Nestled at the picturesque Caudan Waterfront, the Blue Penny Museum is a delightful gem that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Mauritius. Housed in a historic building that once served as the headquarters for the New Mauritius Docks Company, this charming museum offers visitors an engaging journey through time. It features an impressive collection of stamps and coins, including one of only four pristine copies of the iconic 1847 two-pence indigo blue stamp—an absolute must-see for philatelists!
History of Mauritius and their famous stamps. Blue and Red Penny. You can see the originals which were bought back to Mauritius in 1993, but only few minutes every hour (the light turns on), not to destroy the stamps. It is only about "Post Office" versus "Post Paid" :-)
Tomas J — Google review
Must see if you are in Port Louis. Small but very nice museum about history of Mauritius. There is also the famous stamps Blue Penny and Red Penny. These stamps are lit for 10 minutes every hour. Very interesting things about post history. Highly recommend if you are in Mauricius.
Radka N — Google review
Take the time to go around at least twice as you'll miss things worth seeing on the first circuit. The Malcolm de Chazal exhibition was worth seeing if you like that sort of thing and included in the entrance fee. Not really my taste.
Peter M — Google review
Very little museum about the history of Mauritius and the famous postmarks. These did not impress me, but could be interesting for philatelists.
Volker K — Google review
Very beautiful location with a lot of history showcased. Lots of art and history about Mauritius 🇲🇺 Definitely learnt a lot about Mauritius and it’s history. The arts works are very impress and you will really appreciate it if you are into art 🖼️ There’s also postage stamps on display with loads of information about the Mauritius postal system. Lots of fantastic sculptures to admire as well. You aren’t allowed to take photos so please be aware of this. It’s open from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays/public holidays. Try to plan your visit for the early part of the day. Entrance is about Rs245 as a tourist.
Mohbeen D — Google review
Great museum to visit even if you are not a stamps guy. Beside the world famous blue and red Mauritius stamp you can visit a nice exhibition on the history of Mauritius. Keep in mind, that the blue Mauritius stamp is only visible for 5 minutes per hour because of conservative reasons. At our visit it was from xx:20 pm to xx:25 pm
Felix B — Google review
Review: Visit one of the last stamps of the Blue penny and seed penny. What makes it so special? The misprint in 1847 includes Post Office on the stamps and was soon changed to Post Paid. For conservation, the originals are illuminated only temporarily. So make sure to inquire about the time, when the stamps are illuminated. Parking: non-free parking slot of the waterfront shopping mall
Max H — Google review
Foreigners are discriminated against here through higher prices. The blue Mauritius logo was visible in the dark and barely visible.

Caudan Waterfront is more than just a shopping destination; it's a lively entertainment hub suitable for families. The complex offers various activities perfect for children, including a cinema showing family-friendly films and diverse casual eateries catering to all tastes. Live performances and art installations in the open areas add to the vibrant atmosphere enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
Vibrant Spot with Beautiful Views and Great Shopping! Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis is definitely one of the must-visit spots in Mauritius. The location is stunning — right on the water with lovely views of the harbor and mountains. It has a great mix of local boutiques, international brands, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere. The craft market and souvenir shops are perfect for picking up gifts or local handmade items. I especially enjoyed the open-air vibe and the street performances that give the area a fun, cultural touch. The food court and cafes offer a decent variety, though prices are slightly on the higher side. Parking is available but can be a bit crowded during weekends or holidays. Overall, it's a fantastic place to shop, eat, and relax by the water. A bit more local cultural representation and better maintenance in certain areas would make it a 5-star destination.
Anujay S — Google review
The most vibrant and happening place in Port Louis. The entire area is filled with hustle and bustle. Ample eatery options. For cheaper food options you can visit the nearby central market. There are paid parking facilities as well.
Nikhil P — Google review
This is a very beautiful place where you can enjoy a calm and relaxing evening. The clear water, the ships standing in the harbor, and the buildings around it make the view even more attractive. Le Caudan Waterfront is one of the most popular commercial spots in Port Louis. You get shopping, banks, restaurants, a cinema, a casino and a marina in one place. There is also a five star hotel. It was the first shopping mall in Mauritius, and it still stays popular because of its modern style. You also find a bronze statue of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam here. Nearby at Place Mahe de Labourdonnais there is a statue of Governor Mahe de Labourdonnais, which is part of the same complex. I spent great time here with my friend. After that we walked to the beautiful street decorated with colorful ☔ umbrellas, which created a very charming scene. The best part for me was the good ♿🧑🏼‍🦯👩🏼‍🦯accessibility. Wheelchair users and other differently abled persons can move around this area with ease.

