Dropped by here in the late afternoon. Not sure whether it wasn't opened or already closed for the day. Anyway it was worth coming and exploring the outside of the Centre.

We were lucky to have weather that was lovely, although it was a bit cool and fresh, the sun was shining. A nice fresh winter's day. The kangaroos lazying in the sun, few Emu, and a kookaburra. Its a place I will return to for more adventures, during the summertime.

Cultural centre is closed. Info centre Cafe hasn't opened for years. Small giftshop. That's about it. Wetland walk is terrible and land is screaming out for Management. Wood, leaves and branches everywhere. Really disappointing as it used to be the highlight of the Grampians.

A must see/do experience whilst visiting the Grampians. The film is very entertaining with the history of the area, from many perspectives. The cafe & gift shop are a delight. Try the Lemon Myrtle Scones with a coffee.... unreal, delicious. A memorable experience.

I remember when this was being built and although it still looks good, some of the displays are getting tired, although the information is still good. Located just outside of Halls Gap you can walk or ride along well made paths. Inside is a small cafe where you can dine on fresh food and refreshments. Outside are some excellent interpretation boards that give a history of the area and the life prior to white settlement. The retail shop is extensive with lots of interesting items. There is plenty of parking under the shaded gums. The place is wheelchair friendly and in fact you can motor on your wheelchair from town to the centre. Very kid friendly with lots for the little ones to do. I would say you could spend at s minimum and hour here. There are tours available as well. Enjoy.

Totally surprised. Unsure if we wanted to visit with my son's family. Took the risk - it was amazing. Much, much bigger than you would think. Amazing animals and habitats. Our grandchildren were captivated. A fantastic attraction - under rated and unknown?

A special shoutout to the lovely young lady at the front desk her warm smile and wonderful help set the tone for the day. The girl working in the food van was absolutely incredible friendly, efficient, and so lovely to chat with. And to the amazing keepers who guided us through the most unforgettable Rhino experience wow! Their knowledge, passion, and care for these magnificent animals made it truly magical. Getting up close and learning about the rhinos was something we’ll never forget. Halls Gap Zoo is a credit to everyone who works there. It’s not just a zoo, it’s an experience full of heart, beauty, and incredible people. Highly recommend to everyone! 🦏✨monique and Nathan

A real surprise. Was not expecting a zoo this incredible in this location. Great layout, and plenty of free range animals to get close to. The deer were hilarious and friendly. Get a few feed bags for the walk through the zoo. Also has a great playground inside.

A great little zoo with a relaxed vibe and plenty to see. Grabbed a food bag each at the entrance and had a blast feeding the friendly deer; it definitely added to the experience. The meerkats were hilarious, constantly popping up and checking us out like tine security guards. Paths are easy to follow which helped when a deer ate my map! We saw a good mix of native and exotic animals and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Halls Gap Zoo is definitely worth a visit if you're in the Grampians area.

Fantastic Zoo! We spent a solid 2–3 hours exploring the winding paths, each lined with enclosures featuring a great mix of wildlife—local favourites and international species, from tiny marsupials, monkeys🐒 or reptiles to towering Giraffe's 🦒 The entry fee might feel a bit high at first, but once you see the scale and care involved (rhinos and giraffes aren’t exactly cheap), it’s easy to understand why. Friendly deer and peacocks roam freely and are happy to be hand-fed with feed bags available for purchase. It’s a well-kept, thoughtfully laid-out zoo that makes for a great half-day outing. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

I didn’t plan on visiting the zoo whilst visiting the Grampians/Halls Gap, however I couldn’t help myself after reading the reviews. It is absolutely amazing there! The animals appear to be well looked after and loved, they all have more than suitable enclosures and then you’ve got the free roaming animals which makes it feel so different to most zoos. I would definitely make another trip here just to go to this zoo, hopefully next time I plan ahead and can try out the animal experiences. Not as many animals as mainstream zoos, however the circuit walk, being able to hand feed and get up close & personal with the roaming animals, and the fact that the animals in enclosures there seem genuinely happy makes up for that factor. Be mindful of the deer ambushing you for the feed though! 😂

If you ever take a trip to Halls Gap or Grampians National Park, don't forget to visit this amazing waterfall. This was not in my list when we go there. I visited there on first week of July and the waterfall is just amazing. I thought to visit this after seeing a name board. So worth visiting. You need to take a short walk from car park and you will meet this amazing waterfall. The walk is moderately challenging as pathway may cover with small water ways. Despite that it was an easy walk. Will take around 15-30 mins. The surrounding was also so beautiful

This hiking trail is easily accessible from the car park and suitable for kids. The trail leads to a stunning waterfall located in a beautiful area. It's an ideal spot for a picnic lunch, exploring the surroundings, and continuing on with your travels. The trail is flat, without any hills to climb, and offers opportunities to spot various animals. It's especially worth visiting after heavy rainfall.

Lots of water flowing over falls...looks great! Easy undulating walk in is good.

Very easy walk for all levels of ability, relatively flat terrain. Interesting lack of running water in the rocky creek/river bed. The falls come into view and I guess depending on the rainfall will be how impressive the falls are on the day. Beautiful gully, easy walk, but if you're expecting Mc Kenzies Falls, your going to be disappointed. Still worth the photo opportunity

Visited during start of summer. Small waterfall tucked in nicely in the woods. Enjoyed the trail towards the waterfall. You can actually go very near to the waterfall. But I assume, things will be different during wet seasons. Loved the sound of the winds gushing the trees. If you are coming from Bellfield side, you have to drive past the waterfalls to reach the car park. Can be tricky, if you don’t realise because, of network connectivity issue. Better have offline maps beforehand. No toilets, ample parking spots. Trail is kids and seniors friendly. But prams might find it tricky. Include in your list if you have spare time.

Fairly easy walk; mostly flat. Can be muddy towards the end. A most unusual looking waterfall as the rock layers are very much horizontal all the way down the face.

Wonderful dog friendly winery with an incredible menu of bespoke wine. Taste after taste, every bottle better than the last. Our hosts Annie and Lily were generous with their time, with helping us navigate the area as tourists, and fed us a delicious platter of antipasto. Top notch winery experience: we can’t wait to come back.

