Wachau, a UNESCO-listed valley in Lower Austria, is a picturesque river valley known for its terraced vineyards, ancient monasteries, and fortresses. The region's romantic appeal lies in its ruined medieval castles like Durnstein, which once held Richard the Lionheart captive during the Crusades. Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a 40km bike trail along the Danube from Melk to Krems, passing through charming villages.
The wachau valley is beautiful and even in autumn. The vineyards are going golden and the sunlight on the steep sides is dramatic.

We experienced a section of the Wachau World Heritage Trail — the vast farmlands inspired a sense of awe.

We cycled through the Wachau from Lunz to Vienna. It was simply the most beautiful area. The best cycle ride of my life.

Have now traversed the Wachau Valley 3 times whilst cruising on the Danube, and still spot new sights on every visit, The scenery is magnificent, mountain landscapes, fascinating villages, and castle ruins throughout. A place I will visit again and again. See it whilst cruising with a glass of local wine, then return with a bike to see it in more detail.

Loved visiting the Wachau valley which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Upon taking a cruise on river Danube you get to see vineyards and so many castles on hill tops. The waters are crystal blue and make up for a gorgeous view.

Dürnstein Castle, a picturesque hilltop fortress dating back to the 12th century, is a must-see attraction in Durnstein. Offering stunning panoramic views of the Danube River, this medieval stronghold is an iconic landmark in the town. Visitors can explore the historic center with its charming cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, as well as enjoy wine tasting sessions at local wineries nestled amidst mesmerizing vineyards.
A very atmospheric place! There are several paths leading up to the ruins, which is quite convenient. The view of the Danube is simply wow. Bright green lizards crawl everywhere — so beautiful, it’s like they’re there just for the photos! It feels like stepping into a fairytale from the Middle Ages. I highly recommend it for a walk and unforgettable impressions. 🦎

The village is pretty, the castle is a bit steep climb. Didn't go all the way as we were there on a hot day with a kid. But went close enough to take a few pictures
Afzal H — Google review
I love me some history. Great views. After a hike up the hill you're rewarded with panoramic views. A must do in my opinion
Tyron W — Google review
We visited there whilst on a Scenic River cruise. It is a solid walk up the hill from the village. Steps are uneven and in some parts no steps at all. Wear good footwear. Once on top. The Veiws are sensational and the walk is well and truly worth it. Look at the cell where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned for some time during the crusades.

Amazing place, full of history - from the 12th century, and famous for having captive Richard the Lionheart - he was captured on his way back to England from the Holy Crusades. View of the Wachau Valley and Danube River. Wear good shoes as path is steep and rocky. Not for prams or wheelchairs. Full of tourists during the Spring (especially when it is apricot bloom season) and also summer.

I took a day trip out of Vienna to dürensteinand and I loved the castle. It's about 20-30 minutes walking to the top of the castle and it's definitely must-do. The view was outstanding, we sitted there for an hour because we didn't want to leave this magical place. Here some pictures
Aviel G — Google review
Although reaching the site takes some time and effort, it is well worth visiting to experience the breath of history. This is where King Richard the Lionheart once stayed. Along the path to the castle, informative installations offer insights into medieval politics and events, with a particular focus on the legendary imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart. Moreover, from the summit, there is an extraordinarily scenic view over the Danube and the charming town of Dürnstein.
Raimonds Ī — Google review
What a fabulous hidden gem. We only learned of this place through a chance encounter with a local in a Vienna bar. The castle well worth a visit for the scenic views and accessible ruins. By 'accessible' I mean it's possible to climb on the walls; there are no safety barriers and access is unrestricted, the steps up the hill require some fitness, but the reward is a beautiful view of the Danube and area.

The blue church in Dürnstein is absolutely stunning. Its bright color makes it stand out in the town. The baroque architecture is elegant and detailed. Inside, the decorations are beautiful and well-preserved. The church has a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. It is a great spot for photography. The location near the river makes it even more picturesque. Visiting this church gives you a sense of the town’s history. The staff there are friendly and informative. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in Dürnstein.

Housed in a stunning 400-year-old vaulted cellar adorned in Biedermeier style, this gem offers an innovative twist on classic Waldviertel dishes. During the summer months, guests can dine al fresco amidst the picturesque orchard, creating an enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of a fairy tale.

