Amazing building! The Chapter House alone is remarkable and beautiful. Fascinating scissor arches in the main structure. Then you can spend another 2 hours+ in the Bishop's Palace and it's beautiful gardens!
We visited Wells Cathedral on the recommendation of a former Wells Cathedral School student, and we enjoyed our time immensely. On entry one is struck by the magnificent 14th Century Scissors Arches that support the tower, then as one looks at the walls, that the cathedral is almost completely Early English Gothic style. Intricate carvings, some amusing (a man working to remove a thorn from his foot, someone with a toothache) are found everywhere. An amazing 14th Century astronomical clock - the second oldest in England - still works and marks quarter hours with a figure named Jack Blandifers striking bells with his hand and both feet while a set of knights on horseback joust each other. The north side of the cathedral holds the Chapter House, an absolutely stunning octagon with soaring fan vaulting and terrific acoustics. Outside, the West Front, which contains about 300 sculpted figures is currently undergoing restoration work, and because of this, much of the surface is hidden behind scaffolding while the stonemasons do their bit. Practical details: Admission when we visited was £15.00, with kids free. One can also purchase a Joint Ticket that includes entry to the adjacent Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. There is a nice café and well-stocked gift shop. Volunteer “Highlights” tours are available, and we spent an excellent hour with Mark. Parking was initially a bit of a challenge, but we eventually found space along side the Cathedral Green. Other parking options are available nearby.
Situated at one of the quietest towns in western England. The cathedral is an architectural marvel. Every inch of the walls tells you story from ancient to medieval history of the Christianity. A beautiful place where tranquility meets serenity.
This is a must see if you are in the area. The cathedral is lovely in all aspects. Make sure to do a docent tour, of which there are several. These volunteers have a wealth of knowledge, a good sense of humor, and will teach you many things. The architecture, furnishings, and artistry are evident everywhere in this fabulous cathedral.
At the foot of the Mendips Hills lies the charming town of Wells, famous primarily for its magnificent Cathedral Church of St. Andrew. In 705, an abbey was built on the site of a Roman mausoleum; the baptismal font from this abbey is still in use and is thus the oldest surviving object in the cathedral. In 909, the abbey church became the seat of Athelm, the first Bishop of Wells, a role the cathedral has fulfilled since 1245. Construction of the current cathedral began around 1180 and was completed in 1306. However, the building immediately proved too small, so work began on the cathedral extension, which was completed in 1490. Due to the various construction phases, the church also features various Gothic styles. The first phase is characterized by the Early English Gothic style, the second by the Decorated Gothic style, and the towers are in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The church was damaged twice, during the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion, but the damage was repaired each time. In the mid-19th and late 20th centuries, the cathedral underwent a major restoration, allowing the 300,000 visitors who visit annually to admire the building in all its splendor. Wells Cathedral: an unmissable highlight of ecclesiastical architecture!
This is the best cathedral in Europe wish I could go every day to wells. the clock inside is very good. Must be a lot of work & cost to keep it going
Stunning piece of history which is so accessible to all. Situated in the centre of Wells, in amongst so many places to see. For me one of the highlights of the West country. So great
Beautiful cathedral, we very much enjoyed looking round, so much to see . The weather was not on are side, but we did look outside and up.