We have loved Taltarni wines for many years now which we get here in WA, and were excited to be stopping in on our road trip through Victoria. It was one of the stops we had been looking forward to for a long time. The CD was absolutely amazing and all that we hoped it would be, we had very high hopes. Unfortunately Anne who looked after us left us highly disappointed, she clearly didn’t know much about the wines, we asked a few simple questions but her responses were rude, and she acted like we were interrupting her day. Having waited so long to go there, we left with only 2 bottles as we just wanted to get out of there. We still love the wines, at least they didn’t leave a bitter taste in our mouths.

Dropped in there with friends for a cheese and meat platter and wine . Was very disappointed with the lack of knowledge from the woman serving- Anne - she was outright rude and was obviously lacking in her knowledge. She spoke very rudely to another staff member who looked embarrassed. The cheese platter wasn’t as good as the one we had last year. There was an amazingly knowledgeable woman last year who was friendly and helpful. We bought a lot of wine last year . But she was gone and had been replaced by this Anne who was just plain rude and had no idea about the wine. We left unhappy. We were going to book a large group for November but have decided to go elsewhere instead.

Annie ensured we had the most amazing experience tasting the wines available at Taltarnie. She also provided platters that were a delight, patient, knowledgeable a credit to the winery.

Came in for Easter weekend. The lady behind the bar was useless. Her customer skill were clearly lacking. And it was obvious she knew nothing about the wine she was pouring. Also the coffee was undrinkable. Taltarni use to be our favourite place to visit….we won’t be back

We unfortunately didn’t have a lot of time to explore the museum as we got there 15 minutes before closing (and the staff were kind enough to even let us stay a bit longer!). This is a great museum which tells a very interesting story. A major plus, is that it caters for all ages. I would definitely recommend visiting.

This is a must visit for anyone visiting Ararat or maybe just passing through between Melbourne and Adelaide. The volunteer team of born and bred Ararat white people who have gone to the trouble to research and preserve the early Chinese gold mining history is amazing. The roof of the centre is made with tiles made in China and assembled by Chinese tradesmen who came over to do it authentically. It's a must visit, huge respect to the volunteers who created and maintain this place with no government support. They self fund through tourists visits paying for entry which is well worth it. Without them, the history would be forgotten.

Gum San has some amazing history that many interested in prospecting have heard stories about 👌 But this museum has much more to offer for families & tourists looking for a different perspective of the early Victorian colonial era ! Several interactive displays & guided educational activities 👌

A fascinating insight into the history of Ararat which was effectively built on the back of Chinese gold mining. The price of admission is very cheap, and the ladies who greet you are very knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. So many historical artefacts and pictures to see and interact with. There is also a gift shop on the premises. Highly recommend.

We visited here yesterday. Such a wonderful and informative place to learn about the Chinese influence during the Victorian goldrush. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Thanks for a great experience.

Fascinating tour and gives a great historical context on how we used to deal with incarceration and mental health. Whilst there are some differing views on how we deal with these things now, there were clearly some people that were at different ends of the offending spectrum. Special mention to our guide Alan who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and clearly has a passion for telling the story of this place.

Great experience. Guides are very well versed in their local history and stories. Don't rush it though. You will need probably 2-3 hours to d tour to Aradale which nearby but a different location.

My sister, friend and I went on this tour while we were in the Grampians. We actually did this as a spur of the moment decision, as we were booked into a ghost tour at the Aradale asylum that night. We decided to do the J Ward tour as we saw that this tour offered a lot of things that are not offered at the asylum. Obviously, they are two completely different places, but I would really highly recommend the J Ward as a place where you get an amazing historical understanding of the treatment of people with mental illnesses up until unfortunately the 1990s. We were very lucky to have Graham as our tour guide - he was amazing! He had great stories, a brilliant understanding of the history and you can tell that he is passionate about the prison. We were lucky also to be part of a very small group, a total of seven people including us. This tour is highly recommended, completely run by volunteers but really well preserved. This place has a fascinating history, and was a really great two hours spent. You can also book time to do research if you are interested, but this is only available on certain days, however if you’re a history buff, it certainly would be a great place to find out a bit more about the dark history of this hospital.

J Ward in Ararat is a really interesting place. Yes, well recommended for a visit. Take the tour - it is definitely worth it. The outside façade and internal walls of original blue stone is stunning. The whole premises is very well restored and maintained as a historic site and museum. A lot of effort is taken to preserve the originality. We have visited before (many years back) and will add it to the list for future trips. It has a history interwoven with Aradale mental asylum, on the other side of Ararat. You could add that as a tour to your itinerary as well. The Staff are all volunteers, and were really great - Thank you. A visit is well recommended!

This ghost tour was the best!!!! We got to use paranormal equipment which was so much fun and I also captured an orb when we were in the kitchen area! The guide was also very interesting and informative, this tour is a must if you are in Ararat! 👻

We planned out trip to Ararat especially so we could do the J Ward tour - Pat was a wonderful tour guide - we really enjoyed the small group, and having the time to walk through the spaces. The tour was very informative and interesting. Well worth the visit.

Tour guide was great and relatable. Very knowledgeable about the history or the asylum and has been a guide for 6 years. The tour was maybe a little long- the last hour could have been compacted into being a 5 hour tour. Not particularly scary in my opinion. Many gadgets to detect paranormal activity were supplied. The tour guide made the night more enjoyable that’s for sure.

