learn more about the substantial past of the property. All conference rooms were spacious and there were many of them. My room was in the south building and was large with a great bathroom in a seperate room. Closet had a safe and the balcony was plenty large. The cleanliness of the room could be improved to include food chunks on the ground and hair in the bathroom. The tub also did not drain well and when showering was standing in ankle deep water quickly. There was plentiful gym equipment and the indoor pool was large and again gorgeous. Early in the morning after a night of guests there though had trash, broken glass, and alcohol containers strewn about the pool area. Nearby the Bachova beer company was walkable out of the spa entrance and was a great find with nice staff and reasonable prices. Depending on what income bracket you are in the food and drink prices at the hotel you may find very uncomfortable. However, this place was a nice experience. The random book shelves in hallways was nice and many places to sit and relax around the complex. The town and nearby towns are quite small but that is part of the charm of getting away at this place.
Michael G — Google review
Food at their restaurant wasn’t horrible but was overpriced. Single cheeseburger and plate of penne Alfredo with no protein, and a slice of cake came out to over 90$ before tip or tax. The cheapest room in the resort is over 500$ a night and the rooms are averaging more in the 1,200-3,000$ range. I was told a similar report by more than one local who lives in the town. They do not like the locals, and are very hostile towards them coming in or near the resort or restaurants located in the resort unless they are an employee. Locals say the resort has artificially brought the appearance of money into the town, but none of that money has gone into the local population and has created a lack of jobs unless you want to work for the resort. On top of this, the resort is actively brining in foreign employees on work visas to fill positions to again, artificially, give the place a feeling of class and money. Which has further taken jobs away from locals and damaged the small town economy. At first rolling into this town you’ll think, wow, how are all the buildings in this town so huge and beautiful in the middle of nowhere. Then you realize 90% of the town is made up of the resort and once you know, the town becomes a very sad sight. Much more so even when compared to other small towns of a similar size in the region. Nice resort, good food, good service. Way overpriced and hurts the town which it resides. Won’t be back

My husband and I chose the Omni Homestead for our mini-moon last weekend, and even though we were a little hesitant after reading some mixed reviews, we are so glad we decided to go. From the moment we arrived, the service was truly exceptional. We were greeted with glasses of champagne at check-in, and when we mentioned to Nicole at the front desk that we were celebrating our mini-moon, she surprised us with a complimentary bottle of cava, truffle, and a handwritten note in our room. Such a thoughtful touch! We spent a relaxing day at the spa, which was beautiful and serene, and later enjoyed cocktails in the Presidential Lounge where Ed was an incredible bartender—friendly, attentive, and fun to talk to. We did the Virginia Wine Experience, and had fun trying out local wines. Aoife, our server, was absolutely delightful—so kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm. Although it was a little crowded because of Fall Fest, we still felt like we received personalized attention at every turn. Every staff member we encountered went out of their way to make us feel special. We were honestly sad to leave and wished we had more time to explore everything the resort has to offer. The grounds are absolutely stunning and well kept. If you’re on the fence like we were, don’t hesitate—book the trip. The Omni Homestead made our mini-moon unforgettable, and we can’t wait to return!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4-Star Review for The Omni Homestead Resort We just returned from a one-night stay at The Omni Homestead for my 30th birthday, and overall, it was a beautiful and memorable experience. The property is absolutely stunning this time of year, and there is no shortage of activities! There’s plenty to explore and enjoy. One of my favorite touches was the complimentary 3pm tea time with pastries and hot tea or cocoa. Such a charming experience. We also loved the variety of on-site restaurants, and our room was clean with a very comfortable bed. The valet team deserves a special mention—they were outstanding. Friendly, professional, and full of personality. I also loved the puzzles and books available for guests; it made the resort feel warm and welcoming. Martha’s Market had some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, truly a standout. I also booked a spa massage, and I was so impressed with the entire experience. At first, the pricing felt high, but after spending several hours enjoying the amenities included, I realized it was absolutely worth it. Next time I will dedicate an entire day to the spa because I had no idea just how much there was to enjoy. The only part of our stay that fell short was the overnight service. I woke up at 5am needing water and realizing we forgot a toothbrush for my husband. I called the front desk, and although they assured me someone would bring the items, they never arrived. I called again an hour later—another apology, but still no delivery. Because we have newborn twins and three other young children at home, uninterrupted sleep was our top priority on this getaway, and I stayed awake so I wouldn’t miss the knock on the door. Unfortunately, the items didn’t arrive until around 9am, after my 4th phone call to complain and by then the morning rest we desperately needed was gone. We had already gone down to buy waters because we could not wait. The front desk assured me they would speak with a manager and offer something to make up for the inconvenience, but nothing was ever provided at checkout. I never expect compensation, but when something is promised, it’s disappointing when it isn’t followed through. Aside from that one issue, we genuinely enjoyed our stay, and there is so much about the resort that is truly exceptional. With a bit more consistency in guest service, especially during overnight hours, this would easily be a perfect five-star experience.
Alexis F — Google review
We recently stayed at the Omni Homestead Resort and had a wonderful experience overall. David at the Front Desk was extremely kind, professional, and helpful—he assisted us with a room upgrade and made the process smooth and pleasant. Gladys from Guatemala was also incredibly friendly and attentive, and Luis, another team member from Guatemala working in one of the restaurants, provided us with excellent service. However, upon check-out, we had an unfortunate experience with the valet parking. We waited for over an hour to receive our car, receiving several different explanations—first that there were only two people available, then that the car couldn’t be found, and finally that it wouldn’t start. Eventually, I had to walk over myself, and it turned out the battery had died because the valet had left the lights on. Once we got home, the car still had issues starting, and we had to temporarily replace the battery. Despite this incident, the staff mentioned above truly made our stay enjoyable. We hope the management can review the valet process to ensure better communication and care in the future.

Our very first visit! We celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary there! We loved everything about it: the history, architecture, the property, activities, and the staff. The property is breathtaking! I could not envision it's beauty before we arrived. We plan on returning next year for our 40th! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

This was a sudden stop because we saw the Sun and I'm so glad we did. It is the cutest spot. A great place for a picnic or to take a little dip in the water to cool off! Also very good for pictures

This is such a great bridge! I've seen several covered bridges over the years, but the construction of this bridge is amazing! Plus you get to walk through it and touch it. Just wish people would quit marking it up. It's over a nice body of water with a park area around it. Would be a great place to picnic. Make sure you look up when you walk into it.
Jamie J — Google review
What a beautiful little stop for my wife and I. I thought the natural beauty of the crystal clear running water and the wildlife was absolutely stunning. And I know this may not be everyone opinion but I didn’t mind the vandalism. We are so glad to have stopped, and surprisingly it was just a few miles out of the way from our original stop. Don’t pass it by it’s worth it!

Very tranquil, lots of greenery with a cool, meandering creek flowing under two scenic bridges. The Humpback bridge is a classic wooden covered bridge that wisks you back to horse n buggy days. Wade into the clear water or just sit on the bank and skip flat stones. Splendid little getaway with no harsh rapids or dangerous currents. Picnic tables and porta potties conveniently located near the parking lot.

This is a must see. Bring the family. Pack a picnic. Lounge in the water. Great location for photos. Check out the LOVE sign, read about the history and rebuild of the bridge.

Absoutely Stunning Covered bridge, with a creek running underneath-perfect for cooling off on hot days, clean picnic area. L❤️VE it!

We stopped on our way through and we were not disappointed. A very nice place to take a moment and appreciate the outdoors. The bridge was very pretty (except for some graffiti) water was crystal clear. Well landscaped and easy access to the water.

Love this little park. Excellent if you are traveling with pets and/or children. We got take out at a nearby fastfood 10 miles away on the interstate and ate at the park. There tables and portable toilets with handwashing station. Kids loved it.

The Greenbrier

Mentioned on
7 lists
Resort hotel
Sights & Landmarks
The Greenbrier is a historic and expansive resort located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The property features traditional accommodations, a variety of restaurants, a luxurious spa, and five golf courses. Designed by renowned interior designer Dorothy Draper and currently maintained by Carleton Varney, the resort boasts vibrant colors and bold patterns throughout its decor.
What can you say about the Greenbrier but... Wow! First the good news: From my experience, it's not uncommon when staying in a world renowned hotel's "standard" room that you end up disappointed with your stay. That wasn't my experience with the Greenbrier. If you're a person who loves to travel and experience truly exceptional/one-of-a-kind location the Greenbrier has to be on your list. The location is incredibly beautiful, the hotel and the grounds (while old) are immaculately maintained. The hotel's restaurants are wonderful, and the service throughout the resort is over-the-top. Also, the rooms (at least our room) are excellent. In addition, there are a long list of activities available for adults, children & families (such as: hiking, golf, casino, yoga, biking, fishing, horseback riding, bowling, geocaching, croquet, falconry, bunker tour, etc. etc. etc.). - Now the bad news: The Greenbrier is NOT CHEAP!! While you might be able to get a room during a slow period for a reasonable price (by Greenbrier standards) there are numerous added fees (resort fee, historic restoration fee, occ. tax, sales tax, valet parking, etc.) that are charged PER NIGHT. And, the excellent onsite restaurants are very expensive, as are any of the activities you might sign up for. So, it's easy to run up a large bill. In fact, if you read many of the negative reviews the hotel gets they frequently center around the fees charged and how much a stay costs. So the bottom line is, if you're someone who worries about spending money think twice before booking. If, however, you want a great experience and can afford it, this might be the place for you!

