Gosudarstvennyy Memorial'nyy I Prirodnyy Muzey-Zapovednik I.s. Turgeneva "Spasskoye-Lutovinovo"

Museums
The Gosudarstvennyy Memorial'nyy I Prirodnyy Muzey-Zapovednik I.s. Turgeneva "Spasskoye-Lutovinovo" is a historical and natural reserve museum complex located in the Oryol region, about 60 kilometers from Oryol and 12 kilometers from Mtsensk.
(Translated by Google) On December 3, 2024, a wonderful excursion to the I.S. Museum-Reserve was held for the team of the Amchanochka Volunteer Group, which helps soldiers of the Northern Military District. Turgenev Spasskoye - Lutovinovo. To say that we enjoyed the excursion is an understatement! It was a wonderful excursion! It would seem that we know a lot about Spassky and Turgenev, since we are his fellow countrymen. But they listened as if for the first time! We felt that the museum staff truly valued what they were talking about. They are the true guardians of the history of this unique reserve and bearers of its richest traditions, cultural and natural values. No modern methods of storing information can replace the special atmosphere of communication in which people who find themselves within the walls of the Turgenev House, in the famous park of the estate, are immersed. We involuntarily remembered the words of the great countryman: “When you are in Spassky, bow from me to the house, the garden, my young oak tree, bow to the homeland...”. And we bowed... “Amchanochka” cordially thanks the administration of the Spasskoye-Lutovinovo Museum-Reserve: director Sergei Afanasyevich Stupin and deputy director Tatyana Aleksandrovna Basova, as well as Yuri Ivanovich Zuev, Victoria Eduardovna Gubanova, for providing the opportunity for our group to visit the family estate of I.S. Turgenev. I would also like to note that the excursion conducted by museum employees Alexei Gennadievich Merkulov and Elena Leonidovna Selivanova is an amazing opportunity to touch the literary shrine of the Mtsensk land. With such professionals, time flew by instantly, we learned a lot of new and interesting things. We wish the museum staff good health, prosperity, new creative victories and success in such an important and worthy cause!

(Translated by Google) A wonderful place, first of all, it is a large, well-kept old park. But, probably, the only original exhibit of the museum is the famous Turgenev oak. The estate itself was on fire and was being rebuilt. According to the guide, only the outbuilding remained. The estate is painted in bright colors. Turgenev rarely visited the estate; he preferred Paris. The museum itself has a good European-quality renovation; there are several original pieces of furniture from the Turgenev family. Is photography prohibited inside the museum?! although there is nothing special to shoot. Very beautiful Church of the Transfiguration. Be sure to visit it.

(Translated by Google) Spasskoye-Lutovinovo... How can you not write stories here!? Silence, tranquility, centuries-old trees, an oak tree planted by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, Savina pond... If you are lucky enough to visit the estate, book a comprehensive excursion, it lasts a little more than two hours and costs a penny (380 or 500 rubles, depending on the exposition). It’s better in the summer, a walk through the park takes up the main part of the excursion and be sure to take a ride through the park with a cab driver, it costs only 150 rubles!!!. Unfortunately, the manor house is closed for two years for restoration, but this does not spoil the overall picture. Be sure to take a walk through the village, at the other end there is a little chapel, the history of which will be told to you by the guide in the estate itself, if you ask him about it. Well, and ... "bow to my young man, bow to my homeland..." three to five hours will be enough to visit the estate, there is no hotel in Spassky, there are no restaurants either, 10 km away is the ancient city of Mtsensk on the Zusha River, you can have a snack there before returning home and ... visits to Tolstoy in Yasnaya Polyana, which is on the way to Moscow.