I went on the 8pm Friday night tour of the Ararat Lunatic Asylum with my sister and a friend while we were in the Grampians. This was a two hour tour, and I would say there was probably about 20 people on the tour with us, with a maximum of 30 people allowed. I have to say that I think 30 people would be too much for this tour, so I was glad that we weren’t at capacity. If this tour was kept at say 15 people, people could ask more questions and it would actually be a little bit more creepier. We knew that there could be up to 30 people so it’s not a criticism of what is advertised, just an observation. Michelle was our guide, and she was very dramatic and theatrical, and set the scene quite well. Michelle was very knowledgeable about the asylum and there was a lot of interesting information that she told us as we went through the different buildings. She’s very well prepared and extremely engaging. This is not a huge point, but given the horrible things done to some of the people in their asylum, perhaps a little bit more sensitivity around some of the stories would have been good, particularly around suicide. Michelle did acknowledge the use of language around mental illness that is not appropriate these days. However, I would have liked to have found out some more stories about some of more individual patients to give a little bit more context to some of the stories As this is pitched as a ghost tour, be prepared for some theatrics with the storytelling. I did, however, get a very eerie feeling when I walked into the asylum, this was a place with some really horrific things happened. In many ways, this is actually very sad tour when you think about the terrible things that people are capable of doing to others. Be prepared for quite a few stairs, and a small walk down a gentle hill to the morgue. The tour is often in the dark, to add to the atmosphere. Some of the people on the tool asked to carry lamps, with one lady asked to be the last person to make sure everyone stayed together. I did find myself using my camera phone in some places, especially when going down and up stairs. There are obviously sensor lights and lighting around the place as well, but it’s dimly lit to add to the atmosphere. Being very old and in disrepair, there is a strong musty smell, and I will admit that I did find many elements of the tour creepy, and did hear some noises that I think were unexplained. My sister also captured a photo that perhaps has an unexplained figure in it. I think I also took a photo with an unexplained element (window in the dance hall). There is definitely a very creepy feel to the place, and the energy does reflect the dark history of the place. If you’re going on the ghost tour, you need to park in a small car park, so I would recommend getting there a little bit more than 15 minutes earlier than recommended. I would not recommend the tour for anyone who is mobility restricted due to the stairs, and there are no chances to sit down during the tour for those people who might need this. Directions to the car park could probably be a little bit clearer on the website, and there could be better lighting in the car park as well. The asylum itself is very musty, so be prepared for that as well. I would recommend this as a fun night out, and some genuine creepiness as an added bonus. I would also really be interested in the day tour with a bit more focus on the history and to see the building from a different perspective during the day.

Aradale has been on my bucket list for many years, Saturday night I finally got to experience this. After the long trip up from SA we entered our 6 hour tour and boy it was worth it. Our tour guide Jasmine was unbelievable in so many ways, her passion, love and dedication was incredible. I learnt so much and experienced something so new. I absolutely loved every moment of our tour

Went on the weekend and did the 4 hour tour. Alice was our guide and she was amazing! Can't fault her delivery or her knowledge. She really made the tour. The tour itself was incredible, access to so many amazing parts and rooms. Highlight was being locked in the chillers in the morgue! Would definitly do the tour again and looking to do the 6 hour investigation next time! Thank you so much for an amazing night

Aradale has a long, dark history, a by product of the time it was built and how mental health was managed. The building has a heaviness and sadness about it. Tour is very informative and well organised. We are going again to book the paranormal tour. Highly recommend the experience

Our group was to large, unfortunately. The atmosphere was great overall. Personally, I'd rather come during the day to take in more of what the history has to offer and actually see the building.

I had the absolute best experience on the 6hr ghost investigation at Aradale. The setting itself is already chilling and full of atmosphere, but what made the night truly unforgettable was our incredible guide, Jasmine. Jasmine struck the perfect balance between knowledgeable historian and paranormal investigator. The investigation itself was fascinating. We had moments of genuine chills, strange unexplained activity, and plenty of chances to explore. If you’re curious about the paranormal or just want an unforgettable night out, I can’t recommend this tour enough. Aradale is already incredible, but with Jasmine leading the way, it’s truly next level.

We had a very enjoyable tasting experience and lunch at Blue Pyrenees. We tasted all the wines available and found plenty that we liked. We particularly enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc and the Shiraz Marsanne. The staff were all very friendly and provided excellent service, particularly the lady who guided us through the tasting and organised our platter lunch. The platter was a good size with an interesting mix of very tasty food.

Absolutely fantastic experience with beautiful wines and incredible platter, Linda was lovely to talk with and described the wines great. Will definitely be back.

My wife and I had the best time at Blue Cafe just last Monday. Without a doubt Linda makes the most flavoursome hot and cold platter we have ever eaten and — we have eaten a great many on our travels. We love the variety, texture and diverse tastes on the platter washed down with a bottle of sparkling rose — a beautiful lunch outside in the sun with our dog Maisie.In fact this is our fifth platter here and it is by far our favourite winery destination. We visit at least once a year for the wonderful platters and wine. They cater to all our dietaries (gluten free, pescatarian) with ease and their kids menu is small but really well done.

Don’t leave without ordering the delicious House Platter (…it gets better every time… always something different to tantalise the tastebuds!) that pairs perfectly with any of the wines available. Amazing experience!!! Séan met us as we strode up to the cellar door and gave us an impromptu tour of the corking process for bubbles "methode tradionelle"...... absolutely intriguing! The freezing process following time on lees, the cork size pre insertion...... to see it in action was incredible!! Then upstairs for an amazing platter & wine tasting with Linda! That platter was next level......catering for our dietary requirements and also substantial!!! Linda's wine knowledge was exceptional! Grand old building. History laid on.

After receiving state funding from Heritage Victoria the magnificent Maryborough Station underwent a 4‐year three-stage restoration of the façade, the slate roof and clock tower and glazed lantern covering the main carriageway platform completed in 2012. It is a tribute to the Victorian Railways, Architectural Works Department completed in 1890 as an outstanding example to the school of Victorian railway architecture developing a regional rather than national or international modern style. It is one of the finest examples in the country of Queen-Anne architecture which displays many hallmarks of the Anglo‐Dutch style which is enlivened at the roofline with gables and an asymmetrically placed clock tower. During the 1970’s much of the original facade ornamentation, the orbs, pedestals and ball-caps and rendered octagonal chimney crowns were sadly removed. These were carefully re-cast and reinstated as part of the restoration programme. The exterior was re-rendered using Adelaide ‘Brightonlite’ yellow-ocher oxide cement render. The residents of Maryborough were delighted with the result and applauded its face-lift and remarked “this is how it was meant to be” and how they could remember the way the station looked originally. An outstanding feature of Maryborough Station is its long platform covered by a continuous glazed lantern at the apex. This is said to be the longest single platform outside the Melbourne region and measures 1010 meters including the rail motor sidings. Today, Maryborough Station operates an art gallery emporium, a fully licensed restaurant in the grand dining hall (thanks Lloyd) and VLine post and freight services for passenger and goods trains. On our way home to Mount Gambier today we stopped in to Marlborough station hoping for coffee and early feed....OMG we were not disappointed... The best cooked breakfast I have ever experienced....every mouthful delicious and well presented...chai late..prefect... What lovely friendly staff.....amazing atmosphere....do your self a favour if travelling and looking for a good feed...worth the stop....

