Woolacombe Beach is a picturesque stretch of sand located in North Devon, on the edge of the charming seaside town of Woolacombe. This three-mile long beach is renowned for its surfing waves and stunning views, surrounded by rugged cliffs and dunes. It has been consistently recognized as the UK's best beach, winning accolades from TripAdvisor for two consecutive years.
Gorgeous sandy beach & clear blue sea. Went for a paddle & it wasn't too cold actually. Last time I was here was over 30 years ago but it was still as beautiful as I remembered. Could do with a decent ice cream seller close to the beach but we found one after a short walk away from the beach. Great to see so many people enjoying the beach & the water

What a fantastic beach we have visited a few times now and it’s become a family favorite!!! Me and my son visited for a couple of days of bodyboarding some beautiful waves we parked in the national trust car park which is free if you’re a member or £10 if not still a bargain for all day … Definitely worth a visit I can highly recommend
Lee R — Google review
My favourite beach in England. Super clean, always lots of spots available away from other beach users. Perfect for surfers, families and dog walkers.
Jessica M — Google review
Long stretch of sandy beach. It was incredibly busy entering near Sandy Bar car park but a lot quieter if you venture a few minutes away. The sea was fairly rough when we went. There is a lifeguard on duty here. There are a good selection of rock pools here too, especially towards the Barricane beach end (though difficult to know where each beach starts and ends).
Adam S — Google review
Such a beautiful and well maintained beach. Plenty of parking options if you aren’t staying locally, National Trust members can even park for free now on Marine Drive! Board and wetsuit hire available on the slipway and there are plenty of food and drinks options available there too, as well as on the beach itself. Beautiful walks along the dunes to Putsborough or in the opposite direction along the coast path to a whole range of smaller beaches.
Steph G — Google review
Brilliant beach, great lifeguards. Huge beach which is well serviced with bins and ice cream vendors. Lovely sandy beach with areas for dogs off lead, on lead, and a no dog area.
Stuart B — Google review
Lovely dog friendly beach. Just went for the 2 mile walk each way and a well deserved ice lolly at the end. Beautiful sand dunes with little lizards. Clean and child friendly. Plenty of body boarders out too.
Claire S — Google review
A beautiful, long stretch of sandy beach that's perfect for a coastal walk or relaxing day out. It was busy around the Sandy Bar car park, but if you're willing to walk just a few minutes further along the beach, it becomes much quieter and more peaceful. The sea was fairly rough during the late evening when we visited, so probably better for experienced swimmers or surfers at that time. Overall, a lovely spot with plenty of space once you move away from the main access points. Highlights: long beach, Golden sand, enough car parking (paid), some beach shops near by to rent/buy equipments.

Barricane Beach, located a few hundred meters to the east of Woolacombe, is a small and secluded beach known for its unique shell particles that have traveled all the way from the Caribbean. During the summer, visitors can explore the sands and rocks with their dogs on a lead. The beach also features a seasonal cafe that transforms into a Sri Lankan restaurant in the evenings, serving delicious curries between 5pm and 7pm.
Gorgeous beach! We visited in the evening so it was quiet. We enjoyed a stroll along the beach looking for shells.
Tracey B — Google review
Nice little cove. Sand very gritty. Went there looking for shells that apparently wash in from the Caribbean but none to be had. Little cafe there too for a drink or something to eat
Riley H — Google review
Family friendly beach. Sandy and very few rocks or shells. Loads of spaces on beach esp during low tide. Rock pooling with crabs and small fishes. Two streams of water perfect for toddlers to splash about. Two toilets within a few mins walk, plus a few shops selling beach toys and RNLI life guards during holiday season. Water is cold so need wetsuits for body boarding. My children (10 & 8) had a smashing time. We came for a long weekend and came to this beach 4 days in a row. We’ll be back!
Maria M — Google review
A gorgeous secluded beach with a fab beach cafe. I collected some beautiful little shells from here! Great parking on the road above, although the maximum stay is only 4 hours!
Karen P — Google review
Absolutely beautiful and great fun for all the family, including dogs🙂 Paddle boarding is good but can't go too far as the current will potentially drag you towards the rocks. When the tide is out the rocks are great for exploring. Lots of rock pools, shells etc. Beautiful scenery. Definitely recommend.
Lisa W — Google review
Really lovely little beach and nicer than visiting all of the busier bigger beaches. There is a small takeaway cafe down there with sandwiches and other things. The rock formations down here and very picturesque and fun to walk and climb around. Definitely worth a visit. You can park on the road above if you manage to find a space otherwise you will need to walk a short while to get there.
Holly O — Google review
Such a wonderful small and quiet beach! I came here with my friends to search for sea glass. We found some creatures like crabs in the rock pools. The cafe seems nice, we wanted to try the curry but did not have time that day - but from what I heard from others sounds fantastic! I have always prefered this kind of pebble beach compared to sand beach but it will depend on your prefrence.