Incredible Apple Strudel – Fresh from Their Own Garden! I had the pleasure of trying the apple strudel here, and it was absolutely fantastic! The pastry was perfectly golden and flaky, with a deliciously crisp texture. The apple filling was warm, fragrant, and had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice—made even better by knowing that the apples came from their own garden! The light dusting of powdered sugar and the fresh strawberry garnish added a beautiful finishing touch. You can truly taste the quality and care put into this dessert. If you're a fan of homemade, authentic apple strudel, this is an absolute must-try. Highly recommended!

Nestled in the picturesque Wachau region, Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger is a culinary gem that beautifully marries history with modern gastronomy. Since its opening in 2014, this charming establishment has been delighting guests with its elevated regional cuisine crafted by Maitre Hartmuth Rameder and pastry chef Erwin Windhaber.
Wonderful, great food, well thought menu and wine pairing, loved every dish in the 6-course menu. Really good service as well. Definitely the best restaurant in the region

Elegant dining at Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger A beautiful setting with refined cuisine. The duck was perfectly cooked — tender with crispy skin and rich flavor. The ravioli was delicate, filled with fresh ingredients and served with a flavorful sauce. Impeccable service, a well-curated wine list, and a charming atmosphere make this a must-visit in the Wachau region.

Excellent food!!! Michelin star quality!!! The only downside - the tables outside are close to the street - and it's pretty loud
Jarek K — Google review
This is one of the places I could go on a regular basis for years, without feeling bored. The food is a feast for the eyes and for the palate: the taste, the presentation, the ingredients. No need to mention the exceptional wine from the region. On top of all that, the service is extremely professional and friendly. The price might be way above average, but everything you get in this place is. Absolutely worth it.
Sarineh H — Google review
Brilliant. Prompt table reservation, problem-free parking, close to Danube, garden in the shade of a large tree, natural yet classy feeling, restaurant is in a gently renovated old manor-vineyard-estate (?), the service was friendly despite the objective hustle and full house (perhaps the reason for not noticing empty glasses). We had each of the five-course menu options (up to seven, we skipped the desserts), both were balanced, harmonious, sophisticated, accurately sweet, accurately savory, accurately meaty and vegetable - with an possibility to compose completely meatless menu, a subtle mix of classic and new. truly a very nice experience
Adam M — Google review
Exceptional food - cosy atmosphere - great service Even though we decided very last minute to get lunch and also arrived only 30 minutes before closing time the service was very polite, attentive and patient. We sat in the garden under large trees which created a pleasant atmosphere under the sun and held off the light rain that lasted for a few minutes. The food was excellent - both in taste and also the arrangement. The dessert (a souffle) was especially noteworthy. This is definitely restaurant to remember and revisit - also because the indoor rooms are also very inviting.

Restaurant
Nestled in the picturesque town of Durnstein, Restaurant Richard Löwenherz offers a delightful culinary experience that beautifully marries tradition with modern flair. Surrounded by stunning views of the Danube River and lush gardens, this charming eatery is steeped in local history and legend, particularly that of King Richard the Lionheart. The menu features an array of Austrian dishes with vegetarian options available, showcasing regional specialties like brown trout and delectable apricot dumplings.
Dining Above the Danube – Austrian Classics with a View Perched high above the meander of the Danube, this terrace offers not just sweeping views of history-soaked landscapes and a charming town, but also a true taste of Austrian tradition. It’s one of those places where the setting makes you pause, and the food confirms you’ve chosen well. We sampled three Austrian classics in their natural habitat — and all were executed beautifully. ⸻ Nutritional Hit Parade of Our Choices 1. Fried Chicken with Austrian Potato Salad • Calories: ~750–850 kcal • Protein: Good intake from chicken • Fat: High, mainly from frying oil and breading • Carbs: From potato salad with mustard and onions ➡️ Heavy overall, indulgent but iconic. ⸻ 2. Beef Goulash with Spätzle • Calories: ~850–950 kcal • Protein: High from beef • Fat: Rich due to sauce • Carbs: Spätzle adds a hefty carb load ➡️ Very hearty and filling, a true comfort dish, but heavy on calories and fat. ⸻ 3. Pike-Perch with Tagliatelle and Zucchini • Calories: ~700–750 kcal • Protein: Lean, high-quality protein from fish • Fat: Moderate, mostly healthy fats from sauce/oil • Carbs: Moderate carbs from pasta, balanced with vegetables ➡️ Lighter and more balanced than the fried or saucy meat dishes, but still satisfying. ⸻ Conclusion This was the perfect way to close a three-day trip — local classics enjoyed in a setting that feels timeless. Whether you choose indulgent fried chicken, robust goulash, or the refined balance of pike-perch, the food here matches the grandeur of the view.

