Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a lively amusement park located on a scenic mile-long sandy beach. Established in 1907, it offers a blend of thrilling rides and entertaining activities, set against the backdrop of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy historic attractions such as the Looff Carousel and the iconic Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster.
Definitely a cool experience. I like the fact that there's no admission fees. You pay for what you do, not what you look at. Lots of awesome birds and seals to look at. Lots of fun activities and good 'fair food.' Travellers beware: parking is a nightmare. Either you need to get there when the lots open, or find a place 1+ km away and walk in. It's a nice walk, so I recommend the latter. Do NOT try to get down to the boardwalk parking...I spent literally 30 minutes trying to go a couple kilometers.

Summer Nostalgia at Its Best 🎡🌭✨ So many great summer memories of coming here with my family — and even from when I was a kid myself! While a few things have changed (no more darts to pop the balloons and the games are now cashless), the magic is still there. Who Can forget going on the carousel and getting the ring that you tossed to the clown to make his eyes light up The corn dogs and funnel cakes are just as amazing as ever, and the people-watching? Still unbeatable. 🎠💛

The Boardwalk and the entire beach is such a fun place to visit with friends or family. The beach is great to relax and play some sports. Lots of arcades and rides for young people and kids. The walk is long with lots of shops and restaurants to dine in, and of course, the seals make a lovely side attraction. Best to visit in the morning to beat the traffic and find parking a little more easily.
David I — Google review
A perfect mix of fun, food, and ocean views! The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is such a lively and nostalgic place full of energy, music, and that classic seaside charm. The rides are fun for all ages, the food stands have everything from churros to garlic fries, and the beach right next to it is beautiful for a sunset walk. It’s a bit crowded on weekends, but that’s part of the fun vibe. Definitely a must-visit spot if you’re in Santa Cruz
Rachana K — Google review
One of the best boardwalks in the US among the ones I have been to. Fun, full of people yet not irritatingly crowded at all. The beach is super clean. Boardwalk has a ton of casino, arcade, and other games if you are into that. Huge range of food options - from seafood to pizza - all available within a walking distance. Do not miss the sunset from here.
Rupam B — Google review
This is a really cool spot to walk, people watch, and have a little fun, but our feelings were mixed on our visit. First, parking across the street is $20 flat rate. So even if you’re there 30 minutes you’re in for $20. Second, rides are extremely expensive. They REALLY want you to buy wristbands but the lines can be very long so it wasn’t worth it for us. The fair style food was good but the other options seemed mediocre at best. The arcade was actually outstanding and had reasonable rates, which my family enjoyed quite a bit!
Marshall C — Google review
Had a blast!! Been going here since I was 12! Seen lots of changes thru the years. This is one of the best visits. Ride and attractions and food options improved. Love the addition of the tables and benches to eat!! Overall it was a great experience Thank you!!!
Tina L — Google review
Amazing place to visit! The family had so much fun waking along the boardwalk. The food and games were awesome! The only downside is that everything closed at 5pm. We went on a Saturday and it was disappointing to see it close so early! I know it’s off season but 5pm on the weekend is wild!

Piers & Boardwalks
Santa Cruz Wharf is a popular bayside pier known for its beach shops, seafood restaurants, and sea lion sightings. After a day at the beach, visitors can explore downtown Santa Cruz with its historic charm and eclectic shops. Bookshop Santa Cruz is an iconic independent bookstore offering a wide variety of books and gifts. Movie enthusiasts can catch indie films at The Nickelodeon or enjoy the elegant ambiance of the art deco Del Mar Theater.
Santa Cruz Wharf offers a delightful coastal experience. The clear, sunny weather enhanced the scenic ocean views, and watching the sea lions resting below added a unique charm. It’s an excellent place for a peaceful stroll, wildlife observation. A memorable visit overall.😍
Abhilash R — Google review
The most intimate place to safely watch charismatic sea lions up close! The pier is a long series of seafood restaurants, with a couple of souvenir stores, & otherwise is just a huge pay parking lot. But it juts out surprisingly far out into the water, giving unique views of the sea, the cliffs, & the Boardwalk. I met several fisherman scooping up tons of anchovies out of the water below. Very limited metered parking immediately outside the pay gate. Several public restrooms along the wharf.
Kaliador18 — Google review
Been coming here since I was a teenager. Lots of foods choices. Gift shops and fishing. Sea lions are a cool thing to watch. Relax on the pier for the day is a good getaway
Tina L — Google review
We did bingo pumpkin hunt this year and it was really easy! I enjoy the zombie shake (not as impressive as last year, last year I got two eyeballs and blood!) and mummy marshmallow and a chocolate bone Oreo! For the rewards of pumpkin hunt you get: ducky, candy, mochi squishy, or other Halloween themed trinkets.
Caroline T — Google review
As wharf go, this one is very long and has a few good restaurants and a few stores. If you go to the Boardwalk it would be a nice add on.

