Had a super fun time here with the kids. English heritage had family activities on. The Silly History Boys did a great performance, funny quiz and kids battle which went down very well with my children (9yrs and 11yrs). The castle is a ruins and interesting to walk around.
An excellent ruin of a castle. We were lucky enough to have birds of prey showing as we arrived. Wonderful to see and hear about the birds. The is parking at the castle. You have to pay £3.50 for parking unless you are a national trust member. This is normal for national trust sites. There were toilets in the car park but they are not looked after the best. Lots of cobwebs and dirt and no soap in the toilets. It normally shuts at 5 during the summer months but the staff were very much rushing to shut up from half 4. This is the reason for the 4 star review the actual castle was 5 star. Plenty of areas to explore and learn about. Lots of information boards and voice boards around the site. The main building was amazing with lots of rooms and stairs to explore. The gift shop was small, however there was a tent which had more things in but this shut very early and we were not able to look around before we left. We do like to take souvenirs away with the sites name on.
Nice castle to visit especially if your part of the English Heritage as its free parking and entry. Quite alot of the castle remaining so plenty to look around. Also nice to walk down into the village with cafes and a few shops to visit. Overall well worth a visit.
Second visit in a decade visiting Warkworth Castle, and equally enjoyable this second time. Warkworth Castle is partly a ruins. But its main building (the Great Tower) has three floors of enclosed space. Definitely set aside time for the Great Tower to appreciate the variety of rooms, many passageways, several stairways, and the great views from windows. And, like me, you might also need some time trying to find your companions in the building! The signage has good info about several rooms/work areas. It also engages visitors with fictional dialogues about daily life in the Great Tower The castle’s elevated position and the Great Tower’s height provide excellent views of the surrounding area from several windows. The large outdoor lawn within the fortress between entrance and Great Fortress offers plenty of area for kids (and adults) to romp around. Parking (on lawn) for about 60 cars (my estimate). Visited in late May 2025
An absolute gem of a town! So much history too. Castle ruins, Hermitage built in a cave across the river with carved alters inside, Acessed by a small boat. Book your boat ticket at the castle where Parking all day is only £3.50. Local church with a sad story. Glorious river walks. Dog friendly pub called Masons.
I adore this castle - every time I go to Northumberland, I come here. It is an English heritage managed castle, it has a large carpark and has some accessible areas for anyone with mobility issues but the keep has stairs and no wheelchair access. It has some fantastic stone masonry work and some hidden markings - original angel of the north 😏 The staff are always welcoming and friendly and full of knowledge. Visit and enjoy this stunning castle for its ruined beauty 🥰
Surprisingly good. Lots to explore and great views too. Definitely worth a visit - a walk along the River Coquet is recommended as well.
Great place to visit, dog friendly in all areas, the main part of the castle was huge although a ruin was great to explore, as a child you could have a fab game of hide and seek, there is a free audio guide which tells you about the history of the castle while you explore

Car park is free which is great and public toilets available. Walk down through the dunes to the beach which is beautiful! It's dog friendly, gorgeous views up to Alnmouth and you can walk for miles, will definitely go back.
Very quiet and good located car park. just a few minutes walk to the sea. Toilets are a bit old, but okay. Very nice view and a bench to sit up on the hill and look at the sea.
A free car park with toilets and a lovely seafood van, gives access to the dunes and beach. The beach is dog friendly almost yesterday round I believe
Free parking and it’s near to Warwick beach and there was plenty of space when we went there. Beach is really beautiful and wide, took us few minutes to walk to the beach. It’s near to amble and amble is a small town famous for active fishing harbour village.
It's took away from the village close to a picnic, toilets and caravan site. There is a short walk to the a beach that stretches about six miles between Amble and Alnmouth, flanked by the rivers Coquet and Aln. A huge beach with few people. Typical Northumberland!
Free car park with toilets, short walk to soft sand
Unusually a free car park just a few minutes walk from the beach. Lots of parking space available here. Plus public toilets.
Great beach to stop off and stretch your legs a doggi favourit this place..

