The lunch offering was amazing, especially the mushroom soup – absolutely incredible! And the museum – that was truly a fantastic experience. The use of XR elements was very well done, and the 360-degree images provided a great way to explore the area! A big thanks 🙏
This is well worth the drive off the beaten path and the steep price. This was hands down the best meal we had in Iceland….quiche, sausage, soup, reindeer meatballs, fish stew, sourdough bread, and rhubarb cake were all phenomenal. We were stuffed when we left. Coffee was also nice as was the service and atmosphere. Came right at noon on a Monday and we were only the third table but by 12:30 the place was full!
We had such a good experience here. They had the best food that we had in days, the people were very welcoming and the food was extraordinary - we liked the soups - wow and everything. They were so happy to see us - very nice experience. Beautiful flowers, books and beautiful people.
This place stands out in Iceland! The architecture and building style are heavily influenced by Bavaria, making it a truly unique stop. If you're looking for a delicious meal, their all-you-can-eat afternoon buffet is a must-try. The staff keeps the dishes coming with a fantastic variety, and they're very accommodating to dietary restrictions. Don't forget to explore the building itself - it's a real treat for the eyes! Highly recommend!
The monastery is worth the visit. Loads of history and the staff give great anecdotes. The ruins below the building are worth seeing and all artifacts are also in English. There is plenty of parking and no fees charged for cars. The cafe under the building serves home made food created with local cuisine.
Great museum and super friendly staff! They gave us personalized explanations for every room :) Really interesting to learn something about the history of the place and Gunnar Gunarson. The café was great too, the food was really good and the price super reasonable for Iceland.
What a great place for lunch with a bit of history. The woman working was most pleasant and the food was fantastic. The soups, the reindeer sausage, lamb, the sides, all delicious. Definitely worth stopping in if you are in the area.
We went for lunch. A waitress warmly welcomed us and explained the lunch options. We chose the buffet lunch, and everything was delicious, especially while dining with a beautiful view. Overall, we had a pleasant and satisfying lunch. Highly recommended.

Remarkable place in a remarkable surrounding, good food (lamb soup) and homemade bread, interesting walk and talk with a really good guide and an interesting museum I’m happy with my visit and I encourage people to go there

The center is open year-round and offers a variety of amenities, including a cafe, gift shop, and restrooms.
Excellent visit to this beautiful visitors center. My 9-year-old got to work on his Bingo card and enjoyed looking for every item on it. The 2 young women working there were knowledgeable and a joy to speak with. We’ll practice our Icelandic and until we meet again—takk fyrir!
Nice visitor's center about this amazing glacier in Iceland. So explanatory material, and in English also. Gift shop.
A small but very resourceful visitor center. It has lot of information on elks, arctic foxes. A good way to spend 10-15 mins.
Interesting visitor centre telling about the local area. The displays are informative and well presented. There is also a cafe here but we didn't use it.
Very nice staff in fantastic surroundings and great to learn the history the kid and me and my wife enjoed coming there
Great center. Beautiful views of the valley. Very informative. Lots of displays of animals, and the nature of the valley and of Iceland. Nice clean w.c.

If you find yourself in the vicinity of Egilsstaðir, make sure to take a drive around the enchanting glacier-fed lake nearby. The roads are in good condition, offering a smooth journey around this natural wonder. A drive on each side of the lake is essential to fully appreciate the area's beauty. Along the way, you'll encounter a serene drive with minimal traffic, allowing you to soak in the sights at your leisure. Don't miss out on the Hallormsstaður forest for a touch of greenery, or the majestic waterfalls of Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss, which are sure to be the highlight of your trip. It's an experience brimming with natural splendor and not to be missed!
Don’t you follow Google map’s instructions or else you will enter on a private property when trying to drive to the lake… 😖
Nice little lake. We did not go around it so I will only review the first 1/4 and a nice little stop we took advantage of to have a little snack. It's pretty standard, but what stands out are the colors of the trees, from yellow to green. We went in October and the weather was nice enough to see the whole lake from the side.
Amazing and beautiful lake. The landscape is awesome with several hiking trails around to waterfalls and into the forest. Lake monster or not, it is definitely a place worth visiting.
Private property, google must have the wrong location
Wrong location. It is a private property. Go to Vok Bath instead.
Google has the location wrong so it took us to a private property...