(Translated by Google) It is necessary to take a tour, because there is no other way to get to the house-museum. Some interesting details from the guide. It was a routine in the house that at a certain time everyone would go downstairs to the dining room to eat. It was believed that those staying in the house remained in the status of a guest for 3 days, and they were given concessions - they were fed when they were hungry. On the 4th day, those living were considered members of the household and could no longer claim lunch/dinner at an unspecified time. Many of Turgenev’s friends visited the house - Nekrasov, Fet, and Leo Tolstoy especially loved the estate. Turgenev himself also loved the family nest very much, and in his letters to Flaubert he often described the estate. In general, 5 of the writer’s 6 novels were written here. In the office there is a very beautiful Byzantine image of the Savior. Despite the fact that Turgenev was not a believer, he ordered that the image not be removed from the estate. Unfortunately, out of 20 thousand exhibits, only 5 thousand remain, the rest were lost. The original books are exhibited in the Turgenev house-museum in Orel. On the territory of the estate there is the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, consecrated in 1809, as well as a chapel where the ashes of the founder of the estate are buried. I.S. Turgenev came to Spasskoye-Lutovinovo for the last time in 1881. In the spring of 1882 he became very ill, and on September 3 he died of spinal cancer. In the park on the territory there is an oak tree that Turgenev planted with his own hands in his youth. It is now one of the tallest and widest-girth trees on the entire estate. The oak is about 200 years old. The park itself occupies 40 hectares, mixed, the alleys are linden, lined with the Roman numeral XIX. Previously, the park was home to about 42 species of birds. For entertainment (summer), you can ride boats, ride a carriage, or ride horses. Practical information. Getting there by public transport is very inconvenient; the bus from the Mtsensk bus station takes about half an hour and runs a couple of times a day. One at lunchtime, one at evening. The final stop is Spasskoye-Lutovinovo, you need to get off a little earlier, ask the locals, they will tell you which stop is closest to the ticket office. On the way back, it makes sense to walk past the exhibition center in the direction of the school to the memorial to those killed in the Great Patriotic War. The stop is located near the store, so you can grab a seat on the bus.

(Translated by Google) Hi all! It just so happened that living 130 km from the Root Desert, I was here only twice, in 2006 and 08/15/2021. It’s not easy to convey the beauty and atmosphere of this place in words! Compared to 2006, Korennaya has, of course, changed a lot. A lot of renovations were done to the buildings. Everything is painted and cleaned! Everywhere is clean! In the main church, the entire right wall is currently being painted, but services continue! We went by car. The parking lot is big! Comfortable! Lots of souvenirs, icons, books, etc. There are hotels. The territory of Korenaya is very large! There are two fonts. One is by the river, and the other is in the forest! Those who are brave can test themselves with ice water :). I swam and I will say that after about ten minutes you feel as if the sea is knee-deep! :) Advice! Swim, at least try to take a dip in the plunge pool near the river, they say the water is warmer there. But there are always long queues there! I swam in the forest, where the queue is shorter and the water comes straight from a source in the ground! She's icy! I was able to dive waist deep only on the 10th attempt... :) In general, friends, I won’t write much. All this needs to be seen and, most importantly, felt for yourself!!! Be sure to come!!! Even if not for prayer, but at least for rest and correct, good thoughts that will definitely appear when you set foot on the land of the Kursk Root Hermitage! Good luck everyone! p.s. on the territory of Korennaya, there is a place where they sell bread, delicious buns with a variety of fillings and of course fruit drinks and kvass are also very tasty!!! and whoever is interested in how things are going there during the Pandemic, I’ll say this, yes, there are signs everywhere about the availability of masks and gloves!!! But we walked without them, like almost all people! No one swore or demanded obligatory observance of the mask regime! If anyone has any questions, I will definitely answer them!

The territory of the monastery is well-groomed and neat. I was surprised by the wide variety of flowers planted on the territory. There are also a lot of benches on the territory, sitting on which you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of nature and silence. The monastery is attractive to tourists. Not only Kursk residents come here, but also residents of Moscow and a number of other neighboring cities who are interested in holy places. Svyato Uspenskiy Kafedral'nyy Sobor G. Smolensk, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a significant religious site in Smolensk. Constructed at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, this cathedral holds historical and spiritual importance. Located in the central part of the city of Smolensk on Cathedral Hill. Erected at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. An amazing place for the soul, where the Lord embraces you with his love! I like to come to the cathedral when there are not many people, I can calmly pray, turn to God, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the saints of God. You can venerate any icon with prayer and request; there are places where you can simply sit and breathe the spirit of the cathedral, this is especially important for elderly and sick people. Of course, on great holidays there is Grace everywhere, it’s just very crowded, you have to stand close together. Go enjoy God's house, its splendor and its beauty. Think about saving your soul!!! Well, if you have such an honor to turn the temple with flowers, then you should not sleep for long, do it in advance, do not take a sin on your soul not to let people near the icon before the holiday, you will be known as wretched in mind (Original) The Smolensk fortress wall, also known as the Smolensk kremlin, is a historic defensive structure that dates back to 1595-1602. It played a crucial role in the city's defense during the heroic 20-month battle against the Polish army. The fortress boasts impressive medieval walls and towers, including the iconic Assumption Cathedral. Built by architect Fyodor Kon, this architectural marvel spans 6.
(Translated by Google) A wonderful architectural monument, erected back in 1602 by the architect Fyodor Kon. In some places the fortress wall is perfectly preserved, in some places, but there are only two of them, you can climb it and walk through the galleries. But basically, access is closed everywhere, despite information on the Internet that you can walk freely along the wall. The wall itself, at present, is not developing in any way as a tourist attraction, although this is our history. Which, by the way, foreigners are very surprised by. In some places, sections of the wall are littered with picnickers, which also causes wild surprise, given the historical and architectural value of the site. But, nevertheless, the wall is very beautiful, from various points of the city and is a must-see! Look for the Saturday Travels channel on YouTube, we have a full review there.