Absolutely wonderful experience. The kids got to touch tons of sea life and the docents are really well informed. Take the tour!

What a gem! We (2 adults) had a great visit. Kids would love it too, but we enjoyed the touch pools as much as kids! Everyone here was so knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. They also have a great tour revolving around conservation and research. Our tour guide, Kevin, was great to talk to and we learned so much. I highly recommend carving out time to visit this amazing place. We spent about 1.75 hours here and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Our wedding at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center was an absolutely unforgettable experience, and we're still glowing from the memories! The venue itself is breathtaking, with that stunning ocean overlook providing the most magical backdrop for our ceremony and photos. The unique combination of natural beauty and the interactive exhibits and aquarium really made our celebration stand out. Our guests were absolutely charmed and engaged throughout the entire event – it was truly a 'fin-tastic' time! We can't say enough about Venk and Cassidy. Their professionalism and friendly demeanor were invaluable during the planning process and on the day itself. They were incredibly responsive, attentive to every detail, and truly went above and beyond to ensure our wedding was perfect. Their expertise and genuine enthusiasm made us feel completely at ease. They were always there to lend a 'helping fin' and made sure everything went 'swimmingly.' The Seymour Marine Discovery Center delivered a truly unique and memorable wedding experience. If you're looking for a venue that combines natural beauty, educational charm, and exceptional service, we wholeheartedly recommend it. Our wedding was a dream come true, and we're so grateful to Venk, Cassidy, and the entire team for making it so special. We were 'hooked' from the start, and it was a day we'll 'sea-riously' never forget! Photos by: Soil and Sea Photography

It was a rainy day, so it was a perfect place to take my niece and nephew and their children. I was a little disappointed that some of the displays were not working, but the shark enclosure and in the back where you can learn more about about sea urchins, and starfish was awesome for the kidstoo bad they didn’t have a restaurant there. And then we went outside that was beautiful skeleton of the whales unbelievable.

Mysterious Sites
Located in a dense redwood forest, the Mystery Spot has been captivating visitors since its discovery in 1939. This peculiar attraction defies gravity and challenges perception, with people and objects appearing tilted instead of upright. Despite extensive scientific interest, the cause of these strange phenomena remains unknown. The site's mysterious nature has led to various theories, including extraterrestrial influences.
This place was an absolute hit for the family and I! Our tour guide Jim (if that’s even his real name lol) did such a wonderful job! The jokes were top notch and this was second time for two people from our group and they said it was even better than the last time they went! The price for the 45 minute tour was spot on and don’t forget to tip your tour guide! 🤗 This was one of the highlights of our family trip! If you haven’t booked your tour yet and are still on the fence? Don’t think twice!! Go book now 🐌🌱

Fun and unique place to visit! 🌲 Buy tickets online ahead of time (we waited 3½ hours because we didn’t know). No cell service, but we enjoyed a beautiful hike while waiting (watch little ones — steep drop-offs!). Downtown Santa Cruz and the boardwalk are only about 10 minutes away, so you can explore while you wait. Tour was short but our guide Megan was hilarious and made it great. Overall, awesome experience and worth checking out!
Renee — Google review
Finally visited The Mystery Spot after 10 years in the Bay Area and numerous trips to Santa Cruz. First impression: it’s just a dilapidated house - I expected much more from the area than that. But honestly, that’s more than enough. The marketing of this place is on another level. The tour guide’s presentation alone is worth more than the $10 ticket - they put in so much effort, and you really fall for their presentation. Plus, they’re hilarious. Definitely a fun experience. I don’t believe it’s otherworldly; it’s just an optical illusion at its best, presented the right way. Book your tickets online ahead of time - we did, and we were in and out in an hour. Enjoyed the experience.