Caudan Waterfront – A Must-Visit Spot in Port Louis 🇲🇺🌊 Visited Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis (North Mauritius) on Oct 03 during our family vacation — and it was such a lively and beautiful experience! 😍✨ It’s a vibrant shopping and leisure centre right by the port, offering stunning views of the sea and city 🌆⛵. We had a delicious Indian lunch at Namaste Restaurant 🍛🇮🇳, followed by some yummy gelato ice creams 🍦 — perfect for the warm day! Clicked wonderful photos 📸 across the waterfront — colorful umbrellas, boats, and modern shops make it a picturesque place to spend a few hours. Highly recommend visiting Caudan Waterfront for food, shopping, and beautiful views — a perfect blend of culture and modern charm 💙🌴

Lovely shopping district. We really enjoyed the indoor craft market, though shop around first, we noticed the same things were 100-200 rupees more in some places than others . Not cheap shopping, but some lovely souvenirs. The umbrellas lining the street are very cool and there are some nice shops. Definitely worth a visit.

Very modern and busy commercial area in the capital city of Mauritius Port Louise. A lot of brand- shops, mingled with local gift shops, art center and restaurants. Stone bridges connect the parts of the area. Half a day is the typical time to spend here.

Located next to the Jardin de la Compagnie, the Natural History Museum in Mauritius is a hidden gem that showcases the history and wildlife of the island. The museum features an impressive collection of exhibits, including a reconstituted skeleton of the famous extinct Dodo bird, as well as various bones from Mauritius and around the world. Visitors can explore displays of birds, fish, shells, insects, and learn all about the unique Dodo bird in The Dodo Gallery.
Fun little free museum in a historic building. Worth a stop if you have time. You can cover everything in 30 minutes. I really enjoyed the WWII exhibition.
Andrew H — Google review
Such an amazing museum! We saw plenty of shells and beautiful species of fish, sun fish, Marlin, Whales, Dolphins and sharks. We also saw the symbol of Mauritius - the Dodo bird. It's really interesting. At the second floor, there is a exposition of The World War I and II. Ticket is for free. It takes around 20-30 minutes.
Veselina S — Google review
Important place for nature lovers. This museum exhibits the complete skeleton of Dodo bird and a wide collection of other species. Entrance is free.
Sudheera G — Google review
Natural History Museum – Port Louis A calm and quiet spot for a short visit. The museum features a small exhibition of animals and a section on World War II upstairs. Entry is free, and it took us about 30 minutes to explore everything. A simple yet interesting stop if you're in the area.
Mrs B — Google review
It's nice to go and see the history of Dodo bird. The museum is small and old and not too well maintained, but it is worth spending 15 minutes there. The entrance is free.
Sorin I — Google review
It’s amazing that the museum is free of charge. The exhibition is simple, but there is definitely plenty to see and read. It was really interesting! What is truly striking is the incredible story of the dodo. It’s remarkable how the islanders managed to turn this tragedy — the story of human cruelty, greed, and selfishness — into a beautiful legend, where the dodo appears on their national currency and has become a national symbol. As I read about the extinction of this big, kind bird, I can’t help but feel deeply ashamed for humanity. It seems to me that penguins might be next — just as defenseless and peaceful, and of no real interest to us for breeding as meat or feathers.
Petr L — Google review
A small space that really ought to have better funding given the unique flora and fauna of Mauritius, but still a nice informative space. Great for kids and one of the few places in the world to see a complete Dodo skeleton. The surrounding area also has some fascinating parks and statues to get to know the history of Port Louis better
Kellyn B — Google review
The museum exhibits various replica of fauna and flora. The museum is the oldest in Mauritius. The museum building was constructed in 1880. On 22 December 2021, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth inaugurated the Mauritian Ex-Servicemen's World War I and World War II Tribute Gallery inside the museum.

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Perched high on a hill overlooking the harbor in Port Louis, Fort Adelaide, also known as La Citadelle, is a 19th-century military fortress built by the British. This sturdy black basalt structure was constructed to counter a potential invasion by the French and control local opposition to the abolition of slavery. Today, it offers panoramic views of the capital, Moka mountain range, Champs de Mar horse racing track, and the harbor.
It is not the forte. It is another historical place at Port Louis. It is free admission and plenty of parking space available. You can see the whole Port Louis from this place with 360 view!
Ir S — Google review
The fort holds a lot of history, but sadly, there’s no information inside to educate visitors about it. There isn’t much to explore within the fort itself - you simply stroll around, enjoy the elevated views, and take pictures. The city of Port Louis looks stunning from up here, offering great photo opportunities of both the city and the fort. Entry is free, and you can park your car right outside before heading in.
Paulomi R — Google review
The entrance is free, you can walk around the walls of this fortress, but there is not much to do when you arrive. Only the views on Port Louis city and nearby hills are amazing. There is no pernament exhibition and just several cannons show historic importance of this place which now serves only as a viewpoint or parking place. Parking is possible inside/outside of the fortress and It’s also feee.

