Granada

Granada is a Nicaraguan city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. It’s home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions. The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the colorful, neoclassical facade of the Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues.

The Chocolate Museum of Granada is a must-visit for chocolate lovers and families traveling with children. The museum offers interactive 'beans to bar' workshops where participants can learn the process of roasting and grinding cocoa beans to create their own Nicaraguan chocolate bar. Additionally, visitors can enjoy cigar-making workshops and explore the thriving chocolate industry in Nicaragua. The museum also features a variety of chocolate-based products available for purchase, from alcohol to soap.
Antonio was an awesome guy and explained everything well in english! We had a bunch of free chocolate and tasting experience and we left a tip after because it was super worth taking the time. After we ordered the fondue which was delicious!

A wonderful, very informative museum tour! Our guide, Sylvia, clearly explained the whole process from farm to final product. The tasting session (including different cacaos and liquor) was a great experience. The visuals were excellent for understanding the journey. We loved it and bought some dark chocolate and a brownie on the way out!
Edward L — Google review
The place is eclectic, offers variety of services. For me it's a spot for hot chocolate, especially cup of a 'Ceremonial hot chocolate'. A bit overpriced, but price includes unique atmosphere. Don't forget to wander around this beautiful house, appreciate the three courtyards (!) and picturesque corridors.

I went there and I got a 60-minute massage for $30 usd. It was one of the best massages I've ever had. The staff are friendly, and the chocolate iced tea was unique and tasty!
Christian H — Google review
Sylvia did the tour for us. We asked her to do it Spanish but slowly. She said ok. 2 mins after she was faster than formula 1. But whatever. It was very interesting. Sylvia seemed so tired and felt like she was about almost going to fall asleep in the middle of her speech but she was relatively friendly. It lasted About 30 minutes. We got to try various products. Cool location. Nice experience

Great experience at the Chocolate Museum of Granada, Antonio gave us a tour and we learned a lot about cacao history and how it's made. The cacao tree inside the museum is cool, we could taste every drinks they make there and the boutique offers great products (we bought brownies, cacao rum, moisturising cream, caramelized cacao and so many chocolate bars!). We will come back for sure next time we stay in Granada !

My 3 children and I had a great time at Choco Museo today in Granada! Their free tour is very informative, interactive and lots of fun. Their chocolate is also delicious. Highly recommend!
Jocelyn D — Google review
This place is amazing. I came here twice. Once I had the ceremonial drink and chocolate and it was delicious, everyone must try it. 2nd time I came for a facial and it was so good, i got a massage as well. The therapist named Katrina is just amazing, I would highly recommend her to everyone. And the prices for spa services is so much better than some other places i tried. At Socialtel reflexology was twice as much and it was terrible. Gonna write a separate review on that. Also tried Chocolate martini and just delicious.