We attended a beautiful wedding and spent 2 nights. The wedding and dinner after were both perfect. The bunker tour was very interesting, and the tour guide was great. The tour is very overpriced. Although, everything at The Greenbrier is overpriced. There are no slippers, robes, or hairdryers in the rooms as stated on the website. Also, there’s a strict dress code listed on the website. However, it’s not enforced. We somehow got roomed next to someone who brought their dog that decided it needed to bark incessantly each night at about 10 pm. Both nights, I called and ended up having to go to the front desk to have them find the owners to quiet the dog. The personnel were all wonderful and apologetic. They did remove the “resort fee” for both nights. The 9.75% Historic Preservation Fund fee per night is a bit of a joke considering it doesn’t seem that the building itself is being preserved or kept up with. It’s very hot in the resort. There is air conditioning in the rooms. Because of the age of the building, there is none in the hallways. If you go in the summer, expect to sweat a lot. I understand that a lot of people don’t like the decor. While it’s not my taste, I understand keeping it that way for the historical value. I would personally never again pay what we did to stay there. However, there are people who can afford to spend that kind of money and enjoy doing it.

I was really excited to book this trip for my family. It turned out to be far from what we expected. The rooms are old and outdated. Floors are carpeted and dirty. We had a rollout bed brought to the room, the springs were coming through. There is visible mold in some of the ceiling corners of the hotel. My kids were really looking forward to watching the movie offered at the hotel and it didn’t work the two days we tried to go there. For the cost, it’s just not worth it. This resort is in need of serious renovation. The only positives were the carriage ride, walking grounds, and shuttle. The employees are very nice. I would not recommend nor come back.

My favorite place in the world. It is charming, luxurious, rich with history, the grounds are gorgeous, the staff makes you feel like you are right at home. The Greenbrier is my favorite destination in the United States. I will forever be vacationing at The Greenbrier, it is unparalleled and incredibly special. Rooms are lovely, decor is enchanting and there is a surplus of activities from pickleball to tennis to golf to horseback riding to skeet shooting to fly fishing. The Greenbrier reminds you what life is really about. Unwinding, spending quality time with people you love and being one with nature!

The grounds of this place are amazing. We enjoyed the fall outdoors very much. However, this place is way overpriced for the service and food if you are staying in the resort. They clearly put all their effort towards members and honestly dont seem to care much about just hotel guests. The whole experience is way overpriced for what it is. It prices itself as a high end resort but the rooms and service is not anywhere near that. The food is mediocre at best and I got sick one night from it. Everything is overpiced as is but then they add all these extra fees and even a liquor tax (despite the fact that restaurants outside dont hvae the tax). They also charge you crazy fees to cancel anything and EVERYTHING. When we arrived we heard a guest at registration trying to leave early (I now understand why) and they refused to allow her to not pay for the remaining night ($800). OK, that MAY be understandable at hotels but this is high end place. It was cold so we tried to cancel our outdoor jeep adventure and they refused since were within 24 hours (and they were not nice about it), and we tried to cancel a dinner reservation because their food MADE ME SICK the night before and they charges us $50 per person to cancel! I asked to speak to the manager and the crappy concierge guy said "there's no point, they will charge you to cancel too." again, this is an expensive plance, treat us better. We stayed at other high end resorts and as soon as you book a room, they call and ask to help schedule things. This place never called after we booked and seemed like we were bothering them when we called and tried to confirm a king bed and inquired about reservations. So disappointing.

This place claims to be a 5 star resort. Not even close to five stars. The grounds are lovely. The hotel itself was decorated by Dorothy Draper and then her protege decades ago. I happen to like the retro bold colors and patterns and it gives a cool vintage vibe. That’s in the common areas. Where they lost me was the rooms. I tried to tell myself that it goes with the theme to make myself feel better but that didn’t work. The rooms are nothing but dated. Stains on the bright GREEN carpet, shabby furniture, canoe like mattress, our mattress was so bad that we asked to charge rooms. The bed in the second room was better and the bathroom had been updated. Same old tired carpet but the furniture was not as scuffed. Chairs in the room may have been sat on by Eisenhower himself. I don’t feel dirty per se but also don’t feel entirely clean. We ate at two of the restaurants. Sam Snead at the golf course and Prime 44. Both were good. Prime 44 is a nicer updated restaurant and the service in both were excellent. Did the bunker tour and it was interesting. Tour guide Margaret was excellent. Before coming know on every single thing you do or purchase there is a 9.75% Historic Preservation Fee. I mean everything. Food, drinks, bunker tour, gift shop etc. I’m not sure how the fee is being used because this entire hotel needs to be spruced up. It’s literally saying “I’m tired boss”
Kathy M — Google review
Booked a suite for 3 people and there is one bathroom (person using pull out needs to come into our room), mattress in the pull out bed is FULL of springs and so uncomfortable. We had to pull the bed out ourselves and call housekeeping for pillows and comforters (had to call 3 times before someone answered) Dinner was good, but my meal had a large piece of plastic in it and the waiter (not his fault) did not know how to handle it. Espresso martini does not have actual espresso and presentation is horrible. They weren’t able to make 2 of their offered cocktails because they were out of the ingredients. Not worth $1200 a night.
Amber P — Google review
The grounds are beautiful and incredibly well kept and the history is unique but food is just okay and everything is wildly expensive with several restaurants closed and limited options to eat. Rooms are fine not great. The golf course (Old White specifically) is a great course but the pro shop opens only 30 minutes before the first tee time and the restaurant and halfway house were closed so it’s a scramble to get a cup of coffee or food in the morning. Falconry is $250 per person after fees and is cool but not that cool… It’s an interesting place to visit with a lot of history but the value isn’t there for the price.

Beartown State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Beartown State Park, located on Droop Mountains eastern summit, is a stunning 107-acre area featuring peculiar rock formations, overhanging cliffs, and massive boulders made of Pottsville Sandstone dating back to the Pennsylvanian Age. The park offers a boardwalk for easy viewing of crevices and natural wonders. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant greens of the forest while traversing the boardwalks.
This is unlike any other type of nature preserve or walk I've ever visited; and I have been through a TON! This was truly unique and enjoyable. There are steps and boardwalks throughout, it started the morning with us feeling truly like we had the place to ourselves with our dog. Even as it got busier we could only hear some voices and giggles or excitement of other visitors.
Cindy F — Google review
I relate Beartown through the Shreck movie. All the rock formations are so unique. You look at all the perfect circles in the rocks and realize this took centuries of water dripping down to create these masterpieces. No bears but this could potentially have been a bear sanctuary. Have fun we did.
Rita W — Google review
Plenty of parking, handicapped accessibility, and restrooms on site. The boardwalk trail is a short loop through the area with a ton of signage explaining more about the different rock formations, vegetation, and the area itself. Very cool stop, relatively easy walk, good for families.
Ryan L — Google review
This place is truly amazing hidden gem! There are not many reviews, and there were also not many visitors when we arrived on a weekday. However, the view is truly beautiful! The boardwalk is super tranquil. Highly recommend!

I went here years ago with my family, but I recently decided to take my very adventurous boyfriend to see Beartown, as he adores hiking and really cool rocks 💖 we also took our doggos Hemi and Critter to enjoy the park for the first time! I have one warning: if it has rained recently, please do not wear Crocs or any sort of treadless shoes! It is very, very slick! We both almost slipped and fell on our butts several times 🙈 but there is so much to see and it's just a short little loop, you can easily take time out of your trip to come through and take a peek at some really cool geological formations ☺️

A self-paced journey of wonderment. The park offers a boardwalk navigates through natural rock formations and fauna. Beautiful surroundings I could have spent hours walking through. Though one doesn't have to spend long there, if you appreciate the beauty of nature, you will want to take your time going through. Signs offer information on highlights through the journey. It is a great place to spend some time duing hot weather since it is within tree cover and is cool and comfortable. Pictures and videos don't do it justice! It is much more beautiful than it appears. Some caution is warranted through the journey, though, as there are some slick spots on the wooden walkway depending on how much wet weather has occurred. There is handicap ramp that will allow people to journey through a large part of the way, but not completely to the bottom.

A quaint little spot off the beaten path!! A boardwalk takes you in and out, up and down and up close to these beautiful rock formations!! There was a pretty good sized hole at the bottom of one set of stairs so be careful of that and also the boardwalk can be pretty slippery for those who use a cane or walking stick..use the handrail too because your cane will slip out from you in some spots along the way!! It's a must see for everyone!!
Malissa W — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ No bears, all beauty — and rocks for days! Beartown State Park is the best kind of misleading—zero bears, but a whole town’s worth of awesome rocks. If West Virginia had a fantasy movie set, this would be it. Mossy boulders, twisty boardwalks, and crevices that look like they lead to another dimension. Felt like I was in Narnia, minus the talking animals (though we did hear a squirrel with attitude). Great for a quick hike, epic photos, and pretending you’re on an adventure quest. Hidden gem of Wild & Wonderful WV!

Lost World Caverns

Lost World Caverns, situated near Lewisburg, West Virginia, is a remarkable show cave that offers guided tours through its natural underground formations. Discovered in 1942, the caverns feature stunning stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone, and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the terraced pedestal-like structures and learn about the cave's history at the on-site museum. The tour takes you 120 feet below ground level to witness nature's hidden wonders.
I very much enjoyed the self-guided tour at Lost World Caverns. The experience was fantastic, and it's a great adventure. I would suggest a little maintenance to replace some of the burned-out lights, and a warning about head hazards would be helpful for those who are taller. Neither of these issues detracted from the experience, however. Highly recommended!

