Sights & Landmarks
The Mammoth Site is a museum and research center that showcases numerous mammoth remains preserved in an ancient sinkhole. It is home to the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world, with 61 mammoths discovered so far. The site was found in 1974 and provides insight into the area's prehistoric past through ongoing excavations that visitors can observe.
Very cool walk through place. There are QR codes to give you more info to what you are seeing. During our visit people were working on excavating bones and cleaning them. Staff is super friendly and good with answering kids questions and getting them involved. The gift shop is cute with a variety for everyone. There is a cheap food stand outside that has good food and drinks available.
Gwen W — Google review
Wonderful exhibit with great interactive displays that even have audio to listen on your smartphone. They had much more to see at this museum than I expected including arrowheads from 10,000+ years ago. The outside has a display of rocks from many different epochs which was neat and free. There’s also a little food stand near the entrance with good prices.
Courtney — Google review
Absolutely a must stop. Great self guided interpretive walk indoors and attached displays. Amazing to see actual numerous skeletal remains in-situ. Thourghly enjoyed this stop on our vacation. Spent about 1.5 hours at site and read almost every info station... It was really well done and informative.
Brandy T — Google review
If you have kids this is a MUST stop! My kids loved it. We went through it pretty quickly (2hours) but probably needed more like 3-4. We just didn’t have the time to stay. Prices are about $13/person. Military is $1 off I believe. They have a large gift shop as well that you exit through. You start by watching an educational video that is about 13 minutes long. Then you move in to the dog site. This is still active and they said they found a new fossil last Sunday! All of the volunteers are helpful and well-spoken. The internet is kind of hit or miss for the listening tour. I would like to see that improved for their guests. One employee was rather rude when I spoke to them about it. The rest were great! My kids bought a bag of rocks and fossils at the end to use the sifting/panning equipment outside to see what treasures they got.
Jill H — Google review
Wow what an amazing experience! You can watch a film, go view the dig site, see other fossils and bones they’ve discovered and then browse the gift shop. If you need a ride from the parking lot to the center, a ride can be provided. Lots of parking and washrooms on site. A great place for the whole family to enjoy. You can even watch as new bones are discovered, cleaned up and preserved. Highly recommend you visit this mammoth site!
Adventures C — Google review
Fascinating place. The central display of the mammoth site is intriguing . Spotting the various parts of each mammoth was fun, and wondering how there were so many there in one spot. The displays are very informative .
Catherine S — Google review
Museum with lots of history. There are a total of 61 mammoths found there. There is a big hole in the middle where some people are working on finding and preserving more bones. You can walk around the “ dig hole “ and see all of the found bones. Very cool experience for all ages
Tim F — Google review
Solid visit. Great stop if you in the area with family. Picnic bench for rest, plenty of shade outside, and a great active dig site inside. 4 kids with the party all had excellent things they liked about the visit. The two youngest were able to pan for fossils from the gift shop. Oldest 2 found pins and souvenirs coins to keep. Highly recommend.

