Points of Interest & Landmarks
Fonte da Vila, located in a charming square near the Jewish quarter, is a 16th-century marble fountain known for its worn-smooth appearance. This historical site features a communal laundry area and is a popular attraction for visitors exploring the area.
The Fonte would be part of the Judiaria, the Jewish quarter of Castelo de Vide, one of the most important and well-preserved examples of the Jewish presence in Portugal, dating back to the 13th century. The Fonte da Vila was built in the 16th century, during the reign of King João III, probably altered and remodelled or even finished in later years. The structure constituted the point of radial urban development that is present in the five surrounding streets, on a path that linked the Castle to Fonte da Vila, which has been propagated over time. The fountain has a rectangular shape with a pyramidal cover, supported by six marble columns, with four spouts in the centre. In the centre are represented the arms of the county and those of Portugal. Surrounding and delimiting the Fonte da Vila is a wall, which also includes a drinking fountain.

Castle
The Castle of Castelo de Vide is a must-visit in the Alto Alentejo region, near the Spanish border. It offers stunning views over the border and was where a king sealed his marriage to Queen Isabel of Aragon. The castle allows visitors to climb up to the tower and walk over its roofs for beautiful village and landscape views. The museum inside showcases military history, but unfortunately, information is only available in Portuguese.
It’s a steep walk to get to this lovely castle but absolutely well worth the effort to get there . Free entry to the well preserved/ maintained structure that houses a museum dedicated to the revolution of 1974 in which Portugal gained its independence. There are views from the castle are fantastic. This is a lovely experience to visit and get a bit of history in these unique surroundings. Well worth a visit .
Aidan M — Google review
It is a pretty castle still standing tall with a high tower which provides a great view of Castelo de Vide. The surroundings are very beautiful and the town is also quintessentially Alentejana. It deserves a visit.
Hugo P — Google review
Nice for a quick visit but badly preserved in relation to other similar sites in the surroundings. There are other places of interest nearby so worth a visit.

Castle of Castelo de Vide Type: Castle Time spent: 20-40 min Parking: Limited Bike parking: not available Price: free WC: available [!]Currently, the tower is closed. With the intervention of an embassy from the kingdom of Aragon, peace was reached between D. Dinis and D. Afonso Sanches, who agreed to demolish some of the fortifications he had constructed. Under the regency of D. Pedro, Duke of Coimbra, the defenses of the castles in the Alentejo region were strengthened, including Castelo de Vide. A new architectural stage took place at the end of the 17th century, in the context of the Restoration of Portuguese independence, when modernizations were introduced to adapt it to modern artillery standards. Work began in 1641. Years later, in 1660, this fortification was made of two main areas: the castle, to the west, and the São Roque Fort, to the east, interconnected by bastioned walls.
Oleh S — Google review
Unfortunatelly the tower and museum were closed on Monday so did not manage to see it inside.
Cristiana L — Google review
A lovely little town full of interesting history. The Jewish museum was a surprise, nicely done. The pointy eared dog is certainly a lively character, perfectly harmless of course.
Saz D — Google review
Sadly, as of October 2020, the castle is closed for renovation. Some of it can be seen from the outside. You can walk in the narrow cobblestone streets within the walls and marvel at the views (reaching up to Marvão, a nearby wonder) and the tiny houses. In spite of the maintenance work going on the castle, the village is still worthy of the visit.
Jorge G — Google review
Truly captivating little hilltown complete with castle, fountains and old Jewish Quarter. Lots of well-marked walks in and around town. Maps (rather poor) available at the tourist office next to Matriz Santa Maria da Devesa Church.

Judiaria de Castelo de Vide, also known as the Jewish Quarter of Castelo de Vide, is a historic neighborhood that dates back to the 15th century. During this time, many Jews sought refuge in Portugal from persecution in Spain. The quarter features houses with two doors made of granite, connecting the lower floor (often used for commercial purposes) to the upper living quarters.

Nestled in the charming town of Castelo de Vide, Dom Pedro V is a delightful bar and restaurant that exudes an inviting atmosphere. With its dining area set beneath a stunning vaulted ceiling, it offers a cozy yet unpretentious setting for guests to enjoy generous portions of local delicacies and beloved Portuguese classics—all at reasonable prices. The warm and friendly service enhances the experience, making diners feel right at home.
This is typical restaurant in Castelo de Vide! Great typical and tasty Alentejo food. We had “Migas de Espargos com Porco Ibérico” and it was simply amazing. The space is also great and has tradicional. The staff is quite friendly and helpful! Service was fast!!!
Carlos S — Google review
We went in for lunch on a weekend and asked for the venison stew with chestnuts which was actually very good and very tasty. We also had the cabrito cachafrito, and that was actually very bad. It was practically all bones, the gravy was pure grease, the rice that accompanied it was old and stale. This was a deception. The service was regular, not particularly nice. They also don't accept payments by cards.
Hugo P — Google review
Local, full service restaurant where locals wine and dine. Not a tourist spot. Make sure you have cash with you. They don't take cards even though the EC sticker on the main door suggestst different.