Towering waterfall framed by massive, hexagonal basalt columns, reached by an uphill hiking path.
Slide 1 of 8
About 30 mins hiking from parking lot(charge 1000 isk), in the middle of path to another waterfall. We took the path at left side. Very nice valley view and stunning waterfall. We could see some cute sheep in September.
It’s a nice hike overall. The valley is in the sunny place, it was a surprise seeing the sun once we left the gloomy coast. Hike is popular, there are many people but parking is enough. Plus there is a food van nearby to grab a snack. Going up was windy, so always bring layers. It took us about 1,5 h to do the hike. But we were running going down.
A truly spectacular waterfall right along the ring road. I highly recommend going early in the morning to enjoy the place in peace. Being there alone lets you fully take in the natural beauty of the surroundings, with just the sound of the water and the views around you. It’s a magical stop if you time it right.
A stunning waterfall surrounded by dramatic basalt columns — one of the most unique sights in East Iceland. The walk to Litlanesfoss is part of the trail to Hengifoss, so you get to see two amazing waterfalls on the same hike. The trail is fairly steep in places, but well-marked. We took our time and spent about an hour here, enjoying the views and taking photos along the way. Litlanesfoss appears about halfway up the trail, framed by tall hexagonal basalt pillars that make it look like something from a fantasy movie. A perfect reward on the way to Hengifoss and a must-see stop for anyone who loves Iceland’s waterfalls and geology.
Spectacular waterfall characterized by the amazing dark basalt cliffs. This waterfall is somewhat mid-way between the parking area (costs the usual ISK1000 with good clean toilet facilities) and the remarkable Hengifoss waterfall which I highly recommend to visit as the panorama up there is spectacular to say the least. However the basalt cliffs of Litlanesfoss are definitely not to be missed reached after around 15-20mins climb from the car park!
Convenient to the free parking, this waterfall is a view on the hike up to the grand Hengifoss. You get a few different angles if you hike the trail around both sides of the canyon.
Only hiked up to the first waterfall. It’s an easy trail, but straight uphill. Took us I think an hour round trip? There’s a little bridge around the first waterfall so we just did that little loop. We ended up there during a little rain/snow storm, so it was very windy and the higher up we got, the windier it got and the rain turned to sleet then snow. The view was still unobstructed, but we weren’t up to hiking to the higher waterfall. There is a parking lot that had a handful of spaces when we got there, but there is a little sign saying to pay for parking. Though it was maybe $7ish USD. It had bathrooms as well. So if you’re willing to do the hike, I think the view is worth it.
Nice waterfall, and nice place to sit and see it. The lava outcomes are really beautiful, I recommend reading the tables!

This campsite was amazing, the kitchen and amenities were so good and the showers were so clean and luxury. There were also washing machines and dryers. We would definitely stay here again!
Nice camping with great facilities. A space to cook and eat inside with a kettle, a microwave and a burner. Some tables and chairs, a couch to relax. There is also couches, tables and sinks outside. I’d recommend to reserve and choose a spot online (the spots are numbered) and go explore. I’d recommend staying on gravel to have a flat spot. You’ll find the plan on the website. You also need to check in when you arrive by following the procedure in your emails. A large bathroom separated by gender with each 3 showers and 4 toilets. There are also a lot of washing machines/dryers. Over all a nice camping with a lot of spots and great facilities. Perfect to explore the surrounding area !
We didn’t stay here but went to the restaurant for brunch. The place is rustic and cozy with fascinating decoration. They have traditional Icelandic food and have some vegan options. The vegan pay is delicious. You can purchase a wide variety of souvenirs here as well. Restrooms are clean but there are only 2. The restaurant has a big parking lot and a bar.
Solid experience. We got the last spot with electricity showing up at 6:30pm. The bathrooms were large, clean, and showers were included in camping fee and they were private. The washer and dryers were nice to have at this point of our trip but each load cost $20us which was a lot especially since I don’t feel like anything actually got clean. Definitely a popular spot and it was kind of loud in the evening.
The best campground we’ve stayed at in Iceland so far! It’s very well-equipped, with spacious, clean, and modern dining areas, restrooms, and showers. It’s also the only campground we’ve seen with numbered, well-organized, and nicely spaced campsites. The price has shower included. The showers are spotless, and the water pressure is excellent—such a pleasure to stay here.
Convenient location. Huge campsite, although it looks more like a parling lot. Good for doing laundry (there are several washing machines and dryers). Small kitchen and cleaning area.
A nicely planned campsite with everything you will need for comfortable camping. Unlimited Showers are free unlike some other campsites around. There is laundry too but at a fee. Nearby are EV charging stations from E1 and even a tesla supercharger a km away. Saw some beautiful lights from here.
Very expensive camping site compared to the service you get! Super crowded and you have to park and camp squeezed. Kitchen/sitting area available in the reception but not clean. Lots of washing machines and dryers available but super expensive! Each laundry or dryer cycle costs 1250 isk including one washing pod liquid. Outdoor toilets and showers were disgusting, indoor ones were quite accessible but too far from tents. 3 sinks outside to do dishes.