This is one of the neatest caves I've visited - it's a wet cave with some stunning formations and a self-guided tour path. The path was labelled really well with lots of signs detailing the history and special features. The gift shop is large and also features a small natural history museum with some fossils and models. The price of admission is great, this place is absolutely worth a visit!
Kate A — Google review
A great caverns from start to finish. The path was easy to follow with handrails 90% of the time. There are quite a few stairs but also a few shortcuts if you need to shorten your trek. Description plaques are provided throughout the walking path and overall, the caverns isn't too dark. I would recommend at least a sweatshirt or a second layer. Don't forget to mine for gems and check out the display of amazing fossils!
Heather B — Google review
Lost World Caverns is a small operation, but it offers big experiences for both kids and adults. The admission prices are very reasonable, and the staff take their time to make visitors feel welcome and well informed. Because the entrance fee was so affordable, we ended up buying quite a few souvenirs in the gift shop. Our children especially loved the gem mining activity, where they could search for stones in a gold-panning style setup, it was both fun and educational. Overall, Lost World Caverns provides great value and a memorable experience for the whole family.
Jannick K — Google review
For $12 this cave really surprised me at how great it was! I did no prior research, simply found it on Google Maps and went. The tour is self guided, and I simply showed up and bought my ticket onsite and walked directly into the cave afterwards which is accessed from inside the gift shop. The formations are quite neat with huge columns and stalagmites, and some fairly large stalactites as well! I just got back from Ireland where I saw the largest stalactite in Europe and I feel like the largest one in this cave isn't a whole lot smaller to the eye. So quite impressive! The cave trail itself is easy, anyone that can walk on their feet can easily make it through. It is not handicap accessible, but otherwise I saw several kids wandering around. Definitely worth a stop!

Absolutely worth visiting if you're in the area! Super neat cavern with an interesting history. The formations have to be seen to be fully appreciated! We did the self guided tour and we were able to go at out own pace. They offer a guided tour that goes over a mile farther into the cavern, it sounds awesome! There is a neat gift shop and even a little museum too.
Cassie T — Google review
Well worth the drive and time spent at this amazing destination. If you walk right through, 45 minutes but of course I love rock formations and the beauty within so it took about an hour plus. It is easily accessed right off interstate 64 although as you see the most beautiful homes you believe you're about to turn into someone's driveway. Don't fret the friendly goat will meet you and the llamas just keep chewing their hay. Also there is a natural history museum.
Glenda C — Google review
Traveling in the area from Chicago. Staying at Skyline Lodge visiting little gems here and there in the area... This one was fun and worth the extra little drive! Also did the gem mining of course, fun!!! Inside it says they also offer tours deeper into the cave, no lights, only the light on the helmet.. into tight spaces! If we are ever in the area again we would def consider that tour!!

Pipestem Resort State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Large state park with hiking & scenic vistas, plus an on-site facility with a buffet restaurant.
A light rain kept a lot of visitors away, so we only saw the park staff during most of our visit. Pipestem is one of the prettiest state parks I have seen as far as groundskeeping goes. This park is intended to be a place the whole family can enjoy. Golf for dad, spa time for mom, and a splash park for the kids, this place has something for everyone. Don't forget hiking, zip lining, and fine dining. We definitely plan on coming back for a longer visit.

Beautiful park, amazing views. If you are looking for the Almost Heaven swing, travel all the way to the back for the golf club house. Turn right and head to the tennis courts. The Almost Heaven Swing is to the right of the parking area. If you found the tennis courts you can't miss the swing.

Camped 4 nights in October 2025 and just love the campground - nicely spaced sites with shade available. Bathe house is clean and easy to access. Beautiful! And SOOO much to do! We took a trail ride for an hour on two very sweet horses. There is a great heated indoor pool and sauna at the lodge available for minimal fee for campers (free to guests at the lodge if course) and a beautiful lake for kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming in the summer. We hiked down the river trail and waded the Blue, then took the gondola back to the top. Super fun! We didn’t play disc golf, mini golf nor use the 18 hole course but they looked great. The Nature center was educational and has 3 live snakes and some turtles plus lots of educational material. Didn’t try the restaurant as we did our own cooking but looked good. Didn’t try the archery or zip line but will next time. The views were gorgeous! Highly recommend this park!
Jane B — Google review
Naturalist here is one of the best. Always having great activities for the family. So make sure to visut the nature center. Shes there year round. Park is one of the best in the area. Trails are a little rugged and inclines and declines abundant. But the views are worth it. Park is kept nice. Highly recommend Park to just vist or camp at. Once they finish the new tram. I highly recommend the River trail if you like a challenge. Just be ready to get wet and that the tram is going that day. The lodge is also nice. Pool is nice and warm.

Came here for the first time this weekend. We stayed at the lodge in the park. We explored the entire park and enjoyed every aspect! The hiking was amazing and we also enjoyed going down to check out the lake. The views are spectacular everywhere you look. I definitely recommend to ride the tram down to see the mountain creek lodge area, the bluestone river area is so incredibly beautiful!
Tracy V — Google review
To start with it’s very difficult to get someone to answer the phone when trying to make or confirm reservations. We stayed 3 nights at McKeever Lodge. The building is very much in need of renovation. It’s also a poor design, very narrow hallways. It’s really difficult to get a suitcase cart into the elevator. Although hard to get to, the Bluestone dinning-room is very good with a friendly staff. The new tramway wasn’t open but that should be a unique experience. Although, renovating the lodge may have been a better use of those funds.
Recardo P — Google review
Great state park!!! Has plenty of wildlife, great places to walk and hike, or bike as well. Also has good activities ans great views. It is also close to Bluestone State Park and Sandstone falls. The tram is opening back up this year as well.

Such a cool park. I've been coming here for over 30 years. Always plenty to do. The campground is very nice and the fire tower hike is a must!

Winterplace Ski Resort

Ski resort
Nature & Parks
Ski & Snowboard Areas
Skiing & snowboarding offered in a beginner-friendly mountain setting with rustic accommodations.
We loved it! Both of us are beginners and there were several greens for us ranging from super easy to a little more challenging. Even did a couple of the easier blues. Had perfect weather and the lines were short. The rental gear was also in great shape. Not great food options, but otherwise no complaints from the newbies.
Elaine T — Google review
Liked this place before one situation ⬇️ ( would advise to bring food with you, just my preference) ———///——-///—— Update: I really enjoyed my first visit to Winterplace, but after returning in late February, I had a very different experience. Here’s what happened: At the end of February, we visited Winterplace for the second time on a weekend. Unfortunately, this time our experience wasn’t as pleasant as expected. When we arrived at the children’s ski center, my 6-year-old son took off his boots and tried to step into the skis wearing only socks. It was just a moment of typical childlike curiosity, and he was already getting ready to put on the proper gear. One of the staff members kindly and calmly explained that he needed to put on socks first. However, another employee (a tall woman whose name I don’t know) harshly and loudly told him to stop, which triggered a strong emotional reaction in my son. I told her that everything was fine – he had just been skiing down the big hills successfully. It was clear to me that his reaction was caused by her raised voice. Of course, kids should follow safety rules, but this could have easily been explained calmly instead of yelling. After that, the woman calmed down and returned to her duties. I paid for the lesson and we went to the group, but my son refused to take part because he didn’t feel comfortable with that instructor. To give him time to adjust, we took a break for a little over an hour, then decided to try again. When we returned, the same instructor said that the class was already more than halfway through, so he couldn’t join because he “didn’t know what to do.” I understood that and didn’t argue. However, when I asked if we could simply stay nearby without joining the group, she firmly refused to let us even remain on the training area. I explained that we had paid for the lesson, but my son wasn’t able to participate because of her unprofessional behavior. Her response was cold and dismissive: “Well, fine,” as if we were bothering her. Conclusion This wasn’t our first time visiting Winterplace, and everything had gone well previously. But this time, the situation left a bitter aftertaste. Such tone and behavior are unacceptable when working with children. Kids are not machines or soldiers — they require a thoughtful and sensitive approach. Some staff clearly understand how to work with young children, and they should be guiding others. Every child has the right to receive support and instruction appropriate to their age and developmental level. If you have groups for children ages 5 to 12, instructors should understand that the developmental needs of a 5-year-old are very different from those of a 6-, 8-, or 10-year-old. I hope that Winterplace management will take this seriously and provide additional training in child psychology and respectful communication. Every child deserves a safe and supportive learning environment.

I stayed in 541 Winterplace Dr at the resort for a trip with my fraternity brothers. We were all super excited to have a good time but when we walked in we were met with disgusting walls and rusted doors. I don’t even want to get into what the laundry room looks like but I will upload photos. The mattresses were super dirty and the ac was all the way down to 47. Keep in mind it’s November so we are freezing. It takes hours for the heat to go up, and the floors are sticky and rugs have mysterious stains. There’s holes in the walls too. One of the bathrooms had water flooded onto the floor when we got there which is completely unsanitary. Also on floor 2 in the room with its own bathroom there is a nest of spiders and they’re sitting on the top of the bathroom. Nobody wants to go in there and it’s disgusting. I’m not sure why it’s like this because the other cabin we have is so nice. This one is quite literally an abomination and outrageously disgusting. Please do not come here to stay as I feel Ive gotten sick because of just being here along with others. My whole party is leaving a day early because of this. It feels like there is black mold in here because it’s that disgusting.
Andrew S — Google review
Stayed at 541 winterplace drive, was the most horrendous cabin ive stayed at. Spider infestation in both bathrooms and in the bedrooms, mystery stains everywhere, no seating, broken glass, blinds held up by a coat hanger sticking through the window, and so much more. I dont even know how this is possible because the other cabins located here are in much better condition. DO NOT COME, my whole party ended up leaving the next day because how terrible it was. forgot to mention the heat doesnt work, highest it got to was 51 degrees.