(Translated by Google) A very interesting historical object, but now in poor condition. Only three of the 18 surviving towers house museums and are accessible inside. The rest are empty. In the Veselukha tower there is a warehouse for all sorts of rubbish from the adjacent theological seminary of the Smolensk diocese. You can't climb the walls anywhere. For years the fortress wall has not been restored, and when it is restored, funds are obviously not spent properly. The wall was founded in 1595 by Boris Godunov, and construction was completed in 1602. In troubled times, he will play a very important role in preserving the Moscow state. The most preserved - the eastern part of the wall is the most picturesque, but you cannot climb the wall there - all the entrances are blocked and closed. The surrounding area is not suitable for tourists.

Svyato-Uspenskiy Kafedral'nyy Sobor

Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
The Svyato-Uspenskiy Kafedral'nyy Sobor is an enormous Orthodox church with a captivating backstory. It was constructed on the grounds where a Uniate bishop was tragically martyred, highlighting the remarkable transition from one religious establishment to another. From its square, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking city view. This magnificent temple boasts Belarus's largest bell, weighing 5.2 tons and standing at a height of 2 meters.
A must see for any tourist. It is very beautiful and has a rich history.
Yohane A — Google review
The Holy Assumption Cathedral in Vitebsk is one of the city’s most recognizable and impressive landmarks. Located on a hill above the Western Dvina River, it offers fantastic views of the surrounding area and adds a special charm to the city’s skyline. Its white walls and golden domes shine brightly, especially in the late afternoon sun. The area around the cathedral is clean, peaceful, and perfect for a walk or a moment of calm. 🌊 What made our visit truly unforgettable was the unexpected event happening right in front of the cathedral. A group of girls was performing energetic modern dances, inspired by styles like hip-hop and Jagger. There was music playing, and a small team was filming the performance with professional cameras. It seemed like a rehearsal or maybe a shoot for a dance video. The atmosphere was fun, creative, and full of life. 🪩 The mix of classic architecture and modern youth culture was something you don’t see every day. It showed how places like this cathedral are not just historical or religious sites but also active parts of local culture and community life. If you’re in Vitebsk, don’t miss this spot. Even if you don’t go inside, just being there is a special experience ✨.

(Translated by Google) The Assumption Cathedral in Vitebsk stands on the high bank of the Dvina, where in pre-Christian times there was a sanctuary of the pagan goddess Mokosha. And the hill was called Bald Mountain, according to legend, witches flocked there for the Sabbath. The temple largely follows the fate of the nearby Church of the Resurrection. Both of them were built in the 18th century and blown up in 1936 by the Bolsheviks. Factory workshops were built on the site of the cathedral; after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the enterprise went bankrupt, the buildings were abandoned, and they collapsed. At the beginning of this century, the public demanded the restoration of the temple, and in 1998, Patriarch Alexy II, whose monument stands opposite the cathedral, consecrated the cornerstone of its new foundation. The first liturgy in the lower chapel took place in 2005, the work was completed 6 years later. The cathedral was revived in full accordance with the original design of the Italian Joseph Fantan, which was modeled on the Roman church of San Carlo al Corso in the mature Baroque style. A wide staircase leads from the embankment to the square in front of the undulating façade, decorated with a Corinthian order colonnade. Under the triangular pediment between the three-tiered towers is an icon of the Mother of God. The largest bell in Belarus weighing 5.2 tons is suspended from the belfry.