Perched on a hill overlooking Port Louis, Citadelle (Fort Adelaide) is a 19th-century fortress built by the British. Named after the wife of King William IV, Queen Adelaide, it offers panoramic views of the city, harbor, and surrounding mountains. Constructed from black basalt rocks in a Moorish style, the fort was intended to protect the port and quell potential local unrest but was never used for military purposes. Today, it stands as a historical landmark offering insights into the colonial era. Visitors can explore the well-preserved grounds, view old cannons, and enjoy the 360-degree vistas. The former barracks have been transformed into **boutique shops**. The fort is also becoming a cultural hub, hosting events and performances. A visit to Citadelle provides a blend of history and stunning scenery, making it a worthwhile stop in Port Louis. It's recommended to visit in the late afternoon to enjoy cooler temperatures and potentially a beautiful sunset over the city.
Samir S — Google review
We visited Citadelle Fort (Fort Adelaide) on Oct 03 as part of our Port Louis city itinerary, and it was definitely worth the stop! 🏰 Perched atop a hill overlooking the capital city, this 19th-century British fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of Port Louis, the harbor, and the surrounding mountains ⛰️🌊. The fort, built from black basalt rocks in a Moorish style, has been beautifully preserved and gives a glimpse into Mauritius’ colonial history 🇲🇺. Walking around the fort was a pleasant experience — we admired the old cannons, explored the courtyard, and even checked out the small boutique shops now housed in the former barracks 🛍️. The place has a peaceful vibe, and it’s easy to spend time soaking in the views and taking pictures 📸. Highly recommend visiting in the late afternoon to enjoy the cool breeze and possibly catch a gorgeous sunset over Port Louis 🌅.
Shashank A — Google review
Citadelle Fort Adelaide is definitely one of the best spots to soak in the beauty of Port Louis! The moment I reached the top, the panoramic view of the entire city was absolutely amazing 👏😍 From the bustling streets to the colorful rooftops and even the sparkling port, everything looked picture-perfect from above. The fort itself carries a strong historical vibe, with its old stone walls and peaceful surroundings. It’s the kind of place where you can take a slow walk, breathe in the fresh air, and just enjoy the scenery. 🌬️🌤️ Whether you're into photography, history, or just want a chill place to relax, this is a must-visit when you're in Port Louis. Perfect for capturing stunning shots or simply enjoying a quiet moment while admiring the view. 📸💙 Highly recommended if you’re exploring Mauritius! 🌺🇲🇺

Honestly a very boring place , the city views from the top are better than the fort itself , the cannons seem so out of place . Anyways don’t waste much time here it’s not worth it

Aapravasi Ghat is a captivating destination that offers visitors a truly remarkable experience. The site boasts stunning natural beauty and an array of fascinating attractions to explore.
Really well done exhibit to accompany the heritage site. It tells the story of the "great experiment" to use indentured labour after slavery was abolished and the conditions that these labours worked under. Would recommend anyone to visit for an hour, but especially Mauritians. Plus, it's free entry.
Kyras S — Google review
Significant, place to learn about Mauritius & how culture has been shaped due to Slavery in the past. Lots of details photographs & historical articles that anyone can take a look. Located on the bay of Trou Fanfaron, in the capital of Port-Louis, the Aapravasi Ghat is the remains of an immigration depot, the site from where modern indentured labour Diaspora emerged.
Ameya G — Google review
A quiet place for reflection and pondering upon history and our ancestors who came so far in search of work on the sugarcane fields, a unesco world heritage site - it’s maintained very well
Dipanjan R — Google review
Aapravasi Ghat is seriously something else. It is like stepping back in time to this place where so many people, about half a million, first arrived as indentured laborers. It is fascinating to think that this one spot in Mauritius was the first for the British, and that it totally changed the country. Even though you only see parts of the old buildings, you can just feel the history there. If you are in Mauritius, you absolutely have to go there.
Ranjan B — Google review
It's world heritage site at Port Luis in Mauritius. It's in the memory of people taken for the agricultural work from many countries by britishers, wherever they were ruling in early 1800. These workers are responsible for today's prosperous country due to their hard work. Today 4th/ 5th generation of them are well educated, prominent citizens reaching to the posts of even Prime Minister. This memorial is good efforts to show their sacrifices and leading a hard life.
Ashokkumar P — Google review
This place is a must-visit for anyone, tourists or locals alike, as it holds deep historical significance for Mauritius. There’s no entrance fee, and you learn so much about the immigrants from India and other parts of Asia who came to this island. However, it’s important to understand that the so-called “free” or “indentured” labor wasn’t what it seemed. Migrants were brought here under false promises and endured harsh working conditions. The museum also highlights the hero who played a pivotal role in addressing these injustices. It’s an emotional experience, I had tears in my eyes by the end of the tour.
Paulomi R — Google review
Very well maintained museum. One can understand the history of the place and also good old stuff to view there.
Abhishek J — Google review
Very important part of Mauritian history. The museum explains how the British "Great Experiment" was planned and under which condition indentured labour force, mainly from India, was brought to the island. Well designed exhibition, interesting pictures and maps, a ship model and good descriptions; the visit is definitely worth it!

