Brantley Lake State Park

Lake
Nature & Parks
Kayaking & fishing on Brantley Lake, plus camping, hiking & birdwatching in the surrounding park.
Brantley Lake was the most peaceful park, so quiet and serene. Staff was very nice and helpful, Ray was very informative about the park and local attractions. The bathrooms were very clean and had a heater for the cold weather. Can’t say enough good things about this park, 10/10 will be coming again.
Lily C — Google review
Very helpful person at the entrance gate Sites are nicely spaced and fairly level. It's a very pleasant campground to stay in for visiting Carlsbad Caverns, Sitting Bull Falls, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Greg M — Google review
Want to say a couple of things about Brantley State Park: if you have ever camped in the desert in the summer, you know two things: lots of bugs and it's very hot. Brantley State Park staff take incredible time and care to clean the campsites and showers. The showers are free and clean. The bathrooms have a working AC running, giving you a cool place to shower and cool down. The toilets are clean and the stalls have no bugs in them. Very few crawl around. The bathrooms have plugins where we could charge our fans (which I highly recommend having in the summer months). There are tarantulas and snakes nearby but we never had any close calls near our tent. It's been wonderful camping here even if the desert makes it difficult. Thank you to the staff who take care of this park.

The best state park campground that we’ve been to. Affordable. Picnic tables are covered. Great views of the lake. Bathrooms have been recently renovated. Good running and mountain biking trails (short paths for mountain biking). Convenient distance to Carlsbad Caverns.

Bottomless Lakes State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park features several sinkhole-formed lakes with water sport activities, plus hiking trails.
We called to see what the chances were there was a spot open for just one night. We got lucky and were pleasantly surprised by this cute tucked away spot. A very desert appeal with a beautiful natural lake against the red rock cliffs. A great family swimming hole and we’ll walk the short mile hike this morning.
Marsha G — Google review
It's a place that looks beautiful from a distance, but when you get there, it's not. Entrance costs $10 per car, whether you're entering or leaving. The sand is muddy, and the water is still flowing. I don't recommend swimming. If you're going to barbecue, I recommend getting up early. I think it's the only place within a 100-mile radius that the locals have to enjoy.
Luis — Google review
We went during the week on a Tuesday. It was empty for the most part. Very pleasant and quiet. We picked a shaded picnic area and spent 4 hrs just enjoying the scenery and cool water of Lea lake. It was a 90° day but the breeze was perfect! Amazing geology!
Patrick N — Google review
My family and I had a wonderful time camping here! We stayed in a tent at the campground and really enjoyed how spacious it was. We booked a site with electric and water hookups, plus our spot included a picnic table and some nice shade. The restroom and shower facilities were clean and the showers had good pressure and plenty of hot water, which was soothing after a long day outdoors. During our stay, the campground was peaceful, with everyone keeping to themselves and no noisy campers around. The only odd thing was that someone (likely a park employee) decided to use a leaf blower at 5am, circling the park and waking everyone up. That was definitely unexpected! Other than that, the park itself is absolutely beautiful and full of scenic trails, rocky canyons, and great photo opportunities for anyone who loves nature and wildlife. The lakes are clear and refreshing, with designated swimming areas. We also saw park rangers making their rounds, keeping everything in check, which made us feel safe. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend visiting or camping here, especially in the Fall season.
Texas W — Google review
This was a nice, quiet park to stay in while we visited the Roswell area. There is a Camp Host, and Bathrooms were attended to daily. Each site had a standing charcoal grill just outside of a covered picnic table. There was a nice boardwalk across the street, and the lake/ beach were empty (we stayed during the week M-W) Also, there was dispersed camping outside of the Lea Lake Campground, near the Visitor Center. We did not go into the visitor center though! A good place to stay for travelers needing some rest :)
A L — Google review
It may have been due to visiting near the end of the season, but the area appeared somewhat run-down. Several buildings had broken windows, and both the restroom and play area were infested with wasps. The highlight of the visit was the beautiful view of the lake framed by striking red cliffs. We also discovered another lake within the park; however, it was mostly dried up and had a noticeable sulfur odor.
Travis D — Google review
Such a fun place to visit. They have a swimming area with paddle boats, picnic tables, nice, clean restrooms, and a really cute pavilion. If your near Roswell I highly recommend visiting
Tracey R — Google review
Beautiful place, with clear water and lovely scenery. Watch out for the racoons at night time. Those little buggers ripped open our tent, to try to get our food in the middle of the night. YIKES! 😬

International UFO Museum and Research Center and Gift Shop

Mentioned on
35 lists
Museum
Gift shop
The International UFO Museum and Research Center and Gift Shop, established in 1991, is located in the heart of Roswell. It focuses on the 1947 Roswell Crush and other UFO incidents. The museum features extensive exhibits documenting stories about UFOs and theories about the Roswell incident. Visitors can explore witness statements, newspaper cuttings, extended essays, homemade models, and mock-ups related to the event. Additionally, it boasts an extensive library with a comprehensive collection of UFO-related materials.
In February 2025, we visited the International UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico. We were on a road trip and visiting National Parks and historical sites in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Carlsbad Caverns National Parks does not allow for any tours after 2:30 PM, so we decided to visit Roswell, NM for the alien attractions. By the time that we arrived at the International UFO Museum, it was closed; nevertheless, the alien decorations and scenery in Roswell were super fun to see. Legend/history has it that an alien landing happened in 1947, and Roswell has been enjoying and benefiting from that legend/history for the past 78 years. Thank you, International UFO Museum of Roswell, New Mexico, for contributing to our amazing Southwestern United States road trip experience. I included pictures of the International UFO Museum and some of the surrounding stores that all have clever alien displays.
John C — Google review
This was a fantastic place to learn about aliens and the history of Roswell. I especially enjoyed the museum’s library wing, which is filled with fascinating alien-related materials as well as historical archives from the region. The main exhibit area was equally impressive, offering an engaging and extensive collection of displays that bring Roswell’s unique history to life.
Travis D — Google review
Visitor Guide: What to Expect at the Roswell UFO Museum If you're planning a trip to the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico, especially because of the legendary 1947 Roswell Incident, it’s worth going in with the right expectations. Much like the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, this is more about myth, inspiration, and lore than hard evidence or high-tech immersion. Let’s start with the basics. The museum has relocated in recent years, and the signage makes it easy to find. Admission is inexpensive, the facility is clean, and everything is easy to navigate on foot. But rather than a traditional museum with interactive exhibits, the experience leans more toward an archive-style presentation with static displays and research materials. About a third of the exhibits focus on the Roswell crash itself, though much of that section is filled with photocopied documents, legal affidavits, newspaper clippings, and personal statements. These are interesting from a historical perspective, but they can also be a bit confusing or inconsistent. For example, one account described an egg-shaped craft on a military truck, while another mentioned four alien beings instead of the commonly reported three. These contradictions are thought-provoking, but they may leave you uncertain rather than enlightened. The museum’s standout feature is its library. For serious UFO researchers or long-time enthusiasts, it’s a goldmine, offering thousands of books, magazines, and original articles. If you’ve got time and curiosity, you could spend days here. But if you’re just a casual visitor looking for a dramatic retelling or visual recreation of the Roswell incident, this may feel underwhelming. That brings us to what’s missing. There’s a crash simulation video reenactment, but it’s not of the 1947 Roswell crash. You obviously won’t find any original debris or declassified documents, only replicas and interpretive summaries. Interactive exhibits are minimal, and while there are a few side rooms with additional content, most of it is modest in scope. Roswell itself is quite isolated, with very little else to do in the area. The museum can be fully explored in two to three hours, and for many visitors, a half-day is more than enough. If seeing it is a lifelong curiosity or bucket-list item, it’s worth the drive. But don’t expect a sprawling entertainment complex. A side note: The front desk staff mentioned to my wife and I that the actual crash site was once open to visitors, but access has been revoked due to repeated issues with disrespectful tourists. Today, it’s just a quiet ranch with no public entry. In the end, I’d rate the museum three out of five stars. One star off because I hoped for a deeper focus on the Roswell crash itself, and another due to the location’s remoteness and lack of surrounding attractions. Final thought: If you’re passionate about UFO history and love digging into primary sources, this place has real value. But if you’re chasing a cinematic experience or looking for definitive answers, you may leave with more questions than when you arrived. Either way, safe travels, and keep an open mind.

This is such a fun place to visit whether you are a believer in UFOs or a skeptic. There are so many displays & pictures to read about, so you can make up tour own mind based upon the information provided. You can spend anywhere from a couple hours to all day. Would highly recommend & would happily return.
Tina S — Google review
Fun museum to wander thru! A lot to see & read. There is also a 25 minute video. Good price for admission.
Irene E — Google review
It was great to get to this museum. It is small and easily navigable. Lots of photos and reading, some video, on display, done on a timeline- more of a historical recount of significant events and people, very informative for newbies. My favorite part of the museum was the back wall which displays a quote by Stan Friedman. The gift shop has something for everyone! Parking is easy, the museum has two lots one right next to the building, the other is directly across the street. This really is a must see for anyone interested in the topic. It will take a leisurely one hour to get through it, if you are intent on reading all parts of the exhibit, you will need more time. The museum is located right in the heart of the Main Street of Roswell close to other attractions and restaurants. It is an easy walk in any direction to see other things on your check list.
D H — Google review
This was a walk on your own museum tour. They have every alien ufo encounter documented in binders. You learn as much as you read for yourself! They do allow pets on the tour which is so helpful when traveling with fur buddy’s!!!
J A — Google review
We always look for fun, unconventional attractions in our travels and this museum certainly fit the bill. Doesn't matter if you're a believer or skeptic it's a nice place to visit. There are some cornball displays that will amuse you, and some more serious displays that just might leave you questioning some things. A real highlight of our trip and definitely recommended