The Marc Chagall Museum, opened in 1997, is a unique house museum located in the former home of the artist. Unlike many other museums dedicated to Chagall, this art center focuses on showcasing the inner perception of the avant-garde artist through his paintings and scenography. With over 300 works including lithographs and etchings, the museum has painstakingly collected pieces from around the world.
Lovely place. Just 10 minute walking from railway station.
Irena M — Google review
No photos or video allowed inside. Why? Only allowed to see 4 rooms of the house. The rooms are very small and they have yours with 20+ people in them, which make it impossible for all to fit in a room to hear the tour guide. The positives: only $1 for our family to enter and the outside was spacious and relaxing.

Sights & Landmarks
The Khatyn Memorial Complex stands as a poignant tribute to the Belarusian people's resilience and the tragic events of World War II. This symbolic cemetery and eternal flame commemorate the 149 local residents, including elderly and children, who were brutally murdered by the Nazis in 1943. The complex includes a museum with exhibits depicting life before, during, and after the war, as well as the construction of the memorial.
Easy parking, well maintained, no entrance fee. A somber and humbling experience.

An unusual place. It is difficult to describe the atmosphere and all the feelings when you are among these monuments of human cruelty. A special sensation is causing by the bells ringing for the deads. At the same time there is some kind of harmony here. This place is definitely worth a visit. The entrance is free.
IVTALA — Google review
The first thing you need to do is go to the museum (kind of unnoticeable on the far left of the parking lot) and buy a $2 book that gives the history and significance of all of the memorials (book is in English and Russian). There is a museum that shows photos of past memorials and photos of construction of present ones. It also has stories and photos of survivors from Khatyn and other villages--only in Russian though. The whole complex is very harrowing, but so worthwhile. Very well done in typical Soviet style (concrete).

Dudutki is a charming open-air museum located near the village of Dudichi, Belarus. It offers a unique insight into the everyday life of a 19th-century Belarusian countryside house. Visitors can explore an ethnographic gallery and craft workshops including pottery, leatherworking, weaving, and more. The complex also features a wooden church, windmill, bakery, brewery, and creamery. Guests can learn about ancient crafts and folk celebrations while tasting freshly baked Belarusian bread.
Traditional Belorussian estate that I have visited multiple times in the last ten years. If you are going for a guide ask for Irina who has been there since 1997! Walk around try the homemade cheese and bread. Highly recommend the straw, linen and ceramic workshops!! Talk to the artists - great place friendly people :)

It’s worth visiting but once, they also offer nice parties for kids during the summer with lots of open air activities such as foam parties and holi, however, it’s much better to purchase tickets online at least a few days prior to the event to save on the entrance fee on the day of festivities . They have a playground for kids and a nice collection of retro cars. The bistro on summer weekends and during any celebrations is just a nightmare!!! You have to wait in line for at least 30 minutes and the food is rather average, however the prices are rather low

I suggest you to take an excursion there, so you’ll have lots of fun with tastings of local products and drinks. Area is nice, but I was disappointed that everything was in Russian. Even the guides don’t do the tours in Belarusian. That’s sad. And the shield at the entrance wasn’t in a native language.

The National Library of Republic of Belarus is a modern and uniquely designed library with a large collection of books. The building stands at over 73 meters high and has the shape of a rhombocuboctahedron, making it an impressive sight to behold. Visitors can take a panoramic elevator to one of the best observation platforms, where they can use binoculars with 30x magnification to view distant objects.
Although far from the city center, the library is an easy ride on the metro (even for someone who speaks no Belarusian, like me). It’s completely worth it, as around the back of the library you can pay to go up to the 35th floor to see the surrounding view of the city. Beautiful!!!

The experience is enhanced with moving elements and captivating light displays that bring these historical sites to life.

Yesterday, 30/05/2025, I had the pleasure of exploring Museum Strana Mini in Minsk—a true gem showcasing the rich history and architectural beauty of Belarus in miniature. Every detail, every exhibit reflects the passion and dedication of the talented creators behind this masterpiece. A huge thank you to the team for their incredible work in preserving and presenting Belarusian heritage in such a captivating way! If you're ever in Minsk, this is a must-visit!
Gheith N — Google review
Great place for tourists. One can see miniatures some of the main sights of Belarus. An audio guide will tell you about all of them. I strongly recommend visiting the museum. It will be interesting to children and grownups as well. By the way some maquettes have figured of fairytale or movie characters🧚‍♀️ There is also a VR helmet where you can look at sights in their current state (but I felt a bit dizzy after it).
Elizaveta C — Google review
A waste of money. The exhibition is very small, with few items on display, and their quality is extremely poor — it felt like little care or effort went into their creation. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing experiences I had in Belarus.
Andrej B — Google review
I really enjoyed going to see the museum on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't too busy and I got to spend a lot of time looking at the really detailed models (19 total). The models themselves are so intricate and they move and have a light show. An audio guide available in English is included in the price of the ticket and it's super cool to see and learn about sites that you can later see in person. Also the staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming.