Great ski and tubing experience. Bunny Hill was kind of lame, flat and hard to get any momentum to learn. Then it drops off quick. Had some good trails for the more advanced skiers in our group. Finding a table at lunch was a challenge. Some of the trails, even for beginners have steel drops off the side.
Tina G — Google review
We stayed at 541 Winterplace Dr and it was DISGUSTING. The bathroom floors were flooded, beds had no sheets, there were spiders and other bugs everywhere, and the cooking wear had mold on it. I will never come back here. It ruined my weekend.
Riley M — Google review
Very nice resort. 4yrs and under is free. Their bunny slope area is sort of hard to get to. Should walk on foot and avoid skiers on the trail. All trails seem wide. A lift ticket goes all the way to 9pm! Who has the time? Who likes the night icy conditions? Cafeteria is spacious. Food was ok.
GiGi F — Google review
Awesome place to get "wet behind the ears" for learning how to ski. Learning how to ski in Japan, I was told to expect to have a high standard for other places to meet, but Winterplace did great! After my wife and three kids received their crash course lessons and some fine-tuning from me, they were crushing some greens. Gift shop is expensive due to the snow sport tax but there are enough items to match your budget. Ski-wee lessons went great for our son because Lillian was a great instructor! The military discount is solid and Tammy was one of the sweetest employees I've ever dealt with. If we can make it here next year, it wouldn't be soon enough!

Little Beaver State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Massive nature area with a large fishing lake, 20 mi. of hiking trails & numerous picnic sites.
Little Beaver is stunningly deceiving! Our first few times there we walked the ~1 mi Lake Trail not knowing that this place is HUGE. So many wonderful trails to explore beyond the lake. Up by the campgrounds you can find beautiful open spaces and a playground as well.
Ria G — Google review
The park was quiet and loaded with deer. The disk golf course was really fun and there were several deer filled trails. The bathrooms are also clean, the only downside to the upper camps(non electric) is that there is no direct trail marked to the bathroom. This makes you walk all the way around, which is some distance away. I don't mind raking some leaves but when you pull into the office and two people are sitting and you have to rake your entire site, that's not ok. All the sites had leaf litter over 10" deep in areas around the benches and sitting areas. The sites are large with easy pull out. The slide needs repaired as the tube is cracked.

This place is incredible. I stayed one night, left and stayed at a different park and hour away and it was awful so I went back to little beaver and stayed two more nights. I didn't want to leave! Non power sites are super private and beautiful. I nearly had the place to myself. Fawns appear regularly. Non buggy. A cardinal visited me every morning to tap on my windows and peep at himself in my van mirror. I loved every minute at this place. Even had great cell service. Hope to return one day💙💚

Nice area. Some sites steep entry. Saw a guy about tear his jack off the back. Area around bathouse has people coming and going as sites are all in one big area pretty much. There were some sites down the hill in the trees. Probably better for smaller rigs. Kids tend to hang out around bathouse. We were on sites 20 and it was pretty good. Site 25 as well. Not really any shade. Worked pretty good for our 45ft rig, but some sites are unlevel. Walking trails could use some work and aren't marked real well. Lots of deer. Would visit again. No sewer that we seen. Dump station is nice and level though. Has one washer and dryer that was really nice. $1.50 wash, $1.00 dry. It's at the bathouse.

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in West Virginia offers a fascinating glimpse into the state's coal mining history. Visitors can explore an actual vintage mine on a guided tour led by former miners, gaining insight into the challenges and experiences of 19th-century and modern-day mining. The site also features a museum, gift shop, and reconstructed mining camp with picnic spots.
Surprisingly fun and entertaining. We stopped here while visiting Beckley, WV and Sandstone Falls during a day trip. We definitely had a great time. Our guide, was funny and informative. The coal mine cart was very cool. Our 6 year old did have a hard time listening to the stories and information from the 1900's (his words). My mother and father enjoyed the coal town and the historic items/ buildings, reminiscing about their childhood. Our son also enjoyed the youth museum and bonus frontier town. When it says you need 2- 2.5 hours to explore everything that's the minimum. We probably could have spent at least 3.5-4 hours here walking around and exploring. If you have the time I would recommend visiting.

They do a really good job with this "museum." You can go on the train ride into the museum, guided by a retired coal mine worker. There are also other actual buildings from other coal mine camps that have been relocated to this location - - two room schoolhouse, chapel, managers house, bachelor's house, and a very nice complete children's museum. Good exhibits and artifacts. Pretty grounds. Certainly can spend a half a day or more there.

This wasn't on my first list of stops but I am so glad we added it! Our guide Gerald was absolutely a wealth of knowledge and had so much to offer. The mine tour, cabins and exhibits were all very well done. It may even be on my list to revisit if I'm in the area again! Excellent on every account!!
Heather B — Google review
This was truly the best part of our trip to beautiful West Virginia. Absolutely loved our tour guide Gerald. He was so kind, knowledgeable and personable. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour to anyone young or old. It was a great time!
Katherine G — Google review
I visited due to being a Fallout 76 nerd. It was a great experience. Everyone I met was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The woman in the schoolhouse shared fascinating historical details that really brought the setting to life. My mine tour guide, Don, was a retired coal miner who added so much depth to the tour. He spoke about growing up in a mining town, the realities of coal mining, and how the company store system kept miners trapped in debt. It was immersive and a wonderful visit.
Levana — Google review
My family and I planned a trip with several stops. This one was great to learn some of the coal history in Beckley and have the chance to ride a railcar into a once working mine. They only hire retired coal miners to give the tour, so you are getting the real deal! Clean facility, great tours and friendly people.
Melissa D — Google review
We had the best time on this tour. And their prices were unbelievably reasonable, even the things in the gift shop were priced so most people could afford something. This really meant a lot to this broke mama! Our guide was absolutely amazing too, a retired coal worker who knew literally everything. Even the 2 15 year olds were engaged and learned some really cool things while being entertained. I apologize again to our guide for us rushing him, we really loved this tour! This was by far my favorite part of our trip to the area.
Allison F — Google review
This museum is really cool if you're into history or coal mining or both. The guides are all former coal miners (our guide was 3rd generation) and they are very informative and in depth as they take you into an old mine from the late 1800s. It's a very unique experience and one I would highly recommend for anybody visiting the Southern West Virginia area.

Tamarack Marketplace is a vast cultural center located in Beckley, West Virginia. The unique crown-shaped building houses fine art galleries, shops selling West Virginia handicrafts and regional culinary creations, a theater, conference center, artisan workspaces, and hands-on classes. Visitors can explore glass, carvings, and artwork for sale while enjoying quick-serve dining options at the food court-style eating area.
Striking building housing items made or designed in West Virginia. On the outside there's a local artist sculpture garden, picnic table area, small playground. There are tee shirts , blown glass, wood creations, Fiesta Ware dishes, honey, jams, other food, many other items too for sale and a cafeteria and indoor seating area. I thoroughly enjoyed the rainbow trout from West Virginia dredged in seasoned cornmeal and pan seared topped with lemon butter sauce along with the local roasted mushrooms and mashed potatoes with gravy. You pick your meal. Extensive menu including fried green tomato sandwiches.
Daffodil M — Google review
A nice place to take a break from driving, but if you aren't interested in buying art pieces, it might not be for you. There were plenty of nice things to look at and some local food items (think jams and jellies). There were a few t-shirts and souvenir items, and a place to get some snacks and sit. If you're looking for local hand-crafted pieces, this is the place.

The facility is beautiful with wonderful products made in West Virginia. They also have one of the tourist swings you can take photos at. I took pictures of some stuff I liked. I no where near captured everything.

This has been a tourist attraction in wv off of I-77 for as long as I can remember. I’ve stopped here many times over the years and love to look at all the beautiful artistic creations from the people of my awesome state. Today I stopped here while I’m on a mission to find all the “almost heaven” swings with my husband. The building and grounds are beautiful and unique.

Wife and I have been here on a few occasions. A must see destination for local artistry of West Virginia, Virginia. Also, they allow campers and they have water on site only for RV freshwater holding tanks. A nice quiet place to stop for the day or evening and tour to see all of the artist work.

While visiting Beckley WVA my wife and I stopped by the Tamarack Marketplace to see what it was all about. This was our first time at the Marketplace and I haven't seen anything like this out west where we live so, it was a new experience for us. The marketplace was very impressive inside and out with so many beautiful things and an array of items including food, wine, glassware, pottery, quality woodworks, quilts, jewelry, restaurants and coffee. There is something here for everyone no matter the occasion and taste you'll find it at the Marketplace. It is a great place to visit. The service, the employees and the food was great.

Loved the different varieties of local art and craftsmanship. The atmosphere was nice really easy to walk around and want everything they had to offer. We only got coffee but it was fresh and good too.

Really great place to stop by if you are passing through. All items are created by local artisans. You can create your own glass blown ornaments or atch the process being done. I was really impresed by this chainsaw made completoit of wood...even the chain!

Twin Falls Resort State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Relaxing forest retreat with a lodge & cabins, a golf course & hiking & biking trails.
Beautiful state park. We rented one of the cabins for a long weekend during heavy rains, flash flooding, snow and wind. The cabins are a little outdated, but private and suited what we needed/wanted. The staff at the lodge were very friendly and helpful; they even allowed us to check out a little later to go hiking. Cabin guests are allowed to use the indoor pool/spa, which our son absolutely loved. The lodge is nice and inviting with a restaurant, small gift shop, brewed coffee in the morning, and of course pool/spa. We hiked the falls trail to see the waterfalls. They were amazing due to all the rain/snow. We love that WV state parks are so inclusive and the beginning of the falls trail is paved with benches, ramps and picnic tables. The park is about 20 min away from Beckley.

