Historic Sites
Castel del Monte is a remarkable 13th-century castle known for its unique octagonal shape and symbolic architectural design. It seamlessly blends influences from various cultures, featuring an octagonal base with eight towers and trapezoidal rooms. The castle's courtyard also boasts an eight-sided layout, adding to its mystique. Visitors can explore the castle's intriguing history through guided tours and even pick up souvenirs at the gift shop.
A gorgeous castle! Castel del Monte is super unique and just stunning to see and visit! The castle has been built with various materials, of which sadly enough only few can be seen. The views that you can experience are amazing. Sadly you now have to pay for parking 5€ for a car and if you want to take the bus up to the castle this is another 2€ per person…
Bob C — Google review
The castle itself is very impressive, but everything around it simply ruins the experience. Parking is paid, as is the shuttle. There's a con man standing by the free restroom trying to take money for admission. After parking and the shuttle, there's a ticket to the castle itself, which costs 10 euros for a tour inside the castle, which is actually quite small; it takes no more than 15 minutes to explore.
George V — Google review
Amazing castle, stunning to look at, but not really much to see inside. Reachable only via rather questionable roads. Still a definite must see when you are in the area.

Amazing Swabian castle dating back to about 1290! It is surrounded by a forest and you only need a few hours to see everything. Bring some good hiking shoes, unless you are able to pay for parking close to the castle. We went during the week and it was not very busy. There are a few great videos inside the castle, which stays amazingly cool in the summer heat!!

We went in early November so it wasn’t too crowded. We parked in the nearby private lot for €5 but I think if you park in the lot ~2km away it’s free. The museum was great. Text panels in Italian and English and braille. Video and tactile exhibits. Audio guide in multiple languages available at an extra cost. Bathrooms on the premises. A restaurant nearby as well. Can be seen in its entirety in under an hour.

Super interesting octagonal castle from the 1240s built by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, Hohenstaufen of Swabia and King of Sicily. Example of Medieval architecture located on a hill some kilometers away from Andria overseeing a large plain. Castel del Monte is surely one of Apulia’s symbols: a medieval fortress erected in the 13th century on the western Murge plateau on the outskirts of the beautiful town Andria, along the Adriatic coast of southern Italy. Built on a hill 540 metres above sea level, the fortress of Castel del Monte in Andria is considered a brilliant example of medieval architecture, reflecting the humanistic culture and vast education of its founder, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily. The octagonal castle is surrounded by an octagonal tower at each corner. Mysterious and an almost inhumanly exact geometric shape, some theories claim that the octagon represented the union of the circle and the square. The octagonal layout gives Castel del Monte the configuration of an elegant stone crown, and is present in all the castle's rooms. There are eight rooms on the ground floor, and eight on the first floor. There are eight towers surrounding the building, all with an octagonal layout and each arranged on one of its eight corners. This obsessive recurrence of the number eight makes the fortress of Castel del Monte an esoteric place that has fascinated the best scholars for centuries. But the fortress has more mysteries for you to slowly discover during your visit. The building is accessed through the entrance portal, a large Arab-style arch with a Greco-Roman tympanum and Gothic double-arched windows. The light colour of the limestone and white marble façades also characterises the interior, now stripped of the decorations that once adorned it. The light illuminating the ground floor comes from eight single-arched windows located on each of the eight sides of the floor plan. The same number of windows can be found on the upper floor, with one small difference: seven windows are double arched, while only one, that facing Andria, is triple arched. You really cannot miss to visit it if you are in Apulia. #castle #fortress #apulia #italy #monument

Compared to other castles in Europe, this is rather lackluster and unimpressive. Unless you have nothing planned near Bari, I would skip a visit.

Absolutely money well spent and then to maintain a structure with this historical value like this is the minimum ♥️ (Original) Posto magico.. Al di fuori di ogni tempo.. Antichi Sapori Montegrosso is a small restaurant surrounded by an orchard, where Pietro Zito, known as the "peasant chef," showcases his healthy cuisine. Using only locally grown ingredients, his strictly traditional dishes are offered at very affordable prices in a casual setting. Visitors rave about the tasting menu and the outstanding quality of every dish, including the delightful finishing touches like fig sorbet and homemade limoncello.
We returned after 16 months and it did not disappoint. Wonderful quality of all courses. We followed a recommendation of our former Puglia specialist to order an outstanding Negroamaro. The service was friendly and attentive and the courses just arrived. Amichi Sapori is worth the travel through endless olive Forrest! And all was very fairly priced. Only in Puglia and not to be found anywhere else in Europe!