If you're visiting Castelo de Vide, you have to try Dom Pedro V. It's one of the oldest restaurant in the village, offering a great selection of local portuguese dishes where the food is very tasty and the portions are big. The restaurant has plenty of room, so it's good for larger groups. The staff is friendly but expect some delays specially if the restaurant is packed.

Nestled in a charming side street, A Confraria is a delightful find that captivates visitors with its unique decor, featuring walls adorned with wine bottles and whimsical cartoons poking fun at traditional Portuguese dishes. The attentive staff are eager to guide you through the menu, which showcases the rich flavors of Alentejo cuisine. Diners can indulge in specialties like tender pork cheeks and rabbit served with rice, all while enjoying the warm atmosphere of this local gem.
Not many words in English, but a desire to make it work despite our own shortcomings in other languages. Super sweet proprietor, very tasty pork cheeks etc. We got a taster plate with different cakes for dessert. Will visit again.

Amazing food. Service with a smile. Locally sourced wines, olive oil and meats. If you want traditional Portuguese dining experience, this is the place. All done with a smile on their face.

Ah, you gotta love this place. The entrance is a bit hidden in a side street but you sure want to find it. The walls are covered with wine bottles and cartoons making fun of the names of Portuguese dishes. Very attentive young waiters will take your order and counsel you. And you will eat local delicacies. The kick? You can sample the dishes. It is possible to order four samples instead of two full meals to try out much more. And that you should, it is very much worth it Pro Tipp: choose only three sample dishes and let the fourth one be a sample plate of local cheeses and meats.

a fantastic family restaurant ... the owner is proud to present different police oils from reginal producers, local ham and cheese and some quite savoury dishes like Bochechas de Porco confitadas and others ... 😋 😋 😋

We were on our way to our next stop and we read that along the way, A Confraria was a good restaurant to check out located in Castelo de Vide. When we walked in at 1pm it was full we were advised that they can reserve for us at 2:30pm. My husband and I decided to walk around the town and kill time. It was worth the wait. The servers can barely speak English but thanks to google translate and of course - food is a universal language we got to order - Soup for starters, Beef cheeks and Rabbit with Rice. Food was very good. The service was a bit slow because the place was packed. Waiting for a 2:30 lunch was worth it. If you visit this area - check this place out - try to make reservations because the place is always full
Colette T — Google review
The family that runs the restaurant has several decades of cuisine experience. The husband in the room and wife cooking deliver great and traditional taste. They are gate keepers of traditional flavours of the region, not only the raw material (great produce and local source meat). They have the traditional dishes and game options. You can ask for wine recommendations and be quite happy with it, a great mix of food and wine. Do feel free to ask help about the village and its history. He has been helping a lot of Americans searching for their family normally Jewish roots in Castelo de Vide, even helping them to enter the century old homes of their relatives by speaking to the current owners.

Churrasqueira Os Amigos, a barbecue restaurant, offers delectable and substantial servings of regional cuisine upon guests' late evening arrival. The beer coated chicken is superb while the vegetable broth is crafted with care, resulting in a mouthwatering experience. Although the food itself is satisfactory and boasts remarkable flavors, the overall atmosphere may appear slightly dilapidated. Nevertheless, customers can look forward to appetizing homemade dishes accompanied by excellent service despite the limited space available at this establishment.

Get the chicken! One of the few places open after 12:30pm when everything shuts down until 2pm. An older "hole in the wall" location. Barbecue chicken for 2 was fantastic. It is served with a bed of fries. Highly recommend as it beat out some of the chicken from our dinner dining experiences.

A favorite of locals, very friendly owner. Noticing us being “tourists”, he didn’t offer a menu. Just asked “Meat” or “Fish”, although looking at a menu later showed at least 8 options under each. 🤣. We chose meat and had a variety platter that was very good, along with salad and of course, olives and bread. Worth the short walk off the beaten track.

Food was pretty wow overall.. Tomato soup was really delicious and full of flavour, fried sardines were great and the confit duck was exceptional- the serving was generous and it was falling off the bone, rosè wine was also yum! The only let downs were the batatas bravas.. which were drowned in aioli and an overly sweet chilli sauce, and so inedible. Sitting outside was also a bit sad with no vibe and under the drippy aircon
