Sights & Landmarks
Empire Mine State Historic Park, the site of California's oldest gold mine, offers visitors miles of scenic trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park features the historic Bourn Cottage, a mine yard with a blacksmith shop, and extensive grounds to explore. As one of the most prosperous gold mines in history, it produced 5.8 million ounces of gold and played a significant role in Grass Valley's development.
Great place with lots of history. I've been coming to Grass Valley for years now and never knew about this place. Learned a lot by wandering around. Didn't get a guided tour in time, book early. Still enjoyed reading signs and listening to information.
Holly H — Google review
Beautiful historic park that covers the h history of the empire mine on one side and the lovely property and grounds of the rich and famous. What struck me, is that the large 4000+sf house was the summer property of this family. Great escape from the heat and close to town to get ice creams before heading back down the hill.

This was our second time visiting this historic park. We were there during 4 July weekend, so there were a lot of visitors and the guided tours were booked luckily that the first time when we were there, we got the opportunity to enjoy the guided tour. There were a lot of free parking. The entrance fee is only five dollars. I like that the park is dog friendly. There were a lot of picnic tables. We brought foods and drinks, had a picnic and enjoyed the meals under the trees.
Jee S — Google review
This is a place you must visit if you are in area. Fascinating history and amazing work. The estate is gorgeous, not to mention the gift shop! A must-see destination. You will not be disappointed. There are restrooms, places to have a picnic, and admission is reasonable.
Shawna S — Google review
A $5 adult entry fee, in addition to the historical area, also gives you access to three 45-minute to 1.5-hour tours: garden, cottage, and mining, as well as a volunteer tour guide sharing all the fun facts they know about the history and place!
Yiwen D — Google review
We enjoyed the site and took 2 tours with an excellent story teller leading. You can see how the wealthy mine owners lived alongside the place where workers performed hazardous jobs for long hours.

This vibrant venue showcases the talents of local artists, poets, and writers while also featuring iconic works from California's best creatives. Fantastic small venue. Very comfortable seats, great drinks, and exceptional staff/volunteers. The only issue is parking. Only ~20 spots in the back. Get there early or reserve. Highly recommended

My first time at this Venue, glad we made the drive from Fair Oaks. Great staff, good sound system and layout. Will be returning now that I'm a member. We saw Christine "Kingfish" Ingram a young blues guitar virtuoso, the show was great. 👍
Duane C — Google review
This was my first time at the Center for the Arts, and I had a wonderful time. It's a nice venue - just the right size. And I was very impressed with the seating arrangements. The seats are comfortable, at just the right angle so no one blocks your view, and has enough leg room for a very tall person! My only two complaints are that there were continuous issues with the sound, and that a few of the volunteers did not seem to be well informed. Even though it's quite a distance from my home in Roseville, I'm looking forward to going back.

Attended The Kiffness concert in April '25. This is a smaller venue that is an ideal size for a small city. Everyone in the auditorium has a good view of the performance from the front to the back. Adult beverages are available for purchase prior to the performance. This was a first concert for me at this venue and a neat surprise.
Jey Y — Google review
Amazing venue, great seats, cocktails, sound excellent, artist art show cased available for purchase. Staff friendly helpful easy checking, our tickets were at wilcall. Highly recommend if you have not experienced it yet. Parking a little challenging but it was not horrible. Sincerely, Eileen Bonner Notary Public American River Notary & Apostille

I had not been inside The Center since it was redone in early 2020. What a beautiful venue! My daughter and I went to see a play and had a fabulous time! The staff were courteous and efficient. The facility is clean and beautiful. I’ll definitely be back!

This review is for Saint Josephs Rose Garden! Located at 410 South Church Street in Grass Valley ( next to thrift store). Nice serene place with beautiful roses and fountains. Benches to enjoy the beauty! Open from 10am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Hidden gem!

A very beautiful historical location. The staff/ volunteers are so nice and kind. I appreciate the communication and knowledge they share. I recommend anyone and everyone visit and learn about this amazing gem. The facility is available for events/ rental and it is worth it. It’s a diamond in the ruff……..

This building holds a special charm you need to experience to understand, so I recommend you go visit on a Wednesday thru Sunday in the early afternoon. Free tours from an amazing volunteer staff and there's public access to the Russell Rose Garden. This spot is especially great if you're interested in local, women's, or children's history.