We had so much fun @ Evans Plunge. The water was delightful and there’s a sauna so I was able to go from hot to cool! I highly recommend Evans Plunge as it is great fun for the entire family! Hope to go back soon!
Marija C — Google review
I went here when I was pretty little on a family vacation and again when I was in junior high. I haven't been back since but on a family trip with my own now I said we had to go back. My husband was ready to skip it and wasn't sure he wanted to go. However, we decided last minute let's just do it. We didn't really have anything else planned and it would be fun. We went and spent more time than anticipated here. We loved it. Even us big kids enjoyed the slides! My husband enjoyed trying his luck on the swinging handle bars. He made it all the way across! It wasn't super busy which I was worried it might be. We were there over the 4th of July holiday. We went on a Monday morning around 10:00. We stayed until 2:00 or so. We had lunch there on picnic table in the parking lot. After we got home my said he wanted to back. We will definitely make this a thing whenever we visit the black hills!
KJH — Google review
As guests from out of town, we wanted to visit a hot spring but weren't sure what to expect. One visit and we would highly recommend taking the time to relax in the warm waters. The highlight was watching kids attempt to swing from ring to ring, some succeeding, some falling, but fun to watch. They offer 2 types of indoor slides, a steep quick plunge and a slow luge like slide. There is also volleyball and basketball and a kiddie pool, which we didn't enter but we loved the whale spout. Locker rooms are convenient too, small and large lockers available, private changing area, and showers to rinse off.
Jeremy K — Google review
Well done, Hot Springs, SD! We weren't sure what to expect, but this stop did not disappoint. A natural hot springs turned into a city recreation center but still capturing the historical preservation. The kids would have stayed all day but we actually didn't plan ahead for this stop. Make sure to book a day in this amazing town and let the kids/family enjoy the natural springs and well designed swim park!!
Julie P — Google review
Very nice swimming place. Family friendly. The bottom of the indoor pool is smooth rocks :) bring quarters to rent the lockers. There is a change machine but no atm. They sell swimsuits if you forget yours . There are food and drinks available to purchase at reasonable prices and the staff is really friendly and helpful!
Gwen W — Google review
Fun place to be on a rainy day bring swim shoes for tender feet it's gravel bottom. Kids had a blast, go early it gets crowded
Darren H — Google review
We had such a blast! Well worth the price! Family fun, the slides are super cool, hot tub were so nice and relaxing! The water felt so nice! Nothing like a regular pool! The showers were nice. The lockers were a little annoying but everything else was great and fun! Plenty to do!
A W — Google review
Very fun place to visit. The water slides are awesome. The locker rooms are clean with separate individual dressing rooms, nice showers, small size and large size lockers to store your belongings. They also rent towels. They have water toys like noodles and barbells.BIG parking lot. Had a big gift store. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Anyone that gives this place less than 5 stars is clinically insane. Probably the coolest swimming hole I have ever been to. The water is beautiful and there are a bunch of different spots to explore
Blake M — Google review
Really nice area and waterfall! Looks like a great place to swim. The water is clear and beautiful.
Greg A — Google review
Beautiful water place deep swimming hole on the left shallow watering hole on the upper right. BE CAREFUL!! I BROKE MY ANKLE jumping into the shallow pool up top. The slanted ground in the water twisted my ankle BAD. ENTERVTHE WATER SLOWLY and you'll have a nice time
G. — Google review
Gorgeous trio of waterfalls on the way up to Black Hills! My wife and I love waterfalls so we wanted to stop and check these out. We both were prepared to be underwhelmed but we actually loved the area. It wasn’t warm enough to take a dip but we did enjoy the short walk down to the falls and taking a minute to stretch and take the beauty in.
Leah B — Google review
This place was really neat to go to on a hot summer day. I gave it four stars only because it needs just a little bit of improvement. If the jumping off spot could be leveled (One guy with a shovel and 10 minutes) it would make it much more convenient and easier to jump in without fear of slipping. The water was,and I’m sure, is always bracing and refreshing! While my brother and I were there several others that came and went. We were surprised, as we just happened upon it. They even have a picnic table and easy access route down to the lake. No one swimming had a real bathing suit. I just stripped down to my skivvies and jumped in, as did others. Seriously, if you’re close to, or see a mention of Cascade Falls, drive to The falls. Pack a lunch if you’ve got the time to eat at their covered area, and take a swim!
Michael T — Google review
Fantastic little swim holes with something for everyone! Lots of different size waterfalls, but the current is not overpowering! Being the kids, they will live it!

