Brilliant museum and exhibition. Unfortunately, air condition was turned off and there were leaking in the new part in the left part of the window (with great view of nearby river). PS: the lack of air condition ruined our experience and we expect that it could ruin display items too. Hope that this issue will be fixed.

There are many benefits thanks to which teenagers and large families can attend for free. I was completely delighted with the museum, especially with the painting by Aivazovsky (Original) (Translated by Google) The museum is located in a magnificent estate of the early 19th century and the interiors of the halls correspond to that time. You will definitely find it interesting. Such museums are now a great rarity. A wonderful collection of icons of the 16th-19th centuries, Western European and Russian painting. The space of the halls is thought out, there is a lot of light. It was interesting to find here a majolica dish of the 17th century with an image of Saint Apollonia, the patroness of dentists. It is unlikely that you will see an image of this saint anywhere else in Russia.

On the ground floor of the City Estate House of Chistokletovs (1809) there is a delightful collection of icons of the 16th-19th centuries. The collection contains about 20 icons from the lost churches of Borovsk and Kaluga, the Kazan Convent in Kaluga and the Polotnyany Zavod estate. On the second floor there is a very large collection of portraits. And although I am not a particular fan of this type of painting, I enjoyed looking at Makovsky, Yaroshenko, Vereshchagin, Surikov, Savrasov. In addition to portraits, there is Aivazovsky (Surf, View of Odessa on a Moonlit Night), Polenov (Zhukovka on Klyazma, Study from the Balkan War), Shishkin, Kustodiev (Flowers), one room with diverse paintings by foreign artists in the style of Rubens and Italians of the 17th century. There is a hall with works by artists of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, as well as some furniture and dishes from the 18th-19th centuries. Well, the mansion itself looks great, the outside has been completely restored, but inside there are only separate rooms.

Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Church of Kosma and Damian, a stunning example of late Baroque architecture, was constructed in 1774 and is notable for its elegant design. This remarkable structure features five striking black domes that rise majestically from the turrets, while its four-tiered bell tower showcases a unique silhouette that narrows at the top. Originally built separately from the main church building, it wasn't until 1824 that it was connected to the refectory.
(Translated by Google) An architectural monument in the “late Baroque” style is the Church of Cosmas and Damian, the construction of which was completed in 1794. Based on the “similarity of handwriting,” it is assumed that it was built by one of Rastrelli’s students. Why they decided to build the church in a style completely uncharacteristic for Kaluga is unknown. This is not just a five-domed, but a five-towered temple. 5 figured under-dome “candles”, as it were with “wax smudges” are just as strongly directed upward, like that of the Smolny Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The church looks exactly like a cathedral and it’s even surprising that it stands on such a small, quiet street (Suvorov Street) - and that this area was in the 18th century the distant outskirts of the city. An extraordinary aspiration upward - the rapid rise of all compressed verticals - makes this temple one of the best examples of “European” Baroque in Russia. It became the highest masterpiece of the late Baroque - just as the Church of St. George, built a century before, was and remains a masterpiece of the period of the birth of the Baroque style in Rus', the very transition from the posad style to the Baroque .These 2 churches symbolically marked the beginning and end of a huge era. The main volume of the temple has a petal base in plan - the only example of such a construction of all Kaluga churches. The height of the cathedral is emphasized by 6 tiers of windows of different shapes (and sometimes niches replacing windows). There are almost no lush patterns characteristic of the Baroque - the entire ornament is made up of the airy openwork outlines of the church silhouette itself. The walls of the temple are white, but from red roofs and black domes, it seems multi-colored, especially from a distance. A whole cascade of bright the roofs that horizontally line the walls and towers look magnificent. No matter how tall the temple itself is, the multi-tiered bell tower above its western porch is even higher. According to a completely “Kaluga” tradition, it is topped with a spire. All Kaluga spiers are a sign of the same era. Once upon a time, the bell tower stood separately, but a large refectory built later connected it with the temple. Even at that time it was a very expensive church. It cost the city and parishioners 70,000 silver rubles and was one of the richest in Kaluga. The church of these saints, apparently, had stood in the local settlement for a long time. And in 1794, the magnificent church that now stands was erected. The main altar of the new the temple was consecrated in the name of the Savior Not Made by Hands, but in popular In perception, the church remained under the name Kozmodemyanskaya, although only a chapel was dedicated to these saints (another chapel is St. Nicholas). Of the church objects that were in the church before the revolution, the Gospel printed on blue paper (1755) and the breviary of 1658 should be mentioned .The church was famous for the “Passionate” icon of the Mother of God. It was a special, locally revered icon, very ancient. It was decorated with an expensive silver-gilded chasuble, pearls and precious stones. The church also contained the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, brought from the Pochaev Lavra. It hung at the top of the arch, and once a week it was lowered down on cords .Parishioners had the opportunity to venerate it. The unique beauty did not save the temple from the Soviet vandalism. In 1937, the temple was finally closed and equipped for temporary detention of prisoners. The prisoners were inside the temple, and armed guards stood outside. In the post-war years, the temple was used as a garage and household warehouses. In Khrushchev’s times, when a new wave of persecution of the Russian Empire began The Orthodox Church and the temple were not touched because of its very beautiful, original architecture. In 1960, the temple was declared a monument of architecture and urban planning of republican significance. The barbaric attitude towards the temple contributed to its slow destruction. The values stored in it previously disappeared without a trace long ago. On July 17, 1992, the temple was returned to the Kaluga diocese. Since 1998, regular services began in the temple. Now in the temple Divine services are being held and restoration work continues. In the park in front of the southern facade of the church there is a monument to all those who fell in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other “hot spots”. Due to its proximity to it and to the memorial on Victory Square, the church can also be called a military memorial. There are 2 Sunday schools at the temple - for children and for adults. On Saturdays at 16.00 spiritual and educational conversations are held, pilgrimage trips are organized.