This place was so cool. It was such an amazing experience. I am very sensitive to everything around me and I really felt an odd feeling whenever I entered into what they call the 'Mystery Spot'. It wasn't just because everything looked cockeyed, but it was literally a feeling in my body. I felt like I was carrying around an additional 50 lb on each of my legs. It was the weirdest feeling. It was really cool how everything in this place seem to defy physics. Our guide was super knowledgeable and made it even more fun just because of her great personality. Highly recommend checking this place out and if you can buying your tickets online beforehand especially if it's going to be during a busy time.
Porsche D — Google review
Wow this is definitely a very cool and trippy experience nestled in the beautiful redwoods. There’s a few demonstrations which are cool and some photo opportunities as well. Whole tour takes about 45 minutes and the tour guides are always interesting. The gift shop is great too and totally worth the 10 bucks. Buy advance tickets if you plan on visiting during a busy weekend.
Andrew — Google review
I grew up around the Santa Cruz area and have always wanted to come to the mystery spot since I was a kid. Since I had to move out of state, on vacation 23 years later, I got to bring my family with me to enjoy this small but great attraction. We had fun and enjoyed every moment. The tour guy was awesome, too! Great memories!
Joe A — Google review
Cute little side adventure to take kids on. Tour is roughly 45 min. If you have bad knees or ankles def not a tour for you sadly as it is very angle heavy and when coming down the grade is rough. But overall tour guides run on dad jokes and it was a nice odd spot to visit.
Juanita L — Google review
The mystery spot is tucked away in the gorgeous spot in the woods. I love their little sitting area to relax while you wait for your tour time, and the gift shop was fun to look through as well. The waiting area and the bathrooms were kept clean, and the weather was just right when we went. The drive into/out of this spot can be a little sketchy in certain spots depending on how big your vehicle is as some spots of the road are a bit narrow for two cars to be going side by side. This was a fun spot to visit with my family, our tour guide was energetic and did a great job. The Mystery spot itself is neat, it was pretty crazy to see the demonstrations because they really do seem to defy gravity and how you perceive what is 'normal'. I honestly can not remember how long the tour was, but it was a decent amount of time and they allow you enough time to take some fun photos. This spot is not handicap or stroller friendly. The slope up to the little shack which is the mystery spot is quite steep and with the slanted angles your ankles/body will be in while walking through the shack will be hard on certain people.

Natural Bridges State Beach, located a few miles north of Santa Cruz, is a 65-acre state-owned park known for its natural wonders. The beach features rock bridges and tidepools where visitors can spot seabirds, whales, and seals. One of the main attractions is the two-story stone bridge that gives the beach its name. Although only one bridge remains standing, it's still an impressive sight to behold.
Gorgeous state beach to explore. The water is stunning as you watch is crash and dance on the rocks, the fresh air fills your lungs as you hear seagulls flying by, you can find small crabs and other sea life in the pools, and you can take a lovely stroll along the sand. This beach is so nice and relaxing, perfect for a solo adventure or if you have kids! I came here with my family and while we were here there were families and the kids were enjoying their time exploring the beach. I’d recommend bringing a light jacket especially if it’s overcast since the wind can be a bit chilly. Will absolutely be back the time time I come to Santa Cruz!