One of the most interesting and beautiful places I have visited. Spent 6 hours there today covering all the buildings and gardens. Went on a guided tour at 11 a.m. to see inside the buildings which were great. Then at 12 noon a guided tour of the gardens. Excellent tour guide - very entertaining and informative. You can walk on the ramparts if you can cope with the steps and look over to the moat. Loads of lovely trees, shrubs and flowers in the gardens along with a small lake and waterfall. £14 each for adults entrance, there is a good cafe and toilets. Disabled access is good to most areas and they are refitting a lift so you will be able to access the upper floor of the palace. Well worth a day out and you also have the Wells Cathedral as a backdrop.
My two children (ages 10 and 13) and I had a fabulous day out here on the Viking and Falconry day in September '25. Lots to see, beautiful gardens and in the heart of the city of Wells itself. We loved it!
Lovely place, really enjoyed and it's well worth a visit. It is cheaper to buy a combined ticket fir the Cathedral and Palace if you are planning to visit both places while you are in Wells. There is a nice cafe, gift shop and good amenities.
Excellent day out at the Bishop's Palace. 14 acres of gardens, plus the chapel, palace itself and ruined abbey. Plenty to do and see and do try to take advantage of an audio tour with informative discussions about all sorts of interesting things found there. You may also be fortunate enough to see the famous swans ringing the bell at the entrance in the hope of being fed! Great day out.
Absolutely beautiful place. Great service, lovely cafe shops around and in. Besides, history and English translation you will find many different ways to spend day around. Recommend
Wonderful wander around the grounds, even if a bird did a poo on wife's trousers, after grounds we went round the palace 😀 Wonderful day September 2025
A great guided tour of the palace then had another one around the gardens. All included in the price of the tickets. The volunteer guide was excellent and very Friendly.
So gorgeous and underrated. Probably one of the most beautiful places in the UK. The gardens have actually been fashioned so well you feel at peace and in awe of the place you are in.

Step back in history with this unique mediaeval cobbled Street. Very impressive and definitely worth a visit as it only a short walk from the cathedral. 👍🏻
Beautiful cobbled street. Well worth a short visit as it's located right next to the cathedral.
A medieval street with a cobbled road very interesting and worth a visit the Wells cathedral is a stroll away and the city is definitely worth exploring as full of history.
A beautiful street, a real step back in time, it is great that these houses still exist. They are the oldest in the whole of Europe, and they are being used for what they were being used for when they were first built.
Fantastic historic street. Oldest continually occupied medieval street in Europe. Connected to Wells Cathedral as residents are Vicars Choral.
Beautiful old street.
Amazing medieval road. Very peaceful and ancient. Every things around here has scent of history
Read about the history of this spot before visiting. It's a wonderful little stop off next to the cathedral.

Fantastic market with lots of stalls. Right next to lovely walks around the cathedral, park and countryside. The Parsons Nose sells amazing burgers and the flower stall can’t be beat for quality, price and service. Always enjoy a mooch around!
Beautiful - in a physical, visual and spiritual way. Quite exceptional. One of those places you always know of but can easily ignore due to familiarity. But don't! This is a place that you have to go and see. It's almost 2 worlds in one. On the one hand, a very pretty market town (though it is a City), with spring water running down the side of the road and a lovely market square with shops, cafés and restaurants and, if you're lucky, some great busking. On the other, an almost mind-blowing journey back 100s of years to a world you can almost imagine. So much history that you can feel it as well as see and imagine it, from the glorious cathedral to the beautifully serene river/moat-bounded Bishop's Palace gardens, to the Vicar's Close - one of if not the oldest residential street in Europe. We found it calming, emotional and extraordinary. And of course, who can forget Blackadder's baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wells! Of little relevance, but an interesting link for those who enjoyed the series!
Parking was easy and the streets are flat and navigable. We went on market Saturday and the town was lively and bustling with locals out with their kids and dogs. Felt right at home even being from the US.
We visited on a Saturday whilst on a weekend break in nearby Glastonbury. The market is in a wonderful setting in the historic heart of Wells. A good range of stalls selling a variety of goods.
A great variety of stalls. Food, fabrics, furniture, and so much more. But the jewellery... THE JEWELLERY!!! AMAZING!!! Polly Victoria's stall is a MUST visit!
Wells market is excellent. We went in February and thoroughly enjoyed it. Went came back last weekend and it was even better. Lots of great products and amazing food. If we lived closer we’d be going all the time. Lots or reasonably priced parking near by and Union Street car parks has public toilets.
Went on Wednesday was a lovely market they had lots there to chose from. Plants and flowers looked lovely definitely worth a visit
I really loved this place. It was so colourful and vibrant. There was an excellent variety of stalls which sold fresh food. There were also fresh fruit and vegetable stands. There was one lovely stall which was very near the entrance to The Bishop's Palace. The clothing showcased all of the colours of the rainbow. I am far too shy to wear anything that colourful, but I can see the appeal. I also like the fact that the vendors let you look at stuff as opposed to asking several questions so that you feel obligated to buy something. It is an ideal place to spend a few hours. The Town Crier was amazing . It was extremely entertaining to see him.

