Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Dartmoor National Park covers an expansive area of 954 sq km, offering various outdoor activities such as walking, horse riding, and rock climbing. The park also provides seasonal guided tours for visitors. Additionally, the nearby town of Bovey Tracey serves as a hub for arts and crafts, hosting the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and the Contemporary Craft Festival.
An unforgettable place where sheep wear leopard print and cows rule the roads. We visited Dartmoor National Park — and it felt like stepping into a slower, older rhythm of life. Rolling hills, heather, wind… and sheep with spotted wool that looked oddly like leopard-print leggings. They wandered freely, completely unfazed by people — like they owned the land. Cows strolled casually down the roads, and drivers patiently waited. It was funny at first, but totally normal here. We loved the ruins of ancient stone structures — covered in moss and filled with silence. Found a small waterfall hidden between rocks — a real gem. If you're looking for a place where nature follows its own rules — this is it. We'll definitely be back.

Did the 13 Tors day hike for Marie Curie Charity. Amazing views and people! Just need to prep gear, snacks, take all your rubhish with you, observe the byelaws and remember to use toilets!

Wonderful SW wilderness, fantastic breathing space at any time of year. WW boating, climbing, mountain biking, trail running, hiking and wild camping. Such a magical place
Tim O — Google review
Spectacular place, so much to see and do, if you like Tors, desolate moors, valleys with trees, reservoirs, lakes, streams, rivers and woods, then this is the place for you. Wonderful to see all the Dartmoor ponies and foals, cattle and sheep roaming free. Loads of walks from easy, to moderate, to hard ones, so many different Tors to see.. Lots of cycling tracks, and areas to go horse riding. The scenery is breathtaking. Plenty of pubs along the route to stop at for food and drink. Places to stop for picnics as so many car parks all over the moors. Stunning little villages around too. Well worth a visit.

Every time I visit England, I always love going back to Dartmoor. I first came here as a child, and it’s just as beautiful now as I remember. The hikes are great, whether you want an easy walk or something more challenging, and the scenery is stunning. Seeing the wild ponies and the wide open moors always makes it feel special. It’s one of those places I never get tired of visiting.
Sarah — Google review
I love this place with all my heart. I’ve walked across the moors countless times, and every time I go, it’s better than the last. Standing on top of Haytor Rocks feels like nature itself is running through my body like lightning.
Billy B — Google review
Wild, slightly windswept, exposed, grassy, treeless, and a lot of cute horses. Reminds me a lot of Forest of Bowland in Lancashire, but of course, with the granite, it is its own beast. The views are expansive, and it shuttles you between a handful of high, bumpy plateaus, then short fast dips into verdant hedgerowed hamlets, then back into windswept plateaus again. Perfect countryside for bike riding, and hopefully the suggested speed limits on the road are adhered to, as the straight roads do seem to encourage wild driving at times. I love the big descent down Pork Hill to Tavistock, and the one down to Exeter - and of course they are for great ascents too, nice and steady. Come to see the cute Dartmoor Ponies too - they’re very short and quite timid, like Shetlands without the attitude problems. but treat them with care, they still need to feel wild, not domesticated.

Beautiful scenery, clean and endless. Walking the moors on a clear day is fantastic 🤩

Lots of stalls undercover surrounded by cafes and independent shops. Great for unique gifts, food and vintage stores. Lots of choice of places to eat and Tavistock is full of history so a great day out

Lovely selection of local, artisan and other produce. Probably something for everyone. Liverpool beat the town centre, and the couch. We were serenaded by the bells. Close vicinity to lots of other shops and eateries. Very friendly.
Andrew S — Google review
Really enjoyed rooting through local (ish) produce and crafts on a rainy Saturday pm. If you think this town was originally an Anglo Saxon market town, nice to know it's still community focused. Tavistock more broadly punches above it's weight for a small town: great cafes, book shops and small artisan retailers. Also, great drives across the moor to get to it from any direction!

Beautiful town, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Birthplace of Sir Francis Drake. Thriving community.

Traditional Market. Good selection of stalls.

The Pannier Market in Tavistock is a true gem—full of charm, history, and friendly faces. Housed in a beautiful Victorian building, it offers a wonderful mix of stalls selling everything from local produce and artisan foods to unique crafts, antiques, and gifts. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a lovely sense of community. It’s the perfect place to browse, chat with stallholders, and pick up something special while enjoying the character of this historic market town.