Beautiful beach with beautiful views! Absolutely a must for a family day or even alone time watching the sunset. We went on a weekday so we were able to find close street parking, but they do have a large parking lot.
Teresita P — Google review
Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz is nothing short of breathtaking. Even without its most famous visitors, the dramatic sea arch and rugged coastline offer stunning views that make for a perfect afternoon of exploration and tide-pooling. The air is fresh, the paths are well-maintained, and the atmosphere is deeply restorative. But the true, unforgettable magic happens every fall and winter when the Monarch Grove becomes home to thousands of migrating monarch butterflies. Stepping into the eucalyptus grove is like entering a scene from a fairy tale. The trees hang heavy with dense, shimmering clusters of monarchs, looking at first glance like dried leaves. As the sun warms them, the grove comes alive. Hundreds sometimes thousands take flight simultaneously, creating a vibrant, swirling orange cloud that completely envelops you. It is a humbling and spectacular natural phenomenon that everyone should experience at least once. The staff and volunteers are excellent and clearly passionate about protecting this essential habitat. Natural Bridges State Beach is a vital treasure for both nature lovers and casual visitors alike. Five stars!

This natural state oark hosts a sandy beach and tidal pools. We strolled the beach then climbed the rocks up and down to watch the waves splash against the rocks and explore possible marine. We were not disappointed. We saw seals and sea lions. Looking closer into ground surfaces, we found and anemones and a huge orange starfish. We enjoyed exploring and took the high ground road back for a view of the tidal pools from up high. The beach part is not wheelchair accessible Accessible parking on street nearby is free. Note that parking by the park is free for 20 minutes
Toni T — Google review
One of our favorite beaches in Santa Cruz. It’s an easy drive over the hill, and parking is usually not too hard to find. There aren’t any amenities here, but that’s part of its charm — just sand, sea, and sky. If you feel like stretching your legs, a short hike up into the park gives you a lovely view of the coastline. You can walk for ages along the shore, watching surfers catch waves, sailboats drift by, and sunlight glint off the beautiful homes above. It’s the kind of place where time slows down — whether you stay for the day or just an hour or two, you always leave feeling a little lighter. P.S. The new Marianne’s Ice Cream location is now right on the way — the perfect stop before heading home.
J S — Google review
Pretty beach with cool natural bridge rock formation! There was no more parking when we visited on a summer Saturday so we had to park in a neighborhood and walk a short distance over to the beach. Beach definitely gets busy on the weekends here. There is also a gift shop tucked away from the main entrance and a little bit difficult to find, but worth visiting if you can get to it!
Alexandra N — Google review
Can you find the swing? If you can, climb up and go for it. If not just hang out at the beach. Natural Bridges has a nice hiking trail and beach head. The Monarchs usually show up late October.
Mark B — Google review
Went during low tide and had a great time finding starfish, anemone, crab, jellyfish or man-o-war (not sure which is was). The arches were gorgeous and the rocks were a beautiful design.

La Posta is a charming Italian restaurant located in the heart of Seabright, Santa Cruz. The cozy setting and simple interior with dark wood create a welcoming atmosphere for diners. The restaurant focuses on serving inventive Italian dishes made from local and seasonal ingredients. Their menu features super-thin pizzas, homemade bread from the wood-fired oven, cured meats, and fresh pasta. Guests can also enjoy live music while savoring traditional Italian cuisine at this acclaimed dining destination.
We’ve eaten here a handful of times and it never misses. The staff is so friendly, professional and knowledgeable! Shout out to Gavin for taking such good care of us. We have tried so many dishes and love them all, especially the small plates and pizza. You can’t go wrong! Just overall a lovely experience and perfect for a date night.

Loved the spaghetti with crab. Will dream about this, simple dish. Apple tart special left a lot to be desired. Bread was so good. Love this neighborhood gem. Used to go often with friends, but hadn’t been in a long while.

La Posta is a decent Italian spot with a relatively small menu. We especially enjoyed the tortellini and the pizza, both were flavorful and well-made. The desserts were just okay, nothing extraordinary. Still, we’re planning to come back and try more dishes from the menu.