Like going back to a primeval time. Deep damp woods covered in epiphytes, caves line the steep banks now covered with vegetation and earth, at the top of the gorge the view is enchanting. Within the gorge itself seems to be a sanctuary for birds. The place is alive. A true gem. The paths and steps are steep and can be challenging, but it's well worth it. Will be taking my family back there but will have to wear the youngen in a carrier for the ascents!
Didn't know what to expect but the view at the end of a shortish but tougher climb/walk was worth it. My 9 and 6 year old were fine with it though with a little hand holding in places. It can be narrow, steep and footing unstable in places so it's definitely a walk for the more able. My terrier was in her happy place but dogs must be on leads. It was very dry when we did it, I'm not sure how it would be after more wet weather through the winter.
Beautiful place for an afternoon walk, peaceful, not many people, with amazing views all over the valley from the top. We did a 4 mile walk with our little dog and it was great. Highly recommended!👌
Beautiful place, but signs to start of walks not very clear. We did the walk back to front. But a beautiful place.
Beautiful place but make sure you choose the right trail for you. As far as I’m aware there are two. Easy and more difficult. I choose the difficult trail which was beautiful however the stone steps were too high for me (5ft 4)so I had to climb the steps. For context my husband is 6ft 2 and found it fine. I would not recommend this route to anyone with small children. I did enjoy but next time I would take the easy route making it easier to get around. Other things to note make sure you have water with you and there is parking to pay by app.
Gorgeous walk. It was a brilliant adventure with a surprising climb through the gorge. Lovely viewing points.
A great place for a short walk. At a slow pace it will take a couple of hours to do the full circuit. If you don't fancy going back the way you came - make use of the paths that run through it and create a larger circuit. The steps in the gorge are a little big so take care of small climbers and keep that in mind if have knee issues
Absolutely beautiful...be aware there are 3 levels of path...its arduous in places...

What a place. Free to visit unlike the Cathedral, which was scandalousat £15 per person. Just make a donation, if you are able to. One of the best ceilings I have seen. A must see, when visiting Wells.
Excellent parish church. On a smaller scale to the Cathedral but worth a look inside as the interior has some interesting features.
Beautiful interior steeped in history, like much of Wells, with lots of unusual artifacts to see and saviour. We met a Dutch couple who thought it was Wells Cathedral! We put them right. Free street parking outside for an hour.
A beautiful church in Wells. We did the tower tour which was £4 per person and you get to see great views of Wells and have a go ringing the bells. (The tower tour is only on Sundays in August and you should book in advance via their email address). The church is notable for it's appearance in Hot Fuzz and features a stunning painted ceiling. We visited the cafe afterwards and had some cream teas which were delicious. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable about the church and its history.
A beautiful church that's easy to overlook, so you may want to make sure you don't. It's free to have a look around and the church has a lovely tiled floor and even lovelier ceiling. The tower is the tallest in Somerset and tours to climb it are available. Donations welcomed as medieval churches are expensive to maintain!
Nice alternative to Wells Cathedral. Beautiful architecture and grounds. Free entry.
Lovely church. Didn't go inside, the grounds look nice, lots of dandelions growing 😊 visited while looking around hot fuzz locations.
Went to the fabulous Crib Festival which is held annually at St.Cuthberts. Around 100 Cribs from around the world and made from a variety of materials, from Banana leaves to Cheese. An absolutely stunning display. I work in Wells and often hear visitors comment on St Cuthbert's, mistaking it for the magnificent Gothic Cathedral in the City. I guess that's because the tower of this church is often seen first by visitors coming from the Glastonbury direct and it's also closest to the Bus Station. It's well worth a visit, in it's own right, at any time of the year. The Angel Roof is quite beautiful.