We saw a vintage wedding dress show here last Saturday and it was incredible. I brought my mother to see her mother's dress in the show. There were 12 different dresses displayed by the models. My mother said she had never seen her mother's dress outside of the box it was stored in.
Rob W — Google review
Hard to rate. It's really interesting as an old building, but isn't the most comfortable as a venue. Its 'oldness' added to the atmosphere of the play performed there, but the folding chairs were uncomfortable by the end. Lots of walking challenges, sloping floors, stairs, poor lighting. If you go at night, bring a seat pad and a flashlight. Enjoy the ambience!

Association / Organization
When visiting Grass Valley, a trip to the downtown area is a must. The Grass Valley Downtown Association embodies the town's warm and proud community spirit, offering a charming blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy. The pedestrian-friendly streets are lined with diverse shops, eateries, and entertainment options. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy events such as film festivals, car shows, night markets, Cornish Christmas celebrations, and more.
For me Grass Valley downtown wins this year: best decorated downtown for Christmas. Judge for yourself from attached pics. Beautiful. I was originally going for an event in Nevada City but decided to checkout hotel in downtown Grass Valley in case we wanted to stay over. The beautiful Christmas decor just amazed me ❤️😍🤩Great job Grass Valley

Grass Valley is a sweet and very friendly town that is filled with the history of Gold discovery in the mid 1800's. Historical downtown is filled with one of a kind stores, antique stores, restaurants and more. There is plenty to do: camping, hiking, skiing, rivers and lakes, music, wineries, art galleries, historical sites and much, much, more. The best thing is, it's family oriented with plenty of things to do with your children.

Grass Valley is a fun town with good places to shop and eat. I love the Hillbrooke Hotel for lodging. It's been beautifully updated with a nice bar and live music. I visit often.
Valli H — Google review
This little town is full of history and Charm. A visit to the “ghosts” at the Historic Holbrooke Hotel will leave you wanting to learn more about those who past in steps before you. A visit to either of the two beautiful bookstores in town will help fill your historic interests and if you are like me, full your suitcases with literary treasures. We were fortunate to visit in October and the entire downtown was decorated for fall and Halloween- it was like stepping into a Hallmark movies or Gilmore’s-Stars Hollow . All the business were friendly and welcoming . Antique buffs will love the downtown consignment shops and there is sure to be an item on your must have list in one of the many booths. This is a place to spend s day or two to just relax.

History museum
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, situated in Grass Valley, California, houses a remarkable collection of narrow gauge railroad equipment and memorabilia from the historic Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. The museum also features aviation artifacts, photographs, and documents. Additionally, it offers insights into the history of Grass Valley. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibits to gain a deeper understanding of local transportation from a bygone era.
All I can say is this place is amazing! Run by a very talented and knowledgeable group of volunteers the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Museum is a local gem. Showcasing local railroad history and artifacts the indoor museum is outstanding. The real jewel is the steam engines, there are 2, and all the other rolling stock. Their Steam Up events are a must see for any railfan. This past weekend there were 4 options for guests to ride. The entire staff is friendly and helpful from buying tickets, gifts, or riding a Narrow gauge train. I highly recommended this place.

Wonderful experience with my family (husband, two young kids) visiting today. Our docent Sandy spent time showing us around the museum, and looking at all the locomotives. It was the highlight of my 3 year old son’s birthday trip! Thank you!

It’s Free entrance and free parking. People are nice and personal. It’s good to spend 1 to 2 hours to stay, to listen, to watch. Strongly recommend to come early to get in the train. Open Saturday Sunday 10am to 4pm, Monday Tuesday Friday 10am to 4pm. We are really enjoying to be here. There’s a gift shop inside. You might find some special stuff there.

Excellent experience with my son. We both love trains and it was very beautiful that day with the weather. Many people supporting the museum which is great. We left a donation doing our part. Really enjoyed the ice cream and hot dogs in the meadow after the train rides. Definitely plan on going back for the October date. Always and enjoyable environment. Highly recommended

Really an AMAZING facility! Friendly & enthusiastic staff, all are dedicated volunteers. Train rides abound (steam on some days) that travels through very scenic route with tall pines & beautiful meadows.
Dennis O — Google review
We had great time visiting today! The museum is cool! The train ride was spectacular even though the train was robbed😁 It was a seasonal event. Our son is wheel chair bound and the staff were spectacular in making sure he was able to enjoy all of the events! You don't see such great customer service and kind people very often these days.
Stacy S — Google review
Such a fun experience with kids. The museum is interesting, and the people there are so knowledgeable and kind. We went during one of the weekends when you can go on the train. Parking was easy to find, there was no wait, and going on the train was really fun for both adults and kids.
Amber — Google review
We had a good experience aside from one lady that was having us buy tickets and helping us on the train, she was pretty rude. Aside from her, everything else was great. Beautiful meadow with a train ride. We enjoyed our experience with our toddler.