Le Courtyard Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that beautifully marries French and Mauritian flavors in an elegant setting. With its charming open-air seating, guests can bask in the warm sunshine while savoring exquisite dishes like Foie Gras with Blueberry reduction and Scallop Carpaccio paired with Avocado Salsa. The ambiance is serene, making it a perfect escape from the bustling city life.
This restaurant offers very good french cuisine, complemented by some Mauritian dishes. The service is attentive and professional. While the prices are on the higher side, both the quality and generous portions can justify it. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a nice meal in a welcoming atmosphere.

Five stars! Excellent food and service at Le Courtyard. I especially recommend the veal carpaccio for starters – delicate and full of flavor. For the main course, I had the Babonne fish, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. A true gourmet experience in lovely surroundings.

Colonial house restaurant. Bar is available. Love the atmosphere. Small fountain at the entrance. Friendly staffs. Petits pain maison chaud offered. They taste really good with butter. No parking facility. Toilets are clean and air-conditioned. Soothing background music. They serve alcoholic drinks during the day. Definitely pricey but worth it. The coeur de palmiste was full of flavors.

Lambic Beer Bar is a popular after-work gastropub located in a 19th-century colonial house in Port Louis, Mauritius. The bar-restaurant offers a wide selection of around 30 beers, mainly from Belgium, including Belgian Trappist beer and Tequila-flavored French beer. Additionally, they serve Mauritian craft beer from the island's only microbrewery.

Not enough food choice and the food was disappointing and expensive. The service was terrible. Some nice beer choices though and the rustic place is nice.

The food was great yet the beer managed to find a way to outshine the well cared for tasty morsels I popped in my mouth. There is something for all here, even Budweiser. Get the Nation’ale, St. Bernardus and finish with a dessert like chalice of Kasteel Rouge, Belgian cherry beer.

Chinese restaurant
Grand Canton Restaurant is a chinese restaurant in the heart of Port Louis. It serves some of the most authentic and familiar dishes from China, all cooked in a range of broths and then greased with sauces. This restaurant is perfect for anyone looking to try some of the stars of Chinese cuisine, as it offers a large variety of specialties, from seafood to chicken and vegetables.
Outstanding food. We’ve gone to many Chinese restaurant in Sydney and this is up there with the best. The duck skin was the crispiest ever! They make their own chilli sauce reduction and it’s delish, no vinegar. Subtle and just the right heat. Super friendly staff too. Also, Chinatown in Port Louis is like the Chinatown you see in the old movies; it’s chaotic and smells with 1 million different aromas and it’s so alive. And the final hot tip if you have any leftovers after your meal get takeaway because there are definitely people on the street who will gladly accept a free meal 🖖🏽

Classical Chinese restaurant. Had a really nice experience and the food was great. Despite being almost full, they did manage to send our food quite rapidly. I discovered tofu under a new concept and it was a very good surprise. The only issue around that side of China Town is to find yourself a decent parking space!

I recently visited Grand Canton with my family, and we were thoroughly impressed! From the moment we walked in, the warm ambiance and attentive service set the tone for a memorable dining experience. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and every single one was a hit. The Peking duck was perfectly roasted with crispy skin and tender meat, served with all the traditional fixings. The whole steamed fish was fresh and delicately seasoned, a true standout. We also enjoyed the fried calamari, which was golden and crisp without being greasy. The lemon chicken had a bright, tangy flavor that balanced beautifully with the savory black bean prawns. Paired with fluffy white rice, the meal was both satisfying and well-rounded. Overall, the food was absolutely delicious and well worth the price. Grand Canton delivered on quality, taste, and value. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine with loved ones!