(Translated by Google) The temple is a masterpiece of architecture, without exaggeration. It is simply magnificent, mesmerizing, and you don’t want to leave. One of the few churches in Kaluga that have not yet been restored. We need investments, scientific restoration, under the supervision of specialists. The church does not have funds for this, they only have them for cheap plastic windows that can be seen. The state should help here. This temple would decorate any capital city, it’s a pity that it is in such a state (Original) Great cafe of Russian traditional cuisine. There is a large selection of food and drinks. Cozy atmosphere in the cafe, polite and nice staff. Fresh food, very tasty, fast serving. Reasonable prices, you can pay by card.

I got an impression that this is the most trendy place in entire Kaluga to eat, and we were not the only guests from abroad during one evening, locals brought their English-speaking friends to try out traditional Russian cuisine. Okay, let's talk about the food. The food was just amazing! I've seen that there were other good places around but never had a chance to visit them thanks to these guys. I cannot recommend any meal in particular, I was tasting different things every day and enjoyed all of them!

Low prices comparing with most of the restaurants nearby. Quality is ok but considering price level it’s value for money. The place is good for lunch and breakfast.

(Translated by Google) We were there on December 23rd, celebrating the New Year. The food is just superb, the chefs are great. Very tasty. But as for the music, of course they let us down very badly. They invited a DJ, he worked for a couple of hours and that was the end of all the music. When I was in the mood to dance, the music was already playing, as it usually plays in the background in any supermarket. Funeral, you might say. I asked them to turn on something normal, they answered that they couldn’t, that’s the track list they have. In general, they came, ate and left. By the way, there is not enough food.

(Translated by Google) Zero customer focus. We came for dinner, ordered quite a lot, and ate. The last dish was a pork steak, it turned out to be bloody, we returned the dish and, of course, we refused to pay for it. To this, the administrator began to demand payment from us for a low-quality dish, which is not only inedible, but also dangerous to health. As a result, after numerous disputes, we paid the bill, without the poor-quality dish, and concluded that the administrator was extremely unprofessional. The mood was spoiled. I don't know if we'll come there again.

But today we came in and were not disappointed. pizza, beer, beer plate, cocktails for children, pizza. In short, don’t be greedy and come 🫢 everything is fine! 👍 By the way ! For my birthday, they gave me a cupcake 🤣it’s a small thing, but it’s nice (Original) (Translated by Google) Cozy, quiet, calm. The steaks are excellent, the desserts are excellent, the service is very high quality. A good place for both breakfast and dinner. Pepper sauce, on the one hand, is not at all spicy, but on the other hand, it perfectly sets off the taste of meat, take it and you won’t regret it! Overall, the place is worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) We went to this cafe to have breakfast with friends. Overall a good atmosphere, the cafe is located in the center, easy to get to. The breakfast selection was not very impressive, so I ordered from the main menu. I was pleased with the Provence salad, very tasty. I also took chicken tobacco: it upset me, the meat was not fresh. Of the minuses, I would also note that the waiters forgot who ordered what and the toilet was dirty. By mutual decision of all three people in our company, I give it 3 stars.