A beautifully maintained and peaceful spot! Ballarat Botanical Gardens is nicely arranged and was already showing signs of vibrant life as it gets ready for the spring bloom. The avenue of former Prime Ministers' statues adds a historical touch. Plenty of black swans and coots from the nearby lake add to the charm. Great for a relaxed, scenic walk. 🌿🦢🌼

We spent the whole day here and had so much fun. Such a beautiful spot. And the kids enjoyed it too. We made a competition about how many statues we could find. Large wooden playground as well and plenty of parking. Good amount of toilet blocks spread out around the area.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Absolutely stunning! The Ballarat Botanical Gardens are a true gem. Strolling along Lake Wendouree with the gardens on one side and the water on the other is pure serenity. The Prime Ministers Avenue is a unique and fascinating walk through Australian political history—each bronze bust is beautifully crafted and adds a thoughtful touch to the experience. The highlight for me was the Conservatory. It's a vibrant burst of colour and fragrance, with seasonal floral displays that are always changing and always spectacular. Whether you're a local or just visiting Ballarat, this place is a must-see. Peaceful, educational, and beautifully maintained—5 stars without hesitation!

A very nicely set out Botanical Gardens. Well maintained. There is a lake nearby as well as a tourist tram. The Avenue of the Former Prime Ministers Statues along the main path in the gardens was interesting to see. It is a peaceful place to have a walk through or to sit and rest. Well worth a look to see.

Well maintained gardens; clean toilets with disability access ♿ Perfect place to visit if you looking for a relaxing day out. Wide range of stunning flowers continue to impress you as you walk around. All botanicals are labelled for easy reference. Beautiful statues including Australia’s prime ministers. Greenhouse is amazing with beautifully arranged plants in a variety of mixed colours. They sell plants near the information centre. Well located and not too far from the city centre. Very friendly staff. Do take a minute to thank them for the stellar job they are doing ✨

Always a lovely spot, 6km running/walking/bike track around the lake, getting lights put in which will be great for safety at dusk and early mornings. Lots of bird life, great for kayaking, SUP or windsurfing and fishing. Lots of playgrounds and toilets around every side of the lake.

Really nice spot. We don't have lakes where we live and so found this to be really nice, the style of buildings in this area set a really lovely scene when looking out across the lake and bird life was abundant. We stopped to see at a few different points around the lake, the adventure playground, and some of the boat houses were great. This is also a great spot to go for a jog or just stroll along the walking tracks.

A beautiful spot for a walk, lots a great views to be had of the local bird life and historic buildings. There is a walking track right around the lake, which you can also ride a bike along to. Lots of places to stop and take in the views and capture some great moments. There are several playground around the lake with the main one on the west side near the Botanical Gardens. There are also old tram rides and paddle boat rides at certain time of the year. Small boats and fishing are also allowed on the lake. A great place to visit for the day.

A really beautiful walk around Lake Wendouree. Plenty of wildlife, viewpoints and a few points of interest around the lake. The walk itself is not far at all and the pathways are quite clear and suitable for pushchairs / wheelchairs. Dogs are allowed around the lake (on-leash) and there's a few cafes / restaurants for a coffee and snacks.

Amazing lake which is spread over a vast expanse. It has got walking/ running trail along its edge which provides good opportunity for people run, walk, cycle at their leisure. The lake itself is pretty clean and has got lots of birds and ducks etc. Some people had fishing rods with them as well, not sure if there are any fishes on offer though. Overall a good place to visit if you are in the area.

There's a wonderful walking track that circles this lake (from memory, around 7km) and as if the views across the lake aren't enough, there are some simply lovely botanic gardens, the Robert Clark Conservatory and a few other surprises. I love this track. And if you have the right day for it, the lake is gorgeous at dusk.

The place where you can get connected with the nature sounds and enjoy with your love ones. I really like this lake. The wildlife and surrounding is fantastic. And yeah, Don't Forget the Dawn and Sunset its amazing.

I went there today. The best thing about this gallery is location which is close to station and shopping areas. Some of the collections were amazing and visiting it is completely free of charge. Just one show these days is a paid one. There were works from a ballarat based artist which were superb. The gallery also had a gift shop to purchase souvenirs as well as a cafe for relaxing. The washrooms were very clean. The staff was really nice. Overall it was a good experience.

We liked this gallery as it was quiet and well-maintained. It wasn’t a big place, they offered about five different exhibitions, from classic paintings to modern art. They also had a small shop and a cafe on the ground floor, which was nice and cozy.

A well maintained art gallery with beautiful paintings. The guided tour was also very interesting and informative. There were some nice books in the store downstairs as well.

The gallery resides in a beautiful building that dates back to the town's gold rush boom years. Free entry to see a great collection of Australian and European art with some dating back to 1800 or earlier. There were also temporary exhibitions and modern art installations. Apparently only 2% of their art is able to be displayed there at any one time so it may be worth a follow up visit later on.

I went to the Art Gallery of Ballarat today on a Friday. It was not busy. Entry was free which is great. Only a few minutes walk from Ballarat railway station. The Gallery is very interesting with a lot of interesting arts. It's very clean and nice like a 5-star hotel. I loved and enjoyed all the arts that they displayed, really appreciate all the staff for taking care of the place so well and highly appreciate all the artists that provided their artwork there.