I came here to Grand Canton restaurant to explore the local cuisine. I'm Muslim, so before dining here, I ask the owner (Mr. Christopher - I got his name in asking people in Mauritius Chinatown) if the food is Halal, he told me that Grand Canton's chicken and beef are Halal but doesn't have the Halal license. I trusted him wholeheartedly. Then, later, a Muslim local brother told me that Grand Canton uses the same used oil that fried pork and wok to fry the beef and chicken. Hey Grand Canton, be honest and pay your staff decently so you can get proper and trained servers. And don't lie to your customers, especially a Muslim. You're lucky I'm not a bad guy, or I'd rampage your premises.

They are always helpful, attentive, and genuinely kind. Overall, the food quality stands out as one of the best.

Very nice service and calm atmosphere. The portions are quite big and the food is tasty. 1 portion of butter chicken is enough for 2 person. The cheese naan was also well filled and cooked. Waiting times might be a bit long but it was worth it.

Chinese restaurant
First Restaurant is a renowned Chinese eatery in Port Louis, located at the Angle Route Royale & Corderie St. It holds historical significance as it was the first restaurant to open its doors in Chinatown. Despite not being the most stylish place in the capital, it offers a unique dining experience with its traditional Chinese interior design featuring distinctive elements such as old-fashioned lamps, bow-covered chairs, vintage wallpaper, and painted columns.
Great food, good ambiance and reasonable price. We gathered with a group of 12 people on 1 table. We were comfortable. Food as usual is delicious at First.

The restaurant keeps the old Chinese fashion in its architecture and in its seating which looks nice. They have a good menu consisting of 109 dishes. We took some time to go through it and choose the food!! We ordered - fried rice 'first' style and rice Chinese style with chicken and shrimp with sausages. The fried rice was really good and the other one was just 'okay'. Washrooms are available which are good and clean. The service was also good. The problems you might face are noticeability and parking. They don't provide parking, we need to find a spot to park our vehicle. The restaurant is situated in the first floor of the building. On the ground floor, there will be only a door and the borad. Take the stairs and get there.

Feb24- went approx @13:45, it closes at 14:30. They still served us and the waiter was lovely. Helpful when we asked and pleasant. We had sweetcorn and crab meat soup, wine vermicelli (meat, egg and prawns) and cracking praqs (battered). Note: the dishes don't fully list ingredients- luckily the waiter told us vermicelli has meat in! Excluded and fine. Was a bit oily. Prawns were good the soup was divine. Paid £24 approx including drinks.

Certainly not my first time at First Restaurant. They did a great job of maintaining the standard after all these years. The Peking Duck was delicious as usual and the Cantonese fried rice and sizzling mixed seafood platter were solid 8 out of 10. The portions are quite large, service is relatively quick and prices are reasonable. The table covers and chairs need upgrading, but food-wise and price-wise, no complaints at all.

Was at First Restaurant a few times during my 1 week stay in Mauritius. As usual food was amazing, service staff courteous as always. One of the few places which have kept up the standards over the many years!!! Best Chinese Restaurant in Mauritius by far.

Small entrance (a bit scary too) and two flights of stairs to climb. Entrance is easy to miss. But inside it is really lovely. If you get one of the window tables you get to witness the hustle and bustle of the nearby city from above, which is unusual and nice. We had not been there in 17 years. The dishes are still very good. Among the starters we recommend the seafood rolls as they are different from the usual ones. The soups are excellent and served in generous portions (for the same price other restaurants give you barely one portion, not a whole bowl). Finally great work by the management in maintaining a relaxing atmosphere inside by playing jazz-like music instead of the noise you will hear elsewhere.

Don't worry about the dingy entrance on this place: this local restaurant is excellent and budget friendly! Don't make the mistake of going and not ordering the succulent Peking duck (canard lacqué). Ask for extra green onions & cucumbers. One duck is good for four people; we also enjoyed the Chinese soup as appetizer.

Wonderful ambience, joyfully served, value for #money. Great service. For parking you need to negotiate before going. Call for #reservations if possible. The taste were nice and delicious. Highly recommended for #pork and #beef lovers. Next I.ll try the #perking-duck. Overall had a lovely night with family. #Card payment accepted. Toilet available. Clean and tidy place. Sanitizer and temperature check available.