Restaurant
Grass Valley Pasty Co, located at 100 S Auburn St in Grass Valley, CA, prides itself on making dough from scratch daily using only the finest ingredients. Their pasties are freshly made every day and served hot for a delightful dining experience. The Cousin Jack with skirt steak is a popular choice for those looking to savor the traditional Cornish pasties brought by mining migrants from Cornwall, England during the Gold Rush era.
We have been here two times this month! Delightful pasties. Their chicken mushroom one is my favorite. The staff is very friendly and they even treated our pup to a steak treat. We bought some of their frozen pastries to cook at home (had to try all five varieties!) and they baked beautifully and tasted just as good as the ones in the shop. The pastry was not compromised.
Yuliya P — Google review
Yummy filling pasty! We got a cousin jack pasty to try and it had potatoes and beef wrapped in a buttery dough.
Yiwen D — Google review
This place is great! This was actually my second visit to this place, originally I stopped by about 2-3 years ago, and it was amazing then also. I got the cousin Jack, and it was amazing. My friends the the pork one, and they loved it. This is only place I’ve ever had a pasty at, and it has certainly set the bar high. The bread on the pasty is so flaky and crispy. You can see the bakers making everything right behind the counter. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I am certainly coming back. It’s on the corner of the street, with a mine cart out front. It’s a cool little gem, that is definitely worth visiting.
Bob B — Google review
Such great pastys! The crust is so fresh and fluffy buttery goodness. They make so many different flavors and unique twists and variations of fillings every week. Get there early to get the best flavors of the week. They sell out fast of those. Parking can be a bit tricky sometimes but just use the lot across the street or go straight through the light passed the restaurant and down the one way street and there is a second parking area on the right. Go try them they are so good!
Victoria G — Google review
To be fair, if you've never had pasties from other places, these would be enjoyable. Ordered a Cousin Jack. Taste of filling was good, but have had better. Bread is biscuits texture, not flaky as authentic pasties should be. If paying high prices is your thing, this mostly biscuit bread with a moderate amount of filling, this is the place for you.
Mike C — Google review
If you have a common allergy, don’t ask the staff at GV pasty if they sell something you can eat. When I asked if they happen to have gluten free pasties available, I was told, “No. we don’t. It’s really difficult to make good gluten free dough. If you can figure it out, you’ll be RICH.” Just had excellent GF pasties in another beautiful Cornish mining town in Michigan. The total population there was about 15 and someone there figured it out. If you haven’t, a simple, “no, we don’t have them,” is all a customer needs to know.
Nicole M — Google review
After seeing pasties featured in the New York Times, I had to check them out. I am so glad I did! Such a cute little shop, such amazing service and fabulously delicious pasty! I tried the chicken, and I will be back to try all the others as soon as I can return. sSo cool to eat something tied to such a rich history in the area. Definitely come check them out!
Emily P — Google review
As a Michigander, this was like a step back home. I grew up eating pastys. So delicious. My son and I stepped in here a couple weeks ago and both picked out a pasty. He chose the chicken with artichoke instead of mushroom and I got a pulled pork. Yum! Other than the small location that doesn't easily accommodate sitting down, I give it a 5/5. Customer service was wonderful as well. Very down to earth friendly people. Will revisit!

South Pine Cafe-Grass Valley is a beloved family-owned restaurant in Grass Valley known for serving delicious comfort food all day long. The owners are dedicated to using farm-to-table ingredients, which has earned them high praise from locals. Their menu highlights include the Carne Asada Burrito, Spicy Jamaican Chicken Burrito, Garlic Onion Burger, Pine Burger, and Southwestern Turkey Mel. We visited with a group of friends and had such a great time. The restaurant had a great variety of options - mostly American and some Mexican, Asian, and vegetarian options. They offer fresh juices, coffee options, and other drinks as well. There was beautiful artwork on the walls for sale, a great mix of 80's music playing in the background, and attentive staff.

The food here is absolutely delicious and the staff are so welcoming and friendly. We found ourselves loving the sense of community that comes from having such great energy from each and everyone working here. My wife and I even came here immediately after our wedding ceremony! We'd love coming here even if the food wasn't as incredible as it is, luckily, there's no concessions made when you can have your great vibes and eat them too.

It's a small place with with a large taste! This was the place for us and our Vegan friend to all find something we would love! We had the Lobster Benny, Lobster Scramble, The Portabello Tofu Scramble and the Chile Rell the reno Special. All made to perfection. I had the Jalapeno Hollandaise sauce on the side...it's so good. BlackBerry/Mango Jam and the Habanero sauce are a must. It's a bit loud Inside and we waited about 30+ mins, but well worth it!