Over the years I've visited Twin Falls several hundred times. We've had family reunion, memorials, picnics and even weddings there. Beautiful scenery and clean restrooms along with several playground and picnic shelters available to host various types of gatherings. Lots of trails and numerous activities during the year too just adds to the overall attraction of this State Park.
Lora E — Google review
The waterfall is so cool! We were delivering an order to someone at resort and figured on way out we would park to go see it and it wasn't even a long walk either which made it even better!
Jessica P — Google review
Nice lodge, beds were a little hard, other than that it was a beautiful lodge. Staff was very friendly. The drive up the mountain was very intense as it was 10 at night when we drove up, road is very twisty, and narrow.

Loved everything about our experience primitive camping and hiking in Twin Falls State Park!
Kelly H — Google review
Loved the cabin we stayed in (#5), it had everything you'd need to be comfortable. You also have access to all of the resort's amenities. A small pool and hot tub, trails, hikes to a couple of waterfalls, and a fitness room. There is also a restaurant and golf course, splash pad (during summer), tennis courts, and playgrounds. We didn't explore the entire resort but enjoyed our stay. The only downside is that it's a bit of a drive (30 min minimum) to get to other places (restaurants, waterfalls, and other places).

Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park in Parkersburg is a must-visit destination. A cruise down the Ohio River on the Island Belle takes you to this historical museum featuring a mansion and various activities like carriage rides. The grounds are picturesque with beautiful trees, creating a park-like setting. Guided tours of the Blennerhassett mansion replica offer insight into its history.
Our guide was well informed and a gentleman. He played the dulcimer for us which has a very pleasing sound. The property is well maintained and beautiful to view. It does have a snack stand down by the waters edge. The horse and buggy ride was a nice addition to our tour. The paddlewheeler ride to the island was pleasant as well. Highly recommend this tour. Plan on a minimum of 3 hours with the boat ride included.
Marilyn M — Google review
What a beautiful island and mansion! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and we also enjoyed the boat ride to and from the island.
Marsha L — Google review
First time visiting Blennerhassett Island, loved the Island. The only think I would've changed don't going in summer time, very hot and humid. If you want to go inside the big house buy tickets. The other smaller house is empty inside. We did rent bikes that was nice. On the ferry ride over some people bought they own bikes. Gift shop was the only place to get relief from the heat. Parkersburg area seems empty even though homecoming was happening. I would love to visit again but only in fall time.
Ronda R — Google review
I absolutely loved everything about this place. We did the whole package which included the museum, boat ride, horse carriage ride and tour. It was such a beautiful and great experience. I highly recommend for everyone!
Danielle M — Google review
I very much loved touring Blennerhassett Island! The ferry ride was relaxing and had fun facts - there is an upper and lower deck as well as a ramp to get on the boat. It was incredibly hot the day I went but the boat crew boys worked their tail off. The island is beautiful and stroller, wheelchair, and fat person friendly. Everything is in close proximity and flat to walk, much under shade. The gift shop is small and mainly knickknacks but they folks working were INCREDIBLY kind. So were the workers of the booths and wagons. I did not do a wagon ride as I really wanted to get some exercise in and lots of small kids and families on the wagons. My docent was incredible. Knew tons of the history and even threw a few “Hamilton” jokes in. I was also very impressed the island worked hard to say “enslaved people” which is the correct terminology! The house is gorgeous and does have an upstairs to see. Can take pictures without flash. Really enjoyed my time, said about 3 hours on the island. The mainland museum is fun and eclectic collections of local history and Blennerhassett objects. I wish I had done the museum first and then the island, but can be done in either order. Good for any one of any age, but the little kids in my tour group were definitely fidgety in the heat. I went as a single 26 year old woman who loves history and it was a total gem in my trip for a friend’s wedding. Would strongly recommend as it is cheap per person and very walkable!
Abbey J — Google review
What a neat place to spend an afternoon. We enjoyed the horse carriage ride and the history lesson of the island and its structures. We then took the house tour which told about the family that lived there. The stern wheel boat ride to the island was very nice and relaxing!!
Kelly T — Google review
Not often is there an opportunity to visit a historical island, accessible only by ferry. It's a very interesting piece of frontier history, when the wild west was anywhere beyond Virginia. The mansion is interesting, even if if is a facsimile of the original. More important, in my opinion, would be the museum. Full of artifacts through the ages, it give a wonderful link to a world gone by.
Sean O — Google review
Perfect place to spend the afternoon! To get there, you ride a traditional sternwheel ferry. Once on the island it's picturesque. The wagon ride is definitely a must. All the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and really seems to enjoy their job. We got a quick bite at the concession pavilion and the prices were very reasonable. We spent about 3-4 hours touring.

History museum
The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History is a captivating 18th-century Palladian-style mansion located on an island accessible by boat. It serves as the perfect starting point for exploring Parkersburg, offering insights into regional history and the prominent family who once resided on Blennerhassett Island. The museum features archaeological and historic exhibits, along with a compelling video recounting the tragic tale of the Blennerhassett family.
Wow! Really cool! Great collections from members of the community. The artifacts give you insight into daily life from the frontier days all the way through the 20th century. Starting the May 2nd you can get a boat out to the Island where I’m sure there is even more great stuff to see. Cost for the museum I paid was $4; easy money.

We had an amazing time. We purchased the packaged deal for it all and loved it. Our tour guide Devie was terrific. She was very knowledgeable and answered all our groups questions and was so polite. She gave me cold chills telling us about the mansion. We will be coming back for the candle light tour.

Very nice and a family fun place to visit. Can also have a wedding there. Very beautiful in the fall. Does have flushable toliets and water stations as well as a gift shop. Can bring your own lunch for a picnic...lots of tables. Only can get there by boat. I would recommend to visit the museum before you visit the island.
Stacie N — Google review
Parking is a little confusing if you've never been. The museum is amazing! There are multiple floors accessible by stairs or an elevator. Restrooms on site as well as a gift shop. The gentleman at the front desk where we purchased our package tickets was very friendly and helpful!
Ann B — Google review
They offer package deals, mansion tours, ferry ride there and back, horse drawn wagon tours and the museum ticket for $32 a piece. This takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete all 4. I highly recommend for a little getaway.
Jason R — Google review
We took a two day trip to Marietta & Parkersburg WV & it all started with reading David McCullough 's book, "The Pioneers" which is about how the Northwest Territories were settled after the Revolutionary War. The book opened up an understanding of who these people were & how much they sacrificed & worked. Otherwise, it's just another historical site & you walk away with boredom. The Blennerhasset Museum was excellent. I would highly recommend visiting there as well as Blennerhasset Island. There are more historical places to visit as well in Marrietta. Our guide Sandy was terrific!!

Big Muskie Bucket

Nature & Parks
Parks
Not very far from home. Out in the middle of nowhere but worth a trip at least once if you’re not too far from it. Had no idea it existed until a few weeks ago so I was motivated to make the 30 mile trip to see just how big it was. Kids enjoyed walking in. Sad that people have chose to vandalize it by carving in it and spray painting it. Can’t just mindfully observe something and leave without defacing it.
Brian — Google review
I am a lover of quirky roadside attractions and as an Ohioan, this one has been on my list for awhile. About 30 or so miles from Cambridge, you have to take long winding roads to get to it. It is truly in the middle of nowhere. However, it is still worth a stop if you are nearby. The sheer size of this thing is unreal and it is hard to believe it was actually used at one time. It is just so massive. Besides the actual bucket, it has a nice little picnic area, educational boards, and some pretty views. Definitely make sure to stop and check it out if you are nearby and have the time.
Lauren D — Google review
Worth while stop about 10 minutes from the Wilds. If you have time before your safari, go see this first. It will give you perspective as you learn about the land. We had fun taking pictures and appreciated the camera stand. Several displays to read about the people and area. There are restrooms that are not plumbed; latrine style. They were clean and well maintained when we were there.
Angela S — Google review
The bucket is located in a beautiful park. Parking is literally next to the bucket so easily accessible and viewed by every age and ability level. There isn't a lot to see, but is worth the visit. You will never see anything else like this.
Terri C — Google review
There were a few other people there at the same time I was But for being a rainy day, there are quite a few different places to be able to stay dry. Lots of different information and even a covered place to be able to sit down at tables to eat lunch if you wanted to do so. A must-see stop for any operator.
Robert E — Google review
A beautiful drive on a winding hilly paved country road to an amazing site. The bucket is huge and the chain links are massive. Great for taking pics. The small park is well kept with a great view and restrooms.

There was a lot of history right there!! I'm just getting into heavy equipment and found it extremely fascinating with how big the bucket it and imagining how big the machine was that could operate something that big!!