Great piece of hidden history. There can be very few similar sites in the UK. Even gets an entry into Simon Jenkins book: "England's Thousand Best Houses."
Boats only available on Sundays and Mondays at the moment (May) so can't see much from the other side of the river.
Marvellously evocative place. Much more detailed and complete than the initial "grotto in the cliffside" might suggest. Limited boat crossings, and affected by both season add weather, so check beforehand. The path from the castle, or from the bottom of the village, is easy enough, but the hermitage itself isn't exactly accessible, especially at low water level.
It was a lovely walk down from the castle and a tranquil place to visit. Not really suitable for people with major mobility issues due to the steep hill, kissing gate and large steps into and out of the boat. You need to book your tickets and time slot at the main castle site. 3 generations enjoyed the visit.
After a beautiful short walk along the river you're taken across in a small boat. Interesting hidden gem !! Make sure you book and pay at Warkworth castle. Don't just turn up at the crossing site !
Summer 2025 The Hermitage is open Sundays and Mondays 11am to 4pm. If a high tide is due then the operating hours may vary, check the English Heritage website for details. You must purchase tickets at the Castle prior to your visit as there are limited places on the boat, which goes every half an hour.
What a magical place. Steve the guide was so informative and amusing, and taught us so much. You must prebook at the castle as the boat over the river only holds 6.
A fascinating addition to the Warkworth Castle experience. It is (at time of writing) only open Sundays and Mondays. The ferryman was very polite and had already departed a couple of minutes earlier than scheduled, so kindly came back for me when I arrived in the nick of time. Thus I got a private crossing! I rather suspect this is Britain's most obscure transport service, actually. Once we were all assembled on the far shore, we had a 10min tour before being left for a few more minutes to explore by ourselves. There are a few hidden things which you will learn about, and it didn't feel rushed despite the short amount of time. As others have said, it could become expensive on its own. Don't forget English Heritage membership can be quite good value in this part of the country, and sometimes you can get it half price with deals with popular supermarket points schemes.

Wonderful paintings especially the landscape ones of Northumberland, very friendly staff, always a special place to visit
This gallery always used to be a must visit for me whenever I was in Northumberland. Sadly though I have to agree with a post someone submitted re the lack of ceramics etc. I have bought some lovely quirky pieces over the years as well as a number of framed prints. The closure of the back room & limited opening times etc has been such a shame. Sorry, but it's just not the same.
Having visited this gallery many times over the years, disappointed to find it has really scaled back on the variety of items for sale. The back room is closed and most of the shelving from middle room gone. Mostly selling paintings and jewellery now. Very little ceramic work, no wooden or glass items. What a shame.
Snooty assistant who rolled eyes and commented under her breath when my 10yr old son happened to touch a woollen scarf. Due to her ill manners, she managed to do herself and the shop out of a purchase of earrings my wife had seen. If you don’t want people to touch things put them behind glass or simply comment politely.
Lovely gallery with some great pieces. Having visited periodically over the past few years I notice that the offer is very much the same. Some variety would be great.
Very interesting and varied gallery with paintings by owner and daughter and others plus range of ceramics, jewelry and other gifts. Very well presented by friendly approachable staff
Lovely gallery in Warkworth. Paintings/prints, pottery and jewellery. 10 month's interest free option for original pieces. Well worth a visit.
Delightful little gallery, gorgeous art and some lovely gifts and jewellery on sale too. Friendly welcome as well.