Beautiful garden fantastic snow drop collection. Friendly staff. Excellent range of food in the café and good coffee. Well worth a visit will be going again.
Alex H — Google review
We've got a season ticket which is worth it as we live locally and visit every few weeks. So we can see the garden in all seasons. If you like pretty flowers spring and summer are the best time . Very much a plants man's garden, the labeling is very good. The cafe is well worth a visit, excellent range of cakes, good coffee, pasties, baked potatoes and enormous scones. Free WiFi, good for looking up the plants you've spotted. the phone signal in the garden is poor.
Nick C — Google review
An amazing garden, not like any other garden i have visited. Most of the various areas of the garden are open planting ie not formal beds and are spectacular in appearance. There is a walled garden which is of the more conventional style, and a small arboretum area, but the majority is absolutely magnificent open planting. There are clearly marked paths which are suitable for wheelchair users. Many little seating areas where you can overlook the vistas. It has a small cafe which serves light meals between 11.00 and 2.00 and cakes and drinks from 10.30 to 4.30. Well worth a visit, it is expensive, but worth it to see a different style of garden.
Ian F — Google review
We visited here on a recommendation and were so pleased that we did. Stunning gardens in June; wildflowers and naturalistic planting, beautiful trees, trails, and open spaces. The walled garden was very pretty and it wasn't too busy when we went. I should imagine it constantly changes through the seasons but always remains peaceful and beautiful. There is a nice little cafe offering some welcome shade and refreshments. Good coffee and v nice cake. Highly recommended.

Absolutely phenomenal ly beautiful!! Can't wait to go back. The colours of the hydrangeas were amazing, and the walled garden, well, wow !!

The Cornish Arms is a charming inn located in the heart of Tavistock, known for its vintage-style rooms and suites. Following a complete transformation in 2013 by St Austell Brewery, this establishment has evolved into an elegant gastropub with a focus on providing top-notch offerings. The menu features a wide range of dishes, from simple classics to more elaborate fare, accompanied by an impressive selection of drinks.
Nice venue, with comfortable atmosphere. We didn't book and were easily able to sit in the bar for dinner around 7:30 on a sunday evening. Really excellent vegan menu, the selection was great, with some very interesting options and delicious onion rings. The desserts were really special and we left absolutely stuffed and very happy.
Phily — Google review
Stayed overnight at the Cornish Arms have there own car park and rear of pub. Rooms are good size and well furnished, well equipped modern bathroom with walk in rainfall shower. Only downside is WiFi a little lacking keeps on dropping out. We ate in the restaurant and the food was really very good and the service was top notch. The included breakfast was not massive but very good quality and again service was excellent. So all in all a really great place would definitely stay there again.
James T — Google review
I've been here a couple of times now and both times were great experiences. The latest meal (for four of us) was excellent, all of us had different dishes and all were good. The service is attentive but sensible. The atmosphere is good, a gentle buzz with plenty of diners even though we sat down really early (6pm on a Wednesday out of season). Not cheap, but very good value still. We'd come back for sure.
Phil D — Google review
Cannot rate this hotel highly enough. It fully deserves it's position in the Sunday Times top 50 best Gastropubs. The rooms, food and service are all so good. It was a chance booking but what a find. To cap everything else off to have it's own parking space for every room while in such a central location is amazing. This is a true gem of a find.
Fiona H — Google review
Had a lovely vegan dinner here. It was great to have an entirely separate menu so we could easily see what we could eat. The options were interesting and absolutely delicious and included a sticky toffee pudding (!!!!!) It was a random and damp Thursday evening but the restaurant was busy, with a lovely atmosphere, music at the right level, good buzz but tables are far enough apart that you can hear each other. Fantastic service from everyone - professional and efficient but really friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Kate H — Google review
Went here on the back of a recommendation. I can honestly say that the whole experience was outstanding. It’s not cheap but it shouldn’t be. The food and service was excellent. Some things are worth spending money on. This is one. 5 star and the best meal and service I think I’ve ever had.
Crowder211 — Google review
Wow what great pub. Chose it for its food primarily and what a great choice. Definitely the best fish and chips I've ever had, and the beers were good too! Nice friendly staff and locals who made you feel welcome . Downside is parking, yes it's there if you're staying, but not too much bother to park in a public car park. I'd definitely return if in the area

Stayed for a night before a wedding. Due to traffic we arrived quite late but the staff kept the kitchen open for us. Everything was wonderful food, staff and location. Lovely friendly place and our room was amazing. Definitely be back.