Stalin Line

Open air museum
Museums
Nestled just 25 kilometers northwest of Minsk, the Stalin Line Museum is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. This WWII museum showcases an impressive array of Soviet military artifacts, including bunkers, trenches, tanks, and fighter jets that once formed part of a significant defensive line stretching over 1000 kilometers along the western border of the Soviet Union. The sprawling grounds offer immersive experiences that transport you back to a time when these structures played crucial roles in wartime defense.
A must-see even for non-history minded tourists. Museum already rightfully glows in reviews. Ditto to that. I'll add two specific points of appreciation that perhaps seldom get recognized. First, HUGE thank you for English! Well-written, proper English. It's not an afterthought, it's a first-class citizen throughout, and that makes museum accessible to mainstream audience. Second, thank you for so beautifully presenting less sexy, nuts & bolts hardware that doesn't usually get attention. Corrugated steel chambers, bridge layers, trench diggers, reinforced vehicle maintenance structures. And you don't just have these items sitting out back unlabeled, you've taken care to identify what they are and what they do. Wow. One request next time placards are revamped: Please add year & location of manufacture if possible. Thank you for so competently preserving this important history.

The unique historical and cultural complex of the Great Patriotic War. Be sure to come with the kids! Very interesting. You can take an excursion, which guides in the form of soldiers and officers from the Second World War will conduct for you. And you can bypass everything yourself. Fortifications remained - trenches, bunkers of those times, weapons from which, by the way, you can shoot for a nominal fee. There is also a technique of the post-war and Soviet period. On holidays, performances in the open. And in the local souvenir shop you can buy home souvenirs.

We arrived by private car on Sunday at 10.00, and by 17.00 we had not seen everything, tried it, listened to it, not ridden everything, not photographed everything 🙃. In recent years, the park has expanded significantly. Even without a tour, visiting the park is a real interactive journey into the past centuries of the beautiful land of Belarus. At the time of our visit, 4 restaurants in the center of the park ensure that numerous tourists do not go hungry. You can also buy delicious hot bread (whole grain, kvass, with honey) at the bakery and try it right away. You won't be left without souvenirs either. In each workshop you can buy themed souvenirs, and at the entrance to the park there is a main store. The atmosphere of the park is given not only by reconstruction and exhibits, but also by costumed staff, pets, colorful flowers, nature, and also music that sounds literally from the stones along the paths! (Translated by Google) Yesterday I was there for the second time. To be honest, I didn’t like it this time. For this price I would like to get quality service. Excursions are driven away in herds. At four o'clock the staff sighed sadly that they were serving the 54th group... The prices in the restaurant are decent, there is not much choice, the wait for a free seat is long due to the incredibly slow service. Along the route, the eye is not pleased with the unkemptness: broken paths, broken toilet locks, greasy stains on the menu in the restaurant. A good idea was turned into a place for pumping money in the worst sense of the word. Disappointed.

Mir Castle, a 16th-century fortification located in the town of Mir, Belarus, is a stunning example of Gothic-style architecture. The castle has been beautifully renovated and now houses a museum with well-curated displays on the history of the Radziwills. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Visitors can explore its impressive interiors and enjoy picturesque grounds that include an adjoining pond.
This is a really interesting castle for anyone! I am really happy I decided to go to the castle and learn more about the history of the region. It was well worth getting the audio guide! Their is too much stuff to simply read and get through. The curators did an amazing job allowing people to go through the different towers of the castle and having people explore the castle. It was really fun to climb through the different stairs and levels. Beware for the tall people the stairs were made for smaller men!