Museums
Nestled in the heart of Roswell, New Mexico, the Roswell Museum and Art Center is a vibrant hub for culture and education that has been captivating visitors since its establishment in 1937. Spanning an impressive 50,000 square feet, this dynamic center features a diverse array of exhibits across twelve galleries that celebrate both art and history. Art enthusiasts will delight in the works of renowned Southwestern artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Peter Hurd, and Henriette Wyeth.
Wow. The honk if you don't exist exhibit really spoke to me . The lay out of the bldg is ..... convoluted and the map is not to scale but it's a beautiful place and I honestly prefer to be a little lost in a museum. The pricing is fair and the staff was friendly. There's many different exhibits on display right now, even though two of them are closed currently to be re installed . Writing this before I get to see the planetarium movie , but I'm excited for that as well.
Megan ( — Google review
If you are going to this museum for primarily extraterrestrial related exhibits than you should really save your time and money. Now that is not to say that this museum was a waste of time. The museum was very clean and had excellent exhibits. There were a number of exhibits regarding Native Americans, weapons and the first rockets ever launched by the United States. There is also a very exciting planetary laser show in the auditorium at the museums entrance. The show is held several times a day at set times that you will be informed of at the front desk. There is also a fair amount of interesting art that is on display there. Roswell sure had a lot of extraterrestrial paraphernalia in the town but things like this museum teach you little more about the town. I believe you and your family will have a fun time navigating the exhibits.
Justin T — Google review
This was not the UFO museum, but it was SO much better. So happy we stayed to look around because it was such a well-built museum. Roswell has such a rich and beautiful history and it was so nice to see it preserved here. Please visit this museum if you're in town!
Tina M — Google review
I honestly had no clue what to expect. I just drove to the closest place of interest that my hotel pointed me to. I had fun, it was a bit like a maze and the lady in the gift shop was wonderful to talk to and a wealth of neat facts about the different resident artist. I enjoy history and they had 2 interesting history areas, one on the American west and the other on Robert Goddard. Some of the themed installation were truly imaginative. Would love to come back for the next theme.
Michelle B — Google review
Stunning museum, way more stuff on show then I ever thought. Probably one of the best small town museums I've ever been to, totally worth the entry fee and an hour to walk around in the air conditioning. Huge exhibits to art, science and history. Rocketry room donated by the Goddard's was a fascinating look at the early days of rocket science in America. All sorts of interesting details of the tools and equipment used. Huge number of historical artifacts as well, from ancient New Mexico history, to early guns and weapons used in a range of conflicts, even a couple of suites of armor! Staff was helpful and kind, entire place was clean and cool.
Jesse C — Google review
We spent about an hour and a half here. I wouldn't expect spending anymore time than that. Had some interesting displays and the kids thought about half of them were interesting. Had American west historical stuff along with rocketry history with Robert Goddard and some native American cultural stuff. Worth checking out if you have an hour or so to spend.
Anthony L — Google review
The Roswell Museum was founded in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and opened in late 1937 . This magnificent museum exhibits the art and cultural history of the American Southwest, and also houses a very realistic reproduction of the laboratory or Robert H. Goddard of Worcester, Massachusetts, an early rocketry pioneer. In addition, the museum includes an advanced planetarium and an artist-in-residence program.
Gerry T — Google review
Awesome art and we did a show at the planetarium...me and my wife were only two people in there. It was sad because the presentation put on was awesome! Can't believe more people don't go! The guy who did our viewing was great and really knowledgeable!

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife refuge
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Huge, mellow wildlife refuge with plenty of rare birds & other animals plus unique landscapes.
Very scenic place to come and enjoy some peace and quiet and to slow down and look around at what's around you. There's a 6 mile loop that you can drive thru and along the way there's multiple place to stop with some trails and lookouts. There's also trails near the entrance, like the butterfly trail, which I thought were great. I also saw lots of different kinds of birds throughout the reserve. It's not a busy place, so you can really take your time and enjoy yourself.
Terrin D — Google review
Beautiful grounds with many species of birds, flowers and wildlife. Visitor Center movie is very helpful to ID birds and critters. It was stormy so only stayed near VC. But did walk the Butterfly Trail. Some steps but not too strenuous.

Happened to come across this place headed to mosque del apache and was surprised how neat it was. Gravel road takes you around the loop. Easy to follow. Easy to get the light in your favor for photos. Saw snow geese, sandhill cranes, and hawks. Very active place and the birds make alot of music. Highly recommend 👌

A great drive with easy and dog friendly walks. Very helpful volunteers and a nice gift shop. We bought a t shirt as a gift.

This is a hidden gem.in Roswell. Beautifully maintained with a long driving loop with various stops along the route. We saw many different types of birds while we were there. Be sure to.bring your binoculars!
Joe N — Google review
Our old and outdated GPS took us to an entrance that was closed. That’s nobody’s fault, but when we called the number on the sign, we were told we had to backtrack all the way to Roswell, which was ridiculous. We found our own way to the correct entrance, pulled up to the visitor center, but couldn’t go in as there was a large rattlesnake blocking the door. This was the theme of our visit. Every pull off and scenic view was occupied by at least one rattlesnake and a ton of mosquitoes. We couldn’t get out of the car save for one area. I’m guessing this is a time of year thing and we should have done better research but nothing I saw mentioned an abundance of rattlesnakes in early August. At least the visitor center was actually open, whether anyone could get to the doors or not.
Mark S — Google review
What a beautiful natural area! So much peace and quiet and bird life on the waters! This is a great place for a picnic, a hike, or just some meditation time! The visitor center is absolutely stunning inside and out, and the guide is very friendly and helpful. We got to see a resting owl in the eastern viewing area and baby swallows that had left the nest and were waiting for their mom. This isntruly a beautiful quiet place, and we are glad to come here once in a while for nature photography and a nice picnic.

Clines Corners Travel Center

Truck stop
Shopping
Gift & Specialty Shops
Stopping at Clines Corners has been a family tradition for me since childhood, nearly half a century ago. The gift shop offers a wide variety of merchandise—Southwest, New Mexico, alien, Sasquatch, Native American, and more. It’s also a great spot to stretch your legs on the long drive across the high plains. Prices vary; some items are noticeably higher than at other souvenir stops, while others are still quite reasonable for the 2020s. The site also features an ice cream shop, nearby gas, and RV camping. This wasn’t my first visit, and it certainly won’t be my last.
Bryan R — Google review
Interesting, but something seems off. I wasn't comfortable inside. I know it sounds odd but it's the best words I can use to describe being there. They had a wide variety of candies and snacks and tons of souvenirs. Space and alien focus.
Liz L — Google review
This is definitely an interesting place. When we walked in it kind of stunk and it definitely has a dirty travel center/truckstop feel. There’s still a lot of interesting things to look at and the bathrooms while they were not immaculately clean they were serviceable. The store had a variety of things for tourist to pick up. Easy to get into and out of. Would stop there again.
D B — Google review
Never again ! Don't believe the billboards that you see for 20 miles before you get to this place. Bathrooms are not clean as advertised . If you are a truck driver keep riding nobody here is concerned about you. Showers are not clean at 2:30 pm on a Sunday. Parking lot has trash everywhere.I sure wish I would have kept driving. The only thing I won't complain about is the 2 people that work in the subway very nice and hard working
Brandon L — Google review
What a unique travel stop along historic Route 66! This location is not only visually distinctive, but it’s also a great place to stock up on snacks, souvenirs, and travel essentials. With a wide variety of items and a convenient layout, it makes for a perfect pit stop for travelers exploring the iconic route.
Travis D — Google review
Ladies, this was a very clean bathroom. Neither the doors nor walls go all the way to the floor, so remember to hang your purse on the hook. The store was well-stocked. Long line today, but we were able to check-out at the candy counter.

Please come by my husband works at the subway up here in clines corners and while u are here go get your gas and fudge . Yes the people up here are nice and the restrooms are clean lot's of room for semi's to park and get a bite to eat ar subway please come by and yes they have deals here at subway 😀 😉 😄

Soda refill was $3.00 and fudge is $28 per pound. Also restrooms were out of towels. It's very gimmicky which you experience on your way to the rest room with the fortune teller and medicine man machines.

Wildlife West Nature Park

Zoo
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Opened in 1994, this 122-acre native plant & rescue-animal habitat also hosts performances.
What a wonderful rescue sanctuary for birds and animals who can no longer return to the wild. Very lovely facility, they have a Wild West theme and hold some community events throughout the year. So many interesting stories of how the animals came to live here. They all have names and are happy to see you. We thoroughly enjoyed the paved walkway, we didn't get a chance to do the nature trail walk but will come back another time. We had a great time, it's just off the highway and easy to get to.

This is a must see! We stayed with the harvest host program. The animals are so loved and cared for here. You get to see them up close. The hybrid wolf was my favorite. They have a cute western town set up with great picnic spots and beautiful views of the mountains lovely gardens a trail or two to walk along with the walking path to see the animals is concrete looks like some of it was poured by the local Boy Scout group. The animals are the star of the show! The animals seem to enjoy the people coming to see them. My 9 year old loved this stop so much he wants to run a place like this when he grows up. This is a must see! Being from Massachusetts this was a wonderful way to get immersed into New Mexico’s plants, animals and scenery!
Michelle V — Google review
This place is incredible! They have an impressive array of animals and birds, and the staff is very friendly. My favorite part of this place is that you can tell the staff actually care about the animals - and that the animals genuinely seem to enjoy seeing humans. I felt great supporting Wildlife West and their mission. Highly recommended if you want to bolster your trip with a dose of beautiful nature - while contributing to something you can feel good about. Heidi (the wolfdog) will even come give you a howl! 🐺
Cody D — Google review
We visited a hidden gem of a zoo in Edgewood, not too far from Albuquerque, and had the best time! The place is surprisingly big, and the animals there are so friendly and well taken care of. It honestly deserves way more visitors — we were the only ones there that day, which made the experience peaceful but also a little sad because this amazing place should be shared and appreciated more. You can really tell the animals are happy and used to people. We had so much fun walking around, taking our time, and getting up close to the animals. It’s such a special spot, perfect for a day trip with family or friends. I truly hope more people find out about this zoo — it’s absolutely worth the visit!

My wife found this as a harvest host. An interesting place to stop this nature park takes in wildlife that has been injured and gives them new homes. A very interesting tour. You can see the animals and they’re very well taken care of. They offer room for your RV. They could accommodate a large motorhome along with travel trailers and fifth wheels. There’s no water or electric, but it was a quiet place to rest. Felt very safe in this place it is gated. They open the gate at nine and they are locked at six. They give you a list with an emergency contact number in the event of. In your stay all they ask is for a donation. They do have a nice gift shop.
Scott J — Google review
We went on a Friday an hour before they closed and it was very empty, but we did get to see a lot of animals. The animals are all native to NM but are not necessarily from NM. I wish the glass in some of the exhibits was cleaner. The staff didn't realize we were still in there and locked up before we could leave! Almost got stuck in there with the animals, haha. Maybe don't go too close to when they close.