If visiting Wells, you must pop in this museum, it is well worth a visit. £6 entry, I was there for about 2 hours, it was very informative and interesting. There is a garden area with benches, toilets, and a small shop. The museum is next to Wells Cathedral, which is a must visit, along with Bishop's Palace just under the archway.
We happened to spot this museum as we were exploring Wells Cathedral. The museum is across the road from the cathedral. We were welcomed into the museum by a lovely lady, who gave us some information as to the displays in each room and in which order to visit them. There are some permanent and some temporary displays. One room houses mined objects such as Mendip lead and other minerals, another display provides details about cave diving, and there was a display of pictures by local artists. It is a lovely little museum. Admission is £6 per adult, and there are concessions for children and students. A family ticket is also available for £12. Accessibility isn't very good as the building is a converted house. Some parts are quite narrow, and there are stairs to the upper rooms.
Have visited Wells many times but never been in this small museum. I wish I hadn't bothered. Was met by 2 very unfriendly and unwelcoming staff at the front desk who looked bored. I paid my £6 and they just remained silent. No information was offered on how to look around the museum, where to start or even what there was in there. Also, some of the display rooms were closed or in darkness. Didn't enjoy my visit at all, was slightly shocked by the experience.
An afternoon well spent. Despite the grand exterior, the interior is more vast than expected. A really nice walk of exploration indoors.
Great museum, did not even know it was there an till I just walk upon it, has lots of stuff for all ages from dressing up to a place made to make it look like you are in a cave, and lots of info on cave and history around the area, and had a great talk with the staff about the town and area.
Museum is quite small but has some interesting exhibits. The exhibition on the Wells Asylum was very informative
Its a good place but a tad expensive for what it is. The staff are friendly and its clean and everything, but sadly we didnt find the displays too interesting.
Read the reviews and almost didn’t visit, that would have been a shame this is a great little museum and definitely worth a visit staff were lovely and value for money at£6 so would absolutely recommend

You can shower here for £2.80ish with no membership. Great when you're in a pinch but would be good if cheaper for people in need but I understand why there's a cost. No time limit, decent showers but you'll need to bring your own shower gels and stuff. The lady behind the counter was very understanding , welcoming and helpful.
If I could have given somewhere between 3 and 4 I would have. It's a fun pool for kids and the jacuzzi was a big hit with mine. Very friendly staff and the cleanliness and facilities were fine. My criticism is that there's a lot going on with different groups at the same time and the 'river' is not working. Once you're used to the app it's fine for booking and timetables. I wish there weren't so many different companies running leisure centres. The outside gives the impression that it might have been closed down. Just needs a bit of tlc and a strimmer really.
Very nicely designed swimming pool and plenty of changing rooms. Only complaint was that the floors were filthy in the changing area. Not somewhere you would want to walk barefoot.
I wanted to use the sauna and steam for an hour. I am directed to book online. My registration is required, which requires me to provide personal and contact information and signs me up to lots of direct marketing. I attempt to register 3 times, without success. I call the desk to book over the phone. Noone picks up. Do they want my money!!
I visited the facility on Sunday for a charity fundraiser. The room was air-conditioned and spinning bikes were great .. Generally the intererior downstairs looked a little tired and could do with a refresh The refreshment area was closed which was disappointing not just for myself but others also Their was alot of parents and children around as well. I'm sure the centre would benefit from this being open especially at the weekend ...
Rang 4 Times over 2 separate occasions to enquire about racquet hire for badminton- no one answered the phone. On the fusion app there is no mention of racquet hire and no one to help on reception over the phone! Not too pleased
Love to take the kids swimming here for the family fun swim, sadly the lazy river and the water cannons are never running these days no matter which session we attend. Bit of a shame. Otherwise nice pool to go to.
Lovely staff members here, all very helpful and informative. Loved the cafe as well, freshly made cake, beautiful.

