Cahuita

Cahuita is a village on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, near the border with Panama. It's a gateway to Cahuita National Park, which has coral reefs and the white-sand beach of Playa Blanca. The park’s rainforest shelters toucans, monkeys and turtles. The black-sand beach of Playa Negra, known for its strong waves, is north of the village. Farther north, the Sloth Sanctuary cares for injured and orphaned sloths.

Pizza restaurant
Restaurante Pizzeria Cahuita is a fantastic dining spot located on Beach Road in Cahuita, Costa Rica. It offers a diverse menu featuring Caribbean and South American cuisine as well as Italian dishes prepared by Giuseppe and Eliza from Ravenna, Italy. The restaurant is known for its artistic touch in the kitchen and serves delicious bruschetta mixta among other delectable options.
Another restaurant that made us want to go back...three times. We had a variety of dishes including pizza, all were excellent. The last night we were there they seated us on the deck by the ocean. The other nights were rainy and windy and we were seated inside, which has very nice decor. If I had a single negative comment it would be about our servers not being quite as attentive as they could have been. This only happened on nights one and two. I had to go to the bar and ask them to take our drink order and then again to the bar to ask for our bill on nights one and two. The servers appeared to be having a very entertaining conversation at the bar. On night three we were well looked after especially considering the distance from the oceanside deck to the main restaurant. The pictures are from three visits. After receiving a response from the owner I am editing this review as I am always impressed by owners who respond to reviews. It shows they are engaged in their business and their customers.

Awesome place to eat with tables right on the water. The pizza was exceptional. Prices are a little steep but overall worth it. We had howler monkeys visit when we were eating.

Pizza is delicious. Unless you have a beast appetite, a pizza is good to share! House red wine was good as well. The view is beautiful. 👌🏻

Relaxing atmosphere with seats facing the ocean. A few vegan options (pasta and pizza). Good WiFi. Servers are nice. A bit on the pricy end among the options in town.

A taste of Italy in Cahuita. The pizzas are phenomenal. I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite wine on the menu (Valpolicella). The staff is friendly. We were able to dine on the deck right by the water. Highly recommend.

We have been here twice during our 4-day vacation in Cahuita. We had Pizza Rustica, Capriciosa, Trufa and Napoli plus some starters. To drink some Mojitos. Pizza and drinks were awesome! We were here during rain season, no reservation was needed.
Basti R — Google review
Servers were very gracious but they seemed understaffed & overwhelmed. We had pizzas, they were ok but not great. Watch out for the sand flies if you sit on the beach table, wear insect repellent! Rather expensive considering.

Amazing food with deep care for the dishes. Pizza was really good. I tried the fresh fish fillet in Livornese style, excellent. Too bad the weather was a bit gloomy, and the seaside terrace was not available …

Sobre las Olas is a renowned restaurant located in Cahuita, Costa Rica, offering a delightful dining experience. Situated on the Caribbean coast, it is celebrated for its delectable seafood dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced directly from the sea. The restaurant provides a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can savor authentic Caribbean cuisine while enjoying live music.
Very good food and a wonderful view. There is a Japanese twist to the cuisine which we personally liked. My husband ordered the sesame coated tuna steak (raw fish) and he loved it. The rest of us chose more local dishes and they were served fast and left us feeling full and satisfied.
Gabriela B — Google review
We loved our happy hour& dinner time here! Stunning Beachfront view — the perfect spot to unwind. The cocktails and food were both beautiful and delicious. Staff were super friendly and even showed us a sloth mom and baby in the tree above our table! Such a cool experience.