Food was really pretty good! We ordered Seafood stew and it was amazing 💕 Highly recommend to ordered this one! Pizza was not so good like we are expected… but normal. They’re have a very good sangria and IPA beer. Branzino was good too actually…. It was little bit longer for waiting… but it’s ok…

Overall it was fine. There was one table already seated when we arrived early for our reservation, and the hostess attempted to seat us at the table right next to the entrance to the kitchen/bar. And when I asked to be seated at a different table further away from the kitchen, she directed us to the table immediately next to the first one. Mind you the entire restaurant was empty. The food was mediocre sadly at best. The shrimp appetizer was a joke for $19 - a few pieces of fried shrimp, a handful of fried artichoke hearts and some olives. The corzetti with fruiti di mare my friends ordered seemed tasty but still just fine. The gnocchi with ragu was maybe a little off balanced. There was a ton of ragu with the oily sauce at the base and the gnocchi was oddly shaped and kind of soft. There were a group of servers that were lingering in the side area of the bar/kitchen having loud conversation about tv shows and such - not great for customers to see or hear that you have workers that are just loitering around. Not a place that I would necessarily return to or recommend. There are better Italian places.
Emily L — Google review
Food was pretty good, we had tagliolini and salsiccia pizza along with coconut gelato and semifreddo. Pasta dish had a lot of great flavors from herbs and capers, fresh noodles with tuna. The pizza was great and had great flavors, the other table had the pizza that was primarily vegetables if I recall, that looked wonderful as well, well probably order two pizzas and a main or pasta next time. Desserts were alright, semifreddo too sweet and the coconut gelato was overpowered by the chocolate in the gelato. Their Italian sodas were great also.
Nate C — Google review
We decided to meet a friend in Santa Cruz and because of their dog we chose this restaurant that offers outdoor seating restaurant is Quaintance small but the backyard is pretty large parking can be somewhat of a challenge, but we manage to find the location quickly. The selection is entirely Italian wines so if you’re looking for the New World wines, you’re gonna have a hard time finding anything, they have a large selection of Italian wines depending on your budget you can spend over several hundred dollars or you can find one for around $50-$60. The menu changes regularly and this particular night I decided to have the squid pasta with seafood I was disappointed to say the least because the flavor and when I asked for Parmesan, the waitress told me that they charge extra, part of the meal was the appetizers were very good and fresh made bread with butter a great start. They have heaters in the back which kept us warm. The short ribs were excellent

I am not usually one to go out to eat at an Italian restaurant. But, holy smokes, this place knocks your socks off. Plus, you'll get a nice glass of house red or white with any pizza or pasta dish (they also have gluten-free). Gabriella Café is a charming and intimate spot located in downtown Santa Cruz, offering a warm and romantic ambiance. The café takes pride in serving carefully sourced Italian cuisine with a focus on farm-to-table fare. The owner, Paul Cocking, heavily relies on local organic products to provide clean and healthy food for diners. Housed in a softly lighted bungalow, Gabriella Café has been serving fine foods and wines since December 1992.
In our party of 5, everyone was very pleased with their food. Beautiful atmosphere. I can't wait to go back for their pork entree and I am dreaming of the pumpkin panacotta!
Donna B — Google review
I visited Gabriella with the hope of enjoying a comforting Italian meal. The gnocchi were nicely plated, but the flavors didn’t quite meet expectations. The sausage tasted fairly generic, and the mushroom flavor was quite subtle. While the dish might appeal to a broader audience, it didn’t capture the depth and character I associate with traditional Italian cuisine. For the price point, I was expecting a bit more in terms of flavor and ingredient quality. That said, the setting is charming, and the staff was kind—there’s definitely potential with a few refinements.
Gianluca M — Google review
I really enjoyed my pasta, but I do wish it had larger pieces of mushrooms. The crispy brussel sprouts were pretty good, a little salty for me (but I like less salt). I think it is a little expensive for what we ordered, but it is in Santa Cruz. I wish I had more of the pasta after I finished my plate. The foccacia was really nice, so soft. I enjoyed my deconstructed affogato, and the brownie reminded me of the puercito Mexican sweet bread. I think a richer and more moist brownie would have fit better. I would have liked a bit more ice cream. Overall, I would return, but I think it is a bit pricey, so maybe every once in a while. The service was great, and our waitress was very nice too. I didn't enter the establishment, just the patio area, so that's the only pictures I have.
Rocio C — Google review
I read reviews highly recommending the cauliflower. Perhaps it placed my expectations much higher than it deserved. It was crisp but that's all that was enjoyable about it. Thank God the waitress recommended we also try the melon wrapped in prosciutto. It was a nice balance of sweet and salty and it was a refreshing appetizer. We also decided to try the Bigoli spaghetti. Loved the depth of the sauce so I forgave that the pasta was very slightly overcooked.