Had a tour of the station and a ride on the train while visiting for the Ohio Museums Association conference. It was a great time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ride seemed very kid friendly and we got a great guided tour of the surrounding areas while I took the ride.
Scot P — Google review
My husband and I went on the Fall Foliage train ride and it was beautiful. The views are amazing. The gift shop is very nice with different drinks and snacks you can bring aboard the train. Getting your tickets is easy and the train depot is really cool. The ride is very interesting and you learn about the history of the area. The only thing we didn't like was how packed each train car was and how close you were sitting to strangers. We got there 45 minutes early, 15 minutes before it said to arrive, and it was already packed. We had difficulty finding the seats we wanted. We rode on the open train car to enjoy the nice weather but we had to sit on a bench shoulder to shoulder next to other people. They definitely need to have a max capacity that allows people to have some space. They shouldn't allow us to have to be that cramped together. We definitely will arrive even earlier next time. Other than that, I recommend it.
Bryanna M — Google review
If you've never been on a train and want to say you have been, this is an inexpensive way of doing that. However, this is not what my friend and I had expected. The trip was not very "scenic" unless you enjoy seeing rundown backyards and trash piles. I understand the railway cannot control the public, but I wouldn't say this is scenic. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. The windows do not lock in place and can be dangerous. Several windows in the car we were in slammed shut from the vibrations of the train, thank goodness no one was hurt. The small town, can't remember the name, wasn't much to look at either and the "gift shop" there was a joke. But it was an inexpensive way to kill a couple of hours, just wouldn't do it again.
Sharina S — Google review
If you ever want to say you went on a train ride this is the perfect and inexpensive spot to do that. There were more views of people's backyards and work equipment than beautiful views but still really cool to see and do. The colors were beautiful since it was fall. We also stopped at a small village which was pretty cool.
Stephanie G — Google review
Great fall day adventure at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Good size train and the vintage passenger cars from 1921 were well maintained. The volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They also offer Christmas and Easter time rides, as well as a New Years Eve celebration 🍾 ride. It is a non-profit organization, and they welcome donations in any amount to keep up with the maintenance.
Tim V — Google review
The experience wasn’t what I expected, especially with it being $85. I don’t want to be too harsh with my review, since I love that they provide this experience to the public. All the staff were friendly and seemed to enjoy being there! Inside of the trains were clean and they had a vintage feel. The seats were comfortable and had a lot of leg room. Like a lot of the other reviews, I also was disappointed and the views. You see a lot of run down housing and trash. I understand that Hocking Valley Scenic Railway cannot control this, but wanted others to make others aware that most of the sites are not attractive. The biggest disappointment to me was the re-enactments. We paid for a ride that included reenactments, but every single performance was performed at the back and since the performers did not have microphones we could not make out a single word that was being said. I think this should be taken into consideration for future rides. Maybe have them do one reenactment at the front, then one at the back, so all riders are included or even some type of microphone. Overall, it we are glad we did it since we had been wanting to for awhile, but it isn’t something we would go back for a second time.

We had a wonderful relaxing ride on the train. It was a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it making it a part of your visit to the area

Cedar Falls

Scenic spot
Hiking Trails
Nestled in a serene setting, The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls offers a variety of accommodations including cabins, cottages, yurts, and geodomes. The yurts are particularly appealing to glamping enthusiasts with their spacious design featuring a king-sized bed and tiled shower. A visit to Cedar Falls on a Friday morning revealed a moderately busy parking lot with easy access to the falls via stairs and narrow rocky paths.
Beautiful trail and very easy to trek. When it's dry it is super family friendly. There's one slightly awkward 10 feet of trail past the falls back to the parking lot on the one way path but it's easy besides that. My kids did it in cross and we're totally fine. Just be cautious as it's a trail with rocks so watch your step. Absolutely beautiful and worth the short 1/2 mile walk from the lot.
Joshua S — Google review
Pretty great! Lots of stairs but a beautiful area and falls. Knocked a star off because the problem are the people who wade and swim in the water ruining a nice photo despite many signs saying you should not. Still very nice area! Watch walking across the stream as I witnessed many fall.
Dale P — Google review
Cedar Falls is one of the more peaceful spots in Hocking Hills. The walk to the falls is a treat in itself, with all the big hemlock trees and lush ferns. You can hear the water before you even see it, which just builds the anticipation. When you get there, it’s just a beautiful cascade of water pouring down over the rock cliff into a clear pool. It's not the tallest waterfall, but it's one of the prettiest. I loved just sitting on a rock and taking in the sound of the water and the cool mist. It’s the perfect place to just stop and relax for a bit, a definite highlight of the park.

Super cool! We were here in early October; the day befjre the falls were bone dry but after the 24 hours of rain it was spectacular!!pretty easy hike. Some stairs. Some narrow spots.
David K — Google review
Fun trail to get to the waterfall. It's a treat once you get to it, it's a great place to relax. Easy to make your way to the waterfall and snap some memorable pictures. Not too busy. If you're going with little kids in strollers then it's not accessible. You will have to carry them in your arms. Not wheelchair accessible either. There are different trails you can take. The shortest one is to the falls and back to the lot. Probably around 0.6 miles. Very doable and fun.
Hamza V — Google review
The trail is quite easy & enjoyable. Like walking into Narnia . The falls are magical. But there were to many people that don't know how to read . do t get in the water. Your dirty self will get in the water & everyone else up stream , is doing their deed, so it's coming down on you .
Pablo V — Google review
Cedar Falls is exceptional. The trails are picturesque and very well maintained. Other than some stairs to the exit, it is a very easy hike.
Tyler C — Google review
relatively small trail for cedar falls so the area by the waterfall tends to get crowded. i also would avoid doing after rain as stuff gets slippery and muddy. saw lots of people slip and fall but the scenery is beautiful.

Hocking Hills Canopy Tours is an outdoor adventure company offering a variety of thrilling activities for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy zip line and Segway tours, as well as other exciting options. The X-Tour zip line is a popular choice, providing an amazing experience with knowledgeable and engaging guides. The Hocking Hills Golf Club also offers a challenging Par-71 course set amidst the beautiful Hocking Hills scenery, providing an affordable yet rewarding golfing experience.
We did the Original Canopy Tour and it was incredible! Skyler and Ella were amazing instructors and guides. The tour starts out with getting geared up and a practice run that is not far off the ground. They teach you everything you need to know for the course. The course was about 10 zip lines and 3 sky bridges so it was worth it for the time spent on this adventure. Ella and Skyler were also great entertainment while we were up there. They remembered everyones names, gave us fun facts and even had some funny jokes to entertain us. My son is 10 years old and he had an absolute blast! I personally am terrified of heights but felt so comfortable with Ella & Skyler that I almost forgot how high up we were. Maria was also great - she took us to and from the course and was an excellent driver. We would definitely do this adventure again. Well worth it!

Beautiful experience The tour was very well organized. Carl and Ella both were exceptional in explaining, supporting and encouraging all of us through the zipline tour. We enjoyed it thoroughly. The price may seem high but once you reach and go through the 2.5 hours awesome experience then you will totally forget about the money and take a boatload of great experience with you. Thanks Carl and Ella once again for making the tour awesome.

Unbeatable experience.. It’s one of the best Zipline tours I’ve been on. Canopy tours operations department really had styled in. I had a low bar set, but I was thoroughly impressed. It is truly World class. Speaking from an operational perspective, They nailed all the details, from harness us up to safety checks, to smooth, professional tour guides, they even watered the dusty roads down, so you don’t get caught and clogs of dust when being shuttled back-and-forth from line to line.. Thoroughly impressed special shout out to my guidance Riley and Ian.. they were fantastic. I will definitely take my family back sooner than later.

My wife and I came here to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and let me tell you… this place was the BEST. The views and experience were incredible, and the group we were paired up with were a delight. If I could give both of our guides 6 stars I would. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Justin and Xandra were incredible, hilarious, and made the experience an absolute blast, while communicating enough to make us feel safe the entire experience. Thank you to those two especially and I know we’ll be back in the future!

Our guides - Justin and Alexa - were extraordinarily fun, helpful, patient and above all else, kept us safe (from ourselves). They made an excellent team, you could tell they enjoyed working with each other. We will definitely be back at some point. 🙌

Skylar and Riley were amazing tour guides! They made our zip-lining experience absolutely unforgettable. They’re super fun, have great personalities, and kept us laughing the entire time with their jokes. The only thing I wish is that they took a few more pictures while we were out on the tour, but overall, it was an incredible experience. You won’t be disappointed! Definitely purchase the X Tour! Loved all the people we met. Would definitely do it again:)

I had a great time. The staff was so wonderful and friendly except for one of the guys who helps bring you in once you land. He offered the woman who went down with me to help take a photo of her. Since he didn't offer me the same treatment. I took it apon myself to take my own photo. Then he looked over at me a raised his voice a bit at me and told me to move behind the red gate! I replied and said "I will after I take my photo in which you did NOT offer to assist me with. He didn't offer the other ladies a photo either. On a side note, I wish they offer videos or photos for the superman zipline tour customers. Overall I had a blast!

Rock House

Points of Interest & Landmarks
This was a unique experience! Our family had a lot of fun visiting Rock Bridge. I have older children, they seemed to get around on this trail very well. However, there are a few spots you should take caution ⚠️ too, especially with younger children under the age of ten. Overall, this was a great sight to see. We will be going back again.
Brittany P — Google review
For the most part this trail was easy but getting in/out the Rock House itself could be a challenge for some and there is an uphill portion at the end. We started from the second parking lot as we didn’t know it was different from the first lot. Great hike! Watch for pigeons/poop in the rock house.
Nicole R — Google review
Beautiful cave/natural tunnel. Very large so even if its busy there is plenty of room for everyone to be inside of the rockhouse. This is a one way trail and the uphill climb after you view the rockhouse to the exit may be strenuous for those not used to hiking. The natural bridge/arch was closed but still viewable and such a unique natural structure in the area.
Jennifer W — Google review
Wonderful trail to a covered cave. Really neat experience to be in the cave and imagine what has happened in the cave over the last couple of hundred years. Pigeons and pigeon poop inside of the cave so be extra careful where you place your hands. Parts of the trail were challenging to walk, so be extra careful. I would recommend a sturdy walking stick to help with your balance. The last quarter mile or so back to the parking lot is a steady uphill walk on a dirt path . You made need to take a couple of short breaks to catch your breath. Also take a small flashlight with you to help see inside and walk around while inside the cave. The camera flashlight was ok but it was not bright enough. The walk and time spent in the cave took about 1.5 to 2 hours which was well worth it to be able to see some of the amazing works of our Creator.
Timothy D — Google review
Totally awesome! The first park of the yellow hike is mostly downhill. Then after reaching the rock house cave, you head back uphill. The walk is not terribly long and the footing is mostly steady, but some parts are a little sandy. Coming uphill is a little strenuous but there's room to stop. The sights through out are beautiful!!

