Corderie Royale offers an intriguing experience centered around rope making. Visitors can enjoy an audio walking tour, which is considered a great value and provides insight into the grounds. The site's appeal extends to families, offering an engaging experience for children. Despite its association with rope production, the museum is smaller than before but still features captivating demonstrations such as the rope node demonstration.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Give it a couple of hours and make sure you watch the interactive video at the beginning using the headphones if your French isn’t that great. The place was clean, all of the displays worked and the staff were friendly.

Who knew rope making would be so interesting. Do not miss the audio walking tour, the don't advertise it much, but it's really good value and a good way to discover the grounds. Good for kids too. Not as ropey as you would expect. Get it? Because they make ropes?
Will B — Google review
Great visit, the museum is smaller than in the past but the rope node demonstration was great. Take a tour at the accro-mats which is great

During my time in Rochefort for the Chess Festival, I was fortunate to find moments between rounds to explore the charming surroundings near the Convention Center. Rochefort's rich maritime heritage was on full display — from the historic ship Hermione docked nearby, to the majestic Corderie Royale and the graceful gate of the Arsenal. Strolling along the tranquil Charente River was especially relaxing after a day of intense concentration over the chessboard. The blend of history, nature, and calm atmosphere made these short walks feel like hidden rewards amidst a competitive trip. I left Rochefort with not only chess memories but also a deeper appreciation for this elegant riverside town.

Bridges
As the day winds down in Rochefort, a unique and fascinating attraction awaits: the Pont Transbordeur. This remarkable transborder bridge, designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, connects the two shores of the Charente River between Rochefort and Echillais. Recently restored, it stands as the sole operational ferry bridge in France designated as a Historical Monument. This exceptional structure is one of only seven of its kind worldwide.
It's important to look beyond what you see in front of you. We had parked the car and walked to the crossing, had an excellent lunch and saw the cycle repair and charging, so went to get our bikes and then cycled into Rochefort. Watching from the view point gives you a better idea of the Victorian engineering. You just want to give the pontoon a little push to see if would swing which of course it never will. Boutique and excellent toilet facilities for all.
Colin S — Google review
The only surviving bridge of its kind in France, the unique Pont Transbordeur du Martrou, built between 1898 and 1900 and now listed as a Monument Historique. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. We have been past it a few times, and finally decided to check it out. Much bigger when you are up close.
SJ M — Google review
Only way we could find to get across the river on a bike. Great experience to use an historic piece of transport. Very well maintained, helpful multi lingual staff.
B A — Google review
A marvellous piece of engineering that solved the problem of many vehicles crossing the river without an expensive bridge. One of only 6 in the world. Now operated by modern cable winches. Free bicycle repair stations before the crossing with tools you might need attached by cables.
Ewan B — Google review
We have watched the renovations over a number of years. In 2022 we got to ride on the finished bridge. We can certainly recommend that the cycle ride from Rocheforta Aire to the bridge is a good visit. Public toilets and a restaurant are also now completed on the Rochefort side.
Rob R — Google review
Very interesting, never been to a transporter bridge. Worth a visit if you are interested in the engineering. Nice restaurant on one side of the river.
Anthony B — Google review
Very beautiful bridge, Is worth to pay a visit. The museum is small but interesting and it's free.
Zetaeerrebii — Google review
This was one of the best things we did in the Charente region. You can park for free and ride the bridge on foot over the river and back in the gondola. They run about every 15 minutes. On the other side is a museum about the bridge construction and renovations, that was excellent. The little cafe has an observation deck on top and there is souvenir shop. Very good value.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the nostalgia of early 20th-century shops at Musée des Commerces d'autrefois. The museum spans four floors, featuring faithfully reconstructed apothecaries, grocers, bistros, and even a classroom with wooden desks and inkwells. Visitors can indulge in childhood memories or reminisce about their grandparents' era while exploring the richly arranged objects.
Very nice place, gave many reminders

Association Hermione La Fayette is a majestic flagship that showcases the work of a boatswain. Visitors can experience the rigging by trying out the Accro-Mats, offering a unique opportunity to reach great heights. The Royal Ropery, an impressive 374m tall building, is also worth exploring. Rochefort itself is steeped in history, with reminders of Lafayette and Napoleon at every turn.
Magnifique. A great reason to visit Rochefort. Hermione is nothing else than a piece of art, a volunteering effort, a very passionate crew. Thank you all for reviving the history thru this glorious ship and letting us the visitors to enjoy it. A must see in this part of France.