Fantastic beach with rock pools and it's is also sandy, just down the road from the much more busy Woolacombe beach. It's does have steep stairs to go down and parking is very limited. Woolcomeb shops are around 10 min walk.

Nestled atop a cliff along the rugged Atlantic coastline, Combesgate Beach offers breathtaking views that stretch towards Hartland Point and Lundy Island. This charming, secluded beach is just a short stroll from Barricane Beach and is perfect for families looking to explore rock pools or build sandcastles away from the crowds. While access involves navigating a long flight of steps—making it less ideal during high tide—the golden sands beckon on sunny days for leisurely walks or delightful picnics.
Can't go wrong with any beach in this area, gorgeous
Steve W — Google review
Really loved this beach compared to some of the bigger busier beaches near here. Parking is a bit of a pain so you will have to walk a bit to get there but it's definitely worth it. We went in the evening and had the whole beach to ourselves as nobody else was there. Its a good beach also for sea glass hunting! Be aware that it is quite a few steps down to the beach so not suitable for those who can't walk much as they might struggle.
Holly O — Google review
Very clean, tucked away beach by the watersmeet Hotel. Tucked away and great for dogs. Very clean as are the rest of the beaches around here. Good for rock pooling and other activities. Lots of space at low tide and normally very quiet.
Olly S — Google review
This is by far the nicest place I have been in the UK! When the tide is out you can access the beach by the steps (so unfortunately no good for anyone with mobility problems) Once the seas out it leaves lots of little rock pools, some up to your thigh and the water is perfectly clear. Because of the rocks you can get a bit of privacy pretty much all around the edges. Beautiful beach, perfect for all, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the rock pools, jumping the waves and building sandcastles. We will certainly be back!!
Jo B — Google review
Lovely beach with lots of nooks and coves to explore and discover. Good for surfing and bodyboarding as well as a normal beach day. Accessible at low tide via steps or from Woolacombe beach. 10/10 beach
Alex M — Google review
Lovely quiet beach even on the first weekend of Easter half term. Loads of room on the sand when the tide is out.

Awesome beach for surfing and rock pooling. Very quiet compared to the organised Woolacombe Beach. Only drawback is no dogs allowed!

Grunta Beach is a hidden gem located near Mortehoe village, offering a quiet and dog-friendly cove for visitors to enjoy. This picturesque shoreline is perfect for leisurely strolls, beachcombing for driftwood and shells, and capturing scenic photographs. While the rocky terrain may pose challenges for some, the stunning views and unique geological features make it a worthwhile destination.
Loved it. I should have worn my walking boots so I could have taken the pathway further. The scenery is breathtaking. . . Little bonus on the way back is a little coffee and cold drink horse box with super friendly guys serving a well earned drink / snack.

Lovely beach well worth the walk down

A hidden gem! Rock pools. Shells, pebbles and great views of the tide breaking on the rocks. Roadside parking (if you can get it) available on the road that runs parallel to it.
Graham T — Google review
Great for finding driftwood, pebbles and taking scenic photographs. Wonder recommend if you struggle walking or have problems with your ankles/legs as the rocks are quite difficult to walk on and the stair way down to the beach isn't particularly sturdy.

No parking nearby. Much more protected bay than Woolacombe. Plenty of places to set up out of the wind. Child friendly but may struggle on descent with very small children.