Nice way to spend your afternoon. It's great priced And there are hot tubs at 38c-40c And outdoor sauna and slide for the kids and a warm swimming pool for laps. Clean and enjoyable
A very nice outdoor swimming pool to wash off the travel dust. The 25 metre pool has a nice temperature for swimming laps and the decently sized hot tubs are hot and hotter. If you want more heat then head to the sauna while the cold tub is great for those hiking aches. The soaking pool and the slides offer even more options.
On a 2 week visit to Iceland, when you miss the gym for working out and when you find a great one….that was how I felt walking into this well equipped, clean gym with a complete pool, including a huge water slide, sauna and hot water tubs. The gym itself was well-stocked with every kind of machine and weights. The gym is upstairs overlooking the gigantic pool that makes it a vantage point for people watching doing laps, floating or playing in the pool.
This is not a five star pool it is a ten star pool!!!!!!!!! This was the first pool I went to in Iceland and it outweighs my expectations. Nice slides, good 25m length pool, and quiet hot tub. (This review is my eight year old son)
Kids loved this place on a morning after camping nearby. Sauna, hot tub, cold plunge, kids pool, and adult pool plus water slides. Kids are 8 and 11 who enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend. The lifeguard was fantastic, older man with gray hair.
For 1500isk (about 10e) you get an access to the great gym + to the outer heated pools + sauna + cold bath ! Awesome local place to stop by for 2 hours :)
The pool is small but well-equipped: 2 hot tubs, a slide, a kiddie pool, a lane pool, and a sauna. It was very quiet when we visited. The changing rooms are simple but pleasant. We loved coming here!
Always a very nice people there, large showers and multiple pools outside with sauna and hot tubs😊 changing rooms have also a multiple lockers so you dont need to be worried about your things.

Great collection of art and design from around Iceland and very helpful☺☺☺
Thanks for your advise about the possibility to rent country ski in the lake hotel nearby. It open at 12:00 if the shop is closed at this time you can find the lady at the camping :)
It is a very small info desk inside a store. Everyone pretty much kept to themselves as we browsed the brouchers and store.
Lovely shop, varied gifts.
Clean place, very helpful staff

Accommodation in this place was a unique and unforgettable experience (in a good way). In the middle of nowhere, amazing views. Toilets were shared but clean, it was not a problem at all. We enjoyed amazing hot tube bath while watching snowy hills. Breakfast was very tasty, we especially enjoyed porridge with fruit. Staff was so nice and friendly, we felt like at home.
The rooms are cozy and, in true Icelandic style, you can enjoy a warm outdoor hot tubs. From this location, you can easily go on a waterfall hike. The place also offers a buffet-style dinner and a fantastic breakfast 😋
We stayed here for two nights because it was recommended in the reviews and we have no regrets! The view from here is amazing, especially because you can enjoy it from the natural hot spring. The rooms were cozy and the dinner was very good as well. There is a hike that starts from the Airbnb and it was maybe the best hike we did in all of Iceland. The host and staff are all very friendly too and make it into a great experience all together. If you're going to Iceland I would say this place is a must!
Very friendly staff, very comfortable beds and Perfect Location Right next to many impressive waterfalls and mountains. Obviously the hot Pools are a delight!
Good to know: we stayed the night in our camper and had our own food (the diner smelled amazing tho!) This is truely a wonderful place, really a hidden gem 💎. It’s a 30 minute drive from Hengifoss, the roads are absolutely fine to get there. They have two natural pools, with the perfect temperature, and there are shower facilities. The perfect place to see the aurora as there is no light polution. They recommended a hike which starts at the guest house of 7 km and it blew us away! You can also just chill in the lobby and get yourselves some coffee or tea. The people of the guest house were very relaxed and friendly.
Scenic hikes ✅ Hot springs ✅ Fresh and clean toilets/showers ✅ This was an amazing camping spot I recommend to all who pass by!! It’s easy to reach since the roads are mainly asphalted :) The cherry on top was the amazing staff!! Adam and Kroummi (spelling?) really took the stay from great to wonderful (give them a pay raise). If you love quiet camping spots like Þakgil (also highly recommended) outside of Vik then this is the right place 🙏🏽❤️
Amazing spot where to start or finish your trip to/from inland. For a fee you can stay with your car on the parking and use showers and hot springs. Very helpful and kind staff.
be carefull with the dinner. Expensive for low quality, even if the dinner can be digested! The place and hot spring are fabulous !