(Translated by Google) Not tasty food, long service, waitresses don't know the menu. We wanted to order pizza, but they told us that they had run out of dough 😂 The beer plate is not worth the money, everything is fried in old oil. Argentine style pork with undercooked vegetables. Chicken Caesar is not tasty. I give it a three only for the beer, it’s delicious (on tap).

Kryl'ya is a delightful establishment located in the heart of Kaluga, known for its inviting atmosphere and delicious cuisine. Visitors have praised the unique presentation of dishes and the overall quality of food, making it a popular choice among locals. While some guests have experienced delays in service—particularly with certain items like bread and kebabs—the staff's friendliness shines through. The interior boasts an interesting design, complemented by comfortable seating across two distinct halls.
Everything is very tasty here. Local beer is simply awesome — don’t waste your money, take “Kommandirskoe”.

I've eaten in here quite a few times and the food is always very good. Last time I had the Salmon Pasta and it was very tasty. I was a bit disappointed that they have taken the 'Norwegian Soup' (with a Shot of Vodka and a Gherkin) off the menu as it was very nice.

(Translated by Google) We won a certificate here and that’s exactly how we ended up in this establishment. It's good that you called yesterday and reserved a table, because... everything was busy to capacity😯 EVERYTHING is very tasty. The only thing I didn’t appreciate was the steak, but perhaps not because it wasn’t tasty, but because I didn’t like it🤷🏽‍♂️ The establishment is great. The staff is top notch. Food tower🔥 Prices are normal, but more similar to Moscow than to Kaluga. Although this does not spoil anything 100% (Original)

(Translated by Google) Everything is fine, but having visited the veranda for the second time, I understand that the staff takes a very long time to bring some dishes, a couple of times they forgot to bring bread and kebab, the bread waited 40 minutes out of the promised 20, and the kebab took an hour and another 15 minutes, the waiters simply forgot about it. The establishment is good, the food is delicious, the service needs to be improved, go and take a table to one waiter, not several. By the way, the sausage in the second photo (I don’t remember what the dish is called, it’s a meter long sausage), it’s not very to the taste, defrosted, it’s all falling apart. The rest is all delicious.

(Translated by Google) Great place in the city center. There is its own freight elevator with a lift operator😊👍 nice, interesting interior, unusual presentation of some dishes, good service, the price tag may be a little higher than usual, but it is quite justified. There are two halls inside; we sat in the secondary one, but both were comfortable. The only thing I would like to improve is the range of beers, or at least have all types from the menu available. Beer prices are higher than usual, I think 520 rubles. - 0.5 l., but the varieties are, in principle, not bad. But the rest of the alcohol is at the usual prices and in an expanded range (in particular cocktails). We were there on a day off and what couldn’t please us was that the halls weren’t overcrowded with guests)) and, as a result of this, the food was served quickly. The menu has a lot of fish and seafood. I would like more chicken salads or other alternatives (without fish)☺ Result: I RECOMMEND!)

An Osteria is a charming wine bar that embodies the essence of Italian culture, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. Here, you'll find light and delightful dishes designed to pair perfectly with your chosen beverages. While menus may not always be available, the experience is enhanced by friendly staff who are eager to share their knowledge about the offerings. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood salads or delectable focaccia topped with tomatoes, all prepared with care.
Very nice interior, polite staff and the food is very good! The focaccia with tomatoes was fabulous. I recommend to visit this place, just keep in mind to reserve a table in advance, since it is quite busy. On Saturday evening there were no free tables at all.

Went for a diner with family members who loves this place. Was recommended to try хачапури, unfortunately it wasn't available on the day. Staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. I had salad with sea food. Loved it. All ingredients were fresh, sea food ( squid and king prawns) cook just perfect. A bit sweet to my liking but still lovely. We also ordered tartar and two chicken salads. All were perfect. Good timing with serving the food, taking orders and payments. Place got quickly full, with everyone seems to enjoying they time. Has an outside space as well as comfortable indoor setting. Lovely interior, not too loud. Would recommend for good food, settings, service.
