(Translated by Google) This café offers a wide selection of cakes and some warm dishes as well as ice cream and coffee specialties. After a visit to the Aboretum, it's the perfect end to a beautiful day. We had cheese/tangerine cake and apple/poppy seed cake and a large pot of coffee for twelve euros, which is normal given today's prices. Inside, the hall is a bit reminiscent of a cafeteria and seemed a little too big to me with the cake counter directly behind the entrance area. The toilets are small, but clean and easy to access. You can sit outside directly in front of the café or in front of the event pavilion, as well as next to the entrance area of the Aboretum. At the pavilion, tables and chairs are equipped with large parasols so that you don't have to sit in the sun. There are toilets there too, even one for the disabled. A pretty place and definitely a feast for the eyes from the outside.

(Translated by Google) Super warmly run café. I felt very comfortable and had a nice time with my girlfriend 🌸. The cake tasted very good and so did the coffee. There is also ice cream, hearty dishes and cakes. There is a strawberry field right next to the café. Here you can pick strawberries yourself, but you can also buy them. Not to forget that there is the opportunity to purchase garden plants directly at the café. Very versatile. A little more attention could be paid to clean tables, but it wasn't that dramatic. Overall still 5 stars from me 🌟.

(Translated by Google) On the way back from my bike tour I wanted to treat myself to something good. It was Saturday afternoon and for me it was just the right time for a cappuccino and a piece of cake. When I arrived there were only a few visitors sitting outside. As always, it is a bit dark inside. There was only one woman in front of me at the counter. I really liked that. When it came to my turn, I asked if I could pay by card. The less pleasant answer from the friendly woman and waitress was that the reader didn't work. I said that I don't have any cash, I have to starve now. I had already said what I would like. Great idea, let's try it again. And no one believes me, the reader is working again. I told the two women who were really trying that it was my positive energy :) Then they told me that some visitors had not been able to order anything because card payment was not possible. I'm also wondering why I couldn't come sooner :) Explained that I was out and about the whole time :) I then looked for a nice place outside with my tray and cappuccino and cake. I was pleased that visitors can now pay by card again. It's very nice to experience something like that. I drank the cappuccino and ate the piece of cake :) For me, it's the beautiful moments that I really enjoy. 5 stars from me for the café.

The selection of cakes or hot dishes, as well as hot or cold drinks, is sufficient, so there is something for everyone. You can sit outside on warm days, which is recommended as it is too stuffy and warm inside, but you can also sit inside on cooler days. (Translated by Google) The best cafe in the area...we really enjoy coming here. You feel comfortable and the service is always friendly and courteous. The cake and tarts are incredibly delicious. We have already tested the contribution offer with friends. The iced coffee is also highly recommended. You can tell that there is still love and passion here, that people enjoy being a service provider here. The price-performance ratio is really good. It's a shame that we'll soon have to be without the nice boss and her team for a long time. But everyone was granted the time out, We hope that things will continue with the old crew in March. You almost feel at home here. Stay healthy dear ones and see you soon.

Peace memorial & disturbing exhibits on Nazi atrocities at a former camp for political prisoners.
Not what I had oringnally thought it would be. But our guide Marco was very informative, and I learnt so much more than I expected. To remember and honour the past to ensure we don't repeat the mistakes of the past.

2025.02.15: free to enter, half an hour away from Hamburg, by car. The area is huge, if you're planning to go through in detail and also read everything you'll need multiple hours to do that. The place has a special atmosphere where you can really feel the weight of the happenings of the past. Worth visiting.
Bálint K — Google review
I spent 5 to 6 hours here , totally worth the commuting to this memorial. Even on a rainy day, it was worth it, it actually gave a deeper experience. Very wide big place. Advise hearing the audios of testimonies and take some time for reading to emerge into it. Altought peaceful, heavy.
Celia M — Google review
Very informative and eye opening experience. The premise is spread over a very big area. So be prepared to walk a lot in the open. Unfortunately we visited on a rainy day, so couldn't explore much of the ground. But exhibition is very informative with lots of original photos and documents. Entry and exhibition are free.
Shruti P — Google review
It's hard to rate a place so full of sad memories and dark times. But the place itself is quiet, somber, and very respectful of its history. The displays are thoughtful and deep. I was particularly moved by the albums that were about a single person. When you read them and realize that over 100,000 passed thru the camp, it's an overwhelming moment.
Kevin D — Google review
This concentration camp became a prison after WWII, before becoming an exhibition centre. Therefore, there aren't many original features of the camp which remain. There is a lot of learning material available in the exhibition space, with photos and information. You have to pick up separate cards at each exhibit point if you want to read in English French or Polish. The reception desk has a map which suggests a one hour or two hour route of the camp.
Sujit R — Google review
Free to visit. You can still feel the menacing atmosphere. Many old buildings still intact and the exhibitions were interesting with lots of old stuff from the camps.
Ville H — Google review
Recommended if you want to know more details about the World War 2 and the life of prisoners in this concentration camp. We can only imagine the effect that it left on so many families.