Horseback riding service
Outdoor Activities
Woolacombe Riding Stables, located at Eastacott Farm, offers horse riding experiences for all ages and skill levels. The stables provide access to over 200 acres of countryside, as well as rides across sand dunes and a three-mile stretch of golden sandy beach. They are the only approved riding stable by Parking Estates to ride along Woolacombe beach.
My daughter, friend, and I recently travelled down to Woolacombe to go on the beach ride from Woolacombe Riding Stables which was booked to celebrate my daughters bithday; All three of us had wanted to do a beach ride for ages and I'm so glad we did this one! We had a fantastic time from start to finish - The staff took great care in matching us to horses to suit our size and confidence, and we were able to ride briefly in the school (both to check our ability/ safety for the ride, and to check we felt comfortable with our horses) The ride itself was fantastic!; we had a few gallops down the beach and a paddle in the sea; our guide allowed us to ride side by side (as long as we kept close to/ behind the leader) which was brilliant fun and just what we'd hoped for. There was then a ride back,( with a few canters too 😁) along the coastal path, and time to take a few photos. Our guide kept us well informed at all times and we felt safe yet allowed to have fun; a real blast! All in all a fabulous experience, and highly recommended for any experienced riders out there. The only (very minor) issue is that the road down to the Stables is very narrow and winding and a bit bumpy in parts, but fine as long as you take it slow - it certainly wouldn't put me off returning! Thank you to the staff involved at Woolacombe Riding Stables, and our trusty steeds, Jimmy, Lily and Blaze! 🏇🏇🏇
Rachel M — Google review
I had an amazing beach ride whilst visiting the area. Laura my guide was very friendly and encouraging. I rode Blaze who was very forward going and certainly loved a gallop on the beach! You do need a quick assessment in the arena (walk and trot) before going out, but this is so they can check you are an advanced rider and can control the horse, but also that you have been given the right horse. I will definitely ride again if I visit the area again. I would love to paddle more in the sea when it's warmer, we did go in but this time of year is just too cold for the horses.
Clair C — Google review
We were really disappointed with our experience. The ride we booked over the phone was not what we got—it was advertised as intermediate, but turned out to be very basic. One of our group is an experienced rider (just rusty), and we had explained we wanted more than just a gentle walk, but still something fun and manageable. The initial greeting was unfriendly and patronising. The so-called assessment in the sand school was minimal and dismissive, leaving us feeling more like an inconvenience than valued customers. Out on the hills, there was a lot of standing around while gates were opened, only a couple of short trots, and very brief canters—so slow and limited that it was frustrating. The horses themselves were low-energy and unresponsive; one rider even needed a stick just to get a stride of canter. Overall, the ride felt flat, not at all the “intermediate” we’d been promised. While the two ladies who led the ride were kind, the management came across as rude, defensive, and unprofessional. The way they handled payment—demanding immediate settlement despite our poor signal and lack of WiFi—was unnecessarily aggressive and left a sour taste. I even phoned afterwards to give them direct feedback and an opportunity to make things right before leaving a review, but was mostly met with defensiveness and dismissiveness, with only one apology. That just confirmed the poor attitude we experienced throughout. If you’re a beginner, this place might suit you. But if you’re looking for a genuine intermediate experience with well-schooled horses and a welcoming atmosphere, I’d recommend going elsewhere. Certainly not worth the price.

Lovely beach ride across woolacombe/putsborough beach this morning. I rode a beautiful mare called lily who was pretty forward going and eager to go faster. Our guide was extremely friendly and chatty. Had a little walk trot assessment in their arena beforehand to see if the horses were suitable for riders ability, and off we went!! Picturesque scenery throughout the ride. Very pleased x

We were staying at sunnymead campsite down the road from woolacombe riding stables when we asked the owner about horse riding for our children 6 and 10 near by, the owner recommended woolacombe riding stables and so glad they did the girls had a wonderful hour and my partner even joined in and all absolutely loved it, very well run ,staff were amazing and horses were obviously very well cared for. The girls have done nothing but talk about there horse riding since and can't wait to go again. Will definitely visit here again.
Philip B — Google review
We booked to ride while we was on a mid week break and it was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The staff was brilliant as I had never ridden before and stayed by my side and gave me great instructions so I could get the best out of the experience. The horse we had was beautiful and very placid. Great experience all round and would seriously recommend.
Craig B — Google review
We would definitely recommend these stables our daughter had a beach ride and the experience was amazing and we'll organised. Thankyou so much, also for those watching make your way to the port hole cafe and onto the beach best of both worlds