A fascinating and unique site, certainly the only one of its kind in the South West. Saved from destruction and cared for in trust by a remarkable group of volunteers, it can be appreciated as a place of burial, an exposition of the heritage relating to the Mendip Hospital (formerly the Somerset and Bath Lunatic Asylum) or simply as peaceful green space. Generally only open to visitors on Sunday, but you can volunteer to help maintain the space on Thurdays.
This was a really interesting place to visit , we were given a talk by one of the fantastic volunteers who know so much history about the place. I much appreciated the time given to us and also the hard work put in by other volunteers so we can enjoy the story of this old cemetery 🪦. If you visit it’s free but donations are very welcome. Definitely worth a visit. 👍🏻
Great little visit, volunteers were very welcoming and helpful. Good exhibit inside the chapel though males may not want to read it all. Free to see though a donation is greatly appreciated
Enchanting cemetery with beautiful hand crafted sculptures. Lovely volunteers who keep the cemetery paths mowed and talk you through the history in the Chapel. Take your camera as there is plenty of wild insects, flowers & birds as well as interesting artifacts. Tip; Take some money to donate, buy some honey or small wooden gifts.
A must visit. Volunteers were great, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Donations are all that is keeping this hospital cemetery going, so please visit! It's a lovely location in Wells and highlights the problems of those who suffered with mental health issues in the 1800s, a worthwhile visit. They open twice a week on a Wednesday and Sunday's from 11am to 15.45pm.
The volunteers have a vast knowledge of the place & were really happy to chat, tranquil, interesting & thought provoking.
I visited today with my daughter for the first time, and as I walked into the cemetery I felt how peaceful and lovely it felt, certainly not the last resting place of over 3000 people. The volunteers, four ladies were so knowledgeable, and you can see how they felt a responsibility towards the people whose last resting place it was. The small chapel told the stories of some of the poor people who were residents of the Hospital as well as the supervisors who looked after them. It was an eye opener, and I felt quite privileged to have visited and found what is fairly recent history. I shall visit again, and tell as many people as I can to also do so. They exist on donations, so very well worth visiting.
Incredibly moving, so many fascinating stories from residents and staff, knowledge and kind volunteer staff.

