Disappointing! No boat! At least not that we could see. Lots of interesting sub-museums each with own entry fee > €10 Made the mistake of arriving and looking at the town first with cafe in lovely square only to find that the museums were all closing in half an hour for a 2 hour lunch! Decided to go the Leclerc and go back to the caravan. Was so good had lunch in the supermarket if that isn’t sad! Great sandwich beer and wine. Rochefort - tick!!

We had a wander round in the mid-afternoon, it was great to see a tall ship that had clearly been lovingly reconstructed. Unfortunately, partly due to the size of our group, the cost of guided tours were a little more than we were willing to stomach. However, just the setting it's in and the surrounding area is well worth a look.

Stunning place. The Versailles of the maritime world. So glad we made the effort to visit. The city is small and delightful. A place for a culture fix for sure.

Rochefort surprised me as a so historical town. At each street corner an old place reminds you Lafayette, Napoleon or other war part of French naval history. The only surviving bridge of its kind in France, the unique Pont Transbordeur du Martrou, built between 1898 and 1900 and now listed as a Monument Historique. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. We have been past it a few times, and finally decided to check it out. Much bigger when you are up close.

Only way we could find to get across the river on a bike. Great experience to use an historic piece of transport. Very well maintained, helpful multi lingual staff.

A marvellous piece of engineering that solved the problem of many vehicles crossing the river without an expensive bridge. One of only 6 in the world. Now operated by modern cable winches. Free bicycle repair stations before the crossing with tools you might need attached by cables.

We have watched the renovations over a number of years. In 2022 we got to ride on the finished bridge. We can certainly recommend that the cycle ride from Rocheforta Aire to the bridge is a good visit. Public toilets and a restaurant are also now completed on the Rochefort side.

This was one of the best things we did in the Charente region. You can park for free and ride the bridge on foot over the river and back in the gondola. They run about every 15 minutes. On the other side is a museum about the bridge construction and renovations, that was excellent. The little cafe has an observation deck on top and there is souvenir shop. Very good value.

This place is run by an elderly couple and oh my word do they deliver. Like mamma mia, this is some real deal crepes. Came here for lunch and it was absolutely divine! Super tasty with fresh ingredients with the crepe itself being crazy good. One of the best crepes i have had in a loooong time.

I spent both Friday and Saturday evening enjoying the location, good food and service at this restaurant. On the Friday we sat down as a group of five people (although we are 16 in total) and members of our group arrived in some cases over 40 minutes later when some of us had already eaten. The restaurant staff accommodated this very easily and without a problem. On the Saturday evening (we had forgotten to make a reservation) we turned up as a whole group of 16 people and within a couple of minutes the staff moved tables around and created enough space for us all to eat together. The service was first class and the staff were helpful in explaining what the food was in English to those members of the group who needed help. A sad, sad situation. It looks nice, a terrace on the main city square…, but they misuse the situation to charge a lot and do whatever they want. They asked us if we wanted to eat something, we said yes. When we ordered, they took away our placemat, cutlery and glasses because crepes and waffles didn’t count as food (?). The food is horrible. Ordered an Entrecote and it was the worst i ever had. Was a piece of cooked old cow. Cesars salad has nothing to do with what you call a cesars salad. One star is to much.

Not a terrible service but food was incredibly underwhelming. My girlfriend and I both ordered their pasta dishes (she had Carbonara and I had the Pesto). The pasta was unfortunately overcooked, causing it to break during the regular mixing routine. As if that’s not bad enough, my plate looked all white and dry after a careful stir. I had to request more pesto sauce and olive oil to bring some fluidity to the dish. It was still too bad to eat after my best effort to make it so (which includes downpours of salt and pepper). I dined at Ripaille - Vivre[S] twice during my trip to Rochefort for the Chess Festival, and both evenings turned out to be among the most memorable meals of my journey. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with beautifully presented dishes, balanced flavors, and attentive service — impressive on both visits. The ambiance is elegant yet welcoming, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a quiet evening alone. The staff were professional and accommodating, and the menu had enough variety to make my second visit just as exciting as the first. Especially on a Sunday, when many restaurants in town are closed, Ripaille was open and operating with full excellence. That reliability, combined with the quality of the food, makes this restaurant a standout in Rochefort. I would happily return if I visit the town again.

I found the atmosphere a little cold and impersonal. This place could do with some more intimate lights. Service was friendly but felt a little rushed at moments. The food was good, though the gravlax was not really gravlax, the risotto could have hade more cheese to enhance the flavour and sadly came with only three scallops. Overall we enjoyed our dinner, but we felt the price a little high for the entire experience.

Having dined with you many times over the years we found the new menu and the new cuisine distinctly second-rate. There was no seafood apart from two items of this in an area plentiful with seafood. Main course was average but mediocre and there was only one cheese available. But the price was absurdly high for what we ate. We will not be going back and it is a shame because the reputation you had took a long time to achieve and in our eyes you have lost it. Not worthy of a chef with your reputation

We enjoyed our lunch very much. Service was simply perfect - just attentive enough without being overbearing. The weekly menu was very tasty and fresh. But the view over the harbour and Charente river from the restaurant is the star of the show. It makes me wants to come back. And I will.

The staff were great company, the meal we had was a delight, despite the added attention of the outdoor friendly wasps.. but I guess you get used to that.. great to eat outside, getting used to being on the continent!