Booked a 1 hour hack during my weeks holiday all I can say is this AWFUL !! Intermediate rider who currently canters at a different stables. firstly £50. £25 to be paid deposit. £25 on the day. I was asked to pay before I even knew which horse I was riding …. Anyway paid and got on. I have never had this policy at any equestrian centre. The horse was beautiful and my size but the reins were completely overused and very uncomfortable to hold without gloves. Half way through the start of the hack my horse point blank refused to walk on when asked and wouldn’t listen to my commands. This was very embarrassing and annoying as I felt I couldn’t enjoy my hack. Tired horse ? Horse not suitable for a hack ? I then hear the instructor behind me saying to another rider ‘oh yes this is her behaviour she likes to test us, she doesn’t like going up or down hills’ Surely that means this horse isn’t suitable for a hack where we do not have time to get to know the horses? When we started to trot the horse wouldn’t even go into a fast trot without the instructor having to make a leash to tap her bottom along. I asked the instructor is this me am I doing something wrong ? Apparently not this is just the horses behaviour and likes to not walk on command. The staff were so patronising and unpleasant. Any outsiders will be made to feel like there incompetent in my opinion. Probably a good stables for young children who don’t know any different. Worst £50 I have ever spent ‘wasted’.

A hidden gem! Our 3rd visit to this lovely pub tucked away off the busy main area. Nice outside seating area where we sat with our 2 dogs. Bowls of water provided, perfect after a long beach walk and thirsty pups. The food on previous visits was very good and this time it was the same. Ordered 2 ultimate burgers and wow such good value for money. The quality of the beef was exceptional. I had to ask for a takeout box as it was so big I couldn’t finish it all. Worth a try if you’re in the area. We already can’t wait to return.

Tucked away just off the main strip, The Jube is a bit of a hidden gem in Woolacombe. We went on a Friday night, so it was understandably busy, and we had to wait a little while for a table, but it was totally worth it. The vibe is spot on. Relaxed, friendly, and perfect whether you’re just grabbing a quiet drink or catching up over food with friends. Our waiter was brilliant really attentive despite how packed it was. The food took a little time to come out as they work from a small kitchen, but honestly, when it arrived, we got it. Everything was so fresh and the portions were huge. Properly off-the-charts good. You can tell they care about quality. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this spot. It’s the kind of place that feels laid-back but still delivers in a big way.
Navi A — Google review
A Regrettably Disappointing Visit – Be Warned I feel it's important to share our experience to hopefully prevent others from encountering the same frustration. Our recent visit was, regrettably, very disappointing. First and foremost, the wait times were outrageous. We were initially told a 50-minute wait for a table of two, with no option to book in advance. After nearly an hour of waiting, we were told our table would be ready "soon." However, once we were finally able to order, we faced an additional 1 hour and 15 minute wait for our food to arrive. The atmosphere was equally problematic. If you're hoping to eat outside, be prepared for a constant stream of chain-smokers. Inside, the noise level was akin to a nightclub, with blaring music and shouting making it incredibly difficult to hold a conversation, even with those at our own table. The bar staff also seemed overwhelmed and barely acknowledged customers. It was evident that the staff are overworked and severely mismanaged. They appeared to be receiving conflicting instructions, leading to a chaotic environment. (Kudos to the front-of-house staff member who was trying their best to manage the huge influx of people.) Lastly, let's talk about the prices, which are frankly extortionate. It's as if we were In London ! the cost of both food and drinks was astronomically high, far exceeding the average prices found at other local restaurants

Lovely pub hidden in the back streets, great seating inside and out. Quiet when we visited but would imagine that it would get full in the summer holiday months. Dog friendly. Really tasty, well presented food. Plenty of choices on the menu. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great little find and would thoroughly recommend.