This castle complex was by far my favorite tourist attraction in Belarus. It has been meticulously restored and the ticket covers entry to all aspects of the complex including the museum and cathedral. The signage was good and the personnel were friendly. The nearby Radziwill castle could learn about customer service from this castle. You could spend as much time as you like here and enjoy the beautiful parks surrounding the complex. I recommend at least one night in Mir to see the castle illuminated at night, at sunrise and at sunset. If I had known you can book a room in the castle I would have done that!

Lida Castle, a restored citadel dating back to the 14th century, is steeped in legends and celebrated in literature. Once a magnificent residence of Deputy Chancellor Pawel Stefan Sapieha, it now stands in ruins. Built around 1610, the stone castle featured an entrance gate and chapel surrounded by ramparts and bastions. Despite not everything being restored yet, it remains one of the most ancient castles in Belarus.

Ratusz w Zamościu, also known as Zamosc Town Hall, is a stunning Renaissance building that serves as the centerpiece of the Market Square. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts an impressive facade and ornate chambers adorned with beautiful murals and frescoes. Visitors can explore the town hall's interior, climb its grand staircase for panoramic views of the square, and even catch live music performances at certain times.
Quite an impressive city hall. You can go up the stairs to take a better look at the Market Square which is rather colorful and cute and full of cafes. There is a tourist info center on the side of the building that will give you a lot of interesting info. You can also hear the musician playing from the upper part of the building at certain hours. The town itself is very nice and truly worth visiting. By the way, there are a lot of events organized at the Market Square

Zamość Town Hall is a beautiful and well-preserved Renaissance town hall. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town. It is a large and imposing 16th century building with a richly decorated facade. The interior of the town hall is also impressive, with its high ceilings, grand staircase, and ornate chambers. The beautiful murals and frescoes on the walls are quite impressive. I highly recommend visiting this gem!

Old Town Café is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys delectable salads and casseroles. The recent restoration has only enhanced the beauty of this place. Additionally, they have undergone a change in name and menu, now offering delicious Thai cuisine. It is definitely worth trying their excellent food at prices comparable to those found in the old town. The chef's culinary skills are exceptional, as evidenced by the mouthwatering soups and the exquisite duck served on a bed of vegetables.

(Translated by Google) A revelation: quiet, slightly in front of the market square, i.e. peaceful, without overcrowding compared to what's happening in the restaurants on the market square, and most importantly, delicious food for reasonable money, with a nice atmosphere and wonderful service. I was there twice during my stay in Zamosc, once alone because I was the only one hungry, the rest had eaten at a pierogi shop earlier, which I didn't like, and I ate salmon soup and pork chop with fries and salads, I left feeling as full as a beetle and everything was fresh and delicious in a few days. again we were wondering what to eat and where, so I took my family to this particular restaurant, everyone left full, we didn't spend a fortune, it was delicious and nice, again I ate salmon soup, I really recommend it, it was a finger licking sensation, and the kids had chicken soup, spaghetti and pancakes, and my wife and everyone had dumplings with groats. satisfied and everyone liked it. If we are ever in Zamość again, we will definitely come for dinner. Opatowska Gate is a significant symbol of Sandomierz, standing as the sole preserved city gate from medieval times. It was part of the city's defense system, along with three other gates. The street connected to the gate leads to Sandomierz Market Square and is lined with historic tenement houses hosting cafes, craft workshops, and souvenir shops. This bustling area comes alive during tourist season but offers a quieter charm off-peak.
One of the charming streets of Sandomierz. During the period of Second Republic hospital St. Spirit was located at Opatowska 10, near the Opatowska Gate. This hospital moved to a new location in 1983 after revitalization of Sandomierz Market Place. Great place just to stroll and breathe in the spirits of an old era...

Sights & Landmarks
Krzyżtopór Castle is a sprawling 17th-century fortress built in the Italian palazzo style. Despite being in ruins, it still exudes a sense of grandeur and power. Exploring its crevices, halls, and even the basement is an awe-inspiring experience. The open aisles and halls allow the wind to rush through, creating harsh streams of cold air on windy days. Inside, there's a small restaurant where visitors can enjoy warm coffee and sweet treats.
Extensive castle ruin from the 1600's. Multiple levels to tour. Kids loved it.
Martin K — Google review
A castle ruïn that is 100% worth visiting. The size of the castle is huge. Because it is stripped down (Polish Swedish war, later a big fire) you will realise as a visitor: what a work! Because they had to bring all the bricks to this specific location. Also, it makes you a little humble.Have visited it for a second time, as impressive as 14 years ago.