This cute lil place has some serious power packed food. Cauliflower is a must. Grilled peaches are so delicious. Every chew on the Gnocchi is memorable. The fall off the bone braised lambshank is heavenly. So glad to have been able to partake in this delightful place and their ambiance and food is made with love.

This place reminds me of something I would find in a quaint European city. The feeling is warm and friendly. The same staff has been there for years proving that the work environment is very special and it fells good to be at a place where staff is obviously well appreciated. The owner Paul is gracious and he is almost always there. It feels like going to someone’s home. The wine list is suburb and not overpriced. A true gem.

I have been several times, our lunch group goes a couple of times a year and always on our anniversary in September. We always sit outside and make our reservations in advance. The courtyard is really nice and when our group,is really big, they set up a long table for us just outside.

Cute cafe with patio seating. Don’t skip on the crispy cauliflower appetizer and the tagliatelle with bolognese- both fantastic. Skip on the weird butternut squash that comes with beets and apples, texture is missing on this one and the ravioli turns red from the beets. Service was fantastic and the mimosas with fresh squeezed OJ are on point. Definitely a place you should check out.

Crow's Nest Restaurant is a beloved seaside establishment located at the mouth of the Santa Cruz Harbor, offering breathtaking views of the Monterey Bay. With its exposed beams and casual American fare, it has become an institution over its forty-year history. Guests can enjoy marbled rib-eye and fresh-caught wild salmon while watching sailboats and catamarans come and go, with the possibility of spotting migrating whales. The restaurant also offers late-night live music and comedy upstairs after sunset.
Iconic Santa Cruz dining & entertainment hub in one of the top most scenic Santa Cruz locations. Let the crows be your spirit guide to bring here! We had a great time. We stopped in for the comedy night on Sunday. Definitely a great opportunity for comics to test their material amongst the SC brightest & best. There was a great special on appetizers & ordered a variety. All were great and plentiful for the group. Bar & table service was super helpful and friendly throughout. Thank you! Great spot on the ocean with outdoor seating upstairs or downstairs overlooking paddleboarders and boats on the water. Two different restaurants, but great food options either place. Hot fresh food, fast service, friendly staff, ample parking for a small fee. I had the fish and clam chowder and he had the French dip. Both yummy! And the pink lemonade was bomb!

Fun place right on the water with spectacular views! The service was excellent, the shrimp tacos and French fries were both very good, but the French Dip/au jus was so salty it was almost inedible. They were a bit busy so didn’t trouble trying something else, but definitely wouldn’t come back to that. I notice the table next to us ordered it too and barely touched it.

Beautiful location for an outdoor lunch! The upper deck was filled with sunshine and incredible views. Our server was fun and very informative, helping us make a few amazing choices. The Ahi Tuna app was incredible!

First time here. Very nice place. Good food, good views, good service. Close to the harbor and beach. Our table had a great view of the lighthouse! Staff said upstairs was bar and grill area (better for adults). Indoor and outdoor seating. Bathrooms are a bit tight but clean. They give a free coupon for soft serve at the beach market next door to our kid with his kids menu. Parking was $2 for our time there. We would come again if we are passing by for another coastal road trip!

The location is excellent, right by the harbor—though be aware that parking is not free. We didn’t have a reservation but were fortunate to get a window seat. The staff were friendly and welcoming. They offered free dessert for birthday. However, the food was just average. The pork ribs we ordered were lukewarm, and the center piece was slightly cold, which was disappointing.