Nestled in a picturesque cove, Barricane Beach Cafe is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of beach activities. With its stunning views of undulating waves and the impressive Monkey Island nearby, this cafe offers a delightful escape. Known for its delicious Sri Lankan curry, especially popular during the summer months, it also serves an array of hearty options like loaded baguettes, baps, and jacket potatoes.
This was just amazing! We decided to give this a try on recommendation, and boy, it didn’t disappoint! We got there about 6pm, and the queue to order food was up the hill - can’t be a bad sign, right?? The queue moved quickly, and it took around 20 mins for the food to come out. The beach was full, everyone eating a portion of curry, with either a fresh pineapple juice or a can of their own drink, watching the sunset after a long, really warm, and clear blue sky day! If you’re in the area and like a curry, do not sleep on this one! Fingers crossed you do it on a nice day, where you can have the spectacle of the sunset too!

We were walking down the beach front towards Woolacombe when we smelt the pleasant aroma of curry wafting up the cliff. This was enough to whet our appetite. Let’s not get carried away, this is takeaway food from a beach cafe, there’s nothing gourmet about it. However, it’s good value for money, the setting is amazing and the food very tasty. Overall I would recommend a visit and I am pleased to rate this establishment at 4 stars.
Barry B — Google review
Can't beat a Sri Lankan curry takeaway on the beach. They've kept it to a simple, winning strategy - choice of 2 curries either meat (usually chicken) or veg and two portion sizes - adults or kids. Tasty food served in a delightful spot.
Michelle J — Google review
Pretty much perfect. A lovely little location, partially sheltered by the cliffs and with just four tables in front of the shed-type building. It's all lifted up over the shingle and shell-fragment beach, overlooking the water between the cliffs and slate monoliths upon which tourists climb for a dramatic panoramic. To sit there and eat really feels like being on holiday. As for the food, it's very good. The Argentinian ciabatta with beef, onions, peppers and more was absolutely delicious. We went back on the same day for the Sri Lankan curry, which wasn't presented so well but was very tasty; well balanced spices and perfectly crunchy veg. Can't recommend highly enough if you're in the area.

This is because we love the food (so delicious) and the atmosphere is chilled and relaxed at the beach ( very family friendly and dog friendly). THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FOOD! We live in Derbyshire and were holidaying in Croyde back in July and found this place after a quick google search for gluten free food as I am coeliac. I was blown away by how stunningly gorgeous the food is, it’s well presented, very generous portions and beyond tasty. We then booked another holiday to Woolacombe (November) and the first thing we did was book a table to be able to revisit, we were lucky enough to catch it before it started slowing down for the end of season. Very friendly and helpful staff and a beautiful location. My new favourite restaurant. We will definitely be back!

Me and my fiancée had the most wonderful meal here. I had the cod and my partner had the sirloin and they were DELICIOUS, cooked to perfection and full of flavour. Every aspect of our visit was faultless. From the friendly service, beautiful food and stunning sunset views. We travelled 40 minutes from our hotel to dine here and it did not disappoint. I would 100% recommend.

The location is perfect. The interior is lovely, open and very nice. Welcoming service and attentive. I was really pleased with the roast beef. The vegetables were cooked beautifully, and there was a big range such as parsnips, cabbage swede, Cauliflower cheese, peas, carrots and green. Garlic was a lovely touch for the beef. The only downfall I would say would be the roast potatoes were a little too hard to cut and therefore eat. The options were really good. My partner had the mixed roast dinner and I tried the belly pork which was delicious. I look forward to coming back here.

Visited this place for the first time in years. I remember when it was a cafe 20 years ago. It’s been a number of different food offers and now a cool little restaurant. Didn’t really know what to expect, but was blown away by how lovely the whole experience was. Really friendly staff. Nice drinks selection. Menu is focussed and that’s a good sign - they do good food and chose their ingredients carefully. I had a few oysters to start. They were amazing- so much better than others I’ve had locally. My family stole some of them (they don’t normally like oysters!). Also had some bread and aioli - really good garlic hit. Mains - the others all went with the seafood linguine. It came with lots of prawns and muscles. It was excellent- the tiny amount they shared with me. I had a venison burger which was on special. And it was indeed very special. I wouldn’t normally order a burger, but I’d been surfing and was so hungry. Wonderful bacon, cheese, salad, brioche bun. Rare meat. The others demanded a bite and said they’d order that in a heart beat. It was amazing. I’d munch a load before I remembered to take a picture so sorry about the half eaten pic. Chips were also very good. If we’d more time I’d go back to try other things on the menu. Based on one visit it’s my favourite place to eat in Woolacombe now. It’s not cheap but it is good value. And much better value than some of the other places locally. I’ll review after I’ve been a few more times. Go eat there as this place deserves a visit as they are doing good stuff.