Beautiful art gallery with interesting and thoughtful art. Place was packed last Sunday despite the rain, the Vintage Car Show, part of Ballarat's Heritage Festival. It was free entry on that day. We had a walk through downstairs but couldn't handle the crowd so didn't make it upstairs. Will be back.

The building is absolutely lovely! It's so nice to see that it was purpose built, and continues to house many creative works of art. Highly recommend a visit if you are in Ballarat.

Husband and I loved our visit on Wednesday! We were there for roughly 5 hours and there was plenty to see and do that we didn't have much down time or waiting around. Wasn't too busy which was a bonus, so we got to quietly enjoy a lot of the experiences and shops minus the 2-3 school excursions running around, but we didn't cross paths often. The staff did a wonderful job at making the experience feel immersive and authentic, and we loved that there were things to enjoy as adults. Definitely recommend buying the mine tour or the photo time slot in advance!

A fantastic day or 2 out for the whole family. Step back in time and explore Australia's gold rush history. Cute shops, delicious food from a bakery to a Cafe. We live how the staff are not only in costumes but character too. The displays, tours are really well done.

While visiting Vic/Ballarat area thought I'd pop into here for something to do. Allocated a few hours. Ended up staying all day. It was incredible. Best way to describe it was a living museum. The staff there (mostly volunteer) were all in character and dressed up and so amazingly friendly. Themed so well and had a fantastic time. Highly recommended this place and I'll certainly go back. Did a mine tour as well and found that fascinating.

Visiting Sovereign Hill felt like stepping straight into the 1850s. The whole place brings the gold rush era to life with incredible detail, from the mining demonstrations to the dusty streets and costumed characters. We tried our hand at gold panning and, to our surprise, actually found gold! It was such a fun, hands‑on moment that made the day unforgettable. A brilliant experience for anyone wanting history with a bit of adventure.

We attended Aura at Sovereign hill and it was a fantastic experience. The 3 elements of the show were great, breaking up the story telling and the way it was showcased was a great way to see and hear the story. There was a school attending the same night we did (roughly 60ish students) but the team did a great job of moving everyone around through the 3 different experiences. Really worth the visit.

Solid gold. Sovereign Hill is a family friendly romp through early gold mining in Victoria, historical town with a unique blend of hand tools and functioning Industrial Revolution technologies make this a prize in Victoria. From the shops to the Poppet head frame a variety of interesting artifacts and a knowledgeable period attired staff that are eager to explain the town. This will take 4-6 hours to get a good self-guided tour. The gardens on the hill are a pleasant diversion from the rustic backdrop, don’t miss it!!

Even as adults we had a lovely day there, even with a sprinkle of rain. Still have the same memories of the place from 20+ years ago, which speaks to their upholding of the heritage component of the place. Underground tour was great, candy shop was delicious. Red Coats March is a must attend.

Absolutely amazing time we had here. We had the gatehouse room sleeps 6!! Loved having the castle to ourselves (and the few other residents) after hours, kids have has the best time even with no amusements on. The castle is amazing to explore and do the maze in the dark by moon light. Location is great too. Just far enough out of Ballarat to be quiet and remote but local enough to drive into town for dinner and back. ☺️ Kids have asked to come back already and we haven't left yet. Lots of activities for everyone to get involved in and staff have been super friendly and helpful. ☺️ Definitely on our list of places to come back to ❤️

We stayed at a caravan site and had park entrance. The site was fantastic! 10/10 you really can’t go wrong with any site! They are all fabulous! The park was wonderful. The kids had a great time, the staff are wonderful and the acting from the charters in the park was fantastic. I don’t usually rate anything but this 100% exceeded our expectations!

Came during school holidays for the goblins and fairies activities and were disappointed as there simply wasn’t anything on! Website says there’s fairies, goblins, wizards etc and characters wandering around with activities to do - nothing like that on all day! Incredibly overpriced and be aware everything inside costs extra and is an obvious money grab. Jousting lasted 20 mins, eatery sold out of everything good before 2pm and all the stores (which are permanent rentals) were overpriced for Temu items. It’s incredibly small also, thought it’d take a day to see, we were done pretty quickly and it does close quite early. Animals are also kept in small, dirty pens during the castle opening hours. Poor Kevin the peacock was a particularly sad sight to see. Also not accessible for the elderly or disabled - no ramps at all, incredibly unstable and hilly stoned paths/roads. Disappointing. We stayed in a King room overnight, again highly overpriced for what you get. Avoid in Winter as big gap under the front door would make it freezing. Dirty bathroom, no water pressure, lumpy mattress. Wouldn’t recommend staying here!

Went to a Halloween event over the weekend. Found the whole experience and what the grounds have to offer extremely underwhelming. Definitely cannot spend a whole day there as there’s minimal to see and do. Quite boring, even for the little kids. Shows were the highlight of the visit. Overpriced for what it is. Our first and last visit there. Do not recommend.

Haven't been here since I was a kid. Took my family with me. And we loved every bit of it! Food was great. The entertainment was abustly amazing. My highlight was having a great chat to the blacksmith. Definitely coming back again!

We took the family up for the faries, goblins and knights school holiday fun and my girls had a blast. They were dressed up as fairies and searched the grounds for different things. They got to be apart of giving the favour to one of the knights and were so excited. All the characters make it super fun. I do love coming here

Interesting place and the unicorn festival was particularly fun for kids. Not sure what it's like on a normal day. I wouldn't go out of my way for it normally but in this case we drove out an hour or so and had a nice day. (And Google, it's not a hotel so I can't comment on the rooms etc!)

Awesome views from this volcanic scoria peak across the landscape. Easy to get to and you can drive right up the top with just a few steps to get to the very peak. We also went to Mount Elephant which is another volcano that can be see off in the distance and looks like an elephant lying down. We will have a YouTube up on this mid June but this one is a big hike from the base to the top.

Just WOW! A breathtaking 360° view over Colac and the lakes. Easily accessible from the carpark, just a couple of steps up. Totally worth it!