Park on a large reservoir with 36 miles of shoreline & 4 campgrounds popular with anglers & boaters.
Wonderful place! Camp spots are big and plenty of campgrounds to pick from. The lake is beautiful, and clean. The campground managers keep the property looking great.
Christine A — Google review
Amazing campground. We stayed in the Cheyenne loop, which was small with a playground and shower house. It was perfect. Site 2 was very nice, site 17 is private with an epic view of the water. Pizza joint up on the weekends, marina with snacks, a very long paved biked trail which was awesome. Highly recommend. Hot springs is about 5 miles down the road which has laundry, restaurants, gas / diesel and alot to do.
Ryan — Google review
This is a great place really has bathrooms. It has plenty of place to paddle. The scenery is awesome and I recommend it to anybody to spend the day out on it.a little crowded on the weekends lots of parking

Really enjoyed the park! Only suggestion is to make sure you know what is open and when. It gets pretty quiet Mondays and Tuesdays of a normal week.
Steve W — Google review
Great views and plenty of space! Would love to come back again when weather is better.
Caitlin C — Google review
This is a great park. Very clean easy walk to the water. Kid and dog friendly. Only thing negative is that they charge out of state visitor's more fee's. The reason we stay at state and federal parks is to help with our travel budget.
Shonda B — Google review
Stayed here a few times. Star gazing is beautiful for the southern sky, minimal light saturation. Water level is low enough now you can walk and encompass the entire lake! Great affordable rental options at the main office for a kayak, canoe, paddle board, and Lilly pads. Definitely worth the stay if water sports are your game. Bring sunscreen!

Wow, what an amazing mueseum. It was epic and only 6 bucks each. They have so much to look at it, it was incredible. The history, the archives and the collections were some of the best I've seen. We had a great time exploring. Thank you.

I stopped here after noticing a sign for it, it wasn’t on my plans for the day. I’m happy I did stop in. The worker immediately greets you and gives an interesting talk about the history of the building. There is quite a large and eclectic assortment of items and displays. This is a true history museum. The admission price is low as well.
Thirteendays — Google review
A beautiful old school converted to a historical museum. A lot of interesting items to view. Older people can see if they remember them and younger people can learn about the past. Good for the whole family.
Jeff A — Google review
They have a massive antique collection. Such a wide variety too. The place still has the old woodworking. You can go to all floors. Super cheap to get in $6. Its worth a trip. There's a wooly mammoth place just a couple miles down the road.
David H — Google review
Definitely worth a visit! We stayed in Keystone and took a drive past the wind cave national park and the wild life loop, down to hot springs. Absolutely wonderful.
Paulina H — Google review
It's a great museum for such a small town. Lots of stuff to look at and read! Thank you to our tour guide, Cal. We deeply appreciate your kindness and would love to go back to Hot Springs!
Mac — Google review
Okay this place was so amazing to see!! It is 4 floors plus a basement. I dont suggest small children or ancy adults because there is so much to read and look at. They do have an elevator for handicap or if you cannot walk stairs unfortunately you miss some spots that are only accessible by about 8-10 steps. One thing I loved about this museum was the fact you could actually touch some things as well as look in the old books! Downfall do not go on a hot day because it is sweltering in there with no A.C. and the higher up you went the hotter it got. The overlook was pretty and hard to believe kids walked up that hill and stairs in all kinds of weather. It is the epitome of "when I was a kid...". The lady at the front was really neat to sit and talk with.
Shannon C — Google review
It's housed in the old 4 story school building. Each floor has a different theme or subject matter. I would go early in the morning or on a cool day as it's not air conditioned.

The Kitchen Ink is a newly discovered gem with a welcoming staff and a limited but satisfying menu. The Ranger Rick basket offers homemade fries and a unique Mexican-spiced pasta salad, while the meatloaf sandwich comes with an intriguing sauce that might have hints of BBQ and wine. Although the outdoor area may be affected by nearby construction, the quick service and delicious food make it worth visiting. The Sunday afternoon experience was delightful, featuring incredibly tasty and generously sized pancakes as well as a flavorful Bison burger.
Great little spot. Has a very good black bean burger. BB burger: 9/10 Fries: 7/10 Fried pickles: 8/10