The location of Sobre las Olas is absolutely exceptional – right on the water, with a stunning view and a peaceful vibe. The food was both beautiful and delicious, and the piña colada honestly tasted like heaven. Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the rest of the experience. Maybe it was because it was a Monday or the low season, but with only four guests in the entire restaurant, the waiter still managed to mix up the bills between the only two tables. We didn’t even receive a check with the right items. It’s a place I’d recommend for the atmosphere and food alone, but I hope the service gets more attention.
Mylene B — Google review
Relaxed spot by the ocean that was recommended to us by our host. And wow this did not disappoint!! Great spot right by the water and absolutely amazing sushi! We ordered the spicy tuna roll, the ceviche roll, and the crunchy roll. All were great but our favorite was definitely the ceviche roll!! Would recommend and will be coming back whenever I’m back in Cahuita!
Annamarie D — Google review
Highly recommended restaurant YET highly disappointing. First cause for concern, utterly incoherent menu. "I'll have some edamame, greek salad, hummus and some carribbean style salmon please". Two menus were present, with different prices for same items, the only consistency was the inconsistency. Staff was nice, but slow and incompetent. Food was very overpriced, they try to be fancy with spiralled and unseasoned carrots, that supposedly improve the plating but do little more than pollute your plate. The main components of the dishes were subpar at best. Specifically the edemane were a joke, unsalted, microwaved and topped with stale gochugaru. The so called ceviche had the knife work blind amputee and the seasoning of somebody working in a chemical weapons department, acidic enough to kill a horse. The ceviche consisted of only fish and leche de tigre if anybody finds the missing sides a finders reward shall be issued. Some of the produce was fresh and tasty, clearly sourced locally, that is the only positive aspect I can see in this establishment, but considering price and portion size Id rather risk my life and go spear fishing in hurricane.
Mia R — Google review
I'm torn about this review because the menu offers a lot of amazing items, the view is spectacular, and the service was nice but not attentive. Twice, I had to walk inside to ask for things that should have been brought to the table or offered. The sushi was good. They really have a knack for tempura which is something many places here in Costa Rica get wrong. I had the 15 piece sushi combo. Delicious and enough to take home a few or dinner. My friend had the lomito with veggies and mashed potatoes. Meat was cooked well and she liked the veggies but said potatoes seemed like made from a box, which is unusual for the area. The place has great music, upscale decor, but then serves the meals with the cheapest silverware in the area. If there is one thing this place can do to raise the perception of the place is get decently weighted silverware. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it's really noticeable. Overall, I like the food and the view. I will return for another taste.

This is a beautiful spot to eat by the ocean in Playa Negra, Cahuita. It would be a nice date night spot. They have a world fusion menu with sushi, Korean flavors, Fresh fish, Steak, and some Middle Eastern delights. They also host live music sometimes. The staff is fabulous.
Jennifer A — Google review
A very unassuming and charming restaurant that doesn’t look like much from the roadside. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and spoke English very well. For an appetizer I had swordfish carpaccio which was delicious - I shared a small amount with a kitten that lived at the restaurant; we both enjoyed it. I had grilled sea bass with vegetables for my main and it was done to perfection. My wife had shrimps cooked in a spicy Mexican sauce. We were alone in the restaurant at 7:00pm and it was getting very full by 8:00pm.

Nestled in the vibrant town of Cahuita, Costa Rica, Soda Kawe is a delightful eatery that captures the essence of local cuisine. This charming spot offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for travelers seeking authentic flavors without breaking the bank. Known for its friendly service and delicious dishes, Soda Kawe serves as an ideal stop before or after exploring the nearby national park.
Nice authentic Soda downtown Cahuita. I had the fresh fruit plate, eggs with cheeses and fried bread, rice and beans, coffee, and juice. Breakfast was reasonably priced and was authentic cuisine. Good authentic Local cuisine.
Andrew R — Google review
We came to Soda Kawe two days running because it was so delicious. The fruit plates were fresh and Gallo Pinto options were a great taste of traditional Costa Rican fare. Get extra fried cakes because they are unreal.

Awesome food, for a great price! The casados con pollo was so great, and the chicken was so tender it was falling off the bone. The fish snapper was very well cooked, the fajitas de pollo and res, and patacones con frijoles were all so good! The juice was delicious as well — especially the blackberry and passionfruit. They have fans that help with the heat, and spacious bathrooms as well.
Maegan H — Google review
The only place open at 5:30 AM. It’s got great food true authentic Caribbean fair. It’s open air seating, but it’s cool with plenty of fans and a view. If you sit in the right spot of the national park and the Caribbean Sea, it’s along the main fair right outside the gates to the national park super convenient and I’ve tried two or three other places to eat and they’re good. None better than this that I tried. Interesting fact, when I tried the eggs with sausage, I was surprised to find that the sausage tasted almost exactly like American hotdog. Personally, I recommend the bacon. Not tourist over run. Locals come here too. It’s a peaceful and pleasant place for breakfast. Maybe my favorite breakfast spot ever.
Zach P — Google review
The chicken fell off the bone. The rice and beans had incredible flavor. The smoothies are so fresh and delicious. We are looking forward to coming back for breakfast.