Restaurant
Taylors in Tavistock is a trendy and unique eatery that offers a mix of delicious cuisine and a fashionable atmosphere. This contemporary venue has an eclectic and welcoming feel, combining the old with the new. It's a family-run establishment that serves inspired menus, homemade cakes, fresh coffee, and classic cocktails. The restaurant also offers afternoon tea with a fantastic array of loose-leaf brews and delightful bakes accompanied by upbeat playlists.
High quality food in a lovely atmosphere. This is one of the places to go for food in Tavistock. It's got a high quality menu, served with enthusiasm and great presentation. Book, as it gets full, especially on the weekend. You will not be disappointed 👍 Their tapas starters for the evening meals are well worth exploring. Mains are likewise an interesting variety of complementary flavours, with high quality presentation. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for - an investment your palate will appreciate!

Superb breakfast! Great menu and perfectly cooked! Love it here.
James A — Google review
I went to Taylors with friends to have lunch. Even though we came a little late at around 2pm, they still allowed us to order food. Their potato and leek soup was delicious and so was steak and ale pie. The service was very friendly and fast. This is definitely an excellent place to grab lunch.
Slava K — Google review
Waitress team friendly and polite. Some of the kitchen team need to remember that they work in an open kitchen and that customers can see them and (most apparent for this visit) that they can also hear them. Calamari starter was lovely and they have made it their own. Rib-eye steak lacked wow factor on first look and was backed up but being over cooked- medium well but was ordered medium rare 😔 Slaw was tasty but mushroom rubbery. Dessert was lovely and they did their best the make it a slightly bigger portion as we were sharing and to apologise for what was overheard in the kitchen. Would love to come back if the place and staff take a more professional approach to the job.
Georgia M — Google review
Taylor's serves delicious food and us situated in a great central location in Tavistock. The Sunday roast was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. We also ordered wine and a delicious desert. The staff and owners are super friendly. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to locals and visitors.
Massimo B — Google review
A friend and I decided to meet at Taylors for lunch today and what a good decision that was! The restaurant changed ownership recently and it has improved considerably since then. In fact it's now my first choice for morning coffee or lunch in Tavistock. We both had the sourdough sandwiches and they were delicious and beautifully presented. I decided on the smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich and my friend had the ham, mustard, gherkin and tomato sandwich. If you're looking for a nice atmosphere in which to have breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner you really can't beat Taylors. The staff are friendly, the seating is comfortable and food is excellent! Thanks to all concerned. Give it a try and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Sue O — Google review
A good place to eat with kids as they have a larger-than-usual children's menu. And the food for grown-ups is very decent too. It's always easy to mess up a full English breakfast but theirs is spot-on. Friendly service too. Recommended
Christopher M — Google review
We had dinner for two this evening, some starters, drinks and mains with a bottle of wine. The starters calamari, white bait and scallops were very tasty, well cooked and seasoned. The roasted supreme chicken fulfilled all high expectations set by the name - very good. The best: Surprisingly there was no lamb on the menu, nevertheless the chef created a delicious lamb rump dish on request. Lovely! The wine was good, value for money overall very good. We liked the atmosphere upstairs the most. Thanks to the Taylors service team and chef!! An unforgettable experience, 👉highly recommended.