The food is good but pricy And they messed up our order a few times and the hostess with volume big lashes (I don’t know her name ) that checked us in was not nice at all, Sometimes I wonder why these girls are in hospitality positions. Anyways If you’re ready for a long wait to get a cold meal to be on the beach then I’d say go for it .

Atmosphere is very nice! We sat in a table right next to the window and had a great ocean view, especially beautiful during sunset. Great salad bar option to add to your meal or to have as your meal, I live a good salad bar. Calamari appetizer was really delicious and tender. I ordered the spinach ravioli with shrimp and artichoke hearts and mushrooms. It was really good. Server was very attentive and was super nice to my kids. We will definitely be back.

Ice cream shop
The Penny Ice Creamery in Downtown Santa Cruz offers a unique experience with its eclectic and seasonal organic ice cream flavors served in a rustic space. Visitors can indulge in an affogato with dark chocolate sorbet drowned in local Verve Coffee Roasters espresso, creating a delightful hot-meets-cold sensation. Nearby, Buttercup Cakes & Farmhouse Frosting offers vegan cupcakes not to be missed.
I stopped by Penny Ice Creamery on a Saturday evening and had a great experience! We ordered the Dark Chocolate and Honey Walnut Yogurt Jam ice creams -- both were delicious. Each scoop comes topped with a house-made toasted marshmallow, which was a fun and tasty touch I'd never had before. What's also great is that you can sample as many flavors as you like before deciding -- and the options rotate daily, so there's always something new to try. The vibe was relaxed, and the staff was friendly. If you're in the area and craving something sweet with a twist, definitely give this place a try. I'd happily come back!

A delightful ice cream shop that provides great seasonal flavors and a few non-dairy options as well. The highlight here is definitely their marshmallow fluff for $1 atop a waffle cone, but it is also incredible how they're the only creamery in-town that makes their ice cream from scratch!

Cute little ice cream shop that’s fun to check out if you’re already hanging around downtown. The line is always long, so it becomes part of the experience They got seasonal and craft flavors so it's cool to try something new but the flavors that we got didn't really wow me. The inside is cute, but it’s not really a place you’d sit and hang out anyways. More of a grab your cone and go vibe. If you’re a tourist or just want to kill time with friends, it’s a fun stop. Food: 7/10 Service: 7/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Value: 6/10

I love the chocolate sorbet and the Thai tea ice cream! But the rotating menu can be hard to keep a favorite, and the price is a little too high for the amount of ice cream you're served. The staff are super nice and helpful! Always give great suggestions <3

Stumbled on this little oasis while walking the ‘mean streets’ of Santa Cruz. All kinds of flavors and friendliness here. Wouldn’t surprise me to see a banana slug flavor! There’s outdoor seating to enjoy your cone or cup in the sun. My kid loved his double dark chocolate. Grok says: The Penny Ice Creamery is a beloved artisan ice cream shop in Santa Cruz, California, renowned for crafting small-batch ice cream, sorbets, and treats entirely from scratch using local, organic, and seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farmers, ranchers, and foragers. Founded in 2010 by chef Kendra Baker—a UCSC alum with a passion for sustainable, farm-fresh desserts—and her partner Zachary E. Davis, it’s the only ice creamery in Santa Cruz (and one of the few in Northern California) with its own on-site dairy processing equipment, allowing full control from pasteurization to churning without pre-made bases, stabilizers, or preservatives. This commitment to sustainability extends to using 100% recycled, biocompostable packaging and even repurposing egg whites from their custard base into daily-made marshmallow meringue (torched fluff topping). Flavors rotate frequently, blending classic comforts with adventurous twists inspired by the Central Coast’s bounty—think wild-foraged herbs from the Santa Cruz Mountains or produce from local farms. It’s expanded from a single downtown spot to multiple locations, including recent Bay Area outposts, while maintaining a hippie-rooted, community-focused vibe that earned it a shoutout from Vice President Joe Biden in 2010 for its local impact.