Favilli Mansion Lounge, formerly known as Mombacho, is a colonial mansion in Granada that serves as the headquarters of Favilli Cigars. Visitors can witness the entire process of cigar making, from filling to binding to rolling, all done by hand. The tour provides insight into the production and process of creating quality cigars. Guests can enjoy a panoramic view from the rooftop and even roll their own cigar during the visit.
Amazing cigar tour. Great experience and must see while in Granada. Beautiful preserved colonial style building with a lovely layout. Staff were great. Get to roll your own cigar. They have a great selection of top quality cigars.
Alex E — Google review
Fantastic cigar factory in Granada, highly recommend going and rolling your own cigar! We went to both cigar factories Dona Elba and Mombacho and while Dona Elba is a traditional family business you can see that Mombacho has specialized in high end cigars and this also includes their tour. The guide Brian did a wonderful job explaining in great English the past of the business and the way tobacco is grown and used for cigars and how you can tell differences. He took us through the wonderful mansion where the factory is located and my boyfriend and I also rolled our own cigar with the help of the local staff who were super helpful! Every detail in their production process is ensuring everything is perfect which is great to witness. I highly recommend going!! A tour incl your own cigar is 10$ (Dona Elba is 8$) and takes about 1.5h
Julia K — Google review
This is a great little cigar factory in a good location. They offer basic tours and learn to roll your own tours. They have a nice selection of sticks for sale. Its also a plus that they speak english because my spanish is basic and limited. I look forward to enjoying the sticks later :)
Mike M — Google review
Claudio is truly a master, with the mind and spirit of an atelier. It was a gift to experience his passion and joy of cigar making and smoking. With him, Mombacho has a very bright future. The property is beautiful and the cigars were fantastic. Just like their sign says, a "best kept secret."
AABest — Google review
$10 per person for a tour of the entire cigar rolling process, the experience of rolling your own cigar and taking the cigar home as a souvenir! You can’t beat that! The Mombacho Cigar organization has worked extremely hard for their good name and certification and it shows. They truly care about the customer and making the perfect cigar. Their attention to detail, and their customer service is unmatched! Our tour guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the organization. We truly enjoyed his company, and his insight during our experience at Mombacho! There wasn’t a question that we asked that he couldn’t answer! Walking around Granada we saw many organizations that would allow you to roll your own cigar, but they do not offer a tour, OR have one of the highest cigar rankings in Nicaragua! If you are in the Masaya / Granada area, and even if you’re not a smoker (like myself), we HIGHLY recommend this tour!
Karson W — Google review
My wife and I did the tour here, and I also rolled a cigar. I smoke the occasional cigar, and my wife doesn't, but we both found it so interesting. The mansion is also beautiful, and you get to see a great view of the city from the rooftop. Our guide was wonderful!
D W — Google review
Great place to learn first steps about how to make cigars while also preparing your first own cigar. Bryan the tour guide was super nice! His english is really good. He explained everything about Mombacho cigars, the building and factory process. It takes some time if you want to roll your own cigar but it’s well integrated in the tour. E.g. while the cigars need to be pressed for 20min you continue the tour. The entire tour takes about 90min.
Tobias M — Google review
A nice place for a cigar tour if you don't want to venture out to Estelí. I did the $10 tour + $10 roll your own cigar option.

Mi Museo is housed in a charming colonial building from the mid-19th century and boasts an impressive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics, considered one of the most beautiful in the country. The museum offers a well-organized display of over a hundred intact ceramic pieces dating back to 2000 BCE, providing visitors with a glimpse into Granada's archaeological heritage. Additionally, educational activities are available for local schools, and visitors can explore the small souvenir shop offering books and other mementos.
A great place to know about Granada its history and customs

The cafe in this museum is very charming and relaxing. The garden is pretty nice too. However they only serve one type of coffee- Cafe Americano. I ordered it. Few minutes later the waiter brought me instant coffee. I told him it's not organic coffee and he insisted it was. Then I asked him to bring me the bag from where this coffee was made. He brought a real coffee. I asked him to smell and see if my coffee seems different from the one he brought. Finally he agreed to make me a new coffee. It was a real deal. Heads up as you may be tricked too.

What might have been an institution worthy of one's support is yet another awful example of an organization which has embraced discrimination in all its ugly forms by charging those of foreign origin unconscionably high entry fees. Even students are not spared the despicable treatment; I went with some fellow student colleagues and they wouldn't dare treat us equally and fairly. I and a friend with "whiter" skin were subjected to outrageous questioning regarding our national origin and sought to be slapped with entrance fees over 1,500% higher than those of our colleagues. Such outrageousness cannot be condoned.