Very impressed with this cafe, food was lovely, service was good. Whilst we were there a gentleman fell outside, banging his head, and hurting himself. He was bleeding and disorientated. He wasn't a customer, but nevertheless the staff sprang into action with first aid and attention. They couldn't have done more for him, they even drove him to hospital!! What a lovely group of people and a lovely place to eat ❤️

Great service and a lovely location to stop for lunch. At least a couple of our group left hungry. The food was nice but we just didn't feel there was enough of it.
Alex S — Google review
This is our local Coffee shop, we now default to this over any other. Highly recommended, lovely staff. Admittedly we are quite regular customers now, it has gotten to the point our order is predictable. Highly recommend the combination of Cheesy Chips and medium oat mocha (1 shot oat latte and 2 shot oat mocha pictured). Vegan options for those with dietary restrictions etc as well, and will modify the strength of coffees should you have any issues with caffeine. Parking is available either long stay for 4hrs at £2 or shorter stay for around the same at the nearby Russell Street. Hi to Natasha, Rachel and the gang, see you in the week (work allowing :3)

Found this lovely place after walking the length of the canal, after an earlier walk up to Brentor church and desperate for a good coffee!! Received a very warm welcome and sat upstairs on a very comfy sofa. The coffee was very good, just wished we could have eaten but had a huge breakfast at our b&b that morning. Will be revisiting

Indian restaurant
The Ganges Restaurant in Tavistock is a vibrant and popular Indian restaurant that offers a culinary adventure with its delicious and aromatic Indian cuisine. The warm ambience and tantalizing aromas greet you as soon as you step inside, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
We are so pleased we found this place, the best Indian in Tavistock, in our opinion, Flavoursome food and quick service. Would recommend
Harriet P — Google review
Beautiful ambience, the soft music and decor is cool. The waiters were polite. Naan bread was very nice, the mushroom rice can be better. Rogan Josh was really good. Prawn curry was just there, I wasn't impressed with it. Papadums were really nice, with the mint sauce & mango chutney. The sparkling lemonade was really good too, would be better with a little vodka 😉 The wait time after ordering was about 30-40mins+ that's too long for me. Lovely place really, next time I'll just do takeout because the cost of eating in is like x2 of takeout.
Esther T — Google review
Australian tourists in Tavistock. The Indian was different than we are used to but was excellent . We enjoyed everything we ordered. We ordered two naan but should have ordered one as they were huge. A big thumbs up from us.

Best Indian around, we drive from Callington fur a takeaway. Nothing compares!
Sarah J — Google review
Inedible swill is the best word to describe this place! Went to this place after seeing such good reviews, but im sorry if you've ever had a half decent curry you'd know this doesn't even deserve the one star! Curry has been heated up repeatedly and what you are served is the thick burnt bits that are left at the end. Chicken was STALE, tandoori is not supposed to have a hard coat outside it similar to stale baguette that go on sale for 12p on the day they are to go off. They charged £3.30 for a saucer sized plate of rice, there's no point. Please just stay home and have a plate of £1.50 uncle Ben's rice, it will taste better and be of better quality. Please avoid and go to a REAL curry place.
Tania B — Google review
We had takeaway from here while visiting Tavistock and it was excellent. The chicken tikka in the curries was cooked beautifully and everything was extremely tasty and well spiced. Ordered online and our order was ready when we went to collect. Excellent!

My boyfriend and I have just driven down to Devon and have never been in this area. Usually I’m not a huge fan of Indian, but it was 10:30pm and options were slimming. We walked in here and were welcomed by smiles, the place was empty so we chose our seats and experienced a very good service and some of the best Indian food we have eaten. We had the butter chicken and prawn masala. Just fantastic. Seriously though, the waiter couldn’t have been more perfect with his service. I travel all over the world and go to such a variety of restaurants and experience so much, I was a chef in the past and a food taster for a huge concierge company. I am fussy, it takes a lot to impress me, so very well done guys. We will be back!!! Thank you.

The Horn of Plenty is a charming country house hotel with stunning valley views and an acclaimed restaurant. Situated in the Tamar Valley, it offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by five acres of gardens. The hotel is dog-friendly, making it perfect for exploring the nearby Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Dartmoor National Park.
I went with my husband and our two kids to The Horn of Plenty and our experience was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the spacious rooms, which offer a comfortable and elegant space for a relaxing stay. The views from the hotel are simply breathtaking, with landscapes that leave you speechless and make every moment special. Jeremy, the owner, and all the staff, Everet, Sarah and the waitress, did an incredible job making us feel welcome and cared for throughout our visit. Their attention to detail and warmth really make a difference. The cuisine at this hotel is top-notch. The dishes they serve are exquisite, with flavors that delight the palate and impeccable presentation. It’s a truly exclusive place that combines luxury, comfort, and a memorable culinary experience. I highly recommend The Horn of Plenty to anyone looking for a special getaway in a beautiful setting with exceptional service. We will definitely return! Pet friendly and kids are always welcome. We recently had our wedding here and I just want to thank Shirna and all her staff that were involved in making our day truely special. We count ourselves very lucky to have been married in such a lovely hotel, set in such beautiful surroundings. All the food was wonderful throughout our stay, and we are also very grateful to the chef for arranging the rice dishes for a more Filipino friendly breakfast. You were all fantastic and I have no doubt we'll be seeing you again on our anniversary.