Stopped by here while visiting a hot spring since it was recommended to us. It is very easy to find but parking can be kind of a pain. The place is small so you might have to wait as few minutes until a table opens up since you seat yourself. They were on the full side so the service was on the slow side. The waitress was nice service but seemed like they didn't want to be there. The food was good but nothing I would get excited about. The dinner menu has a lot of good options that I would like to try. I might stop by here again, maybe.
Matt D — Google review
My husband and I were glad the lunch place someone had recommended didn't work out. This is our kind of place. We were greeted upon entering by a friendly, relaxed waitress. We enjoyed the calm and out of the ordinary environment and the yummy homemade food and kombucha. The shrimp I had ordered was hand breaded and juicy. The deep fried mushrooms also were hand breaded and delicious. My husband enjoyed the Cuban sandwich. They packed plenty of meat on there. The kombucha was spendid and had plenty of fizz. I like the fact everything is a la carte, so you can order exactly what you want/like. We don't live in the area, but we will be back.

Delicious homemade sides and sandwiches! Black bean burger fell apart when I forgot to take photograph before digging in! 🤣 we had the black bean burger, chicken salad and buffalo burger with sweet potato fries, potato salad and pasta salad. All yummy!

Stopped by The Kitchen for breakfast during vacation in Hot Springs. What a cute little restaurant, great speedy service, amazing food, great portions and fantastic staff! We will be back even if we simply drive down for the day from Rapid City! - I would add photos of the food, but it wad gone too quickly!
Jami M — Google review
We stopped for a late lunch. I had the meatloaf sandwich, it was delicious. The portion was huge. My husband had the chicken sandwich, amazing. The service was great. Prompt and friendly. The chocolate chip cookies are to die for. We went back the next day and they were out, the owner offered to make us some on the spot. Ordered 6 and shared with our grandkids. Highly recommend. The staff and owner obviously care about your experience at their restaurant. We will go here every trip to the Black Hills.
Jane B — Google review
Cute little restaurant. Food was good except for their homemade chips that were under seasoned and not our favorite. This was probably our cheapest sit down meal we had on our vacation. You could tell our waiter was new- it took forever for our food to come out and it was because she forgot to put it in! We appreciated her honesty nonetheless.
Winnie B — Google review
Great place for a great sandwich and more. High quality. Chicken salad sandwich is awesome and you have to try the onion rings. They make a fantastic Arnold Palmer as well. They are dog friendly especially if your pup is quiet and doesn’t make a fuss. Their discretion of course. Would stop there again!

Whiskey River is a delightful restaurant and bar that effortlessly combines comfort with sophistication, making it an ideal spot for unwinding after exploring the stunning Black Hills. With its inviting ambiance, this venue offers a fantastic selection of delicious food and drinks, including standout items like their homemade mango margarita and custom dietary options. The staff is not only friendly but also knowledgeable, ensuring every visit feels special.
Had a great experience here. The vibe is modern and historical/rustic with a focus on quality and attention to detail. The bar seating was comfortable and had leather arm rests. The leather bound bar and drink menus were also an indicator of the attention to the details of next level quality The food was amazing, generous, and the service was what you'd want for a classy and bespoke establishment. The menu has something for everyone. The bathrooms were clean and furnished with 3 star hotel decor and wasn't an afterthought in design and hygiene. The bar menu and selection of liquors and craft cocktails 🍸 are of a higher selectivity and quality than your probably used too. The desert - tuxedo chocolate cake -we had was also high quality and very delicious. Would definitely eat here again.
David K — Google review
My bruschetta was amazing. My friend's chicken sandwich wasn't edible. The Parmesan fries were delicious. We arrived when there were very people and lots of staff. The staff awful. It took an hour to get a food menu. The bartenders are not happy if you sit at the bar and order food. I asked 3 workers for a food menu and all they wanted to do was sell more alcohol. I had high hopes and won't be back. When you pay over $50/person, decent service and kindness should come with it.

two of us were taken here for our birthday lunch by a friend that loves the food. greetings with a warm smile from the staff, sat at a table facing the waterfall that made the experience even more. the food came promptly with nice plating, now ready to dig in, one small disappointment I love golden fries very less salt, the waiter was able to redo for me,thanks... the other folks with me enjoyed there meal. I have plans for dinner some time in the near future.