Serengeti Park Hodenhagen

Zoo
Nature & Parks
Serengeti Park Hodenhagen is a fantastic destination that combines the thrill of an amusement park with the wonder of a safari experience. This unique animal park and holiday resort features free-roaming wildlife, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace in their vehicles. The park is well-organized and clean, making it easy for families to navigate while enjoying both animal encounters and exhilarating rides suitable for all ages.
One of a kind zoo. Safari in our own car is something very convenient for families and with that we were able to experience the animals in very close proximity. Animals looked well fed and in good shape unlike other zoos i have visited. There are also various free rides in the park both for kids and adults. Various food stalls and also WC were available throughout the park and very well maintained. Staff were also very friendly and helpful. Definitely a must visit place and it was very well spent day out for us 😊
HR — Google review
Serengeti Park Hodenhagen absolutely exceeded our expectations! We had an amazing time exploring the self drive safari. It's incredibly well organized and gives you a rare chance to see exotic animals up close from the comfort of your own car. From giraffes walking past our windows to rhinos grazing nearby, the whole experience felt like a mini African adventure right in Germany. What impressed us the most was how smoothly everything ran. Entry was well coordinated, the drive-through routes were clearly marked, and there were friendly staff around to guide and assist if needed. The animals appeared healthy and well cared for, with plenty of space to roam. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The amusement park section was a fantastic surprise. There’s a great mix of rides and attractions for both kids and adults. The park is clean, spacious, and offers a lot of variety to fill the entire day. Overall, it’s 100% worth the visit, especially for families or anyone looking to do something unique over the weekend. We left with so many great memories and can’t wait to come back again. Highly recommend!
Sathvik P — Google review
We went for the Halloween special and we really enjoyed it. It wasn't too busy, and not too scary. We were able to enjoy all the rides without a wait on most occasions. Unfortunately, both rollercoasters were not operating, I dont know if this is normal for the winter months. We stayed in a safari comfort lodge, which was clean and perfect for the three of us. It was quite small, but we were only in there to sleep. The accommodation is immediately next to the park and restaurant. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet which was included in our package. We didn't have time to experience the safari park this visit. We will definitely be returning next year.
Nicol H — Google review
An interesting park with a lot of different animals. My recommendation is to go through the park in your own car instead of the bus, as it is really safe and better for seeing the animals. Touring by car takes about 2–3 hours, after which you can visit the amusement park within the same area and spend another 3–4 hours having fun—rides, winning teddy bears by throwing into baskets, food available around. There is also a place where you can feed and pet goats, sheep, and llamas, which is truly wonderful for animal lovers. Overall, a very nice experience and recommended.
Milan I — Google review
It is a really great place for a whole day family trip! The safari part is incredible, we were on our own car and haven't regretted it. You can see animals really close, they have plenty of space and look really healthy. And we loved the amusement park! Surprisingly there were almost no ques, we didn't have to wait more that 5 mins for a ride. Top place, highly recommend!
Александра К — Google review
One of the best Safari park in northern Europe ! Very large, organised, clean and must visit. The rides are also a bonus and included, if you want to cover both I recommend to start early spend 09.30 to 12.30 at the safari, have lunch and spend rest of the day at the rides. The rides are for all age groups and parking facility is quite good, so can easily walk around. There is also an indoor play area for younger kids. Overall can easily spend a full day with family having fun and good memories !
Ravindra P — Google review
We had booked the Tongasoa lodges. What they don't tell you is there is a hard deadline for check in. The reception closes at 7pm and they were available until 8pm for late check in. The keys and the room no. information are all provided only at the reception, if you come late, we aren't sure where you will need to spend the night. We were very lucky to have caught them just when they were locking up and they were kind enough to help us with our checkins after their work hours. Apart from that everything else was really nice. They rooms were nice and clean, the beds were comfortable and all amenities were functional. The breakfast the next day at Manyara restaurant was just fine. If you are a vegetarian, you will be able to get sandwich and cereals and for vegan probably just fruits and salad vegetables. Safari the next day was really fun, we went with our own cars. The animals were very close and approached the cars. I thought I read you shouldn't feed the animals, but some of the cars in front of us were feeding apples, bananas and carrots and nobody stopped them. The amusement park was also fun, it came with the safari tickets, we didn't need to pay extra.

Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Lower Saxony, is one of Europe’s largest and most popular wildlife parks, combining the immersive experience of a safari with a full-fledged leisure and amusement park. Covering over 220 hectares, it is home to more than 1,500 animals encompassing around 100 species, making it an extraordinary destination for nature lovers, families, and adventure seekers alike. Safari Experience and Animal Kingdom At the heart of Serengeti Park lies the Serengeti-Safari—an expansive 110-hectare drive-through area where visitors can witness free-roaming lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, bison, antelopes, and many other iconic African species. This safari experience can be enjoyed either in your own car or via a guided safari bus, offering close-up views of the animals in large, naturalistic habitats. This provides a thrilling, educational encounter resembling a genuine African safari, complete with the sights and sounds of wildlife in motion. Additionally, the Jungle-Safari invites guests to explore a walk-through area housing over 20 species of monkeys, including chimpanzees, gorillas, lemurs, and orangutans. This section is designed to offer an intimate and safe interaction with these fascinating primates, and features an exciting Jungle Safari tour that combines animal viewing with adventurous off-road rides and special effects. The Petting Safari area allows children and families to get hands-on with domestic animals like alpacas, donkeys, and goats, providing a more interactive experience particularly loved by young visitors. Visitors can feed and cuddle the animals, making it a fun and educational part of the visit for kids. Adventure Safari and Entertainment Beyond the animal encounters, Serengeti Park boasts the Adventure-Safari area, home to more than 40 amusement rides and attractions tailored to all ages. Roller coasters, water slides, carousels, and Ferris wheels offer excitement and thrills for adrenaline lovers, while gentler rides ensure even toddlers can join in the fun. Alongside the rides, live shows, acrobatics, music performances, and interactive events weave learning opportunities into an enjoyable entertainment program. Water World within the park provides boat tours for a relaxing family experience on serene waters, complementing the dynamic animal and adventure zones with moments of calm and beauty. Amenities and Accommodations Serengeti Park offers a range of facilities to enhance guest comfort, including themed restaurants serving African-inspired cuisine and picnic areas for families. The park is well equipped to accommodate visitors of all ages, featuring BabyPark areas for toddlers, accessible safari vehicles, and indoor play zones. Parking and public transportation options make visiting convenient. For longer stays, the Serengeti Park Resort provides lodging options such as lodges in an African-inspired setting or unique accommodations like a converted double-decker bus. The resort atmosphere allows guests to extend the safari adventure into a multi-day vacation immersed in the wilds of the park’s surroundings. Visitor Experience and Feedback Visitors consistently highlight the park’s unique blend of wildlife and amusement, praising the quality of the safari experience and the variety of activities available. The park stands out for its educational focus, with knowledgeable staff delivering engaging information about animal behavior and conservation efforts throughout the visit. Children find the hands-on and interactive elements particularly memorable, while adults appreciate the park's spacious natural habitats and commitment to animal welfare. Some visitors note that certain parts of the park, such as specific rides or facilities, show signs of wear, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive and worth the visit. The multiple themed areas inside the park ensure a diverse range of experiences, making Serengeti Park a versatile destination for family holidays, school trips, or wildlife enthusiasts.

Space of remembrance
Sights & Landmarks
Bergen-Belsen Memorial is a site that preserves the memory of the horrors of World War II, serving as a tribute to those who lost their lives during this dark period in history. It houses monuments, displays and research facilities that chronicle the experience of former POWs and those sent to concentration and displaced persons camps. The museum staff are welcoming and helpful, creating an organized space for visitors to learn about this somber part of history.
Loved the memorial. The exhibition is more extensive than we thought. We spent a solid two hours reviewing the history and personal stories. Very well done.

A lot of reading required. Very sparce, no option of a guide but it is free to enter

Inevitably a very thought provoking experience. A very detailed museum with photos, video artefacts etc. Outside it was not fully clear where to go, take the free map. Nice to see Anne Frank's memorial, her story has moved me for over 50 years
William H — Google review
Free to enter and walk around, the scale of the area is massive and you can easily spend 2-3 hours walking around. You don't truly understand the scale of the camp until you walk the grounds. Although none of the original building stand there are plenty of maps explaining certain areas dotted around the grounds. The POW cemetery is separate from the camp, roughly a 5 min walk and is now connected via a sand path that crosses the training area. All signs have an English translation and the exhibits in the museum also have English translations. There is a cafe and library on site, but I didn't visit.