They offer educational activities to schools in the area. The staff who run the place are qualified. It has a small souvenir shop where you can purchase books with research publications that have been made by the museum as well as other small souvenirs. They now offer a cafeteria service where you can enjoy good coffee and other groceries. The San Francisco Convent Museum in Granada, Nicaragua is a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts. Established in 1529, it is the oldest church in Central America and boasts a rich collection of archaeological treasures from Zapatera Island, primitive art exhibits, and historical displays. While exploring the museum, visitors can also enjoy a stroll by Lake Nicaragua to take in the refreshing breeze and stunning views.
We found this place well worth a visit. The building is beautiful with many rooms, courtyards and a large garden with plenty of seats to relax. The exhibits cover from pre history to present day and there are many boards in english. Also some wonderful art work. Well worth the entry fee and recommended to visit.

There are some nice things here, especially for first time visitors to the region, but nothing out of this world. At very slow pace maybe 1 hour, but could be done much faster. Not having change, even 20 cordobas while charhing 5 dollars - well now, clearly they could not be bothered.

Beautifully located museum, with interesting and well-presented exhibitions, information in Spanish & English. Cost $5 USD per person. One of those places in Granada to escape noise and hubbub of daily life. The current exhibition of 'Granada's doors and gates' is very picturesque.

Far exceeded expectations. This is 5 museums in 1, with a guided tour provided. The museums detail much about local religious customs in Granda but it also houses an extensive collection of religious art and nonreligious art & paintings from throughout Nicaragua. I was blown away, this is a must see for all tourists to Granada!

Beautiful building and interesting expositions, I was here a few years back and I had the impression there were more pieces but still has that colonial vibes.

Interesting museum with an eclectic number of exhibitions. The grounds were especially nice and well kept. The only downside for me was the lack of information in English.
Anton M — Google review
Pigeon poo all over walls, half exibits are missing, no toilet paper or soap for my sick girlfriend when we asked the staff just shrugged, half the museum is weird mannequins from 10 years ago and the other is pre Colombian replicas. The stuff we did want to actually look at didn’t have any English signs. Why are we paying 5x the amount when they don’t even have English signs? Overall worst museum I’ve been to

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Immaculate Conception of Mary Cathedral Church, located in Granada, Nicaragua, is a stunning Catholic cathedral known for its colorful interior and picturesque views from the bell tower. The church's vibrant orange, white, and yellow colors make it a standout landmark in the city. Climbing to the top of the cathedral offers a unique vantage point to appreciate Granada's urban layout and Spanish colonial grid plan.
Located in the heart of Granada, Granada's beautiful cathedral stands splendid against the beautiful central park, where Granadans gather to chat or shop.
Mike M — Google review
Given it had been destroyed number of times, the Cathedral is a true gem in the colonial architecture of Granada. Not as monumental and smaller than the Leon's Cathedral, it's still impressing. At the time of our visit the Cathedral's ceiling is being painting, which should add some artistry to the place.
M D — Google review
5/22/25 Stunning art and architecture. The most beautiful paintings on the ceilings! Haven’t seen anything else like it in Central America. Didn’t take my phone so no pictures. Go see for yourself:)
Katherine G — Google review
What a beautiful church. I love the architecture and the colors! It was a place of peace, and wasn't crowded.
Christian H — Google review
Too be honest we didn’t enter to the inside of the church. But for outside it a certainly beautiful, being able to apprentice the Colonia architecture with such a magnificent church ⛪️. I would definitely recommend to at least take a look at it form the outside if you are in Granada. 👍🏼👍🏼
Laj R — Google review
Beautiful colonial cathedral with plenty of bright Spanish colors and Spanish tiles. There is an option to go to the top which we definitely recommend. You are able to see the whole plaza from a birds eye view.
Jose C — Google review
You can’t miss this Cathedral in Granada. Considering that most of the city is flat, this building stands out easily amongst the other structures. Towering far above all of it, visible from kilometres around, are the distinctive yellow and white bell towers and dome of the Catedral de Granada. There’s been a church here since the late 16th century, but, along with other key sites in the city, it suffered at the hands of raiders in the centuries since. In 1856, the church was destroyed at the behest of William Walker}. Later in the century, rebuilding began but continued only fitfully due to lack of funding. The current version that you see now as largely complete by about 1915. The inside is not the most ornate of the old city’s Catholic cathedrals. In fact, it’s relatively sparsely decorated. But what it lacks in crammed-to-the-rafters lavishness it makes up for in scale and a sense of space and calm. The nave is expansive and spacious. The main altar piece is a strikingly beautiful arrangement of a statue of Mary surrounded by silver and backed by bright blue mosaic tiles. Spaced around the interior are a number of statues depicting religious figures and other religious artwork. And off to one side is a small but pretty little white chapel. Well worth visiting and allow at least 30 minutes to explore the inside and outside.