Interesting panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape and Lake Corangamite. A quick, easy walk to the summit rewards you with nice scenery.

My stay was short and it was raining when I was there but it’s a nice place, gives the wow vibe and sure to spend quality time or picnic.

Wanted to come here for quite a while, finally did. Great lookout. Highly reccomend, gives you the lay of the land of the basalt plains and lakes. Was very dry when I went there from about 3 months of drought

Beautiful lookout, worth the drive if you visit nearby/ colac area. Not worthy to visit only this by itself. Be careful about the drive to the hill as the road might feel a bit narrow and offer no side supports.

While the location offers a pleasant and comfortable ambiance with good products, the service has been consistently poor during our two visits. On both occasions, despite selecting and paying for a tasting flight, we experienced significant delays as customers who arrived after us were prioritised. This suggests either understaffing or a flawed system for prioritising customers, and it significantly detracts from the overall experience.

Fantastic experience and would come here again, the fella that was making the pizza today was enthusiastic and really brought up the vibe. He makes brilliant wood fired pizzas as well to make the experience much better .

A great place to visit after seeing the local sights Try one of their Prickly Moses beer range or a Forbidden Fruit ciders. We absolutely loved them. There's also their Rainforest Gins or a selection of wine. Make sure you order something from their menu too, the food is delicious. I had loaded nachos which was awesome. The service was fantastic, they took the time to explain all the ranges and helped us chose, with a little taste testing too. A wonderful local and friendly, relaxing place. Thank you.

Very sad to only able to order pizza. Good dog friendly brewery cafe. Been there a couple of time before the menu was reduced and the previous menu was delicious very much miss the fried chicken and chips. Still their XPA is best ale in town.

An interesting estate that has been restored to a great extent. The mansion is listed with the National Trust and has been furnished with many period pieces to complement some original items from the home. There is a function space that is used for weddings, etc. It would be great to see further restoration projects to continue to preserve the integrity of the structure. The guided tour provides insight into the fascinating history of the past residents and their contributions to the development of the region. It's great to see that a book has been published about this mansion. Guided tours run on the hour. Stairs may be challenging to negotiate for some.

This was a great tour, I love wandering around historic houses, but rarely do they make me feel sad for the occupants. Barwon Park Mansion did, and not just because the exterior seems reminiscent of Pentridge Prison. The family's story was one of great wealth - a giant house in the middle of nowhere speaks to that - overlaid with the deprivations that living 150 years ago brought. And that's not just commodes and children sleeping on the veranda year round. Our tour guide conveyed this and more in ninety minutes, and it was never boring. I'm glad we made the detour to see Barwon Park. It is a surprising part of our colonial history with two - to me - surprising facts about imports and hospitals.

We arrived at a rainy Sat and fortunately had one of my best guided tour with National Trust so far. Our guide Cameron was caring, kind and accomodating, he’s showed us the rich historical site and garden, as well as present the story of the 2 families who’s living there for a century including the Austins. He made pauses for me to translate for my grandparents and did the tour in a pace that’s elderly friendly. Overall this is a masterpiece with artifacts and antiques, worse a visit if you enjoy history.

I have visited the mansion during the September open day. The guide, Ann, was very knowledgeable and engaging. The mansion is gorgeous - a real hidden gem.

A beautiful and inspiring place both outside and inside. Almost all rooms are furnished with furniture, which is a rarity. Large area around Mantion, good for waliking. The tour was good with mystical stories, though it was a bit scary about the ghosts stories, but interesting.👍I very like and reccomed to visit.

We arrived at this place at first it felt like stepping into a different world. It was beautiful, peaceful, serene, and even seen wildlife, and then sadly, not too long into going in, other humans came in talking and laughing so very loudly, screaming kids running around. And the beauty just kinda went away. There were signs up saying to keep noise levels down, but most humans have no respect for anyone or anything anymore. It was also school holiday time, so that probably didn't help, but when that's the only time you can go, it makes it hard. It was still beautiful, despite the extreme loudness of adults and children 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ We got up to the walk way part and I'm scared of heights, but I pushed myself to do it all, as it was beautiful. But the number of adults and children repeatedly making it bounce was not pleasent. I don't mind people doing it once as a bit of fun, but repeatedly, grow up. Despite other humans peeing me off and somewhat ruining this experience, I did enjoy myself, and I will try to go back during non school holiday time, when hopefully it won't be as busy. A wonderful experience. Try to go when it's not so busy and try to be mindful of noise levels and other people. If people were quiet, I reckon we would have gotten to see more wildlife.

We had a great time at Otway Fly Treetop adventures. It wasn't the greatest weather but that kept the crowds away and really left the whole park to us. It's a little bit of a walk from the car park but the disabled parking is much closer. Once you start your adventure it's a nice down hill trek, climbing up to the tree tops isn't terrible. It's a nice walk through the tree tops and super safe. Once you get to the end of the tree tops walk way you start your trek back up hill and it gets to be a climb. If it gets too much you can call the desk and they will send a buggy to get you. Overall we really enjoyed our time doing the walk. If you're super adventurous you can do their zip line adventure as well.

We have been here multiple times before and we were excited to return but a little disappointed. As a family of 5 with young kids, we can confidently advise that the experience was negatively impacted by the addition of cheap fairies, gnomes and dragons which seems to be purchased from the local $2 shop. Without this sideshow, we would have given Otway Fly another star. As owners or visitors please focus on the breathtaking rainforest and the impressive canopy walk. The attraction speaks for itself with the added cheap plastic mythical creatures. Staff were lovely and facilities/visitor centre well maintained and clean. Hidden gem of South Eastern Australia, minus the unicorns.

Put on your walking shoes. It is lovely to walk among the treetops and the canopy. Its approx 1km to the tower. To start, there is a 20 min down-hill walk (and 30+ mins back. Lol) to the start of the treetop walk. Then the walk. Then scores of steps down. Then a 1 km uphill walk back. There is a cafe at the Visitors Centre. Also meet here for the 'fly'. Lockers, loos, and playground here too. And a gift shop... 🎁

We went on the Tree Top and Rain Forest walks. Just stunning! So unique to see the rain forest from above. The walk was a bit challenging (especially on the return) but quite achievable for most people. The drive to the venue was worth the journey. Great value for money. Recommend this as an activity. We didn’t do the aerial run. But it looks exciting. Would recommend to book in advance if you want to do this as it was booked out.