We loved this place so much we had to stop twice!! Has a great vibe and the menu is varied enough there is something for everyone. This is elevated bar & griil to gastropub! 30 beers on tap and I stopped counting. The cocktails are devine, and Rachael mixes a mean Black Walnut Old Fashioned...and she pulled double duty as waitstaff as well one night!! Service is A1 and the food scrumptious. Wish we weren't just passing thru.
Jeff M — Google review
No pictures of our food because it was phenomenal and gone before I could think twice! The drinks were a whiskey sour (made to perfection) and the red head (delicious). The cook asked if I had a gluten allergy because I asked for no croutons on my salad of the gods; most people don’t catch that (or care). Wish we lived closer, we’d eat at this establishment frequently. However, we will make it a point to visit each year as part of our Sturgis trip!
Stacy S — Google review
We have been camping for days and decided to do laundry and go out to dinner tonight. We saw the menu online and decided to give it a try. Small but clean and well decorated with nice furnishings. Great menu, great food, and great service. Highly recommend!
Kate S — Google review
Nice place to grab some awesome food and delightful drinks. We were hesitant to try because we didn't bring any "fancy" clothes on vacation with us. Thankfully, No "fancy" clothes required - just FYI. Food was fantastic! Beef Tips are where it's at!!! Then an espresso martini and beignets to finish♥️

Two Cows Creamery and Bistro is a charming family-owned eatery situated on the main street of Hot Springs. This unique establishment offers a delectable array of homemade ice cream, freshly baked treats, and comforting dishes. Visitors can indulge in flavorful grilled cheese, hearty burgers, and bottomless fries while enjoying the soulful flavors crafted by the dedicated chef. The bistro's location along the river adds to its appeal as a perfect stop for lunch before exploring the nearby hot springs.
Upon a recent visit to Wind Cave Nat’l Park and in search of a hearty meal we stumbled upon this gem on one of the quietest downtown streets in America. Burgers are delicious and the wait time was minimal. There’s plenty of seating outside and inside. They even have glass bottled soda! Why I think that’s neat I’ll never know. Solo travelers, family travelers, or couples must visit this spot for lunch or dinner and if nothing else stop in for ice cream to go and watch the sunset from out front.

We went here multiple times during our stay in Hot Springs. Their bison burger is to die for. It’s so good. Everything here is made from scratch and they say they even prioritize healthy eating. The bison meat comes from local farmers. We got ice cream too and we really liked it. We got the mint ice cream, maple pecan, and white chocolate raspberry. They are all very good and have better ingredients than most places. The milk comes from local farmers too. Highly recommend this place!
Ian H — Google review
Everything here is farm to table. This may make it sound expensive, but the prices are more than reasonable. The burger was rich and juicy, full of flavor. I added some caramelized onions, jalapeños, and pickles and it was the best burger I've had at a restaurant in years. The fries were crispy and they give you as many as you like. The wife enjoyed her grilled cheese with parmesian fries. Friendly staff and ice cream that looks amazing. Glad we stopped here.

What a gem. We came for the Mammoth Site and needed lunch. It was such a great choice. Farm to table food. We had the bison burgers and fries and my husband had the Elvis milk shake and I had the buttered popcorn ice cream. So good. The wait was worth it.
Amy H — Google review
Loved this place. The prices are a bit high but that is to be expected. The ice cream was really yummy, and it seemed extra creamy. The burgers and chili are also really good. I think a bowl of chili is one of the best things you can get. It’s absolutely delicious and the bowl is much bigger than expected. Service wasn’t the best though.

Stopped at this local ice cream shop for dessert on our travels from Oregon. We are so happy to have found this local hot spot. It was hopping with people. Treats were delicious and we had to get a sticker and t-shirt to commemorate. Rose was especially friendly and helpful. I wasn’t brave enough to try the jalepeno cilantro ice cream, maybe next time! If only I lived closer, I would totally apply for a side hustle! 😊 The help wanted sign is Epic!