The Garden Cafe, located in Granada, Nicaragua, is a popular spot offering a variety of food options such as fresh salads, fish tacos, pesto sandwiches, hummus plates, avocado dishes, and more. It's known for its delicious coffee and pastries as well. The cafe is nestled in a lush garden setting providing a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
My favorite spot for food! We came here for lunch and a separate time just for dessert. The passionate fruit cheesecake was amazing. I had the fish tacos. And the smoothie with tahini, banana, dates and espresso was EXCELLENT!! The service is great and love the atmosphere, especially sitting outside with the lush green/garden around.

We really enjoyed our lunch at The Garden Café in Granada. The food was delicious, I had the steak sandwich, which came with plenty of meat and was full of flavor. The little garden is a lovely spot to sit and relax, a peaceful escape right in the city. The only downside was that our waitress didn’t seem very friendly, which took away a bit from the experience. Still, the food and setting make this a place worth visiting.

THE BEST CAFE IN GRANADA! I cannot express how much I love this place. I visit multiple times throughout the week they are amazing. Their food is amazing! I would say a decently wide variety of options out there! I personally love their hamburger, the pickle sauce that comes with it is DELICIOUS! Their deserts are perfection! They have a cutest cafe in there with a display of some pastry options. They also have a cute little shop to shop around in with SO MANY GOOD FINDS! Another favorite is they have books you can borrow or exchange! I think that is such a fun little addition! But the best is their employees! Going to other cafes or restaurants in Granada I can easily say this place has the best employees. They are so attentive to every need/ want! They are so understanding especially towards language barriers! Almost all of their employees understand English very well, and a lot can speak it. I know for me and some of my friends who have come Byron has been our favorite! He serves us almost every time and has been nothing short of perfection! Erick, Alex, and Jose always greet us with a friendly face! EASILY best place!

If I could, I would give Garden Cafe 11 out of 10 stars. The design of the space is flawless. Simple with lots of lush landscaping and cool tile throughout. The food is incredible. So fresh and a great variety of flavors and options. Everyone who works here is very friendly and helpful. Amazing and will be back soon!!!

The place has a cool Euro vibe to it which means it’s also more expensive. It has a serene garden setting and a separate room with AC if you’ve caught the sun and need respite. The salads are absolutely yum and the service smiley and friendly. I noticed some local “influencers” coming here for photo shoots.

Restaurante El Zaguán is a popular Nicaraguan steakhouse located near the Catedral. It's known for its delicious menu highlights such as bacon-wrapped filet mignon, pepper steak, and steak and lobster combo. The restaurant also offers excellent chicken and seafood dishes, but the caramelized maduros (sweet plantains) are a must-try side dish.
We came here to treat ourselves on our honeymoon and we were not disappointed! The staff are super friendly and professional making a great wine recommendation. The food was delicious, my husband and I both ordered a steak and they were cooked perfectly! Would highly recommend

We had an amazing first meal in Granada at El Zaguan. We were greeted as we walked in and the whole staff was very accommodating. Ricardo was our server and he was so friendly and spoke slow as he knew we were practicing our Spanish- which we appreciate so much :) we ordered the vigaron (a local dish) which was incredible and flavorful. We had one of their filets as our main which was so juicy and tender. We travel all over the world and highly recommend El Zaguan for a taste of true Nicaraguan food and hospitality. Thank you Ricardo & the rest of El Zaguán! We hope to return one day.