Castle is really great 👍🏻 Yes, its ruins, but it’s incredibly size! Unfortunately, we didn’t get inside, because was some holiday and castle was closed. Pls, check this moment in advance:) Definitely I’ll be back

Fascinating place with great history behind it. Cool to see the walls still standing, it could provide some extra information boards thrown around the castle to provide a bit more detail on each room you're in, rather than just the general name of the room. Other than that, definitely worth the visit if you are a history nerd.

16.8.2025 impressive architecture, but undersized parking, zero explanations in english(despite EU funds), very poor scientific guidance and info plates and visually weird attempts of reconstruction....learned in internet much more free of charge than for the 19 PLN admission...

Limestone karst cave network with clusters of stalactites & a museum with a Neanderthal exhibition.
Amazing limestone caves that were formed over 100s of thousands of years. It includes some amazing archaelogical finds like wooly mammoths, cave bears, wolves and the use of Neanderthals 60,000 years ago.

Didn't allow pictures as if who knows what they are hiding in the cave. Troll's treasure? Plenty of pictures already online in other reviews. Cave is tiny and not worth the money. Better spend your hard earned cash in the castle next door, more entertaining and customer-focused.

Interesting caves and nice live guides, but when we arrived we did not have an option of a different language and had to listen the guide in Polish, but the cost is reasonable. you should dress well as in summer it is +9 C inside. You are not supposed to take pictures but probably it was meant to avoid flash

Beautiful cave. Tour in Polish but can get an English audio guide. I'd suggest paying for parking that is not under the trees. We got a large chip in the windshield from the trees while on the tour.

Cant say anything. We were going from Warsaw to this place. Unfortunately, we havent got there inside and not only we, as there were no tickets available from 12 a.m. So it matters to buy tickets in advance and pay attentiion to working hours.
Mary — Google review
It's super cool, but the place isn't exactly the best. You can tell there are a ton of bootleg stores in the area with only 3/4 regional things. The place is kind of overall very getto and the wait times are HORRENDOUS. Waited 3hrs to get in, and when I finally did it was for 5mins at best. Looks cool at first, but don't come here. 2 stars for the looks in the cave. Nothing too out-of-the-ordinary but it's nothing special. Just some stalagmites. Also, only polish??? What happened to being friendly to people outside of poland?! I saw some people from the UK and they were totally confused. DONT COME HERE. GRAVE MISTAKE.
Noah V — Google review
Great place to visit for the whole family. Beware, the inside of the cave and its visit for the 20 minutes inside has about 8 degrees Celsius. There is no gift store with extra clothing (hint, hint organizers) thus bringing your own polar or a sweater with a hood is advisable. This is a guided tour, 15 people per guide. Don't be surprised if you have to wait 3-4 hours for your turn, buying tickets online and reserving your spot is a good idea. Recommended.

Royal Castle in Chęciny

Mentioned on
1 list
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Royal Castle in Chęciny is a 13th to 14th-century hilltop fortress with well-preserved towers and walls, offering stunning views of the Tatra Mountains. Originally built on the site of an earlier fortress dating back to at least the 10th century, it served as a residence for Polish monarchs and underwent expansions over time. While uninhabited for centuries, the castle still retains much of its structure and offers a picturesque setting atop a rocky terrain.
Nice castle with good views. Good to learn a little bit about history of this place. There are two towers with stairs on the top. Beautiful panoramic views from top of the towers. As a bonus you can make pictures in knights helmets.
Kamil K — Google review
If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive place to break up a days travel insurance would thoroughly recommend Chęciny Zamek. We were probably here an hour or so and it has some great interactive things for the kids. It's open air so in winter it got pretty cold especially at the top of the towers but the views of the surrounding area were great. There is also a restaurant by the free car park and toilets (4zł at time of writing) on the walk upto the entrance. There's a gift shop on site and sometimes you can hire a private guide as you walk in. They took card and cash payment at the ticket booth in winter 2025.
Andy H — Google review
A beautiful place to visit. But the cashier does not speak English. For a child who is 13 years old did not sell a discounted ticket because documents were left at car. I don't understand how they can't sell you discounted ticket for child. While buying tickets the cashier were talking on the phone and the queue become very long. There is a very small platform on one of the towers and if the group comes up there is no place to turn around. In this case there should be a sign down that more than 7 people can't go up. Toalets are not free. (4PLN)
Zane P — Google review
It is located just a few kilometres from the motorway connecting Warsaw to Krakow, making it an ideal place for tourists to stop along this route. The visit is enjoyable and lasts about an hour or less.. From the free car park, it takes 10 minutes to walk up to the castle along a small pedestrian street lined with wooden statues. Admission costs 23 PLN, it is possible climb two of the three towers enclosed within the surrounding wall. You then descend on the other side. At a certain point, the road forks into two: one path leads to the village, while the other leads back to the car park and the commercial activities. Built at the end of the 13th century, the castle was once home to knights, nobles and queens. It was destroyed and burned in an uprising against the royal family in 1607. It was rebuilt three years later, but suffered further destruction at the hands of various armies from 1655 onwards. Some maintenance work was carried out on the ruins in 1880, and it was rebuilt after the Second World War to restore it to its former glory.
Fabio R — Google review
The place is certainly impressive and excites the mind. Both the castle on the mountain and the town at its foot are steeped in history and make you want to spend as much time there as possible.