Poignant and moving. Very well narrated in the stories and pictures in the museum which is new. Camp site tells the story well although it is only the foundation now as it was destroyed at the liberation due to disease concerns.

Sights & Landmarks
Celle Castle, originally built in 1292, is a Renaissance castle with medieval origins and is a must-see attraction in the city. The quadrangular building features immaculately preserved Baroque-style rooms and stunning Renaissance architecture. It also houses the oldest Baroque theater in Europe and a highly decorated chapel. Although guided tours were not available during the visit due to Covid restrictions, visitors can still admire the castle's beauty and history.
We didn't go in but sat in the gardens in front of the castle. It's nicely situated in the center of town. There was a vintage car fair when we were there and the atmosphere was really nice.
Eva G — Google review
The castle impresses with its beautiful Renaissance architecture and well-maintained interiors. Inside, the museum offers a detailed look at regional history with modern exhibition techniques and clear descriptions. Interesting fact: During World War II, Celler Schloss was used as a refuge for artworks from major museums to protect them from bombings, adding a unique historical layer to its story.

Founded by Henry the Lion in 1173 and serving as his final resting place, the cathedral boasts distinctive twin towers and holds significant historical importance in the region's religious and cultural heritage.
A beautiful place in the Center of an incredible Christmas market. An incredible Christmas experience which I would go to again and again.

We should really thankful to those people centuries ago constructed these great structures. Every inch has a history and a story and a voice. Kids should be made to learn about these buildings and the people behind it.

Braunschweig Cathedral is a truly extraordinary place that left a profound impact on me. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a bygone era, overwhelmed by the weight of history that permeates every corner of this majestic structure. The cathedral's architecture is a testament to human creativity and skill. Its soaring spires and intricate details are a sight to behold. The craftsmanship on display is nothing short of remarkable, with each delicate carving and carefully placed stone revealing the dedication and talent of the artisans who brought this architectural masterpiece to life. Every turn brought new surprises, and I found myself lost in admiration, marveling at the sheer grandeur of it all. However, the cathedral's beauty extends far beyond its physical appearance. Its walls reverberate with stories of centuries past, and the sense of timelessness is palpable. It has witnessed historical events, joyous celebrations, and solemn moments of reflection. As I learned about its rich history, I couldn't help but feel a deep reverence for the generations that came before us and the cultural heritage they left behind. Inside the cathedral, I encountered a collection of special sculptures that added an extra layer of fascination. These sculptures, meticulously crafted with exquisite detail, seemed to possess a life of their own. Their expressive forms and captivating presence drew me in, and I was captivated by the stories they told. Each one was a testament to the artistic prowess of the past, reminding me of the power of human creativity and the ability to transform stone into something truly extraordinary. In conclusion, Braunschweig Cathedral is more than just a building. It is a gateway to the past, an architectural wonder, and a repository of history and art. Visiting this remarkable cathedral is an immersive experience that will transport you to ancient times and leave you with a deep appreciation for the enduring legacy of our ancestors. Prepare to be enchanted by its timeless beauty, to marvel at its architectural splendor, and to be moved by the stories it silently whispers.

A long overdue piece , I visited this absolutely beautiful cathedral in April, it was a cloudy morning and I was incidentally in time for Ms.Monika's famed church tour (it was around 11 am ) , and boy was i was amazed. She breathed and lived the cathedral's rich history, dark times and the subsequent restoration. Her impeccable attention to detail and careful explanation bought the cathedral to life. A proficient bi -lingual (German and English) , she did an outstanding job to weave the narrative of the journey of the cathedral from past to present. The tour itself is about an hour and free , the cathedral has stood the test of time and is a testament to faith, history and changing times of the surrounding regions. The architecture (gothic- renaissance) is a splendid remainder of the rich history and cultural heritage of the city itself. The staff and local agencies involved are doing a wonderful job of preserving this splendid piece of architecture, if Braunschweig is not on your radar, give it a try, gems like these won't dissapoint you.

Brunswick Palace, also known as Braunschweiger Schloss or Braunschweiger Residenzschloss, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it served as the residence for the Dukes of Brunswick. Despite facing destruction and demolition over the years, it was rebuilt in 2007 and now houses a museum and rooftop terrace. The palace stands as a grand monument in Brunswick's schlossplatz and is admired for its stunning architecture.
It was a wonderful visit, as it is located in the city center, and it was the residence of the dukes from 1753 to November 8, 1918.. Within it is the Schloss commercial complex, which contains a wide range of shops such as clothing, food, restaurants, electronics, cosmetics, and perfumes... It is wonderful. If you visit the city of Braunschweig, do not forget to go there and take souvenir photos
Ahmad H — Google review
Stunning City Palace with a remarkable history. The old home of the Dukes of Braunschweig, the last of whom abdicated in 1918, the Schloss was destroyed twice, first by fire and then of course in the bombing raids of the Second World War. Against massive protests it was demolished in the 1960s and finally rebuilt in the 2000s to cover a shopping mall. You can easily spot the parts that came from the original Schloss. The architecture is beautiful and the site is in the centre of the city so absolutely a must visit when in Braunschweig. There’s a small museum in the left hand wing of the palace that is free, as well as the lifts to see the Quadriga at the very top that’s also free for the time being. The entrance is just to the right of the main entrance.

In Brunswick's schlossplatz stands the stunning building known as Brunswick Palace. When I passed by this majestic monument on the route to Gaussberg Park, I must admit that it was awe-inspiring. Only when I travel to the UK do I see monuments like this. According to what I was told, this palace was constructed sometime in the 18th century and underwent a number of renovations over its existence. I have heard that it once served as a residence for the Brunswick dukes in the 18th century. Wonderful to pass past this building.

Architectural Buildings
Rathaus Goslar, also known as the City Hall, is a stunning 15th-century Gothic building with gabled arches and Gothic windows. While it may seem simple from the outside, its interior holds a true treasure. The Huldigungsaal, or Chamber of Allegiance, features remarkable Renaissance artwork by an unknown artist. At night, the Rathaus is particularly beautiful when illuminated by light shining through its stained-glass windows.
Goslar's Marktplatz is home to the Town Hall, which has been in use since the mid-15th century. However, the 16th century is decisive, when the arcades were added to the market side. The showpiece of the town hall is the Tribute Hall, a unique jewel of late Gothic interior design that was fitted out as a council chamber between 1505 and 1520.