Must see, especially on a rainy day. We loved the old tools, the house and reindeer exhibition. Hope to see a reindeer in real life now.
Incredible museum of Icelandic history. All objects, include the turf house, are original. The museum is small but was so much stuff to see and read about!! The receptionist was super kind and lovely. It as a bathroom and a library. I truly recommend the visit to this museum!!
If you are in Eastern Region, this museum is a must. We had the fortune of visiting it on a very special day with traditional music and singing, which helped us for an even better immersion. East Iceland Heritage Museum offers something for any museum lover: its main focus is, as its name reads, Icelandic cultural heritage, with a rich collection of artifacts and documents gathered around a traditional Icelandic home and the office of an important forest engineer. They have managed to find a perfect balance of lighting, information and objects that create a vivid experience. There are two other main sections in the museum: one dedicated to archeological sites of the region, with a special focus on the fascinating history of the remains of a mysterious foreign noble woman. The other part shares the history and evolution of the reindeer population since its introduction from Norway back in XVIII century. Scientific data by late reindeer population expert Skarphéðinn G. Þórisson and further information about hunting and species characteristics are in display for those interested in this animal.
A small but interesting museum about the life in Iceland and the hunt for deers. Many pictures and items plus a replica of an original old house. Very informative. Staff was very friendly and opened up for us. Liked it.
This is a relatively small museum with displays on Icelandic culture and a separate section on reindeer. Great for children as it is not so large as to loose their attention. Being in a small town they do not get a lot of visitors, so the staff are very happy and accommodating when tourists stop in. Local schools take trips there which would be the one time it gets busy. Egilsstaðir is on highway 1, so if you are driving by it is worth the short detour. As a woodworker I loved the old wooden lathe.
A very impressive museum, if you want to understand how people lived and survived in Iceland before the modern era. This is a real 'up close and personal' museum with historical items from the local community on display. Highly recommended!
This museum shows the lives of Icelanders back then and makes you realize how tough it has been for them. I came out of this museum feeling humbled! Please, do not touch the objects! 🙏 We saw some visitors were touching them very roughly despite the “do not touch” signs.
Very interesting to learn of Icelandic culture before European influence. Also a nice exhibition on reindeers. Entry fee is 1500ISK.

We attempted to go here today (in a 4x4) and unfortunately had to turn back because we could no longer see the road and it was snow covered. Since it was almost sunset, we turned back to not risk coming back that way in the dark, but waterfall must have been looking really good with all the new snow! Just a heads up if anyone is looking to go there this week - definitely have the right car and try go during the day and when the weather report is good.
It's q gravel road not for a newbie driver. In summer you don't need 4x4, the road is well-maintained, no stones or debris on it. Just drive carefully. The views are unforgetable! There are few wild parking lots nearby, they provide different view. If you hike up, be carefull not to loose the trail, it's not marked at all. Take your drone with you.
This place is exactly as described. Be advised that the road to them is not so easy, you have to be careful. It is approx. 20km of gravel road, but well maintained. We were alone at the premises which really allowed to experience the calmness and power. You have to go through water and springs to climb the waterfall, but it is worth it!
One of my favorite places on Iceland. It was absolutely breathtaking and looked a bit somehow like Rivendell from The Lord of the Rings.
What a road to get there! It's an adventurous and also not very short detour, but the views are great (not only on Klifbrekku waterfall, but plenty of other waterfalls, and the fjord). High possibility of being there the only person/group.
I visited Klifbrekkufossar in mid-August, and it’s a moment I will never forget. As I arrived, the skies began to clear and the sun broke through, while in the distance over the fjord a soft rain was falling. Then, as if nature wanted to show its full magic, a rainbow appeared – framing the scene like a gateway to another world. For a moment, I truly felt as though I had stepped into Narnia. The descent towards the waterfall is nothing short of enchanting. Each step reveals more of its cascading beauty, surrounded by lush green slopes and the timeless stillness of the Eastfjords. The air was fresh, the silence profound, broken only by the gentle rush of water. Standing there, I felt both peace and awe – a deep respect for the raw power and delicate grace of Icelandic nature. Klifbrekkufossar is not just a place to see; it is a place to feel, to breathe in, and to carry with you long after you leave.
Nice drive out there! Be sure you got AWD. It was really nice to continue driving this road along the fjord!
This is possibly our favorite waterfall in all of Iceland. It took some effort to get there (through fog and steep mountain passes) but it was all worth it.