Amazing place with wonderful owners! Animals are well cared for and friendly and the couple who own the park are super sweet and obviously care deeply for the animals. Highly recommend visiting if in the area, very much worth seeing.

This is an amazing place with many critters to enjoy. The residents are all rescued and are unable to be released into the wild do to injuries or having been imprinted on humans. You wont find a kinder staff. Each animal has its story on a sign on the exhibits along with other educational information. This is a non profit that can use all the help they can get. Please support if you are in the area, or even driving through as it like one minute off of I-40.

Pecos National Historical Park

Historical landmark
Nature & Parks
Former location of an Indian village, Spanish mission, Civil War battlefield & Greer Garson's ranch.
My review is biased: I LOVE anything national park / monument / preserve. This place was really special. It felt off the beaten path. Great store with incredible staff. The trail was perfect for our 10 and 6 year olds. Really great stepping back in time and learning about Native American cultures.
Charles F — Google review
The visitor's center provides a gift shop and an exhibit explaining the history and culture of the Pueblo people who originally lived there, the influence of the Spaniards, and the revolt. The trail is a pleasant hike. Not too difficult. It takes you around the park and you see the remains of a Spanish mission. Great views of the hills surrounding the park.

Another day, another National Park. We were greeted by Ranger Byron and another young lady(can’t remember her name)at the front desk and both were wonderful to meet. They explained all that there was see and explore. My wife and I both enjoy learning history of our country and this one didn’t disappoint. We only walked to the south Pueblo and then drove to the church. It’s so amazing the history in our country and are blessed that we have preserved these for all to enjoy.

Highly recommended! This place was really amazing and the tour was so informative and fun! You definitely need a car for this though! A couple of hours should be enough!

Pecos National Historical Park, formerly Pecos Ruins National Monument, offers a profound glimpse into the layered history of the Southwest. Upon arrival, the sweeping vistas of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains serve as a dramatic backdrop to the ancient adobe walls. Walking the trails, one can trace the outlines of what was once a bustling pueblo, a crucial trading center connecting the Plains Indians with the Pueblo peoples. The sheer size of the former pueblo, with its kivas and multi-story structures, evokes a sense of wonder about the lives that unfolded here centuries ago. The remnants of the Spanish Mission church stand as a stark reminder of the colonial era, a testament to the cultural clashes and exchanges that shaped the region. Though the ruins of the church is of the later smaller mission built in the 1700’s not the original bigger that was burned during the pueblo revolt of the 1600s, it still i an impressive sight. The park's interpretive signs offer insights into the architectural techniques, daily life, and historical events that transpired within these walls. The sense of quietude that pervades the site today allows for a reflective experience, inviting visitors to contemplate the resilience of the indigenous peoples and the complexities of the past. The landscape itself, dotted with juniper and piñon trees, adds to the feeling of stepping back in time. The visitor center at the park provides information, souvenirs, and rest areas where visitors can enjoy the views. The staff are welcoming and helpful. Additionally, there's a section dedicated to the repatriation of Pecos Pueblo ancestors' bodies, which explains the process of returning their remains to be reburied in their ancestral home. A visit to Pecos offers a rich and immersive experience into the history and heritage of the Southwest.

The trail provides stunning views of silver and turquoise mines, making it a unique and memorable ride. Visitors praise the knowledgeable and personable guides who ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for riders of all levels. The hilly and rocky terrain adds an extra element of excitement to the journey, while the sunset ride is described as breathtaking.
Spectacular experience. Best thing I've done in New Mexico! Harold is the easiest and best guide. Was extremely clear and simple about how to ride and enjoy. The trail was surprisingly hilly and Rocky which made for fantastic views but also not your run-of-the mill trail ride. Ups and downs on the trail made it really interesting. 5 in our group and Harold kept an easy eye on all while letting us do the ride andamage the horses. All beautiful horses.
Carol L — Google review
Best time ever! The ride was great the views are amazing. We had not ridden in years, you were given information about what to do and not to do, and it made the ride easy and enjoyable. Brad, our guide, gets all the credit for his knowledge of the area, his knowledge of each individual horse and his own personal experiences that were engaging and interesting. We’d love to come back again-and so will you.

No-frills, humble horseback ride. Definitely not a tourist trap. The instructors are serious about safety. You ride up the mountain to absolutely beautiful views, then back down. Wear jeans, boots, hat/sunblock. Also, it's dusty. It's the desert. If you're not familiar with riding, it may be a little scary. I loved every second!

Edit for 2021: We tried to do a trail ride again during the week of thanksgiving 2021, and made reservations for a specific day. As it turns out the old man on the phone had written down the wrong date, and when we called to double check we were met with hostility. “I don’t need you people to tell me what to do” direct quote. And then he cancelled our reservation altogether and did not refund us. Amazing experience. Lovely guides and beautiful trails. I recommend going in the morning when it is cooler during the summer. Loads of fun for all experience levels

This was so fun and such a pleasure to experience. The horses were gorgeous, friendly, and well cared for. Harold is an absolute legend/was a great tour guide and made riding even more enjoyable. I would suggest this experience for anyone who wants to ride and check out the scenery!

I took my 10 year old daughter for an 1hr and 15 minute ride and couldn't have experienced anything better. We were both inexperienced riders and our guide was very informative and made us feel comfortable. It was absolutely beautiful and we had an amazing time. Definitely an unforgettable experience.

We read some of the reviews before we came however I say no matter what always give an individual a chance and go off of your own opinion. Harold was amazing, very personable, gave us a great tour, his lessons while on that tour have surpassed many lessons that I received when horseback riding at other places. I learned so much from him. The sunset ride that we went on and the trail was absolutely breathtaking and he offered to take our picture at the top for us. Thanks for going above and beyond Harold you definitely have our business when we come back to Santa Fe and we let the in know about you as well for great recommendations.

El Rancho de las Golondrinas is a living Spanish village that offers a glimpse into the past with its hacienda, village store, and schoolhouse. Visitors can enjoy a private tour led by knowledgeable and engaging guides who provide hands-on experiences for both kids and adults. The focus is on teaching and sharing local history, allowing visitors to touch almost everything in the re-created buildings. The freshly baked bread from traditional ovens is a must-try.
Fantastic walk but bring a water bottle because it’s a lot of walking especially for a hot summer day, don’t worry tho as they have refill stations to keep you hydrated. I enjoyed talking to the staff dressed 18th-century Spanish colonists they give live demonstrations depending on when you visit: like weaving, baking, or blacksmithing. , and walking through it truly feels like stepping back in time. I enjoyed the most tasting the fresh baked bread and the detail of the small class room with informative discussions about how students would divide their day between house work and school. This walking experience between location to location adds a sense of peaceful and emerging experience to the museum. A good stop for anyone visiting Santa Fe with spare time! You are looking to spend 2-3 hours so dress well for the weather as you’ll be out doors!

This is a great museum slash events venue slash place to relax just outside town. We thoroughly enjoyed the guided docent tour, the historically preserved structures, and the nature paths around the ranch. Entrance is free for New Mexico residents. The shop is fun. The bathrooms are clean. The water stations around the property are great appreciated.

We looooooved it!!!! My mom is a member apparently you can get an annual membership and go whenever you want. We went for the Santa Fe Harvest Festival. The kids got to get a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, go on a hay ride, stomp grapes from the vineyard, make pictures in the old school house. So much to do. We are going back in November to take family pictures because it’s a perfect place for Fall Pics.

Best museum in New Mexico. Staff here go above and beyond and it shows in your experience. If you are in the area, you should check it out. If you want a tour of any kind, I recommend buying tickets in advance. However, we had the option to join a tour just walking in with our group of 9 people. They have tour guides to show you around or you can do your own. We chose to do our own with the self tour guide book they gave us. We got a map with all buildings numbered that match with numbers on the buildings. In the self guide book, there was information you could read at every number that matched up with buildings. It was very educational. Depending on the day, there is staff at every building or most buildings. We went on a week day so less staff as there were less visitors. But the most buildings did have staff and they were so friendly and answered all questions. One staff member at two of the buildings specifically spent 20 min with our group showing us multiple buildings and giving us thorough historical information that was not in the book. There is a good bit of walking so I recommend wearing good shoes and taking water. There is refillable water stations throughout. It is not paved but it smooth enough to get strollers/wagons/scooters through. There may be issues after strong rains. The front door offer a very cute gift shop and cafe. I recommend the ice cream sandwiches. They are made of two homemade cookies with ice scream and sprinkles in between that were delicious.

Canyon Road in Santa Fe is a picturesque street lined with over 100 art galleries, studios, and restaurants housed in traditional adobe buildings. It's a favorite activity for visitors to stroll along this legendary road, as well as around the downtown Plaza and the up-and-coming Railyard District. The area is known for its vibrant arts community and offers the opportunity to meet artists during Friday evening gallery openings.
If you love and appreciate art, I highly recommend visiting Canyon Road in Santa Fe. The pleasure of looking at galleries, each with their own unique character and color, makes you lose track of time. The friendly and open manners of each gallery you visit will make you realize why this place is a mecca for art.

A mile long one way street that filled with 80+ galleries of all kinds, a few eateries, the Ahmyo Wine Garden, and shops that sell cloth and jewelry. It begins at the junction with Paseo De Peralta, and pretty much ends at Santa Fe Teahouse & Bistro (821 Canyon Rd) and Art Box (901 Canyon Rd) on either side of E Palace Ave. Paseo De Peralta (means Peralta’s Promenade or Peralta’s Walk) is a major street in Santa Fe, named after Don Pedro de Peralta (1584?-1666), the Spanish colonial governor of New Mexico who established Santa Fe as the capital in 1610. The customers are mostly tourists.

