Beautiful Italian hilltop village. Certainly worth the effort to visit this area. Like a mini Alpine region,
This was amazing! Can’t recommend this enough, you ‘fly’ across the ravine, spectacular views, such an exhilarating experience (and I don’t even like heights!) The staff were so kind and helpful, organising Go Pro (€20) and there were photos too (€8) and they even took some on my phone before we ‘took off’! (take cash as it’s easier for the team)
Don’t miss this thrill! What a rush! Transform yourself to Superman for a couple of minutes with incredible views! Highly recommend. A bit of a language barrier if you don’t speak Italian, but they tried very hard!
Amazing zipline, really does feel like flying! You have to go to the ticket office in town first so go here rather than the other locations which are the launch sites. Very steep path up to the launch site although there's a bus that takes you most of the way. Price is very reasonable.
Unforgettable experience practiced several times. Really breathtaking .. everything is located in an incredibly small but breathtaking village. I recommend everyone even a visit to the place !!!
The zip line experience was great. The village itself is beautiful I do recommend this activity, however the ladies at the ticket zip line reception was incredibly rude. No good communication and rubbish customer service. We came 2 hours early to the check-inn as we was already in the area because we had taken part in another activity. We wanted to see if there was availability for another ticket. Anyone with common sense would know that the reason we went early to the check-inn was because if we went later we would risk there being no tickets left. They made us wait several minutes outside with no updates and told us we had to come back at the time of our booking to see if there was any spare tickets which is quite stupid as if we came later we would risk others taking any tickets that were left. As we was still waiting outside and being rudely spoken to they allowed a family of 3 with no tickets to go in before us even though we was there before them. At this point we went back in and told them this was ridiculous and unacceptable in which case one of the women decided to argue with us that we was wrong for coming early to get an extra ticket and told us that if we wanted to come 2 hours in advance for a spare ticket we might aswell have come a whole day before?! And that “you should just have booked it online”. Who is she to tell me how to book my tickets. In fact we did try to book another last minute ticket however the site kept crashing and if booking tickets online was the case then she could have told the family of 3 to also book online. What a cheeky cheeky women speaking to customers in such a way.
This was so much fun and could not have been more beautiful. We appreciated the relaxed pace and even enjoyed the 25min hike to the first zipline.
Amazing experience! We truly recommed this flight! The stuff is very kind and highly professional. After you buy your flight online, you come to the Castelmezzano village to the ticket office - Biglietteria. You have to meet the weight requirements, so they measure your weight. Then you go to the parking place in front of tourist info point and wait for the shuttle bus. Bus takes you as high as the road goes, then you walk about 20 minutes further high the path to the Castelmezzano starting station. You fly to the other hill, near Pietrapertosa. Other bus takes you to Pietrapertosa and after cca 10 minutes walk you reach another starting point and you fly back to Castelmezzano. All this is included in price you pay when you book the flight. Pictures from your flight can be purchased after first flight and you can rent GoPro camera at the first starting point. After both flights you get memory card with videos from both of your flights. We had 2x couple flights with our childrens 13 and 10 years old, it was fantastic, the stuff works precisely with all safety precautions. Once more many thanks, when in Basilicata, we will come back again!!! 👍👍👍😉