Middle Eastern restaurant
MeZe Eatery in Grass Valley is a haven for organic, non-GMO food enthusiasts. Their menu features delectable options like the Chicken Shawarma Sandwich, made with free-range, organic chicken marinated in traditional Middle Eastern spices and served with hummus, Israeli salad, greens, and house-made sauerkraut in freshly baked pita bread.
I am happy to see more ethnic food in small town Grass Valley. They make THE best falafel! The hummus bowl is huge and perfect for sharing with a friend or two. The restaurant is comfortable and clean. I love the water dispenser for customers. It is useful and ornate.
Raybies F — Google review
The food was fresh and homemade but we didn’t like some of the flavors. The chicken schwarma was bland and the other additions to the plate didn’t really add much flavor. The hummus was meh, and the rice was decent. The beef/lamb schwarma had more flavor and was enjoyable. The service was fast and the interior is nice and cozy. I had the chicken schwarma pita on another occasion and enjoyed it, so I’d probably get that again over the schwarma plate. Still quality food but not large portions on the meat for the price.

Fresh, healthy, beautiful food that is so tasty. Delicious dips. Super kind staff. I went twice on my two day visit!
Jamie C — Google review
I wish I could give 4.5 stars. First visit, very large menu. Counter service. Indoor and outdoor seating. Very little street parking but a nice free city parking lot just a block away. My wife ordered a half pita chicken shawarma that she enjoyed very much. It is very nice that they offer half pitas. The pita bread was very fresh. I ordered a beef and lamb kabob pita. Very tasty, lots of veggies. I almost thought that they gave me the wrong order because the first thing on top was a falafel piece. It was very tasty. But that was a bonus, the meat was further down. The meat was also very tasty, but I wasn’t expecting it to be ground meat. I was thinking chunks of meat. So I’m taking a star off. Nice place, food made fresh to order, I would come back , but I would order something else.
Charlie R — Google review
I moved away a couple years ago, but I never left a review about how great this place is. It’s easily the best organic heady restaurant in the area. They also stood up to some seriously stupidness during the COVID years and i remembered that today and really appreciated it so I thought I’d come back and give them a good review. Good on you dudes!

Italian restaurant
Cirino's at Main Street is an old-school Italian bar and grill located in a cozy, brick-walled setting. It offers a blend of casual and fine dining experiences for families, friends, locals, and tourists. The restaurant features a separate bar with an extension of the menu and a Tapas menu. Visitors can enjoy small-plate dishes along with beverages such as beer, wine, or the famous Cirino Bloody Mary.
We entered the restaurant mid day around 4pm to enjoy a couple of appetizers and cocktails. Andrea our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the wines and menu selections. It was so refreshing to have a server who knows their products. Our party ordered a glass of wine 🍷, old fashion (which was too sweet and had multiple ice cubes vs one large ice cube or ball) and Tito's vodka. The appetizers we enjoyed were a bowl of clam chowder, very tasty, a plate of their calamari made in flat strips (my favorite), no tentacles, and the polenta with chili. The food and service by hit the spot for a mid day break.
Debbie H — Google review
Our first visit to Cirino’s was a fantastic experience. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. Unsure of what to order, I asked for recommendations, and every dish, from the appetizer to the dessert, was outstanding. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. Our waitress was not only attentive but also elegantly introduced us to the dessert options, which were as delightful as they were beautifully presented. While our total came to $91, the quality and experience made it well worth the price. Highly recommended! 💕

This place is amazing. The customer service, food, and overall restaurant are 5 star worthy. Shout out to Shondra; she took great care of me and my parents for dinner tonight. Try the polenta appetizer, risotto and cobbler!
Lisa S — Google review
I've been to this restaurant over the span of twenty years. And over the last few years, it's just not like it used to be. The eggplant parmesan was a scant serving and not very good. The olives are great as usual. The caesar salad dressing was so vinegary. It literally burned my mouth. We sat there for fifteen minutes after being seated before we were paid any attention to or anyone came to our table. Overall, it wasn't a great experience. And I don't think I'll be back. Prices are what you would expect for Grass valley area.