Visited the restaurant in Aug 2022 A very nice restaurant with good food and great seating views. We ordered the trout and pork main courses and both were quite delicious. Would definitely recommend people to order the trout main course. The service could have been a bit better in terms of speed (we had to wait quite a bit for our bill). Nonetheless the waiters were very polite, courteous and helpful in every other way. If you’re visiting Durnstein, this is probably the best place to have a nice meal
Avijeet S — Google review
Outstanding food and service. A very memorable meal, the fried chicken (house speciality) was possibly the best I’ve eaten anywhere - against some pretty tough competition. The deserts were excellent, with the apricot dumplings a stand out local delicacy.

Lack of respect for customers I went with my wife to the RICHARD LOWENHERZ Restaurant where we sat on the very beautiful terrace. We were served the Soup of the Day. An interesting appetizer with apricots, cheese and baked ham. The main course was fish with plain potatoes and a delicious dessert. I have to compliment the service and the food, but the head waiter left me with a bitter taste and disgusted me. After I used the restaurant's toilet, he didn't point out that the toilet wasn't a public one. I didn't understand the hint, but it was in very bad taste.
Paul L — Google review
The food is expensive but good - just about worth the price. What makes this place worth 5 stars is the atmosphere. The service was top notch. I especially appreciated the wine service (as someone in the wine trade I know good service when I see it) including honest recommendations with the customer’s best interests at heart, rather than just trying to upsell. Even though we were unable to get a table on the edge with the best view, we had some view of the river and the courtyard itself is lovely. Yesterday we ate at Schloss Durnstein and whilst both were very good this was just very slightly better food, very slightly better service, and very slightly cheaper.

This is one of the nicest places in the Wachau valley. The terrace overlooking the Danube and the Church tower in the back is a little paradise. I come here to eat and enjoy for the last some 40 years and the Hotel and restaurant hasn’t changed. Always reliable, good food, friendly service.

The location is very nice as well as the staff, however the place itself if pretty run down and could definitely use some renovation. The food was bland and undercooked and by no means worth the asking price. Feels like getting scammed

Recently visited Weingut und Restaurant Josef Jamek, as part of a Viking wine tasting excursion. Although the location was beautiful, the actual wine tasting experience could have been better. The social aspect was enjoyable, with charcuterie platters and ample bread on the table. We tried their Field wines in white and red varieties, as well as sparkling water for spritzers. These options were satisfactory but not exceptional. The bottles of wine circulated slowly around the room, providing only a small taste.
Excellent tasting experience with exceptionally knowledgeable server. Got an authentic understanding of the Wachau Valley wines in addition to some lesser known grapes grown in the region.

Excellent restaurant with a beautiful garden. Service very attentive. Small menu with the extremely nice touch of offering traditional dishes as they were prepared by the senior chef.

Definitiv the place to eat in the Wachau. The garden is just beautiful. And the inside of the restaurant great. Highest Austrian standard.

Visited here as part of a Viking wine tasting outing. While it's a lovely place, we could have had a better "tasting" back at the bar on the ship. The social aspect overcame this aspect. We had a couple of nice charcuterie platters on the table with a generous amount of bread. Field wines white and red and sparkling water to make spritzers. These were ok. The bottles that made their way slooowwwly around the room afforded a splash of bottled wine. We had to ask many times for refills and no guidance or comment was provided. This may reflect more on Viking's description and expectations they set.
Adam B — Google review
Excellent in every respect. We had dinner in the restaurant and stayed overnight. The dinner menu is Austrian with a few Jamek specialties. The wine menu is of course their own. We enjoyed a glass of rosé Sekt, a bottle of Grüner Veltliner and a Williams schnapps. Food, wine and, above all, the service were perfect. Our room was huge and very comfortable. Breakfast was just as good as the dinner and set us up well for a day's hike to Jauerling. Would definitely go again and strongly recommend staying overnight to enjoy it all to the full.