I took the tour at 11:30. It cost 8 euro. The guide was kind and knowledgeable. Provided the tour is only in german language it would be better to have at least some materials or information tables in English. The beautifully painted Homage room can be only seen through a plexiglass box which is not very good for a pic. I dont understand why they just didn t put some rope instead which would allow visitors to take a nice pic and still they would not step inside. Also as previous review mentioned I dont understand why they destroyed the ossuary!! Such a shame. It was shown to us on the picture. I really think it should have been left as it was. We also have ossuary in Kutna Hora and there are hundred thousands skulls and bones under Paris etc. Its just part of the history. The hall with starry ceiling was lovely and nice how every vitrage window had a story depicted on it.

I would recommend you guys to go and enjoy the beautiful place. I liked it.

Beautiful nature park with easy mountain peaks, stunning views and scenery. Expect some gravel paths, a few bicycle paths and lots of elephant paths. Make sure to check out the highest peaks around and go for the boulders at the end to fully enjoy the highlights this area has to offer. You're able to fly your drone here as well. Few camp grounds around, so you're able to plan your multiple day hiking trip around those.

I have to admit I didn’t make it all the way to the top. After being packed in the back of an open train car for an hour, I got off and took a train back down the mountain. The 96 euro cost for two adults is an insane price to pay for no seat assignment. The regional trains are very nice, affordable, not packed, and air conditioned. Wernigerode Castle is a magnificent structure built on medieval foundations and completed in the 19th century. The SchlossbrIocke, or Castle Bridge, is a popular attraction with its vibrant turrets and towers. In addition to the castle, tourists can explore other key spots in Wernigerode such as the Market Square, Old Town, Town Hall, and Cathedral of St. Mary.
Beautiful place, very nice panoramic view from the castle hill, nice park around. The small town is very historical and pretty. A lot of restaurants, hotels, and shops. Nice to come with your family and friends to walk around and enjoy the historical architecture. Beautiful place!

Beautiful castle with spectacular views of Wernigerode and Harz mountains. Very busy during my visit & somewhat disorganized. Could only find paid parking nearby with additional expense for a shuttle bus. However, there are several shuttle bus companies and you can't tell which is which until the driver kicks you off. But, still a nice place to visit.

Beautiful beautiful castle! Absolutely worth the visit. It has such a special atmosphere. There’s not much to see inside, but the view of the city from the top and inside courtyard are stunning. We were there on Sunday, end September, and there was no line.

Not allowed to take pictures inside, so I cannot post inside pics here. But it is incredible! The most beautiful woodwork, stunning small church, great to have a local beer in the courtyard. Worth the visit!!
Daan W — Google review
A must-visit when you're in Wernigerode! Wernigerode Castle is straight out of a fairytale — perched on a hill with breathtaking views over the charming town and the Harz mountains. The architecture is stunning, and the atmosphere feels like stepping into another century. Now, let me say this loud and clear: take the uphill walk to the castle if you can! Sure, there are shuttle buses and other ways to get there, but where’s the adventure in that? 😄 Brace your leg muscles and lungs — the incline is real! 🥵 But trust me, it’s the most rewarding option. It adds a touch of effort, a dash of cardio, and a full dose of “I earned this view!” Once you reach the top, all the huffing and puffing pays off. The castle is beautiful, the views are spectacular, and the photo ops are endless. Whether you're into history, architecture, or just soaking in amazing scenery — this place has it all. Pro tip: Go early or late in the day to avoid crowds and heat. Bring water, good shoes, and a bit of adventurous spirit!

Nestled in the heart of Magdeburg, the Green Citadel stands as a testament to the visionary creativity of Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This whimsical building, located just a short stroll from key landmarks like the state parliament and Cathedral Square, showcases Hundertwasser's signature style both inside and out. Visitors can explore its vibrant courtyards, dine at delightful restaurants or cafes, and browse through various shops.
A nice building complex with a couple of restaurants inside. There are more than two entrances and they sell crazy good ice cream 🙂
Sofía G — Google review
A truly unique architectural gem in Magdeburg, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 2005, shortly after his death. The building breaks away from conventional architecture with its irregular forms and rooftop gardens. While visually striking, the interior spaces—especially the shops and hotel—could benefit from more curated content that reflects Hundertwasser’s philosophy. In many ways, it feels like a cousin to Gaudí’s works in Barcelona, though on a much smaller and more commercial scale.
Mousa M — Google review
It’s a very special building, several shops, cofe shop on the first floor. If you want to go to the top, have to buy ticket at information place and people bring you inside every hour. We don’t have time this trip, but only the ground floor, very interesting shops a lot!

Magdeburg Cathedral

Mentioned on

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Magdeburg Cathedral, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany, is a must-see landmark in the charming city of Magdeburg. The Protestant place of worship was completed in 1520 and boasts a stunning late Romanesque-Gothic style with Renaissance sculptures and carvings. It defines the city's skyline and houses a vast collection of paintings and sculptures from different eras.
The Magdeburg Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice, is a true gem of Gothic architecture and one of the most remarkable landmarks in eastern Germany. Rising majestically in the heart of Magdeburg, its soaring towers and detailed stonework make it an unforgettable sight even from a distance. But beyond its architectural brilliance lies a serene and deeply spiritual atmosphere that captivates all who enter. Walking through its grand doors, you’re immediately surrounded by silence and awe. The vast interior, with its high vaulted ceilings, towering columns, and colorful stained-glass windows, creates a sense of reverence and peace. Light streams softly through the windows, painting the ancient stone with hues of red, blue, and gold. The silence is not empty, but full a space where one can reflect, pray, or simply breathe in the beauty of the sacred. The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a historical monument. It holds the tomb of Emperor Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, adding a layer of imperial history to its spiritual depth. Each sculpture, altar, and corner tells a story, connecting visitors to centuries of faith, art, and culture. Outside, the cathedral’s grounds offer equally peaceful surroundings, perfect for a quiet stroll or a moment of contemplation. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or an appreciation for art and architecture, the Magdeburg Cathedral offers a soul stirring experience. It stands as a reminder of the power of human creativity and spiritual devotion, a place where past and present, heaven and earth, beautifully meet.