With its beautiful architecture and convenient location, the Inn & Spa at Loretto is a must-stay for anyone visiting Santa Fe.
I've been here all of 6 hours so far on a Thursday. Very pleasantly surprised I was able to check in very early. Had a excellent cocktail, booked a very short notice massage, and spent time at the beautiful pool. Nick at the spa was incredible. Absolutely recommend him! Planning on more time at the pool and hot tub after dinner. Loving my stay so far. Excellent staff.

The Inn is located in an incredible location within walking distance of almost anything you would like to do in historic Santa Fe. Parking is convenient and efficient with valet parking included in the amenity fee. The interior of the hotel is clean but a tad dated. While not luxurious, its a beautiful hotel and will please most travelers. The rooms are also clean and comfortable with a cute, plush teddy bear awaiting your arrival. The coffee bar, Crafted, in the hotel is a major plus serving flavorful coffees and tasty pastries. Furthermore, although we didn't visit it during our stay, the "Living Room" in the hotel is a hub of activity serving drinks, lite bites and even has live music. All in all, a pleasant stay in this historic hotel.

As owner of an independent 5-star resort in Asia (Plantation Bay, “a Real Resort with a Real Spa”), I have a lot of sympathy for independent hotels, but felt that I was not correctly treated here. First, the location is very very good, right in the center of Old Santa Fe and surrounded by restaurants and art galleries, some churches. I chose a Vista King, which for about $535 (including a $35 resort fee when there’s no resort to speak of) I assumed would deliver value for money at least in room fittings and view. It turned out that my patio area had no privacy and overlooked a parking lot. So much for Vista. The room itself was very tired-looking, not like the booking.com photo at all, and so was the hotel, with a generally depressing interior appearance, though the outside looks great. Again speaking as a professional hotelier, I would venture the entire hotel hasn’t been remodeled in at least 40 years. The bathroom layout is poor and the fixtures were several plumbing generations old. The bed was comfortable but too high off the floor. Many elements were not consistent with a 4-star description, such as a fireplace with just a candle in it, plain painted-plywood doors and panels, lamps with Daylight bulbs, just one electrical outlet for the credenza holding the refrigerator, the coffee-maker, and a lamp (so to run the coffee-maker I had to unplug the lamp). The staff are pleasant and efficient, which made up a bit, but I felt I was overcharged. If my room was not typical of the hotel, then the front desk staff gave me a “last-to-sell” room on the assumption that as an Asian I wouldn’t know any better. I do know better. I’m going to keep calling out every hotel that gives me an inferior room for the price, and/or an inferior room because of my race.

We stayed here a couple of nights on a business trip so the room was paid for but it was indeed a small room for several family members. The balcony was nice and the view was phenomenal. It's charming but there are a few bugs to work out in the service department. Overall, okay and it is a historic place. Next door has the miraculous staircase that we went to go see. It's walking distance to the beautiful plaza.

The king room was very spacious. We had a corner balcony that looked out over the pool and had a great view of the mountains. Many amenities at this hotel. We used the spa and had fabulous massages and facials. We ate some light bites and had a drink at The Living Room. Staff is friendly and helpful, valet is great and rooms are clean. The location is everything. You are central to all the shops and churches if you stay here. Would book again!

Loretto has been lovingly restored, upgraded, and maintained. It truly is a beautiful Santa Fe style place. The beds were super-comfy with top-quality linens, the bar is delightful with lots of comfy couches and a big, warm fireplace. The pool & hot spa area is modern and offers private spaces. Topping it all off is a truly grand coffee shop, helpful and friendly staff throughout the without hovering or obsequiousness. The restaurant is good for a quick bite, and you're steps away from great dining options. This is now my new 'home' when I come to Santa Fe.
Margaret L — Google review
The only positive thing I have to say is there’s free coffee. Otherwise, this was a really strange lodging experience. For how expensive it is, you would expect just a minuscule of luxury. It is listed as “high-end,” but that was absent here. The stay in this hotel was only comparable to living in some sort of cave or hut. The staff was kind, though the tall male host was very odd. The valet also was never at their post and made getting the car a long and unpleasant process. The place doesn’t smell very pleasant, just kind of musty. The lack of any mirror in the room was inconvenient. The IRON had black gunk on it that absolutely RUINED a perfect pair of white pants meant to wear to a wedding… And lastly, they put this cute little stuffed bear on the bed in your room, and don’t tell you that if you take it home, they charge you $35! I slept with that bear for the entirety of my stay just to find out it’s not included, and that they’re going to put it back in the room if I don’t want to be charged. I wonder how many drooled on it before I did. 2/10. Save your money.

The Inn was absolutely wonderful to stay in, and the staff was the best. Hunter helped us upon check in with places to go, and Nikki was great to provide places to have breakfast and Ben served us the most delicious meal I have had in a long time. Even the General Manager stopped what he was doing to help when we accidentally locked the key in our room. It was expensive but the quality was worth it and more. These three, Hunter, Nikki and Ben went above and beyond with their helpfulness and service. if you want the perfect place to stay in Santa Fe, this is the place to be.

Nestled at the end of East San Francisco Street, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a stunning architectural gem that dates back to the late 19th century. Commissioned by Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, this grand cathedral took 15 years to complete and reflects his vision to elevate Santa Fe's religious landscape beyond its traditional adobe roots.
The cathedral is a prominent landmark near Santa Fe’s historic plaza, and the docents are friendly and eager to share details regarding the restoration process, including the extensive painting and window preparations. Choir concerts seem to occur frequently, and the grounds are tree-lined and peaceful.

This is a beautiful architectural and artistic place to visit. Though I am not Catholic, the basilica is a place of beauty and peace to worship Jesus. Everywhere you look there is a memorial to Christ sacrifice. Which is essential to redemption. As a Protestant, I would have loved to see a memorial to His resurrection. This is victory over death and proof that God has accepted this sacrifice and promises to fulfill all that was given to Jesus, we have our assurance that our salvation is secure.

The cathedral is beautiful inside, radiating a deep sense of community. There’s a prayer book where visitors can write down the names of loved ones they want prayers for. A heart-shaped wooden stand holds rosaries in different colors - I picked a pink one. The crucifix glows in a glorious shade of orange, surrounded by images of saints, while the stained-glass windows fill the place with vibrant light. There is also a lovely store inside that adds to the charm of the place.

During our family holiday in Santa Fe to visit relatives, we took the opportunity to explore the downtown area and were drawn to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The Romanesque architecture is stunning, and the interior offers a serene atmosphere that invites reflection. The stained glass windows and religious artwork are truly inspiring. Santa Fe Plaza is a historic city center that reflects traditional Spanish Colonial cities. Resembling destinations in Mexico and Central America, it features ornate historic buildings surrounding a large plaza where people relax and soak in the special atmosphere. Since its establishment in 1610, the plaza has been central to daily life, hosting centuries of festivities, events, and fairs. The New Mexico History Museum serves as an educational resource and local landmark, offering insights into the diverse experiences of New Mexico's people.
The Santa Fe Plaza, located right in the heart of downtown, was one of the highlights of our recent trip to New Mexico. We loved exploring its historic charm, including beautiful old churches and the Palace of the Governors. The area is filled with great spots that make the visit worthwhile, for instance, restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, bookstores, museums, and more. We had a fantastic day soaking in the culture and atmosphere.

Absolutely stunning place. This place has the vibes, the feel of the celebrations. Vibrant, colorful and playful - that’s the feel that you get while at the Santa Fe plaza. Multiple gift shops, art galleries, churches & cathedrals, shopping places and exceptional eateries. The plaza cafe being the best example. There is always a mood of celebration in the air. We loved the vibrance of the place. La Fonda being the central point of attraction for a great downtown.

The Santa Fe plaza, with its quaint little stores, colorful artwork, and sun-warmed adobe pillars, makes for a charming stroll that can fill a day beautifully. The atmosphere is lively, and we came across a market where artisans were selling jewelry. The walkability of the plaza makes it easy to pop into art galleries, and catch a glimpse of historic landmarks. The place could be even more lively with pop-up sports, or dance battles.

A National Historic landmark in downtown Santa Fe district and a must see for first time visit to the area. A small lovely green space to sit and relax. Today the central Soldier’s Monument remains damaged after protestors toppled down the obelisk and defaced the base in October 2020 during an Indigenous People’s day event. The monument was controversial due to a plaque referring to "savage Indians," and the protesters used ropes and chains to pull down its tiers. The Palace of the Governors sits across the plaza while the plaque marking end of the Santa Fe Trail on the other end. Free to visit. No parking.

No visit to Santa Fe would be complete without starting here. Plus you’ll overhear the “local” tour guides (easy to spot as they’re all wearing Steve Erwin adjacent outfits) talking to large groups and decide you’re much better off navigating the city solo. Also plenty of dubious Chinese souvenirs masquerading as local turquoise etc in the colonnades. Still, it is beautiful. And very central 🤣🤦‍♀️

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico is a tribute to the iconic artist known as the 'Mother of American Modernism.' The museum showcases rotating exhibits featuring O'Keeffe's paintings, sculptures, and sketches. Visitors can explore her innovative perspective on landscapes through pieces like From the Plains and Jimson Weed.
Highly recommended! It’s so worth the trip! It was really nice to get to see other styles of her work aside from the famous flowers. The museum also did a great job painting her as a person who really lived a full life. You should buy a ticket in advance as the place is quite small and cannot accommodate too many people at a time. We went there early in the morning and it was better since it was not too crowded yet.