Good place for a short walk during winter, local use it to practice skiing.
Makes for a great running trail! One lap of the main loop is around 2 miles (3.2 km). The trail is mostly soft mulch, with a few short gravel sections. If you start counterclockwise, there are 4 big uphills at the very beginning, then the rest of the lap is relatively easy with gentler ups and downs.
Amazing walk. Recommend you try it out.

Fantastic walk. 8km easy to moderate yellow loop takes you past multiple beautiful waterfalls. No scrambling or large elevation changes. Paved roads most of the way until the turnoff to the parking lot and easily accessible by small, non-4WD cars. Some of the best waterfalls I saw in Iceland. Starts and ends at a lodge with food and hot tub access (not free but cheap).
Fun hike with lots of waterfalls and vistas. Took us about 2 hours taking the red/yellow way signs and then yellow. Way signs are difficult to see at points since they’re only about 3-feet tall and since you’ll go off trail when it gets incredibly wet at some parts (there are a bunch of boardwalks for the beginning/end, depending on which way you go). Bring Gore-tex boots for the wet parts. Sadly, didn’t find the hot springs along the trail but there’s one accessible near the hostel.
From the parking lot, head towards one of the sets of steps going over the fence and look for the sticks with red tops as mentioned. If you start heading south first you’ll hit the falls towards the end of your hike. I would not describe this as a flat hike as others say, there’s an elevation change of almost 700 feet with some uneven terrain and some steep sections. Be sure to bring waterproof footwear as the path can be boggy in spots. Amazing vistas and waterfalls, 10/10, would recommend.
Nice hike with 5 waterfalls. The hike is easy and just under 8 km. It was very muddy when we were there but it didnt ruin the fun. We did it in 2 hours including photos. The hike is a round.
Amazing 8 km hike! It took us about 2 and a half hours to do this big loop. We saw LOTS of waterfalls and a constant beautiful view of the mountains, and rivers. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it was VERY muddy at some parts. But this might be because we did the hike after rain. Otherwise it’s 5 stars for me. But, just in case, make sure you have good shoes on. Enjoy!
We spent a leisurely morning on this fantastic walk. There are two impressive falls (Faxi and Kirkjufoss) on the main river (a substantial river from the glacier), which you follow for about 3km. For about another 3 km you follow a smaller river that has two smaller but lovely falls. The smaller river passes Laugerfell where the walk starts and finishes. If you follow the river upstream past Laugerfell you will see a further series of 4 falls which can easily be done in an hour. And after the walk you can soak in the amazing hot pools. Laugerfell is in a fantastic and remote part of the country about 20mins drive from Hengifoss. Because the 910 leads to a huge hydroelectric dam, the road is excellent- very unusual in the highlands. If you’re from the UK, Ben Fogle did an episode of Lives In The Wild just a few miles down river from Faxi.
Fantastic 8km (5mile) hike! Its a big loop and you get to see around 8 waterfalls. They say you only see 5, but thats just because Iceland has so many waterfalls they prolly dont even count the smaller ones. Very pretty, not crowded, highly recommend. There is also a hot spring right in the parking lot. Looked very relaxing! Pro Tip: the signs say follow the yellow markers to stay on trail. The yellow paint has worn off and now only the red tip shows, so follow the red tips. The green tip markers is an alternative path down a valley (+8km) which we did not do.
What a great experience !! We felt alone for most of the hike !! Quite a remote place … it took us 3h to complete, but we made lots of photo stops 😊 I definitely recommend this hike !!