Pretty church, the time we come in just has people speech, and then the organ play music. This area rear has Asia people, they speak Germany for sure, so I can’t really understand inside cultural relics. Magdeburg is a charming city with a rich history and a pleasant atmosphere for visitors. Known for its impressive Gothic Magdeburg Cathedral (Dom zu Magdeburg), it’s a must-visit for anyone interested in architecture and history. The Elbe River adds a serene vibe to the city, perfect for riverside walks. The city combines medieval charm with modern amenities, offering great parks like the Elbauenpark and cultural sites such as the Jahrtausendturm. It’s not too crowded, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful yet enriching experience in Germany.
Rodrigo M — Google review
No tickets for entering but if you want to take photo there is a 2 euro fee.
Marcin B — Google review
If you’re a history fan, you’re going to love this place. The stories about the history of the cathedral itself and King Otto are interesting. But for those who are more amazed by architectures, not really a bucket-list material. But I guess you’ll drop by because this is the no.1 sightseeing spot in Magdeburg. Oh by the way, it’s two euros to take photos inside. I would consider this as a donation to maintain this robust structure. Enjoy!
Ji L — Google review
Gorgeous. A fun fact: The Magdeburger Dom is the oldest gothic cathedral in all of Germany!!! The people here are incredibly kind. And the outside is just as beautiful as the inside. I highly recommend taking some time to walk in a circle around the entire complex; you will thank me later!!! :)

The place is really good. There are two nearby houses on which vines and Ivy has grown which looks really amazing. The Elbe river is just 100 meter's from this Cathedral. One can walk along the bank of the Elbe river too. There are many nearby good restaurants too and the tram station is near too. One can reach the Cathedral within 10 minutes from the nearest tram station.

One half-timbered house follows the next, and at times, you truly feel like you're walking through the Middle Ages. Many alleyways are tucked away with small shops, restaurants, and pubs. Depending on the time of year, it's naturally very busy, but the old town is absolutely worth a visit. The climb to the castle hill is also worthwhile, as it offers a magnificent view of the old town. (Original) Die Altstadt sorgt dafür, dass Quedlinburg zurecht Welterbe ist. Bauhaus Dessau

Mentioned on
6 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Foundation
Bauhaus Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926, is a highly influential building that showcases the hallmarks of Bauhaus design. The glass facade and absence of visible supporting elements on the corners are iconic features. The Cafe-Bistro continues the tradition of being a meeting place for program participants, employees, and friends. This architectural masterpiece still looks fresh and contemporary despite being almost a century old.
I love this place. This place answered me plenty of questions about the why, the where, the what, the who and the when. It is great to learn about the motivations, learn about the who were these people, to learn about the where and when have the gone after Dessau. I have spent two days and three guided tours and I will for sure come again.

A Masterpiece of Vision: A Review of the Bauhaus Dessau My recent visit to the Bauhaus building in Dessau, Germany, was more than just a tour; it was a journey into a living monument of architectural and educational history. The experience profoundly illustrated the singular vision of one man, Walter Gropius, who, against incredible odds, brought the modern art and design movement to life. It is nothing short of astonishing to consider how he single-handedly managed to fund, design, and create the entire institutional framework, all while navigating the tumultuous political landscape between the two world wars. The moment you step into the building, you are immediately struck by its revolutionary design. The famous staircase, the sun-drenched workshops, and the seamless integration of various functions speak to Gropius's genius. I was particularly moved by visiting his personal office, located in the bridge connecting the two main buildings. This space, a hub of creativity and leadership, felt like the very heart of the movement. Seeing the workshops where masters and students collaborated, and the student hostel where they lived and breathed art, brought the curriculum to life. The building is a manifesto in itself, a physical embodiment of Gropius’s belief in the unity of art and technology. The self-sufficiency of the institution is a testament to Gropius's strategic mind. He devised a curriculum that drew students from around the world, creating a vibrant, international community. He hand-picked a legendary faculty, including Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, and created a marketing machine to attract global talent. This was all done while facing immense political pressure and shifting ideologies, which ultimately led to the school's closure. Despite these challenges, Gropius’s unwavering commitment ensured that the Bauhaus's influence would endure. The tour is incredibly well-curated, and I highly recommend taking it to truly appreciate the scale of this achievement. The theater, the student cafeteria, and even the gift shop—which is filled with beautiful designs—all contribute to an experience that is both educational and deeply inspiring. For anyone with an interest in art, architecture, or history, the Bauhaus Dessau is a must-see. It's a powerful reminder that with clear vision and relentless determination, one person can shape the course of history.

Amazing! This place was a world leader and is symbollic and of the modern movement in architecture and design in Europe in the 1900s. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. It has been restored, true to the original design after being closed by the racist regime of the 1930s. Well worth the visit for architects and designers.
Paul E — Google review
Must-see for those interested in modernism and architecture as a whole. You can roam a part of the building freely. However, all classrooms and the entire student flats block are sadly inaccessible for visitors (except if you book a night in a flat!). The shop has a great selection of souvenirs. The workers were warm and friendly.

The ticket for Bauhaus+Museum+Master's Houses is 27€ and it's completely worth it. The place is amazing, and the temporary exhibitions are always really good. Will visit again!

This is a simply fabulous historic building. Once the home of the revolutionary Bauhaus School and designed by Walter Gropius it stands as a memorial to an innovative school that only survived from 1919-1933 but had a huge impact on architecture and design across the whole world.

This place, showcasing the architecture and arts of legends, can inspire you for years. Revisiting this historical place that changed the world evokes an amazing feeling.
Milan P — Google review
Mmmmm I love the bahhaus movement and the art from that time, but the institute itself doesnt do much for me. The exhibitions inside are about the history of the buildin; its beginnings, its time during nazi rule, its reconstruction, and its preservation. Another one focused on the design of one of the bauhaus styled lights. Both were interesting but I was hoping to simply see more bauhaus art (go to the museum for that). The structure itself, while iconic, didnt do much for me either. I think when it was built, it would have been revolutionary. I did love seeing the bauhaus styled lamps irl though :)

Gartenreich Dessau Wörlitz

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks

Beatiful place for a long walk. Nice architecture combined with nature. To go all around you need to reserve at least 3-4 hours.

Panels with maps of the garden and open toilets would be required. Maybe a bridge over the lake from the info center (joking on this one, but access is difficult). The gardens are beautiful in any season.
SVC — Google review
I had the pleasure of visiting the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz twice—first in the cold spring, and most recently on a sunny Sunday this July. Each visit offered a completely different atmosphere, revealing new layers of beauty and charm. My first impression of the park in spring was nothing short of magical. There were fewer people, which made it easy to get lost in the serenity. Coming back this summer, I expected a livelier experience—and it absolutely delivered. The park was in full bloom, vibrant and lush. Flowers framed every pathway, and the canals sparkled under the sun. There were more visitors and some couples on gondola rides. I loved how alive everything felt, but not overcrowded. Wildlife was more present too: birdsong, dragonflies, and even a stork sighting! Both visits were unique and rewarding in their own ways. Spring is perfect for peaceful, introspective walks, while summer is ideal for soaking in the full vibrancy of the landscape and enjoying the social, cultural side of the park. The Gartenreich truly lives up to its name—a garden kingdom where nature, history, and beauty meet across seasons.