Loved it so much we ate here two nights during a 4 night stay. Recommend reservations so you get a beautiful table by the garden. The food was delicious, staff was hospitable and the decor was breathtaking. Don’t pass up on the ceviche!
Kathryn H — Google review
There are mixed reviews for this steak house. It seems customers either love it or feel the service or prices are not on par with expectations. I had a very pleasant experience and felt the prices were more than reasonable for the quality of the food and service. I was hungry on a Tuesday evening, so I went all in on the 16 oz Fileta Don Bernardo for only $32! Two drinks, two meals with an appetizer including local tax, and 10% gratuity ran about $85. Pricey by local standards, maybe. However, this would have cost more than twice that amount stateside. The steak was an excellent quality cut of meat. My only complaint was that it was undercooked for my taste. I requested Medium, and it bordered on Medium Rare or Rare in some spots. The steak was very thick but soft and flavorful. It almost melted in your mouth. I'm guessing it isn't ordered often, and an inexperienced chef must have miscalculated cooking time. Even though it wasn't cooked to my liking, I went with it, and I still enjoyed the quality and flavor of the meat. It was truly excellent. So, all things considered, I believe El Zaguán is a must try dining experience for visitors, especially for those with large appetites!
James D — Google review
Mario was a fantastic server making sure we had everything we needed and making an effort to speak English with us. We order the chorizo to share which was so tasty served with bread. For mains we had the cowboy steak and orange chicken. Both were so tender and full of flavour. This is more expensive than most other places but the quality of food and service is worth it.
Amie L — Google review
Mixed feelings about this place and having read the positive reviews, we were probably expecting too much. The staff were super friendly - we were pretty much sat in front of the grill and it was quite cool watching the guys tending and cooking though I kind of wished we were sat in the main restaurant as there seemed to be more atmosphere. I opted for the Pork Ribs, these were OK and if anything, a little dry which given all the fat is something. My other half had the churrusco and again OK, everything seemed a little under seasoned. Saying that though, we had a nice evening then staff were super friendly and the beer very cold - I think we maybe needed to adjust our expectations?

The restaurant offers a choice of salad with their meals and is known for its fresh and perfectly executed dishes such as labneh, Greek salad, and extra pita. The interior has a quirky charm with hanging empty bottles, creating a unique atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a special tasting plate and kebabs for dinner at reasonable prices.
This place is amazing! We came twice in 3 days. Had the falafel plate, the cauliflower, and one of the salads. All of it was incredible. Lots of vegan options. Very nice staff and lovely garden setting.

Really nice ambience for dinner. I got the Shawarma plate and my friend got the falafel player along with some Tamarind drink. Everything tasted okay. The prices are little on the higher range for the food I think especially considering the meat from the shawarma didn't feel as if it was made in slow vertical roast and was a bit dry and chunky, as if made on a flat grill.
Kunal B — Google review
I stopped into Pita Pita for dinner after a long travel day, and was so glad I had pinned it to my Google map before arriving. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food was delicious! I had a watermelon juice, tzatziki/pita, and a Greek salad with chicken. The last time I had a salad like that was in Greece in 2011. Fresh vegetables, lightly dressed, with a crumble of feta on top. Perfection. My bill was $22, which I was happy to pay for a solid meal. I hope to go again before I leave. Edited to say: In the week that I’ve been in Granada, I’ve eaten here FOUR times. Messiel was the sweetest server and Spanish teacher. I’m telling everyone I know to come here!!

We've made this a regular spot! The service and food are always fantastic. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. The portions are a good size, fresh, flavorful and well prepared. We have enjoyed pizzas, lasagna and Mediterranean plates. I also love their Turkish coffee. Honestly, I doubt you can go wrong with any selection.

What a great meal! For starters, the service is great. Made to feel welcome as soon as I walked in. I had the shawarma chicken. It came with pita and various salads as well as hummus. It was delicious. I want to return to try their pizza. Edit: I corrected the photo situation, these are from Pita Pita! I also did go back for some pizza... it was really good!

