Restaurant
We stopped at a recommended restaurant called Mr. Maxie's for a late lunch. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the view of the ocean from the second-story location. They serve Caribbean-inspired dishes, such as chicken with coconut milk-infused rice and beans. The restaurant accepts all major credit cards except for American Express, which is worth noting since it differs from other Costa Rican businesses. Mr.
I visited this restaurant today the first time. Very delicious food with an awesome view. I had rice and beans with red snapper/ caribbean style and it was amazing! portion was huge. A must when you are in Manzanillo 🩶

Maxi's has been renovated and is under new management. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is even better. Prices are reasonable for oceanfront dining. The food was good, however I ordered the ribs. There was not a lot of meat and I was only given a butter knife. This made it challenging to get the meat off the bone. They were way overstaffed when we were there. 9 servers for 5 customers. But it's good to see they are prepared for large crowds. Since it has only been open for a few days under the new management I'm sure it will be 5 stars soon. Overall I recommend it. 🍻

We ate here while traveling through this part of the country. Our server, Jeremy, was amazing. The food was outstanding and the view cannot be beat! We enjoyed it so much we went back before we left the area. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Poor service, will ask you to pay after you used the bathroom. Hold your pee in and don’t eat there. They won’t serve you unless it’s to scam you.

We didn’t stay at hotel just stopped in for food. Service was wonderful. We had the garlic shrimp, with white rice, rice and beans, and fries! The garlic the shrimp was in so good, my husband and I dumped it into our rice. I had a strawberry mojito, delish!

Excellent remodel, very pretty and new. Excellent location. Food was very good. Sauces are excellent and seafood and bistec nicely cooked. Cocktails were very good. Cons: Very overpriced!!! The rice, on each plate, was just ok. 5:00 on a sunday, it was empty and wait staff just waiting around, strange.

Maxi's has recently been renovated in Manzanillo bringing a lovely open-air Caribbean beach vibe dining experience. Great place to grab a batido, coffee, or breakfast in the morning before or after your hike in the National Park. Enjoy a sunset dinner in the evening. The staff was very friendly and accomodating.

Hot Rocks is a popular nightlife spot in Puerto Viejo, known for its lively atmosphere and entertainment options. Located at the center of town where the main road meets the harbor, it features a big stage for live music and karaoke, a packed bar, as well as pool and foosball tables. The venue also offers an open restaurant setting with swinging chairs and hosts various themed nights including karaoke, salsa, and Ladies Night.
Whats not to like about hot rocks? Happy hour, good bar food, live music, open mic nights, salsa dancing, good people, great bartenders, and its pretty much hoping on the weekends with a mix of locals, tourists, and expats. It's in the center of Puerto Viejo and a well known hot spot. They have cheap drinks as well. I'm personally obsessed with the chicken fingers and fried plantains or french fries with some ranch.

Cool Caribbean style place, easy food for kids. Local Costa Rica food available, spanish finger food too. The fajitas were delicious

Hot Rocks was a cool stop on our trip through Puerto Viejo. They usually have live music or karaoke and they welcome people on stage to dance. The setup inside is difficult to navigate though- the long tables make it difficult to walk through and it can get super packed on event nights. I recommend ordering at the bar if you can- unfortunately they were pretty short staffed when we visited and it took about a half hour for us to get our drinks. When all is said and done though we still had a great time and I loved the atmosphere.

Had lunch here. Drinks were awesome. Food was plentiful. Good quality food. Service was quick. Be sure to stop here!

Went on a Saturday with my cousins. Got a table near the pool tables. Service was random and kind of slow. Food was fine, the menu is pretty extensive. My cousin LOVED the chicken fajitas, and couldn't stop raving about them. The atmosphere is the real draw. The entertainment was amazing! Super fun place, very local, highly recommended.

Best place in Puerto Viejo for live music. They get great bands
Matz S — Google review
This was a great place to stop for live music I liked the band, but the service absolutely ruined our experience. I took two sips of my drink and wanted to spit it out. I asked my waiter if we could exchange it but the waiter never brought the new drink. When he finally came back with the bill he double charged our drinks. When we brought it up, he said he drank the drinks and didn’t see a problem with it. I was stunned by the comment and lack of service
Threy S — Google review
Terrible food and service. We had the worst drinks I’ve ever tasted. Tasted like sour, cheap trash in your mouth. The live music is nice but please don’t eat or drink here. Spent $56 for 3 drinks.

The Cool and Calm Cafe in Manzanillo, Costa Rica is receiving high praise for its exceptional quality. Unlike many disappointments among the numerous restaurants in the area, this establishment truly lives up to its reputation. One standout dish is their grilled red snapper, which is cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Additionally, their ribs are juicy and accompanied by an exquisite basting sauce that takes it to another level.
Out off all food experiences in Costa Rica this was a clear number 1. Absolute must if you are around - strong recommendation. Atmosphere and Service also great!! We had the lobster, red snapper from the grill and the mixed seafood platter from the kitchen

Loved this place! We visited twice, the second time on a Sunday when it was hard to find an open restaurant in this area. Good food at reasonable prices. Mojitos were $7, Coco loco served in a coconut $4. Good ceviche at $6. Fish & chips $14. Grilled Marlin $18. Great vibe, and not crowded.

We absolutely love Cool and Calm Reggae Bar & Grill! My husband and I have eaten here three times over the past couple of years, and every visit has been unforgettable. Hands down the best seafood we’ve ever had – fresh lobster, jumbo shrimp, red snapper, and the most flavorful jerk chicken, all cooked to perfection over an open wood fire grill. Chef Andy is amazing – his passion and skill shine through in every dish. Jeffrey, our server, was welcoming and attentive, the delicious fresh fruit cocktails are the perfect complement to the meal, and the laid-back reggae vibe makes the whole experience even more special. Absolutely amazing every time – we cannot say enough good things about this place!