Our day begins at Walkmill Campsite. We walk to Warkworth Castle to explore the ruins, and from there to enjoy the vast beach. It's unsurprising that we are hungry and thirsty by now, so we try to find some refreshments. After visiting another well known restaurant, which is very busy, we stumble upon Cabosse. The staff member is attentive and friendly, offering to leave the tea bags in our drinks and also to cut our pastry in half (because we are sharing). We were planning to ask for both of these so we're amazed and surprised and pleased that she anticipated the request. Needless to say, the tea and pastry were delicious. If you're visiting Warkworth, I would recommend you drop by. P.S. The shop actually specialises in chocolate but we didn't have any
Beautiful little shop in Warkworth. Such a lovely lady welcoming myself and Dog Duke into shop and hubby whom had met earlier . Such a lovely place and contents to allow a dog with such warmth. Our dog also got injured and met later outside shop and offered bandage and medicine . What a delight to have in a beautiful town. I know Ripon and Harrogate would appreciate such a lovely individual shop and lovely lady. Appreciate what you have Warkworth just home now enjoying delicious chocolates
Nestled in the heart of Warkworth, this shop is a haven for all chocolate enthusiasts. I discovered this place whilst on holiday in the area last year. Returning to holiday in the area this week, I drove to Northumbria and headed straight to Cabosse! I was warmly welcomed by the owner who radiates warmth and kindness. There is a selection of handmade chocolates, souvenirs and gifts suitable for all occasions. Don’t forget to visit the rear of the shop too! The star of the show for me is the hot chocolate. I declared it the ‘best in the world’ last year and can confirm the quality is still exceptional. My taste buds danced with joy whilst sipping the thick comforting drink. I’ve been here three days and have been in daily. If I lived here, I’d officially be an addict of Cabosse hot chocolate. Do not miss this place if you’re ever in the area. Also Dog friendly.
If you want chocolates that are truly delicious and not overly sweet nor with artificial flavours, then this is where you should go. Fabulous shop with friendly staff.
Amazing hot chocolate, the chocliatist! hot chocolate I've ever had, amazing...also had a chocolate almond croissant and chocolate ganache tarte. If you like chocolate you will love Cabosse
Awful place, assistant was very snooty, said wasnt a tea shop then asked us if we wanted tea. We asked for black tea/ english breakfast with milk, which really wasnt understood. She then rolled her eyes at another customer. We accepted the tea and paid, but when we opened it, we couldnt drink it, white milky water i wouldnt give a dog! Dont bother going into this place, they take your money and look at you like your dirt on their shoe!
Immense. Wonderful atmosphere and just incredible patisserie. Service can be a little slow, so it feels very French. But honestly, it's such a nice place to be I didn't mind at all. No phone signal inside the cafe or WiFi. Was forced to talk to my wife. I had savoury croissant (brie cheese melted) with an apricot chutney. With petit fours with coffee.
Small selection when we went but all very delicious. Lovely chocolates too!

Had an overnight stop here last Friday whilst walking the Northumberland coast path. The landlord was welcoming and friendly, the room was spotless and comfortable, and as we decided to eat in the pub that evening we sampled both the vegan and non vegan menus. Food was delicious and well priced for what it was. Will definitely return next time we're in The area
I stayed one night while walking St Oswald's trail. Good price for a fair sized room including a good breakfast. 5 minutes walk downhill from Northumberland's best castle. Very friendly staff. Had scampi for dinner with chips and mushy peas. Was really nice. Would definitely come back.
Food is always delicious every time we visit. So reasonably priced and the staff are always lovely with a warm welcome. Sunday carverys are absolutely delicious. Even the puppy enjoyed himself getting spoiled off the staff members.
The hermitage Inn was an amazing pub!! The food was delicious! They also had homemade chips that were amazing!!! The atmosphere was amazing with the lights and the TV on and everyone laughing and talking and the service wow! The workers WERE the atmosphere! They were so friendly and funny to talk to! Me and my family had such a good time! DEFINITELY recommend 💗
After visiting Warkworth Castle, there’s not muck to see or do in Warkworth and after walking down the main street, I had given up and was about to head home when I found this pub with a sign in the window saying they welcome “muddy paws”. So on I went with my little doggy Taylor Swift the Westie who sat at my feet as I waited for my scampi and chips. It did take quite a while and I was just about to ask had they forgotten about me when the food arrived and it was hearty and delicious. Tis a rare jewel, a food establishment that accepts doggies.
Fantastic carvery Friendly staff Great service Lovely jacket potato and salad Dog friendly too Went twice as food was so good
We’ve been a couple of times now and it’s always such a great experience. The guy behind the bar is incredibly friendly and welcoming. But what really blew us away this time was the food. We only had the cheese scones and the cheese & bacon scones, but oh my god – they were absolutely outstanding. Fresh, warm, packed with flavour, and genuinely some of the best we’ve ever tasted.
What a wonderful village pub. Could not fault anything, if I was looking to do so. Staff, so friendly, food top notch. The massive Yorkshire pudding with pulled beef and mash and veg in it.