We booked in for lunch on a Saturday and were really happy as it is also dog friendly. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and looked after us well. Drinks orders were taken and served quickly. All of our food was cooked to perfection and I especially enjoyed the mussels.... They were absolutely delicious! As it was our dog's birthday recently and he is getting on, we ordered him a steak. The staff offered a plastic bowl and water for him too. Highly recommend and we look forward to visiting again when we next visit Woolacombe.

Our 3rd dinner here in 2 months and we just wish we had found it sooner. Relaxed and friendly with lovely decor, the menu is varied to suit all tastes and the quality and presentation is outstanding. We love everything about it and are already justifying our next visit. It is dog friendly and we may take them next time !

Lovely B&B in the centre of the village of Mortehoe. Well presented, comfortable room, with ensuite shower room, tea and coffee making facilities. Easy access with electronic keyfob, so we could come and go as we pleased. Will is a friendly helpful host. Breakfasts were top notch, from the lighter option of pancakes and fruit to a full cooked breakfast, with lots of vegetarian options. I would recommend and hope to return for another stay.

This eas an amazing place to stay. The rooms are beautifully done and clean. The owners made us feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Everyone was so friendly and had great knowledge of the local area for whatever you might want to do. The food in the evening was first class ! I would advise to book in advance as it is popular, which is no surprise. I couldn't recommend highly enough.

So good we ate here twice! We were staying in Morthoe and found this bistro when we were walking round the village. The food is amazing and the service is fantastic. The steak is the best we have had in the UK. The puddings were delicious. The wine list is also very good. Would not hesitate to recommend. Morthoe is very lucky to have such a gem in the village.

Staying in Mortehoe for a week, we ate here twice. Food was absolutely stunning. Seafood pasta and Gurnard on first visit was delicious. Followed by brilliant cheesecake! Also we enjoyed a superb Spanish white. Next visit, after 2 unsolicited recommends from people we met walking the local cliff paths, we had steaks. BEST steak I have ever eaten. Locally raised ruby red beef cooked expertly with a sublime pepper sauce. Faultless. The owner Will and his wife are exceptionally good hosts - they have that perfect chill but super professional vibe going on. Special thanks to front of house Cody who looked after our ever needwith great humour and hospitality. Would recommend in a heartbeat and will certainly return.

Great find. Beautiful, clean venue with beach views. Centrally located minutes from the beach. Fabulous Sunday roast; very special for Mother's day. Josh was very welcoming and his colleagues were also polite and friendly. Great service from a young team. What a pleasure. Book today!

We haven’t eaten here but it’s a great spot to enjoy a cold beer or a glass of bubbly on what must be one of the best sun terraces in Woolacombe. Have returned a few times. Excellent place for chilling with great views in the sunshine.

Awesome view. Woolacombe beach Great breakfast and great price. Will go as often as I can. Terrific staff, very nice and helpful, head chef came and asked if everything was OK. Felt really chuffed. Easy bike parking and such a great location.

Our first visit here for the purpose of having a roast dinner. Friendly welcome and superb service throughout the meal. One of the most delicious and well presented meals we’ve had recently. Thoroughly recommend

If I could give 10 stars out of 5 I would! By far our favourite meal in woolacombe! We had dinner here in june, and a few drinks in the outside area (a few times!) Prawns to start which were seriously maybe the best I have ever had :) Lobster was on the specials, and I was worried about how to eat it so I asked the friendly waiter who assured me the staff would help if I got stuck! The lobster was beautiful and although I didn't actually need help the wonderful people working there checked in with me :) My friends meals were also excellent! Drinks outside also recommended; amazing views:)

So just made a phone call to the tides in regards to me asking if we could book a table! The gentleman on the phone was rude and made me feel very uncomfortable !! I understand people are busy and yes no tables but basically rude and put the phone down on me before I could even say anything. It’s a shame because the reviews on the food look very good but I definitely won’t be visiting .