This place is phenomenal, personally the best gallo pinto I've had. Great atmosphere, staff was friendly and even though the place was packed we received great service in a timely manner. Definitely suggest Soda Kawe as a first choice, and it's conveniently located right by entrance to the park, perfect place to eat before or after exploring Cahuita National Park. Again, great local spot, with great food, sitting area and service.

The cuisine at El Encanto Restaurante is outstanding, receiving high praise from customers. The chef's culinary skills are exceptional, earning a perfect score of 10. Dishes like the Corvina al Papillote and Black Rice with Jumbo Shrimp are spectacular and loved by patrons. The restaurant is highly recommended as the best place to eat in Cahuita. The food and service are incredible, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
We came here twice. Located in the Hotel Encanto, you walk through a jungly garden to get to the restaurant. Cocktails were perfect, the corvina en pappiote was excellent and the pizza was good. Very friendly and a comfortable atmosphere.

Nestled in the vibrant town of Cahuita, Costa Rica, Aroma, Coffee Bar & Breakfast is a delightful haven for coffee lovers and breakfast enthusiasts alike. This charming café offers a cozy atmosphere where you can savor expertly brewed coffee alongside a diverse menu featuring delicious breakfast options. Whether you're in the mood for classic dishes or something with a local twist, Aroma has something to satisfy every palate.
Delicious food and huge portions! Main dishes were super tasty, the staff also very nice. I didn't like the garlic bread - the buns should've been hot and crispy, unfortunately they weren't. Prices are fair.

A dedicated vegan menu page. Delicious food - we had veggie wraps and mango spring rolls (the sauce is heavenly) - feel so clean and nourished after dining there! Great atmosphere. Good WiFi. Reasonable price.
Yu-Shan C — Google review
Food was delicious and delivered quite quickly. Also very reasonably priced. I got the Hash Brown with Eggs and Bacon. Was a very good portion of food and the fruit that came with it was delicious and a good palate cleanser. My mom got one of the Avocado Toast and it was enormous! She said it was very good as well. The iced coffees we got had ice cubes made from coffee so they didn't water down the drink as they melted. Overall a fantastic experience!

Vanilla iced coffee was one of the best drinks we had here! I didn’t take a picture but the aroma sandwich was so GOOD! Definitely recommend!! We have hit every cafe possible and this one was so yummy !

Amazing food experience! Tastiest mango spring rolls and Aroma sandwich! Cappuccino was good. Location is very close to the bus station, so we went there before catching a bus. If it was not our last day in the area I would definitely come back to this place

The vegan menu is banging!!! So much choice! The coffee is also really good. The prices aren't too bad, the completo breakfast is really good value too as it's a decent portion and comes with an americano and juice. We have been twice in 3 days and will probably return again. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a tasty lunch in Cahuita.

Delicious breakfast and excellent coffee drinks! I really like that they have a variety of food options and even use coffee ice cubes. The service was wonderful too. I’ll definitely be returning!

Amazing café place with great coffee, our favorite so far in Costa Rica. The food was really good, simple but full of flavour! Very kind staff all smiles. The place was cosy and our daughter had so much fun she even lied on the ground wanting to nap there 😀 Recommend the gorilla smoothie and happy morning, avocado toast, granola and pancakes!

Loved this place, fabulously fresh and great quality food. Amazing Maitre d' as well, very entertaining and attentive! Would highly recommend finding this place at the end of the high street

Found the food here neatly served but not that mind blowing as the rating would suggest - bruschetta was nice, my main dish was supposed to have curry and coconut milk in it, I didn't find any of them present. The dish was in general not bad but boring. My brother ordered shrimps and got 4 (Four) piece of it - all for 11.500 colones :) That's 4 piece of shrimp for about 18 dollars. I wouldn't honestly recommend going here. Service was polite but the prices are way too high...

One of the best restaurants in Cahuita! Fresh food, nicely presented and high quality local ingredients. Recommended for seafood lovers too. The menu varies from veggie curry to meat to seafood. Loved the avocado salad and veggie curry (Ratatouille). Also, they serve the best breakfast in town. Not the cheapest restaurant but well worth the money. Very nice and friendly service/staff. We loved it and went there several times. Highly recommended!