Absolutely fabulous selection of art of all styles and media. Many very affordable pieces which would. are amazing gifts or mementoes of a visit to Wells. My husband and I have been searching for a piece of art to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary since last July and shortlisted at least three pieces here before finally making a selection. The owner was charming and very helpful. Definitely somewhere I would recommend
Wonderful gallery with good range of beautiful crafts, glass, ceramics and paintings. Ideal place to go Christmas shopping and then buy something for yourself too. Many things reasonably priced for the quality.
We brought a fantastic painting here today by Jo Thorne. The gallery owner was friendly and helpful and not at all pushy. Loads of lovely art in the shop and a really great experience buying there
Good range of sculpture, paintings, panoramic photographs, ceramics, etc. Nice background jazz music to accompany browsing. Also, the owner was able to supply background information on artists who produced the items purchased.
Lovely gallery with a great mix of beautiful artwork pieces and reasonable prices too! I always end up getting something whenever I visit.
A vibrant gallery, well curated and appealing to all budgets. Tucked away slightly at the bottom of the High Street, but absolutely worth wandering down to. Two floors, the lower sells well known and local artists, very professional, and upstairs the gallery showcases mini studios. Great mix of affordable sculpture, ceramics, glass, painting and photography. Often has a specific exhibtion worth watching out for. I love the place, do go!
Called in to the A2 gallery for a browse and was pleasantly surprised by how this has been revived and updated to provide a splendid exhibition of pieces from local artists and artists further afield. It is well worth a visit. It offers art lovers a variety of subject matter and techniques: pottery, sculpture, watercolour, acrylic, oil, collage, and print all beautifully displayed within a gallery that's much larger on the inside than the outer appearance suggests. Even so, it retains its "boutique" atmosphere. Visitors especially should put this on their list. You won't be disappointed.
My partner and I who are new to Wells came to look around the town before we moved to get a feel for where we were moving to. We are both artists so have an interest in what's on offer as far as local artists in the area. We are both very nice, unassuming people who wanted to browse the shop to see if there was anything that struck our fancy for our new place, and as a way to view beautiful local art. As we were browsing a woman says to us that "she'd be really impressed if we bought something". I just responded with "I'd love to" as I was slightly taken aback by the comment. I ignored it and continued to look around the shop, then another gentleman walked in and she said it again in front of us and him. We left and I haven't been back since. If anyone ever asked me about the art shops in Wells I certainly wouldn't be able to say anything too positive about this one, and I only like to say nice things. It's bad form, I'm afraid. Guilt tripping people into buying things is a terrible tactic, and I've own my own business and is certainly not the way to conduct it. I look like a young person for my age, but you should never make a generalization or comment like that. I walk past it often and feel sad that I can't go back in, in fear of being ridiculed in such a way.

Incredible array of artists skills and work on show. Such great quality. Been to many sites showing of artwork and works. This is by far the best. Bought a few things, why not!? My favourite piece attached picture ❤️❤️
Well what can I say, this shop is a hidden gem in Wells. I have to pop in every time I am in the city to see what goodies are new! It is friendly and the products on sale are just amazing! Thank you for always being so welcoming
What an inspiration. Creative genius in so many pieces. Great prices. I wish I lived closer.
Really nice experience. Prices reasonable to I bought more than I was expecting to:)
I thought there would be more in the shop. Quite expensive . Needs more variety. Nice cards .
A wonderful place with fantastic craft work. Friendly, but non-instrusive staff.
Wonderful original crafts by a selected membership of local makers.
Some very nice things from some talented craftsmen.

The recreation ground has the perfect relaxation spots with a beautiful view of the Mendip Landscape, St. Cuthbert Cathedral and Wells Cathedral. On site, there is a child safe playground with safe equipment for kids to play with while you relax and take in the scenery.
A really nice open green area it's a great place to relax and unwind with plenty of space to sit in the sun and lots of shaded areas there are public toilets here to and a bandstand that looks great. There is a fun looking play park and open space for a kick about.
Nice park and play area, great for a picnic, away from the crowds
Brilliant place for children to have fun and burn off some energy. With Swings, roundabout, giant seesaw and more. The big feature of the park is the castle which has plenty of climbing places, a rope walk and slide, great place to stimulate the imagination. Plenty of space to relax and have a picnic. The park is in the centre of wells, just a short walk from the High Street and close to the Bishops Palace, Wells Cathedral and the Market Place which has markets on Wednesday's and Saturdays. There is plenty of parking close by.
This is such a great spot on Wells; great for a walk, playing with your dog, taking the children to the playground, play some football or throw a frisbee, you can also walk a little more and sit down by the moat and enjoy the view, the quiet and, of course, the ducks and the swans.
Came her with my 7 month and 2 year old to the park. Fort was amazing. Lots to do there swings little and big had a little climbing fame house and other bits Car park right there it was a pay and display. Clean and tidy.
Beautiful, Wells Cathedral. There was a service in the early evening with the full choir and organ, which sounded amazing and spiritually moving!
I love Wells and beautiful Cathedral. Place to see nice views. You can spend all day with family having picnic or relaxing. Kids love playground which is not far from Cathedral.