Will return. What a treat: we enjoyed two hours private tour at the museum of Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986). She's my top three artist. I even bought a matching flowery dress when I went to see one of her exhibits in New York a few years ago. This museum was opened in 1997. It's small (Santa Fe is a small town!) and the paintings they've, are rather small too. I think the museums in New York and DC have far more magnificent 气势磅礴 works of hers. "Mother of American modernism", was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Virginia and the Teachers College, Columbia University. Her eventual husband Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was a photographer and modern art promoter, who held an exhibit in New York for her in 1917. He would divorce his fellow photographer/artist Emmeline Obermayer in 1924 and married O'Keeffe the same year. The frames: they look thin. The docent said they were designed by the artist herself. Reportedly can prevent bugs as well as wine (they do rent out the museum space). O'Keeffe was often the harshest judge of her own work, and even went so far as to destroy paintings that did not meet her standards. In some cases this was because a work had been damaged-including damage that she considered to have been done by careless conservators. She had been visiting New Mexico (Santa Fe, Taos, etc.) during her marriage. After his death in 1946, she soon moved to New Mexico for the rest of her life; spending the last few years in Santa Fe and passed away there. Among list of artists who enjoyed success and recognition during their own lifetime, she was the only female artist among the 10 men: Pablo Picasso Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo Claude Monet Pierre-Auguste Renoir Rembrandt Salvador Dalí Andy Warhol Georgia O'Keeffe Henri Matisse Paul Cézanne Till 1986, her works fetched the highest amount at the auctions, among female artists. Now her works only trail behind Yayoi Kusama (1929-) and Joan Mitchell (1925-92), one is still alive and one dead six years after her. She enjoyed cooking, perhaps was also the farm to table pioneer. The exhibits of her kitchen wears, pots, pans and notebooks are hers but her Leica camera on display wasn't, the museum explained that she used the same model. Love the honesty. One thing I thought she was above the rest was she didn't sign her works, because she believed her distinctive and unique style would be easily recognized. Which is so true. The female docent said, "she said, 'you don't sign your face, do you?'" A little (or a lot) like Marguerite Duras (1914-96), or any elderly person who relies on a much younger companion. O'Keeffe hired an assistant Juan Hamilton (John Bruce; 1946-) in 1973, after suffering vision lose. He was 27, a divorced potter at the time. She left her estate to him, but to avoid lengthy litigation, he gave up much of that estate (houses and paintings ...) because "if he were to fight that fight, he would spend 10 to 15 years, which would be an entire career, and neither Miss O’Keeffe (how he loved to call her) nor he would ever want that." O'Keeffe was captivated by the view of Cerro Pedernal (Flint Mountain), which has been a sacred and significant site to many Indigenous and Hispano communities for thousands of years. O'Keeffe's own immense love and respect for this mountain is exhibited in her numerous depictions of the view from her front yard. According to the docent, her ashes are spread here.

My visit to this museum left me pensive, caught in the quiet gravity of O’Keeffe’s vision - a vision that clings to reality while daring to transcend it. One piece stopped me in my tracks: a gray crucifix pierced by a dark red heart. I stood before it, transfixed. Its stark lines seemed to pulse with unspoken stories-sorrow, sacrifice, perhaps love’s quiet endurance. The painting’s neat composition belied its emotional weight. The museum weaves O’Keeffe’s life into a vivid tapestry. Her robes, and her art supplies are displayed with care. Then there are the bones. Her collection of bones struck me as primal, and profound. The Georgia O’ Keeffe museum isn’t just a collection of art; it’s an invitation to pause, to feel, to question.

I learned so much about Georgia. I loved seeing different stages of her art work. I also loved how many people were there sharing our common love of her art. I liked the way. It was laid out and you could enter different rooms to view different stages. Seeing her art up close, seeing her belongings and her supplies. I just loved this experience. I would highly recommend this museum and BEFORE the house tour. That is how we did it. A lot of the art we saw at the museum played into the tour of her house. The staff were friendly and informative. You like art, then head here.

I did the free audio tour. A lot of information is packed into the audio descriptions, and you actually want to walk faster than the audio tour allows. I encourage you to take a seat on a bench and look at the work while the audio is going. They even have classical music as part of the tour, naming classical music and artists she and Arthur Steiglitz had in their home and listened to while she painted. Every piece is magical, simple or classic, or preeminent Georgia O'Keefe. They have a movie bio of her life playing, and they also have a movie about the Téwa, renamed Pueblo by Spanish colonizers, artists who made various art pieces and wrote letters, between 2023 and 2025, as an answer to Georgia O'Keeffe's cultural appropriation and disrespect of Indigenous traditions while living in New Mexico. It was eye opening and a massive display of basic, approachable , and repairative reparations. And the best part of the exhibit was the Téwa art intermingled with the Georgia O'Keefe pieces that they challenged.

Small, but engaging museum in downtown Santa Fe. The day we visited, a weekday, tickets were available at the door, but best to reserve online, since they can sell out. A 10-minute video upon entry is a really great introduction to the artists life and her 98-year journey to eventually call New Mexico home. The museum foundation is planning to build a larger museum about a block away. All the artwork comes with useful backgrounds on the art and artist, which make the exhibits accessible to all ages. I spent about an hour in the museum and small gift shop, but an ethisiast could draw it iut to 2 hours.

A visit to Santa Fe is not complete without spending time at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Born in Wisconsin, influenced her paintings her entire life. She combines Wisconsin with Santa Fe to paint with a unique blend and style. Making her a true feminist and role model to young women throughout the world.

This museum is beautiful and informative. I was pleasantly surprised at the museum's acknowledgement of the Tewa people and their culture. There were some beautiful pieces by Tewa artists on display also. The staff were all very nice and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

Mentioned on
2 lists
Monument
Nature & Parks
Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a vast geological park with cone-shaped tent rock formations and hiking trails that offer an opportunity to observe wildlife. The slot canyons within the monument are a sight to behold, with uniquely shaped rock formations that will leave visitors in awe. Nearby attractions include Cochiti Lake and Bandelier National Monument, which features ancient cliff dwellings and hiking trails.
Great place “must visit” if you come to NM. The hike is short probably like 3.5 miles, but is steep with gravel and few rocky paths. It’s not ADA accesible. To go to the top, you need to be able to climb for a couple step ups; it’s beautiful if you choose not to go to the top and avoid those step ups. My sedan car did ok in the parking lot and road, so it should not be a problem. You need to reserve your visit ahead of time (2-3 weeks ahead) and pay your Pueblo fee, so two tickets. Price is reasonable and very doable-definitely worth it.
Viridiana M — Google review
These formations are pretty amazing. The "Cave loop" trail isn't difficult but isn't wheelchair friendly at all. We didn't have time for the "Slot Canyon" trail, but other visitors said it was difficult at times. The Veteran's Overlook is pretty good, though it is a dirt road for a few miles. You need both a Recreation.gov reservation and a Pueblo pass per person to gain entrance, making this a pricey proposition for groups and families. The Pueblo Visitor center where everyone has to check in has a few snacks and souvenirs as well as clean rest rooms. There is no National Park service Visitor Center, and the only literature you get going in is a single page map without any information about what you're looking at. Bottom line is we're glad we went but would not likely return.
D B — Google review
What a special place! I feel blessed I got to visit! We got super lucky and scored a last minute spot since you have to make reservations at recreation.gov. And also need a purple pass to enter the Pueblo reservation. Start at the Cochiti Visitor center where you check in with both passes, then follow a pilot car to the site where you check in again. The hike to the top and through the slot canyon was amazing, like movie like. Go all the way to the end for a great view of the rocks. Don’t sleep on this place! Get the reservations! Support our local tribes!
Lindsey P — Google review
This place was the highlight of our trip. Yes, you need reservations at recreation.gov and Purple Pass, but easy to obtain and well worth it. Slot Canyon is a must - signs are a little intimidating, but it wasn't that bad. Cave Loop trail is relatively easy. The Veterans Loop road was closed due to previous monsoon washout. Utterly fantastic place!
Jennifer W — Google review
Amazing geology that I have never seen before. Challenging hike through the slot canyon and to the top of the overlook peak but well worth it! You must get tickets in advance as the Pueblo only allows 150 people into the park each day.
Bob H — Google review
A beautiful national monument. The trails are scenic and their variety takes one through a diversity of habitats that accentuate the natural processes that shaped this landscape. Well worth the experience. Plan ahead, since advanced reservations with BLM and the Kasha-Katuwe tribal authority are required. I’d also recommend doing the veteran’s memorial trail first which provides an overview of the monument area and leaves the most time to spend hiking the other trails which highlight canyons and hoodoos.
Bryan A — Google review
Incredible hiking area with beautiful hoodoos and canyons! Especially appreciated the low crowds which allowed for quiet moments throughout the trails.
Gitty R — Google review
One of a kind National Monument. Must see if you are in Santa Fe or Albuquerque NM. Just make sure you buy tickets in advance and then get the pueblo pass the visitor center.

Sights & Landmarks
Bandelier National Monument is a fascinating site with human settlements dating back to around 11,000 years ago. The 1.2-mile Main Loop Trail provides an excellent introduction to the park's main ruins and history, passing by structures such as Big Kiva and the Tyuonyi ruins. Visitors can climb ladders to explore caves carved into the soft volcanic rock and access old structures.
Very well kept and easy hike. You can do the loop in one hour, but I‘d plan in some more time to properly check out the site and maybe have a picnic. There’s a lot of shade after the caves. Half of the loop is concrete and doable with a wheelchair I suppose. Come early and bring a sweater. It’s chill, but great! No one was there at 8 am on a Wednesday.
Peter S — Google review
They are mostly closed for the gov shutdown, but one campground was open still. There was access to one hiking trail from the campground, Tyuonyi Overlook was accessible. Pueblo Trail is closed. Visitors center is closed. The overlook is incredibly scenic. Just do not expect to see the cave homes right now.
Iva K — Google review
Super fascinating national monument showcasing the natural landscape of the area and the Pueblo culture/dwellings. Nice gift shop and visitor center too. Unfortunately the Alcove House was closed for repairs this summer when I visited, but I did the Pueblo Loop trail and definitely recommend as it goes by the majority of the cliff dwellings, some of which you can even climb up into via ladders.
Tony I — Google review
🤩 what an underrated gem!! Beautiful and easy hikes to see the ruins. Climbing the ladders to the Alcove house was the highlight. Parking lot was full by noon. But there’s so longer, harder back packing trails. Don’t let this one slip by!!
Lindsey P — Google review
It was such a privilege to visit this site in 2023. There was a visitor center with a small but great museum- including a gift shop. The grounds are open to guided tours and individual exploration. You can also get up close to the wall dwellings via some ladders which was super cool! 20/10, an important cultural site that has a lot to interact with.
Robin H — Google review
I visited Bandelier National Monument and was honestly amazed by the beauty and history of the place. The cliff dwellings and trails were incredible to explore, and the scenery felt peaceful and untouched. The only downside was the limited parking and the shuttle schedule, which made getting there a bit tricky. Still, it was totally worth it for the views and experience.
Brandon C — Google review
I really enjoyed this park, it could easily be argued to be included as a national park the historical aspect and Native American dwellings in this area, makes it unique, especially the cliff dwellings. Unfortunately the Alcove House Trail was closed when I was there so I missed out on one of the main sites to see.
Clayton W — Google review
A relaxing environment with lots of hiking trails, camping, small restaurant and gift shop. A great park for families to spend the day exploring the ancient Pueblo homes and enjoying the Frijoles Canyon. Your park entry also includes entry to the nearby Valles Caldera

Sights & Landmarks
El Santuario de Chimayo is a historic adobe church located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Chimayo, New Mexico. Dating back to 1813, it has been a revered site for Catholic pilgrims seeking healing and offering prayers of petition and thanksgiving. This colonial-style shrine is renowned for its 'healing dirt' and holds a significant place in American Catholic pilgrimage centers.
A beautiful and tranquil place for all people. I visit a couple times a year and participate in the Pilgrimage on Good Friday. The event is amazing and life changing for so many, including me. I have witnessed a few miracles and love seeing members of the community making time to care for those making the journey. The church is very beautiful and serene, regardless of your denomination. There are also gift shops and food vendors so staying for a few hours can be comfortable and pleasant.