Each stone is strategically placed to align with the natural breaks and viewpoints along the trail: Stone 1: The Departure Location: Near the starting point in Castelmezzano. Narrative: Vito, a young shepherd, leaves his village to seek a better future. Encouraged by his dreams and the words of a mysterious elder, he sets off on a journey. Stone 2: The Encounter Location: A short distance along the trail. Narrative: Vito meets a wise old woman who gives him advice and a magical object to help him on his journey. She tells him to follow the path and heed the signs along the way. Stone 3: The Challenge Location: As the trail starts to ascend. Narrative: Vito faces his first major challenge, encountering a fierce animal. Using the wisdom and courage instilled in him, he overcomes the obstacle and continues his journey. Stone 4: The Vision Location: At a scenic viewpoint along the trail. Narrative: Vito experiences a vision that reveals insights about his past and future. This vision strengthens his resolve and guides him further along his path. Stone 5: The Temptation Location: Midway through the trail, in a serene spot. Narrative: Vito encounters a beautiful but deceptive entity that tries to lead him astray. Remembering the old woman's advice, he resists the temptation and stays true to his path. Stone 6: The Revelation Location: As the trail begins to descend toward Pietrapertosa. Narrative: Vito discovers a hidden truth about his heritage and destiny. This revelation provides him with the clarity and purpose needed to complete his journey. Stone 7: The Return Location: Near the end of the trail, approaching Pietrapertosa. Narrative: Vito returns to his village with newfound wisdom and strength. He is celebrated as a hero, and his journey inspires others to seek their own paths. The Seven Stones is a unique blend of physical activity and storytelling, offering a rich, immersive experience that connects hikers with the history, culture, and natural beauty of the region. The inscriptions are usually in Italian, so having a translation app or guidebook can enhance the experience for non-Italian speakers.
We took the track from the bottom of the village Pietrapertosa to Castelmazzone one way took 1 hour on a slow walk . The track has been well constructed , it is a steep uphill walk coming back . You will need to be fit to do this track Great views of the valleys
It may have just been because we did this walk in the rain but we were fairly unimpressed. The most irritating thing was the loud music that plays at every stop of the way on the walk - it’s meant to tell a story of witches but it completely ruins the tranquility of the walk. The views are okay but nothing you wouldn’t get by looking out from either town. It was also quite tricky to walk on the paving stones going downhill and the boulders on the Castelmezzano side. I wouldn’t recommend for anyone not very mobile.
Map of 2 Via Ferrata and The path of the 7 Stones. Path is 1 hr to Pietrapertosa and 1 hr back. The 2 nepalese bridges are NOT on the Path...
Nice hike, I would say moderate difficulty. We did it with our kids (6 and 4 years old) and we took our time. We crossed path with people who got lost with their bikes, not recommended, they must have had a hard time climbing the other side !
Highly recommended but only if you expand from the path of the seven stones which is a lot more than just that - it is part of a bigger area of trails which would satisfy any hobby hiker. Do not just do the slightly irritating (due to the horrible loudspeaker noises) and short walk of the stones but rather go and explore the access trails to the via ferratas on both side of the river. There is a lot of additional beautiful hiking and to the left you can easily do a bit of the Via Ferata without gear but of course be careful. On the other side you can easily get to the Nepalese Bridge which is easy to cross with or without gear - again be responsible. Once you have walked up on the other side at Pietrapertosa have lunch and relax as it is a steep ascent. Then walk to the left of the town up to the castle - just keep going up and you will be rewarded with amazing views. Then pass down to the flight of angels very close by and take the path to the right all the way down to the river. This means that you have done a full loop and much nicer than going back down the same way - enjoy!
It was hard work to get to the other side but it was worth it. The path is marked clearly. There are several surprises along the way. It's a shame there's no bus to take you back. We paid 70€ to someone to take us back.
Almost no one writes this in the comments, but I'll tell you. My wife and I have walked this path in both directions. REMEMBER! The path along the seven stones trail must necessarily begin with Pietropetros. From the beginning of the trail to the stone bridge over the stream there is a long, sometimes very steep descent. The path is laid with stone paving stones. We walked in the most ordinary light sneakers and sneakers. We didn't experience any problems. After the stream and vecchio mulino, the trail goes up over the rocks to Castelmezzano. But this rise is not comparable to the rise towards Pietro. You won't even notice it, it's like climbing the stairs to the 9th floor. You won't get tired. With all that, if you move from Pietrapertosa towards Castelmezzano, you will still take pictures and make videos. Although to admit there is nothing particularly interesting. All the stones are talking. But if you start the way from Castelmezzano towards Pietrapertosa, you will quickly and carefully descend over the rocks to the stream, and then you will climb up for a long time sweating. Taking pictures at this moment will be extremely uninteresting. You will want to drink and take a breath. It's not fun at all. Pietrapertosa has a toilet where you can wash and dry yourself with paper towels. 40min.

Amazing view, not so turistic, good cafes, you will love it
We visited in January, out of season so it is fine that the place was not open. It was a nice hike although the view from the top (without doing the steps because they were closed) was not a good one. The best view in Castelmezzano was from Piazze Emilio Caizzo and I recommend going there.
We really wanted to visit and walk the steps, but we had difficulty finding our way to the steps from the village side, we saw people up there but couldn't find signage showing us how to get there! Plenty of signage to the zip line and the toboggan ride however!
Amazing place Definitely recommended
What a magic place this is!!

The town is located in a scenic position between the rocks of the Lucanian Dolomites, parking is €1 hour, €7 per day. It does not seem to be “camper friendly”, the only parking I saw indicated, dedicated to them, I think is private €2 per hour €20 all day, the others are car-sized. There are no supermarkets of the large national chains on site, the last ones you will find along the road are in Matera and Potenza for others you have to make detours of kilometers.

One of the spires is particularly noteworthy, with its path carved into the rock. This is the Norman Stairway, a staircase carved from stone and used by the Normans to spot enemies from above. To climb it, you need a guide and special equipment, as it's a bit dangerous to go without. (Original) Con Guida.