One of our favorite spots around! Everything we’ve tried has been fresh, flavorful, and delicious! The seafood and coco locos are perfection. And the owner Chris is awesome! This place is a must try in Manzanillo.

A must visit! Best civiche and pina colada i have ever had! Everything was fresh and amazing. The service was welcoming and fun and the vibe was so unique with a jamacain influence. We traveled down the caribbean coast and this was our favorite soda.
Brianne G — Google review
Succulent bbq to write home about on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. Chef Andy is the master of this roadside grill that lures you in with the smoky aroma of the freshest seafood, veggies, and ribs. Did I mention the grilled pineapple dripping with smoky sweetness. The place is brightly colored in red, yellow and green with pumping Soca and Reggae music. A really chilled place for ice-cold beers and finger-licking food!

This is a must try if you are visting the Carribean side of Costa Rica. I had the grilled Red Snapper, it was grilled and seasoned to perfection as well as the fresh vegetables and pineapple. It's the best food I have had so far.
Cynthia B — Google review
Amazing Caribbean food and delicious frozen drinks. Everything here is great and a huge portion! Fish tacos, ceviche and grilled pork are just a few of my favorites. 10/10 Chef Andy is the man 🤙 -also the bad reviews are ignorant Americans looking for Texas Roadhouse steaks in Costa Rica… good luck with that

We had a fantastic dinner at Colores restaurant and beach lounge. We ordered Surf 'n' Turf and Lobster along with some delicious side dishes like salad, hand cut fries, and yuca balls with Mozzarella. The main courses were all superb, prepared with fresh ingredients that added to the overall exquisite taste. Don't miss out on trying their Greek appetizers such as Tzatziki and pita bread. The staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, and engaged throughout our visit.
Very attentive service and a good selection of local craft beer. The location is beautiful, right under the palms on the beach. I ordered the dish of the day — calamari — and it was perfect: fresh and tender. Highly recommended!

A table by the ocean.... more than lovely. Service was delightful. the waitress was attentive and very informative. The food was decent. Had shrimp ceviche, was good, a little under flavored. We also ordered the Marlin Special. Was tasty but a bit overcooked. Plantains were delicioso, and beers were excellent.

Amazing food, wonderful staff, and a great view from the beach! The fish and shrimp ceviche tasted very fresh. The club sandwich also had nice ingredients and bread. You can sit on the beach among the trees to enjoy the view and the sound of the waves. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Only in Manzanillio for a few days, and I even returned for dinner which was also amazing!

You can’t ask for a more idyllic setting for a lunch. Table on the beach front under the shade of the palm trees 🌴. The whole Red Snapper meal was exceptional…. Probably the best fresh fish 🐟 meal we had in Costa Rica. Stop in if you’re in Manzanilla.

At first I didn’t want to go there. Costa Rica is already pricey and this place is charging even a tad more than all the other places. But: Go there! The food is really so much better! The service as well. And in the end we didn’t spend more than on any other night, although we had eaten so much better. The portions are generous. My starter (best ceviche ever and REALLY fresh - very different from many other places where you feel that the fish has been marinated far too long and everything is falling apart already) was basically a main course. When we ordered two club sandwiches for our two kids, they were fair enough to tell us right away that they‘re huge and one might be enough for the kids to share (I really appreciate this kind of thoughtfulness). Free water on the house and served neatly. The ambience is very nice as well. We‘ll definitely come back!

5☆ across the board! Excellent wait staff, friendly, attentive, and trained to a high level. Absolutely gorgeous surroundings, right on the beach, under trees with lights strung above. The food was delishous and expertly prepared. This is a "not to miss dinner experience"! They moved us effortlessly, "inside" for dessert, when the rain stared.

We ate dinner at Colores twice during our short time in Manzanillo and really enjoyed our meal both times. Marcela, Nikolas and their staff are very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. This was our favourite restaurant during our entire two week trip in Costa Rica and we will definitely visit again if we are in the country in future. You absolutely must visit if you are in Manzanillo or Puerto Viejo. Thank you Colores!

Cocoloba Café-Restaurante is a quaint eatery located near the beach, boasting a diverse menu that caters to both adults and children. Their ricenbeans with spicy prawns are particularly noteworthy, showcasing flavors reminiscent of Costa Rica. In addition to beer, they offer a variety of refreshing fruit drinks at reasonable prices. It serves as an ideal escape from the bustling beach scene on weekends, providing a relaxing ambiance accompanied by pleasant tunes and captivating views of the surf.
this is the best food I’ve had in CR

Overpriced food and not very good, costumer service below average

Nice spot to grab a bite and relax away from the chaos that is the beach on the weekends. Chill while listening to some sweet tunes and watch the surf across the road. Fruit (mango & banana) pancakes and a coffee are a nice Sunday combo. Bus stop just across the road. Friendly dog. Good Wi-Fi.

I really really loved the food there. The woman is very nice. I ordered a fish with vegetables and plaintain, my husband ordered rice and beans with carribean chicken. Everything was delicious.

The food was good. Prices are good for the restaurant right by the sea. We had two meals, pancake, omelette with rice, we can recommend both.

I love Cocoloba for breakfast. They open at 7am the food is great, and the atmosphere is even better! The two women that own this place are very friendly and attentive. They play nice peaceful music while you gaze into the ocean and watch hummingbirds feeding on the plants out front. It doesn't get much better.