Amazing place! Even if its raining:) A trip for everyone, with children, dog. To walk around the lake it can take from 1 hour up to a few hours (depending on how long will you stay at each view point, if you visit the island by ferry etc.) You can shorten the trip taking a ferry (cost for adult 1 EUR, child 0.5 EUR).

Museums
The State Museum of Prehistory Halle (Saale) is a renowned archaeological museum in Central Europe, showcasing important prehistoric and medieval artifacts. It features a remarkable permanent exhibition that spans from the Stone Age to the early Iron Age, offering a chronological journey through Saxony-Anhalt's archaeological discoveries. The museum's centerpiece is the famous Nebra Sky Disk, a UNESCO Memory of the World document that provides insights into ancient astronomical knowledge.
For €7 entrance and €3 for audio guide this was fantastic value for money. There is the adults audio and the children's audio so all educated about our prehistory. Great cafe on ground floor. You can take pictures but no flash.

Museum about the prehistory of the region. The main focus is the Nebra solar disk. But it has a lot of other very interesting prehistoric pieces. If you are in Halle (Saale) Go visit this museum.
Haitse W — Google review
Absolutely wonderful artefacts BUT!!! All text is in german so we foreigners are kept out. No brochure for the different floors. This could be easily helped by asking a highschool class to translate all the information on each floor to english and then have them set a QR code next to each text. I am so intreaged by all this interesting history but feel cheated since my german is not good enough to understand the information in german. I asked if they had audial information in english but- no. Why?
Karin W — Google review
The museum is very modern with great atmosphere, exhibits and stories. The price is small. The panels are mostly in English for mid sized displays, with some English for overview info only.
SVC — Google review
Such an interesting and well-curated exhibition - you can spend several hours here. The only negative was that several staff members were rather unfriendly, especially in the Café and gift shop.
N M — Google review
Wonderful museum that is packed with unique artefacts mainly from the prehistoric periods (although later periods are also covered). For prehistorians, it is a paradise place! The Nebra sky disc is of course amazing, but I'd say I enjoyed even more some of the other exhibits, eg. the Shamanin's room and the early figurines. Thank you for providing at least the main information in English, it would be nice if more of the information was translated!
Ethan — Google review
We been thrilled by this beautiful museum and the way how history and science is presented! This is one of the top museums and I can highly recommend to take some time and enjoy. We been there for 6h and easily could stay for 2 more.
Steffen W — Google review
Great experience. A typical traditional museum where the visitor is a passive observer. The only thing personal in Museum have to think about is the fact that some visitors are not German speakers and that it would be great to put English language notes under the exhibits. Suggestion for the first time visitors: start with top flour of the Museum.

Nebra Ark - Experiencing the Sky Disc

Museum
Sights & Landmarks
Striking, contemporary visitor center with bronze-age astronomy exhibits, plus digital planetarium.
Great level of comprehensive detail and cool souvenirs. One gripe is that there’s literally no one who speaks English, though there is an audio guide that covers the highlights. Staff are friendly and helpful.
A — Google review
Arche Nebra exhibition about the discovery of the 'Himmelsscheibe' or Sky Disc. Has recently been updated and upgraded. Family ticket €23 - 2 adults and 2 children (7 / 8). Spent about 2 hours here including VR experience and planetarium. Audio guides available for the main exhibition, but since a recent upgrade to the planetarium, not available in other languages, so would wait until they have sorted this out if your first language is not German. Check on the website or contact in advance to find out. Some interactive elements for children. Would be good to have a craft area to make the sky disc. Would be good to have a treasure hunt for younger children. Happy to support this if required. There was a colouring book on a table downstairs, but it was not yet available for purchase. The children's book was a bit difficult language-wise and the simple language book more for adults. This is a great place to visit and when the language guides are fully up and running for the planetarium part, then can recommend for all visitors from around the world. It is a bit out of the way, but easily located with a free car park at the foot of the hill. Disabled people and those with low mobility can be driven to the entrance. Only steps are down into the planetarium seating area, but possibly enough space for a wheelchair to remain at the back. Lift to toilets and all floors. Cafe closed Mondays and Fridays.

nice place too visit good walking an 🚵‍♀️
Michael A — Google review
Waste of time and money, with one good thing. Modern history of the Disc starts with robbery, and they do keep up the tradition! The entrance is 9,50 euros, on top of time and money spent to get to the place, which is in middle of nowhere. The Disc itself is in Prehistory Museum in Halle (at 10 euros MUCH more worth it), so if you want to see the actual thing don't bother to go to Nebra. If you don't speak German, don't go either - they are so unprepared for foreign visitors it's ridiculous. I did get an English audioguide, after being talked to in German despite my protestations in three languages that I don't speak it. The English version has a fraction of information a German speaking person would get (about 1/6, judging by info about other bronze age artifacts found on site). The info you do get is oversimplified. There isn't a single word of written English in entire place. The only good thing is that one can handle a replica of the disc. The replica doesn't look much like original, but it's a relatively minor drawback for the site.
Monika Z — Google review
Expensive, small, bad organized, only in german. There are so much interesting about the sky-disk - and this museum does not tell anything. And long walk from parking to location.
Christian E — Google review
Very interesting exhibition. Building and location, as well as the story behind the sky disc are really amazing. For English explanations you can get headphones. Descriptions in other languages would be better though.

What a beautiful place to visit. We went there in July. It was absolutely stunning to see all the flowers blooming around and walking around.

Unusual cathedral with two choirs and some intriguing features from as late as the 1980s. I'd recommend getting an audio guide (included with the tickets) in order to appreciate the many details, though in English at least, it is a bit pompous (hence the 4 stars). There are some fantastic gargoyles visible from the garden.

Extremely rich architecture. We had the privilege of a one hour guided tour and learned a lot about the history of the dome, the unusual case of the founder figures, the narrow path to paradise, why you say "Buch aufschlagen" (to "beat open a book") in German for opening a book and many more details to understand what was going on for centuries behind these walls. An absolute must visit.

A very interesting church with an interesting history. The art in the church is unique and striking. The cathedral itself is worth a day trip to see this beautifully preserved 1,000 year old World Heritage Site. Sadly, the cathedral is about the only thing worth seeing in Naumburg. We were there on a Saturday and the town rolls up the sidewalk at noon except for a few cafes near the cathedral.