Came on a quiet Saturday afternoon. Unfriendly staff Got a triple, but the ice cream honestly did not taste like the 4.5 star rating. (Overrated?) Got the apple sorbet, sweet potato, and bitter caramel.

This place has the best mint chocolate chip ice cream i have ever had. It's almost as if you can actually taste fresh mint leaves in the ice cream. Most other mint ice creams just use processed mint oil. This ice cream tastes like they use mint leaves that were foraged from one's own backyard.

This ice creamery has a treasure chest of flavors. It is evident that each artisanal flavor has been crafted with creativity and love. The bitter caramel is bold and inventive, and the toasted marshmallows made the flavor an adventure. The staff were as sweet as the ice cream itself, always ready to help you navigate their menu. I wish there was an expanded menu.

Wow, what a great restaurant. Lots of cool history and neat art. The food was incredible, the service amazing. Was not aware of this place, it came up and the other reviews were spot on. Highly recommend this place, go a little early to get a good seat, for awesome views of the beach and ocean and wharf.

As a local, I am very disappointed in myself at the fact that this was my first time visiting since the restaurant changed names. We went for my step mother’s birthday and I forgot how great the ambiance was here. We ordered for three and I only ordered a clam chowder and the bill was over $300. I was blown away by the view, but would never go here on my own if I was paying for sure. Their service was top-notch since my one year-old daughter spilled a soda and they quickly cleaned it up and didn’t make me feel bad. I hope I get to visit this restaurant again but not on my dime. There’s plenty of expensive restaurants that I would frequent and wouldn’t mind paying for, but unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. Nothing horrible just not worth what we paid for. Decor was on point and love the Jack O’Neill name and face associated with here.

This place incorporates some of the history of Jack O’Neill the surf pioneer and creator of the O’Neill surf brand; it serves various fish based dishes in a family friendly restaurant. The staff is super nice, polite and helpful. The fish dishes share an interesting trait: fish is very fresh and cooked to perfection, however little attention seems to be paid to the rest, leaving you with a great piece of fish floating in an insipid bouillon and undercooked beans. The place itself is an older vibe hotel. The restaurant has put effort in decoration but it still feels a bit old, they could make good progress by changing to couches. At the end of the day, you get a decent but overpriced meal in an OK location.

We come here frequently and the food never disappoints. Their fresh made sourdough toast is always fluffy and amazing! They added fresh figs to their fruit which elevated it to the next level! You can’t ask for a better view, anytime of the day (or night)!

Perfection! Food, service, atmosphere were all easily 5 stars. Amazing coffee (roast of the year winner). We savored every bite of our food and talked about it afterward. There was even something special about the pancakes and I'm a breakfast connoisseur. Price was very fair, too, especially considering the quality. Will be back!

There's something amazing about their dinner service. Lunch is good every time I visit but dinner has an extra layer of magic. The cavier with onion dip is one of the best appetizers. I had the striploin and prawns. The meat was tender and juicy. The romesco sauce was incredible. I could not stop eating it. I wanted a bowl of it. The portion could have been shared. It was my birthday. They brought me a cupcake. I appreciate gestures like this. I also ordered the ice cream trio to share. It had buttermilk, root beer float and an anise with black raspberries. Wow, that anise ice cream was a surprise. I need to learn how to make my own. I can't wait to return for dinner.

Bear restaurant in this area with an amazing sea view seating. Food was authentic, delicious and really worth the price. Ordered desserts at the end, cookies with caramel ice cream was amazing and must have.

Went here on 8/31/2025 as a late birthday celebration and could not be more satisfied with the service. Not only was the view and food delicious but our server Cristhian was phenomenal. I am pleased to say this has been one of the best customer experiences I have ever received, he was attentive/respectful and catered to our needs perfectly. With staff like this, it is no wonder the atmosphere of the overall restaurant was great. I will definitely be coming again and hope to get Cristhian as my server !! Cristhian thank you for making this a 10/10 experience.