Love this place. Our second visit here. Dog friendly which was great. They left a bowl, towel and treats for the dog in the room and he's allowed to pad around the gardens. Great rooms. We were in the dog friendly coach house conversion. Fantastic food. Supper never disappoints. Fantastic views from the terrace with a glass of wine and then supper overlooking the valley. Breakfast was delicious but service not so great and buffet items not replenished. Had to keep asking for things. Otherwise fantastic.

Always amazing food and great service in such a nice atmosphere and location. Food is always presented beautifully and the chefs obviously appreciate and love what they do because the food is exceptional and every course has a distinct unique experience that makes you want more. The wine selection is also great so all that’s left is to have a few cognac’s .. 5*

We recently celebrated a 90th birthday here with a family group of mixed ages. We’ve been a few times and the views from the restaurant are amazing. Unfortunately the portion sizes have been slashed and we were all hungry again within an hour or two - not great considering the price. The service was also poor - our waitress seemed to be new and managed to waste at least a glass of champagne in opening the bottle and spilling it when pouring - they offered no complementary glass as compensation. The manager also commented that the reception area was “turning into a kindergarten” as we walked our baby around to keep him occupied. All in all, a disappointing experience from a formerly excellent eatery. Try the Cornish Arms instead!

We recently had our wedding at The Horn of Plenty and it truly exceeded all of our expectations. From the breathtaking views to the flawless service, everything about the day was perfect. The venue itself is stunning, set in the heart of the countryside, and offers an elegant blend of a country house with modern touches. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and while we had our ceremony indoors due to the weather, we were able to make full use of the outside space when it cleared up. The scenery made for some amazing photos, and our guests couldn’t stop commenting on how picturesque the surroundings were. The whole atmosphere was relaxed yet incredibly refined - a beautiful mix of rustic charm and sophistication. A massive thank you to Shrina and Jess, who were absolutely fantastic throughout the entire wedding planning process. They were so helpful, attentive, and calm during the lead-up to the wedding, which was honestly a lifesaver with all the planning stress. We had a few personal touches we wanted to add, like custom signage and signature cocktails for our celebration drinks, and they were more than happy to accept our ideas and guide us on the best way to incorporate them. The staff at The Horn of Plenty were wonderful, polite, professional, and accommodating. We felt supported every step of the way, and the team’s attention to detail made our entire wedding weekend smooth and memorable. All of our guests had an amazing time, which was such a relief! Where do I even start with the food? It was incredible. The process of creating our menu with the chef was one of our favorite parts of the planning. They really listened to our preferences and ensured that everything, from the canapés to the three-course meal, paired beautifully. We loved that we had the opportunity to try everything beforehand, which allowed us to truly enjoy the flavors on the day without any wedding-day chaos taking over. Our guests are still raving about the food months later, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for anything better. The evening food went down a treat too! Being able to choose that too was a great touch and helped us craft the perfect experience for everyone. All the rooms at The Horn of Plenty were lovely, clean, spacious and perfect for our guests who stayed overnight. It was clear the venue really took pride in making sure everyone was comfortable. The breakfast the next morning was a real highlight, with plenty of options that satisfied everyone’s needs after a long night of celebration. The Horn of Plenty made our wedding day everything we could have dreamed of and more. From the stunning setting and seamless service to the unforgettable food and drink, it was a truly magical experience. The team went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect, and we can’t thank them enough for making our special day so extraordinary. If you’re looking for a venue that offers a mix of elegance, charm, and exceptional service, we wholeheartedly recommend The Horn of Plenty. It was even better than we could have imagined, absolutely perfect!