I have never been to a place similar to this Holy Place of Pilgrimage. Many come here for miracle. A lot of healing happening in this place. I find this place so unique. It is believed that a type of soil gives physical healing. Unfortunately, pictures are not allowed inside the church where you can get the "blessed" soil that believed to give healing. We attended a Sunday mass at 12PM in English. 10:30AM is in Spanish. Plenty of parking too.

This is a functional church and chapel imbued with incredible history and lore. The woodwork and art will make you feel like you’re in the middle of 16th or 17th century. The grounds are also beautiful, and the site is shouldered by several shops and coffee houses, where you can get a cup of piñon coffee and a fresh bag of chili. Really worth a visit!

Very beautiful place to visit. Nice gift shops, nice staff, and overall a wonderful place. The architecture was amazing and it was very interesting to see the history of the place! History museum
The Bradbury Science Museum is an educational destination featuring 35 interactive exhibits that cover a wide range of topics, from natural defense to the development of nuclear bombs. The museum's origins date back to researcher Robert Krohn, who began creating exhibits based on classified experiments conducted in Los Alamos during nuclear tests. Initially housed in a disused ice house for protection, the museum is now named after Norris Bradbury, the lab's director who approved its establishment.
I recently visited the Bradbury Science Museum, and it was a very informative experience. The museum offers a detailed look into the science and history of the projects related to nuclear explosions. One of the highlights was a 15-minute informative video shown in their theater, which provided a great overview of the projects and their significance. The exhibits were well-organized, and the information was thorough, giving visitors a deep understanding of the work done at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in science and history.

I loved my visit to the Bradbury Science Museum — it's a fascinating place filled with unique artifacts and compelling stories that bring history and science to life. The exhibits about the Manhattan Project and the science behind it are incredibly well-done and informative. I especially appreciated how interactive and thoughtfully curated everything was. It is also free! The staff were also amazing — super friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about the museum and its mission. Whether you're into history, science, or just looking for something unique and engaging to explore, this place is a must-visit in Los Alamos. Highly recommend!

This is the place to visit in addition to the National Museum of Nuclear Science to learn about Nuclear science, what made the U.S. starting to develop those weapons during WW2 and how the science still used for energy development on top of other research been created at the National Laboratory up the road. The National Laboratory was an integral part for the development of Nuclear energy and applications today still a research facility for the development of other products and research. The Bradbury Science museum is phenomenal and free to visit. Highly interactive with plenty to learn and explore while there. We spend a few hours and had a great time. You also learn about the atomic bomb and the scientists behind it like Robert Oppenheimer and the National Laboratory. While in the area check out some of the locations from the movie Oppenheimer including the house where he lived, locations around the town and other areas around New Mexico where the movie was filmed. Overall a great experience and highly recommend it for the whole family.

Bradbury Science Museum is an excellent resource for learning about the scientific method. The hands-on exhibits are informative for all ages. Watch the 15 minute film to have a good overview of the work at Los Alamos. Be sure to visit the gift shop for interesting science oriented products.

This great museum is FREE!! From the outside, this museum looks small, but it is packed with fascinating displays. You could easily spend an entire day and not go through everything. It is arranged well, so you can focus on your areas of interest, and skim over the others. Two great videos, one of the history and another of the future. It is exciting to see what is happening at Los Alamos today!
L T — Google review
Because I did the Los Alamos history museum tour, I didn't get breakfast. And I was starving when I got to the Bradbury museum so I didn't stay as long as I meant to. However, I still managed to catch both 15 min movies that were featured in their respective auditoriums. It's an incredibly informative museum that is well maintained, with loads of interactive exhibits that really draw a visitor in, regardless of age or attention span. I'm looking forward to visiting again with my whole family! Also, entry is FREE.
Beverly G — Google review
The Bradbury Science Museum is a great educational experience. This museum is dedicated to everything regarding nuclear weapons. They gave plenty information about the history of the Manhattan project, nuclear weapons design, peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and current safeguards in place. There were two full size models of the “little boy” and “fat man” bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There were also plenty of interactive simulations. Everything at the museum was free of charge. There is so much to learn and experience at the Bradbury Science Museum for people of all ages.
Frenite — Google review
If you are in Los Alamos for a tour of the Manhattan Project, you definitely need to drop by the Bradbury Science Museum. If nothing else, I found the timeline composition to be a good backstory, add to that the analytical run-down of the different sites (buildings) which you cannot access on the lab grounds, and the full-size mock-ups of "Fat Man" and "Little Boy" the museum highlights filled-in my need for the 'science' side of the story that you will not get from the walking tour. Don't get me wrong, the history of the town is great and looking at old buildings from the '40s that were not snatched up by the park service until very recently, is kind of fun. However, seeing the wiring of the detonation mechanism for Fat Man was really cool and unexpected.

Wonderful experience! We did the adventure tour which included both the cliff dwellings and the mountain top village tour. We were guided through by a native Indian guide giving us a great feel for the how the tribe lived. Our guide Ernest was outstanding! This was the best experience ever.

Such an awesome place to visit, a historically significant site. The cliff dwellings are awesome, rich with history, and scattered with pottery shards. We took a self-guided tour for 10 bucks a person, which was great. You may also opt for a guided tour for more money. The visitor center has a bit of information and a short video.

1 adult and 3 kids (one was 5, one was 3) - $77 dollars later and my little kids still don't know what a cliff dwellling is like. And won't for a while because we don't have time to drive somewhere else. They don't let you in to see the cliff dwellling without purchasing an expensive tour and said that the part that the kids could go on would include a village with a bunch of structures and it really doesn't. Almost complete waste of our time and money :(

Friendly people, great food served in grill with breakfast burritos premade some days for those in a hurry. Excellent quality coffee (Guatemalan Roast) and selection of items. Standard gas station fare, but the smiling faces make it worth returning to.

It gets extremely crowded and some of the people with us were rude and kept getting in our way when we were trying to take pictures or look around. That of course isn't the locations fault but maybe a better system for tours during busy seasons. But the history and scenery is amazing!

I enjoyed my visit here. It is run by the Tewa of Santa Clara and they are ernest in describing their peoples past. Be sure you have plenty of fluids before you go and take water on the tour. The mesa top tour is the most interesting and you can take the ladders back down to the visitor center. A lot of fun.

Wonderful friendly service and the restrooms are always clean. Great gas prices never had problems with their fuel. Love the small restaurant inside when it's open.

The Puye Cliff tour was very interesting; however, we went on a week day and out of season (in May) so they only did a tour of the Mesa Top. We weren't allowed to explore the cliffs on our own ( we assume for safety reasons. Not to mention, judging by all of the disrespectful defacing of the cliffs, they probably don't trust people out there on their own anymore) so we only saw the Mesa Top while there, unfortunately. Luke was our tour guide and he was very informative and friendly. Hopefully next time we can get a tour of the cliffs as well!

Valles Caldera National Preserve is a stunning destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The preserve boasts a 13-mile wide meadow teeming with diverse wildlife and offers opportunities for fly fishing in its streams. Access to the preserve is limited, with only 58 car passes available per day, so it's essential to sign up early.
This is a beautiful place, it is viewable by pull offs on the side of the road. Luckily, fees were being waived the day that we visited. There is a gift shop and we picked up some cool magnets and a t-shirt, but the back country access must be scheduled through recreation.gov we had coordinated the back country pass in advance and did visit the back country and found the roads to be fairly rough , all gravel and not much to see that couldn’t be seen from the road. I left wishing I’d planned my visit for dawn or dusk so that I could have watched for elk coming out to graze in the valley.

A beautiful volcanic landscape perched atop the mountains. We visited briefly in mid July, it was not too hot given the high altitude, and the early afternoon storms offer relief. I can recommend the hidden valley trail, the turn off for which is on the gravel road before the visitor's center. We saw prairie dogs, coyotes, and many lovely wildflowers.

Wow! Wow! Wow! During our annual visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico, we had no idea our adventure would take such an unexpected and beautiful turn. We had planned to visit Bandelier National Monument, but due to a government shutdown, it was closed. Thankfully, a kind park ranger suggested we head to Valles Caldera National Preserve instead — and we are so glad we took that advice! The preserve was absolutely stunning. It was an overcast and cool October day, which only made the landscape more dramatic. The colors were vibrant, the views were breathtaking, and to top it all off, we even spotted a coyote in the distance. What an unforgettable place. I already can’t wait to go back!

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is managed for us by the National Park Service who allow driving into the back reaches of the Preserve and they allow bicycle riding, horseback travel, hiking, cross country skiing and other non motorized access. For handicapped people, access by autos is allowed to see much of the Preserve. I thank the NPS for their good work at the VCNP.

New Mexico River Adventures offers all-inclusive trips that take care of everything from pick-up to drop-off, including rafting and photos, tasting fees, and lunch. The full-day trip in early April provided perfect weather for a mild class 2 & 3 experience with wet suits and splash jackets provided. Guests recommend purchasing NRS Wet Shoes for added comfort.
Emma was our guide. She was great and gave us clear instructions to be safe and have fun. We had our 5yr old with us and she made sure he was safe and had the best time. The water level was around medium so it wasn’t as rough as I’d expected. The crew is very fun and nice and the lunch they served on the full day was delicious. They had options for all ages including tacos, chips and pb and j sandwiches. I was thankful that they also had a cooler of water. They provide helmets and life jackets. Bring your water bottle and sunscreen and they can stow it on the raft. If you bring your cellphone make sure it’s water proof. I would recommend using them again. Thanks for a fun day Emma! Cheers!