Very nice place. Firstly the ambience is lovely, you can be on the main deck of the restaurant or under a nice gazebo. The menu is small compared to other places, which is a great indicator of quality control. I had the grilled red snapper and it was well grilled which gave it a lot of flavour. It came with fries which were seasones with parsley, and some nice vegetables. The waiter was really nice and welcoming. Gracias!

This is beautiful little corner spot with palm trees growing out of the sides and excellent mojitos. I wanted to try the whole-fried-fish while I was here and I was able to get it here. The fish was incredible, it's really amazing finding all the odd little tasty bits on a whole fish and I totally recommend the snapper here. It's a little boney though.

Absolutely incredible. We stayed in Cahuita and ate here a few times on the recommendation of our hotel owner. Food is great drinks are great, but most importantly the people are wonderful! If you are coming from the US the service is a bit slower than we are used to, but that is natural for the country as a whole, just a cultural difference. Make a reservation and know that everything is worth the wait and wonderful!!
Christina W — Google review
🤢AVOID AT ALL COST - FOOD POISONING ALERT‼️ This restaurant was recommended by La Shamana eco lodge mentioning that as a vegetarian herself we will find many options as one of us is vegan and that the food was good. They only offered, the bruschetta and the vegan ratatouille as a viable vegan option. We chose the seafood pasta, seafood soup and the vegan ratatouille which were quite expensive. The food was pretty greasy full of garlic and the ratatouille was just rice and vegetables cooked in garlic and oil it is not at all a ratatouille but more of a gigantic fried rice. The following day we all had food poisoning that lasted 24h, I will spare the details… The only positive side was the waiter who was very nice. I would suggest to not base yourself on the ratings but to read the other bad food poisoning reviews and save yourself from a horrible night! This place should be closed as having so many food poisoning reviews should be an eye opener to the owner who clearly does not care about food safety.

One of the best restaurants we’ve had in our trip in Costa Rica and we did the Pacific Coast and the Caribbean coast. The Red Snapper was perfectly snacked and the Ceviche was amazing. The Service was really good too. We came at the same time as a big group and the waiter came to take our orders so that we won’t have to wait. Come and enjoy a great meal in a cool and chill street of Cahuita.

Bar
Located on the beach of Playa Negra, Reggae Bar is a laid-back and energetic spot where you can enjoy live reggae music and dance along to the tunes. The bar offers great food and drinks, with options like watermelon smoothies and delicious Caribbean-style fish dishes. Despite occasional service issues, visitors appreciate the friendly staff and the opportunity to relax with a cold beer or glass of wine right by the beach.
Very nice food and drinks - bruschetta with tomatoes and the chicken sandwich are a must have. They also serve strong mohitos. Right by the beach so it's a good spot to grab a snack (or drink) afterwards.

No reggae the night we went but definitely it has a cool vibe, people were having a good time and it was also karaoke night, food was ok, nothing special, beer was cold and the people was warm and welcoming.

I visited this bar in Costa Rica because I was looking forward to the reggae vibe that everyone had raved about. Unfortunately, my expectations fell short as the music consisted mostly of touristy American songs. I was quite disappointed because I had hoped for a true reggae experience. However, I must say the staff was friendly and welcoming. I really wish they could bring back the authentic spirit of the bar from four years ago when I last visited

Talk about a chill atmosphere. This place has it all. Delicious food and great service with a beachside view of the Ocean. Get down on Friday night with live music or just relax under the umbrella with a cool beverage! You won't regret it!

There was promise of live music that didn't end up happening, a bit disappointed in that. Food took more than an hour to come out and thre is not drinkable tap water or hot sauce.. overall mediocre experience unfortunately.

We were there for lunch at about 1 pm. We waited over a n hour for the food (which was tasty). The servicd was good, but not overwhelming. The ambiente at the beach is very cozy.

Friendly staff and descent menu with good food. We also had the pasta bolognaise later and was ok as well.

Reggae Bar is directly across from the beach so you get to enjoy the sweet sound of roots reggae and the Caribbean sea. The food was delicious but did take some time to prepare so plan on waiting for a bit. I rather my food fresh so it wasn't a problem for me. The staff were friendly and did a wonderful job of catering to my family and I. For those it matters, it's Black owned and you're support a local.