Wandering Bison Coffee is a charming coffee shop with a delightful aroma of freshly brewed coffee and delicious food. The friendly staff, though limited, work hard to provide a positive experience. The menu offers excellent paninis, toasties, and mouthwatering desserts like the orange cheesecake. Visitors also praise the gluten-free peanut butter cookie and the huge cinnamon rolls. The bison chili is highly recommended for lunch, along with flavorful wraps and sandwiches.
The catchy named helped us choose over the other options in town. The cool name fits with the excellent service and coffee. I don't normally get cold coffee but the barista recommended a special berry cold foam. I was hesitant, but glad I took her advice, it was very good, each so kept getting better. Gotta to my hat to the barista for the suggestion and for her friendliness. That covers did and service, next is atmosphere. I love seeing different seating options and the Wandering Buffalo offers several options including booths, tables, bar, and outdoor making it better than most, including the very welcoming comfy seats to sit and chat with friends. If I lived in the area I would likely be a regular. Thanks for treating us as locals even if we're 1500 miles from home.

Had the Bison Chili with the jalapeño biscuit and Iced Tea. The buscuit was very good, not too try, and broke apart well without a lot of crumbs. I enjoyed the chili, I though it had a more mild flavor, and was not really spicy, but it was well rounded and balanced.

LOVED this place. I got a Hay Ride Latte from their fall menu and it was not too sweet which was great. I hate drinking a coffee and it tastes like straight syrup. And whoever made that breakfast burrito put their BACK into it. Great job to all the staff😜

We stopped while on our bike. Great drip coffee. No bitterness at all. Tried the breakfast burrito with sausage. It was huge and split it with my husband. It was perfect.
Kristina B — Google review
Nothing to look at from outside and fairly Spartan inside - but more than adequate and spacious. My English Breakfast tea was excellent and in the USA that is a rare accolade. Luke warm gnats pee is the norm almost everywhere. However I had to ask for milk as there was none out or served with the tea. But milk was promptly supplied from the fridge with good humour so mustn’t grumble. Perhaps most Americans drink their tea black. The coffee was good and so was the menu. The slightly stale cup cake was uninspiring but not unpleasant. I don’t expect much of American cup cakes so I was not disappointed. They are usually too sweet and artificial. Overall a pleasant stop and I would recommend to others.

Food is usually good, except this time. I got Avocado Toast. Now I understand “air” getting to avocados and they’ll start to turn brown. So I went ahead and took the risk of taking a bite. Needless to say, the toast & side of Guacamole went straight into the trash, it was truly a waste of 8$. The avocado was more than just brown, it tasted as if it sat out for more than a day.

Perfect! Lots of stuff for the kiddos to do while you’re eating! Great atmosphere! Delicious menu! Kind staff! 10/10 recommend!
Sarah F — Google review
Spent 2 days in site at this location and ate here 2x for breakfast. Had both the caramel roll and cinnamon roll for breakfast and both were delicious, but if I had to choose between, the caramel edges out the cinnamon. Also had a avocado toast and a sausage quesadila that was more than enough for one person. Appreciated the chips that came with, but could have come with a larger salsa to handle the entree and chips. The next day had a burrito bowl that my GF enjoyed and also had a square croissant breakfast sausage sandwich that was delicious. Service was good and there is a 15% discount for hotel guests. The only cons were the facilities were a bit buggy and the windows were very smeared dirty.

Cinnamon roll - not good, mostly bread with just icing, no cinnamon Smoothie - more of a flavored slushy Burrito - good There were tons of flies everywhere, we tried to dine outside but it was unpleasant.

Stayed here on our road trip from SD back to CO with our toddler and black lab. It was the perfect spot for our family. Our toddler loved the outside toys. Very dog friendly too! We are going to make this summer trip a tradition every year and will definitely be staying here again.