Me, my dad, and uncle went on the two night trip on the Chama with Liv and her dynamite team. We had the best time ever. The scenery and river was beautiful but the best part were the people that went. I was so impressed with their professionalism and love that the NM River Adventure guides showed me and all of us. We bonded with the other twelve guests as well and are sharing pictures as I write this review. I also have to mention the food. It was outstanding. It was amazing to see what meals they would put together for us. I can’t wait to bring my family next year to do this same trip. Thank you so much NM River Adventures! We’ll never forget this trip.

This was my very first white-water rafting adventure and wow, was I in for it! A huge shoutout to Dan, our guide, for being absolutely amazing. He navigated us through some tough rocky spots where we got stuck, and he kept us moving (and laughing) the whole way. I am sore from head to toe because Dan definitely made me put in the work – “Forward two, back three, you’re not in sync!” 😂😂 But I wouldn’t have had it any other way. He kept us safe, motivated, and made the trip so much fun. Thank you, Dan, and thank you New Mexico River Adventures for such an unforgettable experience. We will definitely be back!

15/10! Exceeded every expectation. I am not a camper or an outdoorsy person, and I really enjoyed our 3-day/2-night rafting trip on the Rio Chama. NMRA provided all the necessary gear (tent, sleeping pad & bag, cooking gear, shade/rain coverage, chairs, waste solutions, life vests, rafts, paddles, you name it). All for what I feel like is a reasonable price, especially considering they provide all the food. They send you a packing list with suggested clothing and personal items. They also called to answer some questions I had beforehand. The guides made the trip. We had Liv, Owen, Sophie, Maddie, and Jake, and they were all lovely. Knowledgeable, kind, funny, and fun. They answered all of our questions, let the kids try rowing, played games, set up the kitchen, cooked and cleaned up delicious meals, explained things about the river and wildlife, took us on a hike to see dinosaur footprints, kept us safe and comfortable on the water and at camp, and many, many more things. Plus, they were all such genuinely nice people. The other people on our trip were also great. It was the perfect balance of socializing and personal time. Nobody had to interact much if you didn’t want to and there was plenty of space and privacy, but it was also really nice to hang out. I can’t imagine camping any other way. Would and likely will repeat!

We had a fantastic day floating with NMRA. We did the entry level 1/2 day option because we took our 4-year old on her first rafting trip. Even though water levels were slower due to being off season, we all had a great time looking for wildlife and learning about the history of the area from our awesome guide, Dan. Can’t wait to do it again, recommended!

San Francisco de Asís Catholic Mission Church, situated in Ranchos de Taos just south of Taos, is a remarkable example of Spanish Colonial architecture. Constructed in the late 18th century entirely from adobe, it features striking sculptural buttresses and two front-facing bell towers. The interplay of light and shadow on its dramatic shapes has made it a beloved subject for artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams.
Beautiful. Historic. There are a few restaurants and shops nearby if you go after 10am, so you can really take your time. The building is beautiful, but more historically remarkable. Keep in mind this still a practicing church. Be respectful.

Beautiful and peaceful Mission Church. Seeing/witnessing The Mystery Painting/Shadow of the Cross is just unexplainable. It truly is a mystery and I felt blessed sitting before it and just taking it all in.

This adobe mission church is one the most photographed in New Mexico. It’s open to tourists and also on the trolley stop, with a quick visit to enjoy the garden and interior.

We visited the grounds of San Francisco de Asís Mission Church in Taos. Even without going inside, the adobe architecture and historic setting were beautiful and worth the stop.

A visit to The San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico is awe inspiring! The church itself is a magnificent example of Spanish Colonial architecture. However, over and above this, a visit to the gift shop to gain access to experience the mysterious painting, “The Shadow of the Cross” is a must. The entire experience was remarkably and when the image of Jesus holding a cross that mysteriously appeared when the lights were closed left an indelible image of the mystery!! This is a beautiful cathedral that you should stop by if you have a chance within the city of Santa Fe.

The most photographed church for a reason. The building is a typical adobe structure but larger than most of the other adobe churches we have seen. Work to maintain the building was taking place when we visited. There are some galleries and shops on the plaza and also a couple of restaurants.

Beautiful, peaceful and ancient church. Do visit of you get a chance to admire the adobe style architecture, great sculptures and of course the sense of peace one might feel in places like this. The place will be crowded on Sundays and parking will be hard

Step back in time and explore the Martinez Hacienda, a museum housed in an 1804 hacienda-style home that offers a glimpse into the Spanish colonial era. This historic house was once the residence of Severino Matinez and his family, including Padre Antonio Martinez, an influential figure who advocated for Native education and resisted outside influences.
A fascinating glimpse into daily life at an early-19th century working hacienda. Historical information posted in each room works well for a self-guided tour. We visited on a weekday morning and nearly had the place to ourselves, although I imagine that other weekday visitors might encounter school groups.

Great. A terrifically restored hacienda that covers the rugged conditions of living on the southwestern frontier, as well as the convergence of Spanish, Indian and American experince

Really well presented, neat little museum about rural life in the early 1800s. Gives you a feel for how the family lived here. Some cool furniture and items of daily living to see.

A great place to see and learn about how they lived in the Taos area back in the early 1800s through the mid 1900s. Beautiful Adobe home with really interesting floors! We learned a lot about the Martinez family and how they survived back then. Fun and educational!

The Georgia O'Keeffe House Museum in Abiquiu offers a glimpse into the life of the renowned artist. O'Keeffe, known for her nature-inspired paintings, resided in this breathtaking summer house with over 10 acres of land. The well-preserved house and gardens reflect her artistic genius and provide insight into her soul.
Kind of a must visit when in Santa Fe. Amazing documentation of the life of a famously major American artist. O’Keefe was a skillful artist and with a uniquely uncommon personality and lifestyle. Her life story makes you wish you knew her. A visit to her house gets you very close to fulfill such wish.

The home museum is an important place to visit for anyone interested in understanding more about Georgia O’Keeffe. The tour moves briskly through her former home and studio. It’s interesting to see the environment Georgia lived in. The home is fragile and much care is shown to balance protecting it while offering access to visitors. Tickets are purchased in advance at the visitor center and online. Tickets sold out quickly.

This was one of the absolute best things we did in NM. The way this was kept just like how she left it. That was walking into a painting. Into time. It was beautiful and perfect. I felt like I was a privileged person to be able to walk in this space. To see what her eyes saw. To hear what she could hear and to feel what she felt. To see where she made, felt and loved her art. Where she shared space with friends, pets and herself. This was a moving place to be. The views, how could anyone be so lucky to be able to see this beautiful world through those windows. The sky, the earth, the colors. My goodness this is a patch of what heaven should look like. They have left her home the way she left it. That is so rare. Nothing has been staged here. This was her space 100%. I felt honored to be able to add my footsteps to it.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa is a historic retreat established in 1916, featuring outdoor pools, mud baths, dining options, and hiking trails. Visitors praise it as one of the best hot springs destinations in the United States. The resort offers various pools for relaxation, including steam and sauna rooms and a lukewarm pool. Additionally, there are well-maintained changing rooms with showers and amenities provided. Guests appreciate the beautiful property and its proximity to nature.
We had a wonderful girls getaway (4 nights) at Ojo Caliente. All five of us stayed on property and had a mixture of accommodations....all suits in varying sizes from the Plaza Suite up to the Posi Suite. We gathered in the evening at the Posi Suite as it's large enough to accommodate the entire group for drinks, casual dinner, and soaking in the hot tub on the private patio. Each of us was happy with our accommodations. I gave 4 stars on rooms because a couple of us had bathrooms that while fine could use some updating. We went to the spa twice while at Ojo and loved our services and the technicians. The star of the resort is the natural beauty all around and the amazing mineral pools. They offer a 9:00 am yoga class in the morning. Each instructor was knowledgable, welcoming and friendly and the class is free! Arrive 10 mins early as the class is limited to 15 and fills up. We all came away restored and refreshed. A BIG shout out to Danny who mans the gate house!!!! He is so friendly and jumped right in when we needed help taking a group photo in front of the beautiful Ojo sign. I am already planning my next trip back to Ojo!

Lovely location, wonderful mineral pools. We purchased a private soak and day pass for just under $200 for 2. Our booking experience with Michelle was informative and pleasant. When booked, I was told to arrive at least 30 mins prior to the private soak. Admittedly, we arrived closer to an hour before our reservation. Upon arrival, we were rudely greeted by Justine who, in no uncertain terms indicated it didn’t matter what we were told upon booking but would not be allowed to enter until 10 am, the time of our booking and when the pools were open to the public. Interesting, given I was also offered a private pool reservation times prior to 10 am. While her message may have been accurate, there certainly could have been more finesse in the delivery. Disappointing to later learn Justine was a manager, given her insufficient skills in basic customer service management. To pass time, we enjoyed walking around the gardens and gift shop until we were allowed to enter as day guests just prior to our private pool appointment time. Our private pool host, Zach, was fantastic and the rest of the staff was helpful and courteous. It was unfortunate our introduction to Ojo Caliente was so poor. If we return, it will most certainly be as return hotel guests to the Santa Fe location.

My wife and I just spent a night in the Cliffside Suites for our honeymoon. We had gotten engaged here 2 years prior and just needed to come back! The tranquility and peaceful quiet is unmatched. With the Cliffside Suites you get your own Kiva fireplace, large living space, kitchenette, and a private patio with your own private hotspring tub. As with most of Northern New Mexico, the still, clear night skies make for some of the best star viewing you can ask for. The private large soaking spring makes for less hassle and much more privacy makes for a perfect get away. We had a complimentary half bottle of sparkling wine for our honeymoon. The perfect romantic couples getaway with the best location Northern New Mexico has to offer. Restaurant is reasonably priced and the food is delicious!