Very cool place, beautifully looked after you can tell the groundskeepers love their work. The flying fox was so much fun and the people are so kind and professional! I was a bit scared but felt at ease quickly. The cafe staff and reception staff are also very lovely 100% recommend this place! Thank you so much! As I was typing this an employee checked on me to make sure I was alright (I’m by myself sitting on the swing) everyone here is so so sweet!

We did the Zipline package, and recommend that you give yourself at least 5 hours to see everything - it is a lot of walking. Well worth it, but more walking than we expected. To reduce the amount of walking, you should do an early zipline, as you end near the bottom and you can do the tree top walk on the way up. No need to walk it 2X. Staff were very knowledgeable and fun. I felt safe, the equipment was well maintained and the staff ensured we were properly fitted, etc. I would do it again!

A nice walk amongst the rainforest. Grade 3, 1 hour loop (but with stops and children with us we spent just over 2 hours). Although grade 3 our 5 year old managed it easily. The steps and walkways make navigating the terrain easy. Lots of majestic 300 year old mountain ash trees, lovely sounds of the forest and of course the waterfall. You can’t actually walk up to the falls themselves but can observe from a nice viewing platform. Car park is large, space for about 30 cars. Public toilet, rain water tank to wash hands.

Very lovely walk. Took us ca 45 minutes. Bit of stairs up and down but not too difficult. Views... spectacular!!! Tree Ferns were amazing!! Love the nature there!! Waterfall were ok. Also worth taking the drive to the right when leaving the falls... phenomenal drive!

Beautiful waterfalls. Relatively easy walk, our 4yo did the whole walk with no worries, and our 2yo just needed a shoulder ride up the steps. Recommended going after rain, which up there is most of the year!

Triplet waterfall is one of the best waterfalls in Victoria! I went there three days ago and that was an incredible place. I would say that, if you wanna visit a place where you can find peace of mind and the beauty of nature, high peak of trees and pure water.

Beautiful walk down to Triplet Falls. Not too difficult but there are some steep sections to be aware of if you struggle to get around. We also went to the Little Aire Falls which were further away but no less spectacular. The trek there was quite up and down but we both managed to get there and back without any issues.

Very nice track that is maintained by the frequent use of walkers. Did the full loop track in approx 30mins. Track was beautiful and so were the falls however could not see the full view of the 3 falls from the mains viewpoints.

We went there end of the day on our own, it was great, tour takes about an hour and it’s easy for kids (ours are 5 and 9). Don’t hesitate

Whether you're staying in Lorne or just passing through on the the great ocean road the Erskine falls is a must. There are two views of the fall, and upper and lower. The upper is a fairly easy walk and it's all concrete stairs. The lower falls again is an all concrete step path but it's a good climb down and up. There are 2 benches along away if you need to stop. The lower falls viewing area is well worth it. The day we walked it it had rain and was drizzling but didn't make it bad walking. Overall this is a great shirt hike with beautiful views. Highly recommended

Erskine Falls inland from Lorne is a GEM :) Yes, well recommended. It is a about 12 km out of town, follow the signs. The road is through beautiful forest. There is parking at the start of the walk. The walk is down many stairs. The stairs to the first lookout is not too bad (80m). Allow 5 minutes down. The second lookout is down about 200 more steep stairs (200m). Allow another 15 minutes down. Then allow 30 minutes back up. Need about an hour all up. Need rest on the way down, and take your time coming back up. The walk was quite busy with people, considering the remoteness and fitness level required. No tour busses, mostly "locals". The view of the Erskine Falls is well worth the effort. Yes, well recommended.

Easy 80 meter walk to top lookout. Quite a few (concreted) steps. 220 m (lot more steps) to bottom view. No toilets here. The 2× other walks were closed as at Sept 2025.

Worth the visit, about a 15 minute drive from Lorne (solid road) with quite a big parking in front. The upper falls are a 2 minute walk with some stairs from the parking lot. Very minimal. The lower part of the falls is 200 meters down and about 100 stairs. Big waterfall with two view points.

Amazing!!! So pretty. Walked to the main falls and also the next falls down. It was very slippery after the rain and the steps down to the lower lookout are steep (keep in mind for kids or elderly people) but the upper lookout is great too!

Stunning falls! Such a beautiful place with 2 views upper and then lower. Lot more steps to lower but worth the effort if you are able.

Park spots are limited here. Two look outs down there. First very easy fron the top just couple of minutes. Second you nedd to walk down the stairs not too many and two benches on the way for rest. Put one hour to visit around. Very beautiful.

The park is beautiful, with popular sections around the waterfall, but it actually extends much further. Visiting Castle Rock can be quite challenging, with steep uphill sections, but the effort is rewarded with stunning views. If you’re just making a stop along the Great Ocean Road, the waterfall is easily accessible from the main street.

Visiting Cape Otway Lightstation felt like stepping into a dream I didn’t know I had. The drive there—rolling hills, endless greens, and glimpses of the ocean—already felt cinematic. The Twelve Apostles were grand but crowded; Otway, on the other hand, was quiet and peaceful, the kind of place where time seems to slow down. Standing there, with the lighthouse in front, the hills in the foreground, and the vast ocean behind, it honestly felt like being inside a postcard. The scenery is so damn picturesque - it’s a feast for the eyes and a balm for the mind. The wind was strong, the air was cold, and yet it all felt grounding. Even the Lightkeeper’s Café added its own warmth. Their scones with cream and jam were unforgettable - comfort on a plate after the sea breeze. It's the best I've tasted in all honesty. For a first-time visitor to Australia, Cape Otway wasn’t just another stop; it was a quiet kind of magic that lingers long after you leave.