A visit to Hocking Hills is incomplete without experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Rock House. This natural tunnel, carved into a Blackhand sandstone cliff, is an awe-inspiring spectacle. The cavernous opening, with its seven gothic-like archways, feels like entering a hidden world. Sunlight filters through the trees above, casting an ethereal glow on the moss-covered rocks and creating a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The sheer scale and intricate details of the rock formations are a testament to the power of nature. Standing inside, you feel small and humbled by the ancient geology surrounding you. It's a truly amazing and beautiful stop, a must-see for anyone exploring the wonders of Hocking Hills.

Love this hike! The rock house itself is really cool to walk through and explore. I took my 8, 6, and 4 year old and they loved it too. The last part of the trail is a steep incline up but my kids were able to do it, just had to go slow. Went on a Monday and pretty much had the trail to ourselves.
Courtney H — Google review
It was really cool, you could see for quite a ways, and get some great pics. Careful of all the pigeons, for some reason a whole lot of them came flying in at the same time at one point while we were looking around. Luckily no accidents! Lol!

We are on a mission to see all of Ohio's "World's Largest" and this one is probably the main one Ohio is known for. It was much bigger than I expected and quite a sight to see. It is easy to get to off the highway and a good place for a photo op. Very cool to finally see this in person.

This is a fun little stop to make every year or so for pictures. I'm not sure if the building is even open anymore but the grounds still seem to be decently kept up.

Whether you appreciate architecture or simply want to immerse yourself in something extraordinary, the Basket Building is a must-see destination.

This building used to be the Longaberger basket company in Newark, Ohio. It was built to resemble a picnic basket. The business closed some years ago, but the building is still a city landmark.

Well it's abandoned and it's a world record so you get a two for one deal with this gem. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing by. It's huge (that's what she said) and you can see it from the street. You have to park off the road and walk up to the building. No one is cutting the grass or tending to the yards so it's kind of out of control. It smells like dog poop around the building and I'm sure strays are using it as their litterbox.

The Dawes Arboretum

Arboretum
Nature & Parks
The Dawes Arboretum, established in 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, spans over 1,800 acres and features a historic home. The arboretum showcases various plant collections including crab apples, conifers, oaks, azaleas, and hollies. It offers a plethora of educational experiences and miles of trails for walking, driving or biking through beautiful landscaping and gardens.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Dawes Arboretum, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The sprawling 1,800-acre property offers a serene escape into nature, showcasing a diverse collection of beautiful trees, plants, and flowers meticulously curated for visitors to enjoy. The Arboretum's well-maintained walking trails allowed me to explore various themed gardens, each presenting its own unique charm. The Japanese Garden was particularly stunning, with its tranquil pond and traditional architectural elements creating a peaceful oasis. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, adding depth to my understanding of the plant species and conservation efforts. Additionally, the interactive exhibits in the visitor center were engaging and informative, making the trip both educational and enjoyable. Overall, The Dawes Arboretum is a fantastic destination for nature lovers and families alike, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and learning. Whether you're interested in horticulture or simply seeking a serene day out, this arboretum is a must-visit.

"Dawes Arboretum is an absolute treasure! Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll, a challenging hike, or a beautiful place to learn about nature, this place has it all. The diverse plant collections, including the stunning Japanese Garden and the unique cypress swamp, offer something new to discover with every visit. I especially love the auto tour for a relaxed experience, and climbing the observation tower for that amazing view of the hedge letters is a must. It's clear how much care goes into maintaining the grounds. A truly enriching and beautiful experience for all ages!"

My wife and I visited Columbus recently and I found out about this place after looking for something peaceful and pleasant to do outdoors on our way home as we always do on road trips. Before we stopped we had some idea of the scale of this place, but when we actually got there it was truly mind blowing. The grounds are so vast and so beautiful we spent the entire day and learned a lot about trees and the various plants. I also booked a tour of the house ahead of time. We learned a lot of history on the tour and our guide was extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. Plus the tour itself is very detailed and they show you more of the house than I was expecting (including an amazing surprise in the basement). I can’t recommend highly enough. It’s a lot of walking because the grounds cover thousands of acres all of which is absolutely stunning, so plan accordingly. There is also an “auto tour” around the arboretum, with places along the way to pull off and take in the sights and fresh air. It’s amazing the dedication and care that all of their marvelous staff puts into maintaining this treasure including past caretakers (who are thoughtfully and graciously memorialized in one of the outbuildings telling you about the history of the arboretum and the people who established it). Some of the cool things that we saw there have inspired us in our own gardening endeavors at home as well. We will be returning again and again! We absolutely LOVED The Dawes Arboretum. I told all of my family about it as well, because I think everyone should enjoy their splendid green spaces, fresh air, and tall trees (especially for how low the price of admission was). If you’re a tree lover, a gardener, or you just appreciate the great outdoors and aesthetic beauty in general, this is the place for you. Actually it’s the place for everybody, because it is impossible not to find peace, tranquility, and harmony while strolling their forested trails and beautiful gardens. We could all use some of that in our lives and the Dawes Arboretum certainly provides.

We are traveling in the area. Decided to check this place out. So happy we did. I know we missed things. So we will be back here before we leave. They have paved and dirt trails. Have a little gift shop. Employees were very knowledgeable and helpful. Plenty of parking.

A naturalist led the Mushroom Walk. She was knowledgeable and nice. My son really wanted to know which mushrooms were edible and she answered all his questions. Once she said to ID a fungus property would take some more work and I thought that was respectable for a walk without tools etc. The bathrooms at the gift shop / discovery center were clean. The trails were well maintained and the discovery center was interesting and designed with kids in mind.

10/20/2024 - My family and I visited The Dawes Arboretum over the weekend. It was amazing and an unforgettable experience. There are about 12-14 miles to hike on their beautiful scenic area. You may also drive through The Dawes Arboretum where vehicles are permitted. There are all types of trees, plants, flowers, and a few wildlife. Every path you encounter and every step you take is a scene. You will also see artistry within the arboretum. There are designated parking lots throughout the arboretum for you to park and get out to explore. Per the staff member/greeter at the entrance, it is about 12-14 miles of a hike to see the entire Arboretum. There are also educational facilities within the arboretum along with a visitor center, and museum. You may bring your four-legged friends. Family space to make memories with nature. Nice and friendly staff. Cost to enter is 10.00. Enjoy.

Adena Mansion & Gardens Historic Site

Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
Adena Mansion & Gardens Historic Site is a significant estate in Chillicothe, Ohio, originally belonging to Thomas Worthington, the state's sixth governor. The mansion was completed in 1807 and has been meticulously restored to reflect its original appearance when the Worthington family lived there. The tour of this historic site provides an immersive experience, guided by knowledgeable historians who share insights into the family's life and the region's history during the 1800s.
This place is great for those who appreciate early Ohio history. It gives us a slice of how Ohio became a state and how Thomas Worthington was instrumental during the process. The house was constructed by Thomas Worthington around 1803 and still stands in much the same way it did then. They have a museum that gives great background on the Worthington family and a house tour that last about 45 minutes. The grounds are beautiful and you can view the overlook that the Ohio State Seal was derived from. Tickets are $12 per person and well worth every penny! We have a rich history in Ohio and this place is a hidden gem right in our backyard!
Steve W — Google review
My 9 year old daughter and I toured the house and museum today. Quoting my daughter, "I LOVED it!" The grounds are beautiful, the house is so well preserved and the museum is interactive. Our tour guide was fantastic and really knowledgeable yet even kept a 9 year olds attention for an hour and half. Great place to check out to learn more about Ohio's early history.
Arden S — Google review
Nice visitor center with artifacts and great information on the history of the house and land. Tour guide was nice and very knowledgeable. Wish the garden area and grounds had been more kept up but they were working on it.
Carol S — Google review
Disappointing experience. I was so pumped to see a key piece of Ohio history, but I knew something was up when I saw a handful of people standing outside the visitor center. I looked through the doors to see that it was locked due to giving a guided tour, and a note said they'd be back soon (not a set time). I wonder if it was ultimately due to staffing issues After giving it some time, it was clear that I could not tour the mansion in my allotted timeframe, so I drove to the overlook, took in the Great Seal, and left. For such an important part of our state's history, this is unacceptable and the people of Ohio deserve better.
Maicon P — Google review
I toured this with a group. It was lovely. Beautiful! The tour was a lot of walking and stairs. It was worth it, but gosh.
Rhonda E — Google review
Wonderful visitor center with child friendly museum exhibits and clean restrooms greet you at Adena. The mansion tour is extremely interesting with the history of the Worthington family, several Ohio governors, two American presidents, and the Shawnee war chief Tecumseh interwoven with the history of the collections and the mansions architects and builders.