My sister and I just returned from Ojo Caliente. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our time there. One thing we really appreciated was the tranquil tone that Ojo sets and maintains throughout their property. Our stay was perfect from the massages we received to each meal we ate. We stayed in the historic hotel. The beds were really comfortable and we enjoyed the experience of going to the women's locker room in the evening to shower. We are already planning our next trip back. Thank you Ojo!
Tina H — Google review
Visited Ojo Caliente for the day so can’t speak to the accommodations. The midweek day pass is $45 for unlimited soaking (from 10am to 10pm). Ojo is one of the oldest natural hot springs in the country, dating back to 1868, and the mineral mix really does make each pool feel different. You get a locker and a tiny towel (bring your own robe unless you enjoy paying extra to look like everyone else). I started with the Iron Pool, where the water bubbles up through a pebble floor and leaves a faint metallic scent, then floated in the quiet Soda Pool, enclosed and steamy enough to fog your thoughts into stillness. The Arsenic Pool was my favorite since its the hottest at 104°, supposedly good for skin and joint pain. But the Lithia Pool was also nice and warm .. and is meant to calm anxiety and lift your mood. The Mud Pool is exactly what it sounds like: slather with mud (kind of runny) then bake in the sun and eventually rinse off. It was surprisingly fun and oddly cleansing. But best of all was watching everyone get confused about how to do it and be too damn proud to read the sign or ask for help 🤣🤦‍♀️ During the day I grabbed a $19 (but decent) falafel wrap at the café on site, then hiked the Posi Ouinge trail behind the resort. It leads onto BLM land dotted with cholla cactus and pottery shards from ancient Pueblo sites … a quiet, humbling contrast to the luxury of the pools. The gift shop was also decent and not ridiculously overpriced.

This was my second visit and wow what an amazing experience. This is truly an oasis in the desert mountains! It is very fancy and resort like in a small town in the middle of nowhere. This resort has everything you could want in a hot springs spa experience. And the restaraunt and wine bar are fantastic as well. The restaraunt has unique farm to table southwestern inspired cuisine and has vegan, vegetarian and carnivore options. This is a destination every time im in this area!
Michael C — Google review
Beautiful location. The soaking pools are very relaxing. The soaking hours for overnight guests only are truly tranquil. However, once the day pass people arrive it becomes quite crowded. They need to limit the amount the amount of day passes provided. The historic hotel rooms are sparse but clean; definitely paying for the experience and not the room. I enjoyed sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch with a glass of wine at night.
Lindsay F — Google review
My partner and I went out there for the day and we got there around 11. The weather was ideal. There was a slight breeze. I think it was 65°. We finished our day having lunch at the restaurant. Everything was perfect! The entire experience was amazing. We are definitely coming back!

Plaza Blanca is a stunning natural wonder featuring magnificent white sandstone cliffs that offer awe-inspiring views of the Chama River valley. This picturesque landscape gained fame as the subject of Georgia O'Keeffe's renowned series of paintings, "The White Palace." Accessible by obtaining permission from the gracious landowners, visitors can enter through a gated entrance and are urged to respect their request not to share photos.
This was so beautiful! My sister said it was second to the Grand Canyon. There was a storm coming so we went out quickly and decided to wait in the truck until it passed to go back out. It was worth sitting in the truck for a second look. The owners of this land are gracious enough to let you cone see the beauty of this natural landscape. I emailed them and they replied very quickly on how to request the gate access PIN. I can't describe how beautiful this was. Pictures do not do it justice.
Luci H — Google review
Register online to get the gate code ahead of time. Easy drive to the parking area and fairly easy trail. It’s sandy but mostly flat and requires minimal scrambling on the rock. This area is beautiful! You can find trails on all trails but it’s fairly easy to follow the different path. We went to the left after coming down the hill and cut between the rock formations and then over the back side and back to the parking area making the trail a loop.
Caitlin R — Google review
Fabulous place, serene and otherworldly. It’s no wonder Georgia O’Keefe loved to paint in these areas of New Mexico. Make sure to register online to get the gate code before you visit, wear good screening clothing against the sun a d take lots of water.

What an absolute gem tucked back in the mountains. You have to register on the mosque website to get the gate code but it’s free and I so appreciate them keeping this space accessible to the public! We had an incredible time walking around amongst the rock formations, it’s an otherworldly experience. Highly recommend this hike!
Ben S — Google review
This is an eerie place. First off it's on private land of a far eastern temple so you need to request the gate code. Once on the property you park in a small area and then walk down to.... not really a square but *white*. There are a bunch of towering limestone cliffs, completely surreal. Keep walking and you eventually deadend at a wall that has been cut by water flows. Awe inspiring!
David T — Google review
This was off the beaten path, but definitely worth the extra few minutes to visit! We happened to stop at the Abiquiu Inn and asked about directions to Ghost Ranch, and they recommended that we also check out Plaza Blanca on our way. Important detail - they gave us a gate access code to enter the parking area. Amazing rock formations in the middle of what felt like nowhere. It’s definitely worth stopping and spending some time hiking around these formations. Thanks to the land owners for granting access!
Murray J — Google review
You need to register to be able to access the parking lot behind the gate. They have a QR code at the gate which gives you the gate code once you register - you do not need to pay but you need to fill out a liability release. Nice meandering trail through beautiful rock formations that you could make as long or as short of a walk as you wanted.
Rebecca H — Google review
What an incredible place! Well worth the trip. Registration is done online and is quite simple and free of charge. What a privilege it is to be able to access this special place! Visit with respect and tread lightly on the land as these formations are fragile.

Ghost Ranch, a retreat managed by the Presbyterian Church, offers visitors a chance to explore anthropology and paleontology museums along with three trails. The site also served as the inspiration for Georgia O'Keeffe's work and features her former home in Abiquiu. Families are drawn to Ghost Ranch for its diverse offerings, including hiking, horseback riding, art programs, and opportunities for relaxation away from modern distractions.
This is such a special place in the most beautiful landscape! My husband came for a work retreat and we brought our 3 and 7 year old. We enjoyed the camp style food and even managed to keep our picky 3 year old fed. The room was basic but comfortable for our 4 night stay. We weren't sure if it would have enough things for young kids to do, but it was great! We all enjoyed the little museums and the beautiful walking tracks, and the Family Center had more than enough entertainment for our kids. We're looking forward to returning in the future!

We went to Ghost Ranch purely for the purpose of hiking out to Chimney Rock. Having purchased our day use passes online we checked in at the welcome center and used the restroom before hiking. The hike gave fabulous views of the rock formations and area around the ranch. The trail was well marked but right at the end the path was less distinct. Definitely a place worth a visit as the drive out from Taos was lovely too!

Astonishingly beautiful surroundings. Excellent hiking trails. Very attentive and helpful staff. Recommend a day pass. Rooms are overpriced and not entirely clean. Food in dining room is OK (although their pastry chef/baker is wonderful.)

Ghost Ranch is truly an exceptional place, one of the most breathtaking spots in all of New Mexico. We took the Georgia O’Keeffe Trail on horseback, and it was an unforgettable experience. The guides were kind, knowledgeable, and made the ride both safe and inspiring, pointing out the very landscapes that inspired O’Keeffe’s paintings. The museum is small but beautifully curated, offering fascinating insight into the area’s rich history and O’Keeffe’s deep connection to it. The staff and the gift shop were equally wonderful, friendly, welcoming, and full of genuine warmth. And those views... absolutely astonishing in every direction, red cliffs, wide open skies, and colors that seem to shift with every passing minute. A visit to Ghost Ranch isn’t just sightseeing; it’s an experience that stays with you. Highly, highly recommend!

Sleeper of a place. Absolutely beautiful. Took the history your walk very well done. Did the On a Lark trail short walk in the middle of majestic scenery. Careful though some narrow trail sections . Hiking sticks would be nice.We didn't stay here .just a great day trip from Santa Fe.

The Ghost Ranch is beautiful and special. It’s a non profit and it’s absolutely worth visiting. Just be careful when booking your room. Ours was truly filthy as in looked like it hadn’t been mopped in many months after many stays. It was a bit of shock and we like rustic. This was just dirty. Peeked in the empty room next to us and it looked clean so maybe it’s hit or miss. Waited all evening for someone to come clean as promised and no one ever did. They did change out our room the next day but it put a huge damper on the first 24 hours with calling and walking to the office bunches of times all evening and morning trying to get help -instead of decompressing which was the whole point. The manager was eventually helpful but the front desk people we encountered were either too young and inexperienced to know what to do or couldn’t be bothered. One of them said that the room was only $100 as if that meant I shouldn’t be complaining. I was astounded honestly, and I had a receipt showing I paid over 190.00. It’s rural NM and probably hard to find enough staff, but people are coming a long way deserve at the very least a clean welcoming room. Side note on food: we actually liked the food well enough for what it is. Some meals better than others, but always a big fresh salad bar and roasted fresh vegetables with most meals.

A reach to heaven! The landscapes, the buttes and flats are nearly a painting! The hiking trail to Chimney Rock was in excellent condition. The quiet and abundance of nature inspired every step of the climb. The horse ride to O'Keeffe's ranch home was masterfully narrated by Maddie not to mention Roy, a dutiful steed, made the tour so relaxing. Can hardly wait to return and explore more!

Not sure if this place is still closed to the public. This was one of the few places that captured by eyes while doing a random road trip across New Mexico. I stopped by, paid the donation ($2.00 at the time), a sang into the Echo Amphitheater. Importantly, don't forget to observe the surrounding area of Abiquiu from the amphitheater's perspective. Very pretty.

Very incredible. Short walk leading up to the site. The echos are pretty surreal and there’s plenty of space for many folks to soak it up. $2 forest service fee. There are restrooms. This is a little secluded so ice is likely. Parking is easy. We went after visiting ghost ranch for a few hours.

Walk in is easy, nice concrete path the whole way, just until the end, then only about 15-25 steps to a platform. There is a bench and a few small shade trees when you get to the platform.

This is a beautiful place to stop if you're driving between Chama & Abiquin, NM. Clean toilets & picnic shelters are a bonus. But, it's the geologic feature that's the main attraction. The Amphitheater is beautiful & only a easy walk from the parking lot. Plus, there's a good view of the landscape that inspired Georgia O'Keefe below the wayside.