Wonderful lunch here. The chef has his own extensive garden and everything prepared is seasonally appropriate and the vegetables and herbs are all grown out back. The wonderful waiter guided us through the menu making great suggestions about sharing. We tried all the antipasti and had fabulous pastas to follow. Dessert of cassata and tiramisu are not to be missed. What a treat.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said. We went for lunch in early June, 2025. Lunch lasted 2.5 hours. I don’t know how we survived eating so much but we couldn’t stop. This was easily in the top 5 meals we have ever had. The quality of the ingredients was obvious and the way the food was prepared was perfect. No unnecessary frills, just well made, great food. We also asked for a recommendation on wine and the server nailed it. The win was very good. I can’t recommend enough going to enjoy a meal here. The experience was amazing! Go here if you can! Oh, and there is something about burning their fields which we witnessed after the meal.

A Culinary Experience You Have to Taste – Absolutely Delicious! If you're looking for a restaurant that combines seasonal, beautifully crafted dishes with a personal touch and top-notch service – this is the place. Every bite feels like it was made with heart and precision, using fresh ingredients and a serious eye for detail. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the staff are professional and genuinely welcoming, and the food? Wow. Saying it's "super tasty" doesn’t even begin to cover it. Each dish that hits the table feels like an experience in itself. Highly recommend going for the tasting menu – it’s the best way to explore the full range of flavors this place has to offer. Just one tip: come hungry and maybe leave the skinny jeans at home. You’re going to want to eat a lot (and love every second of it)!

Everything we ate was 10/10. I was worried about driving out 1hr from Bari and it just being an ok meal. But this meal was worth flying into Bari for. Tasting menu is labeled as 5 courses. But in total we received 20 dishes. I think. Just Go.

What can I say; the food, service and atmosphere are all superb. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. We had one normal set menu and one vegetarian set menu. 50 euros each for around 15 dishes each. I would recommend going there with an empty stomach, we were so full by the main dish which was dish number 10. Then came 5 desserts 😅 The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. (Translated by Google) The atmosphere was very intimate, with just a few tables and the sound of sparrows chirping. Two kittens wandered around, and the food was excellent. The waitress was very courteous and helpful. We enjoyed the first courses, and they were generous portions. On the other hand, the appetizers weren't... the portions were really small. There were two of us, and the cheese platter had half a ricotta cheese to share, a single mozzarella bite... and the charcuterie platter had just one piece of salami, a square of potato and parmigiana pizza... well... I'd reconsider the portions.

Montegusto is an affordable and genuine restaurant situated near the renowned Castel del Monte. It offers stylish rooms with private patios, as well as a terrace that provides stunning views of the castle. Unlike nearby tourist traps, Montegusto is unpretentious and highly recommended by both locals and visitors. The bar/restaurant combines traditional and modern elements, providing a pleasant dining experience for guests.
Excellent. Best place in the whole wode area. Michelin star worthy!
Migue F — Google review
Used to good restaurants, we were happy to discover Montegusto last Tuesday, just before our visit to the Castel del Monte. I'll be honest: what we ordered was very good. However, the service was very unpleasant and disrespectful. We felt very uncomfortable, unwelcome, as if we had nothing to do there. Moreover our Italian is not very good, so we spoke in English: which didn't help to feel better. We would have liked to taste something else, but this attitude put us off and we left after a primi. If client bothers, why working in a restaurant? That's why I can't recommend this place. It's a real shame.

Unpretentious bar/restaurant with a fantastic castle view. Walking distance from the Castel del Monte. Don't even bother going to the osteria at its feet, just a tourists rip off. Montegusto is authentic instead, with kind service and food good enough that even locals go there to enjoy. Inexpensive. Two bottles of rose, two baguettes, a salad and some appetizers just above 50 euros. Highly recommended.

A fine restaurant and bar, combining tradition and modernity at the foot of the famous Castel del Monte. Although it was the Sunday of "Ferragosto" the most crowded in the Italian summer, as far as I concerned, and we hadn't booked a table, we sat quickly and the service was good. Good value for money!