Finding Middle Eastern cuisine in Nicaragua was quite a surprise. We chose to have an assortment of different disches: hummus, suvlaky, kebab and pizza. El Garaje is a nice little spot for lunch for those who enjoy savory sandwiches and lunch fare with deference to locally sourced and organic ingredients. The menu isn't huge or even extremely diverse, but the offerings they have are very well done and very tasty. I may have missed it when looking for my lunch spot that day, but El Garaje is CASH ONLY, credit cards not accepted. Fortunately, I had plenty of cash with me. A nice lunch for 2 with beverages, including local tax and gratuity, ran about $17 The food is a great value and worth the visit if you're in the area.

This is a cute restaurant inside a beautiful colonial building in the center area of town. They offer creative and delicious handcrafted sandwiches. I had the pulled pork sandwich and unsweetened ice tea. The generous helping of pork was lean and tender. The homemade BBQ sauce was divine as well as the homemade bun. The coleslaw was tangy, fresh and crunchy. 10 out of 10 service too. English spoken.

I’ve been coming here since 2012, with long stints of going multiple times a week. Delicious, clean, farm fresh food with staples and a weekly rotating menu. Vegan and vegetarian options available, but they cure their own meats so if you are a meat lover, this is your lunch place. It tends to fill up early in high season and can be difficult or impossible to get a table, but generally if you are there at 11:30 you won’t have a problem no matter the time of year. The menu is in English fyi.

The best sandwich since many years ago! If it wasn't the best one ever 🤔🥰 Lime-Ginger Chicken with Pineapple mango salsa is the perfect combination! And worth to try

Kathy's Waffle House is a beloved breakfast destination in Granada, often hailed as the ultimate spot for waffles and pancakes. With an extensive menu that includes everything from classic eggs with rice and beans to delightful bagels with cream cheese, there's something for everyone. Guests rave about their generous portions, like the hearty gallo pinto served alongside perfectly poached eggs. The café also boasts a charming terrace where you can enjoy your meal while soaking in views of the vibrant streets nearby.
Delicious food and incredible location. Huge variety for all tastes and good combination of both Nic and American breakfasts. We went twice for breakfast and weren't disappointed!!

TOURIST PRICES. The omelette was bad. They used the american cheese that tastes like plastic and didnt cut the bacon they put in it. I found it inedible. The waffle was ok.

Known as the best waffle and pancake place in Granada, and possibly Nicaragua 🇳🇮 . This place is the middle of the city across from Plaza Convento. Tables are sticky and not the best view. But the seating is above the sidewalk, so people can’t bother you to sell you things, which is great. Coffee and smoothies were amazing! We had chocolate waffles and pancakes with bacon and eggs! Everything was cooked perfectly and was very yummy. This is rare in Nicaragua as most is don’t have the right ingredients and are usually cold. But everything was hot and tasty. I would highly suggest this as the go to place for breakfast. I will come back and update this review when I come here for lunch.

One of the best breakfast places in Granada, the portions are big and the flavour is great. Coffee is fine, and you can ask for a refill. Pancakes are big and delicious, with the right amount of butter and syrup. I usually order with eggs and that makes a big breakfast. The location, just in front of San Francisco church, with a calm street and the fresh air you will enjoy the ambience. There is usually space to park on the street. The staff is kind and kitchen is fast. The bathroom for men is small but clean. This is one of the many great places for a breakfast in Granada.

Food is well prepared and very tasty. The portions are more than generous. Has a great covered patio with plants for dining that is raised above the street. Service with profesional, courteous, and timely.

Fantastic service. Clean premises. Convenient location. Delicious food. What is there not to like about this establishment?

The service is great but to be honest it felt quite expensive for what is essentially a greasy fry up. I paid USD13 for a smoothie and 2 eggs / bacon / potato’s / one slice of bread