Beautoful ship, too bad they were fixing it when we came so we couldn't see the whole of it. Also, everything is in French - no English translation
Tina P — Google review
Disappointing! No boat! At least not that we could see. Lots of interesting sub-museums each with own entry fee > €10 Made the mistake of arriving and looking at the town first with cafe in lovely square only to find that the museums were all closing in half an hour for a 2 hour lunch! Decided to go the Leclerc and go back to the caravan. Was so good had lunch in the supermarket if that isn’t sad! Great sandwich beer and wine. Rochefort - tick!!
Stephen W — Google review
We had a wander round in the mid-afternoon, it was great to see a tall ship that had clearly been lovingly reconstructed. Unfortunately, partly due to the size of our group, the cost of guided tours were a little more than we were willing to stomach. However, just the setting it's in and the surrounding area is well worth a look.

Stunning place. The Versailles of the maritime world. So glad we made the effort to visit. The city is small and delightful. A place for a culture fix for sure.
Andreas G — Google review
Rochefort surprised me as a so historical town. At each street corner an old place reminds you Lafayette, Napoleon or other war part of French naval history. The Hermione is a so large vessel, impressive with the masts, the inside deck, .... all is so fantastic a must see... and what is you are lucky to see her taking the see
Arnaud C — Google review
An amazing place to visit, plenty to do and see and explore. Take your time and stay a whole day to explore it.

Beautiful boat, what a pity that they don't have English information. Also, they could perhaps change the tents and have some permanent building. The temperature in the tents was unbearable.

Seafood restaurant
Located at 1 Quai Joseph Bellot, 17300 Rochefort, France, Restaurant Le Cap Nell offers a contemporary dining experience with picturesque views of the marina. The restaurant is known for its delectable oysters, traditional fish soups, and seafood platters. Despite its average rating on Google Maps, visitors have praised the restaurant for its impeccable hygiene standards and reasonable pricing for lunch meals.
During my stay in Rochefort in late Feb, I had the pleasure of dining multiple times at Restaurant Le Cap Nell. As a solo traveler, I found it to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable dining experiences of my trip. Among the various dishes I tried, the fresh oysters and the desserts stood out the most — absolutely delightful and a true highlight of coastal French cuisine. The steak was also excellent, although once it was cooked slightly more than my original request. Nevertheless, the overall culinary quality and attention to detail made every meal a pleasure. The restaurant offers a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere, perfect for savoring a leisurely meal by the harbor. The set menu, priced around €30, represented outstanding value for the quality of food, service, and ambiance. One charming quirk to note: the opening hours can be a little unpredictable — on one occasion, I returned eagerly for another meal, only to find the doors closed! It seems that to enjoy such wonderful food, a little luck and good timing are part of the adventure — very French, and all part of the experience. Overall, Restaurant Le Cap Nell delivers a delightful, authentic taste of Rochefort hospitality. 🌟 I look forward to returning, and highly recommend it to fellow travelers seeking both great seafood and a touch of charming spontaneity!

Nice spot for lunch, good atmosphere, friendly staff & the food was good. We shared escargot & I had the burger, cooked saignant, Dad had rognons tagliatelles. Both too full for dessert.
Fi S — Google review
Excellent restaurant to enjoy fresh seafood either inside or the terrace close to the harbor. Little hint for those that plan having dinner during summer time, don't forget to apply some Autan Spray as there are lots of mosquitos searching for food as well 😊👍🏻
Holger B — Google review
A great river side restaurant really fitting when visiting the town, especially if you are a fish and seafood lover! The menu offers mainly fish dishes, the children menu is limited but there are a few meat dishes and salads are also available. The prices are reasonable (22 euros for a starters and main) and the service was excellent!!