Zoo Leipzig is a top destination in Germany, offering an immersive experience for visitors to observe 850 different animal species in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments. From watching elephants swim through an underwater glass wall to encountering black howler monkeys and playful penguins, the zoo provides a diverse range of experiences. Visitors can also explore themed areas such as the tropical Gondwanaland, home to Germany's only Komodo Dragon, and the unique Pongoland featuring various primate species.
Leipzig Zoo is hands down the best zoo I’ve ever been to – just go! The area is massive and beautifully designed, with tons of space to explore. The animals are surprisingly close, and there’s an amazing variety – I saw species I’d never even heard of before. There are plenty of spots to grab food or a drink along the way, which makes the whole visit super chill. The highlight for me was the tropical hall *Gondwanaland* – a huge indoor rainforest with its own climate. It’s seriously impressive and makes the whole experience feel really unique.

This Is the most amazing zoo I've ever been to. It's so big with the kids. We could only see a portion of it, but the jungle experience especially with the boat ride was so cool. Leipzig Zoo is one of the best zoos I‘ve ever visited. Large enclosures. Many events throughout the day. Amazing infrastructure (you can find maps, sign posts, and directions for a tour that leads you through the entire zoo everywhere). They also don’t solely focus on the animals as mere entertainment but seek to inform kids in playful ways about preservation/biology/even physics in the aquarium. Leipzig Zoo also provides a variety of restaurants and snack bars that are evenly distributed across the entire Zoo. I wholly recommend visiting, whether alone or with friends and family. It’s an amazing and informative experience!

Best zoo in Germany especially with huge greenhouse of tropical forest and self moving boats along river with warm climate. Highly recommended for both adults and children alike
Rony W — Google review
This zoo park was fantastic. I would recommend this to everyone. There is so much to see and you should have water with you because food and water prices there is too expensive. WC is free which is very good. And I suggest you guys to go early there, zoo opens at 9 am and closes at 7pm. As I mentioned earlier there is lot to see so you probably will need some rest. And one good thing about this zoo park is that you see animals without any borders and it is kind of crazy but it is safe. So enjoy with your trip everyone.

St. Thomas Church is a Gothic church in Leipzig, Germany, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor for 27 years and conducted the famous St. Thomas Choir. The church has a rich musical history, with notable figures such as Richard Wagner, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, and Clara Schumann leaving their mark on its legacy. Construction of the church began in 1212 and it has undergone several renovations over the years.
As the church bells rang slowly, I looked up at the silhouette of St. Thomas Church and truly felt that I was in the city of music, Leipzig. Listening to Bach’s music in a place so deeply connected to his life felt like stepping into a time machine. I visited last year and again this year, and each time, the experience brought new meaning and a deep sense of resonance. If you also visit the Bach Museum right next door, it will enrich your understanding of both the music and the man behind it. Located right in the city center, the church is easy to reach, and there are plenty of inviting spots nearby to explore and relax.

Seeing Bach's church was the reason we came to Germany and it didn't disappoint, at least according to my Bachophile son. It was easy to buy tickets at the door and you could easily see the whole thing in 30 minutes. But very contemplative and it's fun to imagine history's greatest composer walking those same steps. I'd recommend bringing some headsets and Bach albums (although the museum next door had ample samples) as it was silent when we were there. There's a few interesting artifacts from Bach.

St. Nicholas Church is an important architectural monument with interiors influenced by French classicism and distinctive palm-shaped columns. The church played a significant role in the events of 1989 in Leipzig, which led to the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. Following the reunification of Germany, Leipzig experienced economic challenges but has since undergone significant revitalization, including the restoration of historical buildings and the development of new industries and modern infrastructure.
Small church but very beautiful. Specially the ceilings. There was Christmas market when we visited.

Very pretty church inside, and amazing cold-war era history to it. In fact I think one of the Stasi has been working in the Church since the wall came down judging by his manner when I visited a few weeks ago. OK so I was taking a photo (apologies as I never realised that taking a picture of a building that is dedicated to a make-believe figure is disrespectful, and I don't remember seeing Thou Shalt Not Take Pictures In My Holy Buildings in the commandments when Charlton Heston brought them forth from high upon a Hollywood hill somewhere), but this guy was just plain self righteous and rude. Be polite, and treat us mere mortal sinners as human beings. We make mistakes so why not forgive us our trespasses. Hmmm....where have I heard that phrase before?

If you're visiting Leipzig, St. Nicholas Church is an absolute must-see. While it's historically and religiously significant, it's also an incredibly meaningful place in the history of music—making it especially memorable for those who love music and the arts. I’ve visited two years in a row to attend performances during the Bach Festival, and each time was a rich and unique experience thanks to the world-class music and the special atmosphere that only this venue can offer. Located right in the city center, the church is easily accessible and surrounded by plenty of other attractions and dining options within walking distance.

OK, I must confess that this is a place with a very specific focus (JS Bach) and purpose (to draw us into the life and music of Bach) - and I happen to be a Bach junkie. Having said that, it is a beautiful church and the Friday/Sunday concerts are excellent (and packed). It is helpful to realize, however, that everything is in German, and that Leipzigers are not as proficient in English as others in Europe.

While it feels strange to “rate” a church, I choose to do so in order to help maintain awareness of the importance of this church both as a place of worship and with its important place in music history. This is, after all, the church where Johan Sebastian Bach’s masterpiece, the St. John Passion, was first performed. During his many years of tenure in charge of the liturgical music for all of Leipzig’s churches at the time, Bach would have performed, directed the choir and written music for this church on numerous occasions.

It’s a highly historical place for the German reunification. It’s the place where protests were located and German people in the GDR gathered to stand up against the socialist regime. It’s a must see when in Leipzig! It’s free to visit but 3 Euro for pictures. It’s wonderfully renovated and colourful. Sometimes you even have the possibility to listen to concerts.

Beautiful church, which is best known for the weekly peace prayers that started during the Cold War and continue to this day. There is a small exhibition about this prayer movement.

It was a lovely experience but given the high price, you would expect that other people would practice a certain etiquette that’s expected. Five people during the 45-minute show were talking loudly and the person behind us was snoring. I think the staff should make sure that these (very basic) guidelines should be followed and respected.

It was a great presentation on Aurora, and some space explanations, I appreciate it being in the beautiful upscale city of Jena.

Watched a special short-movie screening about microbes around us. Loved the dome effect and surround sound as well. A cool science place to go for fun learning.

The show itself was very good. If they'd remove the spider webs in front of the digital projectors, the images would be more crisp. The lady conducting the show is an unfriendly dragon. She invites you to ask questions at the beginning of the show which she will "gladly" answer, but in reality she is annoyed and grumpy. Asked about the difference between their planetarium and the peanut-shaped ones she just disses you because you don't know the difference between small and big domes. Asked whether their planetarium can display shifts in constellations over the millennia, rather than explaining that cosmic timescales are much larger, she just says nothing happens in 10.000 years and it's no problem for their device. Not helpful if you are interested in the technology and otherwise have no idea of cosmology. In summary, great show but bad service.