Took a mini vaca this week while kids were on fall break and went to hocking hills. Stayed in the Marriott in Chillicothe. During our stay the hotel worker suggested we check out this place. Didn’t really know anything about this place or that it even existed so we took the suggestion and went not really knowing what to expect. We went on Thursday. So glad we did! The tour was excellent and we learned so much that we didn’t really know before. Just being on the grounds that significant historical figures like Tecumseh once graced with their presence is something else! I came not really knowing who Thomas Worthington was and left knowing a whole lot more! Of course I had heard of Tecumseh and just knowing he stayed here is reason enough to come! Much of the house is original including much of the floors and the pave stones outside. They have a museum with the actual peace pipe tomahawk Tecumseh gave to Worthington as a symbol of peace, which is really cool! So you do timed guided tours and fyi the last tour before lunch is 11:30 and then tours resume at 1:30. I got there right at 11:30 and had to wait until 1:30. That’s ok because there are things you do on your own like explore the museum, barn, garden, so we were able to fill the time. They don’t have food except a couple snack items in gift shop so don’t come hungry. The tour guide was great and very informative and gave plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Beware that the house is very cold. Wear long sleeves or layers. They are unable to change the temperature. Didn’t really get a clear cut answer why the house is so cold other than that it’s cold and they can’t change the temperature. I asked if it’s haunted but the tour guide swears it’s not. Hmmmmm….. Either way this is a great little day thing to do with your kids and family, friends, or even alone and gives you the opportunity to step back in time!

Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center - Mound City Group

Mentioned on
2 lists
Park
Sights & Landmarks
When visiting Chillicothe, Ohio, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center is an essential stop for anyone interested in the rich history of the region. This park showcases the Mound City Group, which consists of 23 impressive earthen mounds constructed by the Hopewell culture between 200 BC and 500 AD. These mounds served important ceremonial purposes and offer a fascinating insight into the complex social and spiritual lives of the Hopewell people.
Despite the heat, this is still one of our favourite places to visit in OH! Sun umbrellas were offered for our use as we walked the site. Clearly marked trails, mowed grass make for an easy walk. Plan on spending at least a couple of hours if you can!
Jess B — Google review
The Hopewell Culture and Visitor Center is a smaller center. It does have some souvenirs and you can get your passport stamps here. There is a slight walkthrough in the center to see all the different Earth mounds and a video to watch. They also have all of the different flags for the Indian Nations and a small description for each. You can then walk out of the back of the Visitor Center when done looking at the displays. You will immediately see the mounds as soon as you walk out. You're also able to walk around the entire area.
Daniel G — Google review
What an incredible historical site! A great little museum/history center of the Hopewell culture as well as local life through the years. The building is completely handicapped accessible, and it's mostly a flat grassy area for the rest of the place. Give yourself about an hour. Worth a visit!
Stephen F — Google review
Everyone should come enjoy this small national park! You won't spend an awful lot of time here, so it's even good for kids. The workers at the information desk are friendly and have lots of information and pamphlets to give you. There are many mounds here, and some of them have information signs explaining their significance. There's plenty of parking and clean restrooms here.
Thirteendays — Google review
This park is really impressive. The mounds are amazing. There is a small visitors center with video and a gift shop. There are trails outside with different information boards to read. I have very limited mobility and get around on an electric scooter. I could go as far as the sidewalk. They did have an off road wheel chair that you can borrow to go on the trails. That was really nice to see.
Cat L — Google review
This was my first visit to this National Historic Park area. Excellent presentation of indigenous (native) peoples ingenuity and sophisticated culture before the Europeans arrived. The Mound City group is just one of several sites in the newly designated World Cultural Heritage area. Make sure you see this and the other sites to truly experience the mounds and other earthworks of the Hopewell culture that flourished in the central and southern Ohio landscape.

I stopped by her after visiting Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers. This place has a lot of hidden history going back 2000 uests. Thete are 22 mounds here of differemt sizes and some of different shapes. When here walk the signage trail ti the river and read all the signs. The place is free.

Visited 7/11/23 The National Park Service manages several Hopewell mound sites in the Chillicothe area. The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park's visitor center is located at Mound City Group and is the only site that has a full facility with a museum, gift store, restrooms and helpful rangers. Despite this site's name "Mound City Group", this site was not a residential area but rather a burial and ceremonial ground. Anyone fascinated with ancient mounds and earthworks needs to visit this site. And if your travel plans include seeing all the earthworks in the Chillicothe area, see this one first to give you a better understanding of what you will be seeing at some of the other sites where the earthworks no longer exist but are only outlined by mowing the grass on the ground where they once stood. The museum and park rangers will also provide valuable information about the people who created and utilized these structures. We arrived around 3pm and were told that we could join a ranger led tour that started shortly after. Ranger Sue was so informative! I learned so much!

Met Officer Mark today; thank you for counting to enjoy what you do! My love for the State of Ohio goes pretty deep, rooted here if you will. Slate Run is worth every trip.

I've been to Slate run many times, with and without my family. It has been an enjoyable experience until this visit. Our family decided to go to get our holiday photos for a card. The kids sat on fences and in front of barns. The big work horses were brought out and the site volunteer mocked is for being on the hog fence, as we were going to get manure on us. There wasn't any manure near and no signs to let us know to avoid this particular fence. It was done for a laugh from the small audience watching the horses. The volunteer ruined the morning for my kids who were very embarrassed and wanted to immediately leave. Shame on you and your assinine behavior to children.

Such a cute family experience! The male farmer was very kind and asked us if we had any questions and told us a little about his job. We couldn’t access the pig area due to it being overrun with a hornets nest but we peaked inside. They display a lot of neat old farm equipment. Everything has signage if necessary and it’s very well maintained.

I think the first time I visited the working historical farm was in 1989. It is a true gem and Ohio treasure! It's a self guided tour while volunteers work the many aspects of the farm! All buildings (there are a LOT) are marked and you can follow the map. There is an alphabetized map for kids (as and adults) and so much to see and learn. No two days are the same! Plenty of parking and new restrooms! The work horses were being used today! So very much to see and it's very much like stepping back in time! In addition, I cannot say enough good things about the farm manager Ann, and her entire staff!! They work very hard physically and they are a wealth of information of how farms operated over a century ago. Kudos to all and thank you for allowing future generations to get a priceless look back in time!!

What a wonderful place this is! My daughter and I truly enjoyed the opportunity to step back into history and learn about the 1880s farm life. It brought me a lot of nostalgia when I remembered my Grandmother and Grandfather's farm from when I was a little girl. It was a lot like this farm. They have many hands on interactive learning areas that my daughter loved especially. Definitely worth the trip! We will be going back in the spring to see the planting season.

Truly a peaceful and wonderful experience that really reminds you to slow down and experience everything. Such a beautiful place.

This is a very “real” working farm, filled with tons of opportunities to learn and explore, from the orchard to the smoke house and root cellar, to the barn and main house filled with period pieces. This is a great place for kids to get hands on experience with some farm animals. One note: the park employees in this area are in historical dress, but are not historical actors/interpreters. That said - they were very friendly and filled with great info!

Just look at the pictures, been coming here for years! I came hoping they would have apples 🍏 🍎 but not yet, but I got some amazing snickerdoodle cookies, 🍪 some sweet roasted almonds & pecans🥜(you have to go try if you like these) the best! I got some 🍑 (Georgia) they were so good. The bake barbecue chips were good. Everything I got was delicious. I am going back when the apples are ready. They have the best big 🍎 🍏 apples! The people 👩👵are very nice. Go out to the country side & experience it.💖

I have been here numerous times. They carry many ohio made specialties. Meats, cheeses, maple syrup, pastries, and local produce. They are usually closed Dec-Feb. Otherwise, they have various hours depending on the season. They grow over 25 different types of apples. You can pick your own or a bag that is ready to go. They have samples of the apples so you can taste them before buying. During weekends it can be quite busy. There is a large parking lot with dedicated handicapped spots. The staff is very helpful and polite.

First time coming here to their sunflower field and it was beautiful! We also checked out their market and they had some good produce. Can’t wait to come back during the fall to pick apples and to check out their pumpkins!

We came for the sunflowers and bought many products from the farm. It was a nice market and not far from Columbus. Would recommend 😻

You can buy the produce at the market or pick your own on the farm. Different times of the year offer different produce. I typically only go in the fall and usually only to the market. You can get a wide variety of apples in the fall with my favorite being Pixie Crunch. In the market they carry many products from other local groups such as breads, pies, cheese, meats, as well as their own jellies, jam, salsa and more. Just outside of the market are other vendors selling items such as popcorn and nuts, and this year there was one selling pizza. I always buy a mum here as they are huge and beautiful and at a really good price. There are activities for kids around the market and across the street is a corn maze. You could definitely make a day out of a visit here. There are bathrooms (portojohns) and a paved parking area. The parking lot fills up quickly on the weekends, but there is plenty of overflow parking available. Credit cards are accepted at the market, but I dont know about the vendors outside or the rest of the farm.

Lynd fruit farm has a fantastic selection of apples 🍎, fruits, jellies, vegetables, flowers and more. Customer service is excellent & knowledgeable. Fantastic place to spend some time and find great food. You can self pick apples and other fruit in season or purchase in their store. Well worth the drive to Pataskala OH. Very family friendly.

The farm offers a fantastic U-Pick Apple experience across vast orchards and features a dedicated Maze Fest area with a corn maze, bounce houses, and a barrel train. The experience is perfect for making family memories. The market is a must-visit for seasonal treats. Patrons rave about the freshly pressed cider and the impressive selection of homemade goods, including popular items like apple butter and the unique 'Traffic Jam' berry blend.