Restaurant
Vivre[S] Par Grégory Coutanceau is an excellent restaurant located on the harbor of Rochefort, offering a stunning view. The service provided is top-notch, and the prices are very reasonable, particularly for their 3-course lunch or dinner priced at 31 euros. The food is of high quality and cooked in an open kitchen using wood fire.
Great restaurant with a very nice view, just on the port of Rochefort. Service was very good! Prices were very good, especially the 3 course lunch or dinner for 31 euros! Good quality food, prepared in an open kitchen, on wood fire! Our starter with quinoa and pork cheeks pate was delicious! Their strawberry and chocolate and fromage blanc mousse was just perfect! The main course with lieu noir and the fried panisse lacked acidity and some freshness, it was bland and heavy. But overall it's worth the whole experience. Also their wine catalogue is very good and huge!
Natasa B — Google review
I dined at Ripaille - Vivre[S] twice during my trip to Rochefort for the Chess Festival, and both evenings turned out to be among the most memorable meals of my journey. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with beautifully presented dishes, balanced flavors, and attentive service — impressive on both visits. The ambiance is elegant yet welcoming, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a quiet evening alone. The staff were professional and accommodating, and the menu had enough variety to make my second visit just as exciting as the first. Especially on a Sunday, when many restaurants in town are closed, Ripaille was open and operating with full excellence. That reliability, combined with the quality of the food, makes this restaurant a standout in Rochefort. I would happily return if I visit the town again.
Alfred N — Google review
I found the atmosphere a little cold and impersonal. This place could do with some more intimate lights. Service was friendly but felt a little rushed at moments. The food was good, though the gravlax was not really gravlax, the risotto could have hade more cheese to enhance the flavour and sadly came with only three scallops. Overall we enjoyed our dinner, but we felt the price a little high for the entire experience.
Corinna O — Google review
Having dined with you many times over the years we found the new menu and the new cuisine distinctly second-rate. There was no seafood apart from two items of this in an area plentiful with seafood. Main course was average but mediocre and there was only one cheese available. But the price was absurdly high for what we ate. We will not be going back and it is a shame because the reputation you had took a long time to achieve and in our eyes you have lost it. Not worthy of a chef with your reputation
David B — Google review
We enjoyed our lunch very much. Service was simply perfect - just attentive enough without being overbearing. The weekly menu was very tasty and fresh. But the view over the harbour and Charente river from the restaurant is the star of the show. It makes me wants to come back. And I will.

The staff were great company, the meal we had was a delight, despite the added attention of the outdoor friendly wasps.. but I guess you get used to that.. great to eat outside, getting used to being on the continent!

With a warm atmosphere and attentive service, this eatery offers an impressive variety of dishes that cater to both young and old palates alike. The menu features classic French cuisine with generous portions, ensuring everyone leaves satisfied.
Excellent meal. Lovely location. The menu is a bit too long & but very good. the highlight though was the waiter, Didier - unbelievable efficiency!

Excellent place for a family dinner. Portions are very generous and food is well cooked and presented. Menu is varied to take in older and younger folks. We had a lovely meal and would definitely come back. Good selection of wines by the glass including some upscale bottles which are decently priced. For a 5 star I would expect a bit more finesse in the kitchen, which is good but quite traditional in its preparations.

(Translated by Google) Pleasant, cozy restaurant with a small outdoor terrace in the backyard. Friendly welcome and service (a bit of a wait between the main course and dessert ordering). Well-stocked plates and generous ice cream. First small downside: for the price, the floating island could be homemade. Second downside: the taste and texture of the galette itself are a far cry from the galettes eaten in their region of origin. It's a good restaurant; perhaps the pizzas are tastier; you be the judge.