The Planetarium is essentially a huge dome-shaped cinema, but an amazing one at that. The oldest planetarium in the world, its dome reaches 14m providing a spectacular opportunity to see the world from every angle. Programmes are split into different categories - educational, family and music, which enables a wider variety of visitors to experience the planetarium cinema. There is a small exhibition around the outside of the cinema and a very small shop selling lots of space-themed merchandise as well as coffee whilst you wait. There is a restaurant on site, however the planetarium could do with a wider exhibition space to enable people to learn more about the technology used and the history of the planetarium.

The show was very interesting. (In German only) During the Covid times they really care about your safety. You need to book tickets in advance, and a few seats are left empty between the groups of visitors. The selection of the buffet could be improved.

I went to see “Space Tour” and it felt like staring at Windows’ screensavers for an hour. There were very few and poor explanations written (they don’t even bother to have someone talking), some of the images didn’t even have anything to do with space (like fireworks or random explosions). There was no storyline and very little science. Very disappointing considering it’s the oldest planetarium in the world.

JenTower, a 144.5-meter-high office tower in Jena, was built in the early 1970s as a research facility for VEB Carl Zeiss Jena. Designed by Hermann Henselmann, it stands as a modern landmark with its characteristic glass facade and an observation deck offering stunning city views at 128 meters high. The cylindrical tower's design alludes to an upright telescope, symbolizing Jena's optical industries.
Visiting the top of the JenTower is definitely worth it! We purchased a 20 euro coupon that paid for a cappuccino and cake at the restaurant located on the top. It was very tasty. The views were amazing and not too busy.

Nice view of the city, worth a few euros (6 per person) for entrance. The elevator gets you up in no time!
Niels G — Google review
A great place to take a look at Jena from above. Take the elevator to the 26the floor and change there for another one taking you to the 29th floor where you will find the observation platform and a very good restaurant.
Sebastian R — Google review
Great view from the tower, worth taking time day and night! Plus, this is possibly the only spot in Jena where you don't see the tower... worth appreciation indeed 😃 Be ready for wind, it's much stronger than at the foot of the tower. Take an extra jacket.
Monika C — Google review
We had a spectacular dinner in the JenTower. An elevator takes you to floor 27 and from there another elevator takes you to floor 29. The view is very nice. The food is modern and visually appealing. The quality can be described as good. The design inside is very modern, but unfortunately a little dark. A good place for a relaxing evening with friends.

Jena Tower costs €6 and is a must for anyone visiting Jena. Elevators take you up to the 27th floor in a matter of seconds and then the observation deck is on the 28th floor (another lift). The views from the top of the tower are simply spectacular with observation points around the whole tower. Remember a coat and hat! It is quite windy up there. Would be useful to have metal plaques at the top to point out landmarks, as the paper version just flew around all over the place!

Tallest skyscraper in Eastern Germany (I assume outside of Berlin). Went to the viewing platform on the 28th floor which gives views of the entire city and valley. Great to have it, especially in summer with everything so green. 6 eur to visit. No dogs. No wait.

Built in 1970, JenTower is in the list of the tallest buildings in Germany. It is always in sight when you roam around Jena. You can take an elevator and go up for 6€. The view is amazing, seeing all sides of the city. Additionally, you have chance to have a breakfast or meal there at the Tower. Personally, prices are moderate.

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations is a 91-meter-high memorial in Leipzig, commemorating the 1813 battle where Napoleon was defeated. It features a viewing platform and a history museum. Leipzig offers diverse attractions such as the Leipzig Book Fair, Bach Festival, cultural events, green spaces like the Riverside Forest and botanical gardens, and landmarks including the Bach Museum and St. Nicholas Church.
The Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is an absolute must-see in Leipzig. Towering at 91 meters, it commemorates the historic 1813 Battle of Leipzig, one of the largest conflicts in European history, where Napoleon’s army was decisively defeated. This striking monument is not only a symbol of resistance and unity but also a masterpiece of early 20th-century architecture. Surrounded by a tranquil reflecting pool and parkland, the monument offers an awe-inspiring exterior and an equally impressive interior. Visitors can ascend to the top for panoramic views of Leipzig and explore the solemn halls, giant warrior statues, and crypt-like chambers that leave a lasting emotional impact. Its grand scale, peaceful atmosphere, and deep historical significance make it one of the most important landmarks in the city. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply a curious traveler, this site offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Clean, well-maintained, and accessible, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal is more than just a monument—it’s a place of memory, reflection, and beauty. If you're visiting Leipzig, this iconic site belongs at the top of your list.

At the entrance, a welcoming entrance with an airy crypt with heating. On the first floor there was a film that explains the entire history from the origins in the early 1800s to the present day. Viewing is recommended. Then you climb up to the first internal cornice, which is very overhanging. You then climb to the upper floors, and then you reach the first external cornice located under the feet of the statues that can be seen from outside. You can take the elevator up to that level. From there, you climb to the highest part of the building with a very narrow but well-made stone staircase. A visit is recommended to better understand the history of the city. Full adult ticket price €12

A stunning monument that witnessed through its history empires, kingdoms and republics coming and going…. A must see by everyone who loves history! Fabulous views to the city as well as relaxing beautiful park!

Great experience with a rich history. I chose a non audio self tour and would highly recommend this. It's a place of reflection and would rather go undisturbed. The staircase to the top is steep though. Just so you know 😉

If you had only one thing to do in Leipzig, please visit this place. This monument is the tallest in all of Europe and it commemorates the war that broke Napoleon. No tickets required

This intense and impressive monument is a MUST SEE if you are in Leipzig. The scale is stunning and is reminiscent of the Mines of Moria in Lord of the Rings. There are multiple lifts but if you want to get to the top viewing area, you have to use the stairs and it is a little walk. No bad, but most people emerged a little winded and sweaty. The sweeping views of Leipzig are great and, if you go on a sunny day, you can see many miles/kilometers in every direction. Highly recommended.

A really impressive monument. It really makes you feel the enormity of the event being memorialized much like the World War I monument in Kansas City. There was a feeling of heaviness about the monument and it made me feel retrospective. A very nice visit. A stroll through the cemetery nextdoor is also warranted.

the monument to the battle of the nations in leipzig is a massive, seriously impressive monument commemorating napoleon's defeat in the 1813 battle. it's one of europe's largest, and you can climb to the top for panoramic views of leipzig. inside, the huge stone figures are really powerful. it's a bit outside the city center but easily reached by tram and definitely worth a visit for its history and scale