Great Otway National Park (also known as Cape Otway) stretches from Torquay, along the world-famous Great Ocean Road and up through the Otways hinterland in Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺. This is a beautiful place to visit. The amazing views of the coastline along with the gorgeous waterfalls and beauty of the rainforest makes for a wonderful experience. The beauty of the huge trees is so memorable. Some of the giant beech trees are over 300 years old. If you are looking to camp, you can either park your caravan or pitch a tent ⛺️. You can camp at either Johanna, Aire River or Blanket Bay. There’s an abundance of wildlife, you might be lucky to spot a koala 🐨 or two like we did. It’s also worth making a trip to the light station if you have the time. The views are amazing. You can also have a look in the lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers house. There’s tables there to sit and rest. There are pretty good walking paths through the forest. The park is situated approximately 162 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. It has a very diverse range of landscapes and vegetation types. It’s very popular with local, interstate and international visitors. If you go at night, you might be able to see glow worms along the stream banks and walking trails. Particularly at Beauchamp Falls. It’s definitely worth a visit, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Nice place for picnic… packed one as one has to be environment friendly. This spot is great for a break when you are on the Great Ocean Road venture.

If you want to have a walk, it takes around 30-40 minutes to do a loop, it depends on how much time you take to see around. If you are lucky, you could see Koalas, although it is not easy as this is a rain forest. The ferns are amazing, and they are all well managed along the tracks. It is a good idea to have warm clothes as it might get cool inside the rain forest. Nature lovers, you will love this one!

I just had to find wild koalas during my trip to Australia and based on web reviews, I figured this would be one of the best chances I had. When we pull into the parking areas the first things we see are kookaburras, ducks, parrots, and cockatoos everywhere. As I am taking photos the birds land on my head to perch twice (I did not have any feed at all with me, and birds tend to bite me so I had no intention of getting that close, but it made for some fun photos). When the busses leave, the birds calm down and stay in the trees awaiting the next group of bird-seed carrying tourists. My husband and I decide to walk up the road to spot koalas and sure enough we see several of them sleeping in the crooks of the trees. As we are coming back down, another tour group is there and everyone is pointing. Sure enough there is a koala sleeping right next to the path at the very start of the trailhead and we had just missed it the first time. Made for some fantastic close-up photos (using my telephoto lens). Also there is a walk by the river on the other side of the shop that had lots of informational signs about the wildlife of the region. We had a great time seeing the native animals in the wild.

Magical place

A beautiful town with an amazing beach. Very nice place to have picnics (just be careful of the cockatoos) and a good stroll with your dogs. They provide plastic bags for your dog's poop, and I find that very considerate for the community.

This is a beautiful beach in Lorne. There are good facilities here with bbq, wash rooms, nice seating areas with benches etc located just near the beach. There's plenty of free parking available too. And the best part of it is a very friendly Cockatoo that may visit you if you are in luck.

Had a really great day at this beach. It has a nice play area for the kids and plenty of spots for bbq. There are toilets too.

Lovely town on Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Australia.

Great location for a photo of the great Ocean road. There are lots of little loop walks in the area and are generally easy going. Worth bringing the kids as no problem them negotiating the track. Lots of photo opportunities. Picnic area too if inclined.

Do not miss this look out! Its a wonderful view that shows you so much of the great Ocean road and surrounding beaches, very easily accessible and incredibly beautiful!! So impressive! Also not sure why it says tickets are needed, this is completely free.

Great little lookout and worth the 5 min drive up there. Beautiful views of the George river and South Ocean and Great Ocean Road. Tons of cockatoos flying around.

Teddy’s Lookout is an absolute gem! The views are breathtaking, perfect for a relaxing escape or a scenic photo moment. Beautiful stop with a great view. Very short walk to the lookout. 200 meters further is a second lookout (which is slightly better) and a third around the 300 meters mark (not worth it)

Visiting Split Point Lighthouse was a fantastic experience, especially for fans of the classic TV show *Round the Twist*. Seeing the iconic lighthouse in person brought back a wave of nostalgia, and it’s even more impressive up close than it appears on screen. The structure is beautifully maintained and stands proudly against the stunning coastal backdrop of Aireys Inlet. One of the highlights of our visit was the guided tour. The volunteers on duty were incredibly friendly, approachable, and full of fascinating information about the lighthouse’s history and operation. They were more than happy to answer questions and shared many interesting stories about how the lighthouse functioned in the past. Their passion and knowledge made the visit even more engaging. The cost of the tour is very reasonable — $12.50 for adults and $11 for kids — and well worth it for the experience. Climbing to the top is a bit of a workout, but completely manageable, and the reward is absolutely worth it. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of the rugged coastline and sparkling ocean below. It’s a perfect spot for photos and a moment to take in the natural beauty of the Great Ocean Road. Split Point Lighthouse is more than just a historic site — it’s a fun and educational outing for families, couples, and history buffs alike. Highly recommended for anyone passing through the area. We’ll definitely be returning next time we’re nearby.

Childhood nostalgia unlocked. Those who remember the old Australian TV show Around The Twist, know exactly what this lighthouse is. Pay the money, climb the stairs and you'll do yourself a great favour. The views are amazing and honestly the best. Parking is pretty easy. Just make sure you park not in someone's driveway and a nude my local parking laws.

It was an amazing experience, especially if you haven't been inside a lighthouse before. The view was spectacular and it is a must see if you stop by in aireys inlet. However, it is a paid experience.

We visited yesterday May 26th. Our guide was really good. So passionate and gave us such interesting information. The view from the top was beautiful. This is a great stop when driving the Great ocean road. The general store in Airey's Inlet is also a good stop if you need to pick up things.

We get a traffic fine of wrong parking here. Our car was parked on off road area but opposite the traffic direction, which is parked at the right side, but left side is infront of resident which will block them. Unless make a u turn & park as follow direction. Surprise that we get fine, have emailed to the authority but rejected, as we r foreign tourist & never obstruct any traffic, it was quite full parking & a few cars get fine, be aware! The toilet is far away 500m from light house, recommend b4 u reach, turn right at the junction to the toilet which is nearer to sea side, then drive up again to the entrance.