Ignas K — Google review
Very cool castle. This is one of those hidden gems that you find in Poland. You will park in the parking lot pretty far down below. There's a little bit of a hike to get to the castle from the parking lot but it is a beautiful Forest and Trail. Once you get up to the top there's an entrance and you will pay the fee to get in. There are two towers that you can climb all the way to the top and get a panoramic view of the whole Countryside. My recommendation is to take the tallest one and just go up that one because the views are pretty similar. There are all types of things to see and to visit once you are in the main part and I just think that this place is beautiful.

Beautiful castle, organized as a museum. It,'s very well preserved, a nice dive into history, suitable for all ages
Stelian S — Google review
Kežmarok Castle (Kežmarský hrad) is one of the best-preserved urban castles in Slovakia. It’s located right in the heart of the town of Kežmarok, at the foot of the High Tatras. The castle dates back to the 15th century and was built on the site of an earlier Gothic church. Over the centuries, it served various roles – defensive, residential, and administrative – and was owned by wealthy townspeople and nobility. Architecturally, the castle has a compact structure with corner towers and a central courtyard surrounded by solid walls. It has the character of a fortress but still retains an elegant appearance, making it quite photogenic. From the outside, it looks impressive – light-colored walls, red-tiled roofs, and surrounding greenery create a beautiful contrast. Visitors can enter the courtyard and, with a guided tour, explore some of the museum exhibitions inside. The castle houses displays related to the history of the Spiš region, medieval weaponry, and everyday life in centuries past. Even if you don’t go inside, it’s worth stopping by just to admire the structure and atmosphere from the outside.

A castle converted into a chateau that we could only see from the park, because as tourists we hadn´t looked up some information beforehand and we hadn´t known there was a fair going on and we didn't want to go to it. So next time. The place is beautiful. :-)

If you visit the castle you need to pay for the tour, but it’s definitely worth it and not expensive. So many interesting things, super bit of local history. Town is good, but quiet on a Sunday. Recommend!

Unfortunately close at the weekends out of the season! ((September to June) We were there at weekend and facing with No tourist friendly situation! All the museums, churches and tourist attractions was closed. However the old town is nice. There is no place for food or coffee. Sad! Train and bus transport is OK.

One of the best surviving town castles in Slovakia. It houses several recently finally aged exhibitions, including that of the medieval weaponry, Imre Thököly, a pharmacy and the history of the tourism in Hungary and Slovakia. The castle itself is fantastic, and the interiors only increase the overall experience. The chapel is especially worth visiting.

The castle outside was good and it is positive that there was a small café as well on the yard. However it cannot be visited individually, only with guidance, which means it cannot be visited any time you wish. So unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to see the museum part.

Štrbské Pleso is a stunning glacial lake nestled amidst a picturesque mountain setting, offering visitors the chance to explore resorts and take leisurely strolls along its waterfront hiking trail. Comparable to Morskie Oko, although smaller in size, it boasts crystal-clear waters and is surrounded by majestic mountains. While it may get crowded during peak season, there are plenty of souvenir shops and opportunities for activities such as boating and canoeing.
Nice walk around the lake and around the town. Nice old buildings and great views from the lake. Busy with visitors but as expected. Worth the trip on the train from Tatranska Lomnica for a round trip all day fare if only 4€. Much cheaper than parking.