We were recommended to dine in Cirino’s after our car club drive to Reno was halted by the snow storm. Cirino’s accommodated our party of 20 with no reservations, and created an amazing dining experience for all of us. Our waitress was correct when she told us everything on the menu was good. Even with our party size, food and drinks came out quickly and refills were ordered and served before us asking. Food was delicious! Love it when a restaurant serves warm bread, and the sourdough bread basket was an amazing start to a delicious meal. Lobster dip with pita chips was amazing and great to share. The dip was warm and creamy and melts in your mouth. I was torn between ordering clam chowder and French onion soup, and I don’t think you could go wrong with either one. Shrimp risotto was cooked to al dente, but I preferred mine to be more creamy than crunchy. Rib eye was served with mashed potatoes and on a bed of grilled vegetables. 7 layer chocolate cake was very rich and dense if that’s your preference.
Bessie G — Google review
It's always a good time with excellent food at Cirino's! They're bloody mary's are bomb. Same with everything else I've had there over the years. The pastas, burgers, salads, soups, appetizers, all of it! My favories are the calamari and French onion soup. The calamari is unlike any other. Here, it is flat, tenderized steaks. Not rubber rings or near-whole critters. I prefer to sit on the bar side. There's usually some awesome, forgotten classic rock tunes playing. There is also an entrance to the back patio. You can take your drink with you, if you want to smoke.
Raybies F — Google review
After living here for two years, we finally made it to this restaurant and it was absolutely worth the wait! We started with the calamari, which was perfectly crispy and flavorful, then moved on to our entrées: lobster ravioli and mushroom risotto with chicken thighs. Every bite was cooked to perfection. To finish, we indulged in tiramisu and bread pudding, both rich, decadent, and the perfect ending to the meal. The service was outstanding, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere made the whole experience even better.
Tracey S — Google review
Haven't been out for lunch in awhile, so invited my friend Joy from Auburn to lunch on a Friday at 1:00. My half order of chicken alfredo noodles was excellent. Iced tea, excellent. Service, excellent. Friend had Cirino's version of a Waldorf salad with boiled egg, excellent. Why have I waited so long to have lunch there?

Mexican restaurant
Maria's Mexican Restaurant is a delightful spot that captures the essence of traditional Mexican dining in Grass Valley. With its bright and airy ambiance, adorned with charming decor, it offers a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for enjoying authentic flavors. The menu boasts an array of classic dishes like enchiladas, tacos, and burritos that are sure to satisfy any craving for Mexican cuisine. Guests rave about the generous portions and friendly service, making every visit memorable.
I showed my clients homes for sale around Grass Valley today, and they took me to one of my favorite restaurants “Maria’s Mexican Restaurant,” which has awesome food and decor and service. It’s very popular, so parking can be limited, and the food took some time to be prepared, but worth the wait.
Kathryn S — Google review
Called in a to-go for order and showed up about the time it was supposed to be ready. The lady who took payment was not friendly and didn’t get our food out to us. We sat on a bench until the host asked us if we were still waiting on the order. Sure enough, she left our food sitting on the counter in the back. Asked for no sour cream on the tostada, but here it is… Too bad the entire staff is not as “on the ball” as the host. He was a day-saver!

Great restaurant, vast menu options. The enchilada sauce was superb, and my wife loved her chicken fajitas! Their salsa was unique and delicious. Alexis was attentive and personable. Very large portions, we ate almost 1/2 of our entrees - we arrived not super hungry after a big lunch. Maria’s is excellent!

Overall, wouldn’t come again. Expensive, decent experience, food could be better Service: medium, nice but not sure if they were super busy or forgot to check in, we ended up going up front to pay due to long wait Food: I’ve had cheaper fast food Mexican that tasted better. Big portions tho Value: overpriced imho Drinks: Decent, could’ve been better. Good size Things to consider: Indoor and outdoor dining. Limited parking, good luck. We had a 20 min wait w the parking lot full. Ended up parking elsewhere and walking

Drove from Fair Oaks to Grass Valley for our anniversary #61 . Been going there for over 20 years. Yes the food and service are that good. Yummy

Maria’s is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Grass Valley. They have delicious enchiladas. The atmosphere is fantastic! Our server, Jamie, was top notch! Probably one of the best servers in town (and as business owners, we eat out 5-6 nights a week). Thank you, Jamie!

have been going to Maria’s Mexican Food in Grass Valley for years. The last three visits have not been great. The food is still decent but nothing memorable, and the service has been pretty mediocre. It is not rude service, but it feels like the staff is just going through the motions. I understand it is one of the main spots for Mexican food in town, and the atmosphere is comfortable enough. Still, it feels more like the place people go out of habit rather than because it is truly great. Three stars feels fair. I might go back if I am in the area, but it is no longer a place I look forward to.

The bar was setup so well for Halloween. The food was amazing, the service was perfect. All the sports in different places around the bar. Highly recommend. The online men you can search by gluten free and that is huge for me.