A lovely setting for this interesting Norman Church with the River Coquet bordering the graveyard behind the Church. The South Aisle was added in the 15th Century by the Percy's with the colonnade of pillars built on the foundations of the original Norman wall. The Church has the longest Norman Nave in Northumberland Look out for the well preseved Knights Tomb (c1330) in the Chantry.
It's nice little church. I was lucky today there was a performance by a ukrainien lady she sang a couple of song & what a beautiful voice. She sang a ukrainien song & one english, her voice was so clear & althought she had problem with her microphone her voice just rang out. Lovely
A really nice church with some classic historical architecture. A pleasant spot worth visiting when exploring the area.
Dog friendly very well maintained church
This church lies at the bottom of the hill towards the river from the castle. It's something to add to an exploration of the little town. The church is also close to the footpath that follows the river.
This is a lovely church. Set in a substantial, well kept and pleasant churchyard and located at the top of the River Coquet’s oxbow peninsula, St Lawrence’s is a “must see” - inside and out - on a visit to Warkworth. The village is, of course, dominated by its castle, but the sense of history which St Lawrence Church embodies exceeds, I think, its much larger and bolder neighbour. The Norman church, which was built in the 12th century, consisted of the chancel and very long nave, which, in the 15th century was opened on the south side with the construction of a line of pillars and the south aisle. The tower and spire were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The long and high Norman nave, now aisle, the later line of pillars, the south aisle and the Norman chancel are each very impressive features of St Lawrence Church. Although they are discrete, there is no sense of disunity in the whole. The pious pelican makes a modest, but distinctive appearance on a lectern. There is a stone effigy of a knight, to the left of the main door on entry. Most people will visit Warkworth by car, but it's worth pointing out that there are good bus links with Newcastle, Morpeth, Ashington and Alnwick.
After our eats we strolled down towards the church, once inside it was amazing memorials for our fallen heroes in ww1 and ww2 where very interesting, getting lost in your own thoughts while sitting looking towards stain glass window, a must see visit after the castle 😊

Played a Friendly at Warkworth today course was in Great Condition .Greens spot on Thanks to all the staff for the lovely food and our hosts from Warkworth Seniors Section. Matthew Stewart Club Secretary. Newbiggin Golf Club.
BE VERY VERY AWARE I have been walking back along the edge of the golf course towards Warkworth Dunes car park for many years without any mishap. Sadly, this morning at 9.40 hrs, walking on the pedestrian track leading back to the Warkworth Dunes car park with my friend and my dog and keeping well within the pedestrian pathway, a golf ball came out of what appeared to be nowhere and hit my friend in her stomach, the force of which could have been fatal had it been her head or heart. We saw the ball which had been hit from the first tee by a golfer who either should be wearing glasses or is new to the game. Not only did he fail to appreciate how dangerous his shot was but his ball, after hitting my friend, fell squarely in the pedestrian pathway. We heard him say to his golf buddie - "what do I do now, she picked it up!!!!" Standing on the first tee looking towards the caravan park, you have to be blind not to see walkers coming along the path. BE AWARE.
A nice 9 hole links with double tees to make it 18 holes. Course was in excellent condition and the greens outstanding. Friendly welcome by members and Alice behind the bar. We visited from Whitley Bay (approximately 1hour away) and it was worth the journey. A must play if in the area!
We spend most of our weekends in Warkworth and called into the Golf Club on Saturday for a drink. Husband couldn't resist ordering a hot roast pork sandwich (as well as a small bowl of chilli chips) and declared that it was the best roast pork (and crackling) he'd ever tasted. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming with the bonus of lovely views. We will definitely be calling in more often and hoping that these sandwiches are on the menu again very soon!
Very much enjoyed our round of Golf at Warkworth especially the stunning views
Class course a must okay course for proper golfers great views
A tremendous little links course, which my brother and I greatly enjoyed playing recently whilst staying in the area. Highly recommended 👍⛳
Fabulous place to stop by for lunch and a drink, sandwich with a generous salad and fries plus a pint for less than a tenner😳🤤 Great place for those "Bargain Brits"🤗 and what views from the club house of the glorious North sea and beach👀👍🥳