It was really a great workout for me and the kids (11, 15). We started early (6 am) since it was mid July and temp reaches 30 around noon. Most of the route was in shade. Took us 3.5 h the full Salemm circle: we had accommodations in Castelmezzano itself so we started by foot toward the path of 7 stone starting point. The route took us up the mountain until we ended just above the village. The via ferrata is not too hard but very exposed.
(Translated by Google) Via ferrata that develops in several phases, with different escape routes. I would not recommend it to those who are new to this discipline as there are very exposed and completely vertical sections, especially in the final section, which also has the holds very distant from each other. Also pay attention to very loose and poorly tensioned cables, which make the balance precarious in many points. In general, however, a beautiful via ferrata, which for the most part overlooks the Lucanian Dolomites and the town of Castelmezzano. The final stretch, although the most difficult, also offers the most beautiful view, especially if you are lucky enough to get the right sun between the canyon walls.

A wonderful place to stay for anyone looking to explore the region. Great rooms, view and amazing food for a low price. Highly reccomended!
For a relaxing weekend we, me and my spouse, were looking for a calm and authentic place surrounded by woods and charming yet not overcrouded spots and towns to visit, and that's basically what we got. Grotta dell'eremita is a small village in the lucanian country and a family farm where the familiar side is maybe a lil prevalent on the need of being good hosts, when you have guests that are not your family. I mean, feeling home is important when you travel, but when you got the feeling that you are in someone else's home, that can be disappointing. I'd say that taking much care of the common spaces surrounding the rooms would not be a bad idea, to avoid a general impression of sloppiness that you could feel around you (an old and rusty tractor just beside one of the access to the rooms area, cars parked everywhere, people screaming at debatable volumes and times talking of daily business problems just down your balcony). With a few attention to details, this place, without changing its autenticity, could really become a sort of lost bucolic paradise, qnd it's a pity not to have had the chance to live it at its highest potential. For the rest, the family and workers were warm and always available and dinners were good yet simple. Just a final remark: what I espect in an agriturismo is a taste of autenticy even in food, and was disappointing to have a tradtional antipasto, where the most of the products served were basically products that you would find in any Italian supermarket. More attention to details, would represent an actual improvement, that would eventually justify the fact that, at the end of the sotry, the staying in a place which is far from everything in the heart of a non-turistic place, though not costly, could not even be deined as cheap.
Phenomenal experience in the restaurant. We had an all inclusive meal at 30€ per person including wine. All locally sourced ingredients and incredible service. I would give 10 stars if possible. Grazie
I am never coming back to this place. The owner was really really inappropriate towards me. He groped me many times, tried to kiss me, kissing me on my cheeks many times, pinching my cheek and arm and touching my shoulder constantly. He did the same to my friend, but not nearly as many times. We are two female backpackers, who are respectively 22 and 23 years old, and I would never come here if i am a female backpacker, a young female or a female alone. We did not feel safe. The owner is about 55-60 years old. His actions went far over our limits, so i couldnt handle it in the end, and ended up sitting and crying in front of the reception. So uncomfortable was it. And i didnt help that he didnt speak english, so we couldnt tell him that his actions wasnt okay. Would never recommend anyone coming here, nor support a place with an owner like this. Nothing was wrong with the rest of the staff - they were VERY nice and helpful. This seems like a place where very few women come, which could be the reason why the owner was so disgusting.
We had the most wonderful evening at Grotta dell'eremita. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff are lovely. We would recommend this restaurant and we will definitely be going back again!
Location and atmosphere great, service is a bit messy, but very soulful

It is thought to date back to the beginning of the 13th century, with smaller dimensions than the current ones. It has undergone several transformations and until the mid-1800s it consisted of a single nave, with four small side chapels (of Jesus Christ, of Charity, of Purgatory and of Saint Anthony) and several altars (of the latter, there were already 7 in 1544). The bell tower was lower, rectangular in shape. (Original) 7 Altari.

(Translated by Google) The church's construction likely dates back to the early 13th century and has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries. Until the mid-19th century, it consisted of a single nave with four small side chapels. Consolidation work began in 1853, but the 1857 earthquake damaged the building. However, work continued, and the church underwent extensive repairs and reconstruction. In 1870, the central nave was further enlarged, the sacristy was renovated, and the bell tower and two side naves were rebuilt. In the early 20th century, the church was adorned with various marble altars, thanks to contributions from Castelmezzano emigrants to the United States. The building preserves works such as the statues of "Santa Maria dell'Olmo," the "Madonna with Child," the "Madonna del Bosco-Queen Pura," and the "Madonna dell'Ascensione." Three paintings adorn the interior: the "Souls in Purgatory," the "Madonna del Carmelo," and the "Holy Family." It is located in the village's main square and is certainly worth a visit.
